Editor’s Letter Welcome to the February 22 issue of BN5. This month, we’re on a mission to inspire you! The last couple of years have been a bit unusual to say the least. At the start of the pandemic, it was actually quite nice to ‘hunker down’ and stay home; the world seemed to go a little crazy and the idea of socialising wasn’t so appealing. To be honest, we didn’t have much choice... But now it’s different and it’s wonderful to see our Henfield clubs and groups starting to emerge again back to their meetings, events, talks and social fun. One thing that’s guaranteed is that they are back with renewed energy and enthusiasm, ready to welcome you! This issue we print Part One of our Clubs and Groups guide, ‘Get Involved’. There are around 130 on our website henfieldbn5.co.uk/clubsand-groups - take a look, you can filter results by interest. We’ll publish even more over the next few months. Henfield Foodbank update
The Henfield community once again demonstrated its big heart in the run up to Christmas by donating generously to families and individuals in need via the Henfield Foodbank. In particular we would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to the following local organisations: The staff, children and parents at Oscar Bears Day Care collected all throughout December resulting in a huge tableful of useful donations; Fiona from Stokes Newsagents donated a substantial number of Christmas chocolate mini-stockings; and the members of the Henfield Trefoil Guild and Corpus Christi Catholic Parish Church donated lovely boxes of Christmas gifts for some of our Foodbank recipients. With the help of the teams at BN5 Magazine, Horsham Matters and the Henfield BP Guild as well as Foodbank volunteer Roger Bentley, all

donations have been collected and distributed, brightening up Christmas and the New Year for those who need a little extra help. We are delighted to announce that we’ve passed a milestone with the Henfield Foodbank; over 8,000 items have been donated via the two baskets located in Budgens, Henfield and St. Peter’s Church, Henfield. These are collected, sorted and transported to Horsham District Food Bank at Horsham Matters by Roger Bentley every week, thank you Roger for your hard work. Horsham Matters then provide us with boxes of store-cupboard items and toiletries, which are stored at the BN5 office, to be delivered to people in the village when they need them. For all those that continue to support the Henfield Foodbank, thank you all for your generosity - it is all very much appreciated.

Trees for St Barnabas
Henfield Weekly Market supports local charities
Local resident Henry Ray sold and delivered Christmas trees this year to support St Barnabas House Hospice, who looked after his son with care and kindness before he passed away at the beginning of December. Henry donated £5 for each tree he sold and then added a generous donation himself - what a lovely way to give back to this amazing charity. He’s pictured here presenting a cheque to Steve Parnell from Henfield Friends of St Barnabas. Henry will be raising money for St Barnabas again this year, selling Christmas trees from the end of November 2022. We’ll add details to BN5 Magazine nearer the time.
Editor A Charity Auction of Christmas hampers was held at the Weekly Market on 13 December. Barry Chaston did a great job of auctioning 30 wonderful lots and there were many happy bidders. Proceeds from the auction, together with funds raised at our recent Arts & Crafts Fair, amounted to a fantastic £1,000 which will be donated to local charities. We had already raised £1,000 from entrance fees and the sale of hot drinks at our two Christmas markets in November. This was split between four local charities and presented to their representatives by Viv Whitton on our behalf. The very happy recipients were: Sussex Wildlife Trust, Know Dementia, Warren Playgroup and the Henfield Haven. Seed Swap, Saturday 19 February
The Henfield Seed Swap will take place on Saturday 19 February 2022 at the Henfield Haven, from 10.30am to 1pm. If you have managed to save your own seeds, or you have other packets of seeds to bring then you can exchange these for the same number of other seed packets completely free! If you don’t have any seeds to bring, you can still come and buy seeds there for 50p a packet. Either way it’s a real bargain and it gives you a wonderful opportunity to try something completely different just for the fun of it. We will also be selling garden implements and pots etc, and other garden related items, so come and see what we’ve got. Are You Man Enough?
The Henfield BP Guild with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO) is offering free and confidential Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing on Saturday 2 April at Henfield Village Hall for men aged between 45 and 80. It’s a simple blood test that measures the amount of antigen entering the blood produced by the prostate. It is not a direct test for cancer; a moderately raised reading can be an indicator of a prostate problem and a high reading should trigger further tests to determine if there is a need for any treatment. The testing will be conducted by trained phlebotomists taking blood from a vein in the arm which will be analysed at a laboratory and the result either posted or emailed to you. One in every two men will have a health problem with their prostate at some stage of their lives. It could be an infection, enlargement or cancer. One in every eight men will develop prostate cancer and it is now the leading cancer found in men. Caught in the early stages, cure rates are dramatically improved with over 80% success. General symptoms of problems with the prostate are: frequent need to urinate (especially at night), bursting to urinate, slow flow, difficult/painful flow, stop/start and dribbling, or blood in the urine.

Henfield Youth Club Update
2021 was a busy year for the Henfield Youth Club and they enjoyed some lovely evenings. For 2022 the club has been fortunate to secure a grant for three new computers for the children to use. In addition, the seniors will have the opportunity to build three more computers so not only will they gain the skills to put the components together, but gain new computers and have real ownership over them – It’s a win-win all round! Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
I am so pleased that we were able to resume our normal Poppy Appeal last year after the cancellation of the 2020 event due to the pandemic – and you did us proud. The 2021 total raised in our house-to-house, street and businesses collections raised a fantastic £6,139.97 (compares with £4,779.53 in 2019). This has only been possible with your generous donations and the help and support of my fantastic Collectors. I do not normally single out individuals but this year I will particularly mention ex-Serviceman Bob Reynolds and Dave Lancaster who were outside Budgens and the bus shelter respectively and raised just over £500 each. I am also grateful to Christine Parkes who is a tremendous help in the distribution and collection of tins and boxes. However I am very conscious that I cannot carry on forever and feel that I should be looking for a successor to run the Appeal. If anyone is interested in acting as my Deputy to learn the ropes and see if they would like to take on the role and require further information then please contact me on 01273 492134

2021 tin can recycling total
During 2021 Peter Stanislas from Henfield collected a whopping 63,500 tin cans which equals 1.5 tonnes! With the proceeds from the sale of these tin cans he bought and planted 24 trees in the village – a fantastic achievement. During 2022 Peter would like to beat this total and so is encouraging more people to drop off tin cans for his collection, if you can help you can deposit the clean cans for recycling outside his home at the south end of London Road which is clearly marked with a sign.

Losing someone we love is one of the hardest things we have to face. When someone close dies, the world can seem a lonely and empty place. The Heber Opera is recruiting new voices for 2022
Heber Opera, like most singing groups, has had very limited opportunities to sing since the start of the pandemic, but we are raring to go with new plans for musical activities in 2022. Heber is hoping to inspire all you singers out there to come and enjoy an evening (or even two) of singing and finding out about what it takes to put on one of our operas. At 7.30pm on Sunday 6 and Sunday 14 March, Heber Opera will be holding two open rehearsals in Hurstpierpoint Village Centre. There will be a £5 fee for joining in each rehearsal. Henfield Bump to Baby programme update
When you read this, our first antenatal group will be part way through their course. The course provides practical information for the birth and early days of parenthood. The next course is planned for mid-March. Anyone interested can find details on Henfield Bump to Baby Facebook page. Our postnatal group is especially for new parents with young, pre crawling babies. The first meeting will be at the Henfield Haven on Tuesday 8 February. Feel free to drop in any time between 9.30 and 11.30am. The group will meet weekly and as well as time to get to know others with new babies, there will be volunteers with experience of interest to new parents on hand and an opportunity to weigh the babies. Once our antenatal and postnatal groups are running successfully, we’ll start work on setting up a group for older babies and toddlers. We’d love to hear from anyone willing to volunteer help us in setting up this group. Henfield Bump to Baby is a community initiative which totally relies on volunteers. Brain Tumour Charity donation
A huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Brain Tumour Charity via the collection boxes in King Fish and Hamfelds in the village. Donations were counted in the BN5 office from these collections, generous customers from King Fish donated £107.47 and Hamfelds collection totalled £922.30, a grand total of £1,029.77! Abi Hames from the Community Fundraising team said: This incredible amount could fund four days of pioneering research which will make a huge difference to the outcome of people diagnosed with brain tumours. All of us at the Brain Tumour Charity are grateful for the continuing support of people in Henfield.”

Henfield Youth Tournament in May Our annual youth football tournament is returning and taking place on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May 2022. The event will take place on the Kingsfield, Henfield. Participating ages groups will range from U7 to U14 boys, and U8, U10, U12 and U14 girls. Come show your support in what will be a great weekend not only for the football club but the village of Henfield as well.

Recycle your unwanted Items for local good causes
I volunteered to help Sustainable Henfield with selling items last September. I had no experience of selling on eBay or Marketplace and am not particularly technology orientated, but with Ruth’s tuition I now feel quite confident and am enjoying raising money for St Peter’s School, Henfield Haven and other local charities. If I can do it anyone can! We could though make more if we had more helpers. It is very rewarding to be part of this initiative and anyone can help. We need people to clean and mend items, others to pack to send, and others who have access to an iPad who can photograph and list items to sell. We are very happy to give training for all these roles. We have raised a staggering £14,000 for the Henfield Haven and £1,000 was raised over the four weeks in the run-up to Christmas; and other items have made £121 for the Henfield Scout building appeal; £112 for Henfield Youth Club and £157 for Sustainable Henfield. Following the announcement in the January edition of BN5, the public consultation period for the lease between Sussex Cricket and Woodmancote Parish Council which was due to commence on the 4 January 2022 has been delayed due to unforeseen circumstances. Our website will continue to be updated in relation to the dates for the consultation period, which has been moved to the 20 January 2022. However, it is likely that this date will change again as further progress has currently been delayed due to the Christmas/New Year break. We will keep residents informed via the website and BN5 and apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Introduction to Beekeeping
Have you or anyone you know ever thought of keeping bees, but needed to know more? This well-established one-day course will be held as a webinar via Zoom on Sunday 13 March will provide enough information to answer these questions… How much time do I need? What equipment do I need? How much does it cost? Is my property large enough to keep bees on? Where can I get bees and equipment? Can I look inside a beehive before I start to see whether or not beekeeping is for me? Is help available if I need it? ..and much, much more. The tutor is Roger Patterson who started beekeeping in 1963. He has been teaching, demonstrating and writing about the craft for 50 years. This is a popular annual event, now in its sixteenth year, but adapted for webinar presentation for 2022. It is organised by the Wisborough Green Beekeepers Association and makes a good grounding for the practical ‘Preliminary Sessions’ that we normally run at our teaching apiary near Wisborough Green. Sussex Writing Retreats will take place in Dial Post and bookings for the limited places are open now. Scoring smiles over the festive season
layers across Henfield Football Club’s youth teams helped score some smiles during the festive season with the hundreds of Christmas cards they made and wrote for elderly people in our local community. The children, age between five to 14, really enjoyed making and writing around 530 cards as part of the club’s ‘Score Some Smiles’ campaign, which were distributed to around 230 local people. Many players spent lots of time writing cards that were tailored to the recipient’s particular interest, including football, or drawing lovely pictures on the cards. The club’s U8s team even hosted a card making evening for players. Players’ parents also supported the club’s appeal for donations to buy small gifts for the card recipients too. The cards and gifts were delivered the week before Christmas by members of the club’s youth teams to recipients including residents at Red Oaks, Upper Mead and Terry’s Cross care homes, people living in sheltered accommodation, attendees of The Haven and clients of Henfield Home Checks. Joe Penfold, co-chair of Henfield Football Club, said: “We were thrilled by the response from our youth players to our ‘Score Some Smiles’ campaign. It was wonderful to see so many players making and writing cards to help bring some festive cheer to elderly people in our village.” He adds: “We chose to write Christmas cards because often many elderly peoples’ friends and relatives, who they used to receive cards from, have passed away and they no longer get as many. We hope the cards made lots of people smile.”

Players from the club’s U10s team also presented vaccine volunteers and staff at Henfield Medical Centre with thank you cards and Christmas gifts in recognition of all their hard work in helping people in Henfield and beyond get their Covid-19 vaccines and boosters. The players raised money for the gifts during lockdown last year by taking part in a 100 goals challenge inspired by Captain Tom Moore. Sam Witherden, HFC’s other co-chair, said: “HFC has have been part of Henfield since 1899 and scoring smiles from local people is as important to us as any match scoreline.” He adds: “The club has exciting plans for 2022, including hopefully progressing our plans for a new clubhouse at our existing site at the Kings Field, the return of our brilliant youth tournament in May and a World Cup quiz at the Henfield Hall in November.” Henfield Football Club now has around 380 registered players across its youth and senior teams. The thriving youth section ranges from U6s to U16s, including the Wildcats, for girls age 5 to 11 and a range of different age group girls teams. The club is currently seeking planning permission for a new clubhouse from Horsham District Council. HFC is always in need of volunteers to help with coaching, refereeing, clubhouse maintenance and pitch marking. Training and DBS checks will be provided. Henfield is a vibrant and active village and despite the many changes over the past two years, we still have well over 100 established clubs and groups busy welcoming new members! This year, more so than before, there’s a real sense that people are ready to get back into doing the things they love and meeting up with friends, both old and new. We’re pleased to bring you a selection of the varied clubs and groups you can enjoy in the area, all updated with their latest information. You can take up an old sport or hobby, make new friends, learn something new or just get out of the house and into some new and positive habits. Whatever the season, we all know the pleasure of time spent in the garden, whether weeding/cutting back or nurturing seedlings and planting them out. As a Henfield Garden Club member you can enjoy outings to beautiful gardens nearby or further afield in the spring, summer and autumn months, and widen your garden knowledge at the excellent speaker evenings on the first Tuesday of the winter months (from 7 – 9.30pm) in the Henfield Hall. The many social functions are fun too and an opportunity to meet fellow include the Spring and Summer Plant Sales, Garden Tea Party, Picnic enthusiasts. These Supper and a celebratory Christmas Dinner. We very much look forward to outings, social events and other activities for the Spring, Summer and Autumn months. Members will be given more detail of these activities as bookings are made. Members enjoy discounts/vouchers at Sussex Prairie Gardens, Tates Garden Centres, Stonepit Nurseries and Hamfelds. Henfield Theatre Company The Henfield Theatre Company is a vibrant amateur dramatic society based in the Henfield Village Hall. We present four or five productions each year including plays, musicals and pantos and in alternate years an open-air production, usually a Shakespeare, in one of the charming gardens in or around the village. Rehearsals are usually on Monday and Thursday evenings and typically run from 7.30-10pm. We have a membership of nearly 200 people, from Henfield and other parts of Sussex, who participate in a number of ways, and to varying extents, on and off stage. Some of us concentrate on the organisational side of productions, in activities such as set building, props, costumes and many other roles. We have regular social activities and operate a committee system to keep the theatre company running. Most of all, we ensure that having fun is at the top of the bill! Our annual membership fees are £20 (adult), £35 (couple), £5 (young person in full time education). Those interested in joining are welcome to visit, free of charge.

Tottington Woodlanders We are a group of volunteers who maintain Tottington Wood for the benefit of wildlife, preserve ancient skills and educate the general public. We work in a way that has minimum impact on the wood. Mostly we use hand tools, we limit our fire sites and burn as little as possible. Generally we are self-sufficient depending on membership and sales of woodland product to cover our costs. This way we are able to leave the grant pot for those conservation groups that are not in a position to raise income. We meet at Tottington Wood in Small Dole off the A2037 south of Woods Mill every Sunday morning (9.30am to 1pm) between the end of October and end of March. We welcome anyone who is interested and can spare just a few hours per year. Lots of small contributions make a large difference. Membership is only £3.50 per year (1st. April – 31st. March) and £2.50 for juniors (16 or under).

Henfield Joggers We are an informal running club based in Henfield, West Sussex, where we meet at Henfield Leisure Centre each Wednesday evening (7 to 8.30pm) for a friendly, chatty, club run, with a slower group alongside a faster group allowing us to cater for a wide range of paces and capabilities. We also have a training night each Thursday for those who want to improve their performance. The Club has runners of all standards, from complete beginners to experienced marathon and ultra distances, however above all else we pride ourselves on being a sociable club covering all ages and abilities, and welcome everyone, regardless of ability. Our members are involved in a range of events with a focus on trail running but also road running, triathlons and even Iron Man events. We are very active in the West Sussex Fun Run League, for which we organise our own event, the Henfield Seven Stiles, each July. Annual membership is £20 per year but you can come along to see if we’re for you for free. The Club is affiliated to England Athletics which also provides us with Insurance via UK Athletics.

Henfield Badminton Club We are a small, friendly group of very mixed abilities keen to get out of the house on Monday evenings and chase around after a shuttlecock. Our season runs between the start of September and the end of April and we meet at the Henfield Village Hall on Mondays from 7.30 to 9.30pm. We have two courts running which means that all who come along will get several games each evening. This season we have had some new members join bringing some much needed fresh blood and we are always keen to welcome newcomers. You will be very welcome to come along and try us out without any commitment and then non-members are welcome to come on a ‘pay and play’ if they do not wish to commit. Just come along one evening, no pre-booking is required. Current membership is £125 per year and each pay and play session costs £5.

Henfield Conservation Volunteers The Henfield Conservation Volunteers have been working for over 20 years maintaining and improving the wonderful natural habitats found within the Henfield Parish. The main conservation activity is on the three Commons, namely Henfield, Broadmare and Oreham, together with projects in the Tanyard and around Danny’s Pond. We maintain and improve hedgerows, many ponds and streams, coppicing in the woodlands and removing invasive and often foreign species of plants. Over the last year or so we have worked closely with the Biodiversity Action Group, part of Sustainable Henfield 2030. The joint work has included planting crocus ribbons, planting trees and adding wildflowers to appropriate corners. We normally work one Sunday each month, meeting at 10am in various locations, but often add extra work schedules as necessary. Our sessions are very rewarding, with plenty of fresh air, exercise and good company. We are always in need of more volunteers, so do contact us for further details. Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men (‘Chancs’) is an all-male Morris dancing side formed in Shoreham way back in 1953 and who dance mainly ‘Cotswold Morris’ (handkerchiefs and sticks!). Like many local clubs, ‘Chancs’ is looking for more members so potential (or existing) dancers and musicians* are invited to come and try. There’s no age limit but between 16 and 60 is ideal! Our winter practice nights are held every Wednesday at the Henfield Corpus Christi Catholic Church Hall from October to April. We dance there from 8-10pm and then have a beer or two at a pub afterwards. There is no cost involved - just the occasional annual top-up fee of £10 to cover hire costs of halls etc if needed. Beginners only need to learn one or two simple dances during the winter practices. During the summer we then dance out, mainly at pubs, on Wednesday nights, and at ‘public’ events on the occasional weekend. We also take private bookings. *CRMM is a men’s dance team but welcome both men and women musicians.

Henfield Tennis Club Henfield Tennis Club (on the Kings Field next to the Leisure Centre) has a long tradition of providing social and competitive tennis for all ages. For us, it’s not all about serious training: we love it when our teams win, but we’re just as enthusiastic about our groups that simply meet for fun. We have recently resurfaced our courts and installed modern LED floodlighting. Club sessions are held on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Youth tennis (from pre-schoolers to under 18’s) continues to flourish at the Club under the guidance of LTA qualified coaches Jörg and Keith. Children can sign up on the website for one of the regular coaching sessions which are run on Monday, Thursda y or Friday afternoons after school. We have a growing membership of around 150 and welcome new members across the age and ability spectrum. Membership is fantastic value with junior annual membership £23 and adult annual membership £131, and other options are available for families, older juniors and students. Henfield Wild Violets WI Henfield Wild Violets WI aims to give local women the opportunity to meet and make new friends, to help broaden horizons by introducing new skills and challenges through various activities and speakers. We have outings to places of interest and to the theatre. The aim is to make it fun, enjoyable and to do our best to be inclusive and give everyone a chance to contribute. We meet on the second Friday of the month from 10am-12pm in the Garden Room of the Henfield Hall. Following our monthly meetings we serve an optional light lunch to enable members to chat and socialise. As part of the Women’s Institute (WI), there are opportunities for education and contributing to campaigns on issues that matter to the local community and nationally. Recent campaigns have included Raising Awareness of Ovarian Cancer and Eradicating Modern Slavery. The WI annual subscription is £44 and is due in March and includes the monthly WI magazine (there is a proportionate discount if joining later in the year). Visitors are welcome and the WI allows two free visits before joining.

Vocal Fusion Acapella Based in Steyning, Vocal Fusion sings a four-part closeharmony acapella repertoire embracing the styles of American song, swing, jazz, modern and popular music, all arranged for men’s voice. The Chorus brings together a group of singers who not only share their musical values but most importantly want to perform and entertain their audience to the highest standard possible. Vocal Fusion now has 25 singers, drawn from all parts of Sussex, all of whom are passionate about their singing, about using their voices to make great harmony, fabulous ‘ringing’ chords, and making the music come ‘alive’. The Chorus rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7.15pm to 9.45pm throughout the year in Steyning Methodist Church (18 High Street,BN44 3GG). Whilst it’s hard work, it’s great fun too! All members get ‘Teach Tracks’ to help them learn new pieces, so the ability to sight read music is not essential. The Chorus competes at festivals, and performs at concerts and gigs across Sussex and London. See our website to learn more about us and hear us sing. Henfield Birdwatch Henfield Birdwatch was formed in 1998 by Mike Russell and other local enthusiasts to carry out a survey of birds in Henfield Parish at the turn of the Millennium, involving as many people in the community as possible, and generating interest in local birds and other wildlife. Information now goes onto a national database and can be used to inform other conservation groups e.g. Sussex Wildlife Trust and Sussex Ornithological Society, with respect to local development and conservation projects. Over 100 people joined in the first survey, contributing over 37,000 records making it the largest UK community wildlife survey. Surveys continued every fifth year, with five Reports now published, and over 150,00 records received. The 2010 Report won the British Trust for Ornithology’s “Marsh Local Ornithology Award”. The next aim is to produce a definitive volume on the birds of Henfield to mark our 25th Anniversary. Birdwatch organises surveys, birdwatching walks locally and elsewhere, holds an annual talk in November, other occasional meetings, and lunches at the Haven for socialising. Henfield Bowling Club Bowls is a sociable and enjoyable sport requiring no particular level of fitness. Want to try on one of the best greens in Sussex? Then why not come along to the Henfield Bowling Club at the Daisycroft in Henfield where one of our experienced coaches will be happy to give you an introduction with follow-up coaching. All equipment is provided, all you need is a pair of flat shoes with no tread. Members can practice any time except Tuesday morning and we have organised rollups on Monday afternoons, Wednesday mornings and Friday evenings. Friendly matches are held throughout the season, which starts at the end of April and finishes early October, and there are competitions and leagues for all levels. Henfield Bowling Club is very friendly and we also have many social events for members. Henfield Art Club We are a friendly art club with over 50 members and welcome new and experienced artists of all abilities and painting styles. We meet in Henfield Hall for monthly demonstrations on the last Tuesday of the month from 7.15-9.30pm and also invite guests to join us and attend other Club activities. We offer opportunities to get together, talk, socialise and enjoy and encourage the practice of painting or sketching, whether at our ‘Art Afternoons’ and through our programme of monthly demonstrations and workshops from professional artists. Journeys into the countryside in the summer to paint ‘en plein air’ adds to the creative adventure. Working in different media – watercolour, oils, acrylics, pencils, pastels as well as sculpture, wood-turning and fused glass – our members exhibit in local venues on a regular basis. We have a good lending library and a stock of practical DVDs which members can borrow. Whether you are just starting out or are a seasoned artist, come along as a welcomed visitor to one of our Tuesday demonstrations and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and a very inspiring evening. Henfield Netball Club Netball is a great sport, social and fun, plus a good way to improve your fitness and get some exercise, without the exercise being a chore! We play social netball on Sunday evenings at Henfield Leisure Centre from 5-6pm with occasional friendly matches and tournaments. We are a mixed group, some good at netball and some of us have not played since school. It doesn’t matter, the aim is to have fun and enjoy the sport. Our sessions are structured and fun and we have a great coach, we aim to improve our skills and our game. Are you concerned about your, or a loved one’s, later life? Do you need help understanding how care is paid for or how to protect the family’s wealth from inheritance tax or the cost of care? Most of us don’t want to think about ageing, much less talk about it. However, not telling people how we wish to be treated, or not having a plan for how we might afford our care, can leave us uncertain and worried at a time of vulnerability. I am a solicitor and Henfield resident of 17 years and, although I undertake the usual ‘private client’ work of wills and probates, my particular specialism is later life planning. My role is to help clients plan what sort of later life they aspire to and how they might afford it. I also look at the most suitable ways to limit the impact of tax and care fees. For example, often the most effective wealth protection can be as simple as having the right sort of will, rather than the incredibly expensive, usually inappropriate and often unlawful ‘property protection trusts’ that certain, unregulated, providers push. Many clients need help with the transition to supported living. I engage with care professionals and advise on the next steps. I can even assist in finding suitable placements in residential accommodation or arrange care at home. And, for those arranging their own care or already in a care environment, I can advise on the care provider’s contract to give you peace of mind that you or your loved one is receiving the right standard of care and value for money. However, a large part of my work is planning for and dealing with the loss of mental capacity, whether via the Court of Protection or by use of powers of attorney. What concerns me is the significant proportion of people who agree to be an attorney without any idea of what a complex job it is, or the standards to which they are held in law. Unprepared attorneys can lead to family tensions, guilt and, sometimes, the risk of financial abuse. To help combat this I give advice and training to attorneys. I also have great success in managing families at crisis point so that together we can find a path back to best supporting the person in need. Inheritance Tax Matters Paul Samrah, Henfield resident and partner at Chartered Accountants Moore Kingston Smith LLP, provides some valuable Inheritance Tax advice… Planning ahead allows you to set out clearly who should get what from your Estate on your death. It also means you can maximise Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs and exemptions should your Estate be worth more than the IHT threshold or ‘nil-rate band’ when you die (currently £325,000). A growing number of people are becoming liable to IHT because of an increase in property values from the early 1980s to date. IHT applies to your entire worldwide Estate (including property, savings, investments and chattels) and is charged at 40%. There are various exemptions which enable you to reduce your potential IHT bill, but these should be used with care. Your starting point should be to write a will and review it every few years to check that it still reflects your wishes and dovetails with prevailing tax legislation. Making a will and ensuring people know where to find it, is the first step to ensuring that your Estate is shared out in line with your wishes when you die. Attaching a Letter of Wishes can assist in directing certain aspects of your Estate, also it is invaluable to note your passwords etc to enable your executors to speedily access your on-line/paperless financial affairs. If you don’t leave a will, your Estate will be shared among your next of kin based on a strict order of priority in accordance with the rules of intestacy. This means that people who you want to benefit from your Estate may well receive nothing. If you are unmarried/not in a civil partnership and living together then you definitely need a will, otherwise your loved one will receive absolutely nothing from your Estate upon your death. The deceased’s parents, siblings and even ex-partner can be potential beneficiaries, rather than the surviving partner. This can cause untold misery, particularly where the home was owned solely by the partner who died. I recently dealt with a case where the deceased 60 | BN5 Magazine
was in a four year relationship and had asked his girlfriend to marry him – but he died intestate. His closest family were distant cousins who broadly took the lot – some £1.5m after tax. Furthermore his Life Policy was not written into trust and fell into his Estate to be taxed at 40%. Divorce, or dissolution of a civil partnership, could cause parts of your will to be nullified and marriage or remarriage may completely invalidate a current will. If you change an existing will, it is generally a good idea to start the new one with a clause stating that it ‘revokes all previous wills’. Lifetime gifts are treated in a number of ways for IHT purposes. However, from an IHT point of view, you only need worry about making gifts if you think your Estate – including the value of any gifts you make – might exceed the IHT threshold when you die. If your Estate exceeds the threshold, any gifts made more than seven years before you die may be exempt from IHT. In respect of the seven year rule above, you must survive for seven years from the date of making the gift for it to be free of IHT. If you die within the seven years, the IHT payable is calculated on a sliding scale, ranging from 40% (no relief) in the first three years to 8% in the seventh year on any excess over the nil rate band. Decreasing term assurance can be arranged to cover the potential IHT liability during the seven year period following the gift of a potentially exempt transfer. Other exempt transfers include gifts out of surplus income. These should be treated with particular care and recorded – they must be regular payments from your income and not have any detrimental effect on your normal standard of living. Transfers between UK-domiciled spouses/ civil partners, gifts to UK established charities and political parties, national institutions (National Trust, British Museum etc) are all exempt from IHT. Small gifts of up to £250 per annum to any number of individuals are treated as exempt – these gifts are meant to cover things such as birthday and Christmas presents. exempt are gifts totalling no more than £3,000 in total to any individuals in any one year (i.e. £1,000 to each of three children or £3,000 to one child). This exemption can be rolled over for one Tax Year, but cannot be combined with small gifts to the same person(s). Also exempt are gifts to people getting married – up to £5,000 from each parent of the couple, £2,500 from each grandparent or more remote relative and £1,000 from anyone else. Assets that qualify for Business Property Relief, such as shares in AIM-listed and unquoted trading companies can attract 100% relief from IHT provided that the investment has been held for at least two years. You can vary both a will or an intestacy, as long as all the beneficiaries affected by the variation agree – this must be done within two years of the death.
