Editor’s Letter
It was really exciting to see the first Henfield residents receiving their Covid-19 vaccination during January, it feels like a real light at the end of the tunnel. Just before we went to print, we heard that Henfield Medical Centre professionals had spent the weekend vaccinating the residents and staff of two of our local care homes. It was emotional to see the photos. So many people have been unable to visit their parents and grandparents in care homes, the Covid pandemic and restrictions have caused enormous misery. It does feel as if this latest lockdown is much tougher than the first. The dark evenings, cold weather, challenges of home schooling and sadness of not seeing our friends and family. Many families are facing financial uncertainty with jobs lost or teetering in the balance. Henfield is a very caring village, so please ask for help if you need it. The Henfield Helpline is up and running (page 37), the Henfield Food Bank (page 26) can help too. Local pubs and cafes and the Haven (page 27) are offering takeaways and deliveries and there is the promise of warmer weather, longer days and brighter times ahead. Please share your worries, there is always someone who will lend a listening ear.

Vaccine Frenzy!
Tensions are running high everywhere. Frustrations expressed on social media, desperation for the vaccine to get us out of this seemingly never-ending situation of social distancing and lockdown. But the logistics required to make this happen on a national scale have been enormous. Behind the scenes in the GP surgeries we have had to learn how to handle the three new vaccines, make a plan that hopefully dovetails in with the supply of the vaccine that the government can arrange, not to mention carrying on with our usual work at a busy time of year. There have been an unbelievable amount of complex Standard Operating Procedures to read and inwardly digest just for it to be updated a couple of days later. GPs know how to run vaccination campaigns, having run the flu jab clinics for years, but these new vaccines have to be handled with such care and the Pfizer vaccine cannot be transported again once delivered to its destination. The logistics of transportation and managing supply of the vaccine meant that the Government asked us to choose one site in our Primary Care Network (Henfield, Billingshurst, Steyning and Storrington) as our primary vaccination site. The brand new surgery in Storrington was chosen as it was the most central and most suited to a large vaccination effort.
Dr Karen Crawford Clarke administering vaccines at Red Oaks
Each different type of vaccine needs to be treated differently. How to store them, draw them up, how quickly we have to use them, how to transport them to Nursing Homes, whether patients have to wait 15 mins afterward, who we can and can’t vaccinate, in which order. Not to mention how to run a clinic and maintain social isolation and Covid safety, and for the Pfizer vaccine, how to do 975 vaccines within 3 days of it arriving at Storrington, with unpredictable delivery dates and often no notice. In our rural community, we have always been brilliant at working together. Our volunteers have

FEBRUARY 2021 | News been helping with crowd control at Storrington, and the Henfield Link drivers have been driving people over there. We should have vaccinated all our patients who are over 80 by the end of January (vaccine supply allowing). Then we will start on the next group. As more of the AstraZeneca (Oxford) vaccine is produced and delivered, we are very much hoping that we will be able to ramp up the vaccination programme by vaccinating from all four surgeries in the PCN. We are making plans in readiness for this at Henfield. The rate-limiting factor at the moment is the supply of the vaccine. It was a wonderful feeling getting all the residents and staff of Red Oaks nursing home vaccinated yesterday (Saturday 9 Jan). I was in full PPE, but sticking out of the bottom of my gown were my leopard print trousers, and one elderly resident gave me a big grin as I jabbed him, pointed to my trousers and said “Cheetah!”. There are no words! We want to reassure you all that finally the vaccine is coming. We are rolling it out in strict order and we know who you all are (!), so no need to call us, we will contact you. As you know, the numbers of Covid-19 patients in Henfield have been increasing at an alarming rate. The hospitals are currently over-whelmed. We have been asked to monitor patients at home rather than send them into hospital, and also to enable earlier than usual discharge from hospital. We are ready for this with special finger oxygen monitors (pulse oximeters) that we can lend to patients (you can buy them on the internet too). We will only need to do this if you have breathing problems with Covid-19 and are high risk. We have two brilliant new doctors joining us at Henfield medical practice to help us with all this work! Dr Will Shepherd and Dr Jay Driscoll. Dr Reade has sadly retired, although he is still helping us out with some clinics. Finally, stay at home, even once vaccinated, until the numbers start to go down.
Poppy Appeal 2020
The Poppy Appeal in 2020 was badly affected by Covid 19 but nevertheless Henfield rose to the occasion. Despite being unable to carry out house-to-house or street collections, our business premises did us proud and we were able to raise £1,196.05 in the reduced period the poppies were available. A big thank you to all who contributed and to BN5 for all their excellent publicity for Remembrance and the Poppy Appeal. The total raised in the District for the Poppy Appeal for the year ending 30th September 2020 totalled £6,438.54.

Henfield Helpline
The Helpline is still up and running and has been since March last year and we would like to say a huge thank you to all those volunteers who have given up and continue to give up their time so willingly during this pandemic to help those who have been unable to leave their homes. If you need help please try asking relatives, friends, or neighbours first and if you still require help please give the helpline a call or an email; mornings are normally the best time of day but if you do not get an answer please leave a message and we will get back to you, we will endeavour to help that day or as soon as possible afterwards. Our priority is for the most vulnerable in the community and therefore if you are able to ask family members for help that would release others to help those with no family nearby. The Helpline can be contacted on 01273 494420 and helpline@henfieldhub.com. The NHS Volunteer service for prescriptions is on 0808 196 33 82. (although the Helpline can also assist with prescriptions if necessary)

BN5 Birds
It is the period between Christmas and New Year and the weather is bitter. Our neighbours have announced they have 10 Blackbirds lined up outside their house every morning waiting for food to be put out for them. Some of you may have noticed the increase in Blackbirds in your gardens over the winter. It is probable that most of these birds have migrated from Scandinavia and Northern Europe to enjoy the normally warmer temperatures and easier feeding in Britain. At the beginning of March they will make the journey back up north and we will be left with our resident Blackbirds. We have noticed a higher number of Starlings in our garden this year. Although they look like Blackbirds, both species being black with a yellow beak, the Starling’s black plumage has a metallic green and purple sheen. Starlings are communal birds with groups of them feeding in gardens chattering and squeaking and dashing around trying to get the best titbits whereas Blackbirds tend to feed singly and will chase other birds off. Male and female Starlings look the same from a distance, however, if you look more closely you will notice that some of them have a pale blue base to the beak, these are the males – blue for a boy! Starling numbers have fallen by 66% in Britain since the mid 1970’s so it has been good to see higher numbers in our garden – could it be the start of a revival? They are called ‘cavity nesters’ and have taken advantage of some of the Swift nest boxes that Henfield Birdwatch has put up around the village and I wonder if that is why there are more of them around. Henfield Birdwatch has a website www. henfieldbirdwatch.co.uk and is also on Facebook.

Covid-19 vaccination scam alert
We are aware that some patients are receiving fraudulent calls and text messages offering the COVID-19 vaccination. In some cases, people are asked to press a number on their keypad or to send a text message to confirm they wish to receive the vaccine. Doing so is likely to result in a charge being applied to their phone bill. In other cases, callers are offering the vaccine for a fee or asking for bank details. The advice is that vaccine is only available from the NHS and the NHS will contact you when it is your turn. If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up. If you believe you have been the victim of fraud or identity theft you should report this directly to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Where the victim is vulnerable, report it to Sussex Police online or by calling 101.

Haven Christmas Quiz winner
The 23rd December was the final date for the Henfield Haven Christmas Quiz 2020 participants to submit their completed questionnaires. We had a really good number to mark this year and it was a tight finish, but up there ahead of all the rest was Nick Cryer with a winning 74 points out of a possible 77. Our heartiest congratulations go to Nick. His prize was a super hamper full of seasonal goodies which we hope he and his family enjoyed. Our thanks go to our question setters Phyl Eager, John Coit and Tony Baker as well as to Nigel Parsons for his sponsorship and of course to you the folk of Henfield who have supported our endeavours by purchasing the quiz sheets. All the funds raised go to the Henfield Haven. We look forward to your support towards the end of the year when we will be challenging you all again.

Henfield tea towel update
The all-new Henfield Tea Towels hit the streets in December and literally flew out of the door with the whole first batch selling out, including the limited edition ‘peacock’ versions. Huge thanks are due to Oliver at Post House Café, Nina at Gallery BN5 and of course Digby and the team

at the Henfield Haven who all promoted and sold this popular product at zero commission. What this has meant is that we have been able to cover all costs, completely fund a follow-on batch of the Henfield version and hand the Henfield Haven over £1,100 so far. For the future that means that every penny from every sale now goes to The Haven, so that total will only increase. Thank you to everyone who bought them, we know they also went to friends and family far and wide putting Henfield on display in many people’s homes. If you missed out before Christmas, don’t worry, new stock has arrived and is now on sale either at the Henfield Haven when you collect your lockdown takeaway, or online 24/7 at: alisoncrowejewellery.co.uk/henfield-charitytea-towels/ . Will we reprint the peacock version? We’ll have to wait and see – watch this space!

Superhero Fundraising For The Royal British Legion
Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman (father, son and daughter) ran 38 miles along the South Downs Way on Christmas Eve as a fundraising event in support of The Royal British Legion (RBL). James ‘Batman’ Hayward (army veteran) said: “We realised that the Poppy Appeal took a big dip this year due to the Covid-19 measures that are in place across the country. We wanted to do something to help The Royal British Legion. My daughter Kate ‘Wonder Woman’ Hayward (MA student and Bournemouth University Woman’s Rowing Captain), and my son, Sean ‘Robin’ Hayward (serving British Army), thought that a charity run as a family bubble would be the best option. That was back in early October. “We started fundraising via a Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/james-batmanhayward and kept our fingers crossed that everything would work out. It was touch and go with the appalling weather and increasing Tier states but Level 2 remained in place for us and the rain stayed away. “We started at sunrise and were relieved to see clear skies, light winds and a bright sun. Large swathes of the route were still suffering the effects of the recent heavy rainfall. Our movement over the terrain was a lot harder going and, unfortunately, slower than we had hoped. Our spare clothing, emergency kit, rations and water weighed in at just under 10 kilos per rucksack. Pockets of the route were busy particularly around the isolated car parks and areas of habitation. Generally though, it was a quiet day and we enjoyed the natural beauty that the South Downs still offers in abundance. The day went well, we’ve raised around £950 so far for the RBL if you include both the donations and gift aid totals. “Wonder Woman and Robin were completely awesome throughout the entire day, they finished fresh. 38 miles felt like a long way and Batman was relying on natural superhero ability and

We will give you something to smile about... We would like to introduce Bioclear Matrix System. A simple way to get rid of black triangles, diastema and uneven teeth. This advanced tooth bonding technique is a minimally invasive and cost effective dental treatment that uses clear forms that are then filled with heated composite material matched to the shade of your teeth. Using this technique your qualified dentist is able to fill black triangles, close gaps and build up uneven teeth. The light contacts achieved with this system mean that the papilla (the gum between the teeth) is hugged back into place, revealing a healthy and youthful smile with a natural finish. The process is minimally invasive to the teeth and can be placed in one appointment, affordable and highly aesthetic. Can you help our Conservation Volunteers? We live in a beautiful village surrounded by stunning countryside. During the pandemic, walking local footpaths and visiting the many local beauty spots we’re so lucky to have has become a lifeline for many of us. We tend to assume that our three commons, footpaths, ponds and twittens are naturally this way, which is partly true, but not the entire picture. There’s a huge amount of work that goes into looking this stunning! Without the dedication of the Henfield Conservation Volunteers and Henfield Parish Council (who often collaborate) then our footpaths would be overgrown, our common would be blighted by invasive species. Henfield Conservation Volunteers has recently formed a collaboration with SH2030 (Sustainable Henfield 2030), their aims are closely aligned so the partnership is a logical one. More volunteers, more enthusiasm and more will to protect and 18 | BN5 Magazine
encourage threatened species by improving biodiversity in Henfield; both groups believe that when tackling climate change, the best place to start is on your own doorstep! Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions have somewhat scuppered HCV’s ability to be as productive they’d like. Although small work parties (just groups of two right now) can perform minor work, the bulk of autumn and winter activity has been stymied. So, very soon it’ll be ‘all hands on deck’ to get the projects underway before mother nature wakes up and spring brings a new flourish of growth! This is where you can help. There are lots of projects on the horizon which may interest you, where you can get involved and get your hands dirty to help improve the village and our environment. For example, there’s the sowing of wildflower seeds and planting projects to create bee www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

corridors in the swales along the access roads to Henfield Leisure Centre. Tree planting of native trees near Henfield Medical Centre, these will all need watering if we end up with another dry summer. Plans are afoot to plant a mini forest / copse (for future local children to play in) and to create a fruit tree trail, planting some heritage and unusual English fruit trees to help preserve and diversify species. Aside from these lovely planting and improvement projects, there’s always lots of very satisfying clearance work needed on the commons, Tanyard pond and along footpaths. Clearance is one of the Conservation Volunteers favourite tasks, with immediate and gratifying effects! In the past, the group have achieved some wonderful results. They’ve cleared non-native invasive species such as cherry laurel (with the great help of the B-P Guild) and Wilson’s honeysuckle on Henfield Common, which opened

a beautiful gladed area through the woods where wild flowers are now growing. They’ve cleared saplings to allow the ancient oaks to flourish on the common and removed willow scrub and bramble from the ancient reed-bed. They’ve planted wild flowers and fruit trees on Borrer’s Bank, and new hedging on the northern side of the Rothery Field. On Broadmere Common the very rare Black Poplar trees, planted over 10 years ago, are now well established and looking beautiful. The list goes on! When you’re out on your walks you’ll see plenty of evidence of the work the Conservation Volunteers, not just the examples above. John Willis explained why joining in, even if just for an hour or two, is a rewarding thing to do. “As we have been unable to meet and work for several months in 2020, as soon as the pandemic dies down, there is a huge backlog of work to BN5 Magazine | 19

If this year has shown us anything, it is that for improved physical and mental health, we need to get outside more and connect with the natural environment.... the ‘Wellbeing’ factor. Whatever your ability, there is satisfaction and enjoyment in what we achieve.” Here’s a few useful FAQs, to help you decide if the Henfield Conservation Volunteers is for you. How often do you meet? We meet about once a month on a Sunday morning and work for 2-3 hours. Occasionally we also meet on a Saturday. Do you provide tools? The Conservation volunteers has most of the tools required. Occasionally we are joined by Parish Council employees who are licenced to use specialist tools. Sometimes it helps if some volunteers bring along their own tools. What clothing do you suggest? We suggest old 20 | BN5 Magazine
clothes. Strong gardening gloves are a good idea, also boots or wellies. We do have some waders for when we work on ponds. Who can join? Any adult from 18 to over 80 whatever your ability, can help. Younger people, accompanied by a supervising adult, are most welcome and encouraged to come along. If you are interested in helping, please call John Willis on 01273 494822, private message Henfield Conservation Volunteers Facebook page, or email SH2030 on sh2030@mail.com. They’d also be interested in hearing from you if you have any ideas on protecting our natural environment. Henfield resident Richard Bates, consultant solicitor at Cognitive Law in Brighton, comments on how to help your loved ones avoid being caught out by scams. In the last three weeks, I have had six clients who have been targeted by scammers. Financial security is increasingly important as scams become more widespread. Presently, Covid vaccine and HMRC tax rebate scams are prevalent, but one should watch out for: Fake social media ads – ‘too good to be true’ offers with links leading you to buy nonexistent goods or part with personal information. ‘Phishing’ – correspondence looking like it’s from a genuine sender, such as HMRC, but is, in fact, fake. Again, you may be asked to part with money or click a link to software which steals your personal information. ‘Impersonator’, ‘vishing’ or ‘courier’ scams - a phone call ‘out of the blue’ from someone impersonating your bank, the police, or service provider. They trick you into giving personal information which is used to gain access to your bank account. ‘Smishing’ (SMS phishing) - a text message, seemingly from your bank, a company or local authority warning of fraud and asking you to take urgent action. Again, once you engage, they trick you into giving personal information. What can you do? Always be sceptical of overly attractive offers. Never follow a link you don’t completely trust. Remember, you can always speak to your bank, although do separately research the phone number. Banks and the police will never tell you to transfer money. HMRC will never contact you, except by post. There is unlikely to be any bill that’s so urgent it cannot wait. Don’t give away PINs or memorable information and hang up on suspicious calls, being careful to leave it a few minutes before using the phone again. A genuine caller won’t be offended. Support at-risk friends and family by talking about the risks of scams and consider powers of attorney to provide a ‘gatekeeper’ or have that person take quick action if a scam is successful. To discuss any of these issues further, please get in touch on 07866 547366 or richard.bates@cognitivelaw.co.uk. You can also find out more at www.cognitivelaw.co.uk. adgers have spent the last couple of months mostly underground. They don’t hibernate but do spend a lot of time asleep in their setts, emerging occasionally to forage but otherwise surviving on fat reserves laid down last autumn. Now that their long winter snooze is over, badgers are busy spring cleaning: digging out old soil and replacing dirty bedding with fresh grass, leaves and moss. Sett maintenance is a constant chore but badgers pay particular attention to hygiene at this time of year as they prepare for new arrivals. Females deliberately give birth in winter so that their cubs will emerge from the sett when the weather is mild and invertebrate food is plentiful. This maximises the time they can spend eating, growing and putting on fat to survive the following winter. Badgers can mate at any time of the year and pregnancy lasts around seven weeks – so how do they time their litters so accurately? Females employ a reproductive strategy known as delayed implantation. After mating, fertilised eggs remain dormant within the womb and don’t start to develop until triggered by a surge of
01273 494002
reproductive hormones in early winter. For most badger mums, this results in a February due-date. Expectant mothers prepare a special nursery chamber with a deep layer of soft bedding. Between one and five cubs are born, around 12 cm long and with thin coats of silver hair and faint black facial stripes. They open their eyes at five weeks but remain underground for the first two months of their lives, fully dependent on their mother for milk, warmth and protection. During this time, they’ll start exploring the sett’s tunnels and chambers, gradually venturing towards the entrance and eventually emerging above ground for the first time in late April or early May. Their first steps are tentative and they stay close to the familiar comforts of home, under the careful supervision of their mother. But as their confidence grows they will start emerging earlier, staying out longer and venturing further into their new surroundings, learning how to forage in between the important business of playing chase and wrestling with their siblings.

Recycling results!
Wow, what a fantastic start to our push on recycling in Henfield! Despite the ongoing difficulties of Covid, people donated a huge range of unwanted items to be reused or recycled last year, raising a lot of money for good causes. SH2030 would like to thank all shops hosting collection bins and local residents who have been filling them. Here are some of the results of the recycling so far- you’ve been doing a fantastic job! Also, the following shops are still collecting – Post Office Cafe are collecting Pringles tubes plus biscuit and confectionery packaging in the wheelie bin their back garden; Henfield Eye Care have collected lots of pairs of old glasses which will be sent abroad by the Henfield Lions to be reused, keep them coming; Hamfelds are collecting trigger sprays, soap pumps and packaging for wipes and cleaning products all of which will be recycled by Terracycle raising money to the Henfield Haven; Cornerweighs are collecting plastic milk bottle lids to raise money for the Horsham charity Springboard and; Henfield Tea Gardens are collecting small plastic lids which will be recycled by Protomax into furniture. Since January 5th, we have had to curtail some of our local collections temporarily, due to the lockdown. We hope all our supporters will continue to collect up items at home, ready for when we can open up the full scheme again in future. Most businesses which can remain open will continue. Alas, poor Pet Passport! I am writing this article on the 2nd January as Annelise “De-Christmases” the house. When I was younger this was the time of the “thank-you” letter – I used to fill up my parker vector with a new royal blue ink cartridge and set to work. It was certainly tedious but a good way of making me consider all the presents that I had received. Even in the age of the email, it would be wrong not to enforce the same regime on our two children – mainly because if we had to do it, so should they! Watching them complete the thank-you letter task reminds me of how bad my handwriting has become. Granted, it was never a perfect copperplate, but now nearly everything is written on a keyboard, there has certainly been some significant deterioration. I’m not sure you could tell the difference between my handwriting and my 6 year old, Owen’s – except he can’t neccessarily necesarily necessarily spell as well… This brings me on to “form filling”. In particular the debacle that we are now faced with in terms of the paperwork required for pet travel into the EU post Brexit. You can imagine the joy in my heart when I (and the rest of the veterinary profession) discovered at very short notice that the pet passport was to be replaced with a 10 page “Animal Health Certificate” (AHC) as of the 1st January 2021. I had a particularly warm feeling inside on learning that this was one of those forms where use of the wrong colour, an inadvertent lower case letter where a capital should be, or a tick in the wrong box could result in having to start the whole thing again! Furthermore, each certificate is unique to the country to which the pet is entering from the UK, has to be certified, stamped and printed copies taken of the certificate and all supporting documentation.
with the pet’s identification in it, where you could record information such as rabies vaccination status and health checks. You could then use this document every time the pet travels without the need to fill out a new one for each journey. Maybe you could make the document blue and like a little booklet and give it a name. Perhaps “Pet Passport”, or similar?!? Apologies for the sarcastic rant! Below is some constructive advice with regards the changes to pet travel. From 1st January 2021, GB pet passports will no longer be valid for travel to the EU. Instead you will need an AHC. You will need to bring your pet for an appointment with an Official Veterinary Surgeon (OV) within 10 days of your date of travel. You will need to bring evidence of date of microchipping and rabies vaccination with you. The AHC is valid for 4 months and will allow you to return to the UK within that time frame. There are obviously many other possible scenarios, such as where you are travelling, travel through other countries and how long you are travelling for. It is beyond the scope of this article to go into all these details, but I have written a comprehensive guide on our website – just visit the “news” section to view it. We have four OV’s at Hawthorn vets, so while it may not be our favourite thing to do, we are well set up to complete AHCs and support you and your pet on their journey – whenever that is allowed! Please feel free to contact us if you have any queries about pet travel or anything veterinary. Jonathan Underwood
And the best bit of all? This has to be repeated every time a pet travels to the EU. Now, I am no bureaucrat, but it would seem to me that a far simpler system would be to have a single document

South Downs H
ockey is a hugely popular sport played both around the world as well as here in our corner of Sussex. And whilst the pandemic is currently preventing any hockey from happening, the South Downs Hockey Club is very much looking forward to the day when training and matches can take place again. The South Downs Hockey Club was formed back in 2010 by a group of 11 women who wanted to move away from highly competitive hockey to a more family-friendly approach where both they and eventually their children could play together. The club, which is already 10 years old, shares its Astroturf pitch with the Steyning Grammar School and its club house with Steyning Cricket Club on Charlton Street in Steyning. The club started initially with one team in the Sussex Ladies League, training once a week and playing matches on Saturdays, although finding enough players to play each week was often a challenge in the early days! The children’s hockey element of the club really took off after the South Down Hockey Coach offered to run the Steyning Grammar School after-school hockey club in 2012. This club proved massively popular with up to 60 boys and girls of all ages attending some weeks and it continued through until early 2020 (when the Covid pandemic struck) with older, more
2 | BN5 Magazine
experienced pupils providing coaching support alongside the coach. The success of this afterschool club led to the decision to start a regular junior South Downs Hockey Club on Sunday mornings for those under 16 of any standard. In in 2017 it was decided that they had enough junior girls attending hockey club to launch an under-16 girls team – the Skylarks! This is the fourth season that the Skylarks have fielded a team in the Sussex Girls Development League and they have been going from strength to strength. They were joined at the beginning of the 2020/2021 season with the launch of an under 16’s boys team – the Scorpions who have also been making an impact in their short time playing in the Sussex Boys Development League! With some of the older girls moving into adult hockey, there was not enough league hockey for the increasing numbers of female players and so at the end of the 2018/2019 season it was decided to create a second ladies team to play in the Sussex Ladies League. This second team, true to the aims of the original club, has several mothers who currently play alongside their daughters! During normal times, the club now runs two successful training sessions a week: one on a Wednesday evening for women of all levels, and one on a Sunday morning for all juniors www.henfieldbn5.co.uk

Hockey Club including the Skylarks and Scorpions teams and an increasing number of younger members under the age of 10! The South Downs Hockey Club is incredibly friendly as well as community minded, organising socials for players of all ages and fundraisers for local charities. During the past six months there have been two fundraising events including a sponsored sunrise walk for St Barnabas House Hospice and a fun festive hockey match for Beat Eating Disorder. In 2010 the South Downs Hockey club started with just 11 members and today, despite the hiatus caused by the Covid pandemic it has over 100 members, with most of them being

junior hockey players! In line with England Hockey regulations, South Downs Hockey has its own Covid Officer and the Club was training and playing Covid-secure matches across four divisions until just before Christmas when all of Sussex was put into Tier 4. Whilst no one can predict how the rest of this hockey season will pan out, the club is optimistic that they will be able to revert to both Covid-secure training and league matches before too long. To find out more about South Downs Hockey Club see southdownshc.co.uk or follow their Face Book page.

HENFIELD COMMON
MANAGEMENT PLAN UPDATE
I
n 2018 Kate Ryland of Dolphin Ecological drew up a management plan for Henfield Common. This was adopted by the Henfield Commons’ Joint Committee and it was agreed that Kate would review progress under the plan annually. She carried out the 2019 review but Covid stopped the 2020 review, as well as a lot of the work that would have been carried out on the Common. The main recommendation of the report was to introduce cattle in limited numbers and for limited time on to the Common, but this has not been done. Cattle grazing is the gold standard of conserving grasslands and great strides are being made in controlling the cattle without any infrastructure on the ground. However even under the latest systems, the cows have to learn what is required – where to go and not to go. This takes time and Henfield Common does not have the time, space and freedom from danger (dogs and traffic) to enable this to happen. The other main recommendation was to create multiple different environments, not targeted at particular wildlife but to allow whatever likes that environment to thrive. This has been partially achieved by creating glades in the woods bringing light to the edges and by putting scrapes of different depths in the reed bed, but complicated mowing patterns have not yet been introduced into the grass areas. Timing the
01273 494002
mowing is a difficult compromise between letting seeds set (a later cut) and being able to cut and clear the cuttings (taking advantage of dry spells in the weather). Clearing the hay is important to reduce soil fertility. Hopefully we will be able to start more complicated mowing regimes next year. One thing we will be trying is to leave uncut strips round the edge of the various fields and cut parts of these strips on a three or four year cycle. The edges will end up looking very untidy, but will offer a habitat for a number of insects. The major improvement of 2020 was re-instating a horse trail through the woods. This will enable riders to enjoy the woods without damaging the footpath to Swains. Hopefully by putting wood chips down along the trail it will remain passable in winter. This is still a work in progress. We have also put effort in wondering how best to support the ‘park oak’ just in the south wood from the car park. Two lateral branches extending horizontally from the trunk broke and had to be cut down. Experts considered the tree and it was decided to do nothing but find suitable ‘Y’ trees to be put in place as crutches to support the remaining lateral branches. However a professional will conduct an aerial survey to see if there are any problems up in the tree not visible from the ground. The tree is conservatively estimated at 350 years old.

Post-Brexit opportunities for UK businesses Over the past four years, much has been written about the negative impact that Brexit will have on UK businesses. However, at least now there is certainty and perhaps it is time to consider the opportunities that may emerge with the Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TCA) now signed by the UK & the EU27. 1. Overseas markets
The opportunity for UK businesses to trade globally is seen as one of the main advantages of leaving the EU. Certainly a weaker pound helps UK companies that export goods overseas, as it makes their products cheaper. But alongside the exchange rate, it is important to recognise that UK trade with the rest of the world is no longer tied to EU rules, as was the case pre-Brexit. The UK has negotiated and agreed over 40 trade deals, covering more than 70 nonEU countries. The government is in advanced discussions with Australia, New Zealand and the US. As a result in certain markets, exports may be subject to fewer tariffs and regulations than might previously have been the case. 2. Supply chain
months and will involve an HMRC inspection before AEO status is conferred. 4. Home markets
As a result of the weakened pound since the 2016 Brexit vote, imports have become more expensive for UK businesses and consumers. The increased cost of doing business with the EU offers the opportunity to focus on bringing the supply line back to the UK and to maximise the UK customer market. It may be that a competitor pulls out of the UK, thereby presenting the opportunity for your business to increase its market share. Brexit provides an opportunity for the UK to become more self-sufficient – to leverage home-grown products and services, thereby strengthening green credentials and creating a feeling of ‘local’ rather than ‘global’ connections. 5. Digitalisation
Thanks largely to significant leaps in technology, robotics and artificial intelligence, digitalisation is on the increase. Brexit presents an opportunity, given the restricted EU labour rules now in play, to consider automation and streamlining of certain critical business functions – including HR, sales, marketing and finance.
The introduction of Rules of Origin on goods has brought with it the prospect of tariffs, leading to higher costs. UK businesses should now review 6.
