Many of the articles in this issue of BN5 are updates this month, our first is rather colourful and lovely - the Care for Carers project. Please take a look at page 20 for photographs of the gift deliveries and the wonderfully decorated pots and donations we received. It was a really fun project and we hope it lifted the spirits of our care home staff and residents, thank you all for your participation. You’ll recall our article in the July issue of BN5 about the future of the Henfield Haven. Although there is a long battle ahead, things are looking much more positive, the village have rallied behind the Haven CIO, volunteers and customers to make sure this essential and hard-won resource is here to stay. You’ll read on page 22 about the extraordinary efforts of our local business community to get behind the Haven, their support is incredibly valuable and much appreciated. With everyone’s help, the future of the Haven will be bright. Finally, as the high street reopens please continue to shop locally to help them through these difficult times. On page 41 you’ll find a useful list from SH2030 of all the Henfield shops who are also accepting unusual items for recycling.

News | AUGUST 2020 seriously affected by the Covid-19 crisis, and yet children continue to fall ill, babies continue to be born prematurely and little bones continue to be broken. So in order to help boost their fundraising over the upcoming summer months, the charity has developed a new challenge which is encouraging people to get sponsored to run, ride or ramble to accumulate enough kilometres between them to go round the world (that’s a total of 40,075km if you were wondering). Anyone can get involved in any way they want; just pick a distance, break it down and record your distance on a tracking app. Whether it’s running a mile a day for a month, completing a big 20mile hike walk in one day or ‘virtually’ cycling from Edinburgh to Brighton (749 kilometres), every kilometre counts. Every kilometre covered will be recorded on the special Strava site set up by the charity. If you haven’t heard of Strava, it’s an app that tracks your fitness activity, recording your run, walk or cycle route along with distance and time. To get involved all Rockinghorse is asking for is a Run, ride, or ramble for £50 minimum sponsorship or donation to get Rockinghorse involved. Help for Horton Golf Club
We are so fortunate that Henfield has a strong community spirit and that we help and support each other when we can. A fantastic example of this is when Acacia Groundcare Equipment Rental found out about the burglary at Horton Golf Club earlier this year, when several important maintenance machinery items were stolen. Dale Hudson, one of the Acacia Directors, said: “When we saw the BN5 Facebook post about yet another break-in at Horton Golf Club we felt angry and disappointed for them. They are customers of ours and having known them many years we were only too pleased to get in touch to offer to loan them some equipment. The theft happened just as the grass growing season was starting and we were able to help out by letting them borrow a versatile Hayter 56 Roller Pro mower which can handle both a formal finish and rough areas.” David Bateson, secretary of Horton Golf Club said: “Sadly, during the lock-down, Horton Golf Club suffered a major theft of essential machinery. The break-in also caused a lot of damage to buildings. This was a major blow to morale and meant we were really struggling to maintain the course. However, the club has received wonderful support from Acacia. Without hesitation Dale offered us the loan of a hand mower until we could get back on our feet. He also refused any charge for the loan, for which we are eternally grateful. It

In my last report to you I informed you that an independent examiner had been appointed to carry out the examination of the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan (HNP). The role of the examiner is clearly defined in legislation. It is to examine whether the Submission HNP meets the Basic Conditions, Convention Rights and other Statutory Requirements. The examiner cannot propose an alternative plan but the report assesses whether the plan is legally compliant and where necessary recommends modifications to the plan policies and supporting text. As part of the examination process the Steering Group were required to respond to a Clarification notice where the examiner needed clarity on a number of particular issues. This was completed and returned to the examiner on 17th of April. The examiner sent the report to the Steering Group for a final “Fact Check” on 1st of May and following our response, the final examination report was received on 11th of May. The report recommended to Horsham District Council (HDC) and the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) that, subject to the incorporation of the modifications set out in the report, the HNP should proceed to referendum. The Steering Group discussed the modifications with HDC and the SDNPA and all parties, finding the modifications acceptable, recommended to Henfield Parish Council (HPC) that they accept the modifications. At the Parish Council Meeting held on 12th of May HPC agreed the modifications. On 22nd June 2020 Horsham District Council (HDC) issued its Decision Statement concluding that the modified HNP complies with the

News | AUGUST 2020 legal requirements and may now proceed to referendum. At the start of the lockdown for Covid-19, the government deferred all elections and referenda until the 5th May 2021. In view of the importance of getting the HNP adopted as soon as practicable, the Steering Group asked HPC to write to HDC to explore the possibility of holding a referendum by way of a postal vote before that date. A reply to HPC`s letter is awaited. In the meantime the Plan carries significant weight in planning terms.

Scout Group is recruiting adult volunteers
1st Henfield Scout Group has been delivering ‘Skills for Life’ to the young people of Henfield and surrounding areas for 113 years, through World Wars and previous pandemics! That continues today with Scouting being successfully delivered online to our young people during lockdown. As an example, Cubs have earned over 200 badges between them since March! That success only happens through the dedication of adults who give up their time to enable the Scouting sections to deliver a balanced programme of activities, camps and support in the background. Without our leaders, assistants and young leaders we cannot run the camps, activities or evenings for the Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts and without the supporters behind the scenes we cannot maintain the hut, grounds or the detailed and varied administration that a large and successful Group requires. As we start to recover from Covid, we urgently need new leaders, and supporters so if you were once a Scout, a former leader, on a career break or just want to do something for the community, please contact us – training is provided and is good for your CV too! The Henfield Helpline will be continuing beyond the Government’s pausing of lockdown on 1 August, but not in quite the same way as previously. The phone will now be monitored 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, but not always full time, so please leave a message and we will return your call. The regular Budgens shops will continue at least into August and possibly September if there is a need and we have enough volunteers. We would encourage those that are coming out of lockdown to try and venture out in a safe way, maintaining social distancing: you will see that most shops have already limited the number of customers allowed in at any one time. We don’t know how long we will be able to provide this service but very much hope that it will be around as long as it is needed.

I am writing about your Dementia Club. It has been missed so much by my sister and I’m sure many other people who used it as well as providing much needed respite for the families caring for loved ones with dementia. There is no other service that I’m aware of that provides dementia day care in the area. YOU ARE AMAZING AND MISSED. Lillian My Dad, aged 90, loves going there for a meal. As a carer for many years now, I can honestly say that without The Haven working tirelessly to help three days a week and encourage him to join in with their activities, life would have been unbearable in the home environment. Being diagnosed with dementia is never an easy thing for a family to process but with the support of all of the staff at The Haven, the load was lightened. We must also consider the carers, too – who need time to gather their thoughts and have a chance to spend time by themselves. The Haven gives them this opportunity. Without them, I truly believe many loved ones will end up in Care Homes as the carer will no longer be able to cope. Jo

ou will have read about the uncertain future of the Henfield Haven in BN5 and the Parish Magazine last month, due to the sudden withdrawal of Impact Initiatives. Impact had been contracted to provide high needs dementia care at the Haven since 2015, so this sudden change of circumstances, brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, came as a shock to the Haven CIO, as well as the multitudes of customers, carers, volunteers, friends and local people who know how important the Haven is. A month is a long time in the life of the Haven and since then a lot has changed; the future is looking much more positive. This is down to the determination of the Haven CIO, volunteers, supporters, customers and most of all YOU – with your incredible support and encouragement! Thank YOU! A Go Fund Me page was launched (which has topped £5,000 at the time of going to press) in just one month. A campaign amongst local businesses has raised even more money, with the overall Save our Haven campaign reaching £20,000 in a few short weeks! This illustrates the strength of feeling in Henfield – we just won’t let our Haven go! There’s a lot of work still to be done and we are incredibly excited about all your inspirational fundraising ideas, enthusiasm and positivity – even with social distancing barriers, nothing will stop Henfield from Saving our Haven! Watch this space in BN5, in the Parish Magazine, Henfield Hub, BN5 website and the brand new Henfield Haven Facebook page. The future is bright Even with Covid-19 restrictions, the Haven can still operate; in fact, our presence is even MORE important! The Haven is currently run entirely by unpaid volunteers; the Café has re-opened, taking advantage of the beautiful summer weather, with socially distanced tables in the pretty shaded

Volunteers Lorette and Trish are serving their delicious lunches, coffees, home-made cakes, snacks and afternoon teas to visitors from 10am-3pm weekdays. The CIO and staff have some ideas in the pipeline for future ways to utilise the Haven, including; hosted visits for high needs dementia customers (giving 1:1 care and a welcome break for carers) and hire of the Garden Room for pre-booked and catered business meetings. Regular classes and activities will resume as soon as possible. The Haven will continue the essential work of supporting people living with dementia and their carers, who need a valuable break to recharge their batteries. Covid-19 means we need to be more creative about how we provide this essential help. How you can help We are constantly looking for volunteers. Could you spend time chatting with people? Help in the café? Help with an activity, or share a skill that would be engaging for someone who lives with dementia? Are you a keen gardener, or perhaps you run a local business and could donate your time or goods to help cut the Haven’s overheads and costs? Every penny counts! KEY HAVEN FACTS
The Henfield Haven is managed by the Henfield Haven CIO volunteers and was saved for the village back in 2015. The Haven faces another challenge with the sudden withdrawal of Impact Initiatives. The Henfield Haven CIO received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in June 2020. The Henfield Haven has provided high needs dementia care for well over 20 customers each week, giving 20 carers a well-deserved break. It is run solely by unpaid volunteers. Approximately 150 customers enjoy activities provided by the Haven each week. The Haven Café provides delicious lunches, snacks, coffee and afternoon tea for 200 people each week, acting as a lifeline for those living alone. Lorette and her team are currently caring for every Haven customer with calls, packages of food and help. As the Covid-19 situation improves, regular services will slowly resume. The Henfield Haven costs approximately £100,000 a year to run and is financially viable. Much of this is generated through the café and other services, with around £40,000 a year needed in additional donations or grants. The Haven has 60 volunteers who keep the garden beautiful, help with community lunches, bake, care, chat and offer friendship to everyone who comes to visit.

ack in the June issue of BN5 magazine we launched our Care for Carers campaign, alongside Henfield Community Partnership and with the enormous help of the Henfield Haven and Helpline. The appeal also went out to local clubs and groups and was published in the Parish Magazine and on social media. The inspiration behind our campaign was the hard work and exceptional care given by frontline carers in local care homes, they were (and still are) dealing with the exceptional workloads and extra PPE protocols put in place to keep them and their residents safe during the Covid-19 pandemic. We applaud them for all they’ve done. We also wanted to hold out a ‘virtual hand of friendship’ to the many care-home and sheltered accommodation residents to say that we’re thinking of them as they shield, it can be a very lonely time without the usual visits from friends and family. 20 | BN5 Magazine
We asked children to decorate plant pots, which we then filled with colourful geraniums. We also asked you all to donate small gifts of toiletries and little treats for carer packages; lip balms, moisturisers, hand creams and small boxes of chocolates and treats for carers. As always, the Henfield community responded with overwhelming generously and some fantastic donations began to arrive, thank you all! The local nurseries, including The Warren Playgroup and The Dove Nursery, decorated plant pots and sent their messages of support on labels. Children of key-workers at St Peter’s Primary School decorated a huge number of pots in class, too and they were all colourful, creative and inventive. The gifts started to flood in, thoughtful and useful, many accompanied by thank you cards and notes for our carers. Some lovely handmade items as well as some luxuries to help carers feel special. Stonepit Nursery were generous in providing cost-price geraniums for the pots and the Haven Ground Force team had a busy and productive morning planting them all in the decorated pots. Belinda Samrah from Henfield Helpline, myself and Sue Willis from Henfield Community Partnership then got to work wrapping 125 gift packages for carers with cellophane and ribbon, each with a message of support. Many thanks to Lorette at Henfield Haven for allowing us to take over the cafe with yards of cellophane, ribbons and boxes! We then received an unexpected donation of beautiful knitted rainbows from the Knit and Natter group who meet at Rayner Court, they’re beautiful and were delivered to the care homes along with the gifts and geraniums. Helpline, helped with the lovely job of delivering the gifts to Red Oaks, Upper Mead, Terry’s Cross and Rayner Court. Others were delivered to Haven customers and carers. Linda Ryan from Red Oaks said: “Wow! I was overwhelmed today by the generosity of the local community with the flowers and the rainbows and gifts. We have had a great reception from the residents, the messages from the children are really heartfelt and you can see that so much effort has gone into the decorating of the pots.” Amy Lutman from Upper Mead said: “Thank you so, so much from all the staff at Upper Mead for our wonderful care packs! The support form everyone throughout this pandemic has been overwhelming and we are so grateful.” Thank you ALL for your generosity and kindness to those who really need our support right now.

TRUCKIN’ FOR THE HAVEN 22 | BN5 Magazine
ocal trading estates like the Winterpick, Firsland, Mackley and Henfield Business Parks are home to the many businesses who make a massive contribution to our local economy and provide employment for many local families. They’re part of the fabric of our village and crucial to our community. You’ll probably know people who work for them, and if you do then you’ll know these businesses are essential for keeping our roads built, our aircraft engines maintained, our recycling processed and our roads cleaned, not just in Sussex but up and down the country. Many of these businesses have grown from the innovation, determination and sheer hard work of local families, and along the way they have fostered very deep roots in this village. Southdown Engineers is one such business. With its roots going back to 1972 when Don Preston from Blackstone purchased his first truck, Southdown is a leading UK haulier of plant and heavy loads as well as crane and road-plate hire and parts. Don sadly passed away in 2008 and the reins were passed into the capable hands of his son and business partner Sean, who has been an involved with trucks and transport since he can remember. When Sean heard that the Henfield Haven was under threat of closure due to the sudden withdrawal of their dementia care provider Impact Initiatives, he contacted Haven CIO Trustee Malcolm Eastwood to see what could be done. Sean said: “It’s true that all of us have been knocked for six by this pandemic. There’s little doubt that most of society will eventually pick itself up and dust itself off. But it’s how we now deal with the most vulnerable amongst us that will come to define the real value of our way of life for the future. Henfield continues to demonstrate what’s meant by a good ‘community’. It goes beyond geography and formal institutions. It’s an ecosystem of roots and connections and shared common values that run deep. Deep enough even to weather a storm like this one and respond in a positive way. “It’s worth noting too that the way ‘The Haven’ is run that it is not just a receiver of worthy donations directed to help those with dementia. What it gives back by the way of wellbeing, purpose and civic pride to the volunteers, the folks that run it and ultimately, the village at large should not be underestimated.” After Sean’s conversation with Malcolm, the seed of an idea started to grow in his mind. of the Haven and how, by collaborating, they may be able to throw a crucial lifeline to this village institution. His idea was simple, but effective. Each business was asked to donate the value of filling one or more of their large vehicles with diesel; aligning the importance of the Haven with the importance of fuel in one of their trucks, the lifeblood of their businesses. And so, Truckin’ for the Haven was born. The response to Sean’s appeal for help was immediate and unreserved, with four local companies lending their support within 24 hours and others ready to join the campaign. Nick Hawthorne is Operations Director of family business Olus Environmental and Heritage Products, who recycle the brown-lidded bin green waste from several local counties to produce organic compost, as well as supplying logs and landscaping materials. They recycle over 50,000 tonnes of wood a year into Olus biomass product at the Winterpick estate. Nick explained why he was backing Sean’s proposal. “We were always aware of the Haven and what a great job they do for the elderly, especially the dementia care they provide for the village. When we heard that there might be a possibility of them having to close, we knew we had to get behind them as once something like the Haven closes it would be very doubtful it would ever return. We are more than happy to give our support, I think the real heroes are all the volunteers that give up their time to help run the Haven, without them it would not be possible. So, a big thank you to them all and long may the Haven be a place of community spirit.” Sweeptech Environmental Services, whose name you will recognise from the striking yellow road-cleaning lorries on Sussex roads, were equally encouraged. Sweeptech have 40 years’ experience in waste management, not just road cleaning but waste-water recycling and consultancy, hazardous waste removal and emergency flood response. They are passionate about protecting and improving our environment,

so their support of the Henfield Haven is a natural extension of Sweeptech company ethos. CEO Martin Smith explained more: “We were really concerned to learn from Sean about the unwitting challenge facing the Haven and the potential for it to intensify the vulnerability of those needing its support, if not quickly corrected. With Wellbeing and ESG sitting deeply within Sweeptech culture, and our admiration for the volunteers who really make this work, it was an easy decision to support such a worthy project.” Sean Preston said: “The response I had to my call to arms has been wonderful and these local firms have been very decent and generous with their support. I’d certainly encourage any other rightminded local businesses in a position to help to consider their own version of ‘a tank of diesel’ and join our convoy of little ships to help keep the Henfield Haven the unique safe harbour that it has become.” Henfield Haven CIO chairman Digby Stephenson responded: “In the aftermath of the bombshell that hit us when we were deserted by our service provider, I am humbled and amazed by the wave of emotion, support and donations that we have received. Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised; after all, this is Heavenly Henfield doing what it does best – coming together to protect and preserve a jewel in our special community. I am truly grateful for the tremendous contribution from our local businesses. Times must be difficult for them in the current emergency, so their willingness to help is doubly appreciated.”

his latest book written by local author Eddie Colgate presents a fascinating picture of how Henfield grew and developed during the 19th century. It features the lives of many interesting local characters as well as some of the mischief making and skulduggery that went on too! Here’s a taste of what it contains from Eddie himself: “Wander round St Peter’s churchyard and you can find memorial stones to some of the characters from that time; miller Robert Loase and his widow; school teacher William Godley with his wife and infant son; high street draper Henry Longley; and farmer Sydney Street who could not accept his bull was dangerous. But you will not find headstones for Ellen Shoulders and George Ede who both died the same winter’s day in the Nep Town Workhouse aged two years old - their parents too poor to maintain a home. Who knows which part of the churchyard the paupers were buried in? Widower John Peters is not there either; he was put on a long cruise to Van Dieman’s Land (now known as Tasmania), the destination of transported criminals. Barrow Hill House, built in 1811, and its gardens have gone but the owner, influential William Borrer, looms large. So does touchy ‘Lossam’ Ward whose cottage might still be intact behind the White House on the common; how he hated the “D----- geese” invading his garden! Prospect Cottage, home of kindly spinster Ann Gander, stands firm in Golden Square. The nearby Bee Hive Brewery has disappeared - it was at 30 | BN5 Magazine
the end of the Town Field (you have to hunt for grass there now!) where most big social events took place. You will surely know the current status of the ‘L shaped’ tenements for the poor on the common but you may have to search for the ruins of Dogham Place further on; 12 metres long and home for two families. Men worked long hours for little money and housewives laboured in the kitchen. Hunting and shooting were the domain of gentlemen, apart from the poacher’s risky forays. Reflections on Spring at New Inn Farm
L
ocal farmer Tilly Robertson gives us her reflections on lockdown in the countryside and memories of her son Jamie Robertson who sadly passed away in 2019. “I’ve always led such a ridiculously busy life, what with managing the livery yard and holiday company, teaching riding and bringing up my son Jamie single handedly, that I never had time to sit still and reflect. That is until lockdown! Inspired by the article ‘Wildlife through the Window’ in the June edition of BN5 Magazine I decided to treat myself to my wonderful shepherd’s crook bird feeder. It’s been wonderful! The picture shows a few of my visitors: blue tits, a pair of woodpeckers and so many more. It’s a real joy to wake up to every morning. My son Jamie kept ewes for training his dogs – ‘One Man and his Dog’ stuff. One of these gave birth last summer to a lamb which we named ‘July’ and it was a joy to have one of Jamie’s lambs to carry on the line. Jamie’s six year old son, Jonah, bottle fed July for six weeks – we start them young in farming! July was much too
young at five months-old to go to the ram last autumn and so she was carefully kept separate with some other young lambs. So imagine our surprise at the beginning of May when we found that July had given birth to a lamb of her own! I do remember that July escaped into the field with the ram last autumn for about 10 minutes but we retrieved her and thought no more about it. But July had obviously caught the eye of the ram and the result was another lamb who we named May (or Mayhem as her full title is!). July has been wonderful for a mum one so young and May is a bonny lamb. Talk about the virgin birth! The picture shows mum July and baby May plus Claire with Reef and Crisp, two of Jamie’s trialling dogs. Reef and Crisp are still working but as we are no experts in training sheep dogs, I’m sure they regularly wonder where the real shepherd is with his command of crook and whistle. Thoughts of Jamie as ever for us all.”

A
fter a career in higher education, local resident Alison Crowe followed her passion to achieve her creative dream – becoming a full-time jeweller! Making jewellery started off as a hobby for Alison as she explains: “I’ve made jewellery for around 20 years, but my first taste of working with precious metals came in 2012 after which I was totally hooked! I was still working full-time then, so had to wait until 2017 to make jewellery my main occupation.” Alison worked with many highly creative people at the University of Brighton Arts Faculty and while there, decided to pursue her creative dream full time. With a background in art and design history, Alison undertook a part-time course at Sussex Downs College in Lewes, learning traditional silversmithing skills. She then consolidated this foundation of knowledge with two years intensive private tuition with a highly experienced professional jeweller. Alison is inspired by a range of influences as she creates her original jewellery: “My style is definitely contemporary and is quite often influenced by shapes or forms found in the natural environment. I’m also passionate about 20th century art, since this is the subject I have studied in depth and I often return to it in my designs. Sometimes the shape or colour of a gemstone is so perfect and beautiful, I create a design around it.” As well as artistic creativity, the actual process of making jewellery is complex and requires a number of other skills including dexterity,

attention to detail, good hand-eye coordination and patience. It also requires the practical ability to work with tools and materials, such as precious metals and gemstones. Alison describes how the process works: “Whether I am designing a special piece for a client or a stock item, I usually draw out my design ideas to achieve the correct scale and balance. I then fabricate it using sheet silver and wire, creating every element from scratch using a piercing saw, a gas torch to solder, and various hammers and a rolling mill to create texture. I also do some casting, either creating a piece carved in wax first or from an existing object such as a fossil.” From her studio, Alison can create jewellery from any type of precious metal, including gold, although silver remains her favourite metal because of the creative opportunities it provides. Her jewellery range includes bangles, rings, earrings, pendants and necklaces – when asked what her favourite type of jewellery is she laughs: “Earrings have always been a passion of mine – I consider them absolutely essential daily wear!” Having lived in Henfield for 20 years, Alison loves living and working in the village: “As an ex-city dweller I appreciate everything about it – and even more so during the recent lock-down. The community spirit here is great and I also get huge enjoyment from walking in the surrounding countryside.”

All Things Covered are collecting old laptops, tablets and iPads to sell and raise money for the Henfield Haven Bespoke Interiors are also raising money for the Henfield Haven by collecting old printer cartridges for recycling. Budgens, Hamfelds and One-Stop and all collect used household batteries which are then recycled to recover the raw materials. Christina’s Afternoon Tea Shop will accept donations of stamps or stamp collections which will then be sold to raise money for the Henfield Haven. Cornerweighs is supporting the Horsham Springboard project by collecting plastic milk bottle tops on their behalf to be recycled. Gallery BN5 and Henfield Haven are collecting old mobile phone to raise money for the Henfield Haven. Goodness Henfield are supporting Terracycle by collecting old pens (of any kind) and empty glue sticks which are then recycled into new pens and other products. Henfield Club are supporting Sussex homeless people by collecting unwanted tents, sleeping bags and rucksacks. Henfield Eyecare will accept your old or damaged glasses which are sent by the Henfield Lions to be re-used by those in need. They also take contact lenses (and their packaging) which can be recycled into plastic furniture. Remembering Dame Vera Lynn
D
ame Vera Lynn was an incredible lady talented, brave, generous, gracious and beautiful. When she died earlier this year we were touched by the number of Henfield residents who shared their memories of meeting her with us. “In the summer of 2011 our Year 3 students were studying World War 2 and we decided to invite Her Majesty the Queen to our end of project street party. When Her Majesty politely declined via one of her ladies-in-waiting, we wrote to Dame Vera Lynn. We were thrilled when her daughter Virginia wrote back to say that Dame Vera would be delighted to attend! We agreed a date and on the day of the visit the children all dressed up as evacuees and prepared questions to ask her. The weather was perfect so we all sat in the school garden. Dame Vera stayed for around two hours, answering all the students questions enthusiastically and giving each one a handsigned autograph. Right at the end of the visit, one of the students suddenly started singing ‘We’ll meet again’ unprompted Dame Vera joined in with the singing, followed by the rest of the students and staff – it was a lovely moment and one of the best memories of my 40-year teaching career!” Jane Stephenson “My husband looked after her swimming pool for years. Biography
Born during the First World War, Vera Lynn became a singer at a very early age, but it was during the Second World War when she really made her name becoming one of the most popular performers of the time. Vera Lynn performed for the general public in dance halls and even on the platforms of underground stations in London which were being used as mass air-raid shelters. She also hosted her own radio programme and appeared in films. However it was in the hearts of servicemen that Vera Lynn held a special place, quickly becoming known as ‘the Forces Sweetheart’ for her work in entertaining British troops both at home and abroad through the Entertainments National Service Association. In a month when we are remembering Victory in Japan (VJ) day, it’s worth remembering how incredibly brave she was in

travelling half way round the world to Japaneseoccupied Burma in order to perform to British guerrilla units in very challenging conditions. This bravery was recognised in 1985 when she was awarded the Burma Star medal. Her massively successful recording career spanned seven decades from the 1930’s through to the 1990’s. In the 1952 she was the first British performer to top the American music charts and she also had a UK number one hit in 1954. She also hosted her own television shows throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s and was a regular guest on variety shows. Vera Lynn supported many charities throughout her life and it was for her charitable services that she was made a Dame. Her particular passion was helping children with cerebral palsy. Inheritance Tax Matters Planning ahead allows you to set out clearly who should get what from your Estate on your death. It also means you can maximise Inheritance Tax (IHT) reliefs and exemptions should your Estate be worth more than the IHT threshold or ‘nil-rate band’ when you die (currently £325,000). A growing number of people are becoming liable to IHT because of an increase in property prices from the early 1980s to date. IHT applies to your entire worldwide Estate (including property, savings, investments and chattels) and is charged at 40%. There are various exemptions which enable you to reduce your potential IHT bill, but these should be used with care.
Lifetime gifts are treated in a number of ways for IHT purposes. However, from an IHT point of view, you only need to worry about making gifts if you think your Estate – including the value of any gifts you make – might exceed the IHT threshold when you die. If your Estate is over the threshold, any gifts that you make more than seven years before you die may be exempt from IHT.
If you are unmarried/not in a civil partnership and living together then, quite simply, you definitely need a will, otherwise your loved one will receive absolutely nothing from your Estate upon your death. The deceased’s parents, siblings and even ex-partner can be potential beneficiaries, rather than the surviving partner. This can cause untold misery, particularly where the home was owned solely by the partner who died. Divorce, or dissolution of a civil partnership, could cause parts of your will to be nullified and marriage or remarriage may completely invalidate a current will. If you change an existing will, it is generally a good idea to start the new one with a clause stating that it ‘revokes all previous wills’.
