Editor’s Letter
The Henfield Easter Bunny Trail is back! This time, with cute & cuddly baby bunnies named by all our high Street shops, just waiting for your little people to find them!
All 23 of these multi-coloured baby bunnies will be given as competition prizes, so enjoy the trail and complete the form on page 32 (the other side of the form appears on page 33, after the High Street Shopping pull-out). If you need more copies you can download them from our website.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Horsham District Council who have sponsored the 16 page pull-out in our magazine this month. It’s a useful shopping guide while we have a ‘gap’ between supermarkets. It has extended opening hours, delivery information and details any new products the High Street shops are stocking while Sainsbury’s is under construction.
You’ll also find opening hours and contact details of all our local takeaways and convenience options, we really hope you find it useful. It’ll be available digitally on our website, too.
There’s an extended Easter ‘what’s on’ on page 6, for more details, maps and booking links please go to our website Events page and click on the ‘Easter’ tab.

Co-Op donation
In February the Henfield Haven was delighted to receive a £300 donation from the Co-Op. The Haven was one of three local charities chosen by customers of the Co-Ops in Cowfold and Partridge Green to benefit from the local community fund. Every time Co-Op members buy selected Co-op branded products and services, 2p in every pound is donated to local causes and charities.
A big thank you to the staff and customers from our local Co-Ops for their ongoing support.

Because we re-distribute food, we have no idea from session to session what items we will have in stock, so you never know what you may get! There may also be daily specials when we have a surplus of certain items - please only take what you will use so food can be shared by all. We try to post photos 24 hours before each session of what we have, so follow our Facebook page to keep up to date.
Working with our local stores such as Swains Farm Shop and Truffles Bakery, our volunteers collect, safely store and then distribute the food that would otherwise be destined for the bin. We’re very thorough when it comes to the safety of food, ensuring it’s always stored correctly and inspected in line with Food Safety Standards. Food from the fridge is safe to eat when you take it but please follow any advice given on labels to ensure it remains safe to eat afterwards.
Other than supporting us with taking the food we save, you’re more than welcome to make voluntary monetary donations to help support our running costs and if you can spare a few hours each month to volunteer as a Fridge Cleaner or a Food Collector during evening/weekends, we would love to hear from you! Repair Café
When we started the Repair Café, covid unfortunately intervened, so our volunteers have been repairing countless items (including: electric, leather and metal items, clothes and jewellery), from home, liaising with the Sustainable Henfield 2030 stall at the Monday Market.
However, starting in May 2023 we are planning to offer a more traditional Repair Cafe based at the Henfield Haven on a Saturday. Hopefully this will give more people the opportunity to bring their item to be mended whilst having a cup of coffee and a chat. More details will follow in next month’s BN5, but in the meantime we would love more volunteers so if you have a skill you would be happy to share do contact us at repairs@sustainablehennfield2030.org or give Mel Hempleman a ring on 01273 494113.

Shout out for Volunteer Walking Guides
Henfield Community Partnership (HCP) is working with Horsham District Council Wellbeing (HDCW) to offer a variety of free, sociable and familyfriendly regular guided walks in and around Henfield. The aim is to encourage participants to be active, connect with others and improve their wellbeing.
In order to do this, we need volunteer guides who are prepared to lead free walks locally for a couple of hours each month. We have a range
of local trails already set up (see hiddenhenfield. co.uk) and more are being considered. We’re looking to offer walks of different distances and levels and for different participant groups including beginners, mums with prams, toddlers, seniors, families, etc.
A training day for volunteer walk leaders is being held in April by Horsham District Council and it will cover everything you would need to know. So, if you would like to make a real difference in your community and have fun; walk with other people for company; encourage, motivate and support others to be active; help with maintaining your overall wellbeing; and have a chance to be inspired by our beautiful countryside and nature, then do please get in touch on henfieldcp.info@ gmail.com , 01273 494822 or 07983 402008.

How to ‘remember’ all those passwords
Knowing the difference between a login ID and a password is important, but being able to remember them all is impossible! A survey in 2020 found that many people have 85 different ones to remember, but in a further survey in 2022 that had increased to 100 (and that’s just an average)! This important topic will be covered at the Computer Club’s next presentation on Wednesday 19 April where you will learn the surest methods of keeping them safe and accessible.
When something unexpected happens how would your nearest and dearest gain access to your digital life (yes, we all have one), in order to ‘keep things going’ until you can manage again? We’ll discuss a few options, and the practical value of Power of Attorney. The big online organisations all have very different attitudes to

Get ready for HM The King’s Coronation celebrations
Plans are well underway to help Horsham District residents celebrate HM The King’s Coronation on Saturday 6 May 2023 and over the Bank Holiday weekend. There are many ways you can get involved in the celebrations, with communities invited to share food and fun together at a Coronation Big Lunch or street party to help mark this important day in our nation’s history. Licence application fees for street parties have been waived for events over the Bank Holiday weekend, and grants of up to £200 have been offered by Horsham District Council to participating parish and neighbourhood councils to help support their local celebrations. Contact your Parish Council to find out what may be planned in your local area.
Horsham will certainly be playing its part in the celebrations over the special bank holiday weekend from Saturday 6 to Monday 8 May. Look out for a mini funfair in Horsham Park from 5-8 May, big band sounds in the Park, and a Street Party with a difference on Sunday including live music, street food and some right royal entertainment for all to enjoy! Those with young children may also like to drop into Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to enjoy making Coronation-themed crafts over the extended bank holiday weekend.
And don’t forget that residents are invited to get involved in volunteering on Monday 8 May as part of The Big Help Out. Volunteering in Horsham District takes place anywhere, anytime. The Big Help Out is an extra opportunity this year for everyone to join in! Find out more at www.horsham.gov.uk/coronation

Guiding in Henfield – urgent update
In 1941, 1st Henfield Guides became the first Girlguiding unit to open in Henfield, followed in later years by another Guide unit, a Ranger unit, three (now two) Brownie units and two Rainbow units.
Hundreds, maybe thousands of girls from Henfield have passed through the unit, earning badges, learning skills for their future and going on camps and holidays in the UK and abroad. So it is with regret that we now have to announce the closure of the unit. We still have girls who want to be a Guide with the unit, but we do not have enough volunteers to keep the unit open. 1st Henfield Guides will close at Easter unless we get at least two volunteers to take over running the unit.
If you think you could help us keep the unit open, please register your interest in volunteering via www.girlguiding.org.uk. Registering does not commit you, if you subsequently decide it isn’t for you. All training is provided, no previous Guiding experience is required.

Tennis Club Jumble
Henfield Tennis Club (HTC) enjoyed a healthy profit from the recent Jumble Sale held in The Henfield Hall. Many thanks are due to those who gave up their time to help. Sincere thanks to local businesses who donated prizes for the bumper raffle, namely Rushfield’s Plant Centre, The Post Office Cafe, Jeremy’s Vegetable Store and Jasmine’s Florist. Thanks also to everyone who came along and got a bargain or two and enjoyed some of our scrumptious homemade cakes! The successful result was due to the team spirit of Henfield Tennis Club members (plus family and friends) who pulled together to make this a lot of fun on a busy Saturday afternoon. HTC are also delighted to report that our recently damaged Clubhouse will soon be back up and running, so now would be a great time to come and join in with many of the sporting and social activities that we have to offer. The weather is getting warmer – play tennis this Spring! Check out www. henfieldtennisclub.com for further information.

Have you ever camped at Hillside Scout Campsite in Small Dole?
The campsite was established in 1936 and has been used by Scouts and many other youth groups from East and West Sussex ever since. Today it continues to provide an escape from the urban environment, giving youngsters the opportunity to enjoy the countryside and camping experience. Over the years this 21-acre site has been upgraded from a metal tin hut to a brick-

Friends of St Barnabas help the B-P Guild
When you think of The Henfield BP Guild, what springs to mind? Outings and dinners for Senior Citizens? Their Christmas Sleigh giving us cheer? Transporting supplies heading for Ukraine? So much service for others in the community and beyond. But on Sunday 5 March they were guests at a celebratory lunch for members, family and friends. The Friends of St Barnabas served elegant canapés and a full Sunday roast (compliments to the team at Relish)… and, just for once, the Guildsmen did not have to wash up - that task was left to the Friends volunteers who added to the fun with some kitchen karaoke singing! The Friends thank the Guild for their contribution of £280 to the Hospice funds and for their kind invitation to join in their fun. A great time was had by all!

Foodbank Run by Henfield Joggers
The very energetic and generous runners from Henfield Joggers, alongside some guest runners, completed a Foodbank Run on Saturday 11 February. The Run, part of a nationwide initiative to raise awareness of Foodbanks across the country, was in aid of Horsham District Foodbank, which supports Henfield with their Hub Van once a week and with parcels of essential items for delivery in the village. The run went from Henfield Leisure Centre to Berretts Farm and participants donated over 100 items as well a sum of cash to the Horsham District Foodbank.
Thank you to Paul Crowe from Henfield Joggers for organising, to Roger Bentley for collecting the donations and to all the energetic and generous runners from this very friendly club. Your generosity is appreciated. Emma Cole

Henfield Annual Parish Meeting Report
The Henfield Annual Parish Meeting on 7th March was a great success, with Councillors and guest speakers addressing a packed hall with prepandemic numbers of attendees, as well as live streaming to an online audience. Those joining online encountered some technical problems with the audio, which will be addressed for the next APM, Henfield Parish Council apologised to those who were affected.
Parish Council Chairman Malcolm Eastwood chaired his final APM, as he will be standing down after six years as Chairman. Under his chairmanship Council has achieved some very important individual improvements to Henfield including a new link road and car park, the opposition of a market town next to Henfield, improvements to the environment, as well as the usual day-to-day objectives. He also undertook a major council restructure, increasing the organisation’s efficiency. He’s overseen some dramatic changes to the village during the pandemic and also took on the role of Chairman of the Horsham District Association of Local Councils, which represents the collective interests of 32 local parish councils.
Malcolm expressed the thanks of all Henfield Councillors and residents for the incredible service given by Cllr Mike Morgan, who stands down from his role as a Henfield representative at Horsham District Council this year. Mike has enormous experience and has represented Henfield as an Independent with enormous success. In addition, he has been a Henfield Parish Councillor for 35 years. Malcolm ended his address with his thanks to the local people who have welcomed Ukrainian families to their homes and businesses over the last year, and his hopes for their futures and that by next year the horrific war will have ended.
The Horsham District Council Henfield Parish precept for 2023/24 has now been set at £10 per
annum, which is up 10% for a band D property. Presentations came from three guest organisations; firstly Parish Councillors Elaine Goodyear and Nita Farrell spoke about the Council’s Year of Young People initiative. The village has 900 residents below 18 years old and this sector of our community has been overlooked in the past. Appalling transport links in and out of the village leave young people in

danger of isolation and exclusion. Henfield Parish Council have access to UK Prosperity Fund to improve the outlook for local young people, focussing on ideas are led by the young people themselves.
There are several initiatives, some have already been launched (see page 31 of March BN5 for further details) including safe spaces for socialising, gym sessions, careers fairs, a Skate Jam and cinema nights. Many involve local businesses and existing resources, but developed with the specific 11-18 year age group in mind. Anyone interested in being involved please contact the Parish Office, your input (whether as a parent, grandparent or young person yourself) would be welcomed.
A presentation by Community Transport Sussex (CTS) CEO Matt Roberts launched the “Electric Community Car Club” in Henfield, which should be active by June. The Club will have two electric cars, parked & recharged at one of the village car parks, which will be available for use by local people, with membership costing in the region of £5 per month and hire rates around £4 per hour. The vehicles are semi-accessible with swing-out seats and it’s hoped that they can be used by local volunteers to transport people who are unable to drive themselves, if you can spare some time please contact CTS by emailing enquiry@ctsussex.org.uk. Henfield is set to be
the first village in Sussex to have the Community EV Club, with an 18-month trial which will then be rolled-out further if successful. Please look out for the article in April BN5 magazine which will explain more.
The final speaker was Chief Constable Jo Shiner from Sussex Police. Jo is the first female Chief Constable in the history of this large Police Force and has 30 years’ service in policing. She is also National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for Roads Policing and her presentation focussed on how crime on roads needs to be prioritised, especially as 1,558 people were killed on UK roads last year. She spoke about her priorities for policing; to protect communities, catch criminals and deliver an outstanding service to Sussex, with the service receiving an average 791 emergency 999 calls each day.
Open to the floor, there were questions and comments from various residents including the policing of yellow lines and zig-zags outside One Stop, speeding in the Upper Station Road, Church Street, Deer Park and Henfield Common area, as well as the lack of a visible police presence in the village, which was addressed by Henfield’s PCSO Graeme Foster, who is increasing his surgeries and visible presence in the village as much as he is able, we will publicise these on our website henfieldbn5.co.uk.

MEN...
DO YOU KNOW YOUR PSA LEVELS?
Book your FREE PSA Blood Test
Saturday 22nd April, The Henfield Hall
Organised by the Henfield B-P Guild, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO).
Tests are suitable for men over 45. Donations of the cost of the test (£15) welcomed. Book online only: www.pcaso.org/psa-testing/
Prostate cancer is a maleonly disease and is the third most common cancer to die from in the UK, after lung and bowel cancer. Currently 45,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year.
Prostate cancer is not always life-threatening, but the earlier you catch it the more likely it is to be cured. Regular screening through a simple blood test can help diagnose prostate cancer early and this is why Henfield B-P Guild, in partnership with the Prostate Cancer Support Organisation (PCaSO), are offering free PSA blood tests for men over the age of 45.
On the day, a blood sample will be taken by a trained phlebotomist, just like in a hospital or a doctors surgery, and will take just two or three minutes. The sample will then be taken to a laboratory where it will be analysed by professionals and the results will be posted or emailed back to you. The PSA test does not diagnose cancer or any other illness –that is job of your doctor.
Ideally all men over 45 should get a PSA blood test on a regular basis so that you and your GP can track any changes over time. There is currently no NHS screening programme and so it is support groups such as PCaSO who organise screening sessions. Although they do this as a free service, each test costs them around £15 to administer, so donations are very welcome if you can afford to do so.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?
Early prostate cancer does not usually cause any symptoms. If the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on your urethra, the symptoms of prostate cancer can be difficult to distinguish from those of prostate enlargement. They may include:
• needing to pee more frequently, often during the night
• needing to rush to the toilet
• difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy)
• straining or taking a long time while peeing
• weak flow
• feeling that your bladder has not fully emptied
• blood in urine or semen
You should see your GP if you have any of these symptoms. It’s much more likely to be prostate enlargement, but it’s important to rule out cancer.

If you are interested in being part of this new venture, please contact henfieldmarket@gmail.com for further information.
The Easter bunny has been busy preparing for Easter, but all her baby bunnies have hopped off and hidden themselves in Henfield High Street shop windows. Can you help the Easter bunny locate her babies before they get up to all sorts of mischief?
These cheeky Baby Bunnies each have a name tag and you will find them hiding in the windows of the participating shops and businesses up and down the Henfield High Street from Friday 24th March 2023 until after the Easter weekend.
All you have to do is find the name of each Baby Bunny and write it down in the correct space of the Henfield Baby Bunny Trail entry form, printed overleaf, or you can download a copy from our website www.henfieldbn5.co.uk.
Parents, grandparents or carers can help younger children with this activity.
Once you have found the names of all the mischievous Baby Bunnies, add your contact details and post your completed form through the letter box of BN5 Magazine (First Floor, Jasmine House, High Street BN5 9HN – the doorway next to Jasmine’s Florist entrance) by Midday on Friday 14th April 2023. The 23 winners will be drawn out of a hat after this date and will receive a gorgeous Jellycat Baby Bunny as a prize, you can see them on our front cover and in shop windows along the High Street!
You can also have fun with our three colouring downloads, take a look at our website, there will be prizes for our favourites!
Thanks to all the High Street businesses for their brilliant Easter Bunny displays.

SHOPPING IN HENFIELD
Stuck without a supermarket? Here are some solutions!
Sainsbury’s are moving ahead to create a new store for Henfield in the former Budgens supermarket in the high street. Whilst they are on track to open in May, this 16-page pull-out (generously sponsored by Horsham District Council) is a timely reminder of all the wonderful retail options available in Henfield and the surrounding area, showing that our high street can provide for almost all your shopping needs.
Many shops are stepping up with new ranges and extended opening hours making it easier than ever to shop locally and support the local economy. The content is provided through a collaboration of Henfield Community Partnership, BN5 Magazine and local businesses.
In directory form, with icons indicating enhanced opening hours, delivery options, click & collect and transport information, you’ll be able to easily locate all that you need under the following headings:
Huge thanks to Horsham District Council for supporting this initiative and to Henfield Community Partnership for their additional research. Please note, opening times and content is correct at time of going to print.

Cornerweighs
ago as a “scoop retail food outlet”. Over the years we reduced our loose food offerings as people appeared not to have the time, until 2018. Gathering food from bins is not a new concept, however, we have applied it to health foods, which I believe are ideally suited. Best news yet, we have teamed up with The Ladybirds (former W.I. members), who are craft orientated and they will be making assorted sized bags for you to gather your food in. We love the idea of this partnership which celebrates community, the need for us all to be involved and a step closer to zero waste.

The story of the Easter bunny
Rabbits usually give birth to a big litter of babies (called kittens), so they have become a symbol of new life. Legend has it that the Easter Bunny decorates and hides eggs, as they are also a symbol of new life. This is why some children might enjoy Easter egg hunts as part of the festival and why the Easter bunny is responsible for delivering chocolate eggs and sweets.
In other countries, the Easter traditions are different: in Switzerland Easter eggs are delivered by a cuckoo, in Germany they’re delivered by a fox or a rooster and in Australia they’re delivered by a bilby (an endangered native animal). In France Easter eggs are not delivered by an animal but by church bells instead!

HENFIELD ALL SET FOR FIRST ELECTRIC COMMUNITY CAR CLUB IN SUSSEX
Henfield is set to create a Sussex first this summer with the creation of a highly innovative community scheme where second car owners are encouraged to ditch their spare motors and hire an electric vehicle when they need it.
Across West Sussex there are approximately 600 cars per 1000 residents and approximately 29% of households have two or more cars. In Henfield, this means the village has over 3,300 cars on the road with all the carbon emissions that come with that.
Community Transport Sussex (CTS) is a leading provider of community transport services in Sussex, working in practical and creative ways to reduce social isolation across the county through the provision of safe, accessible, supported, door-to-door transport for those who have difficulty accessing the mainstream transport network. It has been on a mission to promote the use of zero emission vehicles in Sussex which will reduce fossil fuelled journeys and Henfield has been selected to play a huge part in this as the location for the first Electric Community Car Club in Sussex.
Launching in June 2023, the Electric Community Car Club will be user-friendly as well as cost effective – a sustainable asset for the village as
it will be residents that run and manage it. It will be a prime example of a local community taking positive action to help the environment and to reduce the use of two cars in households. This has not only benefits for the aesthetic look of the village by reducing the number of cars but residents will be taking meaningful action to help the environment. Also, anyone with mobility difficulties can easily access the vehicles. Running an average car these days can cost more than £3,500 annually. This club incurs a small membership fee of £5 per month, anyone can rent a car from the club for £4 per hour for the first three hours. CT Sussex will be working with the Henfield Parish Council, WSCC and Connected Kerb as the charging points will be installed at the Henfield Hall and Library. One of the aims of the club is to have a positive environmental impact by reducing the need for a second car and to bring the community together giving residents a tangible sense of ownership. Volunteers and a local steering group will be recruited. Supported by the CT Sussex development worker will have overall responsibility for the day to day running of the club.

Chillout @
Henfield Youth Club 2023
Wow! What a fantastic start to 2023 for our members at Chillout @ Henfield Youth Club!
Our active junior group have enjoyed taking part in all our activities so far this year, including making a wishing-well to capture their hopes and wishes for the year, celebrating Chinese New Year and making pizzas! We’ve also welcomed a new junior volunteer who is taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and we are very proud to support her with this. She joins our two existing volunteers who are Senior members who want to help out with the Junior Group. Our Senior group is also growing week-by-week and the young people are busy making it their own. We’ve made clocks out of recycled vinyl albums and CD’s, celebrated Chinese New Year and made pizzas too.
We have some very exciting plans this year! We’re planning to open more often and we’re working on re-designing our kitchen to accommodate a more café-style environment to appeal to our ‘older’ young people in the community. We aim to
start opening on a Friday evening… so watch this space for more details! Alongside this we’ve also signed up to the NHS sexual health service and young people can now ‘click and collect’ for their condoms and other general health support!
The Henfield community shows us an incredible amount of support and we are very grateful for it. We’ve been supported by donations for the additional opening and redesign of the kitchen from Horsham District Council, the Kindersley Trust and our lovely BP Guild - we can’t thank you all enough. And we would like a big shout out to Sustainable Henfield for all their help with the recycling project selling donated items on Ebay. This has brought in some amazing funds already this year, so a huge ‘thank you’ to them!
We would like to wish all of our fantastic community a really great rest of the year- we’re so lucky in Henfield to have such a wide range of activities and events on offer and we look forward to joining you all at some of the ones that are planned over the next few months!

Henfield Community Canopy is the group working on planting trees on Henfield village streets – the name change aims to reflect that we want community involvement and communication on every new street tree proposed.
The 25 new street trees planted in December are now budding into leaf and some will break into blossom over the coming months. David Bulmer who requested a new tree on the verge by his house wrote: “Thank you for sorting the tree planting. They all look great. We’re looking forward to seeing them in summer!” Very soon we will need to be watering the trees once-a-week. We have some willing volunteer ‘waterers’, but we need more! We have been offered the loan of a water bowser; all we need now is a car with a ball towbar! Please get in touch if you can help in any way.
Residents have been coming forward for new requests for tree planting for this year, especially on Wantley and Flower Farm Close, and it’s been great to meet and talk with them about their wishes and ideas for beautifying the communal green spaces around them. The tree planting is done via the West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) ‘Donate a Tree’ scheme which covers all the grass verges they own. Each tree currently costs approximately £210, and this includes verges being checked by WSCC for potential power and water issues, for safe driving sightlines, and the cost of planting, staking and yearly checks.
Last year we raised funds through GoFundMe gofund.me/a55e3414 and we were very grateful for all the donations received from residents, community groups and Henfield Parish Council (who provided the majority of the funding)..
Funding for this year is already underway; if households or even whole streets can club together to contribute to planting a tree this will really help us in our applications for further funding as it demonstrates community support and enthusiasm for trees. Please get in touch on achristie.42@btinternet.com or 07786 390448 if you would like to request a street tree this year. And finally, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by a rich heritage of ancient trees, many of them oaks, an iconic British tree. These trees are vital to Henfield looking and feeling like a rural parish with a strong connection to its history. Looking at Henfield Museum’s Arborea page, it’s clear to see that some of the village’s oldest trees have carried great meaning and value for people over the years. Some of these ancient trees already benefit from the protection afforded by Tree Preservation orders, but there’s scope for more. To help safeguard our existing tree canopy, Henfield Parish Council want to encourage residents to propose other veteran trees that may also benefit from Tree Preservation orders.
I’ll leave the last word with Sir David Attenborough: “Ancient trees are precious. There is little else on Earth that plays host to such a rich community of life within a single living organism”

Innovate for high performance
Those of us who precede millennials may remember a time when, in exchange for some hard graft, employees received nominal annual pay rises, maybe also a Christmas bonus and, if they stayed the course, recognition for long service.
Today such reward schemes are as outmoded as our grandparents’ carriage clocks, and yet still many business owners fear that by setting up commission structures, they will be eroding their profits. The reality is the opposite. Bonuses and commission payments are not about giving money away – they are about creating a high performance culture. Effective schemes reward, motivate and challenge employees, while also generating healthy competition and building team ethos. They can help businesses control salary costs, tether valuable employees and shed those who are not performing. When well-designed, they will increase productivity along with staff morale.
At the heart of most innovative and successful reward programmes is the practice of Management by Objectives (MBO). This involves developing a set of milestones for employees, with agreed timescales and monitoring. Performance needs to be aligned to SMART principles – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timescale. Schemes also need to be fluid, allowing for the updating of objectives and stretching of bonuses for those who exceed targets.
MBO is a system that works exceptionally well with sales and business development employees, often described as ‘hunters’. But it can also be adapted for ‘farmers’ – those employees in account management and customer service who nurture long-standing client relationships. It is vital for SMEs to understand that there is no ‘one-size-fitsall’ scheme. We regularly design carefully thought through structures that incentivise employees, while minimising pitfalls. Here are some tips:
• Don’t link commission to salary. If you do, you could end up inadvertently rewarding poor performance. Commissions and bonuses recognise exceptional work an employee has done; salaries pay for the work that employees do day-to-day.
• Don’t automatically offer welcome bonuses. They can be a tool for attracting people you want, but they are a risk, because you are
paying before you have any evidence of performance. Try and build some goal-setting into any sign-on payments.
• Don’t pay attendance bonuses. These are common in manufacturing, but are often counterproductive, because once an employee has been absent for some reason, he or she has lost the incentive to maintain an attendance record. The same advice applies to blanket lateness and error targets.
• Don’t forget that by law, employees must not be penalised for taking holidays and that consideration needs to be built into any bonus and commission scheme.
• Do revise any archaic bonuses currently in your pay structure. Christmas bonuses are a nicety. Long service awards may show appreciation for loyalty, but they can encourage apathy. Start thinking about how you can replace such schemes with more targeted incentives.
• Do commission for low hanging fruit, but grade your reward scales so that you are offering increased sums for more challenging sales.
• Do stretch bonuses. If you know you can get more from your team, offer extra incentives for additional sales in a given quarter.
• Do base bonus and commission payments on client invoices paid to ensure your sales force secure client payments.
• Do consider end of contract bonuses. These can be highly persuasive in keeping someone on the team until the end of a project, and they need not cost an employer any more if the contract terms are positioned effectively.
