News

After months of preparation, planting, weeding, mowing and nurturing, this year’s Gardens and Arts from the BN5 area venues are all taking shape. Some are ‘old hands’ and popular favourites, others are new exhibitors, either way you’re sure to have a wonderful weekend getting some new ideas for your own green space. Enjoy the fun. The striking red-brick building right in the centre the village, on the corner of Cooper’s Way, is a Local Interest of very special place for many people. Members of Neighbourhood Plan the Evangelical Free Church are celebrating 185 years in Henfield, quite an achievement! One of their longest serving members, David Sayers, has kindly written a brief history of the church. It’s a Local Interest lovely, sunny and happy place, please do pop in Henfield Gardens & Arts and enjoy a coffee with them, or join in a service, you’ll be most welcome. Finally, we’d like to wish Ray Osgood a relaxing retirement from his role as Chairman of Henfield Local Interest Parish Council and also to congratulate The Evangelical Free Malcolm Eastwood on his appointment. JESSIE FISH, (1932-2017) HENFIELD ACTIVITY PLAN LAUNCHED The Henfield Activity Plan was launched at the Village Evening on the 7th March with Ann Donoghue explaining what it is all about. This started the engagement with some organisations who were present This is now being followed with a programme of interactive discussions with the many organisations that operate in our village. The first invitations to attend one of these were issued to the ‘Cluster’ which include the Adur Valley Fine Arts, Friends of Henfield Museum, Henfield Art Club, Henfield Camera Club, Henfield History Group, Henfield Lacemakers and Henfield Spinners and Weavers. If you are a committee member of one of the circa 120 organisations that operate in Henfield, please look out for our invitation letter to participate in discussions to create a supportive mechanism to our village’s residents, community, organisations, and businesses. This initiative is not intended to change the way organisations manage themselves. The aim is to encourage communication and collaboration between our organisations, maintain contact details of the organisations and identify the knowledge, skills and interests of each. We aim to be able to support organisations via the wider community, should one face challenges beyond

It was with great sadness that we heard the news that Jessie Fish died suddenly on 18th April. Jessie was very well known and respected in the village, she was Parish Council Secretary and also Verger at St Peter’s Church, Henfield for over 20 years. We send our condolences to her family, friends and to the wider St Peter’s Church family. There will be a memorial service for Jessie on Monday 5th June at St Peter’s Church, Henfield, all are welcome to attend. Emma Osman, Editor

KEEPING HENFIELD HEALTHY – A COMMUNITY BRAINSTORM In her article in the May BN5 Magazine and the recent Between Friends (Call for Ideas) Dr Karen Crawford Clarke talked of how we are doing in Chanctonbury in health terms and how we could make things better. She called for ideas on how we can bring together the numerous voluntary organisations and the general willingness of the people of Henfield to get involved to help to improve the lives of the more vulnerable in our community. As an initial step, there will be an open meeting to take these ideas forward. It will be on the evening of Thursday 15th June, 7.30pm at The Haven, following the short AGM at 7pm of the Friends of Henfield Medical Practice Trust. Potential stakeholders in the enterprise (including Henfield Community Partnership), will be invited to

JUNE 2017 | News contribute and we hope that interested practice patients and local residents will come along to add their ideas to the discussion and to the development of a Local Community Network, especially applicable to the Henfield Practice area. The Haven, with its valuable services and facilities, is a vital part of this network and it is appropriate to hold the community brainstorm on their premises. As space is limited, we need to have some indication of numbers attending, so to secure a place please telephone 01273 493172 or 01273 492772 or email jandpbates@gmail.com or ellson.ea@btinternet.com. meets the criteria of the Section 106 Agreement, an application may be made to Horsham District Council to use some of these funds. CLERK’S REPORT As part of the Planning Approval process, developers are required to pay monies to Horsham District Council or West Sussex County Council towards improvements in the local infrastructure and facilities. These arrangements are known as Section 106 Agreements. Section 106 Agreements also define what these monies should be used for. This might be very specific, (i.e. to construct a link road between Deer Park and Henfield Leisure Centre) or more broadly defined within the following categories; community centres/halls, recreational/leisure facilities, playing fields/play areas and youth activities. A few developments in the village are reaching the point where developers are now required to pay their Section 106 contributions. As a result, there are funds lodged with Horsham District Council that are available for work within the Henfield Parish. These funds are also time bound and if not used will ultimately be returned to the developer. These monies are available for the village to use, not just the Parish Council, and there may be organisations, clubs and societies within our community who would welcome financial support for a capital project. Provided that the project

News | JUNE 2017 3RD HENFIELD BROWNIES NEED YOU!

EASTER SUNDAY LUNCH

In February, our Snowy Owl took on a very important new role as County Commissioner for Sussex Central. While this is a great opportunity for her, it does mean that she will not be able to come to Brownies every week like normal. Our Tawny Owl has also had to fly away, so this will leave us very short of helpers some weeks. We don’t want to cancel meetings or reduce the amount of wonderful opportunities that we currently offer, so we do need at least one and ideally two more helpers. No previous experience of Guiding is necessary. If you can spare a couple of hours on a Tuesday, please get in touch with Natalie on 01444 230651, or register directly at www.girlguiding.org.uk. If you are too busy on a Tuesday, then still contact us, as other units are looking for help. We do also have a few spaces for girls aged 5+. You can register your daughter at www.girlguiding. org.uk. If she is not yet 5, you can still register her and she will be added to our waiting to join list. Natalie Denning

The St Peter’s Church Easter Sunday Lunch which took place at the Haven was an unqualified success. Lorette and Trish cooked a delicious meal for over 60 customers, ably assisted by a host of willing volunteers. The raffle and other fund raising activities were also very successful. This augurs well for our plans to hold a similar event on the second Sunday of every month. We are seriously considering holding a lunch on Christmas Day. If you can come and help for an hour or so you won’t regret it – the atmosphere at STEYNING YOUNG FARMERS CLUB the Easter Lunch was rather special. DOVE NURSERY NEWS Dove Nursery held an open afternoon for parents to show them what we have been learning about during the Spring term. The children were dressed up for our Charity day with the theme of ‘When I grow up’. We made £55 for our chosen charity Crackerjacks, which supports children with severe disabilities. The children gave their parents a mini concert with a variety of songs. They played African drums which they had helped to make using paper maché and painting then and the poem ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear. This was followed by a group dance which they had learnt during our dance lessons. Tea and hot cross buns were served while the children went on an Easter Egg hunt. We also had our Ofsted inspection during the Spring term. We are pleased to have been given a ‘Good’ rating. The inspector saw a range of activities and stated that “staff are very caring and spend plenty of time playing with the children in a positive way”. We are proud that our report reflects the hard work and enthusiasm that our team of staff has developed in creating a successful positive learning environment. Vivien Ruffett

Join us on Sunday 16th July and Sunday 27th August between 3-5pm at Trenchmore, Burnthouse Lane, Cowfold, RH13 8DG for an open garden party with live music, delicious tea and cakes. The tea parties are especially for people with dementia, their families and friends. These get-togethers are free and open to all dementia is an isolating disease and any help letting people know about the parties would be much appreciated. This is our 7th year of hosting garden parties, which give people new, and not so new, the chance to relax with a cup of tea, some delicious cakes and meet others in a similar situation or just sit and enjoy the music and hopefully the sunshine! A representative from the Alzheimer’s Society will be there with information about dementia services. We look forward to welcoming you. If you would like more information, please contact Joanne 07711 698 279 or 01403 864 419. Please call to confirm if the sun isn’t shining! Joanne Knowles

News | JUNE 2017 to raise over £700 for maintaining the fabric of our ancient church. In addition, we were able to pass on a cheque for over £1000 to GLISSANDO. An unusual and memorable event was experienced by all who attended and the harpists were delighted with the beautiful venue; we hope to see them again. Susan Kendall

IN PRAISE OF FIRST RESPONDERS

GLISSANDO AT ST PETER’S CHURCH, HENFIELD Eight magnificent full size harps stood imposingly in St Peter’s church on Saturday 29th April and a large audience waited full of anticipation to hear what sort of sound this octet called GLISSANDO would produce. They were not disappointed; an eclectic programme with different combinations of instruments, including a very gifted guest flautist, kept everyone fascinated especially when a Beach Boys number was announced! It was a great evening’s entertainment and The Friends of St Peter’s Church were hugely grateful to this talented group of harpists for helping them

We have all heard of HART in the village but have you heard of PART? We hadn’t until my husband had a serious accident in his workshop at our home in Henfield, while I was out. My husband dialed 999, Mike from Partridge Green, a PART first responder arrived, before I or the ambulance could get there. The speed of his arrival was so important, he was able to stop the bleeding, clean and bandage the wound and stress the seriousness to the ambulance service. He also stayed to support us until we were taken by ambulance to A&E. Like HART, members of PART are all trained volunteers who rely on public donations to fund a vital service. With so much pressure on the ambulance service these days, first responder volunteers are so important. Our grateful thanks to Mike and this wonderful service. Yvonne and Jim Young

TRAFFIC CONGESTION & SAFETY This letter is about vision. As parishioners we look to the Henfield Parish Council (HPC) to enhance our current lives, and they do a good job. Recently, with Government encouragement, they have also looked forward to our longer term future, through the medium of the Neighbourhood Plan, which regrettably was rejected. At a public meeting in 2014, concerning the 2015 plan, a question was asked of the HPC Chairman as to what assumption was made in the Plan regarding the inevitability of Henfield eventually having a bypass. The HPC chairman stated that the matter was not considered nor was there public support for a bypass. On 7 March 2017 at the Annual Parish Meeting the subject was raised again, and the Chairman stated that if the Plan is reworked, the matter should be given some consideration. Clearly, every day’s delay in seeking funds for such an inevitable quality of life improvement facility, for our children, and grandchildren, is delaying its implementation. I offer this extract from government statistics. Over the years 2013 to 2016 the total traffic miles travelled in the UK have increased by 7%, which if extrapolated over even 10 years should provide food for thought to readers and HDC alike. HENFIELD PARISH COUNCIL ELECT NEW CHAIRMAN

unnoticed in the village and local people have appreciated his approachability and his seemingly limitless energy and enthusiasm. ‘It has been a privilege to serve the village and I am very pleased to step aside and leave the role in the very capable hands of Malcolm, who has some great skills and experience to bring to the Parish Council,” said Ray. “His renewed energy, alongside the very capable and hard-working team of councillors and office staff, means the Parish Council are in a very strong position to face the challenges ahead.” Malcolm, who has been a Parish Councillor for two years working on the Lighting & Open Spaces Committee and the Cemetery Committee, has extensive experience in the financial sector and project management. There are some interesting current projects to which he can apply his expertise, including the Memorial Field, Henfield Activity Plan in conjunction with the Community Partnership, the Kingsfield link-road / car park and a new Neighbourhood Plan. Malcolm said; “I am really looking forward to building on the solid foundations already established and completing these initiatives for the village. I am very interested in improving our connections and communication within Henfield with projects such as the Henfield Activity Plan. It’s going to be a busy time for us all and I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with a group of councillors who have a broad range of skills and experience and the team in the Parish Office who work tirelessly to make Henfield a great place to live.” We would like to offer Ray our sincere thanks for his service to the village and welcome Malcolm to his new role. Emma Osman, Editor

On Tuesday 2nd May Malcolm Eastwood was elected as Chairman of Henfield Parish Council, taking over from Ray Osgood, who stood down after six years in the position. Elaine Goodyear was voted Deputy Chairman. Ray will continue to work for the village as a Parish Councillor on the Plans Advisory Committee and the Museum Committee and will be involved with the new Neighbourhood Plan. He’s served the village as a Parish Councillor for a total of thirteen years. Under Ray’s six-year leadership the Parish Council has seen some considerable changes and has worked hard to foster a strong sense of community in Henfield as well as preserving the village environment in the face of district and county budget cuts. He has overseen the Henfield Neighbourhood Plan, which was sadly quashed last year after being attacked by housing developers, to the great disappointment of the village and the volunteers who worked so hard to create it. At the Annual Parish Meeting in April local people voted to work once again on a new HENFIELD TENNIS CLUB’S Neighbourhood Plan. ANNUAL OPEN DAY Over Ray’s six-year period as Chairman he missed Please join us for Henfield Tennis Club’s annual only one of the 72 Parish Council meetings and Open Day on Saturday 3rd June at the Tennis this unpaid voluntary role has often amounted to Pavilion, everyone is welcome. There will be an over 45 hours a week. His dedication has not gone opportunity for adults and children to test out a variety of rackets, try a game or two, talk with other members, chat to one of the coaches or perhaps try out some cardio-tennis. There will also be at least one Championship Tennis Match to watch with refreshments on sale. There will also be a bouncy castle for the youngsters. Come and play for free during Wimbledon fortnight, Monday 3 July until Sunday 16 July inclusively. Contact Henfield Leisure Centre (01273 494984) to book your court and enjoy for free! WANTED! HELP TO REUNITE PRAYER BOOK WITH FAMILY

September 1938. The original owner was Nancy Harrison, married to Jim, in Bulmer, York. From other inscriptions in the book, of which there are many, alongside more little poems and thought provoking words, was a note showing that Nancy and Jim had two children, Dorothy and Ronald Donovan. Moved by the once treasured little book, Julie posted about her find on the Facebook page SilverSurfers. Since then, the story gained momentum resulting in interviews with Radio York and BBC Solent Online. With the help of her husband Graham, who is a keen amateur genealogist, Julie has researched the family but so far has not yet managed to find a close relative of Nancy or Jim. Julie would be interested to hear from you if you are the person who donated the books to the St Barnabas shop on Good Friday, if you can shed any light on how relatives of the owner may be contacted. Editor

Julie Angell, who works in the St Barnabas Charity Shop in Henfield, came across a beautiful Book of Common Prayer contained within a donation bag of books and pictures which arrived at the shop on 14th April. CHARGES FOR DIY MATERIALS On closer inspection, she realised the little leather-bound book had a touching inscription, SUSPENDED AT RECYCLING SITES accompanied by a poem on the flyleaf. It reads; Statement from Nathan Elvery, Chief Executive at “With love to Nancy on our wedding day, 14th West Sussex County Council:

TOTTINGTON WOODLANDERS 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS In celebration of 25 years looking after Tottington Woods in order to keep it in good heart for the benefit of indigenous flora and fauna (as well as the surrounding human population), we are organising a one-off Heavy Horse Logging and Woodland Crafts Day on Saturday August 19th 2017 between 11am and 4pm. Daniel Brown is bringing one of his lovely heavy horses to haul out trees that were felled during the thinning process to reduce the top canopy. Woodlouse Industries is setting up their sawmill in the wood to process the trees on site so visitors will be able to see the whole process. In addition, we will have a number of practitioners of various traditional woodland crafts demonstrating and selling their produce – pole lathe turning, hand-carving, walking stick making, hurdle making, etc. There will also be a demonstration of creating sculpture from ‘brash’ (hazel sticks and off-cuts). Sussex Wildlife Trust and the renowned wildlife photographer and expedition leader, David

Plummer will also be there. Catering outlets will be on site and we should be able to satisfy most dietary requirements using locally-sourced Sussex produce. Come along and enjoy a “traditional” day out in the beautiful Tottington Woods, locally renowned for its woodland flowers. Peter Hogan

MID SUSSEX SNOOKER & BILLIARDS CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL The Henfield Club recently hosted the Mid Sussex Snooker & Billiards League Championship Final. This was a historical event as it was the first time ever they have been asked to hold the Final. Early last year the Club’s committee approved a schedule of essential works and because of the Club’s high standing in the League, it also approved the full refurbishment of its two snooker tables and of course, its beer chillers! Their faith has so been truly rewarded. The Club does seek additional members to form new teams to play in the Mid Sussex League which runs from September to April. For more information please contact 07864 023171 or email henfieldclub15@outlook.com. The Henfield Club opened its doors to celebrate St Georges day with a BBQ and entertainment in Cagefoot Lane and will also be doing so again with its a Pumpkin Competition in the Autumn. The Henfield Club remains open to all to join and play snooker, darts, chess and cribbage as well as hold meetings or have a drink and socialise. You can also hold parties and special events at the Club and enjoy an evening playing snooker. The Henfield Club will be participating in Henfield’s Festival of Gardens and Art weekend during which the snooker tables will be decked out with wonderful Quilts made by local and visiting quilters. Artists will also display their paintings upstairs in the Don Scutt Committee room. Kenneth McIntosh

H

enfield’s newest music, food, arts and family festival - FieldFest 2017 - will kick-start your summer on Saturday 8 July at St Peter’s Primary School. Organised by the PTA and replacing the traditional school summer fete, it’s shaping up to be an exciting family event with a real summer festival vibe! The final line-up is still to be finalised but we can give you just a few of the great acts who will be performing during four hours of fantastic entertainment. The live music will kick off at 5pm with the lead singer and guitarist Brían McNamara from Brighton band Warsaw Radio who will perform some covers to get the party started. Henfield band Skimming Stones formed way back in December 2016 when five 11-year old boys (Conall Williams, Freddie Crawley, Asmus Minchell, Samual Hilton and Oliver MacKinnon) started jamming in their parent’s houses. Covering songs that they have found on dusty vinyl collections, they play an eclectic mix, from 60’s rock-n-roll to 90’s indie with a bit of 80s punk thrown in for good measure. Black Pudding are an eight-piece local funk band whose influences include Curtis Mayfield, Kool & the Gang and Stevie Wonder. They have played Henfield pubs several times and so many villagers will be familiar with their cool funk and soul covers. There is still some availability on the line-up so the organisers are keen to hear from any budding Ed Sheeran’s / Adele’s who would like to take part. As well as music, there will be plenty of other fun activities. Kids workshops will include street dance, maypole dancing, yoga, drumming and

bush craft and there will also be a bouncy castle. There will be lots of arts & crafts festival stalls such as face painting, headdress-making amongst other activities. Henfield Holistics will also be on hand offering mini head and shoulder massages. No festival would be complete without lots of delicious food and drink options and these will include street food stalls, a bar, ice cream and candy floss – more than enough to keep everyone’s appetite sated throughout the afternoon and evening! FieldFest 2017 is just one of the many fundraising events that the hard-working PTA put on throughout the year in order to raise much-needed funds for the school. And with the ongoing and well-documented issues with school funding in West Sussex, never has their work been so important. With events such as the hugely popular village bonfire night, school discos, parents quiz night, Christmas fairs and Easter fiestas, the PTA raises money to pay for a range of things from playground refurbishment and educational school trips to essential arts and crafts materials. A recent major project that they have funded is a complete refurbishment of the ICT suite (or computer room!) including new IT equipment, furniture and decoration. So come on down to St Peters School on Saturday 8 July and join in the festival fun whilst helping to support our brilliant village school! Sarah Butler

NEW HENFIELD NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Dear residents,

Following on from the Annual Parish Meeting when I spoke regarding the merits and demerits of producing a second Neighbourhood Plan and the large amount of work required and necessary funding, of those present (114), 74 voted in support of a second Plan. That level of community support was influential in helping Henfield Parish Council make the decision to produce a second Plan at the April Parish Council meeting. The reason that we feel the Plan is necessary is that we believe, going forward, it will give the local community a greater level of input into how Henfield evolves and develops over the next 15-20 years rather than leave this entirely to the Local Planning Authority (LPA), Horsham District Council. The time necessary to produce a Neighbourhood Plan based on the experience of the first Plan will be in the region of two years and as the Plan gains material strength it will help us to defend against some of the pressures that will impact on the whole of Horsham District due to the large un-met housing needs of the coastal districts. Housing numbers will be a large part of a new Plan as LPAs have been instructed to give an indication of how many homes should come forward in a Plan’s lifetime.

01273 494002

A sub-group of Council members and local residents have started the plan process, which we consider should start by revisiting the work of the six focus groups of the original Plan: Housing and Development; Environment and Countryside; Community Facilities and Infrastructure; Transport and Travel; the Local Economy; and Small Dole. Once again, we are appealing for volunteers who may have specialist knowledge of any of the topics or who feel they can help in any way. Already a number of residents have indicated their willingness to help and, should you wish to get involved, please contact the Parish Council office (01273 492507, office@henfield.gov.uk ) or me, Ray Osgood (see details below). A large and important part of a Neighbourhood Plan is the involvement of the community. If you cannot help directly then please support the presentations and meetings that will inevitably follow: your input is vital. Regular updates will be posted on the various websites, public noticeboards and through our excellent local publications. Please put your community first and support the new Henfield Neighbourhood Plan. Ray Osgood For information or to get involved please contact the Parish Council office 01273 492507, office@henfield.gov. uk or me, Ray Osgood on 01273 492499.

T

he Henfield Festival of Gardens and Arts takes place over the weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June. For these two days the village becomes a focal appointment for people who love gardening, people who appreciate the crafts people in the locality and many talented musicians who perform their work in the garden settings. Not to mention those of us who like to sit with a cup of tea and a slice of cake in a garden appreciating the hard work of others! The Festival of Gardens and Arts started as an idea to celebrate the Millennium and we are now in our eighteenth year. Over the years, the whole event has been organised by a committee made up of volunteers who spend many hours behind the scenes liaising with the venues, crafts people and musicians. The event has grown since its inception but its ethos remains the same: to celebrate the Arts in their widest sense in the wonderful garden settings and also to raise money for our local community charities though donations from the visiting public. We are generously supported from the commission given on arts and crafts sales and by sponsors, without whom we couldn’t fund the blue leaflet that guides our visitors around the village. The blue leaflet is available in many locations in Henfield as well as at some of the larger venues in the local area. We also now have a website detailing all the events and venues. The leaflet has a map to guide you, lots of information about the events, arts and places to get a cup of tea and have a sit down. Our website can be found at www.henfieldgardensandarts.net/ As well as the small gardens scattered through the village, there are larger indoor and outdoor venues around the High Street such as the Henfield Hall. We have two car parks in the centre of the village and many of the venues have street parking near to them. Henfield has many twittens between the streets which provide good routes for walkers and cyclists will enjoy our quiet streets when visiting venues. It’s impossible to highlight just one of the many gardens, venues, artists and musicians out of the leaflet and it is indeed a challenge to visit them all in one day let alone two, but from the repeat visitors that we have every year we must be doing something

right and many people have their own favourites. The event is primarily a community event but it does have a charitable side to it. The committee choose a new charity or several charities every year. Any local charity can put themselves forward for consideration and we welcome suggestions for causes to support. We don’t ask for an entrance fee to the festival but we do suggest that visitors make a donation at one or two of the venue that they visit. This year we are supporting three charities: Warren Playgroup, The Henfield Library and The Youth Club and we hope that our visitors will donate generously so that we can support these worthy causes. If you wander about the village now, you’ll notice some gardeners fervently tending to their plot. As someone who does open her garden, the work begins early in the year. There is no competition amongst the venues but there is a determination to provide a good show. As a crafts person too, I am beginning to collect a stock pile of quilts from fellow quilters for sale and exhibiting in my garden and at the Henfield Club. Fortunately, I am not a musician so I’m not busy tuning up my instrument and practising my pieces. If you fancy joining in the event look out for our publicity early next year and join in the fun. The committee also invites the local shops to have an Open Gardens theme to their window display in the week prior to the weekend. The windows are judged and we award certificates so this is something else to look out for. If you’re in the High Street over the weekend take time to have a look and see if you agree with the judge’s choice. As usual, whilst we all hope for the best weather it’s just about the only thing we can’t control. However, whatever the weather the number of indoor and outdoor venues is just too good to miss. The committee hope you will join us for the weekend of events. We start at 11am on Saturday morning and finish with a musical finale for all at Red Oaks on Sunday 11th June at 5pm where you will find many garden openers and visitors enjoying the music, food and a well-earned drink. 185 years of the HENFIELD EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCH!

T

he Henfield Evangelical Free Church, which is found at the centre of our village on Henfield High Street, will be celebrating its 185th anniversary on 6 June this year. David Sayers is the Church’s longest standing member and he has written a short history of the church, from which the following is taken.

The first references to “Hendfield” non-conformists go back to 1676 when a religious census showed there were 395 conformists, no Papists and five non-conformists. Under the Toleration Act of 1689 a licence was given to the group of non-conformists to meet for religious worship. One of the houses in which they met was 4 Red Barn Cottages (currently the home of one of our Church members). The Church building was completed in January 1832 but it was

not until 6 June 1832 that the first membership of 19 members was formed. On that first Church roll were some names still known in Henfield: Lewry, Holden, Woolgar and Gander. Mr George Hall was ordained and appointed as the first Pastor on 25 July 1832. He and his wife Elizabeth lived in the manse which was then in the front of the Church. Mr Hall continued until 1871 and there followed a succession of ministers, including a Mr Alfred Barwick who was the great, great grandfather of Alan Barwick, one of the current curators of the Henfield Museum. Music in the early days was led by a violin and a concertina played from the gallery which formed part of the original Church building. This was followed in

1881 by the use of a harmonium and then Mr J Tobitt offered his own organ on loan to the Church. At this time 12 hymn books were purchased and stamped ‘visitors’ – it would seem each member brought their own books! The decade leading up to the new century proved to be a difficult period for the Church, especially in respect of finances. So the end of the 19th century ended rather sadly and the 20th Century started in a similar way with only about 15 members and no Pastor. The Rev. Whiting and his wife arrived in 1901 and over a period of 10 years they saw the Church literally rebuilt in bricks and in people. Chapel House was demolished and the front of the new church was brought out to face the High Street. This was opened in 1905 at a cost of £620, for which the trustees obtained a grant to pay for the work. It was not until 1921 that the Church had a new manse when 2 Beulah Villas, Broomfield Road was purchased with a mortgage of £300. The Church was renovated in 1932 (its centenary year) and it’s recorded that the Church cleaner received a rise from two to three shillings (15p) a week! A mortgage fund was commenced and by 1934, with the help of some generous gifts and a loan from the Congregational Union, the mortgage was cleared.

In 1946 the Nep Town Mission (still standing next to Vinalls yard) united with the Church. They brought both active youth workers and a Sunday School of about 65 children. The Pastor at this time was a most gracious, caring man, the Rev. Rowe and he invariably ended his sermon by quoting Rev.3 v 20 “Behold I stand at the door and knock…” In 1948 the ‘church cuppa’ could be provided as both water and electricity were supplied to the Church. In 1953 Mr Charles Tobitt died after serving the Church as treasurer and organist for 55 years, only missing one service to visit his sister in hospital. The present organist has nearly reached 65 years, but with many Sundays away for holidays! In 1954 there began a period of growth when Mr Wood became lay Pastor. The youth work grew and in 1954 the Billy Graham Crusades did much to stimulate evangelistic efforts. For 10 years there were children’s missions, tent missions on the Coleman Field (now Bensons Way), visits to rallies and the showing of Christian films in the Assembly Rooms. Mr and Mrs Wood also started children’s camps, travelling with all equipment by train as far as Henley-on-Thames! We will be celebrating our 185 years on Sunday 4th June. An exhibition of the Church’s history will also be on display – everyone is very welcome.

David Sayers

Today the church, led by Pastor Andrew Lawton, is still very much at the heart of our village community and it offers a warm welcome to all ages. In addition to its Sunday morning services and evening Bible studies, the Church also has a regular ‘Coffee House’ on Friday mornings and a baby & toddler group (Chatterbox) on Tuesday mornings in the Church Hall. Many local interest groups, including the Henfield Camera Club, Henfield History Group and the Carers Support Group also meet in the Church Hall.

Bean to cup is out, vet to door is in!

O

ur coffee machine broke last week. It was terrible for me. Not because I was unable to have an espresso or latte (I’m pretty happy with instant!), but because I had to endure the look of abject fear on Annelise’s face for whom a machine coffee is the one chink of light in a morning routine dominated by the general wailings and bickerings of a 3 and a 5 year old. This was an urgent first world situation and it called for quick thinking and decisive action. I took the bull by the horns, bundled the family into the car and drove to a well known “home” store. We walked in, perused the coffee machines, selected one, purchased it, carried it to the car and it was plugged in and producing coffee within the hour. Phew! Crisis averted!. It was actually quite a liberating experience buying something like that from a shop, when in recent years we have converted to making nearly all similar purchases online. You click “pay”, check delivery details and in due course a white van turns up with your goods. The result? A huge amount of cardboard to dispose of and incredibly easy transactions! It’s the way things appear to be going with more and more products and services delivered to our doors. Delivering veterinary services to the home is not a new phenomenon, we have been providing home visits for many years. In fact, it is an obligation of the profession to be able to provide emergency first aid and pain relief to an animal - something which could require an ambulatory service in extreme circumstances. Until recently, at Hawthorn vets, we’ve generally provided visits at short notice for emergency situations for sick pets that cannot be moved or leave the house.

However, there are many other situations where a home visit is desirable. Many pets find a trip to the veterinary practice, or merely a trip in the car, very stressful. By the time these pets reach the consulting room, heart rates have raised, blood pressure has gone up, bowels and bladders have been emptied, claws are out and tempers are frayed – it’s an overall negative experience for all involved and also not a representative examination of the pet in question. Examining these patients in the comfort and security of their own environment is a far more attractive proposition. There are also many owners who would prefer home visits either because they find transporting their pet difficult, or they would prefer the convenience of a home visit. For this reason, we have recently invested in a practice vehicle for exactly this purpose - “bringing veterinary care to your home”. Additionally, in order to make the service more accessible, we are offering discounted home visits for £30 at certain times. Initially, the discounted visit service is available on Mondays and visits have to be booked before Friday 1pm the week before to allow us to plan ahead. You can choose between an afternoon or morning visit slot. We hope that this new service will be appreciated by both two and four legged clients alike! To find out more, see our website or contact us directly where one of our team will be happy to give you more information or book a visit. Please note – this is a veterinary only service, there are no plans to deliver coffee machines! Jonathan Underwood
