June 2013 and things are getting better and better, aside from none of our beaches getting Blue Flag status (pick up your litter, you peasants!), especially for the student freed by the Fire Service after a week entangled in The Clock-Tower’s art installation. Some people will do anything for a free jumper. Very soon the legendary Dancing Hands Man will be out, thus announcing the start of the summer season, then it’s all systems go. There’s certainly no shortage of events for him to get grooving at, but only one magazine that really knows what’s happening in Brighton. XAVIER RUDD

Here’s June. Brighton Festival has ended its hugely successful run, Brighton Fringe has all but wound down, and the Great Escape is no longer filling the City with Hipsters and Dream-Pop bands. (Let us never speak of BN1’s shambolic performance at TGE Music Quiz ever again) But we’ve got a look at all the madness from two different perspectives.
12 - 16 June Brighton Fashion Week returns for 2013 showcasing innovation and giving a voice to emerging design talent. Now in its fourth year the event provides a platform to a range of key designs, ideas, skills, concepts and innovative artistry, through a series of vibrant shows. On Thurs 13 Zeitgeist returns with a group of remarkable talent from emerging designers, Fri 14’s Sustain is a display of ethically minded design, ShowReel on Sat 15 offers a unique catwalk show dedicated to supporting and exposing costume design, whilst High Street on Sun 16 showcases the accessibility of fashion in popular culture. www.brightonfashionweek.com
Staying on Music we’re looking at a brand new Brighton Pop festival SD2, from the team behind Shakedown, so you won’t want to miss our competition to WIN tickets (Page 8). We also grab a chat with multi-instrumentalist surf dude Xavier Rudd ahead of his show at Concorde2. We’ll also take a good look at The Eco Technology Show, just before it shows us the way at The Brighton Centre this month. As usual we’ll be giving it to you straight, with all the regular previews of the best Comedy, Theatre and Music this fabulous City has to offer.

Good luck to any of you that are participating in the largest charity Bike event in Europe, the legendary London to Brighton Bike Ride on Sat 16, or running in Hove Park’s Big Fun Run on Sat 29 June. Just remember that sunscreen.
The Komedia gives us some more festival treats, for those of you that still can’t get enough, with a special season of Edinburgh Comedy previews throughout June and July, many of which will be charging the recession-busting admission price of just five quid! SUSSEX FESTIVAL OF MUSIC
Sunday 9 June Starts at Preston Park, ventures around town and ends at Seafront

Once again it’s time to get on your bike and show the City some flesh, because it’s the Brighton Naked Bike Ride on Sun 9 June. Now celebrating its eight year, this rolling protest takes to the streets of Brighton to highlight body-powered transport as an answer to the problems of car-dominated public spaces, air pollution, climate change and conflict over diminishing oil resources. Up to a thousand streaking granny-shocking cyclists are expected to pedal through the heart of the city, in conjunction with over 50 other protests travelling through cities around the world. Last year saw the second largest increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide ever recorded, with levels now at 394 parts per million, compared to less than 320ppm in 1960. Emissions are continuing to accelerate, possibly pushing the planet toward an irreversible catastrophic situation.
The Sussex Festival of Music brings together all strands of music. The centre piece on Saturday evening is a “Last Night of the Proms” with plenty of flag waving and fireworks. For the Jazz enthusiast there is a chance to eat fine food and listen to the best of Jazz whether at the dinner on Friday evening or the Brunch on Sunday Morning. For Sunday afternoon brings together all tastes. Light classical, dance music, folk and jazz mix easily together for 6 hours of fun. For the kids, there are even circus acts to learn such as tightrope walking – See back cover for details

New Brighton & Hove Council website Brighton and Hove City Council’s website is an important resource for the city, enabling residents to pay parking fines, interact with social services and ask: “Why is my rubbish still not being collected?” Now the site is undergoing a huge revamp to make this contact point clearer and more concise for its 140,000 visitors per month, promising to make the site easier to navigate and providing access to many more council services online. www.brighton-hove.gov.uk

A really interesting band out of the US who mix no wave and indie pop to great effect. They have been around for a while now and have garnered healthy respect from the media and built up a fairly large constitution of fans and admirers.

Oh what a show this promises to be. With the delectable ladies from Japan presenting us with their great surf-influenced rock’n’roll headlining and local garage nutters King Salami and MFC Chicken in support it promises to be some night. Throw in all the usual delights that the Stay Sick crew offer up and this promises to be one of the real highlights of the month.

Continuing on the theme of bands who influenced Nirvana who are coming to town this month they don’t get any bigger or better than these great gods of grunge who gave them their first ever show. Mudhoney are simply one of the best live bands I have ever witnessed and the power and fun haven’t yet subsided to the point where I don’t want to go and see them. Just as vital and thrilling as they were all the way back on their first visit to these shores in 1988.
Simply put these guys are one of the best garage-trashpunk bands from the UK ever. When they first burst on to the scene in the mid-1990’s they immediately caught the attention of any one who was interested in ferocious rock’n’roll and where it was going. Arguably about as close these islands have ever come to producing a band as notable as the New Bomb Turks.

Brighton psych-pop stalwarts The Electric Soft Parade make a welcome return from a lengthy hiatus, with a show at The Green Door Store on Mon 17 Jun. They’ve taken some time out recently, but who can resist the lure of the chorus pedal? A celebratory mood will abound, as sparkly new album Idiots is released on the same day. It’ll be a return to form if current single, You Must Walk Your Path Alone, is anything to go by.
John Lydon is a musical visionary who has been doing this for longer than most of us have been alive and PIL are simply one of the greatest bands our country has ever produced. After he quit the Pistols in early 1978 he joined forces with a new band and took off. They produced some of the finest, most original work of their generation and you know with Mr Lydon running the show just about anything will happen.

SD2 FESTIVAL It’s all happening down in Stanmer Park this September! The team behind the Downs-shaking Dance Festival - Shakedown (geddit?!) have just announced they’re bringing some of the UK’s biggest Pop acts down to the seaside.

The chart-smashing The Wanted, pop princesses The Saturdays and some local superstar called Connor Maynard, are just three of the massive names appearing at brand new one-day festival: SD2, when it livens up Stamner Park on Sun 29 Sept. With more acts being announced very soon (we can’t tell you here – but they are amazing), SD2 is shaping up to be a great day out for all ages, right here in Brighton. Ever growing, evolving and adapting to music trends, SD2’s older sister - Shakedown has just announced the addition of a third stage, a brand new House arena hosted by those trendsetters at Audio, to Stanmer Park on Sat 28 Sept. Annie Mac, Kerri Chandler, Toddla T, MK and Hot Since 82 will be supplying the very best house and future bass to an appreciative crowd. Other artists to keep an eye out for over the 11 hours of music in this historic parkland include: Brighton rapscallions Rizzle Kicks, Labrinth, DJ Fresh’s utterly incredible FreshLive show and Maverick Sabre will be getting all charged up on the Main Stage. Whilst over in the Supercharged Arena, Drum and Bass innovator Sub Focus, Radio 1 stalwart Zane Lowe, Breaks legend Krafty Kuts and the ultimate party-starter A-Skillz are just a few of the acts packing them in through the day. THE BRIGHTON MUSIC AWARDS JUNE 28 The Brighton Music Awards - Was there ever a place more deserving of its own phonographic ceremony than Brighton? From gifted teenage upstarts and students honing an industry-ready craft to ageing rockers who’ve toured the globe, it’s fair to say few towns offer more in terms of musical multiplicity, personality and quality than this fair seaside town. We think it would be remiss of a place that demands so much of the music world’s attention not to take the time to look inward and celebrate itself, and the ‘Brights’ - founded by music producer and songwriter David Courtney - do exactly that. On June 28th awards for 8 categories, from ‘Best Video’ to ‘Best Venue’, will be handed out to the individuals and groups that make Brighton’s scene what it is, and you can join us at The Latest Music Bar for the party! There’ll be no lack of entertainment as acceptance speeches aside there are live performances from local favourites including; The Dead Reds, Kovak, Jacko Hooper, Fragile Creatures, Kenelis & Tom Stanniford, and an after party extending the celebrations until the early morning.

XAVIER RUDD Australian surf/roots musician Xavier Rudd’s works are akin to an amazing musical journey. His inspirational and entrancing folk songs feature layers of guitar, lapsteel, stompbox, vocals and didgeridoo and numerous percussive instruments, all performed simultaneously by Mr Rudd alone, complimented by his breezy vocals drifting over the hypnotic tribal rhythms. On Sat 22 Jun he appears, with Yeshe Kx, for another mesmerising show at Concorde 2, as part of his near ceaseless touring, so we got in touch with him in Down-Under-Mate to find out more about this fascinating musician.
Where does your connection to nature stem from? Grew up in the bush on the coast of Australia and spent nearly all of my time in it, indigenous roots on my father’s side too.
Does Australia have a thriving native music scene, or is it still very much a niche genre? I wouldn’t say thriving, more underground but there’s some great music if you seek it.
What music did you listen to growing up? Leo Kottke, The Doors, Bob Marley and the Wailors, Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Nirvana, Archers of loaf, Jimi Hendrix and plenty more
What kind of preparation do you put into song writing? Do you seek out traditional musicians to acquire new techniques and abilities? I just let it flow there’s no real prep, I don’t seek musicians if someone comes along that feels right then I go with it and see.
Were you precocious as a child? I have a vision of you playing lots of different instruments and excelling at everything… I was shy and my music was my own little intimate thing with myself if I came across an instrument I taught myself to play it.
If you weren’t into music, would you be an environmental campaigner, or is there another passion you’d like to explore? Hard to say but yeah I’d be standing up for country and oceans no matter what!

Have you ever considered getting into politics? The Australian Greens have gathered a lot of momentum since their inception. No thanks What advice can you give someone to make the world better in one simple step? (No pressure. LOL…) Remember each day we are not just on this earth we are OF this earth and give thanks each day and nurture that energetic connection between human and earth that will translate naturally into positive physical change. So, how do you remain serene and centred amidst the chaos of a large tour? What coping strategies have you developed? Yoga, eating well, reading people and being able to duck and weave when necessary.
What’s the last thing that you made you proud? My son’s basketball game How easy is it to learn to surf? Will you teach me? It’s cold and there’s not much swell in Brighton, but there’s no sharks at least… individual journey I thing, yep I can teach ya but not in England… too cold! BN 1 DOES: THE GREAT ESCAPE FESTIVAL

LL TOM ODE GARY MARLOWE’S EXPERIENCE: Everybody’s Great Escape is different. With almost 400 artists playing across three days, it can only be that way. Pretty much every venue capable of hosting a band and an audience was being used and despite shooting live music all over the city, I ended up in three I’d never been to before. On Thursday I was at The Warren a pop-up venue behind the Brighton Centre to see Tom Odell, who was playing two gigs that night. He gave a confident, if somewhat short performance and went down well with the crowd. One of this year’s most eagerly anticipated acts, Deap Vally, were up next. The guitar and drums duo from California duly made a big noise, pulled some amazing faces and delivered bags of attitude. Musically, however, I’m not convinced they’re worthy of the hype being heaped upon them. Friday afternoon saw me at Audio for Kodaline. Having impressed me when I saw them a few months ago, they didn’t disappoint. Half a dozen songs was far too short, but they made up for the lack of quantity with a stirring performance. Next were The Orwells, a young band from Chicago, so young they’re only just out of high school. Sounding like a cross between The Strokes and The Vaccines, they put on a intense and energetic show that gave every indication we’ll be hearing much more from them in the future. Then it was back to The Warren for what promised to be the bill of the festival. Again the queues testified to that. Kodaline gave a repeat performance of their earlier gig at Audio and were equally as good. Up next was Nina Nesbitt. The young Scot has been causing quite a stir lately and is clearly on the fast track for success. She showed lots of confidence for an 18-year-old.
But the name on everyone’s lips was Iggy Azalea, a 22-yearold Australian hip hopper. Ms Azalea proved quite a performer and you can be sure she’s a big star in the making. There was one more gig for me on Friday night, well Saturday morning actually. In The Valley Below are from California and one of my favourite new bands. They were playing at 12:30 to an almost empty Brighthelm Centre. The band were clearly deflated playing to so few people. A broken guitar strap didn’t help and they abruptly finished their set angry and frustrated. Saturday began The Midnight Beast who packed out the Corn Exchange. I have to admit, I’d never even heard of them. Having seen them, I have no idea what their attraction is, but clearly they have huge appeal among young girls, three I spoke to had travelled all the way from Devon that morning just to see them! The evening was frankly disappointing. The Paganini Ballroom sadly proved a terrible place to watch music. There’s no doubt The 1975 are a cut above, but poorly lit and playing in a room more suited to a wedding reception than a rock concert, just wasn’t right for them...or for me. So that was my Great Escape. Lots of hits and a one or two misses. Sadly the sun didn’t come out to play for most of the three days and the absence of secret street gigs was a real shame. Even so, I have a feeling it will go down as the best Great Escape so far.

BRAD MIDDLETON’S EXPERIENCE: This year’s festival was probably the best I have been fortunate to attend. Thursday saw the BN1 team take up residence at the Blind Tiger for some great garage trash in the shape of FINDLAY and some great rockin’ indie-pop in the shape of YOUNG RIVAL before moving off to the Green Door Store with the idea of seeing BEACH FOSSILS but alas they had finished so we got to stand in a packed venue with the barely audible sound of MAC DEMARCO happening in the distance. I soon gave up and decided to have a wander around to see what else was happening and I’m glad I did as walking through The Lanes I saw a poster for a small intimate show by CHARLIE BOYER & THE VOYEURS in the space below Belushi’s. It’s clear to see why they are a name on the up. Great Velvet Underground tinged pop darkness. Friday saw the pace intensify as I started early at the Hope for MUST who bought back memories of seeing a young Manic Street Preachers but with a bit more musicality whilst COUSINS at the Blind Tiger were just great, a proper two-piece rock’n’roll machine. Friday night was all about the show at the Dome Studio put on by Uncut. CHARLIE BOYER again was good and looked really comfortable on the bigger stage but the real highlight for me were the fantastic ALLAH-LA’S. Some great pop music steeped in their Californian heritage, they were the undoubted highlight of my weekend so much so that I didn’t bother venturing out of my flat on the Saturday until it was time for the frenzied return of local legends EIGHTIES MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER. It was a fitting way to end the festivities.

No stranger to any of you familiar with the Comedy scene, or anyone that’s seen a TV panel show more than twice, his provocative and sardonic routines have been baiting tabloids and thrilling audiences for several years now. In this new show he’s taking a closer look at his own failings, with perhaps a mentioning of the perceived outrage he caused at the PFA’s Player of the Year Awards, where he made little attempt to tone down his views on racism. It’s refreshing to have such an outspoken and free with obscenities talent in these days of political correctness, particularly as most of what he says rings true, but don’t think he’s ever going to attempt to justify what he says. Tiffany Stevenson comes to the Komedia on Wed 12 Jun in a special preview of her Edinburgh show: Optimist Primed. Dividing her time between acting and standup, she was runner up on ITV’s Show Me The Funny and had a small role in some little-known show called The Office. Constantly striving against the celebrity-obsessed culture we live in and the effects it has upon this country’s women, she presents a thoughtful and straight-talking dismantling of the heat/Hello! generation. She’s more than capable of being coarse, and possibly too cynical, at points. But in a world full of uncouth rabble-rousing male comedians there’s no compulsion for her to act like a lady. With exceptional pacing and an ability to connect with the misgivings and self-doubts that ‘women of a certain age’ experience, her elegantly witty diatribes against the ridiculous world we’ve inadvertently created will soon be propelling her to bigger things very soon.

Already working alongside a number of other eco vehicle manufacturers attending The Eco Technology Show, Ian will also highlight the unique relationships within the car industry in pioneering new technologies as he explains: “As car manufacturers this is an extremely exciting time in exploring new vehicle technologies and, while we are all in competition, together there is a lot of close collaboration with regard to exploring electric vehicle opportunities within the industry. A HUMAN, NOT AN ANIMAL: THE ELEPHANT MAN By Wayne Imms
“I am not an animal! I am a human being!” These are the frustrated words exclaimed by Joseph Merrick, known as The Elephant Man, in one of the film’s memorable scenes as he is cornered by a crowd at London’s Liverpool Street station. This month at Duke’s at Komedia will see a rare big-screen showing of The Elephant Man, one of my favourite films. This special screening will be followed by an onstage interview of local filmmaker Jonathan Glendening with production designer Stuart Craig and Simon Treves, great-great nephew of surgeon Sir Frederick Treves, played in the film by Anthony Hopkins. Directed by David Lynch and, surprisingly to some, produced by Mel Brooks, The Elephant Man was released in 1980 to much acclaim, and rightly so. The black and white film received eight Oscar nominations, despite winning none, and seven BAFTA nominations, winning three of the prestigious awards. I really would like people to see this film, especially those who have yet to see it, and not just because it’s my event. It would be particularly great to see on the big screen. The Elephant Man tells the tale of Joseph Merrick, named John in the film for some reason, a heavily deformed young man. Taking place in Victorian London he is looked after and befriended by amicable surgeon Frederick Treves of the London Hospital, after being discovered by him as a freak show exhibit at a circus. We soon find out that he is especially intelligent and articulate, despite a severe problem with his speech. The highly moving film becomes even more so as we see The Elephant Man treated as the human being that he truly is. The film looks magnificent, due to the production design; we see realistic depictions of the Victorian era, big heavy moving machinery within the bowels of the hospital and in other locations. The sound design and effects add to the mood very well, enhancing the overall impression and occasional tension. It is clearly a very moving and beautiful film because of its high production value, as well as its musical score. David Lynch’s classic is a superb encapsulation
of the human spirit, kindness and beauty, as well as tragedy. This special film has some great performances, particularly from John Hurt in the lead role who is unrecognisable under Christopher Tucker’s superb makeup. The impressive cast, as well as Anthony Hopkins, also includes John Gielgud, Anne Bancroft, Michael Elphick and Dexter Fletcher in one of his first film roles. Stuart Craig, one of the screening’s guest interviewees, is highly regarded as a production designer. Stuart was Oscar nominated for The Elephant Man and he won a BAFTA for the film. His credits also include every Harry Potter film, Superman, A Bridge Too Far, The English Patient, Gandhi, Notting Hill and Shadowlands. He is bound to give us an interesting perspective into playing a key part in creating the superb and atmospheric look of The Elephant Man. I had a nice little chat on the phone with him the other day – we’re both looking forward to seeing it on the big screen; it’ll be a first for me. Stuart couldn’t recall when he last saw the film as it was so long ago. He told me that he spent time with the great John Hurt a couple of weeks ago at the Norwich University of the Arts – the actor is its first chancellor. I certainly look forward to meeting Stuart, as I do the other guest, Simon Treves. Simon is the great-great nephew of surgeon Frederick Treves. As an actor he has performed in many of Britain’s leading theatres. Simon has worked with Hopkins three times. His television credits include Jeeves and Wooster, Red Dwarf and Lynda La Plante’s Above Suspicion. He has acted in over 100 radio drama productions for the BBC. There’s something quite magical in the air tonight at Komedia. As I watch the growing populace, smiles and chatter fill the room with anticipation. It’s always noticeable at BIMM gigs. Partly because a large proportion of the audience are also on the bill but mainly because we’re about to see 25 different acts all of whom we know can play. BIMM may have a stigma for churning out presentable pouting pop robots but this really isn’t the case at Live and Lyrical. As long as you ignore all the Adele wannabes and the annoying amount of pseudo-emotive piano intros variety really is the spice of the night with each act being a pleasant surprise from the last. For example tonight’s roster includes (among many others): An 80’s pop opener from Fickle Friends, a blues rock storm from Crooked Highway, the bluegrass inspired Jamie Knox, and a soul singalong from Elektra and The Daddy Funkers. The pace of the gig is athletic with each performer grabbing the baton as final notes linger in the air. It’s obvious that talent is dripping from the walls here but it’s surprisingly easy to see which diamonds shine brightest: On a bill that favours larger outfits there is, all of a sudden, a girl stood centre stage with an acoustic
guitar, beside her only a cellist. Hushed by the drop in volume, the audience becomes enticed by this minimal arrangement and we are invited to drift along a haunting and beautiful melody from Rachel Wilson. www.facebook.com/rachelwilsonmusic Will Mavin seems to have the ability to sing the softest, most heart rendering ballad while simultaneously filling the room with more volume than most of the bands. Mavin possesses a soulful quality to his melody reminding us of American artists such as Ray Lamontagne and Iron and wine, definitely one to look out for. www.reverbnation.com/willmavin The only way to describe Aaron Biggins is indie skiffle. Two acoustic guitars, bass and drums with harmonies so relentless and uplifting I’m sure this is the band we’ve been waiting for all night! Returning to Brighton and Hove, as part of Brighton Fringe, NoFit State had the hard task of following the enormous successes of Tabu in 2009 and Barricade in 2012. But with their latest show Bianco they managed to find new heights. For those unfamiliar with their trademark intimate promenade-style of circus experience, it sees a range of astonishing performances; the feats of skill, strength and discipline, taking place across a constantly evolving set that surrounds their spellbound audience. Centred around an infinitely customisable two-storey climbing frame, the performers of this award-winning circus have produced an exquisite show. Swinging from wash-day antics that mutate into a tightrope act and endless imaginative variations of aerial skills, to implausible juggling feats and gravity-defying balancing tricks, all pushed a little further than you’ll have seen before. Skilfully manipulating the audience’s mood through subtle, but effective, use of music and light, the evening induces the state of wonderment you felt as a child when the circus came to town, but without a captive wild beast or creepy auguste in sight. Just when you think you finally understand the themes or story amidst this chaos, they throw a beautifully crafted curve-ball at you, displacing any sense of what may lie ahead. Don’t try to second-guess them, the only thing wilder than the raucous and roving performers is the level of imagination that goes into staging a spectacle of this magnitude.
Although it’d be tough to pick out one stand-out routine from this eclectic electrifying show, there is one piece everyone will leave the big top discussing… the phenomenal ending to the night. It’s guaranteed you won’t see a more soul-rending or heart stopping finale to a show this year. You don’t see anything this magnificent, or elegant, every day. Having travelled to the USA many times and with close friends in Houston, Texas, who regularly took them to the best “pits” it was only a matter of time before husband and wife, Charlie and Gemma Langridge became wholly addicted to American low-and-slow BBQ. Unlike your typical lighter-fluid infused bangers and burger offering that you’d expect at a typical “quick the sun’s out” British BBQ, American BBQ is all cooking large cuts of meats, such as beef brisket or pork shoulder for hours at a low temperature over indirect heat until you’re left with tender, smoky, meaty goodness. Thanks to websites such as The British BBQ society (www.bbbqs.com), it wasn’t long before they took the plunge and entered their first competition as Team Smokin’ Penguin (the name’s a long story, but involves fancy dress, a wedding and a confused bride and groom!). At a comp all the teams start at the same time (usually Saturday morning) with the same cuts of meat – pork shoulder, pork ribs, beef brisket and chicken – and using their own combination of rubs, injections, woods and smokers have to cook food for 6 judges to blind-judge in a standard presentation box at a set time. “The best bit about the competition scene is the social side and the BBQ family. From our first competition where we forgot our tent pole and knew nothing, everyone was there to help out and we were hooked – there’s no bad vibes at comps. We’ve become such good friends with the teams we party with them out of season and even got invited to join one team at the BBQ world championships at the Jack Daniel’s distillery last year!” Team Smokin’ Penguin have done well so far – last year

they got quite a few “walks” (the bbq term for walking up to receive a trophy), including a 2nd place in ribs at Paddle Round the Pier in Brighton and a 1st in desert at the European championships. In 2013 they’re already off to a storming start, with 4 competitions already under their belt in Surrey, Bristol, Leicester and Holland. They’ve already won 1st place in Pork at Grillstock – King of the Q and 1st place in One Pot Wonder (a chef’s choice round where it has to be cooked in one pot on a smoker) There’s no stopping them with competitions lined up at Brands Hatch 8th-9th July and in Tongham, Surrey 11th-12 July amongst others. With the possibility of catering, pop-ups and BBQ classes in the future, and the guarantee that they’ll defiantly be at as many comps as they can, there’s no stopping them. DUMB WAITER A while ago, my friend Kirstie suggested that I, being quite a café connoisseur, should embark on a quest to establish what should be granted the honour of Brighton’s best breakfast. Before long, we fry-up fans took up what was a highly enjoyable challenge. So, my breakfast buddy and I selected a few of the city’s leading cafes, before having the pleasure of visiting them on various mornings in the month of May. Do bear in mind that this article reflects my own personal view and preferences.
CAFÉ MOTU Trafalgar Street
We went for number one, the biggest from the blackboard of six appealing variations. This consists of two each of bacon, sausage, egg, hash browns, as well as a helping of beans, half a fried tomato and toast. The very hot coffee, which was separate, was faultless, just the right strength, strong with a bit of a kick. It was actually very difficult to fault the morning feast upon the plate; a delight! The café itself felt cosy in its feel and appearance. The walls were filled with large black and white photos of 60s and 70s pop stars, such as The Beatles, Bowie and The Who. The service was very swift and friendly, although it wasn’t busy at our visit. Back to the breakfast itself, then; good hot beans, sitting in the plate’s centre, and all the food was at a good temperature. The eggs were excellent, really tasty and thick, with very soft slightly runny yolks. Truly succulent sausages they were, which I happily dipped into the egg juice, along with the hash browns, which I felt were perfectly cooked. Everything was so well cooked and at £5.50 it was really reasonable value. However, to be strict, the tomato could have been slightly softer and a coffee included in the cost would have been the icing on the cake. Ultimately, Café Motu is well worth a visit.

Two chunky dark brown sausages, beans, two well cooked tomato slices, an egg upon fried bread, two dark and crispy bacon slices, black pudding and mushrooms adorned the plate, along with lots of fried potatoes, accompanied by a filter coffee. I had a good idea of what to expect at this café, as it’s been a bit of a regular breakfast haunt of mine for many years now. This visit was absolutely no disappointment. There was no question of the sausages being particularly tasty and succulent. Superb were the bacon rashers and with crispy rinds. I did expect the fried potatoes to be chunkier, although they were lovely and a highly welcome element to what was a great morning meal. Although it was fairly pricey, it was value for money and hard to fault.
REDELI Ship Street
It was a pleasant surprise to see the cost of this one; at just £4.65, it was a real bargain. Like Billie’s, this was the only café that I’d never stepped into before and I’m glad I did. Refreshingly, we were asked how we wanted our egg, hard or a runny yolk, and bacon, crispy or not. A decent filter coffee washed down a sausage, egg, beans, toast and two bacon slices. There were lots of beans and a thick, long Cumberland sausage, which was sure rather nice. I would have preferred the bacon rind to have been crispier, although it was a good, tasty rasher. The egg was actually rather too crispy underneath, but the yolk’s runniness was just right. If you find yourself in town with just a fiver and you fancy a good cooked breakfast, you can’t really go wrong with this well-priced one. All in all, it was a very satisfying meal. And it’s a bright and friendly deli, which makes you feel most welcome. CONTINUED...

Costing £4.80, it consisted of tea or coffee, bacon, egg, sausage, beans, tomato, breaded butter and fried slices. Belchers would be seen as a greasy spoon, although it’s sure a rather exceptional one.
This is clearly a popular place with a nice warm atmosphere. It was very busy upon our arrival, full of people in groups devouring their breakfasts. Their rather famous All Day Jumbo Meat Breakfast, at £6.75, was well presented and there was lots of it. It consisted of a seasoned egg, lots of beans, four slices of toast, two tomato slices, two large bacon slices, two plump big sausages and lots of button mushrooms.
It was good value, especially that a drink was included, although the coffee wasn’t of a particularly high quality. The whole meal was well presented and the service was superb, swift and friendly. The bacon and the egg were its highlights; really, really tasty egg with a soft yolk; I felt it was faultless, runny enough to dip the soft white bread into it. I liked the sausage, although it sure wasn’t the tastiest we encountered on our quest. Certainly nice bacon, however I would have liked it cooked more round the edges. This is a proper little café, overall offering good value.

It was the Bigger Breakfast that filled our plates at this delightful cosy café. At £6.95, the content was two bacon slices, sausage, egg, beans, mushrooms, a potato latke and toast, accompanied by a fine filter coffee. The highlights were the beans; lots of them, soft, hot and tasty; the bacon was somewhat smaller than other rashes in other cafes, but excellent with the right amount of crispiness. The sausage was enjoyable; nice, plump and wellcooked. It looked lovely too. The whole meal was very well presented. The mushrooms were certainly tasty, as was the egg, which had a particularly runny yolk, a good thing, in my view. I enjoyed soaking up the yolk with the splendid local toasted bread. Ideally, though, perhaps a drink could have been included. Despite the rather costly price, all the ingredients were proudly locally sourced. This makes a difference to me and to many of Seven Bees’ regular customers.
The delightful deli is just five minutes from my home in the heart of the Kemp Town village. Despite being quite a stroll for many, it’s well worth it. At £6, the plate was filled with two sausages, bacon slices, a fried egg, mushrooms, beans, tomatoes and two granary toast slices. The bacon was superb; especially tasty and well done, rather crispy on the edges. The particular highlight for us was the sausages, which were locally sourced. The herb-flavoured meaty delights were super, as were the mushrooms; cooked well and just how I like them. Lovely and soft was the egg, as was the tomato. On a somewhat downside, the beans were quite lacking in heat. Generally, this was a more than decent traditional breakfast, which was certainly filling. I actually felt very disappointed after devouring this delight, as, although there was a lot on my plate, I could have eaten more due to it all being so delicious, especially the sausage and bacon. Good friendly service was an enhancement to the experience.

KENSINGTON’S Kensington Gardens The Winner! In my view, it’s Brighton’s Best Breakfast.
The Big Meat was our chosen morning meal from their rather vast breakfast menu. Big was certainly an appropriate word and at £6.95 it was real value for money. The Big Meat comes with a filter coffee and four pieces of toasted nice granary bread. I had a good strong latte, which came at a reasonable 50p extra. The plate’s whole contents were superbly presented; mushrooms, two bacon slices, seasoned eggs, plump Cumberland sausages, a crispy hash brown and two halves of tomatoes. The bacon was great; really well cooked, dark and quite crispy. The sausages were certainly succulent and chunky. The tasty and thin eggs were seasoned, while the mushrooms, which were small, were enhanced with parsley and garlicflavoured butter. On a less positive note, I would have welcomed it all to have generally been hotter, particularly the tomatoes, and to have had a few more of the mushrooms, although they were really tasty. However, at least up to this point, it was the tastiest breakfast that I have had in a long time. It was good to know that the ingredients were fresh and locally sourced. The new chef, who’s also the manager, loves his food, and the fresher, the better. This wins as it’s the most imaginative, due to the seasoning, the presentation and the amount of really tasty food. Kensington’s had recently been taken over by a passionate and dedicated new manager and chef, and his input makes a difference to the whole café. T E E R T S DINER Brighton is one of the top foodie destinations in the UK according to, well, me. We’re pretty spoilt for choice - it seems barely a month goes by without a new restaurant or café popping up. The street food revolution in London has been well established for a few years and seemed to explode last year, so it was only a matter of time before it hit our pebbled shores. At least, that’s what I hoped… Cue Street Diner, the brain child (food baby?) of Christina and Kate. Old friends who share a passion for street food, they’ve set up a weekly market in the Brighthelm Centre Gardens, smack bang in the middle of town. Note the pun. Ahem. Working with regular and (largely) local traders as well as the occasional guest spot, the focus is on food miles, sustainability, job creation and discovery. What can one discover there, I hear you ask? Well thus far I’ve sampled the delights of The Troll’s Pantry, Dead Good Burrito, Little Blue Smokehouse and Yum Yum Ninja, but there are many more enticing aromas I’ve yet to work my way around. It’s a great way to try out food before committing to a meal at a restaurant and a chance to check out some innovative sole traders. You can also expect some live music over the next few weeks, and Christina and Kate eventually hope to open up another spot to showcase even more local talent. What started out as an idea for the summer months has already been extended to “forever onwards” so I’ve every faith they’ll achieve it, and they truly deserve to. With visi-
