LATEST NEWS A So, Glastonbury is done and dusted for another year, with dust being the key word... t last the sun shone all weekend and there wasn’t a wellie or a puddle in sight. As always, the music was top notch and the festival celebrated its 40th birthday in style. In 1970 the first ever festival was held on the day after Jimi Hendrix died and 1,500 punters were treated to the likes of Marc Bolan and Al Stewart. Tickets cost £1 and included free milk from the farm. It’s come a long way since then, and Michael Eavis must be a very proud man. Speaking of pride, Brighton Pride hits our sunny city again this month, kicking off on Saturday 31st July for a whole week. One of its many highlights is the Carnival Parade on Saturday the 8th, with this year’s theme being Pride and (No) Prejudice. The parade sets off from Madeira Drive and arrives at Preston Park at around 1pm. Entrance to the park is free, but expect to be asked to make a donation. Time to glam up and get involved in doing what Brighton folk do best! Not really up for parading, but still want to show off? Well if you fancy yourself as a bit of a musician and want to show everyone just how good you are, go along to the Latest Music bar on Manchester Street on August 1st for Bark Like A Dog Blues Jam night. You can join another band for a song or two, or bring your own band, and get on stage and do exactly that. Admission is free and it all kicks off at 8pm. Go to www.barkslikeadog.co.uk to get a preview of the playlist.

Seeing as this seems to be the month for dressing up, you could dig out your finest clothes and silliest hat and go along to the three day August Festival at the Brighton Racecourse. The festival starts on the 4th August, with Ladies Day on the 5th. Prizes for Best Dressed Lady, Best Dressed Man and Best Hat. It’s surprising what you can do with a paper plate, a Pritt stick and some sequins, believe me. Sticking with the theme, there’s another chance to look frankly ridiculous this August, if you get yourself to the Sussex County Cricket Ground on August 13th for Moonlight Movie Night. At 8.30 you can watch Grease under the starry sky dressed in character (again prizes for best costume) and sing along to Summer Loving. Bring a blanket and a picnic. The hot sunny month of August rolls to a happy conclusion with a big fat Bank Holiday at the end of it. As
always, the city will be flooded with Vespas and Lambrettas for the traditional Mod’s weekend, so don your parker and your Fred Perry and get on your bike! One other quick mention is the Playgroup Festival taking place during 13th - 15th August at a top secret location. This is an invite only festival and even the line-up is being kept secret! But don’t fret the team have put together a fleet of eco-friendly buses to take you on your magical bus tour. Now there are only 1000 invites up for grabs so check them out on their facebook page, tickets rumoured to be starting at £45 for early bird tickets then creeping up to £59 then £69. BN1 Magazine tips this to be a dark horse in the festival stakes and a possible future favourite. For reviews and dates for all the other great events going on in and around Brighton this month, keep reading!

Al Murray: 11 August at Komedia
28th August – An Audience With Julian Clary – Theatre Royal Comedy or Theatre? Where to put this one. Sadly we don’t have a cabaret section here at BN1 but this will probably cross any number of boundaries, including likely the one labelled “good taste”. But then of course, Brighton and good taste have never been the easiest bedfellows, so get your bawdy natures out and enjoy one of the original camp crew. Julian will also be signing copies of his new book Devil In Disguise on the night.

Mouse can scare these hungry animals away with tall stories of the terrifying Gruffalo, but what happens when he comes face to face with the very creature he imagined.....sounds rather like a heavy night out on the seafront to me.....The award winning picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler was recently voted the nation’s number one bedtime story by BBC Radio 2 listeners and this magical, musical stage adaptation promises the perfect summer holiday treat. LAURA VEIRS &THE HALL OF FLAMES
Komedia - 15th August Some alternative rock to stroll through the summer to will be gracing Brighton’s music fans at Komedia this month. Laura Veirs and the Hall of Flames will be rounding off their tour of the UK with their third last performance this side of the Atlantic, and it should be an act worth watching. Veirs’ sound, a clean folk rock with shades of synthesizer and organ to push it into the progressive or alternative bracket, should suite the acoustically brilliant and well proportioned Komedia venue. Sharp guitars and folk compositions tend to thrive in the intimate comedy club, with acts such as Johnny Flynn recently putting on brilliant performances. Tickets are getting snapped up so get on it! Brighton’s folk fans should strap in and remain seated until the interval this August at Komedia. Those smart enough to snap up tickets will be treated to a harmonic, mystical and haunting show of folk rock. The Providence based and aptly named quartet The Low Anthem will be playing at Brighton’s premier mid-level venue Komedia on the 25th. Expect heavenly acoustic compositions tied in with stunning harmonica work and on occasion, when the mood takes them, darker, dirtier and anthem like wailing vocals littered with blues lines. The group headed by Ben Knox Miller should put on a top performance. AG Doors @ 20:00. Ticket information available at www.myspace.com/lowanthem

Zombie Nation LED Festival Day 1
OFF WITHTHEIR HEADS
The Engine Room – 26th August The Engine Room just seems to ooze that rock and roll feeling. Its outer wall is a dank front door porch, (need I say more?) but its what is on the inside that counts. Its rabbit hutch of drinking rooms coupled with its live music venue will be playing host to punk infused hard rockers Off With Their Heads towards the end of August. For anyone who is unfamiliar they sound quite simply like Rancid. They have successfully harnessed that upbeat yet hard edged punk/pop sound that gets us all hopping, moshing and skanking, despite the occasionally cheesy moment in the lyrics. If you like the adrenaline, the sweat, the beer on you rather than in you and the lack of bog roll in the facilities then get down there on the 26th for some shameless fun! AG Doors @ 20:00. Ticket information available at www.engineroomclub.com
UGLY DUCKLING
21st Aug: Concorde2 Hailing from long beach California, Ugly Duckling, so named because members Dizzy Dustin, Young Einstein and Andy Cat felt like outcasts from the Southern Californian scene of the mid nineties, stylistically they hark back to the happy hip-hop popular in the nineteen eighties and the early nineties relying, both live and in the studio, on sampling and heavy scratch turntablism. Ugly Duckling are also renowned not just for lampooning the excesses of modern hip hop and its obsession with material wealth and sex but also for their live shows where they make very effort to get the crowd involved in their performance. IG Doors open 19:00, Ages 14+, Tickets 12.50 in advance + booking fee
ATTHE EDGE OFTHE SEA 28th August: Concorde2
At The Edge of The Sea is a one day indoor music event curated by Leeds based, long-time indie rockers, The Wedding Present who are celebrating the 21st anniversary of the release of their classic major label debut, ‘Bizzaro’ an album which relies on a three chord structure and which they will play live in its entirety. Although the bands music has evolved over the years they draw obvious influences from The Fall, The Buzzcocks and Gang of Four. Also playing will be The Ukrainians, Klee, Persil, Sharks, Darren Hayman, Terry De Castro, Paul Dorrington, Cinerama and The half Sisters. IG Doors Open 15:00, Ages 14+, Tickets £18:00 in advance + booking fee
RUMBLE ONTHE BEACH
29th August: Concorde2 Rumble on the Beach is Brighton’s essential Rockabilly and Jive all dayer. Aside from an Elvis convention you’re probably not going to see so many quiffs in one place all at the same time! Fantastic. Seeing that many quiffs is always a treat but if you need a real reason to go there will be a BBQ all day for all you hungry hot rods and you can twist your ass off because performing live will be Fat 45, Jack Rabbit Slim, Jailbait and Bad Bad Whiskey. DJ David Mumbles and DJ Lucky Phil will be slamming vinyl the old way. No scratching or mixing here just classic tunes. Hair gel and leather jackets at the ready because you will be rocking till 10:00 pm at the latest. Fetch me my comb. IG
ALTERNATIVE NOTTING HILL ALL DAYER
30th August: Concorde2 Sunshine, Music, Jamaican Food, Rum Punch and a probably a cheeky spliff on the beach. Does anyone really need more reasons to get out over the weekend in Brighton or what? Well, with face painting and fancy dress a must, this could be a good one to take the kids to if you’re a little bit liberal but not quite enlightened enough to take your three your old out on pride to see hairy leather clad gimps wearing what look like painfully large strap ons. If the prospect of joining in a conga on Brighton beech doesn’t tempt you then perhaps Mean Poppa Lean, Samsara, Satta, The Unity Hi Fi Crew, DJ hot Tip Hi Fi or Puncture Kit can stir you from what be a lonely soulless existence. Also you’ll be happy to know that you are far less likely to be mugged, shot or arrested for a joints worth at this event than you are at the actual Notting Hill Carnival. IG Event Starts 15:00, Ages 14+, FREE!!!
Doors Open 15:00, Ages 14+, Tickets £7.50 in advance + booking fee

MAMMOTHFEST The First Southern UK Metal Festival arrives in Brighton & Hove!
T
he first thing that Steve from Mammothfest said to me was “Please don’t make this about me – there are a load of us involved...” and he’s right, there are, and only half of them could make the photoshoot... In order to create Mammothfest - The south coast’s first ever Hard Rock/ Metal festival – loads of people have come together; event promoters, band members, and interested fans, to put together the biggest and widest ranging Rock & Metal event the area’s ever seen. It’s not as if it’s a one day only thing either – in the run up to the main event they have held “Battle of The Bands” nights over the last eight months, whittling down almost 50 entries to the ones who’ve won a place on the bill. That
8
alone takes dedication, organisation and massive commitment; it’s not something you’d ever do for the money - unless you liked losing it that is. What drives the Mammothfest team is the desire to see the music they love showcased properly for once, in a day long festival format (including loads of stalls!) that gives rock fans an opportunity to experience a really wide range of Hard Rock / Metal and it’s multitude of subgenres for an extremely affordable price. There’s also the longer term vision of making Mammothfest an annual event that grows in scope and scale; these guys have big, big plans, and having met them I’m convinced they’re quite capable of making them happen. As people they’re a shed load of fun – but they’re deadly serious about making this work. For this year’s debut event they’ve secured some amazing bands, with Swedish “death
& roll” legends ENTOMBED heading the bill, alongside UK stoner rock giants ORANGE GOBLIN and Gibraltar’s unique BREED 77 – all headliners in their own right. But it’s far from being just about the big names - there are literally dozens of (so far) smaller and up and coming bands playing as well, and an underlying commitment to giving hard working local bands a chance to shine; all proving that Mammothfest is fuelled by a genuine love for the music and the people involved in it. Hard rock and metal fans are often a target of mockery; if you want to mock the Mammothfest gang, you’d better have put your life on hold for a year, and put everything you have at risk in order to create a massive and unique event for the music you love; because that’s exactly what they have done. I have nothing but admiration for Steve and the team –
I’d never be brave enough to do what they’ve done. Finally, you might be thinking Mammothfest isn’t for you, but if there’s even the tiniest bit of a rocker in you somewhere you simply can’t miss it. Something this special and this local deserves your support – and after all, it’s going to be a year before you’ll get the chance again! BEST COAST
B
Debut Album Crazy For You Released: 2nd August On Wichita Recordings ubblegum Dreampop with East and West Coast sensibilities. So, which is the Best Coast? The opener “Boyfriend” has all the hallmarks of the modus operandi for this band. Bethany Cosentino sings her version of the grand tradition of male longing lyrics over boyfriend Bobb Bruno’s Teenage Fanclubesque (Everything flows) fuzzy guitars and west coast harmonies abound. “I wish he was my boyfriend. I’d love him to the very end.” Sung with gusto and vocals as sweet and true as Neko Case. But there is something of the east coast in there too. The Shangri-Las and Ramones spring to mind and not just because of the teenage dating subject matter. The tunes are there! “This straightforward but relatable perspective is showcased in a sound that blends 1950s girl group sincerity, 1960s California pop optimism and 1990s grunge doom. It’s totally dreamy.” Reminiscent of Joy Zipper, Galaxie 500 and early Mazzy Star (I’m thinking “Give You My Lovin’ off “She Hangs Brightly”). “I think I’m really nostalgic for my teenage years. I never want to grow up. I think most people my age feel that way sometimes,” says the 23-yearold Cosentino. “These songs are pretty innocent. I just complain about boys. That’s so high school.”Bethany lists the key influences of Best Coast as: boys, California, weed and her cat, Snacks. “Our Deal” is surely greater than the sum of its parts. It’s like a modern day paean to Today! Era Beach Boys, specifically “Don’t Worry Baby” from the previous year complete with the Wilson influenced falsetto most

notable in the outro. And Carl’s surf guitar is there too. Here’s hoping that their relationship lasts many more summers! Watch the video for When I’m With You http://vimeo.com/10170845 By Paul Carrington-Gretton
SKY LARKIN
K
Album: Kaleide Released: 9th August On Wichita Recordings aleide is the forthcoming release from Sky Larkin, a three piece band from Leeds. Signed to the infamous Wichita Recordings, they consist of Nestor Matthews on drums, Doug Adams on bass and Katie Harkin on guitar and vocals. Harkin and Larkin. No prizes for guessing how they settled on the band name then. The album begins with a definite air of ‘arty-indie’ about it, and
with the recent plethora of aforementioned genre coming from both the UK and US markets this northern outfit have a lot of competition to outshine. The tone is set instantly with the clever, heavy metaphor of the album’s opening lyrics “There’s potential...like still windmills” hence to say that Sky Larkin’s second full-length release does definitely need a few listens to really kick into action. Once you’re there though it really does start to shine and the best example of this is the standout track ‘Tiny Heist’. With a beautifully poetic and almost folk-like opening single guitar, it opens out into a crescendo of looping drums and distinctly catchy guitar hooks reminding me somewhat of a stripped down version of an Arcade Fire song. Upon reflection a very solid, easy-to-listen to album. Maybe not quite enough to rival the art-rock of Metric, nor eccentrically dark enough to rival Bat For Lashes but it’s certainly worth a purchase nonetheless. By Oli Lyons

o, a few apres work drinks, we are all pumped up and ready to battle it out on the mic (vocally challenged we are not) at least we think so. Walking up to Lucky Voice, it looks quite exclusive with the ropes outside, and as we walk in, the reception is rather grand. A very lovely lady shows us downstairs to the bar while we wait for the others to arrive, the bar/lounge is very plush, it could be mistaken for a private members bar! The lighting is dark and the mood sombre, wouldn’t be out of place in soho. We were shown to our own room and had a brief overview of how to work the equipment. We dive instantly into the dressing up box, which has a variety of hilarious wigs, although feel it’s missing a guitar or 2. Music selection is brilliant and the karaoke machine is easy to work, whenever we need refreshment we hit the button on the wall and a lovely member of staff would appear at the door in seconds. Left to our own devices we were rockin up the place, had a fantastic time. Drinks were quite pricey, but service was probably worth it. The toilets were clean and dare I say it really nice. Overall thoroughly impressed, would be a great place for hen do’s, work do’s, birthday do’s, in fact any do’s! I’m thinking of creating an excuse just to go back!

ROCK&ROLLER New Restaurant/pool bar brings a welcome change to western road offering a first class American pool and dinning service that is well overdue.
O
ur eager reporter headed down to the launch night with chalk at the ready to check out the American inspired menu and have a bash on one of the classy pool tables. Oh, how we love Brighton! How can we want for anything? With the pub, club and food choices that confirm our south coast indecisiveness on a daily basis, is there anything that our favourite city has yet to deliver? As a striving pool shark, it’s been apparent for absolutely ages that Brighton needs more pool tables, and that pubs with pool tables usually fit into one of two categories-either nasty or non-existent. So, what’s a girl to do if she wants to shoot some pool in this city? Fortunately, you need look no further than Rock & Roller on Western Road. Phew! Located opposite Waitrose, this place shrieks ‘cool’ before you’ve even rolled through the door. With its sleek, black exterior and equally smart surroundings as you enter the restaurant and bar, the atmosphere is buzzy,
14
friendly and relaxed. Offering a massive choice of beers, wines and cocktails, and an excellent ‘Americaninspired’ menu, this is the perfect place to start, or end your night in style. Venturing upstairs can only be described as ‘Pool Paradise’, with five brand spanking new tables, and additional lavish surroundings. The tables are thoughtfully spaced out with ample room to play, and the attentive waitress service ensures an interruption-free game. What more can you ask for? It seems the brains behind Rock & Roller have cracked it, offering a venue that well and truly rocks. By Beki Turner For your chance to win dinner for two at Brighton’s only restaurant/pool bar, all you have to do is answer this question: when is American Independence Day? A. 4th July B. 5th November C. 25th December Answers to: win@bn1magazine.co.uk Please put Rock & Roller in the header, also leave your name, number and address. GOOD LUCK! *This prize includes two courses (either starter and main course or main course and dessert) plus a bottle of house wine. Rock & Roller, 95 Western Road, Brighton
OKI-NAMI
O
ki-Nami is a great restaurant, and something of a Brighton and Hove fixture, having been around for 15 years or so, during in which time they’ve perfected the art of high quality but inexpensive Japanese dining - though I’d forgive you for not knowing, as they were originally semi-hidden in deepest darkest Hove. Their move from everyone’s favourite restaurant that you selfishly didn’t want too many more people to know about, to stylish addition to Brighton town centre is comparatively recent - but if anything they’ve got more stylish, and even better value. The restaurant is simply but classily decorated, with clever modern Japanese touches, and its high ceilings and mostly white decor makes for a nice airy feel that’s perfect for the current mini-heatwave; given our weather I should probably say that it looks just as lovely in the rain. There’s a large and equally airy section to the rear which can be used for private parties. On our visit we went for the Bento boxes, with rice - just one of the great value lunch specials, supplemented by vegetable dumplings (gyoza) and soy beans (edamame) ; the latter have to be one of the best beer snacks around should you be looking... and the food was simply excellent. The gyoza were perfectly spiced and cooked, and beautifully presented on a gorgeous blue dish. I noted that Oki Nami use some excellent tableware, and on asking, I discovered much of it is also available to buy if you are particularly taken with it, which you might well be. The edamame were simply served - perfectly cooked with a scattering of rock salt - which is just how they should be.
Review by Nick Titchener
The Bento boxes provide a great sampler of Oki Nami’s food, as they come with a central dish - in our cases one chicken, one tofu - rice with Japanese pickle, a selection of sushi and a citrus dressed salad. Plus - in case you were extra hungry - miso soup. The tofu was tasty, fresh and very enjoyable - it’s a food item that is often bland and almost tasteless, but Oki-Nami know how to make it special. The chicken was succulent and tender with a delicious sauce that almost defined “more-ish”. The vegetarian sushi was perfect, with pickled gourd, mushroom and cucumber centres, with the chicken bento coming with a more traditional fish selection that was also faultless. We initially drank a traditional Japanese soft drink, that comes with an ingenious marble bottle stopper, and if you can work out how to remove it, you can keep it (no you’re not getting any clues). After that I switched to lager - of which there’s a good selection - and my friend went for a chilled plum wine, which was sweet but fresh, not at all cloying, and a great choice Oki Nami have an extensive lunch and evening menu and have pioneered the idea of ”Japanese Tapas” if you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice, or want to try as many dishes as you can. They also do take away meals, and student specials, both on food in the restaurant and on selected drinks in their first floor wine bar. I’m told they are planning to provide summer lunch boxes to take away - which seems like an excellent idea to me. One final thing; the music in the restaurant was very different - fresh and exciting without being intrusive, and I don’t think I heard more than one song I knew. I asked about it on the way out. “Oh, that’s down to our partner” I was told “You might know him - he’s called Norman.......”

T
he Tony Hawk & Friends sell-out European Tour came to a spectacular end on Wednesday 21st July, and what better way to end it than on our very own doorstep, Brighton Beach! Thousands of ecstatic spectators crowded onto the beach adjacent to the west pier to marvel the pure skill and utter lunacy of some the worlds’ top skateboarding riders. First to take to the ramps were the UK vert members exhibiting an impressive array of tricks giving the crowd a taste of what’s to come. Then Tony Hawk emerged to an elated crowd followed by, legends in their own right, Jesse Fritsch, Kevin Staab, Sandro Dias and Neil Hendrix. And what a performance! Putting on the longest show of the tour, Tony went on to land an awesome 720° and 540° Ollie, Then finished with him and Sandro Dias performing a ridiculous 540° together, on the biggest portable ramp in the UK!
16photosbydave.org
After Tony had thrown his rather sweaty elbow pads into the crowd the stage was set for Maximo Park who played out as the sun set. Rather too long for my liking, Maximo Park just didn’t gain enough ‘velocity’ and sounded a tad tired. Then it was time for the aftershow party at Madame Geishas! The place swiftly filled with excited fans and eager photo opportunists. I cunningly managed to blag my way into the VIP area and found myself sipping champagne with Kevin Staab and tony Hawk. One of the hazards of alcohol is the amnesia effect it sometimes has on me and I have no recollection what we talked about. Thank god for cameras and the ability to jog my memory on inspection! Overall it felt a bit corporate, as one big media pr campaign, but it was worth it to see the sublime performances and amazing aptitude witnessed by a sell-out crowd. YEASAYER REVIEW I magine if say, the Klaxons had moved to circa 1968 India, indulged in substances exclusively recommended by George Harrison and the like and returned home with a sound so bizarre and yet sing-along that it sat comfortably between underground cult obscurity and Radio 1/2 airplay. If you can envisage that, then you may be ready for Brooklyn’s greatest new psychedelic pioneers Yeasayer. On tonight’s evidence, Yeasayer could yet prove to be one of the more sustainable candidates in the MGMT fronted “experimentalworld music” indie sub-genre. The band do sound immense tonight, their massed synths conjure up hippyish visions of the pre-digital 70s and 80s, although their rhythms are infinitely more rave-oriented and their vocals a tad more forthcoming. The suitably resplendent vivid neon lights, seemingly shining as much into
18
the audiences eyes as they do onto the band, creating an air of shrine-like wonder as they float through extended versions of songs from this year’s ‘Odd Blood’ record. The voices of main singer Chris Keating, singing guitarist Anand Wilder and singing bassist Ira Wolf Tuton merge to elevate you to a rather unusual celestial state in which you are left questioning your sanity...in the best possible way. With pounding drums reverberating from the back of the stage and spooky yet beautiful harmonies resonating from the front, Yeasayer manage to create a very powerful and refreshingly new live sound. If you ever do get a chance to see them live though, you may be tempted to check backstage for any covert choirboys. Eccentrically mellifluous fun to say the least, like being gently slapped in the face by a Buddhist monk, with a hand made of lemon sorbet. You should try it. By Oli Lyons
PADDLE ROUND THE PIER B
ack in the Summer of ‘96, Paddle Round the Pier founder Dave Samuel skateboarded up and down the seafront in a sandwich board using a loud hailer to publicise his new event. The initial concept was to bring local surfers together for a social shindig while raising funds for charity, and over a decade later, the festival has blossomed into not just one of the south coast’s Summer highlights, but an internationally recognised success. Last month, over 40,000 locals and visitors hit Hove Lawns to check out the multitude of exhibitors, extreme sports demos and some of
Brighton’s finest musical talent. The incessant sunshine meant that for many, lounging in the heat with a beer was the optimum option. For those who were feeling lively, there was the opportunity to try out different sports and to watch demos like the awesome Animal Relentless Bike Tour Display. Keeping the crowd jumping in the big-top were local bands Wide Eyed Order with their folk-tastic stomping melodies and festival favourites Los Albertos. A massive £35,000 was raised for The Royal National Lifeboat Institute, SurfAid International and Whoopsadaisy. By Beki Turner

T
he LONDON ELECTRONIC DANCE Festival is one of the biggest and most anticipated dance events London has ever seen! The August bank holiday rave weekender at Victoria Park will transform into Planet Turbo Arena, playing host to some of the most prestige electronic dance acts and DJ’s including David Guetta, Leftfield, Soulwax, Calvin Harris and special guest electronic techno pioneer Aphex Twin! Expect the Planet Turbo Arena to put on a staggering show of lasers, visual effects and themed stage production!! SUMMER FESTIVAL WEEK: 31ST JULY – 8TH AUG 2010 PRIDE PARADE & PARK EVENT SAT 7TH AUGUST 2010:
I
t’s no secret that there has been a fair bit of controversy surrounding this year’s Pride, but rather than go over all the ups and downs, we think it’s best to simply celebrate the highlight of Brighton’s Summer calendar, the UK’s best free party - and the biggest free Pride event in Europe – and the people who are making it happen. Pride is, once again, being put together with massive support from local companies, and the bars and tents are being run from within the LGBT community; so it’s still very much Brighton Pride. It’s a been far from easy ride for anyone, but with Revenge stepping up to provide the bars and several of the tents – including THE BRIGHTON DANCE TENT – and local institutions Vavoom Bar, The Star Inn, The Camelford Arms, Queens Arms, The Zone and Buddies also lending their full support, this year’s Pride is shaping up to be one of the best. Brighton Council obviously agrees, because they’re also fully behind it. There are some interesting innovations, such as THE CO-OPERATIVE on-site shop; THE BIG SCREEN rerunning highlights from the Parade, and live feeds from cameras in the Park, and the first appearance of an official LGBT

STUDENT BAR, from which bars contractor Club Revenge will be donating all profits to Pride and local University LGBT societies (LGBrighTon & University of Sussex LGBTQ) equally; so, students, you can drink there knowing each pint is helping some great causes. That’s no excuse for overdoing it , of course, though you might be able to make a case for feeling proud of your hangover... This year THE BRIGHTON DANCE TENT is operating an over 18 only policy, so make sure to bring ID if you want to enjoy headliners The Freemasons - Brighton born and bred superstars making their first ever appearance at Brighton Pride, after rocking Sydney Mardi Gras, London and New York Pride - and Steve Pitron alongside the cream of local DJ talent. There’s a suggested donation of £5 for entry this year. Not compulsory, but well worth it... especially as we’re promised dancers, spectacular production and loads of exciting extras. No idea what they are, but they’re bound to be special! Other tents are the GIRLS ON TOP WOMENS DANCE TENT with the very best of Brighton’s girl DJs alongside a few London beauties (that’s not sexist – it came from the press release!), THE WOMEN’S PERFORMANCE TENT, in support of Brighton Women’s Centre, and showcasing everything from folk to punk to rock – and
PRIDE AND (NO) PREJUDICE 2010
even some ukuleles... ; THE VAVOOM BAR back in the heart of the Park; THE CALABASH SPECTACULAR TENT supported by Spectrum LGBT Community Forum and celebrating cultural diversity within the LGBT community, with ragga, bhangra, breakbeats, hip-hop, reggae, drum’n’bass, RnB, dancehall, funk, soul, old-school gems and disco delights; enlarged for this year and another “must visit”; THE QUEENS ARMS AND THE ZONE CABARET TENT, described brilliantly as “A virtual non-stop parade of wigs lacquered to within an inch of their lives” and always an absolute scream; THE REVENGE POP TENT – with the best in pop and alternative (including local legend Boogaloo
There’s a suggested donation of £5 for entry this year. Not compulsory, but well worth it... especially as we’re promised dancers, spectacular production and loads of exciting extras. No idea what they are, but they’re bound to be special!
Stu) ; THE FAMILY CIRCUS TENT & RAINBOW FAMILIES CRECHE with circus themed activities and face painting for children and a crèche between 12 -4 (limited places – book in advance!) and, should your day take a turn for the worse for whatever reason, THE SAFE SPACE TENT, with support workers from Sussex Central YMCA and Brighton & Hove LGBT Switchboard on hand to help. And then there’s the Pink Punters Community Forum, The Youth Area, Multi Faith Blessings, The Community Market, the Adult Market and – naturally – The Fun Fair – plus a few things we’re bound to have missed (sorry!) With all this activity a great day for all is guaranteed, whatever the weather. We could all do without last year’s monumental downpour, but if one does arrive at least it won’t be so much of a surprise.... Finally - it costs over £250,000 to run Pride. All the DJs, acts and helpers give their time for free, so the least you can do is put your hand in your pockets and donate some cash, and you can also help by only buying drinks from authorised vendors –there’ll be some wandering through the crowds this year too! Be proud of Pride – and give everyone involved your support. And a standing ovation..... By Nick Titchener
