Brighton During Pride Promenade with Rose Collis The Great Escape, check. Brighton Festival Fringe, check. Fashion Week, check. Beer Festival, check – from what I can remember… Oh Brighton, how we love thee. From top attractions to seaside antics, we wave goodbye to a jovial June and July but welcome in sunny August with even more show stopping events. This month, we’ll be painting the city pink and waving our rainbow flags high once again in the countdown to Pride 2011. Step up and out in the city with dance, drama, music, comedy and cabaret every single night in the week run up to Pride Weekend on the 13th. Expect sequins, expect hot pants, PVC and fluorescent body paint…expect fabulous. Don’t you just love it here! If all that glitz and glam wasn’t enough, at the Brighton Dome this month we have favourite folk sons Fleet Foxes performing on the 16th, whilst cabaret at the Komedia sees Alive & Swinging with Marilyn Monroe. Sink your teeth into her three piece tribute act as she woos the crowd alongside Frank Sinatra and Las Vegas legend Elvis Presley. Swing those hips, pucker those lips and tap those blue suede shoes. In the words of Marilyn herself, “If you can make a girl laugh, you can make her do anything!” On that note, roll up, roll up! The circus is coming to town! With acrobatics and death defying stunts, sit back as Zippo Circus gets your heart racing and leaves you believing the unbelievable. You’re best leaving it to the professionals however, if you’re a thrill-seeker yourself, the biggest balls in Brighton are back for the summer season. At Devil’s Dyke, be taken to the extreme as you tear down the longest Orb run in Europe strapped into a giant inflatable ball at speeds of up to 30mph. For the more daring or aquatic amongst you, try the Aqua Orb. Filled with water it promises to be a soaking good time as you scream and gargle your way to the bottom. Born and bred in the city, I like to think of myself as a true supporter of all things Brightonian; and that includes football. After winning League One last year, Brighton and Hove Albion have just been promoted to the Championship. Come on Seagulls! Kicking off at Brighton’s long-awaited American Express Community Stadium, their first game against Doncaster Rovers will take place on the 6th. Since the Albion hasn’t had a home for 13 years, everyone’s got football fever and I know I’ll be squawking for the Seagulls when we win. Boy is this month going to be busy! By Deborah Fairfield

The New Untouchables Present... Brighton Modernist And 60S Weekender August Bank Holiday Weekend 26/27/28 In celebration of all things definitively 60s and hence desperately cool (re. Mopeds, bowl haircuts, polo-neck and blazer combos, mini skirts, rock n’ roll, hippies and Mick Jagger) Brighton will play host to a
weekend of MOD themed shenanigans. There could not be a more apt city than Brighton to host an event of such retro-obsessed self-indulgent fun. After all, the seaside haven was the setting for MODs and rockers arming themselves with deck chairs and rearranging each others parts on a massive scale. Consequently, two of Brighton’s premiere music venues, Komedia and Volks, will host a mix of day and night events across the three days. Guest DJs include Rhys and Joe from The Horrors, Dave Crozier and Niamh Lynch just to name a few. Tickets will undoubtedly fly, this being Brighton and it being the bank holiday, so get your pennies together! Live Music During August Wedding Present
Live Music By Brad Middleton Washed Out Haunt 10th Aug
Ernest Greene is one cool dude, trust me! Coming from rural Georgia he has subsequently wowed audiences across the States and has just signed for Sub Pop records which is so freakin’ massive I needn’t go into a history lesson of all they’ve done. Washed Out are a cool, chilled-out indie hip-hop vehicle with moments of sublime Stereolab vibes, My Bloody Valentine like vocals and big lolloping drum patterns of Scremadelica-era Primal Scream. The new album came out three weeks ago so expect to hear lots of epic loveliness which dominates Within and Without.

of special guests including Badly Drawn Boy and Gedge’s perennial side-project Cinerama. The Wedding Present formed in 1985 and coupled with their fantastic debut release George Best and the split of The Smiths they became widely popular very quickly. Darlings of the indie-reading masses of the NME, Melody Maker and Sounds and loved by John Peel and legendary producer/Big Black/Shellac front man Steve Albini they scored a huge number of entries on to Peel’s annual festive fifty chart and also appeared to bewilder the nation on Top of the Pops.

These guys have been around for ever and have done pretty much everything it means for them to be considered music legends. Huge number of former members? Yes, drummer who died of a heroin overdose in 1974? Yes and Number 1 album in the States? Yes. AWB formed in Dundee in Scot-
land way back in 1971 and have released a huge number of albums and have played across the world for the last 22 years since they reformed after a seven year break at the start of the 1980s. Expect blue-eyed soul, funk and pop influences and expect it to be good.. twenty-two years is a long time!
CSS
Digital 21st Aug Indie-rave outfit who it seems have fluffed their lines on their way to the top. When they formed in 2003 they were immediately signed up by the ubiquitous Sub Pop and with their hip sound great things were predicted. Somewhere down the line since then though things have maybe gone wrong and the world-conquering CSS just hasn’t happened. Loved by fashionistas and art students tonight’s show should be a throbbing mess of fake glasses, tight pants and plenty of bright colours!

The Eels Fresh from their appearance at Glastonbury, Eels slipped into Brighton to play an almost sold out show at the Dome. Like their namesake, this is a band that can be hard to get to grips with. Mark Oliver Everett’s angst-ridden songs can be depressing, yet they are often also optimistic. There is no doubting his ability to turn a phrase or his vocal prowess, and
10

being a big fan of the band’s last three records we were keen to see what they were like live. Whilst there were no frills, there were plenty of beards on display. Pretty much all seven band members sported ZZ Topstyle facial hair and shades, but apart from wearing suits and ties there was no theatrics and almost no lighting . It was left to the
songs to speak for themselves and with a 15 year back catalogue, they came thick and fast during an almost two hour set. Known as ‘E’, these days Mark Oliver Everett looks more like a chasidic rabbi than a rock musician.. Despite the lack of conversation, he connected with an appreciative audience who clearly had come to see real musicians

play real songs, songs that often were filled with visceral heartache, reflecting the traumas E has had in his life. His growling voice, at times sounding as rough as sandpaper, together with his ability as a storyteller, gave his songs an emotional honesty often missing in other songwriters. He was helped by surrounding himself with ex-

ceptional musicians who played with real feeling, whether on brooding quiet numbers such as ‘I Like The Way This Is Going” or all out blues rockers like ‘Prizefighter’ Notoriously diffident, E rarely gives interviews and often refuses to allow photographers at his gigs. This time, we got lucky as we were the only ones allowed to
shoot the show. At the end of an evening, where the audience demanded no less than three encores, Eels proved that, whilst they maybe an acquired taste, they have a flavour of all their own. All we can say is try and catch them the next time they’re in town! Images and words by Gary Marlowe

Out Of The Ordinary This year’s Out Of The Ordinary festival is back next month to party in honour of the elements and offers the chance to see out the festie season with a rich mix of entertainment in an eco friendly environment.
With everything from music to art, cabaret, workshops and more, OOtO takes place over three days during the autumn equinox in the Sussex countryside, just off Hailsham, between Brighton and Eastbourne. OOtO prides itself as a “carbon neutral event” with a family based, educational and chilled out feel. With a firm nod towards protecting the planet and conserving energy, the entire festival is powered by wind, sun and vegetable oil, not forgetting “people and love powered” and you are encouraged to travel there by the now (almost) world famous Big
Lemon Bus. Live music comes by way of a string of home grown talent and a selection of well established festival favourites who’ll grace OOtO’s Euphoria Bar, a setting well known for its warmth, intimacy and intensity. Among the top acts listed for this year’s event are veterans of dance based rhythms and psychedelic ambience System 7. Zubzub, the creation of Ozric Tentacles bassist, Zia Geelani. with an intoxicating batch from the world of reggae, dub and roots music. From Sussex shores, the up and coming disco darlings, Transformer, will set out to prove why they’re causing such fervour in the music press. Gypsy folksters Rory Mulligan and The Imaginary Band appear on the bill and, with a personal nod from this journo, the sinfully entertaining Boycom, whom I stumbled upon with jaw-dropping merriment at Brighton’s Latest Music Bar earlier this year. A full list of all the artists appearing can be found on the festival website. Within this unique festival four separate areas, each based upon the planet’s elements, pro-
vide events evenly balanced according to each zone. The Water Arena will play host to readings and workshops, with lessons in yoga and a choice of alternative therapy techniques in the Healing Area, or just head for the lake, or even the sauna! In the Earth Arena you’ll find talks on subjects like astronomy, science, spirituality and seminars on how to reduce your own carbon footprint. Here you can take the kids to engage in games and activities and there’s even the opportunity to enter the young-uns into a specially arranged performance on stage. The Fire Arena, of course, lays claim to the cabaret, comedy and circus shenanigans where you
can discover your own ability to join the freak show with the CircusScene workshops or sit back and have your senses spun by the Conscious Cabaret, whilst the Air Arena is where you’ll find the Euphoria Bar and the live music there in. Out Of The Ordinary runs from 23 – 25 September and a three day pass will cost you £55. Healthy, affordable food is offered on site and quality entertainment is guaranteed. Those who have a little bit left in the festival tank come autumn and take the trip to OOtO can be certain of an inspirational and enlightening experience your body, mind and spirit will never forget. MAN RAY SKY EP: ‘Vessels’ Out On 8th August Out of the ‘Hook Up’ stable, this Brighton 5 piece successfully merge haunting, direct melodies with atmospheric electronica to impressive effect. Although they perhaps wear some of their influences on their sleeve, the band nonetheless possess their own signature sound, achieving the remarkable trick of being both dissonant and beautifully melodic all at the same time - no mean feat that! With low-fi vocals deep in the mix, ambient guitar washes and imaginative use of electronica and reverb to the fore, Man Ray Sky develop pleasing sonic landscapes that are fresh and current whilst nodding respectfully at 60’s psychedelia, 80’s electro and 90’s introversion without sounding either dated or overly derivative. The tracks on this EP are pleasingly short - no self indulgence here - and, all in all, this outfit tick all the right boxes. Whilst in keeping with every other wanna-be band you care to mention, that huge breakthrough tune may still be in the making, but In the sea of sameness and cliché that constitutes much of today’s overloaded music industry, Man Ray Sky truly offer something new and interesting. This EP promises to be a foretaste of a debut CD which, on this evidence, will be well worth checking out. By Mark Ede
MATT FINUCANE Album: ‘This Mucky Age’ Out Now As someone old enough to remember pre Hunky Dory David Bowie, I find myself welcoming the musical style of Matt Finucane like an old friend. This is a world I kind of know - or feel familiar with at least - even though I confess that
www.bn1magazine.co.uk
lyrically, I have no idea what Mr Finucane is rabbitting on about. Not that it matters overmuch, Matt seems able to paint a picture, tell a story and connect through mere suggestions and musical atmosphere. This man is clearly a devil may care rebel. Here is a man in a world of his own. And quite a nice place it is too. A cult world of space rock, some strange mutant form of angry philosophy and pleasingly thin fuzzy guitar sounds. The b-side ‘180 degree reaction’ is strangely satisfying, as indeed is the more musically direct ‘Hands Up’. All very mysterious it may be, but I like it. In fact I like it a lot. Mr Finucane you are a musical outcast, a pirate and a bit of a rascal and these are, in my book at least, all very good things indeed. Music needs you; keep the faith and more power to your tortured brow! By Mark Ede
SAMUEL J Album: Colourful Vibration’s Out On 5th August With the English summer changing moods more frequently than a particularly angsty teenager, we sometimes need a bit of good music to chill in the turmoil. The music of Samuel J, like that of other similar artists, is multifunctionary; as a hugely talented singer songwriter, playing keys, drums, and guitar, his music can do whatever you want it to, whether that be to help you relax in the “sun” or not. Now based in Brighton Samuel J’s music is being very well received both inside the area and all over the UK. This year he has had the opportunity to perform at various well-known festivals and venues like The Greenman, The Big Chill, and Secret Garden. He current has a monthly residency at The Bees mouth and The Basement. Samuel J’s music leaves an impression; both in your ears and in your heart. Some of the songs
are quite long, but that’s a good thing; you hear them long after the disc has stopped turning. By Andrew Nicholls
JIM STAPLEY LIVE Album: Out Now Keith Richards describes learning to play the blues in fruitful detail in his autobiography. What stands out is the realisation that to emulate his heroes through bluesy rock n’ roll, he has to have had ‘some shit’ happen to him first. Rolling Stones records beamed with feeling, incident and a kind of Jeremy Clarksonesque in your face indecency. All the classic rock from back in the day reeked of a burning desire for freedom and life experiences, both good and bad. Jim Stapley is of a new generation of classic rock, but being contemporary is not synonymous with being new, different or genre changing. In Stapley’s case especially it is quite the opposite. Like so many before him his music is riddled with histrionic guitar solos, husky soulful vocals and almost formulaically epic song themes. But despite seeming almost like a classic rock caricature at risk of being consigned to the pastures dull, the live record is a hearty and enjoyable musical feast. Stapley’s vocals are a highlight, ringing out like a young Rod Stewart, and having shared the stage with the likes of Ronnie Wood, Jim Stapley has earned the credentials to emulate the legends that preceded him in his sound and style. Hardly original, but good fun nonetheless. Top tracks are ‘This Ain’t Livin’’ and ‘My Way Home’. By James Rowland

Preview–Brighton Pride
Brighton Pride Starting as a gay protest in the early 1970s, the event has grown in size and spectacle with more than 160,000 people taking part in the celebrations. Slowly becoming a victim of its own success, Pride had to juggle holding one of the biggest free parties in Europe and raising money for local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) services. But despite soaring attendance figures the park event has failed to pay for itself in the last two years. “The average donation from people who came to the park last year was 23p,” explains Russell Allen, chairman of Pride. “The bill for this year’s event is approaching £500,000. “23p from every person doesn’t pay anywhere near that, let alone raising a surplus which we can donate back to LGBT services that work all year round.” So there are some significant changes to Pride’s park event this year, not least a change of weekend, but the most controversial of all is the erection fencing encircling the entire park forcing party-goers to pay for entry. “Following the 2010 event the statutory services made it clear that something needed to change to ensure safety at the event,” Russell says. ”We had to control attendance. The only way to really control attendance was to fence round the park and issue tickets. “There was no choice, the council, police and fire brigade would not license an event that was in an open park. I know this won’t go far to address the concerns of people who believe in the ethos of a free park event, but these are
www.bn1magazine.co.uk
Brighton is widely known for celebrating diversity and as a result a staple of the city’s event calendar is the annual Pride in Brighton and Hove event in Preston Park. the hard facts.” “I believe by controlling the attendance to the park and asking people to pay a fair ticket price puts the charity on a level financially and is our best option yet to raise money for those front line services that need it desperately”. X-factor star Joe McElderry and diminutive 80’s pop assassin Sonia will be lighting up the Main Stage which returns by extraordinary popular demand. The dance tent has also undergone big revamp this year as well. The capacity has more than doubled and is being organised by The Last Night a DJ Saved My Life Foundation. This local group, which works to encourage charitable giving from the dance industry, is bringing Danny Rampling and a wide range of world class DJ talent to this beloved corner of the Pride site. GO.G, Europe’s largest open air lesbian festival, are promising something special as they host the revamped and rebranded women’s tent. The established features of Pride are still there. Such as the Bears tent, an improved The Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) tent, the Community Village, the everreliable Cabaret Tent, the obligatory funfair and of course lots of bars. Brighton Marina will be returning to raise temperatures yet
again, with plenty of naked flesh on their portable beach. And… We’ve also been promised a lot more toilets, always a concern at any large event. One thing that hasn’t changed at all is the infamous parade, which will be lazily snaking its way through the town from Madeira Drive from 11am onwards. Some dramatic and necessary alterations may have been made to Brighton’s Pride, but the organisers are adamant that they can turn the ailing event around and turn it into a successful charity event that all the participants can enjoy and benefit from. “The feedback we’ve received said that the overcrowding hampered people’s enjoyment of the event,” says Russell. “The fence defines capacity, there are 47,000 tickets on sale, and so overcrowding won’t be such a problem. The people who come to the event will all want to support the charity because they’ve already been motivated to pay to come.” Pride in Brighton and Hove takes place at Preston Park on Saturday 13th August. Advance tickets are £12.50 online and from local participating businesses. www.brightonpride.org www.ticketline.co.uk /pride-inbrighton-and-hove-tickets By Stuart Rolt Image by David Smith

Review - Space At Komedia
Radio 1 Controller Andy Parfitt
The Space, Komedia Thursday, 7th July
There are a great many publications that do the rounds in Brighton and further afar that tout the worthiness of “unsung heroes” of the cities in which they originate. Perhaps the most overlooked of these within the creative community are Wayne Imms, Paul Mex and The Space team who provide some of the most enlightening, fascinating and amusing events within the city with their collection of the great and good from the entertainment industry taking time out to regale the crowds with tales and anecdotes of their experience. Taking a format similar to the popular “An Evening With....” series, the Space team have provided us with such disparate and fascinating guests as Barry Norman, Frank Skinner, Alan Parker and William Orbit over the past few months, expertly hosted and guided by Briggy Smale, Lisa Holloway and Juice FM’s Guy Lloyd. July’s event was no different, and in fact proved rather seminal as the last public appearance of Andy Parfitt, the controller of Radio One for the past 13 years, prior to his surprise announcement of his retirement. Parfitt took to the stage first and provided a tremendously forthright and revealing insight into his journey to the top echelons of BBC broadcasting. His passion and pride in what the station has achieved were evident, and his advice on how to control the likes of Chris Moyles showed his adeptness at the role, along with a keen sense of humour. Part of the enjoyment one gets from the Space is the opportunity to ask and listen to some often testing questions from the crowd, and Parfitt was left to justify the high salaries both of himself and, in particular, Moyles, and did so in a sensible, controlled, and ultimately justifiable way. An impressive performance all round, even managing to fend off Guy Lloyd’s attempts to take over the R1 Breakfast Show for a dramatically reduced salary! Second to take the stage was Oscar winning film editor, Chris Dickens, whose roll-call includes Slumdog Millionaire, Hot Fuzz and Sean Of The Dead. Once again, Dickens was a charming guest, with some fabulous anecdotes about both his time in the cutting rooms of international film, interspersed with stories of a recent break-in at his house where the burglars left his Oscar untouched. Dickens also had the honour of drawing the tickets for the Space raffle which always contains some genuinely unique items, along with the opportunity for the lucky winners to have their prizes personally signed by the people involved in the production. The Space goes from strength to strength and is a Brighton event that is genuinely one that should not be missed. The next Space takes place on October 6th, and includes the musical force of nature that is Skin of Skunk Anansie fame, along with another as yet unconfirmed guest (though the names I’ve heard so far means you really should keep those eyes peeled !) Interview – The Beautiful Word
The Beautiful Word ‘We’re not that cool because everyone comes up to us and says ‘My mum loves you’ or ‘My kids love you’. The Beautiful Word’s sparkly song-writing and quirky melodies have been spreading the love in Brighton and beyond for over four years. From touring by Megabus, to playing their first gig in Oxfam, the forthright five-piece are anything but humdrum. Beki Turner caught up with Emily and Megan, the commanders of Mystery Pop, to find out more… So, starting with some history, how did The Beautiful Word collaborate, and who’s who? Megan: Emily’s from Kirriemuir in Scotland where the guy who wrote Peter Pan came from, and we met in Brighton. We started out doing some stuff as a three piece, with the lovely-looking Nelson. We toured on the Megabus and our first gig was in Oxfam on North St. The others are Jonesy from Seaford who’s really shy and chilled and just amazing at bass. Gruff’s from Guildford and has been in lots of bands and he’s well indie and well into it. Emily: He’s really trendy, and he knows what’s going on. The boys made the band a bit more serious. It was a bit too pretty and girly before. How did you come up with your ‘Mystery Pop’ genre and how many other bands and artists have given themselves that classification? Emily: We made it up, so that means that we can say we’re the best mystery pop band. Megan and I have personas and we say
20
August 2011
that I’m the mystery and Megan’s the pop. Megan: Emily’s mysterious and I’m really cheesy. Emily: It’s trendy to be anti-pop but I think it’s cool. It’s pop for a reason. Pop music’s great. Megan: Beyonce’s great. Our two word phrase simultaneously does a lot of stuff. Maybe I’m just overanalysing it because we wanted to stand out. You’ve played over 200 gigs since you started out. What’s your favourite one and why does it stand out? Megan: We played this gig at Sussex Uni’s Fresher Fair which was cosmic. There were 200 people sitting on cushions and we played and they were so nice, it made me feel like we’re a lot bigger than we are. We sold 54 CDs that day which funded our second album. People are weird aren’t they? Everyone was excited about it and impressionable and new to the town. Emily: Playing Secret Garden was similar. It can be hard to get people to appreciate you in Brighton because everyone’s in a band. When you go somewhere that doesn’t have loads of local bands, it’s better for your ego. Megan: Basically whenever we get to play to lots of people, it’s amazing. In Scotland, the town Emily grew up in is amazing. She’s a bit famous there. Whenever she cooks an egg, they make it a feature in the local paper. She’s probably the second most famous
person after the guy who wrote Peter Pan. Emily: The bus gig was good. It fitted in with the rule that if you feel really terrified about a gig, it usually ends up being the best one. Do you know Flash Bang Band? Megan: Flash Bang Band hired a double-decker bus, we played on the top deck and they played on the bottom deck. The bus drove up to Devil’s Dyke and I headbutted a window, but it was a really good gig and it sold out. We stopped at The Devil’s Dyke and everyone had a roll-up and a chat and then we just drove back. Is there a particular gig or festival you’d love to play? Megan: We’d really love to play Green Man Festival because this year Beirut are playing. It’s a real folk and pop festival and it’s really lovely and green and eco. I always wanted us to all go to New York as well because they really like English people and everyone there’s so forward and forthright. Have you got a favourite Brighton venue? Megan: That is so hard because I don’t want to make anyone sad. I love the Albert, it’s amazing. We played in Jubilee Square during The Great Escape, and played Northern Lights once. Everyone just squished in upstairs and we played out of the window. We love the Latest Music Bar. It’s beautiful, underused and underseen. I’d say our favourite times we’ve played in Brighton was Brunswick Square and St Ann’s Well Gardens. Whenever we play outside it’s really lovely and perfect for our music. Yes, our favourite venue is St Ann’s Wells Garden.

Heading
What do you like about living in Brighton? Emily: The sea, the vibe and the people. Megan: The support network for unsigned bands you wouldn’t get in other towns. Small fish, big pond, but awesome pond. The music’s amazing and everyone you meet is creative. My mum lives in Haywards Heath and she says that Brighton’s like living in a bubble and it’s not how real towns are, but why the hell would you move out? That’s the best reason to stay ever. It’s not even a real place! Brighton’s in touch with its inner child. Emily: The first time I came to Brighton, I got off the train, smelled the sea air and thought ‘Oh my God, there’s a wizard over there’. Some guy with a cape, hat and wand was just standing around.
www.bn1magazine.co.uk
Are there any bands and artists both local and not-so-local that you admire? Any that you’d want to tour with? Megan: Locally, we’re in love with a lot of bands. Gentleman Starkey are amazing, Mechanical Brideare they local? Peggy Sue means a lot to us, and we love Sparrow. Sweet Sweet Lies are cool, we love them. Not so locally, Beirut, Dirty Projectors, Belle and Sebastian and Camera Obscura. Emily: If Bjork ever mentioned our name, I’d probably cry. I’d love to tour with Broken Social Scene, but not sure if it’d be a good match. Your new single ‘Emily’ is released next month. Can you tell us a bit about it? Emily: Well, I didn’t write it, but I do like singing it because I get to say my name over and over again.
Megan: I wrote it. It’s not massively true. Emily was in Zimbabwe for three weeks; She teaches an instrument from Zimbabwe called a Mbira, and she went over there to research it. I wasn’t missing her and crying or anything, but I didn’t really know what to do. By Beki Turner

Cansei de Ser Sexy Ahead of the release of their third album, Brazilian new rave electronic indie rock band, Cansei de Ser Sexy (CSS) are back on the road with a scheduled stop at Brighton’s Digital this month. The five piece group from Sao Paulo have been dazzling audiences worldwide with their tight and playful brand of art-pop. As a European leg of touring draws near, fans are now eagerly awaiting the end to a three year wait since their last album. La Liberacion captures a band, already famous for reinventing themselves, at it again. Leaning this time around toward punk, reggae and an air of psychedelic influence, they look set to improve on the status of their already rapidly growing fan-base. Our intrepid reporter Chris Thom caught up with guitarist Luiza Sa to find out more. The band was formed in September 2003. How did this come about? Was it a group of friends wanting to make music or were there other influences involved? When we met and started the band it was really just an excuse to meet up with friends and do something together. I think all of us were kind of frustrated with our jobs and it was so fun to be making music and fooling around. We had no idea this could be our job one day. I think all of us love music but it wasn’t like we were following this career.
22
August 2011
Cansei de ser sexy means: “got tired of being sexy”, in Portuguese. It is reportedly a quote by Beyonce, what was the thinking behind it? We scheduled a show and we needed a name. It sounded pretty funny that she would say something like that. There wasn’t anything behind it, really. With most things we do we don’t stop to think what’s behind it. It just happens, and then we start thinking about it. You got signed in 2006 to SubPop Records and released your international debut album, Cansei de Ser Sexy. Was your explosion onto the scene something the band was prepared, and felt ready, for? Or did it all happen suddenly and out of the blue? I think things grew in a natural way. At the time SubPop signed us we were ready for it. Because in Brazil it felt like we’d reached a barrier and we didn’t see it moving forward. At the same time our first years of touring and working outside Brazil were quite busy and intense. It was definitely crazy. I rarely see a band that toured as much as we did and in that sense it felt like too much. But we really learned everything in the making, in
front of people almost and we got enormous experience from that. It really made us stronger. Your new album La Liberación comes out on 29th August. How long was it in the making? And what direction has it taken this time? You seem to reinvent your sound somewhat for each new album. The record took around a year to get ready. So much more time than the first two. It’s a very positive album, and once again is our version of Pop. We really try to make Pop music. Good Pop music. I don’t think we re-invent ourselves because it feels very genuine to me but also different. It’s hard to be able to see ourselves so clearly when you’re close to the process. I hope it feels really new, but also feels like we’re being ourselves, because that’s how we felt. This record is trying to focus on the moments in life when we felt empowered. Happy and free, living the life the way you want to. What’s it like working with Bobby Gillespie and Mike Garson (Famous US rock pianist) With Gillespie in mind… any shenanigans to speak of? Is he still a wild child? Admire his music? We love Primal Scream, as musicians and people. We met years ago in the festival life. With all the collaborations on the record everything happened via internet. Lovefoxxx sang on their last record that came out in 2008, so we were trading collaborations with him. He (Gillespie) did the vocals for the song, sent it back and it just felt perfect. Mike Garson’s story was similar, but different because we never met him. Adriano was going nuts with the arrangement of a song and then he wanted a piano that we would not be able to do. So he mentioned him to our manager and our manager happened to know him and asked. He said yes
www.bn1magazine.co.uk
Interview – Cansei De Ser Sexy and recorded a session and the whole version of the song was kind of done around it. We know you’ve played Brighton a few times before. What do you think of the Brighton crowd/scene? And what’s best gig or festival you’ve played to date? Is there a difference between the European crowds and the South American crowds? I think there’s a difference even between cities, but somehow we have amazing crowds all over. It would be unfair to pick one. So I’m just gonna say the last amazing crowd we had, and that was yesterday at Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. It was insane. People as far as my eyes could see, all dancing and jumping at the same time. It felt like a dream. We love the UK crowds. It’s famous for it!
www.bn1magazine.co.uk
Any band antics or mishaps on tour you can tell of? Like bad stuff? Why do you wanna talk about that? We are a happy group of friends. Luiza, you play guitar but also drums in the band. Is swapping instruments and roles within the band a common occurrence? I haven’t played the drums on the band since 2006. Carol played drums more than I did. Sometimes I play cowbell and keyboards. I guess we just did what we felt like and it was fun. But today we try to make whatever works best on the show. So in a way there’s more logistics, but we still swap stuff. I’m not very good at anything, but I want to play it all.
Are fashion gimmicks and elaborate antics on stage an integral part of your “thing”? I still don’t know what ANTICS means. But I don’t know, sometimes we have confetti and Lovefoxxx always has some great look. So maybe it’s OUR THING. I don’t know. What do you envisage doing after this particular album and tour? TAKING FABULOUS TIME OFF to make more music after!!! By Chris Alex Thom

Watersports are currently experiencing a huge boom in Britain. This is ma partly because most of these sports facilitate two of the greatest British obsessing about the weather.
With its proximity to the capital, ample beaches and often unlimited wind Brighton is becoming increasingly popular as a watersports destination. This is reflected by the runaway successes of Paddle Round the Pier. This annual event aims to provide a showcase for all the different “extreme” sports on offer in the area, whilst raising money for charity. This year’s great causes that benefitted were The RNLI, Teenage Cancer Trust and Surf Relief. Taking place over two glorious days last month, this massively popular event pulled nearly 50,000 visitors to the Hove seafront. Hove Lawns is the ideal location for an event of this kind. The huge grass area is perfect for the displays and markets. A short distance away the promenade provides hard standing for the skate ramps and sports areas, whilst the nearby beach and sea means all the watersports action is still close at hand. Fresh for this year was an expanded kid’s area, an even greater array of sports on display, a lush VIP area and a giant video screen featuring all the water-side action in the comfort of the Paddle Village. Ideal for those didn’t want to scuff up their nice trainers down on the beach. Over on the promenade there were three skate ramps with a huge number of enthusiastic and skilled BMX riders, in-line skaters and skateboarders showing off their capabilities. Further down the prom were Streetball, Land Paddling, Beach Volleyball and Slalom Skating displays. The main attraction for the whole weekend was, as always, the actual paddle around the skeletal remains of the West Pier, where an enormous flotilla of all kinds of water craft race round one of the cities more unusual landmarks. Also popular, and usually quite eventful, spectacle is the Paddle Something Unusual event, where the more creative and foolhardy participants see find out what the craziest thing Over the weekend there were scores of competitions for all types of water sports enthusiasts, including pier to pier races, 20-mile endurance races and life-saving demonstrations. Competitions and exhibitions like these attract spectators and participants from all over the world and have helped establish the Paddle Round the Pier as Europe’s largest and best free beach and water sports festival. Tattoo Monthly
With Becka Marie
This month we have an artist interview with Lewis Buckley: young blood in Brighton’s tattoo community, BM: How long have you been tattooing? LB: I’ve been tattooing for around one year, and was apprenticed initially for 6 months. I’m continuing to learn while working. BM: What first made you decide to pursue a career as a tattoo artist? LB: I never made an asserted decision to be a tattoo artist initially. I’d spent most of my life drawing graphic and comic styles – my dream was to become a comic book artist, but after four years of college and university, studying illustration, animation, media and graphic design, I came to a standstill. It’s a very closed industry. After I finished university, some friends who were tattoo artists suggested I give tattooing a try. I spent time researching tattoo styles, history, and noted people within the industry and became very interested. It was around this time that I was offered an apprenticeship, so I feel it was a matter of being in the right place at the right time. BM: What are the upsides of a career in the tattoo industry? You get to draw awesome pictures on people and get paid to do it! LB: And what are the downsides or drawbacks? You forget what sleep is like. You can drop Lewie a line at majinitachi@hotmail.co.uk to book a consultation.

Chocolate & Pomegranate Pies So deliciously indulgent, I challenge you to eat just one! You can use pre-bought shortcrust pastry if you don’t have time to make your own. Serves: 8 Preparation: (incl chilling) approx. 90 mins Cooking time: 30 mins
For The Pastry:
Chocolate Ganache: Preparation: 40 minutes
Ingredients: 140g Plain White Flour/All Purpose Flour 30g Cocoa Powder 15g Caster Sugar 85g Vegetable Shortening eg – Trex (cut into small pieces & kept in fridge) 2tbsp Cold water (you probably won’t need it all) A little Oil for brushing Method: Pre heat the oven to 200 oC (conventional) or 180 oC (fan). Sift the flour, sugar, cocoa powder & salt into a mixing bowl. Add the shortening and use the knives like scissors to chop the shortening into the flour. Use your hands to ‘rub in’ the shortening till it starts to form a dough. Gradually add a little water and mix till it forms a paste. Add more water if necessary but don’t want to add too much. It should now look like a lump of smooth plastacine (a paste). On a lightly floured surface, carefully roll out your paste till it is approximately 3mm thick. Take your glass and make little pastry circles. Lightly brush 8 of the holes of the cupcake or muffin tray with a little oil. Using a palette knife, gently remove the pastry circles from the board into holes in the muffin tray. Place into the fridge to chill for at least 20 minutes. Cut out 8 circles of baking parchment & place on the pastry. Add some baking beans into each hole and place into a preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven. Discard the parchment & store the baking beans. Return the pastry to the oven and cook for 10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and leave to cool.

Review—The Round Georges
The Round Georges Situated on the corner of Canning Street, up from central Kemp Town, lies a splendid public house known as the Round Georges. As soon as we entered we got a warm sense of belonging in this friendly and appealing local gem of a pub. With plenty of seating arrangements in and outside including a newly refurbished function come fine dining area, complete with gallery work from local artists and photographers. It didn’t take us long to realise that this is a pub that prides itself on top quality gastro food (served 12 till 3pm and 6 till 9pm Monday to Saturday), with exquisite home cooked roasts on Sundays. With such an enticing menu on offer we sat down to sample some of their food delights. We went for the very modestly priced 2 course lunch offer for just £9.95 and opted for the ham salad for starter and a slow cooked pork belly for main. Both dishes were cooked with finesse; the pork belly was cooked to perfection with a melt in the mouth flavour alongside consistent and crunchy crackling. I was then informed that they pride themselves on freshly preparing everything on the premises with all cure meats locally sourced and supplied

by Bramptoms Butchers, a local butchers in Kemp Town. It’s also refreshing to see the landlord increase the number of Ales on offer with the addition of Black Sheep, which has a light and hoppy flavour and medium brown colour and is also modestly priced at around £2.60. It was clear that plenty of effort has gone into making this pub welcoming for anyone who passes through or is regular, upholding restaurant style gastro menus, live entertainment and community values. This is also with the added bonus of live sports, which is rapidly becoming a rarity now in Brighton. This pub has it all, including the popular Quiz nights every Monday evening. We recommend visiting this pub for the food alone! Especially the Sunday roast, which includes a mouth watering organic Goodwood leg of lamb & mint sauce or the Walnut, stilton & mushroom loaf. Keep an eye out for updates on gallery pictures and exhibitions at the Round Georges, plus live entertainment on their Facebook page. The Round Georges 14-15 Sutherland Road, Brighton

The Secret Garden Party
The Secret Gar Fruit Golf, Flying Sumo’s, bearded kittens, naked lunatics, a portable drink-pit-stop and a hefty mix of outlandish costumes and smiley faces, it could only mean one thing... We had arrived at The Secret Garden Party! With the theme embracing Origins and Frontiers we were surely in for a treat over the 4 day festival. As soon as we entered the magical grounds of the Secret Garden we found ourselves immersed in the good vibes and beautiful scenery. The first job was to do a lap and suss out what’s what! I was quite taken aback at the amount of small to medium sized stages scattered about the festival, from your live bands and folky tents to the hardcore dance and rave tents. It had everything, including healing areas, a big kids area, an interstellar circus, a plethora of food delights, a lake (don’t forget the lake!) a Collosillyum and we’ve just skimmed the surface. You could even get your hair done at the secret salon! After a few mojito’s and cans of San Miguel it was time to check out Dragonfly stage in the middle of the lake. This was a nice feature of the festival and an opportunity to have a little daytime rave-up and perhaps a sneaky splash at your fellow revellers. Blondie was up on the Main Stage, Saturday night. I felt a little let down by the sound engineer on this one, you could hardly hear Debbie Harrys voice! But to her credit she put in a stunning performance as the sun set behind the main stage. You’ve gotta give it to her, I think she’s 66!
30
August 2011
Then came the highlight of the festival. The burning of the Dragonfly (lake) stage. A large live DJ platform in the middle of the lake with a huge dragonfly piece of architecture arching over the top. Once alight, fireworks were automatically set off igniting the heavens along with fire acrobats and flares plus thousands of glow-in-the-dark balloons lit up the night sky. Leftfield followed playing a blinding set, smashing out all the classics getting the crowd bopping to the likes of Release The Pressure and Original, with a rather tasty AV show. Martha Reeves and The Vandellas played to a Sunday crowd, with a pitch/time perfect set, which you should expect from the veterans of Rhythm and blues and doo-wop. Although I don’t think they’ve changed their intros and stage act for the past 40 years. The Sunday also brought a huge paint fight down at the Main Stage, which brought a chaotic cloud of colour. Everywhere you went you could find all sorts of Shenanigans. That’s the beauty of The Secret Garden Party, you don’t spend all your time watching live bands, you get more involved with the party atmosphere, joining weird and wonderful talks, sitting by the fire on a lovely summers eve trying to focus on your next adventure (and pint!). exploring the woods to find a crazy badger rave, or piano playing nut job. I could go on but it is one of those festivals you have to experience to believe.

queen (why would you go to London to see queens when you live in Brighton?) but to see ‘The Black Crowes’ on their farewell tour (jealous? moi?...absolutely!). But otherwise I haven’t been to the bar much this month for the very good reason that they’ve run out of Kit Kats. They may have installed a super fast new Internet service for customers and hangers on like me (good!) but the failure to re-stock Kit Kats (which yours truly sticks in the freezer for 20 minutes before ordering his Cappuccino) is, frankly, unforgivable. I shall continue to boycott the place until normal chocolate services resume!
Bill Bailey
I’m writing this having just returned from the countryside retreat which is the beautifully appointed Yellow Fish Studios near Lewes this week where we helped Teenage Cancer Trust to record a song written and performed by teenagers affected by the disease. It was, in spite of the prevailing circumstances, an incredibly uplifting experience, with these cheeky, smiling girls ripping us to pieces all day long - well, yours truly in particular - with their fast wit and street banter. I think everybody involved had a great day, including all the musicians, engineers, and studio staff who happily gave their time and talent for free - Robin ‘Pop Music! Meanwhile, I see my old mate Gary Hutchins has come up smelling of the scent of roses again. Having loaned Jack (son of Gary) Moore one of his guitars for a special all star charity night at the Albert Hall, Hutchins gained national media coverage by dint of the fact that Bill Bailey also performed that night playing one of Gary’s infamous 6-necks (presumably for comedic purposes). As we at BiG iAM are now formally employed to handle Hutchins PR, I, of course, immediately attempted to claim credit for the whole thing, including the fact that Prince Charles attended sound check and reportedly chatted to Bill about the 6 neck. The obvious reality to all, however, is that none of us had the slightest clue Bill was using Gary’s gear but we’re pretty pleased he is. What’s more the guitar (there are, at most, about a dozen in existence) will be displayed as a design piece in the Victoria and Albert Museum later this summer, before going on a world tour of prestigious art museums. If only all our PR commissions were as easy as Gary’s.....
The Brunswick Talking of easty PR commissions (not!) I’m now off to try - try being the operative word - and promote a super jam gig at the Brunswick on Friday, 19th August which features ‘er indoors (Jo Harman), guitarist Terry Lewis (Leon Ware, Impressions), Simon Carter (Jamiroquia), drummer Jack Pollitt (Beyonce) and more featuring, from America, a pretty famous mystery saxophone player who can’t be named because of some complicated contractual - come - visa issue. Oh the joys of being a PR man....please show up, at this rate I might need an audience! Till next time, keep it steady...... Mark Ede info@bigiam.co.uk

Review – The Western Front
The Western Front By Emily Sneyd
Set slap –bang in the heart of Brighton adjacent to Churchill square shopping centre, the Western Front provides a welcome haven for tired shoppers and those yearning for a relaxing post-work drink, offering the usual selection of wines and spirits as well as some choice local beers.
As for the food, the pub is very proud of their new chef, who has created a new menu using local ingredients. It’s a menu made up of mains you’d expect such as homemade beef burgers but it has a gastro pub edge with surprises like their homemade chicken and chorizo burger. I decided to order the oak smoked salmon and prawn salad and really enjoyed it – you get a good slab of delicious salmon and the salad was very fresh and tasty which was surprising as pub salads tend to be fairly lacklustre. My dinner companion ordered the special which was a pan fried pork chop with garlic roast potatoes and he enjoyed every bite. Both dishes were impeccably presented, which again, you just don’t expect from a pub in the centre of town. The mains are reasonably priced for the quality varying from around £7- £9 and there are also great sharing plates such as whitebait and calamari for those just after a snack to curb the appetite. The kitchen closes at 8 so although it’s probably not somewhere you’d choose to go for a date, it’s a fantastic place to grab a bite after work or before heading to another bar, given its close proximity to West Street and the South Lanes. The Western Front is located on 11 Cranbourne Street, BN1 2RD.
The place itself miraculously manages to avoid being your run-of the-mill inner City pub and has a rather charming saloon feel with bricked walls and quirky mismatched wooden tables and chairs which do a lot to make you feel relaxed. This is only enhanced by the friendly staff that will go out of their way to make sure you’re served well. There is plenty of seating outside for enjoying drinks through the summer months but also ample seating inside, especially upstairs where there are windows overlooking Churchill Square – perfect for people watching.
