BRIGHTON DURING APRIL with Joel Windels

Spring is here at last bringing with it the promise of long sunny days on the beach and picnics in the park. Brighton has to be one of the best places to be at this time of the year, so what’s going on this month to get us in the mood for summer? Most of us have spent months under lots of layers, happily tucking into full fat comfort food and now have that annual battle to get into last years swimming costume, but not so for those dedicated, motivated individuals who have signed up for this years Brighton Marathon on Sunday 10th April for Cancer Research. If you’re one of them, good luck but if not you could always jog down to one of the cheering points and show your support. Cheering equipment provided apparently. That jog will probably have brought on an appetite and a raging thirst, so luckily this month is all about food and drink. The Spring Harvest Food and Drink Festival is a good place to start with events such as the Sussex Beer Festival or for the more refined, the Champagne and Sussex Sparkling Wine Festival. There are two Sussex Markets to browse, a Taste of Sussex Bus Tour and a whole week of restaurants offering fixed price menus for you to try out places you might not have tried before. Full details, venues and dates on brightonfoodfestival.com. April also brings Easter, eggs and chocolate so head for the Chocolate Festival on the 16th and 17th April in New Road or join in an egg hunt followed by an egg rolling competition down Devil’s Dyke on the 25th. Bring your own decorated boiled egg! By now you really don’t have much chance of squeezing into last year’s shorts, so spring clean your wardrobe, and go along to My Swish Charity Clothes Swap at the Hotel du Vin on the 10th. Sorry, no Primark, leggings or trainers allowed!! Finally, before you turn over, spare a thought for the Big Lemon bus service. It’s under threat of closing down and needs all the support it can get to stay on the road. Brighton wouldn’t be the same without it, do your bit! www.thebiglemon.com

APRIL 2011 LIVE MUSIC GUIDE

A HAWK & A HACKSAW

LIVE MUSIC GUIDE The live music scene in Brighton is bustling with talent and is somewhat hard to decide which shows to spend your hard earned pennies on. Here’s a glimpse at some of our recommended shows. By Brad Middleton

PROUD, April 21st Like their occasional collaborator Beirut this band who have traveled far from their Albuquerque home for inspiration. They mix Yugoslavian, Greek and Romanian folk and gypsy music with the merest hint of the desert plain that surrounded them during their youth and young adulthood and completes a compelling sound that is high on originality. The fact that the gig is at Proud, the venue that used to be the Hanbury, only adds to the desirability of this gig.

THE BLOCKHEADS KOMEDIA, April 29th The legends who backed the legendary Ian Dury return to Brighton exactly one year on from their triumphant gig down here last year. These guys have been there, done it and probably helped make the t-shirt to celebrate it all and whilst we all know what to expect this should be a great gig for their fans.

AUDIO, April 26th This dubstep duo isn’t what you would typically expect from this scene. Finding their ideal format in the album-length they stretch the idea of what dubstep can be all about. They bring in some xx style experimentation as well as some acoustic leanings and create a

compelling sound that is original within the context of dubstep whilst still maintaining the danceability.

‘THE MOSH LIVES’ WITH EMMURE CONCORDE 2, May 1st This is a must for all you metal heads out there with Emmure making waves in the wake of their new album Speaker of the Dead which has been widely praised in the rock press as being a work of true violent ferocity. Add all of that to three great, hot new support bands – Winds of Plague, War from the Harlot’s Mouth and Iwrestledabearonce – and this is a package that offers something for all you metallers in these times of financial hardship.

BEST COAST COALITION May 2nd One of the highlights of last year was the debut album by this bunch of stoners from LA who make, what is quite simply, some of the best pop music I’ve heard in years. The fact that their best song isn’t even on the album just shows how great this special band truly are. Sound-wise imagine a stoned-out Ramones playing with lots of fuzzy guitars and songs of girlfriends, animals and sitting around in their underwear. Live, as I witnessed at last year’s Great Escape, they rock pretty hard and there is a definite garage rock influence which simply makes them even better.

APRIL 2011 LOOKING AHEAD—FESTIVAL FRINGE

Once again Brighton Festival Fringe are ensuring that Brighton residents and visitors alike are utterly spoilt for choice this May. Whether it’s comedy, cabaret, visual arts or contemporise dance you’re looking for then there is a good chance something, somewhere will appeal to you. But it’s not just the more traditional performance arts that are been given a platform.

There’s portable crazy golf, a wall of vaginas, neuropsychology, popup restaurants, clown shows, nightclubs, belly dancing, gay bingo and several circuses all setting up shop for the month. Let’s not forget the centrepiece Fringe City – Hits The Streets event which sees all manner of weird and wonderful street performers invading the Jubilee Square for the weekends. It’s not just about big glitzy performances either, there are numerous literary events, youth art shows, workshops and the ever popular unusual tours taking place in a incredible calendar of events and experiences that should cater for every taste imaginable. There is no shortage of things to do; the question is what do you do? That and just who, or what, is Mr Pineapple Head? Theatre performances feature heavily in the list of must-see shows this year. The standout performances include The Rotten Wedding, an imaginary interactive wedding reception and The Unbuilt Room, where visitors wander through a selection of strange and wonderful rooms in an attempt to define how we remember and perceive events. Something that will probably be omitted from the Michelin guide this year though, is The Faulty towers Dining Experience at the Thistle Hotel, which aims to recreate the idiotic and haphazard approach to dining service of the much loved TV series.

L A V I T S F E I NG E FR

It’s not just about providing thrilling or thought-provoking shows though; the Brighton Festival Fringe also prides itself on exploiting unusual performance spaces. You can check out The Odd Couple at Brighton Yacht Club, synchronised swimming and Hollywood classics at the Prince Regent or sample some gin and discuss literature in a converted 19th Century rail carriage. How anyone can get round to see to see everything in the Brighton Festival Fringe 2011 programme is beyond us. Feel free to send us an email if you can prove you’ve achieved that this year, if you still have the strength.

APRIL 2011 LOOKING AHEAD—BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION —By Stuart Rolt Asian Dub Foundation have come a long way since they sprung from a community music project. They’ve travelled the world playing some of the greatest festivals on the planet and drawing influences from an increasingly diverse range of sources. Read the full version of the interview at BN1magazine.co.uk

The band come to the Brighton Festival for a very special show this May. So BN1’s Stuart Rolt caught up with guitarist Steve Chandra Savale to find out what’s going on. Tell us about A History of Now? I don’t know if you’ve seen the cover, it’s an imaginary phone app. You can reduce the whole world into a simple iPhone app, and that’s the history of now. The theme of the album is how that is reshaping us. ADF have been around for a long time now and in that time the whole means of interacting with each other has been completely transformed. We wanted to comment on that. Where’s actual time, where’s actual reality. It’s a funny transformative time. How about Egypt? Many people regard social networking as being responsible for the revolution there. Of course, but I don’t think people should get carried away with that. It speeds up communication no doubt, but that’s like saying the Cuban revolution was created because of the telephone. You’ve got to have that collective willpower in the first place. Facebook and Twitter didn’t create these revolutions; they just facilitated them in an unprecedented way.

10

How do you think the Internet has changed the music industry? It’s completely changed it beyond recognition. It’s completely changed the relationship between the musician, the record company and the consumer. For the consumer it’s a revolution in their favour, no doubt. But the big problem is that the free aspect of it, in fact not just the free aspect of – it’s the deals that have been done that screw musicians. Think of Spotify, it’s a wonderful service for the consumer, but we don’t get paid anything of that, virtually nothing. Lady Gaga had 10 million hits from one song and got paid £110. I started in the days when you had advances and tour supports and things like that. Younger musicians are not going to listen to a whinging old band about a thing like this, they’re just going to get on with it, and good luck to them. What would your best piece of advice for an aspiring musician? When most people discuss music now they very rarely talk about music. Like we’ve done, we haven’t talked about sound or trends in music. People mostly talk about the relationship between the musician, the fans, the record company and the Internet. That’s all we talk about. My advice would be focus on the music and focus on doing something that’ll blow everybody away. Forget marketing, forget formatting and forget compromising. Let’s have some people out there that really need to do what they do, rather than it being a lifestyle choice. That’s what we need more of in music, we need people who are inescapably driven to say their piece. What’s your Brighton show going to be like? There will be stuff from the latest album, but we’ll be doing a spread of stuff going back to the first release. Fortress Europe will be in there, probably Rebel Warrior. We are getting most of the people off of the album to appear. It should be a pretty good show.

Inspired by the ongo by a plethora of very will be well and truly with a special one-of

oing struggle in Burma and surrounded y special guests, Asian Dub Foundation y smashing it up at Brighton Festival ff event on the 7th May.

APRIL 2011 LOOKING AHEAD—BRIGHTON FESTIVAL

CIRCA CIRCUS —By Stuart Rolt Combining physical beauty, extraordinary circus skills and an immersive use of sound, light and projection - this ‘stripped back circus of the heart’ was the toast of Edinburgh Fringe 2010. We tracked down Yaron Lifschitz, their creative director, for a chat.

So what is your pre-production process like? How do the concepts for the shows come about? Train skills continually, and then we go through intense creative periods where we explore particular languages, rules and techniques that are important to the concept of the show. The concepts originate with me, but the performers and I are engaged in a continuous set of dialogue and conversations about where the work goes and new ideas for scenes. What’s has been the most remarkable physical-theatre/circus performance you’ve seen? I’ve had the benefit of seeing lots of great work, whether it’s the skills of Cirque du Soleil, the humanity of 7 Fingers or the performance ability of James Thierry. But one of the things I love about being an artist and a creator is that I’m not really in this business because I like other peoples work, I’m fundamentally interested in a set of ideas about the way in which circus can reveal our humanity and our poetic spirit, in which circus is in a sense a force for good in these troubled times. And that’s what I focus on. What are the routines your fans can plan on seeing? Is there anything you consider a Circa staples? I think all the acts have a Circaness to them - a twist or a particular approach. But I think it’s

the way that the group functions, and the way they reveal their individuality, their vulnerabilities and their quirks to the audience, through the circus, that is the main staple. You‘ve performed all over the world, is there any one place that stands out as being particularly memorable? There have been so many memorable places, from Screaming selling out enormous theatres in Bogotá, opening major festivals in Europe and Ireland, performing at the Barbican or being the first Australian circus to perform at Le Tohu in Montreal. The world has been full of incredible memorable adventures. If you were out on the job market and had to put your skills down on a résumé, what would you write? I don’t know that bald intellectual Jews who run circuses have that much to offer the rest of the world. But I think my skills primarily are: to conceive an artistic vision, to unite a team with outrageous talent around that vision and to strategically place that vision in the world. What’s your favourite music right now? Right now I’m listening to: Debussy, Hayden, REM, Peter Gabriel and a range of very young contemporary musicians. I think that music is the most powerful, astounding thing that humans have ever created. But a single piece would be impossible to choose. Where do you feel most at home? There are two places. One is the Quantas club lounge, where people feed me, there’s comfortable chairs and good internet access. They’re the same everywhere you go in the world, so I love that. I also feel most at home on my deck with my son and the beautiful Brisbane weather which is always a joy to come to.

APRIL 2011 LOOKING AHEAD—THE GREAT ESCAPE

As happened last year the Brighton Dome will be home to some true legends of modern music and a word of advice – from someone who struggled and failed to get into Broken Social Scene last year – get there as early as you can. If you are desperate to see either DJ Shadow, Friendly Fires and Sufjan Stevens then you now know what to do. DJ Shadow came to my attention back in the bad old days of the late 20th century when his debut album Entroducing landed like an alien craft into my little punker house and blew a lot of minds. How had he made such a record and why did it sound so damn good? Well, simply, here was someone like me who was obsessed with music and wanted to make a collage of all his favourite instrumental tracks and if we ever needed more proof then the shot of the record shop on the cover truly made me embrace this great record. All subsequent Mo’Wax stuff was interesting but nothing quite hit the heights of that first album and apparently this show he is going to play the whole thing which makes it one of my highlights of the entire festival if not the year in Brighton. Genuis new folkster Sufjan Stevens has made ten albums so why he’s playing as part of a new music festival I’m not totally sure but hell I’m damn glad he is. Having originally come to prominence with the wonderful Illinois in 2005 I’ve waited a fair while to see him and am glad he’s playing. Further down the bill this year we have four names which leap off the page at me and to whom I would recommend you go and see and don’t worry none of them have appeared on the front cover of the NME claiming to be the future of music. First up, Yuck, who are genuinely a new band having just released their debut album in February. Formed from the ashes of London based indie rock band Cajun Dance Party, Yuck do a lot of great things – loud, noisy guitars mixed in with glorious pop songs all of which has helped them draw comparisons with the likes of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr which is clearly a great place to start. Next up is Warpaint, an interesting all-girl band who carve out original experimental rock music from their base in Los Angeles. After the success of their show at last year’s Great Escape, when they didn’t even have an album to plug, they’ll be looking to storm this year’s event and promise to be one of the real highlights. This year we’ve even got an album for them to promote in the shape of their debut full-length The Fool which came out through Rough Trade in October last year. Trust me, if there is going to be one band who you could see this year who will soon be too big for shows like these it is Warpaint so grab the chance and get your skinny ass down to this now whilst you still can. Lastly, a true legend in the making and one whom I’m lucky enough to have caught previously – at the 2009 Nightmare Before Christmas fest – Josh T. Pearson. He used to be in little-known band Lift to Experience who released one of the finest albums of the 90s in the shape of the amazing Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads before vanishing off everyone’s radar soon after. A few years later Pearson returned to the live circuit and played all over the place whilst not actually laying down any tracks in a studio. This made it a bit hard for him to develop a fanbase outside of the few heads who’d had their minds blown or expanded by this work with Lift To Experience but it seemed to work. Now we actually have an album – March’s Last of the Country Gentlemen - to base all the hype around and his show should be one of the shows of the festival. A rough lo-fi recording made in Berlin in the space of two nights it is sure to catch the ear of those lucky enough to know where to look. That’s it for our preview this month but tune in next month when we’ll be bringing you some more amazing bands you can’t afford to miss out on as well as looking at some of the other things which you should try and get to if you have the time and you’re not too hungover.

APRIL 2011 LOOKING AHEAD—THE GREAT ESCAPE

AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR —By Stuart Rolt Instrumental Postrock quartet And So I Watch You From Afar have succeeded in doing something that’s fairly rare in the rock world. They’ve created a sound that is ferociously in your face, and yet strangely compelling.

They’ve been taking their monstrous, almost symphonic wall of sound all over the globe in the last few years, and down they bring the noise to The Great Escape Festival this May. We got talking to guitarist Tony Wright to find out what his bands all about (apart from having a really long name). We have to ask, so let’s get it out the way now: what’s the origin of the name? Ah, the name question. How I have missed thee. It’s not really a great story, Johnny, our bassist, came up with it. It’s a misheard line from a Team Sleep song. I like to think it’s kind of Orwellian. You’re monitored everywhere, including right now. We have cameras everywhere... or not. How long have you all known each other? How did you meet? We’re all north coast bums that were attracted to each other by pheromone scents. Many years ago, Johnny and I were in a band together for some time, and so were Rory and Chris, then I joined a band with those guys and later on we jammed with Johnny, thus ASIWYFA was born. Ta-daa! What inspired you to make music together? Individually it’s all any of us have done for as long as we can remember. There’s not a lot to do as a

16

young person coming from where we do if you’re not into sports, so we naturally just gravitated together. Like Brangelina, kinda. What are the main themes or topics for most of your tunes? Do you think these themes come across without the aid of lyrics adequately? The most constant theme I guess would be positivity, just trying to get stuff done for yourself; DIY. Don’t complain about resources not being there for you to accomplish what you envisage and just get out there and do it. Help will always come if you’re committed. How does your newest offering, Gangs, differ from your first album? It’s not eponymous like the first record. It’s shorter. It’s got different artwork and it’s on a different label. Sorry, that’s a cop out. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s a definite progression. What’s the point in releasing the same record again, you know? Clichés are clichés for a reason I guess. We’re so proud of it and very happy. We hope you all will be too. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Hmmmm, that’s a toughie. I suppose being broke all the time! Not seeing your friends or loved ones most of the year, although they do understand. We really can’t complain too much: we may be skint, but so is the rest of the planet! We get to travel and do what we love; mustn’t grumble. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands? Get out there and do it! You’ve been touring quite extensively, do you enjoy the touring process and is there anything you do to make it more enjoyable? Yes - all legal of course. We feel at home on tour. Is that an example of an oxymoron, or just a contradiction in terms?

You supported Them Crooked Vultures last year, how was that experience? Pretty amazing. I think if those guys stick at it, keep themselves out of trouble, they may have a future in this business. How do US crowds compare to the European ones on the mentalist scale? It depends where you are on both continents I guess. One thing everywhere has in common is the desire and hunger for passionate, interesting music. I hope we fulfil both those requirements wherever we go. What music did you listen to as kids? Was it all Krautrock and US punk bands, or was there some cheesy pop in there? I listened to cheesy US Krautpop. Still do. It’s great. Who would your watch from afar, if there was no fear of reproach? Have you started receiving weird gifts from crazed fans? I’ve consulted the lads on this; Rory is in love with Joanna Newsom and has a secret man crush on Sufjan Stevens. Chris is a big fan of Ritzy and The Joy Formidable in general. Johnny is a total narcissist, like Lex Luger, the dead wrestler, so a mirror would suffice for the big man. Me? I’m not at liberty to say, my lawyer has advised me. Lionel Hutz. The man is a magician. Who would win in a bare-knuckled battle for supremacy? Your machine... or Florence’s? Have you been speaking to my lawyer? I’m not at liberty to say though we do have two red heads remember. If we lose our temper at the same time, black holes envelope whole galaxies! www.escapegreat.com www.myspace.com/andsoiwatchyoufromafar

Since the demise of the festival no one dare mention (you know the word beginning in ‘B’ and ending in ‘down’), our region has cried out for a decent, independent, music lovers festival and Meadowlands certainly ticks all those boxes, not least in terms of it’s fabulously idyllic setting at Glynde Place, near Lewes. With budgets meaning that the programming has had to be imaginative rather than grandiose (no Grace Jones here, folks), the festival has nonetheless achieved an impressive list of established, new, emerging, favoured and cult artists, with names like Penguin Cafe, Mirrors, Tom McCrae, Foy Vance, Mamas Gun, Jo Harman and Kate Walsh included in the 60 strong artist bill. Fingers are crossed that the people of Brighton, London and surrounding areas will turn up in sufficient numbers this May to ensure this much needed celebration of ‘real’ music becomes a fixture in the events calendar year on year. With strong ticket sales to date, w w w. meadowl a nd sfest iv a l . com, the signs are good and this is surely the place to spend the late May bank holiday (27th-29th May).

‘Guitarist TV’ as an IPTV platform attracting 250,000 viewers a month from around the world. Partners in this venture include the wonderful Yellowfish studios (Led Zepplin connections et al) near Lewes, the excellent boys at Echo Video as well as the colourful presence of Mr. Gary Hutchins, he of the guitar company, ex-poof, sorry ex-manager of 4 poofs and a piano and all round diamond geezer with a CV that makes James Bond look like an accountant. I think it’s going to be a fun ride; albeit I, for one, shall be fastening my seat belt.

It’s something of a stop gap for said studio effort but it’s getting good reviews, selling well so I feel no particular need to clear out the doghouse just yet.... the atmosphere at Ede Towers is currently all sweetness and light. I’ll report back next month as to whether things continue that way. Till then...may your mojo be ever rising...Mark. Contact: Mark@bigiam.co.uk

A successful international DJ in his own right, Paul is actually a warm and accommodating fellow but, nonetheless, one never lost the sense that one was in the presence of a Gallagher. Whether this ‘edge’ was real, manufactured or simply falsely perceived, I’m not entirely sure but I feel fairly certain that a night out with Paul would be anything but boring.

ALOKA RESTAURANT REVIEW It had been a while since I had eaten at Aloka and I was looking forward to seeing how they were doing. As I walked into the bustling Tuesday lunch rush, it appeared they were doing really rather well indeed. Aloka has a light and airy dining area with lots of light woods and colourful bottles on the walls but the thing that caught my eye was the hot and cold buffet situated in the middle of restaurant. On one side were the hot dishes and a vast array of salads, pâtés and dips on the other. All dishes were so colourful and beautifully presented it was a shame they had to be destroyed by hungry customers like myself. Before I descended upon the buffet like a one man plague of locusts, I decided to start with a bowl of the Smoky Mushroom Soup with a Brazil Nut Ramasen. It was deliciously rich and was so creamy I would never have guessed it was vegan. Next I moved onto the buffet and piled my plate with goodies, starting with the Black Rice Cakes with Asian Cashew Cream. They were beautifully flavoured with garlic & ginger and the cashew cream was smooth and perfectly balanced to match the rice. Next was the Broccoli & Chickpea Herb Burgers. It’s very easy for broccoli to become overcooked in dishes like these but this was fresh, clean and perfectly seasoned with a little kick of chilli at the end. The salads were a visual treat too. They were fresh, exciting and bursting with colour. Each dish had a complete flavour and didn’t rely on any of the other salads to finish it but when eaten together, they complimented each other perfectly – not an easy feat to accomplish. My favourite was the lightly curried creamy raw parsnip & vine fruit salad; a brilliant updated interpretation of Coronation Salad. Chef Brydie Rowan O’Connor has created a wonderful lunch menu, with her love of food and attention to detail clearly presented in every dish. She told me all the produce used is organic or bio dynamic and this is evident especially in the salads where she has allowed the flavour of the vegetables to speak for themselves. Aloka isn’t a budget restaurant but you certainly get value for money and for food this good, it’s perfectly priced. Avoid this at your tastebuds peril. You have been warned! By Danny Vice. APRIL 2011 OUT AND ABOUT

WAKEBOARDING COMES TO HOVE LAGOON By Andrew Nicholls

There’s good news for water sports enthusiasts in Brighton and Hove this month; on April 9th the south coast’s first ever System 2.0 cable wakeboarding park is opening on Hove Lagoon. The park will give people of all abilities and ages (eight and over) the chance to have a go at this fantastic sport that is both great fun, and amazing value for money. Cable wakeboarding is a superfast extreme sport where riders are towed along at 20mph by a cable, performing jumps and doing tricks along the way. The System 2.0 is a two-towered straightline wakeboard rig that for the past two years has reinvented the sport. The system is used across the country and consists of two anchored towers with a cable at opposite sides of a body of water with a cable strung between them. The carrier pulling the rope changes speed and direction allowing riders to turn more easily than they would be able to if they were being pulled by a boat. The system allows riders to enjoy a continuous ride without having to worry about being dunked in the water at the end of the course; this maximises time spent on the water. All this may sound very complicated but it isn’t. Complete beginners can enjoy this sport, as well as those of increased experience; they just have to attend a short course to learn the basics beforehand. It only costs £50 for a two hour learn to wakeboard lesson that includes full tuition, wetsuits, impact vests, helmets, and the allimportant board so there’s no need to worry about buying expensive equipment. The system has been endorsed by professional athletes within the sport of wakeboarding as it gives them yet another tool to help them progress in their riding. Pros like Kevin Henshaw have even invented new tricks that wouldn’t be possible without it. Anyone interested in having a go should call 01273 424842, or visit www.wakeupbrighton.co.uk for more details.

APRIL 2011 OUT AND ABOUT

LATIN LOUNGE —RESTAURANT REVIEW By Sam Brodbeck

Simmering seductively since last December, Latin Lounge promises diners an exotic gateway to ‘Latin life.’ Brighton’s infamous West Street plays host to this restaurant and cocktail bar-cum-Latin music venue that would normally be more suited to a Buenos Aires boulevard or shady square in Madrid. Police on Saturday nights will be glad to find that this latest addition is not a happy hour drinking barn but caters to a more chilled-out clientele. We arrived, starving, at 9 o’clock, having waited so as not to appear like typical English people – cold and early-eating. I inadvertently ordered Latin Lounge’s most popular dish; Feijoada, unofficial national dish of Brazil and Portugal and made of beans, rice, chunks of tender meat and slices of spicy sausage. The waitress explained how the chef and some of the Lounge’s Brazilian regulars had collaborated and slowly tweaked the meal until it matched the authentic staple of home. So popular is the Feijoada that it has two dedicated nights every week accompanied by live Brazilian samba. ‘Feijoada Fridays’ boast £8.50 meals and a ‘Feijoada Family’ day on Sunday aims to rival the dominance of the traditional pub roast. While I tried to chomp like a Brazilian, my partner enjoyed constructing variations on classic fajitas, carefully selecting from a hot plate of sizzling vegetables and exploring the many bowls of dips and sauces. Choosing what to drink was more of a problem, simply reading through the menu of 80 cocktails (does anywhere in Brighton have more?)

was a challenge, but a well-balanced Caipirinha straight from Carnival was worth the effort. For barflies and cocktail connoisseurs it is worth remembering that Latin Lounge is one of very few places in England that offer cocktails using the legendary Pisco spirit made in the mountains of Chile and Peru. Music is clearly a big part of the Lounge’s concept and atmosphere. When we strolled through the door a rustic, three-piece band had just struck up – the drummer nonchalantly thrashing out sultry rhythms on an old box between his legs. Mondays host free flamenco nights where renowned international performers provide the background for dining and dancing. On April 9th one of the stars of West End musical Zorro, Ramon Ruiz, will be showcasing his Flamenco guitar skills. Regular Brazilian samba groups and a new Argentine tango night complete a trio of enchanting musical genres that ably fill the large main room. Just a castanet’s throw from the Odeon, Brighton Centre and beach and serving authentic food up to 1.30am, Latin Lounge, could be on the verge of filling a niche. They even serve breakfast, which might come in handy if on my next visit (as planned) I get rebellious and wash down my tapas with the intriguing ‘Che’s Revolution’ and need a pick-me-up the morning after.

APRIL 2011 BUSINESS AND ACUMEN

THE MEDIA BIZ —WITH JOSH LITTLE

PROTECTING YOUR B[R]AND Creating a brand In order to be a successful band you need to create a brand. The name you choose is therefore very important. A distinctive and memorable name, combined with a recognisable logo and a good product (the band itself), should set you off on the right track to establishing a successful brand. Protecting the brand If you are going to spend a lot of time and money developing as an artist and promoting your brand then you want to be sure that you have the exclusive right to use your name and logo and that nobody else is using it already. What bands often overlook is any kind of protection of the band name. So what kinds of protection are there?

Copyright Any artwork that you create is automatically protected by copyright as soon as you ‘record it’. Essentially what this means is that as soon as your idea for the artwork is committed in a permanent form (e.g. on paper/computer etc.), you become the legal owner of the work and of the intellectual property rights in

the work. This only applies if you actually created the artwork and did not simply copy somebody else’s work. The downside of copyright is that if you ever want to rely on it for protection, you have to prove that you created the artwork before anybody else (which can be tricky if you don’t have a date-stamped copy of the work). Another drawback is that names are not protected by copyright.

Trademark A much better way of protecting your band name and logo is to register them as a trademark. This is an inexpensive process and means that the name and logo are placed on a register which is available for all to see. Registration notifies the world that you own that band name

and logo and that nobody else is allowed to use it without your permission. Trademarks are territory specific, so it is important to register in any country that you intend to market your brand.

Passing off If you don’t have a registered trademark and somebody does start using your logo, then your only option is to sue them for ‘passing off’. Passing off requires three things. First you must prove that your goods or services have become well known. Secondly, you must show that the person you are accusing has misled the public into believing that their product or service is connected to your product or service. Finally, you need to show that as a result of this, you have

suffered some sort of damage. Clearly, this can be a time consuming and expensive process.

What you should do It is important to protect your brand as early in your career as possible. A trademark law specialist can arrange the registration of your trademark for a relatively small fee. In the long run this fee will seem like exceptional value for money when the alternative would be potentially lengthy and costly legal proceedings to prove passing off. A final consideration is that with the growing importance of the internet, it is also highly advisable to buy your band name as a domain name so that others cannot take advantage of your very valuable internet traffic.
