AUGUST 2013

WOW! Now that’s what I call a real summer! Sales of sun-cream, shorts and those little knotted hankies must be going through the roof. We’ve got 99 problems, but finding Ship Beach ‘aint one. It’s easy, just look for the mountain of litter. Seriously though, we hope none of you are suffering the effects of food poisoning from your al-fresco cooking sessions. Also please remember not to leave your dog in the car during the scorching weather, there’s no way the confines of a sunblasted car are hot enough to ensure your pet is cooked thoroughly enough to eat… FREESTYLERS INTERVIEW - PAGE 24

AUGUST So who’s been feeling hot and bothered recently? With any luck we’ll be topping up our tans (and marvelling at British society’s chronic inability to deal with any weather more portentous than a breeze or light drizzle) for a few more weeks yet. If not, then August brings plenty of events that will certainly heat up the City anyway. As ever, our World famous Pride weekend is bringing a touch of colour and magic to the town on Sat 3 – Sun 4 August, with a noisy and proud celebration of the Brighton’s wonderful LGBT communities. A little more polite, and a lot more sedate, is the return of Brunswick festival on Sat 17 – Sun 18 this month. The Championship gets properly under way on Sat 03, seeing a welcome shift in focus for Brighton and Hove Albion FC. After failing to secure top-flight promotion, embarrassed by the controversy surrounding “Poo-Gate” and Gus Poyet’s dismissal, the squad has been reinforced and is hopefully looking to show new manager, former Barcelona youth coach Oscar Garcia, what they can achieve this season. For this issue, we’ve grabbed an interview with new Alt-Rock contenders Whales in Cubicles, and talked to breakbeat heavyweights Freestylers about the nature of being truly underground. Elsewhere, we take a look at August Bank Holiday manoeuvres for thousands of scooter-heads as they come down for the annual Mod Weekender. Back in the day the pitched battles between Mods and Rockers may have made the establishment wonder if this signalled the imminent breakdown of British society, but we like to think they still put all their rubbish in the bins.

BRUNSWICK FESTIVAL 11 August Brunswick Festival 2013 is offering a variety of FREE events and activities this August. This genteel celebration of the diverse Brunswick community is one of the City’s longest running festivals, growing from a picnic to spanning two weekends of events. Sun 11 August is Rural Day. It brings the countryside to the St. Anne’s Well Gardens to raise awareness of the environment with arts, crafts and conservation stalls. Sat 17 - Sun 18 Aug sees Brunswick Festival in the Square, a lazy weekend of live music, dance, street theatre, circus, healing, stalls, food and beer. It’s a fun for all the family.

TWOTHREEFOUR Green Door Store 3 - 4 August If you’ve not been swept away by Pride fever, then why not check out mini festival TWOTHREEFOUR? The Green Door Store have decided that it is about time that they celebrate the local talent that has supported them over the last two years. On Sat 3 – Sun 4 Aug this free event will see 22 bands will be gathering to celebrate the local music scene. Amongst the acts getting packed in are: The Hundredth Anniversary, Dog In The Snow (solo), Written In Waters, Animal Language, The New Union, Faux Flux, Birkwin Jersey, GAPS, Foreign Skin, Us Baby Bear Bones. Enough said!

MUSIC PREVIEWS BY BRAD MIDDLETON

MONSTER MAGNET Concorde2 // Monday 5 Aug

Dope fiends of the highest order play some of the best stoner/desert rock you will ever have heard. Their break-through album, 1995’s Dopes to Infinity, is one of the finest examples of the genre you can possibly hear and this is their first show in our town for a long time so get down and show your support for this great band. £18adv

BLACK UHURU + SAMSARA Concorde 2 // Tuesday 13 Aug

WHALES IN CUBICLES SEE INTERVIEW P.8

Black Uhuru is one of the most popular reggae acts of all-time and have released some of the seminal work of the entire genre. They came together in the late 1970s and with the rhythm section of Sly & Robbie providing the impetus they went on to make some of the best music from the then burgeoning Jamaican scene. Their live shows are the stuff of legend and with local heads Samsara being in support this should be a smokers delight! £17.50adv

PATTI SMITH

PATTI SMITH & TONY SHANAHAN St. George’s Church // Friday 9 Aug

THE PARKINSONS + ATOMIC SUPLEX Prince Albert // Friday 9 Aug

What could I possibly add to all the stuff already written about Patti Smith that hasn’t been written a million times before? Well, not a lot but seeing as she has been one of the most prolific artists of her time I think it’s fair. All I can say is that on the couple of occasions I’ve seen Patti live she always put on a spell-binding show full of literary rock and interesting talk. If you have any belief that music can still be considered an art form then this is a show you must go to. £28adv

This promises to be one of the best punk shows of the year in the sweaty confines of the Prince Albert with Stay Sick and Punker Bunker coming together to give us not just one great punk band from London but two! The Parkinsons came to England in 2000 to gig from Portugal, loved it so much and were greeted with such adoration that they decided to stay and over the course of this century have built a reputation for being a great live spectacle. I was lucky enough to witness Atomic Suplex at the Hobgoblin many years ago and was dumbfounded at their sheer brutality and insane stage antics and by the number of people rushing to the garden to escape their frenzied noise! £6.50 adv

DIE! DIE! DIE + WHALES IN CUBICLES Sticky Mike’s // Friday 16 Aug

AT THE EDGE OF THE SEA FESTIVAL Concorde 2 // Saturday 24 Aug

DDD are a noise-pop band from New Zealand who’ve made a bit of impact since their formation in 2003. Support comes from one of our favourite London indie-rockers, the impressively named Whales in Cubicles who take influences from the likes of Pavement. For more on them, read our short little chat with the guys elsewhere in this issue. £5adv

The Wedding Present return for their now annual jaunt down at the Concorde 2 and this year continues the fine tradition of good line-ups. As always the Weddoes take centre-stage but this year also sees Flying Wing, Terry De Castro and The Brownies appearing on Day 1 and yet more delights on Day 2. Starting at 1pm this offers a good alternative to the whole corporate behemoth that is now Reading and Leeds for us too old or too lazy and into great guitar music.

BN1 CHATS WITH...

WHALES IN CUBICLES

After twenty years, the power and influence of Nineties’ alternative rock has barely been beaten, offering hordes of middle-aged musos to justifiably declare: “It’s not as good as it used to be!” The passion, love of dynamics and atmospherics, plus a healthy income from T-shirt sales propelled the cream of these bands into mild-mannered superstardom, feeding the need for a new wave of rock stars whose songs were raw, powerful and direct. Then the rot set in. Those bands started buying drum machines and sequencers or began constructing increasingly self-indulgent albums, meanwhile the fans, fickle as ever, moved onto the next big things, like superclubbing or Britpop. So when music bloggers began mentioning Whales In Cubicles, a band busting out of the East London rock scene with songs that sounded like The Pixies, Pavement and Jeff Buckley, it had scores of wistful 30-somethings, or kids seeking a modern twist on the alt-rock sound, sitting up and taking notice. But don’t get too comfortable, the band aren’t about to let themselves get tied to any musical genre or era. “I get that we are compared to a lot of bands in the Nineties. When you listen to the record you won’t say: ‘Why this sounds like a Nineties band!’ OK, the new single may a little, but it doesn’t define the band’s sound,” the band’s frontman, and songwriter, Stef Bernadi concedes. “We were listening to a lot of those bands when we first got together, but we didn’t set out to sound like them. It’s like the Pixies were the band we listened to in the van. If you hung out with us on tour you’d realise that we don’t listen to that music alone. A lot of the bands I consider Nineties were already operating in the Eighties.” Swelling guitars and garage rock drums all herald the signs of the long awaited revival for the sorely missed alt-rock sound, short sharp chunks of immense catchiness. Thanks to better technology at their disposal and a surplus of talent it’s a given that they could

wipe the floor of many of the Nineties indie offerings, but Bernadi has other ideas as to where the band’s direction lies. “We’re one of those bands that don’t want to stick anything more than it’s necessary to. Even if you listen to this album you’ll think it’s a bit frantic in the choice of songs and sounds, it’s because there’s so many things that we can do, it just seems a bit reductive to stick to one formula. There’s no way of knowing of what the future holds in terms of song writing, but we already know what the next album will sound like.” So is the band worried, in a time full of interference with bands’ directions, that the music media and industry is placing constrictive tags upon them? “You get the classic A&R types that come to a bunch of twenty year olds, who have just started a band, and they give them a formula and they only exist within certain parameters. It’s detrimental to the music when someone comes in and does that. You just go on Youtube, discover some young-blood that can sing. Sometimes it does work and you get some people with real talent.” Soon the band are headed to Brighton for a gig at Sticky Mike’s, despite Stef’s guitar getting lifted by a local scally after their gig last year, as part of a tour intended to drum up even more interest in the release of their debut album, on London label Young and Lost Club, In the autumn. So what is the album going to sound like? “Sonically it’s heavy at times, but it’s really accessible and sweet. We don’t set out to get this ‘ommph’ sound that will blow everyone away. We’re not one of those bands. I guess if you come to our shows there will be moments when you want to put your fingers in your ears, but that’s only because that’s what we’re into at the moment.” “It’s going to have some really long songs on there, plus some really short ones. It’s a bit extreme in that sense. We’re not really trying to squeeze a pop song into a long format, and vice versa. There’s quite a lot of different stuff on there.

“I’m influenced by what I see, but if you’re talking about sound and song form and lyrical content then I really respect Mark Kozelek from Red House Painters. Or Elliot Smith is another one that I listened to a lot in the Nineties.” The band takes their moniker from a song by Andrew Bird, what are we supposed to make of this strange name?

“It’s the contradiction or impossibility of having a whale in a cubicle. It’s just good imagery for me, because when you look around everything is a contradiction. It feels like we are living as whales in cubicles. Look at weddings, what a ridiculous thing to do. But we do it, because it makes sense and it keeps society going.”

So what lies in store for this energetic four-piece? With any luck it’ll at least involve being fawned over by the Music press, then on to getting launched into the charts. So far they’ve been hitting every item on our imaginary wish-list for rock greatness. You want tunes full of frank Indie energy? Check! How about a songwriter that’s constantly shifting objectives? Check! Blowing up London in a video? Check! Daniel Radcliffe praising the single We Never Win? Errm…, check?! That only adds to Whales In Cubicles’ magic. carlett’s Roses are a seven-piece pop/ska band from South London who will be playing at this year’s Pride. They term their music “Happy Heartbreakers” - sad songs to happy beats. The band comprises Daniel on guitar, Ryan, Scarlett and Ollie on vocals and Oliver on bass, starting as a four-piece four years ago before adding on drums, sax and bass. “We’ve been working really hard for ages, but have really felt it come together in the past couple of years,” says Ryan.

The band have opened for quite a few big names - Jessie J and Scouting for Girls to name just two. This was a big experience for the band: “Supporting these artists was just incredible. Manchester Pride was a highlight,” says Ryan. “To open the weekend, and no one has a clue who you are, and get such an incredible response was amazing. It just made us more confident and believe we can do this.”

“We’re just about to release our EP, Bloomin’, at the end of July, which we are so excited about! We’re just working on the album now, writing more songs, and gigging all over.”

Scarlett’s Roses are looking forward to their Pride appearance. “After playing Manchester Pride, it definitely opened us up to a bigger market. As a gay man myself, it’s important for us that we reach out to as many people as we possibly can, and the more men the better, haha!”

The band draw on a range of influences for their musical style. “Amy Winehouse has had the biggest impact, both musically and lyrically,” explains Ryan. “Her honesty is very inspiring. And that voice...! We also draw influences from bands like The Specials and Reel Big Fish. And Scarlett adores Britney!”

So why do the band think Pride is still important? “To avoid sounding corny, it’s all about equality and love. Although today being gay is a lot more acceptable, there are still certain areas where it’s not. Any love should be celebrated, and the fact that Pride is doing that speaks volumes.”

Scarlett’s Roses’ songs sound pretty honest and heartfelt and cover a lot of everyday life topics people can easily relate to – as it turns out, they are are they true tales from the heart.

Ryan concludes: “We are so excited about Brighton Pride and spreading our music all over. We want to get the world dancing!” Which sounds like a pretty good goal to us.

“Heartache is both devastating and inspiring, and that’s a lot of where I draw the lyrics from. For us, it’s really important they we say ‘Oi! You broke my heart, you bastard!’ but to a really upbeat, positive sound that people can dance to.”

FREESTYLERS By combining a love of Hip-Hop and Electro with a knack for making bass boom just a little louder, Freestylers have been dominating the UK underground music scene for the last 15 years. Core members Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey operate as both a live band and DJs, depending on how they fancy rocking the dancefloor that night, constantly pushing boundaries in both their productions and performances, by playing fresh, underground and energetic tunes that never attempt to be trendy or fashionable for the sake of it. “In my DJ set I’ll play anything, so long as it’s good. That’s the essence of what the Freestylers have been about. I’ve always believe in doing your own thing, that’s the best way of making music,” Aston Harvey tells us, during a break in the middle of rehearsals for their live show. “People say to me: “Why don’t you make some Pop Music? But as kid I never listened to it, it just has no interest for me. I guess that’s where the money is, but I’ve never been turned on by it.” Despite Harvey’s protestations, the band’s new album The Coming Storm is crammed full of tunes that have potential for chart success. Providing some fresh inspiration for these recordings was new addition to their production team, Chris Bishop from Stereo:Type, as they cover almost every corner of the Bass Music gamut. The album sees them move away from the familiar, sample-heavy production they’re known for and concentrate on predominantly original sounds. Irwin Sparks pops up on the very accessible Yours to Waste, suggesting having little regard for mass appeal doesn’t preclude you from having an ear for a catchy tune. Laura Steel provides some amazing vocals on the UK Bass influenced Falling, whilst Hip-House alumni Fast Eddie gets involved on the acid-tinged The Sound. Even the Dubstep and Jungle soaked title track wouldn’t seem out of place in a BBC ‘Yoof TV’ promo.

This album’s fairly sample-free. I wouldn’t mind doing an album that’s just full of samples. As a kid, what made me want to make music was old school Hip-Hop and House, and a fusion of the two is what bore Hardcore and Rave music. It was speeding up Hip-Hop breaks and using sounds from Belgian Techno records or early Garage records from Chicago.

HEADLINE

Despite the success of their breakthrough single Push Up, the inclusion of their tunes on several soundtracks and gathering massive crowds at all the world’s biggest festivals and nightclubs, the band remain resolutely underground. It seems ‘selling out’ in the light of enormous public demand for commercial dance acts, or EDM as it’s been branded now, is not on their agenda. “You could hate on these people, but for every hater there’s of millions of lovers. David Guetta probably gets loads of hate, but why’s he so successful? Because there’s many more thousands of people that love than hate him. But some of these kids are so off their nut they don’t really care. “The whole EDM thing is just a progression of Trance. That was always the biggest form of Dance music. You know what? I hate the term EDM. When we were touring in the Sates in 99, it was called Electronica. That was what they called anything that wasn’t Rock or Hip-Hop.” Right now Freestylers are heading back on the road with their full band, to bring the new album into the live arena, including a headline slot at Over the Moon Festival in East Sussex, on Sat 14 Sept. It’s a quandary a band playing such a captivating fusion of Breaks, Dub and Jungle can still manage to remain outside the radar of the average music fan, especially when you consider how much their tunes have shaped UK Dance Music. “Sometimes I equate music to these trendy restaurants. You go there, they’re really expensive, but they’re really shit. But you think it must be good, because it’s expensive and it’s got a name to it. Music is all about branding. it’s not even to do with how good the music is, it’s just how good you are at branding and social media. You can get really successful if you’re good at that. “I’d like a piece of the pie to tell you the truth. But there’s something in my brain that stops me from liking big music that appeals to the masses. I wish Breakbeat would appeal to the same amount of people. I know it would, but it doesn’t seem to be seen in the same light somehow.”

Freestylers will be smashing it at Over the Moon Festival, in East Sussex, on Sat 14 Sept. Their new album, The Coming Storm, is out now on Rub A Duck Records. www.freestylersmusic.co.uk

BENT DOUBLE - PRIDE Komedia // 4 Aug

PERSONAL TRIUMPH Caroline Of Brunswick // 14 Aug

There’s no escaping Pride and its satellite celebrations this month. Those of you up for a laugh after Sunday’s epic street party should look no further than Bent Double’s Pride Special on Sun 04 Aug. An irreverent night of fun and frolics, hosted by the splendid Julie Jepson (as Zoe Lyons is up in Edinburgh for something), this month’s headliner is the Grand Duchess of all attention-whores, the shameless and stunning Jonathan Mayor. Backing him up is the wonderfully sardonic Tiffany Stevenson (we still can’t figure if she’s a comic genius or simply disinterested) and the loveably geeky Iszi Lawrence.

Exploring the theme of chasing our dreams, how we measure personal pleasure rating and the challenges of everyday life, Julie Jepson presents Personal Triumph on Weds 14 Aug at Caroline Of Brunswick. Local resident Julie can usually be spotted compeering comedy nights all over the City, she also books and hosts the Caroline‘s hugely popular monthly comedy club funnyhaha. She now takes comic inspiration from a motorcycle crash she suffered, and its physical, emotional and economic consequences, for her third solo show, which will try and put her unconventional personal world view into a form us mere humans can appreciate.

THE LIPSINKERS Marlborough Theatre // 3 Aug

BRIGHTON COMEDY FESTIVAL Dome, T.O.M and Komedia // October

We weren’t sure where to place this preview, but we can’t let August go by without mentioning The LipSinkers’ show at Marlborough Theatre on Sat 3rd Aug. There’s a genuine air of abject lunacy when these five drags start comically miming to other people’s songs, its little wonder they’re one of the most-cherished acts on the London circuit. Making a triumphantly shambolic return for Brighton Pride, they’ve got new skits, classic hits and quite realistic looking bits. Make sure you catch them, just don’t tell Mama… The night’s special host is Brighton’s inimitable queen of eccentric song: Lorraine Bowen.

We know it’s a little early, but we don’t want you scratching your heads in October wondering how you get tickets for the Brighton Comedy Festival! Now in its twelfth year, the festival brings some of the best live comedy in the world to Brighton Dome, The Old Market and Komedia. With over 70 performances across 16 days, Jason Manford, Milton Jones, Sean Lock, Nina Conti, Andy Parsons, Paul Merton, Russell Kane, Lucy Porter, Alexei Sayle, Doc Brown, Stewart Lee, Roisin Conaty and Jimmy Carr are just a few of the comics that will gagging for it this year. www.brightoncomedyfestival.com

D O M E H T

R E D N E WEEK

Any smartly dressed, scooter riding, bright young thing should already know what they’re doing on August Bank Holiday - getting down to Brighton for the Mod Weekender. Almost 50 years ago Brighton played host to a startling new cultural development. Thousands of young people, the label ‘Teenager’ barely a decade old itself, were taking full advantage of the freedoms cheap post-war transport offered by travelling to seaside resorts around the country. These mass awaydays often saw the kids finding themselves split into two tribes: The Rockers, whose identity was surrounded around motorcycling, and the Mods, all obsessed by fashion, scooters and modern Ska, Soul and R&B music. Inevitably clashes occurred amongst the two profoundly different scenes, which evolved into headline grabbing street battles. There have been clashes between different groups throughout history, but nothing had been recorded on this scale. The media had a field day, reporting on the imminent breakdown of society with all the moral outrage it could muster, simultaneously bribing the visiting youths to cause trouble to further perpetuate the story. The following decade saw Quadrophenia, an epic celebration of the events in Brighton of the mid-Sixties, starring Phil Daniels, Leslie Ash and a youthful Ray Winstone. This did little to dispel the misconception of the Mods being anything other than pillpopping violent thugs, but it still continues to bring the scene to the attention of subsequent generations, all looking for a movement that’s just a little bit more stylish than the rest. August Bank Holiday is still a firm fixture in the Brighton calendar, with thousands of contemporary Mods travelling to the scene’s spiritual home. A scooter rally, organised by The New Untouchables – an organisation devoted to promoting ‘21st Century Modernist and Sixties Inspired Underground Music Culture’ is the centrepiece of the weekend, with Mods from all over Europe converging on the Volks Tavern on Saturday and Sunday to enjoy live bands, a scooter competition and open decks DJ sessions, all rounded off

24 - 26 AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY by Sunday’s cruise along the coastline. The Volks Tavern also plays host to the ‘Sounds of the Birdcage’ exhibition, featuring rare Action memorabilia from the book about the legendary 60’s Mod band, and a market selling records, vintage and bespoke clothes, art and memorabilia. Across the weekend’s evenings events are at Komedia Theatre where the sound system will be getting a workout from the UK’s best Mod DJs, all spinning underground 60’s dance gems to delight the massed scooter-heads. Also on Sun 25 Aug, Big Screen - Brighton’s free beachfront cinema are presenting a very special preview performance of All Or Nothing - The Mod Musical, ahead of its UK tour in Spring 2014. Written by Carol Harrison, it looks back at the life and music of the quintessential Mod band, the Small Faces. With a glittering cast including British film star Danny Dyer (Human Traffic, Football Factory, The Business) popular soap star John Altman (Quadrophenia, Eastenders) and award winning actress/ writer Carol Harrison (Eastenders, London’s Burning, Human Traffic), the film is an exciting, poignant, tale of four charismatic young kids who became the stuff of Rock ‘n’ Roll legend, and whose raw, soulful sound inspired a whole new generation of musicians, not to mention millions of fans. This special Mod themed evening also features live music, followed by a screening of the iconic Mod movie Quadrophenia. www.newuntouchables.com www.brightonsbigscreen.com

ARTS THE PRINCE ALBERT ICONS MURAL A three storey mural, depicting some history’s greatest rock icons, has been painted on the side of one of Brighton’s most iconic pubs. What originally started as a single image of broadcaster John Peel, has now expanded to cover the entire of the Prince Albert’s west side with 25 of the mysic industries best loved and most inspirational stars. Originally conceived 10 years ago, landlord Chris Steward got together with street artists Req and SinnaOne to ensure the Albert’s outer wall reflected the pub’s status as one of the City’s leading music venues. So far we’ve spotted Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Donna Summer, Johnny Cash, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Dusty Springfield, Frank Sidebottom, Joe Strummer, Bob Marley, John Peel, Mark Bolan, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Phil Lynott, George Harrison, James Brown and Freddie Mercury amongst the stars immortalised in spray paint. Can you name the others?

MICHAEL BAROLET

WE ARE ART PEOPLE

Acclaimed photographer Michael Barolet takes over Space @ Create on Thu 1 Aug for a month. Focusing on what he terms the most significant elements of his life, his homeland, family and his closest friends, this haunting and truthful work strives to be a simple representation of the world in front of the lens. Silver and Carbon, primarily a collection of twenty-five silver gelatin contact prints, will also show a series of enlarged photocopies alongside the hand printed silver prints. This unique juxtaposition of printing techniques will showcase what Barlolet describes as “one of the most pure and sharp forms of photographic printing”

Here’s an exciting addition to Brighton’s vibrant art scene. The first We Are Art People - Originals and Prints Exhibition takes place from 30 Aug until 1 Sept, at The Naked Eye Gallery on Farm Mews. Representing artists from as far afield as Japan and the USA, the event features a little of everything, from Sculpture to Comic Art and Portraiture to Digital Artists, including work by regular BN1 contributor (Metal Made Flesh), Simeon Aston. Other artists, displaying their incredible talent include BP Portrait Awards 2nd place runner up - Alan Coulson, Hollywood animator Cinzia Angelini and illustrator Liam Brazier. www.weareartpeople.blogspot.co.uk

PRIVATES ON PARADE Peter Nichols’s hilarious National Service ‘memoirs’ comes to the Theatre Royal on Thu 22 - Sat 31 Aug. It’s 1948. Peace reigns in Britain, but in South East Asia the members of the Army’s The Song and Dance Unit South East Asia, S.A.D.U.S.E.A. are stuck entertaining our troops. Jason Sutton (better known as Miss Jason) plays cross-dressing Acting Captain Terri Dennis, as he romps his way through the jungle giving us performances as Marlene Dietrich, Vera Lynn, Carmen Miranda and Noel Coward, in a reality where laughter meets death and shy, sexually inexperienced National Service lads become men.

9 TO 5 Who doesn’t love Dolly Parton’s 9 To 5 in this city? Obviously Brighton isn’t an average place, but it will provide a welcoming stop for when 9 To 5 The Musical comes to the Theatre Royal on Mon 05 - Sat 10 Aug. This new musical comedy, based on the hit film, sees three office workers turning the tables on a lying, sexist and egotistical boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn there’s nothing they can’t do. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, it’s about teaming up and taking care of business in a man’s world.

FILM

BACKTRACK: HORROR IN THE HEATWAVE By Wayne Imms

Backtrack is a horror film that I’ve been aware of for many months, as a friend of mine, sound designer and recordist, Kirstie Howell, is playing a key part in the making of it. So, I’ve been looking forward to hearing more about it and following its progress. Made by a mainly young team from Brighton-based production company, Substantial Films, it’s largely a psychological horror about a group of friends’ supernatural and sinister escapades. Backtrack has been mainly shot on the South Downs during two weeks of the heatwave in July. I interviewed the feature film’s highly committed and passionate director, Tom Sands, as the arduous and ambitious shoot was coming to a close. How did Backtrack come about? I spent most of 2012 making corporate videos and commercials, following two years of directing documentaries. My regular DoP (Director of Photography), Haydn West, suggested we make a feature film with no budget, rather than waiting for someone to come to us, after we’d slaved away on commercials for 10 years. I was rather taken with that idea. My dad, Mick, is a screenwriter and I’ve worked with him regularly since I was 19. So we all put our heads together and came up with Backtrack. Haydn brought the South Downs, Mick added regression and I dropped in the Nazi element! That was in October and Mick knocked out a first draft in 11 days (determined to beat Joe Ezterhas’ record for Basic Instinct) – although there have been 16 more since then! As the director, were there any particular influences that have formed your vision regarding the making of the film? I’ve come to realise that I don’t have any favourite directors. I only have favourite films. It’s rare that I love to listen to an album all the way through. In the same way, I’m not influenced by a particular genre, director or movement. If a film moves me, then I am satisfied. The purpose of cinema is to move people and the purpose of moving people is to remind them of their humanity. There were moments during prep where I was having serious anxiety that I hadn’t established what my influences were and that I hadn’t researched my genre (I’m

not into horror films). But in the end I had to realise that I’m telling a story; I have to go with my gut and tell the story to maximum effect. This means that it will lean more towards a psychological thriller, with elements of horror. However, I did define the main films that influenced me on Backtrack: Silence of the Lambs, Frantic, Se7en, Where Eagles Dare, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Hitchcock, in general (though more as a philosophy, rather than any particular stylistic reference), and Come and See. You’ve been filming at locations around the South Downs area. How was the shoot, and what particular challenges did you have to overcome? Our main obstacle was supposed to be the weather and I spent two hours hunting down 4-inch electrical tape, so that we could effectively waterproof the camera. But, destiny is with us! And the weather only turned today – our last day of outdoor filming. The fact that we have no money has been difficult. Of course, we need all the basics: petrol, food, toilets. All of this has been tough and it detracts from the film-making. But Backtrack is a micro budget film and you have to embrace it and sort it out. Telling people that they have to take a shit in a plastic bucket disguised as a camping toilet can sometimes be tough, after they’ve just pulled together to give you a great scene! Getting permissions was another issue. For example, we had to shoot 7 pages on Devil’s Dyke and we only had permission to film from 9am to 1pm. That was a killer. I am backed up by an amazingly willing and efficient crew and, so far, we’ve managed to pull it out of the bag. Did anything about the process of filming change what was envisaged within the script? I have had to compromise on every shot that I ever envisaged. But mostly, I think, that has served the story. I can finally see the diving logic of making documentaries for two years before this! The cast always bring new elements to scenes, which you haven’t considered and this is always a pleasant surprise. Sum up the overall experience of filming Backtrack and describe the spirit you encountered within the cast and crew.

BACKTRACK CREW ON DEVILS DYKE

Filming Backtrack has been the defining moment of my life so far. I feel like I’m surrounded by such talent that every day on set is a joy. Shooting something so dark means the set is always full of laughter. As a highly enthusiastic director in your mid- twenties, is overseeing a production such as this especially ambitious? Yes. I have never experienced such stress. Today, we were shooting in a bar in Brighton, and Phil, who is our 1st AD (Assistant Director), tells me that we have 20 minutes to shoot a 2 minute scene. I look around and both the actors aren’t in costume, they’re not made up and the lighting isn’t finished yet. I sat down and held out my hand and noticed that it was shaking like a leaf. Basically, I’m panicking all day. But it usually works out fine. Julian Glover starts on Monday and I am still crapping myself about this. Julian Glover is a distinguished actor, best known for villainous roles in films such as The Empire Strikes Back, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and For Your Eyes Only, and television series’, such as Game of Thrones, Doctor Who and The Avengers. I’m impressed that they have him on board. Backtrack is, of course, a psychological horror film. Can you elaborate on this element? Also, despite this, I understand that it’s rather graphic in its visual horror, as it were. So, would it be fair to say that it wouldn’t be for the particularly faint-hearted?

Backtrack started out as a horror film with elements of torture porn (key examples of the controversial “torture porn” genre include Saw and Hostel). I don’t think I could deliver that. What I probably can deliver is a thoroughly disturbing psychological horror with a bit a bit of violence. Though I still hope to have everyone squirming in their seats! Give us an insight into the post production aspect of the film. Sum up what this will entail. I want to have the film finished by December, which means a five week edit (very ambitious). So first we have to look at the rushes, establish if we have all the shots we need, then go into the black hole of the edit, watch the horror of the first assemble and then (hopefully) sit back as the film slowly comes into focus. And then we hand over to sound, music, visual effects and grading and everything gets more and more polished. Hopefully, it’s all downhill from the first assemble. Finally, give us an idea of your plans for Backtrack once completed. We already have a couple of sales agents lined up to look at the film. Hopefully, we’ll finish in December and we’ll blow everyone away and get a distribution deal. But if not, we’ll do the festival circuit and ‘four wall’ it - essentially tour the film round cinemas ourselves. After all this work, I want people to see it, whichever way! www.backtrackfilm.com

After cementing their reputation in London with several successful establishments the Craft flexed their wings and landed in Brighton. PLAYGROUP FESTIVAL 2013

AUGUST 16-18 BY KAYE INGLIS The fourth annual Playgroup Festival takes place from August 16-18 at a secret new location (the only clue being it is about 25 minutes from Brighton). Run by Playgroup, a small and dedicated collective who also run the Blind Tiger in Brighton, the festival is shrouded in mystery yet sure to be fun for the whole family. Unlike many smaller festivals, which increase the number of tickets available year-on-year, the Playgroup team has decided to celebrate the intimateness of earlier festivals and for this reason there are only 500 tickets available for the weekend. Tickets have, unsurprisingly, sold out already. A Playgroup spokesperson explained the reasoning behind this decision: “We decided that after three years of Playgroup Festival, we’d rather run something that doesn’t try to compete with other events or get bigger and bigger by the season, we wanted something that we knew our friends would come to perform and participate in every year and something that we can be really proud of while getting on with the rest of our lives – we think this is it.” The only trouble with secret parties is that the line-up remains closely-guarded. What we can say for sure is that there will be lots of live music in a huge selection of genres, from gypsy swing to dubstep, drum and bass to jazz, rock and roll to beatboxing, plus carnival bands, rockabilly, acoustic and ambient acts to name just a few.

If past events are anything to go by, the line-up will be eclectic and top-notch in equal measure. At the 2012 Playgroup Festival there was original hip-hop courtesy of The Herbaliser, comedy bro-step from High Rankin and DJ sets from Hidden Orchestra, DJ Yoda and Resonators. There are also lots of walkabout performances, storytellers and installation artists, cabaret performances and DJs. Festival goers are eagerly encouraged to take part and interact with performers – a fancy dress mission will be mailed out to ticket holders before the event kicks off so that everyone can dress up, turn up and enjoy the fun. Playgroup prides itself on being family-friendly, selling discounted tickets for under 12s and teenagers, and plenty of the activities will be great for children of all ages. Face painting and dressing up is great for children and adults alike, and there’s dedicated family and quiet area camping for those who like to get their beauty sleep before the day’s festivities. If you need a festival chill-out (and let’s face it, who doesn’t every now and then?) expect peaceful areas where you can join in with yoga and other relaxing activities. A real communal feel is encouraged – there’s one big camp fire for everyone to cook and toast marshmallows around, and friendly faces abound from every corner. You can find out more about the festival, and check out some of the previous years’ superb fancy dress costumes, by visiting the website www.playgroupfestival.com

THE SECRET GARDEN PARTY 2013 REVIEW The Secret Garden Party 2013 exceeded all expectations this year with a plethora of hedonistic fun in every corner, extravagant costumes (this year’s theme: Superstition), outlandish parties in the woods and show-stopping fireworks and light displays across the picturesque lake… ending with the centre stage Pirate Ship exploding in a ball of flames! As always the festival had an abundance of wild and wacky people, feeding the liberal sensibilities with their creative and utterly bizarre outfits, some becoming one with nature and our resident contributors Dr Simpo and Pete Bennett making a real go of it. Along our travels we witnessed fire jugglers, mud wrestling, jousting and even a chap covered head to toe in tattoos (including his eyes!) Well… we managed to persuade Sir Mad-Alan (as the chap’s known) to place a rather large metal spike through his face, which attracted a wincing ‘cor-blimey’ crowd, including the SGP press team! 2ManyDJs and Faithless played almighty sets, energising their crowds, so even a brief rain storm could not deter them, Django Django blissed out with their awesome electronic neo-psychedelia and last minute replacement Goldie got down and dirty with his classic DnB choices at the Temple Of Boom. Highlights of the festival include catching Jarvis Cocker in the Black Cat tent doing some secret DJing, Public Service Broadcasting captivating the audience at the Where Wild Things Are stage, and a rather intoxicated man trying to hover across the lake. If you haven’t been before, early bird tickets for 2014 are on sale now and very much worth the mind-bending experience.

CIN CIN Saturday 13th July saw the official launch of a fantastic new addition to the Brighton street food and mobile catering scene called Cin Cin (pronounced ‘chin chin’). David Toscano, owner of Cin Cin, entertained a number of guests in Eaton Grove, Hove at the studio of local fashion accessories company, Boston and Boston. Cin Cin is a charming, red and cream 1972 vintage Fiat van that specialises in serving beautiful Italian antipasti and Prosecco – ‘bubbles and nibbles’ - at events in the South. The launch day was warm and sunny, perfect for lounging in the bespoke Cin Cin deckchairs while sipping on chilled Prosecco and devouring the wonderful Italian treats that were on offer. The antipasti were beautifully presented and served to guests on vintage-style trays and we were informed that for public events the bespoke menu can be offered in handy boxes for eating on the go. Inspired by his Italian heritage, David takes pride in using only the best produce for his authentic antipasti. The menu incorporated fresh olives, flavoursome cured meats and delicious Italian cheeses, all sourced from trusted independent suppliers in the UK such as Vallebona and the Fresh Olive Company. The launch menu consisted of some classic Italian favourites with innovative twists such as the Calabrese spicy salami on ‘music paper’ crispbread with crema di pecorino and the gorgeous Provolone Semistagionato served with a zingy lemon marmalade. Other nibbles on offer were perfectly made Arancini and a range of juicy, moreish olives including Gaeta from Lazio and a Nostraline variety from Tuscany.

Everyone was exceedingly happy; the food kept coming and the Prosecco kept flowing. Two varieties of Prosecco were on offer to us, sourced from Sussex wine merchants Hennings - a Casa Defra Frizzante, which was light and fruity with soft bubbles and a Di Paolo NV Frizzante that filled the nose with notes of apples, pears and ginger. Both were outstanding choices and went down a treat. You can catch Cin Cin at various events around Sussex this summer including Brighton’s Street Diner. The van is also available for hire at private events including fairs, festivals and weddings; this really would be the perfect addition to any wedding… the only problem is the van may just upstage the bride! www.cincin.co.uk / www.facebook.com/cincinuk www.twitter.com/cincinuk
