21st October 2015

On behalf of the BMX New Zealand Council I would like to welcome all members of the BMX Community, both competitors and supporting families, to the 2015 BMX New Zealand North Island Titles which are being hosted by the Central BMX Region, and held at the Taupo BMX Club track.

It is pleasing to see such a great entry list (783 entries from 665 riders) which shows that our wonderful sport is in a really good place at the moment. It is pleasing to see the more than 60 South Island riders that have made the trip up.

To those riders who have travelled from Australia to compete in the Test Team Events (Senior & Mighty 11), we trust that you will enjoy the experience and the kiwi hospitality. It is great to see these historical challenges still going after many years and I’m sure this weekend will be another close battle.

In preparing for these events there is much work that goes on behind the scenes which goes largely unnoticed and to that end our acknowledgement and appreciation is extended to the Central BMX Region and the Taupo BMX Club. Thank you for the time and effort you have put in preparing your facilities for these Titles.

To all the volunteers, and to those officials who are responsible for putting together the rosters, without your support these events simply wouldn’t happen so a big thank you goes out to you. Our sport should be very proud in the strength and ability of our very talented and well qualified volunteers and officials who staff these events making them run smoothly.

To the competitors, I hope that in these North Island Titles you achieve to your expectations, whether it is a North Island Title, a Test Team trophy, making the podium or reaching the final, ride hard, ride fair and particularly enjoy the experience.

This event see’s the retirement from officiating in New Zealand by Norm McCann. On behalf of BMXNZ I would like to say a big thank you to Norm for the many years of dedication he has put in to ensuring our race meetings run smoothly and all the systems that you have put in place to make this happen. You have left some very big shoes to fill…..

Finally at the conclusion of these North Island Titles, we wish you all a safe return journey to your homes and families.

All the very best and cheers,

CENTRAL REGION BMX ASSOCIATION

On behalf of the Central Region, welcome to Taupo for the 2015 BMX North Island Titles.

We very much appreciate and thank you for the effort made by riders, family and friends from all over NZ and our Australian visitors, here to support the Taupo BMX Club. It is exciting to see the rider numbers attending this event.

A very special welcome is extended to our Australian Test Teams riders, coaches and managers . The Mighty 11 and Senior Test Team racing is always a highlight of this event & I’m sure will prove to be as exciting as ever. Good luck to you all!

As you know, the planning and preparation involved to make this great event come together consumes many hours of peoples valuable time. I would like to acknowledge and thank the 2015 Norths CommitteeDarryll, Jane, Matt, Colin, Steve, Kate, Paul and Rick, the Taupo BMX Club Committee, particularly Anne Marie and all the hard workers that spent many hours at working bees.

The track is well groomed and ready for a great weekend of BMX racing. Thank you to the dedicated track team. I am sure you will agree it is in prime condition and will give us some fast race action.

To all the volunteers and BMXNZ Officials who without you these events wouldn’t run smoothly, thank you. The time and energy you put into our sport is greatly appreciated. We must not forget the financial commitment received from grant funders & sponsors, without you this event would not be possible to host.

I hope you all enjoy your time at this competition and achieve what you have trained so hard for. Good Luck. Race hard & race fair.

Cheers

Co-ordinator

History Of The Mighty 11s

The Mighty 11s is an international BMX competition. It started as a competition run by the Ipswich Club in Brisbane, Australia and BMXNZ.

Some 26 years ago, a rider in the Ipswich club was killed in a car accident. His mother gave the Ipswich club a trophy in his memory. The committee discussed just what to do with the trophy. It was decided to hold an invitation meeting for a junior class. The young child that was killed was eleven years old. The committee members discussed their options and formulated guidelines for the special event. However, when the date was discussed one committee member was reported to have said, 'It can't be in June, my son will miss out as he is twelve". So, 3 ages were put in a hat and one was drawn out. Thus was the birth of the Mighty Elevens.

A friendship between New Zealand's Errol Nelson and Neville Gray, the President of the Ipswich club, and their vision was key to beginning this tradition, which is now at the forefront of the Trans Tasman BMX exchange. Their vision was for cultural exchange visits along with the BMX racing, which they truly loved. The exchange was therefore timed to enable Trans Tasman competition for the Mighty Eleven title. It was a real cultural exchange in the early days. The riders were billeted with families in Australia. No parents were involved in anything other than meeting their children at the track during racing.

Every June Queens Birthday weekend and October Labour weekend riders who are eleven on the first day of June and the 20th of October respectively, from all over Australia and New Zealand are invited to compete against each other to establish the "mighty eleven" for that year. (Age on the day special class).

How could you improve BMX: Keep training the sprockets, so that they grow up knowing how to ride safely and properly. To help publicise the sport so more people join in and the sport grows. What does making this team mean to you: It means that I have another chance to represent NZ. My hard work is paying off.

Most memorable BMX moment: Christchurch Nationals 2008 because everyone in the final crashed except one girl. I got up and chased her and only just missed out on 1st but got NZ 2. Who would you like to thank: Mum and Dad, because I wouldn’t have this opportunity without them. My coaches Michael Bias and Doug Matheson for pushing me to improve. Athlete Development at Millennium Institute for helping me with strength and my injuries. North Harbour BMX Club always for supporting me.
