hat a month April was. On the same day that our venerable Queen celebrated her 90th birthday, a rock 'royal' from across the pond bowed out as Prince became the latest in a shockingly large list of premature celebrity deaths this year.

Just like fellow music legends Elvis and Michael Jackson, who also left us tragically early, Prince had a legendary lair where he escaped from the eyes of the world. It will be interesting to see if his Paisley Park Studios, just outside Minneapolis, will become another Graceland, visited by fans all hoping to understand the real story behind the superstar.

Laura Gelder According to 'trends expert' Daniel Levine, speaking at the Advantage ONLINE EDITOR Conference last month, 'telling stories' is now one of the top five trends in travel. People don’t just want ‘things’, they want ‘experiences’ which will translate into stories. It's a new currency that travellers can share and trade for travel kudos.

Travel companies are increasingly coming under pressure to create such 'experiences' for their trade partners too. These days the travel trade's events calendar is packed and a goodie bag with a free mouse mat doesn’t quite cut it if you want to fill your guest list.

The Israel Government Tourist Office pulled it out of the hat in April though, when they invited a magician to entertain agents (p 20) at its latest agent training event. You can also read about Destination New South Wales (p 18), who flew over a 'live artist' to try to recreate the state’s fabulous art and culture in front of agents in London and Manchester.

Of course, the simple things still sell best and our feature on South Africa (p8) shows that value for money never goes out of style.

In New Zealand, too, (p31) it's the primal appeal of the country's open roads which get our attention.

That leads nicely onto my last words, which are a sad goodbye to our own resident Kiwi, Tina-Lee McDougall, our resident Art Director, who for the past five years has been mostly responsible for the look and feel of this magazine. Good luck TL wherever your future travels may take you.

good scope Want a destination where you can live like a prince on an average holiday budget? Then recommend South Africa, where the range of incomparable attractions is more affordable than ever, says Steve Hartridge

I

suspected it had all gone rather quiet in the bush when Chris, our safari ranger, brought our 4x4 to a shuddering halt to point out a dung beetle pushing a black ball across the red-sand road ahead of us.

“Known as rollers, the beetle can bury dung 250 times heavier than itself in one night. Is there anything cooler than an insect pushing a pile of poo?” he enthuses.

The dung beetle’s display of body strength is impressive, in an insect sort of way, but in truth we have seen plenty of cooler things during our three-hour morning game drive in Pilanesberg, a game park that wraps around Sun City in South Africa’s malaria-free North West province.

Like the six lionesses and cubs sunning themselves under an acacia bush, their stomachs slumped on the dusty grass after the previous night’s kill and feed; and the trumpeting bull elephant that came charging out of the bush, prompting Chris’s quick, clunking shift into reverse; and like the two rhinos standing side by side, with a single yellow-billed oxpecker bird on the back of each, nibbling at ticks and other parasites.

There’s nothing unusual about seeing rhinos during a safari but this is a rare sight: a white rhino and the critically endangered black rhino standing side by side.

And that’s the thing about a game drive in the South African bush, there’s always something to shock and awe you – even if it arrives in the shape of a humble dung beetle.

Value proposition This is the best time to be selling South Africa in a generation. With the South African rand hovering around 20 to the pound, there are few other countries where the quality on offer is so affordable.

In fact, due to sterling’s strength, prices are

down by 20% in Cape Town compared to last year, according to the 2016 Worldwide Holiday Costs Barometer from Post Office Travel Money. Cape Town was the lowest-priced long haul destination surveyed and the third cheapest overall.

That value-proposition exchange rate means South Africa’s game lodges, wine estates, beach properties and golf courses represent fabulous value for money – a fact South African Tourism has been emphasising this year.

The tourism body got the message out through its ‘Value for Money’ campaign in February and March when it took over two London mainline trainline stations. Via a giant ‘vending machine’ it alerted commuters to the low cost of experiences and products available in South Africa. The initiative was supported through social media by the use of #RollingInRands.

Bigger programmes And tour operators are responding to the increased interest. Gold Medal has added ‘a record’ 48 new properties this year and next including Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape and Winchester Mansions and Southern Sun Cullinan in Cape Town.

Says Deborah Wadhams, Product Manager, South Africa, Gold Medal: “South Africa has always been good value for British visitors and the exchange rate really does work in the country’s favour. The choices there are almost overwhelming – from safaris to great restaurants to stunning beaches.”

Cape Town and trips to The Kruger National Park are the stand-out destinations from a sales point of view for Gold Medal so far this year.

The exchange rate is also having a big impact for Travel 2, says Rebecca Turner, Senior Product Manager, Asia and Oceania.

Beat around the bush: Straddling two of South Africa’s provinces, the Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest game reserves. Chances of spotting the ‘Big Five’ of lions, leopard, rhino, elephants and buffalo are good.

Kids on safari: Private game lodges offer Junior Ranger Experiences for children that introduce them to the wonders of nature.

Big lumps: South Africa is one of the best spots for whale-watching between May and September.

No bites: Several of South Africa’s ‘safari’ destinations are ‘malaria free’. Recommend the lodges of North West Province, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo (Waterberg area).

Shifting sands: South Africa is not known primarily as a ‘beach destination’ but across the country are Blue Flag beaches, family-friendly beaches, beaches with African penguins and beaches where you can dive, snorkel, waterski, kayak or canoe.

Budding choice: The desert flowers of Namaqualand in the Northern Cape are one of the world’s botanical wonders. They are at their blooming best during August and September.

Starry nights: The Northern Cape is something of a bucket list destination for amateur and professional stargazers alike. The town of Sutherland is home to the South African Large Telescope, one of the most gigantic in the world. It can record distant galaxies a billion times too faint for the human eye.

Train it: One of the major legacies of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is the hyper-modern and safe Gautrain, which runs from Johannesburg’s airport to stations in Sandton, Rosebank and Pretoria. It takes only 15 minutes to Sandton (compared with around 35 minutes by car) and costs a fraction of the price of a taxi.

Adrenalin rush: South Africa rivals New Zealand as the adventure capital of the world. Dive with the sharks at Gansbaai and abseil off Table Mountain in the Western Cape, or tube down Storm’s River Gorge, skydive in Grahamstown and take the plunge off the Bloukrans Bridge, the world’s highest bridge bungee, in the Eastern Cape.

Rocking it: South African rock art is among the best in the world and easily accessible, especially in the Drakensberg mountains of in KwaZulu-Natal.

What’s new  Airlines: Several carriers are responding to the rising demand by increasing capacity.

British Airways (batraveltrade.com) is generating plenty of excitement over its announcement it will launch three flights a week from Gatwick to Cape Town from November 24. Initially at least, it will operate to March 24 2017.

Thomas Cook Airlines (thomascookairlines.com) is also starting direct flights to Cape Town in December, running through to March next year.

Iberia (iberia.com) will fly from London to Johannesburg, via Madrid, from August and Norwegian (norwegian.com) is also planning to launch a route from London.  Accommodation: Leeu Estates (leeucollection. com), a five-star property, will open on the fringes of Franschhoek in the Cape Winelands on June 15. On 68 hectares of vineyards, landscaped gardens and fynbos (indigenous vegetation), it will feature 17 rooms, suites and cottages.

Gondwana (gondwanagr.co.za), a private game reserve along the Garden Route in the Western Cape, has added a new luxury lodge to its portfolio: Ulubisi House. It sleeps either six adults or four adults and four children and comes with a full complement of staff, including its own butler, chef and field guide. Whatever their ability level, a glimpse below the surface of the island's blue waters is a must for insights into the colourful marine life, while novice and experienced divers alike can explore caverns, shipwrecks and hot water vents.

For older kids looking for something new, suggest snuba diving with Kantours – a cross between scuba-diving and snorkelling.

Thrills Back on dry land, thrill-seeking teenagers might like to try their hand at powered paragliding, kiteboarding or flyboarding; while, at a calmer pace, families can play a round of golf together at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club under the 'kids golf for free' programme. Ireland – lyrical landscapes –

he land of saints and scholars may only be a stone’s throw away from the UK, but this lyrical island of music, myth and enchanting landscapes has a unique story for visitors to discover for themselves, writes Clare Walsh

This year marks the centenary of the Easter Rising – a defining moment in Ireland’s rise to independence – and events throughout the year are being staged to offer a comprehensive insight into the country’s complex history.

For example, Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, the final destination of 14 of the leaders of the Rising, is hosting an exhibition, tour and newly-refurbished courthouse, while O’Connell Street’s famous landmark, the GPO, opened a ‘Witness History Exhibition’ and visitor centre on March 25.

But the Easter Rising represents just a snapshot – albeit an important one – of the tiny island’s colourful history, which dates back to the prehistoric age. Mystical Newgrange in County Meath, for example, is older than the Egyptian Period and famous for its inner chamber that lights up during the winter solstice.

Less than 20 miles away is the sacred Hill of Tara, an archaeological complex spanning 100 acres. Known as the seat of the High

Further historical highlights in Leinster include the sixth century monastic site of Clonmacnoise, Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile and the Viking Triangle at Waterford city. All are testament to a country shaped by famine, war and conquest.

BEYOND HISTORY But the east of Ireland isn’t all about the ancient past: Newbridge in County Kildare also boasts the Curragh, Ireland’s most important thoroughbred racecourse. Hosting several prestigious events throughout the year, the season kicks off on May 21 and 22 with the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival, while one of Ireland’s biggest sporting and social events, the Derby Festival, runs from June 24-26.

HISTORY REVISITED

One of the largest unoccupied prisons in Europe, Kilmainham Gaol played a huge part in some of the most heroic and tragic events in Ireland’s history.

Destination New South Wales on a mission

Selling Travel was the official media partner for the UK legs of Destination New South Wales' (DNSW) two-week European Trade Mission this spring.

Several events were held in the UK before the 15-strong delegation of product suppliers from the Australian state moved to Germany and then on to France (Paris) for the first time.

THE MISSION UK agents got the opportunity to meet face to face with

suppliers representing a range of accommodation, attractions and touring routes across New South Wales. The theme for this year’s trade mission was 'Arts and Culture' and DNSW flew in artist, Sarah Rowan Dahl, and interactive musician, Jared Dahl, from the state for the mission.

The London event was held near London Bridge at the Tanner Warehouse on April 5 while the Manchester event took place two evenings later at Australasia Restaurant in Spinningfields. The suppliers also travelled to Glasgow to spend the day at Travel 2’s head office for inhouse training.

Top prizes included a return flight to Sydney with Qantas, city accommodation, tickets to a Sydney Opera House performance and Merlin Entertainment tickets. At each evening event the resident artist produced original pieces of work which agents also had the opportunity to win.

"Our suppliers have to travel a long way and extending the mission to two weeks affords them the opportunity to meet with a wide range of retailers.

"It also allows us to get to more cities and additionally go out and do in-house training with partners.”

Added Hawes: “For our agent guests there's the chance to meet directly with New South Wales' local suppliers. That is those guys who work on or own the product.

“Some suppliers who attended last year saw direct bookings as a result of meetings they had at the event and it gives them a chance to build business relationships and create personal relationships."

A fabulous night for magical Israel

Suppliers from Israel and UK travel agents were brought together by the Israel Government Tourist Office (IGTO) for an evening of fun, education and illusions at ‘The Magic Circle’ headquarters in Euston, London.

Kate Filer, Sales Manager, On the Go Tours, said: “An event that showcases not just what Israel has to offer, but who can look after clients once they’re there, as well as how to get there, can only make it easier to sell Israel to potential clients.”

THE EVENT Coming soon after a similar Manchester event, which saw suppliers speaking in the shadow of a Concorde, the venue proved an unusual pull for agents.

The 12 suppliers attending were: Dan Hotels, Fattal Hotel Group, Isrotel Hotels, Eilat, The Jerusalem Development Authority, David Intercontinental, On The Go Tours, El Al, Cyplon Holidays, IGTO, Mosaic Holidays and Holiday Designers.

Sherif Abdel Hady, Operations Manager, Mosaic Holidays, said: “The Israel Government Tourist Office always facilitates great interaction between tour operators and agents through unique events like this one.”

The event provided a wealth of knowledge and education on this iconic destination but agents also got to speak to the suppliers who could help them make bookings to Israel.

THE CHALLENGES Those suppliers over from Israel were keen to stress the destination's safety and emphasise its all-round appeal.

“The destination appears a lot in the press, and often for the wrong reasons, but what we strive to do is make people aware of the actual reality of Israel as opposed to general perceptions of it,” said Michelle Roberts, the IGTO's Business Development Manager.

Ilanit Melchior, Director of Tourism, The Jerusalem Development Authority said: “We have the tools and the experience to respond to these problems and

continue with everyday life. If something happens at the airport for example, it will be back up and running again within two hours.”

Adam Palmer of Palm Tree Travel took a similar line, saying: “The destination speaks for itself, but clients need to know what to expect in terms of security measures and Israel is actually one of the safest places in the region, if not the world, right now”.

THE MAGIC Agents were wowed towards the end of the evening, not only with a tour of the famed Magic Circle Museum but also with a magic show hosted

by Israeli mentalist Roy Zaltsman.

Roy provided an entertaining show centred around three popular Israeli destinations: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Eilat.

Laraine Angel of Spear Travels said: “It was such a privilege to have a guided tour of the Magic Circle Museum, and then

to see a very talented magician in the theatre after viewing an excellent presentation from Michelle Roberts, who told us all about the wonderful and unique attractions of the ‘Land of Creation’.”

THE PRIZES A prize draw was held at the end of the night for agents who completed a quiz based on the products on show – and prizes were handed out from each of the suppliers.

These ranged from a wine spa basket to a two-night stay in Israel courtesy of Fattal Hotels.

The event's main prize, provided by Dan Hotels, was a three-night holiday to Tel Aviv including flights and the lucky recipient was Ashley Steen, a part-time travel assistant who works alongside Laraine Angel at Romfordbased Spear Travels..

Angel commented: “Ashley was delighted to be a winner and is still in shock about picking up this really fantastic prize!

"We intend to visit Israel together, and will spend the first three nights in the beautiful Dan Panorama Hotel in Tel Aviv before moving on to see other parts of the country.”

Family sagas sorted... and fast!

WELCOME summer! And welcome to working from my outside office in the garden. I love how I can just pick up my laptop and phone and just move it all into my courtyard ‘Mediterranean garden’, just outside my home office. Let us hope that summer is here to stay as everyone feels happier with some warming rays on them.

I have a ‘once a year or so’ family of six, who this year are leaving the eldest at home but wanted to send the 15-year- old to Australia by himself with the remaining four going ‘somewhere’ for a week before the teenager in Oz flies to the same place for them all to have a week together.

My clients had no idea what might work and left it to me! So I spent a number of my evenings researching flight options, destinations, weather charts, etc.

Oh, and there had to be PADI diving and water sports for everyone, and as one of the group would have to go to meet the 15year-old ‘somewhere’ it could not involve an internal flight!

Because she knows I will spend so much time trying to meet all her criteria, I rarely have to find more than one accommodation option. I am pleased to say that all that time spent doing the research paid off as they booked exactly what I suggested!

So the teenager flies with Thai via Bangkok to Perth, before the rest of the family head to Bangkok and travel by road to Rayong (as it has better weather than the Andaman coast that time of year) for a week. Then there's a transfer for dad to go back to Bangkok to collect the 15-yearold and take him to Rayong for a four-day beach stay. Finally, everyone heads back to Bangkok for a three-night city stay together before they all make the journey home.

All seats were pre-booked so everyone was kept together on the way home, and what REALLY impressed my customer was that I confirmed all this on Good Friday!

The result: happy clients and a happy me

as the booking was over £7,000 and all tailor-made at a very decent margin.

With lots of excursions to add on as well, this was a nice booking. I have, of course, sent them details of The Flight of the Gibbon zip-lining that I did last year (in Chiang Mai) which took me so far out of my comfort zone that I will never forget the experience. If I can do it anyone can!

NETWORKING WITH NSW I attended the London Destination NSW event in London recently. Over 100 agents met with 15 suppliers who had all flown in from Australia for a tour of training events.

It was a great evening and I made lots of new contacts for when my clients and I next want to visit the Australian state.

A SURPRISE TRIP – IN A HURRY Last month I mentioned that I had done a lot of research for a couple wanting to go to Croatia, and that extra studying paid off again this month as the wife of a regular client contacted me for a surprise for his 60th birthday –three days away!

She had no clue where but it needed to be Europe with bird-watching and forests!

I immediately thought of the national parks in Croatia, and even knew a lodgetype property that would suit them.

So after I first suggested a self-drive through Finland and a visit to the Donana National Park in Spain, she opted for Croatia.

I was able to get it arranged fairly quickly.

I also had to make up a ‘voucher’ for her to give to her hubby with pictures and itinerary. Personally, I can’t imagine leaving such plans until just three days before my husband’s 60th – but it all worked out in the end!

THE HOSTS Travel Oregon hosted 22 international tour operators from eight different countries – the state's key target markets – on its inaugural seven-day Oregon Road Rally.

The participating tour operators were all seeking new or additional 'international-ready' Oregon itineraries to programme. A number of flights were sponsored by Delta Air Lines while Alamo provided the rental cars.

THE TRIP Travel Oregon currently works with dozens of tour operators including road rally participants, Utour, Maison des Etats-Unis, America Unlimited, American Vacations, Flight Centre and Qantas Holidays.

The trip began in Portland where the operators explored the historic downtown area by bike. Coffee and pastries were the order of the day next morning as the group ate and drank their way through downtown before driving from Portland to Florence along the coast.

On the way they stopped at Depoe Bay Sea Wall, Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the Historic Newport Bayfront before checking in to the

oceanfront Driftwood Shores Resort.

Early morning thrills filled the following morning with a Dune Buggy Ride at Sand Dunes Frontier before the drive from Eugene towards Southern Oregon.

The following day the groups experienced Crater Lake National Park followed by a tour of Collier Logging Museum before visiting the Casacade Mountain Range.

The operators saw two of the Seven Wonders of Oregon as they made their way to Cowboy Country. These included Smith Rock State Park in Central Oregon’s High Desert and the Painted Hills, which reveal millions of years of history in their layers of earth.

From Pendleton to Hood River, attraction stops included the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum, and the thundering, 125-foot Tamawanas Falls. The groups stopped at the Timberline Lodge, as seen in horror flick, The Shining.

The final day was spent soaking in the last bits of Oregon. The drive between Welches and Portland International Airport features a wealth of attractions and recommended stops on the Oregon Scenic Byways programme.

Savannah – traditional - quirky – authentic - fun –

uintessentially southern but reassuringly offbeat, Savannah is Georgia’s most intriguing city and the perfect jumping off spot for Georgia's wild beaches, says Laura Gelder

There are only a few cities in the USA where you can get your cocktail as a take out and the fact that Savannah is one of them will give you an indication of the fun in store in this atmospheric city.

But don't let that put your clients off if they're after a relaxing break! During the day Savannah's streets are calm and peaceful. The humidity can produce a pleasant languor but there are plenty of quiet squares perfect for watching the world go by. Cool green Spanish moss hangs loosely from the gnarled old live oak trees and often the only vehicles that pass by are horse-drawn carriages.

One view visitors will recognise is from Chippewa Square, the spot where Forrest Gump told the story of his life from a park bench. You can also visit Debi’s Diner (Laurie’s in the film) where Jenny worked – it’s the perfect place to try southern favourites like fried chicken and collard greens.

A PALPABLE PAST Savannah’s streets are lined with grand old mansions fronted by sweeping steps, Greek columns and gothic turrets. You can even peek inside the Mercer-Williams House, a pre-Civil War era mansion packed with rich artefacts which is the scene of many a real-life scandal (as told in the

book/film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil).

Savannah is often labeled ‘America’s most haunted city’ and ghost tours reveal the stories behind the spirits, incorporating tales of Civil War era hospitals, visits to historic homes tainted by murders and suicides and exploring the bloody trail left by the slave trade.

But it’s not all dark and spooky in Savannah!

The city’s parks and gardens are bursting with fragrant blooms – purple wisteria draping the walls, pink azaleas lining the streets and magnolia trees glowing in the dusk. Popular outdoor spaces include Forsyth Park, with its famous fountain, and Bonaventure Cemetery which is located in a former plantation on a scenic bluff overlooking the river.

Legend has it that after General James Edward Oglethorpe founded Savannah in 1733, when he left to return to England he said: “Don’t change a thing until I get back!” But the city does have a modern edge. Says Joseph Marinelli, President of Visit Savannah: “To some degree it hasn’t changed but the reality is that outstanding restaurants, clubs and cafés and beautiful boutique-style hotels open all the time, and there’s a retail renaissance!”

SOUTHERN FUSION As well as old-fashioned dining venues like Leopold’s ice cream parloir with its original soda fountain, there are modern restaurants offering a trendy take on classic cuisine. Cotton & Rye is housed in a former 1950s bank and serves up Carolina trout with okra gumbo and chocolate buttermilk pie on its breezy deck.

swanky Rocks on the Roof Bar in the Bohemian Hotel. This has sweeping views of the city and revellers can wash down local tapas like fried green tomatoes with a mint julep and watch the sun set over the river next to the fire pit.

In the day the River Street area is also buzzing, with over 75 boutiques, galleries, artists’ studios, restaurants and pubs housed in an old cotton warehouse. Another place to see local artists’ work is the historic City Market, where arts and crafts fill a courtyard in the heart of the historic district.

ESCAPE THE CITY Just a 20-minute drive across the marshes await the golden beaches of Tybee Island. Perfect for families, there are cute cottages to rent, rolling dunes to explore and fun informal eateries like the Crab Shack to entertain. King Kong back on top UNIVERSAL Orlando Resort has announced initial details of the next phase of its timeless King Kong ‘legend’, Skull Island: Reign of Kong.

Guests will board a 40-foot-long, 17-tonne expedition vehicle to independently navigate a rough jungle road through unpredictable terrain.

The front and back axles that support the vehicle’s 45-inch wheels can be steered individually, allowing the vehicle to take sharp turns and pull off complicated manoeuvres. Universal promises the ride will be one of the most immersive and realistic theme park experiences ever created.

As guests board their expedition vehicle, they will be met by one of the five guides – each with a distinct personality – who will be their driver.

There will be Becky Callahan. Tide of research in Orlando GUESTS who swim amongst the tropical fish at Discovery Cove in Orlando now have a new connection to the world’s oceans.

Discovery Cove has signed up to the Rising Tide Conservation project and guests who swim in the park’s Grand Reef or do the SeaVenture underwater dive experience will be supporting a conservation research programme designed to help protect the world’s most fragile ocean reefs. Started by SeaWorld, Rising Tide Conservation promotes efforts to breed and raise marine tropical fish in aquaculture facilities rather than collecting them in the wild. Michigan's profile has certainly increased over the past few years. And Virgin's flight to Detroit, introduced last June, offers easy access from the UK. However there is definitely room for improved knowledge. Most agents know about Detroit as the birthplace of Motown and Ford but maybe not what the wider state has to offer. We can supply them with destination training maps, brochures and itineraries.

How should agents sell and position Michigan?

elgium is putting its faith in a host of new museums, cycling trails and breweries to attract tourists back to the country following the recent terrorist bomb blasts in Brussels, says Kathryn Liston Although normal life has returned to Brussels after the airport bombings in March those tourists who do venture to Belgium’s capital are in for a treat.

EXPLORE ON TWO WHEELS Belgium is not a nation that stands still for long, especially on two wheels. Apparently Flemish people are among the fastest cyclists in the world and ride the furthest, according to exercise app Strava. And around 40% of tourists staying in the Flemish regions cycle during their holiday, according to Visit Flanders. There’s plenty for them to enjoy - 12,000 km of trails, including 100 themed loops, 1,200 km of long-distance routes, 2,000 races a year, 50 cycle-friendly hotels and museums such as the Tour of Flanders Centre in Oudennarde and Sportimonium Mechelen, which features cycling supremo Eddy Merckx.

FULL SPEED AHEAD FOR BEER Beer is big in Belgium and new breweries and restaurants offer hundreds of beers to choose from - sour and cherry lambic to name just two.

The Delirium Cafe in Brussels offers a massive 2,000 beers alone, while the Kulminator café in Antwerp lists 400.

Bourgogne de Flandres has recently opened a new brewery and visitor tour in the historic centre of Bruges. De Halve Maan is currently laying an underground beer pipeline from its brewery in Bruges city centre to its bottling plant on the outskirts to avoid using tankers.

A new Visit Flanders Belgian Beer Experiences brochure lists 11 beer museums and 75 breweries that offer guided tours in English.

In Brussels, two artisan breweries - Brussels Beer Project and En Stroemelings - have just opened. Plans have also just been announced for a €25 million Belgian Beer Palace. The multi-media centre, which will showcase 1,000 Belgian brews, and is expected to open in 2018.

Mechelen, one of Flanders’ most underrated historic cities, is highlighting the role women have played in running breweries. A new multimedia themed walk called Beer in Women’s Hands.

WHAT’S NEW Brussels has two new art museums: the Millennium Iconoclas Museum of Art (MIMA) focuses on cultural changes linked to the digital age while the Art & Design Atomium Museum features the plastic collection from the nearby Plasticarium.

Master chocolatier Jean-Philippe Darcis is opening La Chocolaterie in Verviers, near Liège, in July with information areas, tasting lounge and shop.

The Boverie Museum, which has opened in Liège in partnership with the Louvre, is featuring the city's fine arts collection and an exhibition featuring works by artists such as Monet and Picasso. Belgium’s largest ever Salvador Dali exhibition is taking place at Liège's Guillemins Railway station until August 31. 

Talking Alberta - in conversation with Lyn Naylor Lyn Naylor is Travel Alberta’s trade trade manager and she’s full of ideas on how and when to sell the province. We asked her to share her top tips on the destination…

Tell us about some less-well-known areas of the province: Everyone knows us for The Rockies but I was lucky enough to visit the south of Alberta recently and experienced the diversity of the province first hand, from the farming in the east to the mountains of the west. From the Badlands to the prairies and then the rolling foothills, there is an air of spirituality and history in the area that you can’t fail to be touched by.

"Walking amongst the fossils of the Dinosaur Provincial Park or examining the drawings at Writing on Stone Provincial Park, it only takes a moment to imagine how our ancestors so long ago enjoyed the same stunning landscapes.

What does Alberta offer beyond peak season? In my view, a chance to experience the very best of the province. As a skier, I find winter very attractive with champagne powder and big blue skies reflecting the sunlight off the snow – it’s a lure that is just too tempting. And in spring you can still enjoy ideal conditions on the mountains and the chance to catch the Northern Lights when it is not so cold. A visit at this time also allows you to experience the change as the lakes start to defrost, wildlife comes out of hibernation and the days start to lengthen.

Autumn is also an ideal time to experience the very best of friendly Albertan welcomes as the temperatures are still warm and the wildlife is still around but the crowds have left.

When should agents start booking winter holidays to Alberta? If not already, then now!

Those clients that are interested in the mountain will find the best deals in the market right now: early bird offers are on sale for booking before June 30. Winter tours and Northern Lights packages are also very popular, so the earlier clients book for this the more chance they have of getting the dates they want.

We are keen to support them in anyway we can, to help them sell the very best of Alberta whenever they can” What would you recommend for clients travelling in summer? Those clients who want to travel in the summer need to book early, Summer 2017 is already being booked, especially for key dates such as those around the Calgary Stampede and main July/August period. I would encourage them to look outside the box. Alberta is full of amazing places so push them to go a little further and discover something different.

Why not suggest a tour of the south and then time in the mountains via Kananaskis or The Crossing at Ghost River (an ideal spot for groups)? Or they could travel into Edmonton and take in a festival before exploring further afield.

have been fully refurbished. The Banff Gondola will reopen after its redevelopment and promises to wow even more visitors. And Rocky Mountaineer is extending its season to run from April. We are all very excited to see the launch of the new Westjet flights to Calgary and Edmonton from Gatwick they will definitely help encourage agent sales.

How can agents get more help on selling Alberta? Our Travel Alberta website (travelalberta.com) has so much information from itineraries to activities and everything inbetween. I know many agents are Canada Specialists and this is an ideal tool to learn more about the destination as well as a way to ensure they are invited to take part in roadshows, webinars and fams.

From sweeping vistas of mountain peaks to picturesque vineyards, few countries offer more scenic distractions on a road trip than New Zealand, says Andy Hoskins

A

pprehension turned to joy within a few minutes of hitting the road in New Zealand. It was the size of the campervan that had fazed me slightly – it was enormous. And then I’d had a whirlwind explanation of the essentials: how to hook it up to electric points, how to refuel, how to use the shower, how to deal with sewage, how to fill up on fresh water... the list went on but mainly I was focused on not confusing the latter two details.

For a first time campervan customer it was all rather bewildering, but once I was behind the wheel and on the move, heading west from Christchurch, I was in my element.

The blacktop stretched out before me as I carved my way through the agricultural plains of the east coast, with just the peaks of Arthur’s Pass National Park looming before me and barely another vehicle in sight. A light snow shower as I gained altitude was a reminder that autumn would soon be

giving way to winter but also added a touch of majesty to the mountainous surroundings.

I refuelled with a coffee and a bite to eat in a quiet roadside cafe and by late afternoon I’d crossed the towering Southern Alps and was descending to the west coast and a perfect golden sunset.

The timing of my trip, in late April, meant I hadn’t needed to pre-book my overnight stops and had the pick of the campsites.

On the downside, the nights were chilly.

Nevertheless, my campervan became a real home to me over the course of the following week. I had everything I needed right to hand in this cleverly designed residence on wheels: a cooker, sink, fridge, shower and bathroom, dining table, beds, TV and DVD player. I was as happy as a Hobbit in his hole as I toured the ‘home of Middle Earth’, taking in destinations like the Franz Josef Glacier, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Mount Cook National Park.

with fantastic facilities, means that self-drive holidays aren’t just for backpackers. They are a very popular choice among families and older travellers too.”

Taumarunui’s Forgotten World Adventures (forgottenworldadventures.co.nz) has launched a new RailBike experience for more adventurous travellers than its existing Rail Cart option caters for. Both options let visitors travel along a historic railway line in a rural area of the North Island.

The Redwoods Treewalk (redwoods.co.nz) opened in February and is the first of its kind in New Zealand.

The suspended ecological walk takes visitors among 110-year-old redwood trees in Rotorua.

A new website, RideNZ.co, is a rich source of information for mountain bikers taking to the trails of the central North Island.  Accommodation: The Lodge at Kinloch (thekinlochclub.com) opened in January. It is located 20 minutes by road from the popular tourist town of Taupo and alongside the the Jack Nicklaus-designed Kinloch Club golf course that overlooks Lake Taupo.

A luxury four-bedroom Owner’s Lodge is now available at Craggy Range’s Giants Winery (craggyrange.com) in Hawke’s Bay. Helena Bay Lodge (helenabay.com) opens for business in November. The lodge is located in the northeast of the country, around a two- anda-half hour drive from Auckland. The high-end property sits on three kilometres of pristine coastline and has four private beaches.  Airlines: Emirates launched nonstop flights between Dubai and Auckland in March – immediately claiming the title of the world’s longest flight.

Qatar Airways (qatarairways.com) will introduce services between Doha and Auckland this winter (which will take the title off its rival).

The Background: The five-star, 217-guestroom London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square is one of the brand’s flagship hotels. The red-brick, townhouse-style building is located in Mayfair, close to Oxford Street and Bond Street.

THE ROOM: I was assigned a suite for the night and, true to the room category, it was a generous size with separate living/dining, bathroom and bedroom areas. A stylish, modern four-poster bed was the highlight and was complete with piles of pillows and sumptuous bedding. A large wardrobe contained iron and ironing board, safe, minibar, kettle, DVDs and DVD player. The the living area comprised sofa and easy

chairs, round dining table for four, desk, coffee table, Nespresso machine and board games. There were wall-mounted TVs in both the bedroom and living areas, and decor was browns, creams and a dash of green, with black and white photography adding to the mix.

THE FACILITIES: No five-star Mayfair hotel would be complete without a celebrity chef to its name.

Gordon Ramsay and his Maze restaurant fulfils that requirement with awardwinning French and Asian cuisine for lunchtime and evening dining.

South Korea is riding a popularity wave, based on a growing appreciation of its food, culture, special interest tourism and temple stays, to name but a few of its many draws, says Anna Maria Espsäter

I

t is a bright, crisp autumn morning with blazing sunshine as I make my way to Gyeongbokgung Palace in central Seoul, dressed up in full regalia.

To make the royal palace tour more royal still, myself and a group of Westerners have been offered the opportunity to play dressup and wear traditional Korean garb for the duration of the tour, taking in both the palace and nearby Bukchon Hanok Village, a part of Seoul with old-style buildings.

My pink-and-purple, rather binding outfit, complete with flouncy underskirt and beribboned jacket, seems slightly over the top at first, but I am soon loving every ‘movie star minute’. The locals think we must be celebrities of some kind and keep asking to have their picture taken with us, as we prance around the 14th century palace.

The grand tour takes in many of the buildings, from banquet halls to pavilions, beautifully restored after the Japanese occupation from 1910-45.

From the palace a short walk takes us to Bukchon Hanok Village, in parts dating back 600 years, with narrow, steep streets, quirky shops and restaurants.

The sightseeing is proving quite strenuous though, and after our morning’s vigorous ambles I am delighted to be let out of my outfit to sample one of South Korea’s absolute highlights: the cuisine.

And lunch does not disappoint: Korea’s famous barbeque beef, cooked at my table, with all the trimmings, in this case various types of kimchi, hot sauces, lettuce leaves, sesame leaves, seaweed and much more. Foodie heaven for the weary visitor!

Food for thought Awareness of South Korea’s many charms is steadily increasing, not least because of its delectable cuisine.

In the last decade or so Korean cooking has become the fastest-growing Asian food trend in the UK, with more restaurants opening.

International visitors to South Korea can try their hand at making traditional dishes such as bibimbap or kimchi, but it’s not just cooking classes that are popular.

Aspects of Korea’s unique culture can be explored all over the country, for example, through drumming lessons, temple stays or taekwondo classes.

And the rise of Hallyu, the so-called Korean wave of contemporary culture that emerged in the 1990s, Korean music (k-pop) and TV dramas and more are all increasingly popular draws for visitors.

The 5,000-year-plus history and varied landscape, much of which is protected, provide other key highlights.

UNESCO has awarded 12 sites with heritage status – 11 cultural, 1 natural – and there are a total of 21 national parks scattered around the country.

South Korea has also been firmly establishing itself as a key sports tourism destination in recent years, hosting a number of sporting events year-round.

And 2018 will see the country host the Winter Olympics for the first time, in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do Province.

year, reaching some 135,000 a year and the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) is aiming to exceed 140,000 in 2016.

Peter Barron, Sales Manager UK and Ireland for Korean Air, says the airline “continues to enjoy great support from the UK” to Seoul and other points on the airline’s network.

“Rising demand led to the introduction of the A380 on the London-Seoul route, increasing capacity,” he added.

As well as a varied and interesting destination in its own right, South Korea makes for a great stopover, or multi-centre destination, with good connections to neighbouring countries.

Several UK tour operators are currently offering tours combining South Korea with Japan or China, among others, while stopover possibilities when travelling further afield also abound. With the Olympics looming and other major events taking place in the country, this is a great time to be selling South Korea.

Happening Hallyu: Contemporary Korean culture has taken its Asian neighbours by storm!

Ancient monuments: Replete with historic palaces, temples and fortresses, South Korea’s varied and fascinating history is easily explored and visited.

The Cook Islands has plenty to offer those in search of the archetypal dreamy South Pacific stopover on route to New Zealand or Australia, says Karl Cushing

H

aving an overripe Noni fruit squished into my scalp wasn’t quite what I’d envisaged when I’d signed up to a nature tour with local legend Pa (pastreks.com).

As the mashed-up pulp began to dry in the mid-day sun I was seriously starting to question the wisdom of the move but Pa assured me it was nature’s cure for baldness and if it worked half as well as the natural hair removal paste he’d demonstrated on a now smooth patch on my leg I figured I could be on to a winner.

Meeting such disarmingly friendly and colourful locals was one of the highlights of my Cook Islands trip. Another was how ‘un-resorty’ it was, the typically small-scale accommodation scattered over a wide area rather than concentrated in major centres.

made specialists such as Abercrombie & Kent and Cox & Kings, alongside the likes of Austravel, Kuoni and Premier Holidays, the Cook Islands doesn’t command the price tags of Polynesian rivals such as Tahiti.

“The Cook Islands is a perfect year-round destination,” says Joanne Lowery, Product Manager at Gold Medal, who advises the driest months are May to October and the warmest time is January through to March.

Austravel Destination Manager Katie Warburton notes UK visitor numbers are running around 15% up.

“The Cook Islands are having a great year. There are also lots of upgrades and refurbs going on out there at the moment, which is always good for the customer.”

Like all South Pacific destinations it’s a long old flight from the UK with the most obvious route being Heathrow to Rarotonga via Los Angeles with Air New Zealand.

As the main island of Rarotonga is a mere four- or six-hour flight from Auckland or Sydney one option is to tack a stay onto a tour of New Zealand or Australia.

Upon landing you’ll encounter another local character – the Ukulele-playing Jake Numanga, who has welcomed international flights for nearly 40 years.

Getting around ‘Raro’ is a cinch as you can easily circumnavigate the island on a hired scooter or the round-island bus service.

Alongside exploring the different beaches, restaurants and bars that ring the island the route reveals small white well-tended churches and gardens brimming with all manner of fruit trees, while side roads beckon you towards the lush mountainous interior. To experience the latter clients should consider a cross-island hike with Pa or a 4WD island tour with the likes of Raro Safari Tours and local DMC Raro Tours.

Avarua’s bustling Punanga Nui Saturday market offers souvenirs and great food, with black pearls a popular local purchase. Another staple is ‘Island Nights’ held at Highland Paradise and Te Vara Nui village, which offers

the chance to hear all about the islands’ history.

One of Raro’s best beaches is breezy Tikioki, in Titikaveka to the south east. The lagoon has excellent snorkelling, with guided walks offered in the lovely Takitumu Conservation Area. Nearby Little Polynesian is popular with wedding parties; Royal Takitumu Resort is set in a lovely secluded spot and adults-only Rumours has a decent spa.

To the east, the more sheltered Muri Beach is a popular base due to its tourism attractions, varied accommodations and waterports in the pretty lagoon.

Nautilus is “a really amazing resort,” says Austravel’s Warburton.

Family-friendly options include the four-star Pacific Resort while options along the south coast include Sea Change Villas (sea-change-rarotonga.com), and the southwesternly Rarotongan Beach Resort and Spa with its prime positioning on Aroa beach. From here and up the west coast towards two of the larger resort-style properties, Edgewater and

Crown Beach, along with respected local operator Dive Rarotonga (thedivecentre-rarotonga. com), you can catch some dramatic sunsets.

For many however, not least honeymooners, Raro is primarily a staging point for the main event — a stay on sleepier, dreamier Aitutaki.

From Maunga Pu to the white-sand palmfringed beaches, intimate thatched villa set-ups and idyllic Blue Lagoon flecked by little islets or ‘motu’, the island oozes romance and ticks the main idyllic paradise boxes.

Staying options include Aitutaki Lagoon Resort (aitutakilagoonresort.com), with its wonderful remote setting and overwater villas; Escape (aitutakiescape.com), with its handful of sumptuous villas and Etu Moana (etumoana.com). For a larger property try Pacific Resort Aitutaki (pacificaitutaki. com). Set amid lovely grounds it is far superior to its sister property in Raro’s Muri Beach.

Aitutaki’s lagoon is a haven for watersports and many boat trips such as Gold Medal’s Bishop’s Lagoon Cruise — its most popular Cook Islands tour — take in the tiny, One Foot Island for lunch, a wander across its idyllic beaches and the chance to collect the island’s distinctive passport stamp.

Mine stopped off at the deserted Raputa and Moturakau where TV shows Survivor and Shipwrecked were filmed, pausing for a snorkel with some inquisitive turtles and impressive giant clams.

Of the remainder of the 15 major islands, all far less developed in tourism terms, two options worth a look include Mangaia and Atiu, served by the homely Atiu Villas (atiuvillas.com). I loved my side trip to Atiu (atiu. info/attractions/tours/) from bouncing around in the back of the pick-up to the grass airstrip to the island tour I took with ‘birdman’ George, another local legend who took us to his local ‘tumunu’ watering hole to neck some homebrew!

New flights to destinations across Latin America are making the region more accessible than ever. We round up the latest additions

he many countries that comprise Latin America, from Mexico in the north to Argentina and Chile in the south, are rich in extreme landscapes, colourful culture, historic sites and abundant wildlife – and increasingly they are becoming easier to get to.

Non-stop flights between the UK and Latin America have traditionally been limited to just a few services to Brazil and Mexico, but that will change this spring as British Airways adds two brand-new services to Costa Rica and Peru.

Furthermore, several other carriers are adding new destinations that can be reached with convenient connections from European hubs.

All of which is good news for UK travellers and tour operators, as the Latin American Travel Association’s chairman, Byron Shirto, points out: “We warmly welcome any development to increase and improve accessibility to the many and contrasting attractions of Latin America. It is additional evidence of the growth and popularity of the region as a tourism destination.”

LATA says Costa Rica was already among the countries seeing the biggest rise in consumer enquiries among its tour operator members, even before new flights were announced, while Peru remains one of the top destinations for first-time visitors to Latin America.

“The Lima flight will make travelling to the iconic Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail much easier, and Lima is also a convenient gateway to many other South American destinations,” says Shirto. “Costa Rica has become very popular due to its national parks and biological reserves, home to a vast array of fauna and flora, while both Pacific and Caribbean beaches provide a stunning backdrop.”

Costa Rica British Airways’ new service from Gatwick to Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose, commenced on April 27. The twice-weekly service operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays and will increase to three flights a week in the winter.

Return fares start from £687 in World Traveller, £1,100 in World Traveller Plus and £2,532 in Club World. The average flying time is 10 hours and 50 minutes.

“With everything from its incredible wildlife, rugged rainforests and volcanic peaks, as well as stunning beaches and, of course, world-famous coffee, Costa Rica offers an incredible array of places to visit and experience,” says Colm Lacy, British Airways’ head of commercial Gatwick.

Mauricio Ventura, Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism adds: “In the last 12 months we have seen an increase of 12.9% in tourists from the UK, staying an average of two weeks and making a valuable contribution to the economy.”

In addition, Thomson Airways introduced a weekly service from London Gatwick to Liberia, in northwestern Costa Rica, last November.

Mexico Aeromexico, the country’s national carrier, is adding a sixth weekly flight between Heathrow and Mexico City from June to September, with onward connections to destinations such as Cancun, Cozumel, Merida, Guadalajara, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. The service is operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

British Airways also operates from London Heathrow to Mexico City and both BA and Virgin Atlantic fly from London Gatwick to Cancun.

And Thomson Airways flies to Cancun year-round (exc. November-December) from Gatwick, Birmingham and Manchester, and has seasonal services from several regional airports.

Perhaps the most significant of all recent developments is the imminent launch (May 4) of British Airways services from Gatwick to Lima, Peru’s capital city. The country has long been among the top sellers in Latin America for UK tour operators despite the need to take connecting flights.

Tour operator Last Frontiers has welcomed the launch later this year of a ‘long-awaited’ LAN service between Santiago and Puerto Natales in Chile. “The new service will cut the land transfer to Torres del Paine National Park down from a four to five-hour road journey to a one-and-ahalf hour flight,” says the operator.

Long-standing services to Brazil (Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) and Argentina (Buenos Aires) are offered by British Airways.

Brazilian airline TAM also flies from Heathrow to Sao Paulo and, with partner airline LAN, operates a large network across Latin America.

Portuguese airline TAP operates 14 routes between Lisbon/Porto and 11 Brazilian cities and Air France/KLM and British Airways’ partner, Iberia, are among other airlines offering further one-stop options across Latin America.

Rio – a world-class city

One of the world’s most exciting cities, Rio immediately lives up to its reputation for stunning beauty and must-see Making a splash world-class attractions but it Falls at Iguazu is also a place where you keep your ears and eyes wide open and take extra safeguards. We are a pair of hardened travel publishers but I’m glad we have a trusted guide.

Corcovado (‘hunchback’ in Portuguese) is a mountain in central Rio de Janeiro, just west of the city centre, and in the Tijuca Forest, which is a national park. It’s known worldwide for the 125ft statue of Jesus on its peak, Cristo Redentor or ‘Christ the Redeemer’.

“We leave very early in the morning,” our guide says, and the next day we discover why: it is still early, and the crowds are huge. You can get there via a narrow road or by a 20-minute ride on the Corcovado Rack Railway (opened in 1884). We’re told that for most people today the wait to board could take several hours because of the huge volume of visitors (up to 300,000).

But whatever it takes – it’s worth it! This polluted lake will be used in this year’s Olympics but several times I am promised it will be ‘clean enough’ when the Games begin.

Great restaurants

Our second-day ‘must-see’ is Sugarloaf Mountain, and clambering into the modern panoramic-view cable car and peering up I’m glad I don’t get vertigo! The views from the top stop me in my tracks. I mutter to myself: “This is unmissable; simply world-class”.

Having seen Rio from very high up, on day three we explore by car and on foot and what strikes me is the atmosphere: the energy, the colours, the fabulous people, the noise, the laughter and the car horns.

There’s a slightly third-world feel at times, that sits right alongside all the modernity of a slick worldrenowned city.

Our guide takes us to gems we’d miss under our own steam – places like Escadaria Selaron (Selaron Steps), with its colourful display of thousands of painted tiles. There are numerous great restaurants of course, especially (but not exclusively) if you like meat. A dance bar is recommended to us: wow, fantastic band and singer Joyce Candido (in London very soon) belting out that fabulous Samba beat.

Iguazu Falls

Next up is Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which lies on the border between Brazil and Argentina in two adjacent parks that make up one of the largest natural protected areas in South America.

Try to visit from both sides. I thought two days here might be too much, but I am so wrong.

The whole thing is e-n-o-r-m-o-u-s and in my mind’s eye it dwarfs Niagara. There are various circuits and catwalks that get you so close your breath is taken away. I am ushered to the (essential) boat ride, clutching my dry clothes and towel which I shove into the waterproof bag provided.

“Things could get quite wet,” I’m told.

when we will stop and turn around. But we don’t! On we go, right through the waterfall.

And so on to Buenos Airies where I am immediately struck by its sophisticated air. I’m told that the city is safe – well, “South America safe” - according to our third Metropolitan Touring guide.

He just can’t wait to get talking about The Falkland Islands, clearly enjoying our mildly- amused discomfort.

Buenos Aires has a wealth of attractions, some you’ll have heard about and some not so well known.

Recoleta Cemetery, which features above-ground mausoleums, is the size of a small village. Many rich and famous people are buried here including Eva Perón, some presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon.

We also drop into the Eva Peron interactive museum – very interesting and highly recommended.

I can almost touch the atmosphere in La Boca Neighbourhood. There are shops, restaurants, bars, shows, dancing in the street, guitars being strummed, colour and noise – and museums that are a delight for any football-crazy visitors. Boca Juniors is a famous team – Diego Maradona played for them - and their stadium, La Bombonera, is a football Mecca.

The next day we are in San Antonio de Areco, a lovely small town known for its gaucho traditions.

There are artisan workshops that make exquisite silver and leather goods for the gauchos, handicrafts, blacksmiths, museums, artefacts and pictures.

We head for El Ombu Estancia, an operational farm that offers visitors a real gaucho/estancia experience. We ride off on horseback, in tranquil surroundings, with our very own gaucho. What a great guy! Our BBQ lunch, taken out on the porch, is delicious and a famous gaucho sings us traditional Estancia songs.

We are led out to a field, to meet a dozen or so beautiful horses and told to make no noise at all. I look on in awe as one gaucho whispers to his horse and demonstrates a true unity and trust football craz between man and horse. y in La Boca It’s a truly jaw-dropping experience!

The time when it was a struggle to find family-friendly cruises is firmly in the past, says Jeannine Williamson

rom creche facilities for tiny cruisers to cookery classes and cool areas for teens, ships are now equipped with a raft of amenities to keep youngsters – and parents – happy.

There is a growing trend for family cabins and Carnival Vista, debuting this May, has the new Family Harbour area with cabins sleeping up to five and a dedicated lounge. MSC Seaside, launching in December 2017, will introduce Super Family Plus – three interconnecting staterooms accommodating up to 10. For 2017/18 the line has also announced ‘All in One’ fares, allowing single parents to pay 60% of the fare for their child, rather than a cabin priced on adult double occupancy.

he Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has released details of some of the 'strangest' calls it has received over the past year or so.

While some enquiries to the FCO might involve –quite literally – life or death situations, others are slightly more frivolous: like the apparently homesick guy who phoned in to ask where he could buy English bacon abroad.

Then there was the caller who dialled expressing concern that his impending move to Spain's Costas would be marred by Spanish nudists. That’s a worry that has probably kept us all awake at some point – or maybe not.

Other enquiries making the FCO's list included a woman in Lebanon looking for an English butler, a holidaymaker asking for travel advice for trips to Coventry and a filmmaker seeking a pensioner for a part in a new film.
