MTRCB urged to review 'Elcano And Magellan' for possible ban, cut version

A SOCIALLY relevant film from the Philippines titled: “Across The Crescent Moon” — which is reportedly “action-packed” too — is set for viewing in the City of Los Angeles and suburbs starting on Saturday (November 9).

At the core of the critically acclaimed movie is an inter-faith marriage (between a Muslim and a Christian) as it faces challenges to its strength.

And as the members of each the families of different cultures face up to their shared challenges, they too have to contend with the social problems that affect their community as a whole.

WHEN Ferdinand Marcos died in 1989, you would think that the Filipinos would learn from the 1986 People Power “revolution” and accept it as a fact that so much wealth had been plundered from the Philippines by the Marcos family. Well, not really.

The recent documentary about the former Philippine First Lady Imelda Marcos, titled “The Kingmaker” and directed by Lauren Greenfield, will certainly make your blood boil over the woman who has been dubbed as the “Iron Butterfly.”

The popular Filipino love team Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, better known as “Kathniel,” took time to speak and pose with the members of our team shortly before their lively concert titled “One Magical Night” at the Pechanga Resort and Casino.

The love pair expressed gratefulness for the warm welcome that they got from the fans, and as well as, from the casino management.

Kathryn and Daniel said they would have wanted to go around and enjoy southern California but they were prevented by a very tight schedule.

The “Kathniel” couple did one last show in Stockton, California and immediately flew back to

Activists picket Philippine Consulate Office in LA

n Sunday (November 3) over 50 U.S.-based groups and rights activists rallied in front of the building housing the Philippine Consulate General Office in Los Angeles to protest alleged military air strikes on civilian communities and the arrests of at least 57 human rights activists in the Philippines.

The demonstrators demanded the stop of the use U.S. tax dollars in the Philippine government’s actions that supposedly result in human rights violations and the curtailment of political rights which allegedly became more rampant since Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took office.

Joyous Prim, National Officer of ICHRP US shared her firsthand account of meeting some of the leaders who had been arrested: "Two months ago, a delegation of human rights advocates and church people from here in Southern California visited communities in Negros where we met human rights activists who were selflessly living with and organizing for the rights of the sugar cane workers and farmers. We heard first hand accounts of extra judicial killings and saw the never ending text of death threats our host received. Claims that the arrest had to do with rebels entering Bacolod are all lies. These are legal activists who are our friends,

who hosted us while we were there and are respected, long time human rights defenders from legal organizations like the National Federation of Sugar Workers, Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Teatro Obrero and Teatro Bungkal in Bacolod. If Duterte's Memorandum Order 32 was genuine in targeting the causes of lawless violence in Negros, then the police and the military would be arresting themselves, the death squads they direct, and the landlords and corporations who wield gunmen and private armies."

The A rmed Forces of the Philippines allegedly dropped 500-pound bombs on civilian communities on October 26, 2019 and days later, on October 31, the authorities conducted mass arrests of leaders involved in rights groups who have been critical of the Duterte government. Among those arrested include farmers, trade unionists, women’s rights activists, a journalist, and 14 minors.

Review: ‘The Kingmaker’... from Page 1 she claims that the social conditions were not the same when the Marcoses were in power.

One would think that at 90, Imelda Marcos would be at a ripe age to repent. Well, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

In the film, Andy Bautista of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCCG) tried to retrieve the assets of the Marcos family, particularly an original painting of the great Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

Bautista, who was also present at the question and answer segment at the Laemmle Royal Theater shortly after the showing of the documentary, said that he was still baffled by the great wealth that the Marcoses have accumulated.

Bautista recalled that he particularly asked Imelda Marcos if the Picasso painting was hers. To which the former first lady reportedly responded: “There were so many. I cannot remember.”

“Many Filipinos still idolize Imelda Marcos. The right information must be told to the people. The film tells us what is really going on in the Philippines,” Bautista added.

The Marcos family is apparently staging a political comeback. As also shown in the film, the Marcoses allegedly funded the election of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The son of the former dictator, Bong Bong Marcos, was defeated by Congresswoman Leni Robredo on his vice presidential run. But his sister, Imee, won a seat at the Philippine Senate.

The first half of Greenfield’s film on Imelda was similar to the documentary made by Ramona Diaz (Imelda, 2004) which focuses on the Philippine first lady’s life from 1965-1986.

In Greenfield’s film, it was revealed how Imelda turned an island called “Caluit” (where some indigenous people used

Miracle worker celebrates 50th birthday at FCC – Friends and supporters recently celebrated the 50th birthday of miracle worker, Bro. Carmelo Cortez, at the Filipino Cultural Center (FCC) in the historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles.

Cortez, who claimed to have seen the “Mother of Eucharist and Grace” when he was still a young man, has become known as a miracle worker for his ability to create “holy” images on the petals of roses.

Some of Cortez’s supporters have claimed that they have been healed from their sickness by attending his prayer meetings. The said prayer meetings always end with the distribution of rose petals bearing human faces and/or full-bodied human images believed to be representing particular Catholic saints.

by Cecille Ramos, president of the Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council, through the help of Bernie Targa-Ganon, manager of the FCC.

In a press conference held at the Noypitz Bar and Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday (November 5), Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz, his wife Catherine and other consular office personnel joined writer and film director Baby R. Nebrida in the promotion of the movie’s upcoming screening dates in Los Angeles.

Nebrida said she knows the value of cinema in raising public awareness and, consequently, in effecting social change.

“And we (as artists and film makers) cannot be successful in our advocacies if we don’t have support from the government,” Nebrida added.

In their press release, the show’s producer said the movie will not “focus on the Islamic nor Catholic religions as they are quite opposite in beliefs, but rather, it intends to exhibit the best of

the two faiths.”

“We will focus on their family life, the challenges they face when current issues are dealt with like human trafficking, slavery and love for family.”

In the same press release, the producers said about 29% of smuggled persons are transported through the Southern Backdoor with the use of small and big boats.

As part of Mayor Garcetti’s Green New Deal, the Eland Solar and Storage Center will help Los Angeles reach 55% renewable energy by 2025, 80% renewable energy by 2036, and 100% renewable energy by 2045.

“Eland Solar and Storage Center will offer reliable, cost-competitive energy as we expand solar and other renewable resources to meet our aggressive climate change goals,” said LADWP General Manager Martin L. Adams.

“Among other benefits, the project will bridge the gap between day and night, dramatically increasing the operational value of the project.”

The Eland Solar and Storage Center will be LADWP’s first utility-scale, integrated solar and battery project engineered to provide fully dispatch power to customers in the evening and night time hours — reducing reliance on natural gas when renewable energy is unavailable.

Located on 2,650 acres in Kern County, California, the project will include two large-scale solar facilities that will capture 400 megawatts (MW) of solar energy and store up to 1,200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy — all of which can be distributed to meet peak demand. The site will hold enough energy to power 283,330 homes across Los Angeles.

The Eland proposal will be built

in two phases. It was selected out of a pool of 130 proposals because of the project’s scope and competitive price, which includes a fixed cost of less than 2 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for solar power, the lowest price offered in U.S. history. 8minutenergy will cover all costs associated with the development, maintenance, and operation of the facility.

The unanimous vote from the City Council approves two power purchase agreements with 8minutenergy to develop the project and begin commercial operation no later than December 31, 2023.

The contract will cost less than $5 per year for each LADWP customer.

The project is expected to create 700 jobs over the 14-month construction period and employ 40 long-term operations and maintenance staff when in service.

Currently, LADWP receives 32% of its energy from renewable sources, and the Eland Solar and Storage Center will increase that number by up to 7.1%. That would enable the City to prevent up to 727,360 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from a conventional fossil fuel power plant — the equivalent of taking 148,700 cars off the road for a year.

The joint clean energy investment with Glendale Water and Power, which will receive 12.5% of the total solar and battery storage, will be administered through the Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA).

MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte has welcomed Vice President Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo’s acceptance of his formal offer for her to co-chair the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), Malacañang said on Thursday.

During the 43rd Cabinet meeting at Malacañan Palace on Wednesday night, Duterte was optimistic that Robredo would realize the importance of his administration’s intensified crackdown on illegal drugs, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

“The President mentioned it was good that Vice President Ma. Leonor Robredo accepted his formal offer to co-chair the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs,” the Palace official said.

On Wed nesday, Robredo a nnounced her decision to accept her designation as co-chairperson of ICAD, an anti-drug body that is mandated to ensure the implementation of all policies, laws, and issuances on the government’s anti-narcotics drive.

“With the Vice President at the helm of the anti-narcotics campaign, President Duterte expects that the former would see the realities on the ground, particularly with respect to the government's position against extraju-

dicial or state-sponsored killings,” Panelo said Robredo's acceptance came even after her spokesperson, lawyer Barry Gutierrez, claimed that her appointment was "unclear" and "non-existent".

Robredo will lead ICAD, along with Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director General Aaron Aquino, until June 30, 2022, according to the memorandum signed by Duterte on October 31.

The memorandum also directed the PDEA, the Philippine National Police, the Dangerous Drugs Board, and all other law enforcement agencies to extend their "full assistance and cooperation" to Robredo to ensure the success of the administration's fight against illegal drugs.

Duterte was prompted to name Robredo as ICAD co-chair after the latter claimed that the government’s anti-drug campaign is “obviously not working”.

Robredo said she would help the administration combat illegal drugs without costing the lives of suspected drug offenders in the country.

Duterte and Robredo have yet to meet to discuss her specific mandate in the administration’s efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal drugs.

Malacañang assured Robredo that she will get the support she needs, saying “her success is our success”.

Mindanao quake initial damage to agri infra at P4.55-M MANILA — The Department of Agriculture-Disaster Risk Reduction Management (DA-DRRM) Operation Center on Tuesday reported PHP4.55 million initial damage to agricultural infrastructure brought about by the recent earthquakes in Davao del Sur and Cotabato.

In its latest bulletin, the DA-DRRM said damage to agri-infrastructure includes the Rice Processing Center, Solar-Powered Irrigation System, DA Guest House, and a warehouse in North Cotabato.

The DA also reported that its mini-storage facility for coffee in Balutakay, Bansalan, Davao del Sur was also damaged while irrigation canals in districts 8, 11. 13, and 14 in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur sustained major cracks.

It said the DA Regional Field Offices (RFOs) in 11 and 12 have an on-going physical inspection of the affected areas to further estimate the cost of damage and losses incurred.

Meanwhile, the DA, in partnership with various government and non-government agencies, has been distributing relief support to areas affected by the earthquake that left at least 17 people dead and 327 injured. (PNA)

Carpio blasts Order of Sikatuna honors given to Chinese envoy Carpio: Our national heroes must now be turning in their graves PASAY CITY — Outgoing Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua may have received praises from Malacañang and the House of Representatives but not from retired Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who criticized the awards given to him Thursday.

“Our national heroes who died defending our territory against foreign invaders, must now be turning in their graves,” he told a gathering of lawyers who are graduates from the University of the Philippines College of Law, where he is an alumnus.

Carpio was the guest speaker for UP Law’s alumni homecoming at the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City.

In his speech, he questioned the basis for President Duterte’s conferment of the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Datu on Zhao in late October as well as the House of Representatives’ grant of a Congressional Medal of Achievement to the outgoing ambassador last Monday.

The Order of Sikatuna is an order of diplomatic merit conferred upon individuals who have rendered exceptional services to the Philippines.

Malacañang recognized Zhao for his “vital role in a growing and more robust bilateral relationship between the Philippines and China.”

The House of Representatives meanwhile commended Zhao for fostering “stronger bonds of very good friendship between the Philippines and China” which led to the “golden age of Philippines-China bilateral relations.”

Lawmakers credited Zhao for facilitating 4 state visits of President

Rodrigo Duterte to China and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the Philippines in 2018, the first state visit by a Chinese president to the country in 13 years.

Under Zhao’s tour of duty, lawmakers said China became the Philippines’ top trading partner and more Chinese tourists arrived in the country.

Carpio, however, pointed out that in November 2018, Zhao wrote an article in The Philippine Star where he hailed China’s and the Philippines’ close geographic proximity and blood and cultural ties.

“Being separated by only a narrow strip of water, China and the Philippines have been close neighbors for centuries, sharing not only geographic proximity, but also blood bonds, cultural affinity and a long and sincere traditional friendship,” Zhao said, before touting the progress in Chinese-Philippine bilateral ties.

Carpio offered a different take on Zhao’s statement.

“Ambassador Zhao was saying to the entire Filipino people, the Philippines and China are already close neighbors because the nine-dash line is China’s national boundary in the South China Sea, leaving the Philippines with only a sliver of water as its territorial sea and exclusive economic zone,” he explained.

The nine-dash line is China’s basis for claiming rights over much of the South China Sea. But the 2016 South China Sea arbitral tribunal ruling rejected this claim as having no legal basis in international law.

Carpio, who retired from the Supreme Court last month, has been a staunch critic of the Philippine government’s stance on the West Philippine Sea issue and its refusal to enforce the arbitral ruling.

He reiterated these criticisms Thursday, saying there are several ways to enforce the arbitral tribu-

nal’s ruling without having to resort to war, the prospect of which President Duterte often cites in justifying his position.

“The Duterte administration however has chosen to put aside the arbitral ruling in exchange for loans and investments from China. These loans and investments have not been coming as promised, as admitted by Foreign Secretary Teddyboy Locsin,” he said in his speech.

ASEAN pushes sea code

10-member bloc wants binding deal in 3 years LEADERS of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations want to finish a binding Code of Conduct in the South China Sea within three years or earlier.

This was the sentiment expressed in the ASEAN common statement ready by President Rodrigo Duterte at the 22nd ASEAN-China Summit held in Thailand on November 3.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the 10-member regional bloc greeted China on its 70th anniversary and said ASEAN and China should improve further discussions on political security through regular high-level meetings and coordination.

President Rodrigo Duterte also reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to maintain and promote peace, security, stability, and safety in the South China Sea, he said.

In particular, Duterte reaffirmed the regional bloc’s shared hope to conclude an effective and substantive Code of Conduct within three years.

He also reiterated his suggestion that ASEAN members exercise self-restraint despite territorial disputes over the South China Sea—even as he spoke out against reclamation and militarization in the disputed waters.

Aside from the Philippines, other claimants to some parts of the South China Sea are Brunei Darussalam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam while China claims virtually all of the South China Sea as part of its territory.

The Philippines is claiming three islands in the disputed sea—Mischief Reef, Second Thomas Shoal, and Reed Bank, which are part of the country’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

Mischief Reef is also known as Panganiban Reef in the Philippines, Second Thomas Shoal is known as Ayungin Shoal, and Reed Bank as Recto Bank.

In 2016, the Philippines won the arbitral case on the territorial dispute against China after the United Nations Arbitral Tribunal favored the Philippines.

The decision stated that the three islands “are submerged at high tide, form part of the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of the Philippines, and are

not overlapped by any possible entitlement of China.”

China, however, has refused to recognize the court or its decision.

Meanwhile, Duterte said the region “is also anticipating the full and effective implementation of the ASEAN-China Trade Area since the world’s second largest economy is the regional bloc’s largest trading partner, third largest external source foreign direct investments and an important source of tourists.”

The Palace on Sunday shrugged off China’s move to block a Liberian-flagged ship manned by a Filipino captain in Panatag Shoal, saying it does not concern the country.

Panelo said the alleged blocking of the Greek-owned oil tanker M/T Green Aura was not an aff ront to the country’s sovereignty, even if Panatag Shoal lies about 120 miles west of Subic Bay and is within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

“In a way, it’s not our concern, because it’s not a Philippine vessel,” Panelo said on the sidelines of the 35th ASEAN Summit in Thailand.

“Well, for as long as they do not touch the Philippine ship or vessel, it would be the concern of that country that carries the flag of that particular vessel,” he added.

Although the Chinese vessel insisted that Panatag Shoal is within Chinese territory, Panelo maintained that the Philippines has nothing to do with the incident.

Maritime expert Jay Batongbacal slammed Panelo for his remarks, saying the Palace official should refrain from speaking about foreign policy matters.

Batongbacal, who also serves as director of the UP Institute for Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea, said the government should take action on the incident because the country “relies on foreign-flagged vessels for international trade” and China’s actions undermine the maritime interests of the Philippines.

“This is just so wrong on several levels. When will someone stop Panelo from speaking out of turn on matters of foreign policy?” he asked in a Twitter post Monday.

He also said the Philippines should not stay silent in the face of China’s assertion of jurisdiction over Panatag

Shoal, which was considered a traditional fishing ground in the 2016 arbitral ruling.

“Silence on China’s assertion of ‘jurisdiction’ against a Greek vessel, a third party, is effectively a sign of acquiescence to such jurisdiction before such third party; and in this case, due to publicity, effectively before the whole world,” he said.

In response, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said getting involved in the incident would harm the livelihood of Filipino mariners.

“We stick our noses in and 400,000 Filipino mariners get embroiled in a maritime issue about which our only interest is the safety of the parts of the crew who just happen to be Filipino and were not harmed,” he said.

“Want the employment 400,000 Pinoy mariners to hang in the balance of the games an idiot native media likes to play? Now that’s harming their livelihoods,” he added.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the incident should not be “blown out of proportion or sensationalized,” as M/T Green Aura was able to pass through the area despite the encounter with a Chinese vessel.

Lorenzana said that an official report on the alleged blocking of M/T Green Aura has been forwarded to the National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea. The M/T Green Aura was shooed away last Sept. 30 by a Chinese vessel which identified itself as a “Chinese Navy warship.”

The ship’s captain, Manolo Ebora, insisted that he can pass through the area, citing the right to innocent passage, but the “Chinese Navy” insisted that they change course.

Two Chinese ships crisscrossed the oil tanker, while another temporarily blocked its way.

Ebora, however, ignored the order and eventually got through the Chinese ships.

Panelo said the incident would not affect the continuing negotiations on the creation of a Code of Conduct between the ASEAN-member states and China.

Sale of US rifles to PH a 'work in progress': envoy MANILA — Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez on Thursday night said talks are still ongoing on Manila's intent to buy some 74,000 M-16 assault rifles from the US to help address communist insurgency and fight terrorism in the country. "(It's a) work in progress," Romualdez told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in a text message.

The statement comes as Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. reiterated on Thursday that the government is waiting for Washington to act on its request to provide the arms.

To recall, a resolution was earlier introduced into the US Congress, calling on the Philippine government to free detained Senator Leila de Lima and drop charges against online news site Rappler CEO Maria Ressa. 5. I Signed a Document Stating I am an Independent Contractor.

It is unlikely that an in-home caregiver is an independent contractor under the law even if you have signed a document saying so. Still, it is popular for private employers to try to convince you that you are an independent contractor and pay you as one because it is much less costly and much more advantageous for them.

The reality is that many private employers misclassify caregivers as independent contractors to avoid paying overtime.

In many cases, a document stating a caregiver is an “independent contractor” will have little impact on the caregiver’s ability to recoup unpaid overtime. Often, the employers retain so much control of a caregivers duties the true facts of the employment will overcome any purported agreement.

6. I Did Not Pay Taxes on The Wages I Did Receive.

While we recommend that our clients pay all taxes owed for the wages received, if you have not paid taxes on your wages, you still have the right to seek the overtime wages you are due. It is the employer’s obligation to properly classify you as an employee and withhold state and federal income taxes from your paychecks. If this has not happened, it is also problematic for your employer who has violated the law. The most important thing to understand is that it does not impact your ability to recover unpaid overtime.

7. I Do Not Want to Get Involved in a Long Court Battle, and I May Leave the Country.

Most cases settle without going to court, and many cases settle within a matter of a few months to a year. We regularly have clients who return to their home countries while the case is ongoing. All we need is the ability to contact you and have you return if necessary for the case. Because the laws are so strong in favor of the caregiver, most employers seek an early settlement of claims.

Bawal hubad: Pasay bans going shirtless in public MANILA — The local government of Pasay is reminding residents that they would face penalties should they go half-naked in public.

A city ordinance approved in June bans everyone above the age of 18 from going shirtless outside their home to promote "decency and high moral outlook," said Pasay Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano.

Violators risk a P2,000 fine or 12 hours of community service in the first offense, which can grow to a P4,000 fine and/or 24hour community service in the third offense, the Pasay government said in a Facebook post.

Villar backs Duterte's plan to ban plastic use MANILA — The chairperson of the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources on Friday backed President Rodrigo Duterte's recent pronouncement regarding the possibility of a nationwide ban on the use of plastics.

Senator Cynthia Villar said the possible ban is urgent as she cited a 2015 report on plastic pollution by the international group Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey Center for Business and Environment showing that the Philippines is one of the world’s largest producers of plastic wastes that end up in the ocean.

“With the President taking the lead in this campaign, I am confident we will be making significant headway and finally remove us from that disconcerting title as one of the world’s largest producers of plastic wastes,” Villar said.

Villar has filed Senate Bill No. 333 or the Single-Use Plastic Product Regulation Act, which seeks to regulate the manufacturing, importation, and use of single-use plastic products.

“With our dependence on agriculture, plastic pollution also poses a grave threat to our food security. Disaster risks and hazards arising from plastic pollution may put farms at risk of flooding resulting in wastage of agricultural products along with its threats to a balanced ecology,” Villar said.

“Microplastics leaked in our bodies of water may also put public health at risk as it gets into our food chain,” Villar added.

The bill proposes to prohibit the issuance of the single-use plastics by food establishments, stores, markets, and retailers.

Consumers will also be diverted to use reusable materials and manufacturers will be mandated to collect, recycle and dispose of single-use plastics manufactured or in circulation in the general market.

Under the measure, retailers VILLAR shall charge the consumer a

minimum levy of PHP5 for each piece of single-use plastics already manufactured, in circulation, and for use in a transaction.

The bill seeks to penalize violations of business enterprises, micro, small and medium enterprises with a fine ranging from PHP10,000 to PHP100,000 and suspension or revocation of business permit.

Meanwhile, value-added tax (VAT) registered enterprises, establishments, and stores, and for all plastics manufacturers found violating this proposed act will have penalties ranging from a fine of PHP100,000 to PHP1 million and suspension or revocation of business permit.

The bill also creates a Special Fund for Single-use Plastic Regulation composed of collected tariffs, levies, and fees, which shall be used for the establishment of recycling centers, and assistance and incentives for manufacturers and community-based initiatives for the reduction of single-use plastics.

President Duterte raised the proposal to prohibit the use of plastics during his “productive” discussions with Cabinet members at Malacañang Palace on Wednesday night.

“The President floated the idea to ban the use of plastics, which according to him would require legislative action,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

The Philippines uses a “shocking” amount of single-use plastic, including nearly 60 billion sachets a year, according to a March 2019 article published by Agence France-Presse, quoting the report by the non-government organization Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives.

The report found out that almost 48 million shopping bags are used throughout the Philippines daily, adding up to more than 17 billion a year.

It noted that the figure excludes around 16.5 billion smaller, thinner, and transparent plastic bags used every year across the country. (PNA)

Jobseekers warned about fake job ads using POEA logo MANILA — The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) on Tuesday named ‘bogus’ social media accounts that use name and logo of POEA to entice Filipinos looking for employment opportunities abroad.

POEA Administrator Bernard Olalia said the fake POEA Facebook pages are not verified or approved by the agency to advertise job vacancies in countries like Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and the United States.

He identified the bogus FB accounts as POEA Job Hirings in New Zealand, POEA Jobs Online, OFW POEA Jobs Abroad, POEA Jobs Abroad, POEA Job Hiring USA, POEA Job Hiring Australia, POEA Job Hiring UK, POEA Job Agency Hiring, POEA Trabaho Abroad Hiring, POEA Jobs in Dubai, Work Abroad-POEA Licensed Company and POEA Accredited Licensed Agency.

Olalia said the FB page “POEA Job Hirings in New Zealand” was reported to have posted ads of supposed job vacancies of Honda New Zealand.

“The company has since denied any active recruitment activity in the Philippines or any country outside New Zealand,” Olalia said in a statement.

He said facebook.com/poea.gov.ph is the official Facebook account of the POEA. “It has a blue checkmark signifying that it is authentic as verified by Facebook itself,” he added.

Olalia warned the applicants not to use the fake POEA FB accounts.

He also urged them to confirm first with the POEA the validity of the jobs offered through email and social media by using the online verification system at the website poea.gov.ph or by calling telephone hotlines 8722-1144 and 8722-1155. (PNA)

Statewide California RENT control in effect come 2020

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1482 on Tuesday, enacting rent control in California, when “no one thought this could be done.” He signed the legislation—which is designed to guard tenants against the most “egregious” rent hikes—as part of a press conference and housing tour in Oakland.

Once the law is in effect on January 1, the state will begin to regulate how much Californians’ rent can increase every year, limiting it to 5 percent, plus the local rate of inflation. The rules, however, will vary for cities that already have rent control laws. The measure will expire in 2030 (unless lawmakers vote to extend it).

Many economists say this Rent Control Act can make problems worse for renters in the long run by cutting into landlords’ profits and encouraging them to get out of the rental business.

Rent Caps Previously in California cities without rent control, there was no ceiling on how much landlords could increase the rent. With the new law, landlords are limited to a 5% increase (plus inflation) each year for the next ten years. For example, if rent is $2000, a landlord would be able to make an increase of $100 (5%) each year. This increase does not include inflation; once inflation is accounted for, the total increase may range from 8%-9%.

Eviction Laws Before this law was enacted, a landlord who wanted to sell their property

or make major renovations had the option to terminate a tenant’s lease agreement. This is known as a “nofault just cause” eviction, since the tenant is being asked to leave through no fault of their own, but the landlord has reasonable justification for asking them to leave.

Under the new law, landlords may still engage in no-fault just cause evictions for tenants who have been living on the property for less than a year.

However, once a tenant has lived on the property for a year or more, all evictions must be “just cause” evictions. This means a landlord can only evict their tenant for lease violations, non-payment of rent, and committing a nuisance or waste to the property.

If a landlord still wants a tenant to leave and does not have just cause, they may still evict their tenant provided they offer them relocation assistance in the form of one month’s rent. Landlords could either give their tenants the money directly or waive the last month’s rent.

Who is exempt from California rent control?

While the law is state-wide, it does not apply to every property. Properties built within the last 15 years are exempt from the new law. The law does not apply to single family homes, unless they are owned by corporations.

Owner-occupied housing (including duplexes) is also exempt, provided the owner does not rent out more than two rooms or units. This includes Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

The new law does not override existing rent control laws at the local level.

If the rent increase was less than the 5% plus inflation cap, landlords will be permitted to raise the rent twice within a 12 month period from March 15, 2019 to March 15, 2020. Under no circumstances should the total amount of these two increases exceed the 5% plus inflation cap.

How does the new California rent control law affect landlords?

Landlords can no longer raise the rent however much they want. Even if their expenses are higher than their rental income, they must still adhere to the law. In this way, many landlords feel that rent control is a direct threat to their business.

Rent control creates a much more long-term relationship between the landlord and tenant; tenants are less likely to move, and it’s harder for a landlord to evict them. Increased eviction regulations gives landlords less freedom in how they want to use their property. Any renovations that would force their tenants to move are no longer acceptable unless the landlord pays relocation assistance.

Will rent control help alleviate the housing crisis in California?

There are several challenges facing California renters. One is rental price.

The other is housing availability.

Economists explain the problem through supply and demand. Since

The Immigration Marriage Fraud Amendments of 1986 (IMFA) requires an alien obtaining a green card through a marriage less than two years old to come back at the end of that two years with the petitioning spouse and show that they are still married or, if the marriage was terminated, to show that the marriage was entered in good faith before the USCIS will issue them a permanent (unconditional) green card.

Any alien who obtains a green card through a spousal petition by virtue of a marriage entered less than twenty four months before the status is obtained will only receive a conditional green card under INA §216(d).

To remove this condition, both spouses must file a form I-751 with the USCIS within 90 day period preceding the expiration of the conditional green card along with other supporting documents showing the marriage was entered in good faith.

However, sometimes alien spouses are not able to file this Joint Petition to remove the condition on their green card because the couple got divorced or are in the process of filing a divorce and is having difficulties getting the cooperation of the US citizen spouse.

When the alien spouse falls into this situation, it is still possible for them to obtain their permanent green card by filing a waiver. The waiver must be based on one of the following reasons 1) Extreme hardship would result if such alien is removed 2) The qualifying marriage was entered in good faith by the alien spouse, but … has been terminated (divorce or annulled), and the alien was not at fault in failing to timely file the joint petition and attend the interview; or 3) The qualifying marriage was entered into in good faith by the alien spouse and during the marriage the alien spouse or child was battered by or was the subject of extreme cruelty perpetrated by the US citizen parent or permanent resident

demand for California housing is high and supply is low, the rental price increases. Building more housing would increase the supply, but some economists point to rent control as a limiting factor. They believe rent control discourages new housing construction since developers are less likely to make a profit with increased regulations. For this reason, they claim rent control will exacerbate the housing shortage in California. The new law attempts to address this by exempting housing built within the last 15 years.

Proponents of the bill claim rent control gives some pricing stability in a market where—if market forces were left unchecked—prices would continue to rise faster than wage increases. Tenants will no longer see rent prices double, an occurrence not unheard of in high-priced areas when a property comes under new ownership. Proponents also believe the bill protects tenants against evictions and homelessness by giving them a stronger guarantee for housing.

For new investors, this sign of weakness in the rental market could be an opportunity, as long as your cap rate and cash of cash is above 4%, I believe its always good to invest in rentals.

Here’s the Quickest Way To Pay Off Your Credit Cards

A LoT of people who are burdened with credit card debt often don’t know where to turn for help. They see all the ads on TV, internet, etc. by so-called “debt consolidation” or “debt settlement” companies hoping that this will get them out of debt without filing for bankruptcy. More often than not, however, they end up either getting scammed or disappointed when those companies cannot deliver the big promises made.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that when they hire a debt settlement company, it doesn’t mean that they are now legally protected from their creditors as long as they are making their monthly payments to the debt settlement company. The debt settlement company, after deducting their fees, simply saves the money in a trust account and will only be able to settle with creditors one by one as money accumulates.

So, if they put you on a 3-5 year plan, that means there will be a very long wait for creditors.

Most of these creditors will not wait that long to get paid, and if they sue you, the debt settlement company is not going to be able to represent you because they are not lawyers. In the meantime, your debts are still growing because of the added interest, penalties and other collection costs. This is NOT the best way to consolidate your bills. While you are on their program, the creditors will also continue to report damaging information on your credit report until the debt is paid. This is not what you want, is it? Of course, the debt settlement companies will not tell you that.

In my opinion, if you wish to consolidate your bills, there is nothing better than doing it through a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Here are the advantages: (1) You pay 0% interest on credit cards and other unsecured debts. This means all your payments go towards principal. (2) You can be totally debt-free in 3-5 years, (3) In most cases, you only pay based on what you can afford, not based on how much you owe, (4) Your monthly debt payments can be slashed by at least half in most cases, allowing you to have extra money for other expenses, and (5) All kinds of debts can be included in Chapter 13, not just credit cards. So if you have unpaid taxes, medical bills, payday loans, personal loans, student loans, late mortgage payments, etc., all of these can be included in one affordable monthly payment.

So if you are struggling every single month even just making minimum payments, you’re probably feeling frustrated because you realize that there is just no way that you can pay all your debts anytime soon. Some people get stressed out once they realized that they owe so much that it is simply not possible to ever become debt-free with the amount of debt they have accumulated given their monthly income. Well, Chapter 13 can be a game changer for you. If you have not explored this legal option, perhaps you should.

Finally, the greatest advantage of filing Chapter 13 vs. hiring a debt settlement company is that in Chapter 13, you are 100% protected from all creditor lawsuits, judgments, liens, garnishments, etc. Once your creditors are notified of the filing, they also cannot report you as being late to the credit bureaus anymore. Your credit report will show that your debts are being paid through Chapter 13. Seven years after filing a 13, the bankruptcy will be deleted from your credit report. If you need to purchase a home or a car while in Chapter 13, this is also possible provided that you obtain court approval for the purchase. This is quite common.

'TO" kicked off in Manila on July 12, 2019, and they have entertained worldwide since, including the Canada, Europe and culminating here in the US. Their concert here in Los Angeles was held last Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the John Wayne Performing Arts Center, in Glendale, California.

Previously, this writer had a brief encounter with singer, Angeline Quinto two years ago, when she graced a press conference at the Mayflower Restaurant before her concert here in Los Angeles.

Though she has built quite a following of fans back home, some of us are unaware of the numerous hit songs that

During dinner, a variety of upcoming musical entertainers were presented, including: Hezelle San Gabriel, Aliahnna Daling, Mady Aquino, Cheryll Aquino, Geraldine Ortega and Illiasel Tan. Most entertaining of all was Mary Ann Mwah, owner of Level Up Salon who surprised us with her rendition of Donna Summer's "Last Dance" song.

ongratulatory messages flooded Matteo Guidicelli’s Instagram page Thursday as the actor shared photos of him with his longtime girlfriend Sarah Geronimo, who is noticeably wearing what appears to be a diamond ring.

“I love you my love, now and forever,” Gudicelli captioned the photos, where he is seen beaming with the pop superstar.

Within minutes of Guidicelli’s post, hundreds of friends and fans left comments congratulating the couple, with many speculating the two are finally engaged to wed.

While Guidicelli did not directly mention an engagement, his younger brother, Paolo, confirmed that Geronimo will indeed become a part of their family, officially.

Paolo congratulated the couple in his own Instagram post, and in his Stories updates, hinted that the milestone wasn’t new.

“Nobody found out. It was a secret,” he wrote.

Guidicelli, 29, and Geronimo, 31, first confirmed their relationship in 2014, after nearly a year of being officially together.

Already assured of a coveted ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Yulo did the country proud by ruling the men's floor exercise final with a score of 15.300 in the 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships on Octobet 12 in Stuttgart, Germany.

The 19-year-old gymnast from Leveriza bested Artem Dolgopyat of Israel (15.200) and Ruoteng Xiao (14.933) of China to become the first Southeast Asian male gymnast to win a gold in the World Championships.

Last year, Yulo also made history as the first Filipino to win a bronze in the world artistic gymnastics championships in Doha, Qatar.

Yulo was also selected to be one of the flag bearers in the 30th Southeast Asian Games where he hopes to win it all in the gymnastics tournament scheduled December 1 to 9 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.

"Like many other great Filipino athletes before him, Caloy Yulo made all of us proud to be Filipinos," said TOPS president Ed Andaya of People's Tonight.

In an interview on ANC's "Headstart" on Friday, Dixson said she and her long-time partner are "still in the process" of having a baby through surrogacy.

"Well my personal journey is super personal, pero sige I will share it. We are still in the process of surrogacy.

My partner and I, oo. So I have not given up on that. I think this is our last year to try," she said.

The 50-year-old actress went on to explain why they have turned to surrogacy to have a baby.

After 50 years, the future beckons for the Cultural Center of the Philippines

F

or many Filipinos, their first formal introduction to the arts as an audience may have transpired at the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, which has recently marked its golden anniversary. They may have climbed the curving steps leading to the lobby, where they would be greeted by the shimmering chandeliers in the lobby and a breathtaking view of the fountain and the rim of the city beyond.

Inside the theater, they may have gazed at the tapestry after the work, Creation,

by National Artist H.R. Ocampo, before partaking in the magic of whatever it was on the stage: a dance recital, an orchestra performance, a showcase of an independent film.

As the country’s premier arts institution, CCP’s contribution to the development of the Filipino talent, imagination, and sensibility is incontestable as it reckons with its difficult history.

Perhaps, even the most vocal of critics would agree: arts and culture is unimaginable without it. Though its power and reach lie beyond its edifices, it calls the Main Building as its home, which also marks its 50th year. Half-a-century is a long time for any building, especially one that is constantly used for performances almost daily and welcomes thousands of visitors each week.

“Our home needs some major TLC (tender loving care),” stated CCP chairperson Margie Moran-Floreindo during “Bulawan: CCP 50th Anniversary Concert,” a two-night event that featured a medley of performances from its resident companies and some of the best local and international performers. “The Main Building is now in need of major renovation and technical upgrading, if it is to remain a cultural landmark and a leading showcase of the performing arts.”

Directed by and designed by Loy Arcenas, the showcase was split into two acts, with the first part revolving around the development of the Filipino identity through centuries, while the second shined a spotlight on the Filipino talent the world stage and with international collaborations.

“Bulawan” was proof positive of how CCP has immensely contributed to the national patrimony with the dazzling performances of the companies it has taken under its wing: Ballet Philippines, Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company, National Music Competitions for Young Artists, Philippine Madrigal Singers, Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group, Tanghalang Pilipino, UST Symphony Orchestra, and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Individual performances were by pianist and former CCP president Raul Sunico who played “Liebestod” and “Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan” and

If “Bulawan” was a good argument for people’s continued support of the CCP, as it anticipates a future in which arts and culture become more accessible and relevant to people. Unfortunately, audio bursts interrupted some of the performances which made Celeste Legaspi, one of the night’s hosts, to quip: “This is why we need to raise funds.” The next 50 years of the Cultural Center of the Philippines is an exciting prospect as it enters its next stage as the Grand Dame of Philippine Arts. Choosing the wrong pillow can exacerbate headaches and neck and shoulder tension. Taking time to determine what the best pillow is for you based on your sleeping habits and personal needs will help ensure that you wake up refreshed and ready for your day.

MORCON is a Filipino-style beef roll. Stuffed with hardboiled eggs, sweet pickles, hotdog or chorizo slices, this beef dish is usually served during parties and holidays, like Christmas!

If this party recipe intimidates you, don't let it! While this dish involves a lot of prep, it's a simple recipe with a lot of ingredients but the results are well worth the effort.

What's so great is that you can ask your butcher to prepare your beef for you even before you leave the supermarket! Just pick out the meat you want - or ask which is best for morcon! - and come back for it nicely cut to the right thickness and ready to roll and stuff.

You can also get creative with the stuffing: add bacon, chorizo, sausage, or cheese to this Pinoy-style beef roulade.

The thick, rich, and tangy tomato sauce adds a layer of flavor to this party-worthy dish. We're sure you'll appreciate the serving of beef morcon served to you at the next family gathering.

Jang Jin-mo, one of Korea’s leading chefs, gave a sample of his culinary expertise during a dinner hosted

by South Korean Ambassador Han Dong-man at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Taguig City Wednesday night.

Invited guests included Foreign Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin Jr., National Security Adviser Secretary Hermogenes C. Esperon Jr., and Central Bank Governor Benjamin Diokno, among others.

Arrange each beef slice between two parchment paper or cling wrap. With a meat mallet, pound to about ½-inch thick (or thinner). Repeat the process with remaining beef slices. Trim sides of meat to shape it as close to a rectangle.

2. In a bowl, combine the beef, lemon juice, soy sauce and pepper to taste. Marinate for 30 minutes.

3. Drain the beef from marinade, squeezing any excess liquid and reserving marinade.

4. Lay the beef on a flat work surface and arrange strips of carrots, hotdogs, pickles, and eggs lengthwise over the meat. Gently gather end of the beef upwards and roll neatly into a log, enclosing the filling. With kitchen twine, tie beef roulades snugly at both ends and center to fully secure. Lightly dredge with flour.

5. Heat the oil in a wide, heavy-bottomed pan. Gently add the beef roll and lightly brown on all sides. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.

6. Discard the oil from skillet except about 1 tablespoon.

Add the onion and garlic and cook until browned.

7. Add the reserved marinade and bring to a boil, scraping sides to deglaze pan. Add the tomato sauce and beef broth. Add the bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

8. Bring to a boil. Gently add the beef rolls in a single layer. Lower the heat, cover, and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour of until beef is tender.

9. Remove the beef rolls from the pan and allow to stand for 3 to 5 minutes. Slice into 1-inch thick rounds and arrange the slices on serving platter. Keep warm.

10. Add the liver spread into the sauce and stir until dissolved. Continue to cook for 5 minutes or until the sauce is thickened. Pour the sauce over morcon slices and serve hot.

It was virtually “a taste of Korea’s finest” food as Jang demonstrated his culinary expertise by cooking Korean-style marinated beef with mushroom puree as the main dish, a steamed ginger seabass, soy sauce, sesame seeds, mirin, spring onion, and courgette ribbons, and a seafood soup with winter melon, scallops.

The appetizer was a raw fish, gochujang, pickle with fresh walnut, and the dessert was white chocolate red bean mousse with mango cream, and a freshly brewed Korean traditional tea.

Jin-mo, a chef for 10 years, is co-owner of a popular restaurant in South Korea.

He was given a standing ovation by the guests, who were very much satisfied with his culinary expertise in Korean food.

In his short welcome remarks, Han noted that many Filipinos are patronizing Korean restaurants not only in Manila, but also in the provinces.

He also said Koreans and Filipinos cook similar food such as pancit, and bulalo, and prepare the popular halo-halo. (PNA)

Coffee drinkers have healthier gut microbiotas

ew research suggests that heavy coffee drinkers have healthier compositions of bacteria in their

guts.

More and more research is unpacking the health benefits of drinking coffee.

Drinking just one cup may fight off unhealthy fat, ease inflammation associated with obesity, or even protect the brain into old age.

Furthermore, drinking at least three cups of coffee every day may keep arteries healthy and supple by preventing a calcium buildup and staving off the risk of clogging.

Coffee could also help fight off diabetes by improving blood sugar control and can keep the liver healthy and "happy."

But how exactly coffee yields all of these wonderful health benefits has remained somewhat of a mystery.

New research shines some light on the mechanisms behind coffee's effects by looking at the links between coffee and the health of the gut microbiota.

Dr. Li Jiao is the senior and corresponding author of the study. Dr. Jiao is an associate professor of medicine–gastroenterology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, and a researcher at the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness, and Safety at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

Dr. Shawn Gurwara, also from Baylor College, who is the first author of the paper, presented the findings at the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) 2019 Annual Scientific Meeting, which took place in San Antonio, TX. Looking into the gut microbiota "The beneficial roles of coffee consumption in metabolic diseases have previously been shown," Dr. Jiao told Medical News Today. "We set out to examine whether phytochemical 'caffeine' in coffee would account for this

beneficial effect."

Dr. Jiao and team looked at "the association between caffeine consumption and the composition and structure of the colonic-gut microbiota."

To do so, the scientists asked Medical NewsToday 34 participants to undergo a screening colonoscopy and endoscopy to confirm the health of their colons.

The researchers obtained 97 "snap-frozen colonic mucosa biopsies" from various segments of these individuals' colons, extracted microbial DNA, and performed 16s rRNA sequencing analysis.

The participants answered a self-administered food frequency questionnaire to evaluate the daily intake of coffee. The team divided coffee intake into high coffee consumption — that is, at least 82.9 milligrams (mg) per day — and low coffee consumption, that is, less than 82.9 mg daily.

The effects of coffee on the gut The analyses revealed that high caffeine consumers had high levels of the bacterial genera Faecalibacterium and Roseburia, but low levels of Erysipelatoclostridium — a "potentially harmful" bacterial genus.

The research team found these associations regardless of the participants' age or the quality of their diets.

Although part of a normal healthy gut, excessive levels of Erysipelatoclostridium ramosum (E. ramosum) may be harmful.

Previous studies in humans have linked E. ramosum with metabolic syndrome, and animal studies found links with "upregulation of small intestinal glucose and

Dela Peña recently visited Trieste, a region in Italy, which he described as having a dense network of academic and scientific institutions.

The authors conclude: "Higher caffeine consumption was associated with increased richness and evenness of the mucosa-associated gut microbiota, and higher relative abundance of anti-inflammatory bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium and Roseburia and lower levels of potentially harmful Erysipelatoclostridium."

Strengths and limitations of the study Dr. Jiao also commented on the strengths and limitations of the research. The fact that the study examined the mucosa-associated gut microbiome set it apart from most studies, which center on the fecal microbiome, she said.

However, she cautioned, "the study was conducted in 34 adult men who had [a] normal colon in a single hospital. It is unknown whether these preliminary results can be applied to women or other populations."

Furthermore, said Dr. Jiao, "We used the 16S rRNA gene sequencing that cannot tell which bacterial species are important."

Also, the self-reported diet data did not give the researchers information about how the coffee was made or which brands the participants used.

Finally, "We cannot tease out whether polyphenol or other compounds in coffee may also partially explain the association," said Dr. Jiao.

"We need [to] learn more about the interaction between the host and gut microbiome in diverse populations," Dr. Jiao added. "More research is needed to understand what these bacteria (such as Alistipes) do in our body." (medicalnewstoday.com)

Both lakes, divided with a very thin strip of land in between them, offers sightseers a refreshing plunge in its waters or just a natural view for capturing moments on your phone or camera. Palakpakin, Bonut, and Mohicap Lakes are simply not as attractive if your main aim is to look for the most beautiful site. There’s not much that you can see here, but you can surely learn about the local way of life in San Pablo. 5. An intriguing piece of Philippine culture An 800 hectare (1976.84 acre) coconut plantation and an estate has opened its doors as a resort, offering tours to the village and a museum.

It is also a great stop for food and a nice accommodation. Owned and founded by Don Plácido Escudero and his wife, Doña Claudia Marasigan, in 1872, this site was originally a sugarcane plantation. Their son, Don Arsenio Escudero, converted the plantation to a coconut plantation in the Bato Springs

65-year-old woman from Cebu City is opening her home to the public who would like to see and take pictures of her Christmas miniature-scale houses she personally collected over the years.

Nenette Paulin’s Christmas village is displayed inside her home in Barangay Sambag Uno. Each one has a story to tell.

From skiing miniature men to carousels, Santas in moving tea cups— this lit menagerie of Christmas houses stand tall on painted white laden tables for all of her family, friends and anyone to see.

"If you really want to put up a Christmas village, you don’t have to start it big right away. Every year you buy something new and it becomes very fulfilling that through the years, you'll be able to multiply it. You just have to take care of the pieces," Paulin said.

Nenette's fascination in collecting Christmas houses started in the year 1954. At the beginning, she only had five pieces. Now, she owns almost 60 Christmas houses, train collection, and other Christmas decorative pieces.

She personally bought most of her collection during travels abroad. Some were given by friends and family who live overseas.

The theme for her Christmas village this year is white and traditional Christmas.

"I want it white this year, no red for the meantime, because my mom just passed away. When she was still well and energetic she would help me set up the village. At night, we will see it lit together,” she said.

Aside from the Christmas village, another attraction at Paulin’s home is her collection of the nativity scene.

To go with the theme, her giant Christmas tree is also well-decorated with white Christmas balls, snowflakes and white stuffed squirrel toys.

Also a must-see inside her home is her mini- Nutcracker theater in which ballerinas would dance to the music.

She said her Gingerbread figurine collection at the corner of her house is something new this year.

Fil-Am actor Dante Basco launches first book

MANILA – He is known for his roles as Rufio in the 1991 film “Hook” and Zuko in the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

And it is only but appropriate for Filipino-American actor Dante Basco to have “From Rufio to Zuko” as the title of his first book – a memoir detailing his life and work.

Basco recently launched his book, which is under the publishing company Not a Cult, in Los Angeles, California.

On Instagram, he expressed his gratitude to all those who expressed their support: “I’m overwhelmed by all the love and support from friends and family... it meant the

world to me that you guys came out!”

One of the things Basco discussed in his memoir is the seven-year period in which he and his family severed ties – a result of his pursuit of an entertainment career.

“It’s not always enjoyable to go back and look at things in your life,” he told NBC News.

“Things you’re not proud of, you definitely don’t want to confront; dark times you’ve already gotten over.

But maybe it’s a good thing to talk about, because it’s gonna maybe help the next generation of people coming in,” he added.

An up and coming singer named Elaine Bondoc was introduced during the initial segment of the show, but most noteworthy was brief appearance of comedienne/singer, Jo Awayan, whose stage presence is always remarkable, particularly with her Visayan quips and jokes such as "hirap talaga kumita ng pera dito!" And to the audience's delight, they sang along with her, as she belted out a rendition of Sampaguita's "Nosi Balasi," and Juan Karlos’ hit song “Buwan.”

Along with their musical director, Lori Ilustre, the duo of Angeline Quinto and K Brosas was such a delight. They sang a variety of their hit songs such as: "Kill This Love,"Naughty Girl,""Natatawa Ako, Kunin Mo Na Ang Lahar Sa Akin," 'Buwan," "Araw Araw/Gabi Gabi," "'Di Na Natuto," and Tagalog medleys such as:"Urong Sulong," "Mr.

Kupido," "Kapag Tumibok Ang Puso," "Patuloy Ang Pangarap," and "Anon'g Nangyari Sa Ating Dalawa." Additionally, both of them did some impersonation of other musical divas such as Shirley Bassey's "I who Have Nothing and "This Is My Life," particularly emoted by funnybone, K Brosas, Overall, their show was truly entertaining and once again, its resounding success was due to Amore Entertainment's large marketing staff.

It is indeed notable to stress that Amore Entertainment is the marketing and events division of Amore Culinary Innovations.founded in 2010 by its tenacious President and CEO, Amorfina "Pia" Legaspi. As a cancer survivor, her initial goal in establishing Amore Culinary Innovations was to "spread the benefits of healthy food preparation," to complement her entrepreneurial direct dealership of Saladmaster International. In the short span of only six years after establishing her company, in 2016, she has branched out to other businesses such as adding on Amore Care Services. For Pia, this additional company allows her and her staff to provide in-home caregivers for seniors throughout the Los Angeles area.

Blessed with a knack for business success, Pia went on to establish Amore Entertainment in 2017, and to date, she has presented seven high-quality international entertainment, such as the nostalgic concert of the "The Platters," (June, 2017),; "The Lettermen" (Sept. 30, 2017 and April 29, 2018); "Martin Nievera," ((November, 2018); John Claude Gummoe's "Cascades," (January 12, 2019); "Sharon Cuneta," (March 30, 2019); "Regine Velasquez-Alcasid,"(May 26, 2019) and "Jed Maddela," (July 27, 2019).

The unbelievable success of Pia Legaspi in entertainment was due to her earlier venture in 2007 when she produced the "South Border" and "Geneva Cruz,"at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, followed by a dance extravaganza in 2008 called "Best of the Best," also at the Glendale Civic. And, due to the success of that project, her entertainment vision opened up by producing the "La Ballroom Dancing Show," in 2014, which was held at the La Mirada Performing Arts Center in Orange County.

That said, it is with deep appreciation that kababayans here in Los Angeles are proud to have a creative and hardworking entrepreneur such as Pia Legaspi, whose mission is to bring happiness to the Filipino community, by producing various concerts, while at the same time raising funds for her Heart of Worship Community Church in Eagle Rock. For her, "charity and music go hand in hand, because she believes that these are her expressions of love for the Lord." Undoubtedly, Pia's success emanates from her deep religious passion and she's most grateful for all the blessings bestowed upon her.
