SC DUMPS TrUMP’S SCrAP DACA BID By ABNER GALINO

CALIfOrNIA Governor Gavin Newsom described the recent Supreme Court of the United States’ decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as “an important victory” for the almost 700,000 recipients of the said immigration program — about 200,000 of them are living in California.

California Governor Gavin Newsom

“They are our neighbors, our coworkers and our friends, and in California, we will continue to have their backs,” Newsom said in a statement sent to the media. “We need a permanent solution for undocumented Californians and acknowledge that a pathway to citizenship is not enough. This moment reminds us we are confronting the systemic injustice and

racism that exists within our nation and institutions. We will fight for everyone to be treated with dignity and respect.” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, for his part wrote on his Twitter page: "Today's Supreme Court ruling on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) delivers a powerful message: this country and this city belong to Dreamers today. WASHINGTON (June 15, 2020) – Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), Patrick Leahy (DVt.), and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) released the following joint statement regarding the conviction in the Philippines of journalist Maria Ressa. Ressa, founder of the news platform Rappler, and Reynaldo Santos Jr., former researcher-writer, were found guilty of “cyber libel” and may be imprisoned for up to six years. In an apparent effort to silence her, Ressa has been arrested multiple times after publishing articles that exposed the Duterte government’s role in extrajudicial killings and other abuses during anti-narcotics operations.
