During a speech in front of the hero’s monument in the Carson City Hall grounds, Dear said that Rizal was “not just a Filipino national hero but a great world leader.”

PHOENIX, AZ. — In the conference room of the Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center, a chair sat empty at a recent convening of community media and stakeholders to promote Arizona’s 2020 census.

Lizbeth Luna, regional director for NALEO’s Arizona census initiative, abruptly cancelled as a speaker, learning her father had been detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE). PHILIPPINE Senator Cynthia Villar took time out from her family vacation to speak at a Christmas Party of the Los Angeles Philippine Women’s Club (LAPWC) last Sunday (December 12, 2019).

The controversial Filipino senator told the crowd that she decided to come to the event because it was being hosted by a women’s group that was also of the oldest Filipino American organization.

The event was held at the Scientology Community Center in North Hollywood.

“Bilang isang babae, I want to help fellow women in all their endeavors for freedom and better life,” Villar said.

VILLAR... FROM PAGE 1 As the chairperson of the Senate committee on agriculture on food, Villar told the crowd how her office has been working on projects aimed at developing the country’s dairy and coconut industry.

Villar particularly mentioned the establishments of a so-called “dairy center for every province.”

The senator’s office has noted that the Philippine dairy industry can only produce 1% of the demand.

Villar said her office was also involve in creating processing centers for coconut water and coconut sugar in areas that are known for coconut production.

In the same speech, the Philippine senator also praised the overseas Filipinos for keeping the Philippine economy afloat, particularly through the $50 billion yearly remittances.

Villar said about half of the said amount comes from formal remittances of overseas Filipino workers and the other half were from informal remittances of Filipinos abroad who have mostly acquired other nationalities (chief of them Filipino Americans).

There are over 4 million Americans of Filipino ancestry in the US. Perla Santos, an LAPWC past president, told Weekend Balita/US Asian Post that she felt proud for the presence of the Philippine senator in the event.

Santos said she found Villar’s speech painted a bright outlook of the Philippine situation, particularly among farmers and fisherfolks.

To add prestige to LAWPC, Santos shared the following information: the LAPWC has earned the distinction of the only API organization whose name is in the marker of the Music Center.

Officially named the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, the Music Center is home to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theater, Mark Taper Forum and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

LAPWC supported the project by conducting a fashion show featuring the creations of notable Philippine couturier and generated net proceeds of $5,000 which submitted to the Music Center

The club earned the title of an Associate Founding Member of the Music Center, and its name is engraved permanently on the granite wall of the Music Center plus two brass plates engraved on the back of the chairs on the Founder’s Circle. In addition, the Club was allowed access and privilege to use the Founder’s Room.

This was where annual installation of officers and initiation of new members were held early on.

The LAPWC constitution, according to Caratao, accords the wives of Philippine consul generals assigned in Los Angeles honorary membership in their organization.

In June, the Supreme Court barred Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross from adding a question on citizenship to the Census 2020 form. The ruling was applauded by Katie Hobbs, Arizona’s Secretary of State, who supports a permanent ban on such an initiative. After the question’s dismissal, advocates continue to fear diminished participation in the census, particularly from the Latino community. Worries are the current administration will not respect the confidentiality of personal information, despite laws and fines discouraging the sharing of individual census responses among federal agencies.

At the convening, co-hosted by Ethnic Media Services, OneArizona, the Arizona Community Foundation and the Leadership Conference Education Fund, EMS executive director, Sandy Close encouraged attendees to collaborate in their messaging and outreach on Census 2020. Citing the decrease of traditional community media as one motivation, Close said the driving impetus for collaboration should be concern about the potential loss of census data-based funding for federal programs that contribute to children’s well-being. Children are the most likely to be undercounted and highly vulnerable to funding reductions.

“We, as media, need you, as community organizations, to extend your communication outreach, especially to populations that don’t have media outlets,” Close said.

“Today’s meeting is an effort to forge a consensus across ethnic groups, community organizations, state and local government groups and other stakeholders.

Do it for the kids.”

Jim Chang, state demographer, Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity, provided an overview of the state’s racial demographics. He projects that the decreasing and aging white population, currently comprising 54%, and the increasing, younger Latino one, now at 32%, would reach relative numerical parity by 2050 at 45% and 40% respectively.

The balance of the population, with no cohort above 5%, is comprised of Asians, blacks, Native Americans and others.

“A lot of people I talk to believe that, right now, the births to Hispanic mothers are higher than the births to non-His-

panic whites,” Chang said, “but that was true only one year, 2007.”

Since then, white, non-Hispanic women have led their Latina counterparts with no anticipated change through 2050. Importantly, Chang has seen estimates of Arizona’s 2010 census undercount of children at 4%, 7% and as high as 10%. “Every method has its flaws,” Chang said, but overall, compared to other states, Arizona did fairly well in its total population 2010 census assessment.

Alec Thompson, representing the Arizona governor’s office, acknowledged hard-to-count communities within the state where undercount percentages have been higher than those for children.

Though the state legislature rejected his budget request to fund census public education initiatives, he said Gov. Doug Ducey has about $1.5 million for paid media advertising.

“We are hoping to grow that number,” Thompson said, with media outreach as part of a plan that includes a complete count committee’s credible messengers to reach diverse communities. Government agencies will be directed to contact the customers they serve, for example, the state’s 6,000 foster parents will receive an email about the census.

Thompson said Arizona had spent no state money for 2010 census outreach due to fiscal caution after 2008’s recession. A key motivation to encourage 2020 census participation is a calculation that “a 1% undercount is a direct loss of $62 million to the state.”

Whitney Walker, director of communications and public policy for Protecting Arizona’s Family Coalition, (PAFCO), spoke to the need for more state level advocacy to bolster the housing trust fund and domestic violence shelters, among other initiatives that ameliorate “the cycle of poverty vulnerable Arizona families are facing.”

To her point, the annual Annie E. Casey Foundation’s KIDS COUNT Data Book on the status of American children living in poverty ranks Arizona at only 43rd in overall wellbeing for children.

In Arizona, immigration is a highly contested issue. Walker said the political climate can interfere with the dissemination of clear and concise information.

She didn’t dispute the assessment of Arizona’s 2010 census efforts, but noted that there was “a 30% undercount for Marico-

pa County, which now has a population of over four million people.”

Janice Palmer of the Helios Education Foundation, which focuses on Latino students’ academic success, underscored Walker’s observations: “Maricopa County had the second largest undercount of Latino children.” Using 7% as the projected undercount, she estimated, in that county alone, 27,000 Latino children were omitted from census 2010 data.

The Native American and Alaskan Native populations pose unique challenges to the census, according to Mark Trahant, editor of Indian Country Today.

“The primary problem for us is that it comes down to self-identification, and when you’re dealing with tribal communities, you’re talking about citizenship and a more complex way of looking at identity,” Trahant explained.

He added that ICT has been reporting for three years that the 2020 census has been in trouble, partly due to underfunding. In Alaska, he noted, two field tests were cancelled to save funds and, overall, a dearth of linguists available to translate census instructions and information into local languages.

For Trahant, paramount is how to transform Native American presence into political representation. Even with the recent election of Native Americans to Congress, he calculates they constitute less than three-quarters of one percent of that body, assuming Native Americans represent 2% of the population, which is itself “probably an undercount.”

To achieve accuracy, the Census Bureau will have to contend with Native Americans’ lack of broadband access and the difficulty of determining addresses in remote communities. Additionally, Trahant said tribal identification will be “a demographer’s nightmare” because many Native Americans have multiple tribal identifications in their family trees.

How will resources be fairly allocated, he mused?

D.L. White, reporting for The Arizona Informant, also raised the issue of accountability, asking state Rep. Diego Rodriguez – the convening’s fi nal speaker -- how an undercount could negatively affect funding for minority groups and refugee communities. Rodriguez responded that allocating funds is a result of horse trading at the heart of the budgeting process.

“We all agree that the budget represents your values,” Rodriguez said, but “we have to make sure our numbers are counted so that we get adequate representation.”

Acknowledging representatives from Somali, Congolese and other emerging refugee groups at the briefing, as well as from Native American, black and Latino populations, Tameka Spence of Arizona Community For Change emphasized that the first step is addressing the trauma many have experienced.

“In trying to help folks understand why the census is important, we’re asking them to confront that trauma and we need to acknowledge that it’s there, it’s real.”

Though the empty chair attested to the Luna family’s immediate trauma, the IndialSchool Visitor Center venue exuded optimism.

Once the site of a federally run school to socially re-engineer Native American students, Center director Rosalie Talahonva – herself an alumna -- recalled how students were drawn from different tribes often deeply at odds with each other as well as the U.S. government.

Whether antagonisms were ancient or personal, new or imagined, the students persevered, forging consensus and cooperation among themselves -- an inspiration for Arizona’s mosaic of stakeholders striving to achieve an accurate census count.

The said books, which were among the evidences used by the Spanish colonial government in the Philippines in the trial of Rizal for sedition, were circulated not only in the Philippines but as well as in Europe and Asia.

The books exposed the injustices being committed against the Filipino people and as well as revealed Rizal’s socio-political vision for his motherland.

Rizal, who lived from June 19, 1861 up to December 30, 1896, was way older than India’s Mahatma Gandhi and American civil rights Martin Luther King Jr. who were both known for leading non-violent movements for social change.

The Philippine national hero (a doctor by profession, writer and journalist) was publicly executed by the Spanish colonial government.

American leader in Carson, recalled how their family idolized Rizal so much that his grandfather named his son Jose (Jaime’s father) --- who also named his firstborn Jose (Jaime’s older brother).

Monteclaro, who was also a big fan of Rizal, also cited what he believed were the three most important quotes from the national hero: a. Youth is the hope of the motherland (Ang kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan), b. He who doesn’t know how to look back at where he came from will never get to his destination (Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi makakarating sa paroroonan) and c. He who does not love his own language is worse than an animal and smelly fish (Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika ay mahigit pa sa hayop at malansang isda).

In a related development, members of the Knights of Rizal (KOR) also conducted a wreath-laying ceremony at the Filipino Cultural Center at the Historic Filipinotown in Los Angeles on Monday morning (December 30).

Google honors Filipino author Genoveva Matute MANILA- Google honored Filipino author and educator Genoveva Matute on Friday with a doodle in celebration of her 105th birthday.

Matute is known for "Kuwento ni Mabuti," the first short story in Filipino to win the Palanca Award when the literary awards were first held in 1951.

A graduate of the then Philippine Normal College and the University of Santo Tomas, Matute taught students for 46 years and even became dean of the Filipino Department of PNC. In 1992, Matute also won the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining.

“Their alternative demand to provide the lady senator a fair, speedy and credible trial is totally misplaced because precisely, that is being given her by the hearing court as required by the Constitution,” he added.

Parties who feel that constitutional guarantees are not being observed should avail themselves of appropriate remedial measures under Philippine law instead of resorting to “unfair publicity stunts,” according to Panelo.

“This matter is a case between Sen. De Lima and the people of the Philippines.

Our criminal statutes are believed to be violated by her,” the Palace spokesman said.

“Any undue persuasion that tramples upon our judicial processes or puts any form of tension on the officers of our courts relative thereto must be condemned accordingly by all citizens of this state,” he added.

‘Fight back, fight more’ MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos living or traveling in the United States are not covered by the administration’s plan to impose a visa requirement on Americans, Malacañang has clarified.

President Duterte has threatened to require Americans to secure a visa before entering the Philippines as a response to a 2020 US budget amendment that bars individuals behind the detention of opposition Sen. Leila de Lima from entering the US. The administration has also banned US Sens. Richard Durbin of Illinois and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, authors of the amendment, and Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts, supporter of the provision, from entering the Philippines.

Last Tuesday, Durbin called the planned travel restriction an “insult” to the Filipino-American community and the country’s democracy. He also warned that the policy would be disadvantageous to Filipino-Americans and other people who travel between the two countries.

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo described Durbin’s warning as “misplaced.”

“As regards Sen. Durbin’s remark that this administration should stop threatening the travel of Filipino-Americans from the US to the Philippine territory, the same is likewise misplaced,” Panelo said in a statement issued last Monday.

“Filipinos residing or sojourning in America, or our balikbayans, are not covered by our ultimatum should the US government pursue banning the entry of Filipino officials acting in accordance with the Philippine law apropos Sen. De Lima’s case,” he added.

Panelo, nevertheless, said imposing visa requirements on foreign nationals is “an exercise of a sovereign right and is not an insult to any particular community.”

“In fact, they have been requiring Filipinos to secure a US visa before we can travel into their homeland. As the

community of nations believes in, ‘diplomacy is equality,’” he added.

‘Unfair publicity stunts’

The entry ban against officials and private individuals responsible for De Lima’s arrest and detention in 2017 was included in the 2020 budget signed into law by US President Donald Trump late last month.

A “Prohibition on Entry” provision authorizes the secretary of state to apply sub-section (c) to foreign government officials about whom the secretary has “credible information” have been involved in the “wrongful” imprisonment of De Lima. The sub-section refers to the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, which allows the US government to slap sanctions on individuals linked to human rights violations, including banning them from the US. Malacañang has claimed that the entry ban could not be enforced unless there is “credible information” that would prove that De Lima is detained wrongfully.

Officials have also maintained that De Lima, in jail on charges of accepting bribes from convicted drug lords, is being accorded due process.

Panelo also denied that the rights of De Lima – a vocal critic of Duterte – are being violated.

“Allegations of violation of human rights on Sen. De Lima’s case are coming from either absolute ignorance or shameful bias. It is high time for these US senators to consult their US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim who is knowledgeable on our local processes before they start blabbering further nonsense,” the Palace spokesman said.

Panelo also assailed Leahy and other foreign officials urging the administration to release De Lima.

“The call of these foreign officials to release Sen. Leila de Lima, who is presently facing charges before an independent Philippine court, is a brazen interference into our sovereignty,” Panelo said.

As the nation welcomed the New Year,

De Lima said people should see 2020 as a time “to fight back” and “fight more” against abusive leaders and not be cowed by threats and oppression.

In her message in celebration of the New Year, De Lima rallied the Filipino public to strengthen their call for a more just and humane society and show the world the power of people’s solidarity toward upholding social justice and democracy.

“Each New Year is a time of new hope – hope that the year will be better for one’s self, for one’s family and for the whole country,” De Lima said in Filipino.

“My wish and prayer: that each of us be stronger in facing new challenges this year, strengthen our faith and amplify the call for a just society that respects the rights of each Filipino, whatever one’s gender, age and belief is,” she added.

De Lima welcomed 2020 inside her detention quarters at Camp Crame, Quezon City. She was joined by her family, relatives, friends and staff members.

Five Benefits of establishing a Revocable Living Trust

THERE is never the perfect time to think about who you would like to inherit from your estate in case you pass away or at least who among your closest friends (BFFs) and family members are even deserving of inheriting from your estate. In doing so, you should also think about which vehicle you plan to use in implementing your estate plan. One of the best vehicle in implementing your estate plan is a revocable living trust. Five major benefits of establishing a revocable living trust are: 1. Your estate can avoid the time, cost, and hassle of going through the probate court process.

If you pass away without a will (intestate) in California, one of your close family would have to file a petition in probate court to probate your estate.

Your estate will be divided and distributed according to the California probate code rules of intestate succession. Even if you have a will when you pass away, your family would still need to file a petition in probate court if your estate is worth over $150,000 and go through the probate process. This can become a circus if certain beneficiaries contest the validity of the Will or the distribution of the estate. Your estate will pay for attorney’s fees, probate referee fees, appraisers and other experts, CPA fees, etc. If people contest the case, your estate would end up paying legal fees to defend the estate in litigation.

The entire process can take anywhere from 9 months to years depending on the contentiousness of the probate case.

With a revocable living trust, your trustee or successor trustee if you were the initial trustee, would administer the trust and distribute the estate according to the trust document without having to open a probate court case.

If the trust is funded with all your assets, it is possible to administer and distribute the trust assets without any Court involvement at all. This process is a lot faster than going through probate.

2. Your estate is not public record When you file a probate case, the public has access to your probate case file. The public will know the assets of the estate including the values of those assets. If the Will is admitted into probate, the terms of the Will is open to public scrutiny.

Establishing a revocable living trust makes your estate affairs private.

Strangers do not have access to the terms of your living trust. Only certain beneficiaries and possible heirs can request a copy of the revocable living trust after you pass away.

3. You can dictate who will inherit from your estate.

If you pass away without a Will, your estate will be divided and distributed in Probate Court following the rules of intestate succession in the California probate code. Certain relatives will be entitled to a share of your estate even if you feel they are not deserving. By establishing a revocable living trust, you

can designate who you want to inherit from your estate. You can designate what and how much each one will received from your estate after you pass away. The assets distributed to each beneficiaries does not have to be equal.

The people you designate as beneficiaries of your living trust does not even have to be close family members. You can designate anyone as a beneficiary, with certain exceptions, of your estate.

4. You can structure your estate to minimize estate taxes If your estate is valued above the estate tax exemption, establishing a trust can allow you to divide up your estate into smaller sub trusts to minimize the overall estate tax effect on your estate. It allows you to set up a vehicle for certain charitable giving which carries tax advantage and asset protection.

5. You can choose who will administer your estate after your death When you establish a revocable trust, you can appoint someone else as trustee or you can appoint a successor trustee if you are the initial trustee.

The trustee will be administering (managing) the trust after you pass away without a need to open a probate court case. This allows for continuity in operating the trust and the efficient and cost effective distribution of estate assets. If you are concerned about whether you can trust any family members as your trustee, you can appoint an institution as a professional trustee to carry out the terms of the declaration of trust. These type of trustee services are often offered by banks, financial institutions, wealth management firms, and business management firms for a reasonable fee. This minimizes conflicts within the family and prevents negligence and wrong doing by inexperienced family members.

MindinG Your FinAnCes… FroM PAGe 6 of time to deal with the lawsuit. In California, however, that date is the date set for a case management conference provided that you respond to the lawsuit. So if you do not respond, that court date means nothing.

The question is: How much time do you have to file a response? Answer: 30 days from the time that you are served the summons. That’s right- only 30 days. If you don’t respond within 30 days, the creditor can move for a default judgment against you.

That means you will lose- and you will owe the money that you are being sued for.

Once the creditor obtains a judgment against you, you are now fair game to the judgment creditor. What does that mean?

Well, now that they have a judgment against you, they can now use all collection tactics at their disposal to get your money.

If you are working, the judgment creditor can garnish your wages (up to 25% of your net income every paycheck until paid in full).

They can levy your bank account and wipe you out up to the judgment amount. If you have a home, the creditor can put a lien on your house. Additionally, the judgment earns the legal rate of 10% every year. In California, a judgment is good for 10 years and then it can be renewed for another 10 years after that. That means that the creditor can have up to 20 years to collect from you!

I have people consulting with me all the time who have old judgments from 10 years ago. The debt amount started small. But after adding legal fees, collections costs and the 10% interest accrued over the years, the debt amount has more than doubled. This is what happens when you ignore a judgment just because you think that the creditor has nothing to get from you at the moment. That may be true if you are currently unemployed and have no assets. But things change all the time. When your financial circumstances change for the better and you least expect it, that old judgment will usually come out of nowhere and will catch you by surprise.

I see it happen all the time.

If a judgment lien has been placed on your home, you will not be able to sell your home without paying the judgment amount in full, plus all that interest that has been added.

Just the other day, I got a call from someone who is trying to close escrow for a refinance but could not do so because a title search showed that there was an outstanding judgment for $18,000. This person has forgotten about it. He said that more than 8 years ago, he was sued after his car got repossessed. But he ignored the lawsuit and the judgment.

Now, it has come back to haunt him. He needs the money badly from the refinance to take care of other financial needs but this judgment is stopping him from being able to complete the transaction.

If you’ve been sued by a creditor, it doesn’t make sense to ignore the lawsuit hoping it will just go away because it won’t. If you owe the debt and have no defense to the lawsuit, filing a response may also be pointless and can just be a huge waste of time and money on lawyer’s fees.

In some cases, it may be possible to negotiate a settlement with the creditor’s attorney.

Payment can be made in a lump sum but usually for a reduced amount, or, if you don’t have the cash to do that, perhaps an installment agreement. If neither one is possible, perhaps it’s time to consider filing bankruptcy. If you’ve been sued, you have very little time to act and the sooner you do something about it, the better off you will be.

2020 Housing Predictions

US housing market predictions 2020 point towards a slowdown, the same is also starting to appear in the state’s housing market.

Experts predict that several economic factors might cool California’s booming real estate market even further going into 2020. The California housing market kicked off 2019 with a weak start, but it’s been improving throughout the year according to the California Association of Realtors (C.A.R). And with mortgage interest rates trending downward, the California housing market predictions for the rest of 2019 are brighter than what most had initially anticipated. Here are several analyst based suggestions that will help you find the answers to where the California housing market is heading next year and if investing in California real estate 2020 is a smart move. Let’s get started.

1- California Home Prices Will Drop It’s well-known that house prices in the California real estate market have been following an upward trajectory since 2012. According to the California Association of Realtor’s chief economist and senior VP, Leslie Appleton-Young, the continuous shortage of homes for sale in California is what caused the rise in house prices over the last few years.

However, in the latest housing market forecast from C.A.R, Appleton-Young states that this trend has finally begun to take a toll on the California real estate market and price growth has been slow to modest in 2019. The chart below shows Zillow’s home value index for California and their house price forecast for 2020: Prices are likely to fall due to the continuous decline in home sales in many parts of the state.

In his California housing market forecast, Nickelsburg notes that despite sliding home prices, the affordability issue is still driving people out of the real estate market. C.A.R also reported that so far in 2019, only 32% of Californians were able to afford to buy a median-priced house. 1. Feelings of Obligations to Caregiving Recipients By nature, caregivers are typically caring people. Many private employers take advantage of a caregivers compassionate nature and do not pay a fair wage. Many caregivers feel uncomfortable going after those they provided care for and their family members. Many feel a sense of loyalty or obligation towards their employers.

While this is noble sentiment, it does not change the fact that caregivers who have been paid less than the legally required wages are victims. In fact, many people who utilize in home caregivers are financially able to pay for caregiving services as required by law, but simply chose not to because they want to save money. We often see the children of elderly patients making efforts to preserve their own inheritance by taking advantage of caregivers.

2. I Do Not Have A Social Security Number.

You do not need a social security number to recover overtime wages from your employer. If you win a settlement, we can help you get an ITIN that can be used to pay the taxes you owe.

3. I Am Concerned About Immigration Status.

5. I Signed a Document Stating I am an Independent Contractor.

It is unlikely that an in-home caregiver is an independent contractor under the law even if you have signed a document saying so. Still, it is popular for private employers to try to convince you that you are an independent contractor and pay you as one because it is much less costly and much more advantageous for them. The reality is that many private employers misclassify caregivers as independent contractors to avoid paying overtime.

In many cases, a document stating a caregiver is an “independent contractor” will have little impact on the caregiver’s ability to recoup unpaid overtime. Often, the employers retain so much control of a caregivers duties the true facts of the employment will overcome any purported agreement.

6. I Did Not Pay Taxes on The Wages I Did Receive.

While we recommend that our clients pay all taxes owed for the wages received, if you have not paid taxes on your wages, you still have the right to seek the overtime wages you are due. It is the employer’s obligation to properly classify you as an employee and withhold state and federal income taxes from your paychecks. If this has not happened, it is also problematic for your employer who has violated the law. The most important thing to understand is that it does not impact your ability to recover unpaid overtime.

7. I Do Not Want to Get Involved in a Long Court Battle, and I May Leave the Country.

Most cases settle without going to court, and many cases settle within a matter of a few months to a year. We regularly have clients who return to their home countries while the case is ongoing. 4- California Home Sales Will Drop As Appleton-Young explains in her California housing market predictions report, house prices are likely to drop due to declining home sales in the state. In fact, while the level of inventory and listings is currently growing, home sales have already faltered. But why are homes sales declining despite the lower prices? As you can expect, it all goes back to the continuous affordability issue in the California real estate market. Based on Zillow’s chart above, the median price for a California home for sale is now in the $500k range. In major metros, it’s much, much higher and the average home buyer simply can’t afford to buy.

As a result, many would-be buyers are priced out of the California housing market or fed up after years of price growth. But as prices have stabled and are predicted to drop, potential buyers are choosing to wait on the sidelines.

5- California Rental Rates Will Rise Unlike many real estate markets

in the US, it seems that Californians have answered the question “buy vs rent?” – renting is the winning answer. This doesn’t come as a surprise given the ultra-high house prices.

First-time buyers simply can’t come up with the down payment or manage the hefty mortgage payments and, hence they choose to keep renting. However, despite the fact that mortgage interest rates are lower and home prices are beginning to fall, California housing market predictions 2020 from Zillow suggest that rent prices will rise. Lorenzana: Killing of Iranian general has no immediate impact on PHL

DEFENSE Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Friday said the killing of top Iranian commander Quasem Soleimani at the Baghdad international airport has no immediate impact on the Philippines.

MANILA — Exiled Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Maria Sison is open to a one-on-one meeting with President Duterte, but not in the Philippines, as the President wanted.

Sison said in a radio interview on dzRH that he has no problem talking with the President, but he was uncomfortable and distrusts “peace spoilers.”

Duterte earlier said he is willing to resume the long-stalled peace negotiation with the CPP-National Democratic Front (NDF) and tasked Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to work on bringing the government and the CPP-NDF back to the negotiating table.

Sison pointed out he doesn’t trust individuals or groups who move to destroy the peace process and that he would only talk to the President alone, without distracting entities.

The communist leader added that he was amenable to talks if done outside the Philippines.

Sison, in self exile in the Netherlands since 1987, had rejected proposals to hold the peace talks in the Philippines, saying it would place negotiations under the control of the government.

Duterte, on the other hand, insisted that his talk with Sison would only take place in the country.

Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo reiterated the call for Sison to return to Manila to show sincerity about the peace negotiations, guaranteeing

that he would not be arrested by authorities.

“We dare Mr. Sison to come to the Philippines for a one-on-one meeting with the President to forge a lasting peace agreement,” Panelo said. “(Duterte) guarantees that he will not be arrested upon his arrival and after the meeting he can freely leave for Netherlands when he so desires,” he added.

Panelo made the statement after Bello had issued the orders for the Suspension of Offensive Military Operations and Suspension of Offensive Police Operations.

Communist rebels, meanwhile, must prove their sincerity in pushing for peace by ending attacks on civilians and government forces especially with the ceasefire in place, Sen. Christopher Go said.

In a report by ABS-CBN, Sison said

that there was no problem continuing the holiday ceasefire with government forces as the administration has reciprocated the rebel ceasefire declaration.

Malacañang earlier dared Sison to cancel the ceasefire, saying the communists violated their own declared unilateral ceasefire. On Monday, separate attacks were staged by the New People’s Army in Camarines Sur and Iloilo, leaving one soldier dead and eight other security forces wounded.

The government peace panel and the NDF earlier agreed to a nationwide unilateral and reciprocal ceasefire from December 23 to January 7 following a statement from Duterte for a possible reopening of peace negotiations.

Juanito Magbanua, spokesman for the Apolinario Gatmaitan Command, said they are now on “defensive mode,” stressing that they will strictly follow the 15-day holiday truce, as ordered by

the CPP Central Committee.

But he said they would conduct active operations to defend themselves, in case of an attack by unfriendly forces.

Capt. Cenon Pancito III, spokesman for the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, yesterday stressed it was the NPA that violated the ceasefire, citing an ambush in Iloilo where communist rebels used an improvised explosive device – a clear violation of provisions of international human rights.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government, the PNP and the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), meanwhile, appealed to the media to spread the government’s actions against communist rebellion as they admitted that they have been losing the propaganda war “to more intelligent, wiser New People’s Army rebels’ propagandists.”

She is survived by her children Peter, Bambina, Michael and Pixie, her children-in-law Tweety Quintero, Xandra Barretto and Jay Fonacier, and her grandchildren Carlo, Iñigo, Isabella and Enrique Olivares, Samantha and Jessica Wise, Julio Olivares and Noelle Fonacier," the family said in an official statement sent to Philstar.com by The Daily Tribune.

The wake will begin on Saturday, January 4, at the Capilla de la Virgen of Santuario de San Antonio along McKinley Road, Forbes Park, from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Mass will be held by 5 p.m. The funeral mass will take place on Monday, January 6 at Santuario de San Antonio around 9:30 a.m.

Cacho-Olivares started The Daily Tribune in 1999 before selling the publication to the Concept and Information Group in

June 2018.

Despite tons of libel cases hurled against her in her decades-old career, Olivares continued to write on her column “Frontline” after selling the company. Her last column, "'Nuff said," was published on Jan. 3, 2020.

Olivares was known for her hard-hitting commentaries against government officials. She was a staunch critic of the Liberal Party, former President Benigno Aquino III and former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

In February 2006, The Daily Tribune office was raided by the police at the height of the State of Emergency imposed by then President Arroyo. Despite the raid and harassment, the paper continued to publish critical stories under Olivares' leadership.

Remembering our dear friend and LA community leader, Dr. Herminia "Baby" Perlas-Gomez

he Filipino community here in Los Angeles prayed for Dr. Herminia "Baby" Perlas-Gomez during the Burial Mass held on Monday, December 30, 2019 at the Holy Cross Cemetery, Chapel of the Risen Christ.

Though Baby tenaciously pursued her medical career, she also pursued her passion for music and culture,

To most of us, Baby as we fondly called her, along with her then husband, Frank, and three children (Rachel, Robert and Ron) were once popularly known as the "Gomez Family Singers," during the mid-80's.

As a brief background on Baby, she was born and raised in the town of Santa Rosa in the province of Laguna on September 5, 1938 to Pilar Malana and Nonito Perlas and she has one surviving sister, Nonette Perlas.

She attended the medical school program at the University of Santo Tomas and married Francisco Gomez.

They had five children, two of whom died prematurely, shortly after their birth.

Subsequently, both Frank and Baby brought their family to the United States in the early 80's. Through the years, even after Frank passed away, Baby stayed close to her family and numerous friends in the Los Angeles area, though she has eventually moved to Las Vegas sometime back.

She treasured her three children (Rachel, Robert and Ron, as well as her five grandchildren - Leah, Dana,

Maruca, Jason and Sean, all of whom were with her in her final days. Baby felt blessed surrounded by her loved ones, when she passed away peacefully in Las Vegas on December 3, 2019, after her long battle with Cancer.

To Rachel, Robert and Ron whom we have all knew during their childhood entertainment days, we're all grateful to your Mom, Baby and your Dad Frank, for sharing your music with all of us. Surely, we thank your Mom, who was a pillar of kindness in medically helping our kababayans here in the Los Angeles area, and she will never be forgotten. May she REST IN ETERNAL PEACE. God Bless!

espite the protestations of JaDineans who seem to be in denial about their idols James Reid and Nadine Lustre’s reported breakup, the sad reality is that Jojo Gabinete’s scoop in pep.ph is true, and not fake news.

It was confirmed that Nadine packed up and left the Loyola Grand Villas (Quezon City) home of James that has served as their love nest for more than two years, and moved to a rented unit in a posh Makati condo. But even if they are now living apart, the un-couple is said to still see each other.

During their rEVOLution concert in 2016 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, James officially

announced that he and Nadine were going steady, punctuated with a kiss and a reverberating “I love you.” In 2017, they began living together, prompting Nadine to hush up critics (who claimed that JaDine was setting a “bad” example for their fans) by saying, “Come on, guys, it’s 2017!”

It was towards the end of 2019 that cracks in the relationship were reported. After James left Viva, the studio that built him up, he embarked on a solo flight, set to firm up his career as a singer under his own recording company called Careless Music Manila.

ABS-CBN announced a project that would star James with KPop star Nancy Jewel DcDonie (of Momoland). Nadine frowned on James being paired with another actress.

According to a STAR source, James is handling the breakup with care to cushion the impact on Nadine who has admitted grappling with mental illness (he has a brother who committed suicide).

Jojo mentioned “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the breakup. Was it a case of “too much, too soon”…too much togetherness and too soon to be living together?

A week ago, Nadine posted on her Instagram a picture of a bikini-clad girl standing in the veranda, captioned, “I can’t be who you want,” followed a few days later by a photo of four people in the sea, captioned “No questions, just go with it,” and still another (black and white) photo of hers surveying a city by night from her condo unit or hotel room, captioned “for good reason, lost all of my love.”

‘No script, no fuss, no pretense’: Kathryn Bernardo launches own YouTube channel

MANILA — Box-office superstar Kathryn Bernardo is the latest A-list celebrity to launch her own YouTube channel, promising a look at her personal life with “no script, no fuss, no pretense.”

Bernardo, 23, had been teasing in the past week, through Instagram photos, a “new beginning.”

On Friday, she finally unveiled the project to be her eponymous page on the leading video-sharing platform.

In her first-ever video, titled “Everyday Kath,” Bernardo is seen in a dreamy setting apparently inspired by fairy tales, with “So This Is Love” from Disney’s animated classic “Cinderella” as background music.

“She’s dressed like a princess but she walks around barefoot.

She’s all dolled up but she’s not afraid to bask in the sun. She looks familiar so you believe you know her… but perhaps you don’t know her as well as you think you do; in fact, perhaps you don’t know her at all,” its description goes.

Aga Muhlach on Best Actor snub in MMF MANILA — As Christmas crowds trooped to cinemas for the 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival, “Miracle in Cell No. 7” star Aga Muhlach emerged as a fan favorite to clinch the Best Actor trophy.

However, Muhlach’s portrayal of a mentally challenged man who ends up in jail after being wrongly accused of a crime was snubbed for the top acting prize.

That award went to Allen Dizon for “Mindanao,” which was the big winner of the festival with 11 trophies, including Best Actress for Judy Ann Santos, Best Director for Brillante Mendoza, and Best Picture.

Despite “Miracle in Cell No. 7” not receiving a single award, Muhlach appeared in high spirits, and in fact “overwhelmed,” on Thursday during a thanksgiving dinner for the film’s box office success.

Speaking with ABS-CBN News’ Mario Dumaual, Muhlach only laughed when asked for his reaction to the movie reportedly leading ticket sales. Under MMFF rules, participating producers are not allowed to disclose box office tallies.

Muhlach said he is also grateful to those who have been praising his performance in “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” in light of online reactions in the wake of his Best Actor snub.

A mong sentimenta l ones is 33-year-old actress Angelica Panganiban who described not only the last 12 months, but the entire decade as one “roller coaster ride.” She looked back on the time she met her biological relatives to losing loved ones, whether family or boyfriend.

According to Angelica, the years taught her to forgive those who hurt her, and love herself more and those she took for granted.

of courage, strength and most of all bravery” for her.

“Life has proven, yet again, that the sun always rises. Feeling really optimistic about 2020… Love and light,” her message read.

Singer Morissette Amon, also a bit controversial in the latter part of last year, had this to say.

“Oh what a crazy year you’ve been, 2019…” she started. “Though despite all the setbacks and challenges, you still have been a good one.”

Morissette wrote she learned to be stronger and to rise again like a phoenix. The singer thinks there are more reasons to smile and make the most of her “beautiful fierce life.”

“Looking into 2020, like the beginning of every year, is like being on a blank canvass of endless possibilities.. but somehow I’ve never been this excited! 2019: Year of robust infra development MANILA — Things seem to be looking up for the Department of Transportation (DOTr) as it continues to push the infrastructure agenda of the Duterte administration this year and several more in the pipeline.

AIRPORTS

According to a yearend report by the DOTr, the number of completed airport projects alone, from 2016 to 2019, has reached a total of 119 projects -- with 70 projects under the DOTr and 49 under the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

This does not include the 166 ongoing airport projects, with 138 projects directly under the DOTr and 28 under the CAAP. Some of the completed projects this year include the Marinduque Airport, inaugurated on April 11, 2019, which resumed commercial operations in the same month nearly six years after its last commercial operations in 2013.

The Sangley Airport, seen as one of the solutions to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), had its operational dry run on October 29 with general aviation and turboprop cargo operations beginning November.

The Camiguin Airport has been completed and ready for inauguration, with its expanded passenger terminal building, administration building, and a fire station building.

Railways (PNR) Clark Phase 1 (Tutuban to Malolos) which began its actual construction on February 15.

The rehabilitation of the MRT-3 is also ongoing which includes the overhaul of the rail line’s 72 light rail vehicles, replacement of mainline tracks, rehabilitation of power and overhead catenary systems, and other improvements to help the MRT-3 cope with the demand for efficient public transportation in Metro Manila.

Rail projects still in the pipeline include the PNR Clark Phase 2, PNR Calamba, PNR Bicol (Subic to Clark), Mindanao Railway, LRT-2 West Extension, LRT-4, and the Cebu Monorail.

For ongoing airport projects, the highlights include the Bulacan International Airport which had its notice of award issued to the San Miguel Holdings Corporation on August 14 and concession agreement signed on September 18.

The Clark International Airport is 87.61 percent complete as of October 2019, with a new runway to be completed in July 2020 and its operations and maintenance turned over to LIPAD Corporation on August 16.

Following efforts to increase the operational efficiency of airports and reduce day-time flight congestion, 23 out of 42 commercial airports have been night-rated, with another 15 targeted for night-rating in 2022.

RAILWAYS

The DOTr has also continued the construction of several railway infrastructure projects this year with even more to come.

A total of six railway projects are under construction including the Metro Manila Subway -clearing phase of the construction began on December 21; the long-delayed Common Station which will connect the MRT-3, MRT-7, LRT-1 and the Metro Manila Subway; MRT-7 which is 49.95 percent complete as of November; the LRT-1 Cavite Extension, 30.74 percent complete as of October; the LRT-2 East Extension, 71.19 percent complete as of October 2019; and the Philippine National

ROAD TRANSPORT

For road transpor t, the country’s first landport, the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange continues to serve the public, with two other landports in the pipeline.

These landports include the Taguig City Integrated Terminal Exchange and the North Integrated Terminal Exchange.

MARITIME

The DOTr, with the help of its attached agency the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), has completed a total of 325 port pro-

jects from 2016 to 2019 -- 181 commercial port projects under the PPA and 144 social and tourism port projects under the DOTr. Aside from the completed projects, another 246 port projects are ongoing -- 58 under the PPA and 188 from the DOTr. Some of the completed port projects include the completion of the country’s largest port terminal building at the Cagayan de Oro (CDO) Port which can hold 3,000 passengers daily -- triple its previous capacity -- and the port’s new electronic gate complex with weighbridge inaugurated on July 15.

The Cavite-Manila ferry service was also launched in November, with the MB Seaborne offering free rides until January 9, 2020 and the MV Island Sabtang until January 31, 2020.

The Opol Port, designed as a

back-up port to help decongest the CDO port and caters mainly to cargo vessels, was inaugurated on July 15.

The Batangas Container Terminal Expansion Project, completed on April 29, is seen to improve the efficiency of the Port of Batangas by increasing the handling capacity of the port from 300,000 TEUs to 400,000 TEUs annually.

Ongoing projects include the Isabela Port in Basilan, 30.99 percent complete as of October; the Cebu International Container Port, which, once completed, would handle all foreign containerized cargo completing the Cebu Baseport; the PAGASA Seaport Project Phase 1, 75 percent complete as of October 2019; the modernization of light station -- with 551 of 600 lighthouses operational as of November, among many others. The country’s go-to place for bargain shopping underwent a little upgrade last year with Mayor Isko Moreno’s cleanup efforts, but if you want to see the real face of urban hustle, Divisoria remains as honest as it gets.

GROWING up, we had two rules about shopping: We can’t buy any kind of clothing my mother can make herself and we can’t buy from a mall anything we can get from Divisoria. The first rule limited us to mere undergarments and cotton tees while the second one limited us to, well, almost nothing. Because what do you really need in life that you couldn’t get from Divisoria?

All sorts of ready-to-wear apparel from baby onesies to school uniforms and all versions of the latest street fashion? Those line the sidewalks of C.M. Recto, from Tutuban all the way to Santo Cristo. Umbrellas, boots and raincoats for the rainy season? Head to Soler. The native crafts for decors and souvenirs are in Tabora, and at Yangco Market, you can find costumes for your kids, a prom gown, a ready-made barong, a dress for your own wedding.

Down the next block you’ll find Carmen Planas, fabric hub by day and go-to for fruits and vegetables after dusk. Here, piles of fabrics for anything from daster to ball gowns, kukurs (kukurtinahin to those who didn’t grow up with gay lingo from the 80s) to French lace, await. Inside the buildings, tela is mostly sold per yard, while outside, overruns are sold per kilo. Did you know that the hautest of haute couturiers shop in Divisoria, too? Because, well, why not?

The face of Manila hustle: the real Divisoria is in its alleyways.

But back to my mother’s rules. The reason behind them is basically that she was a kusturera and her source of living frequently brought her to Divisoria.

My brother and I often tagged along with her to Divisoria, sometimes out of necessity, like when we needed to buy school supplies—but more often because we simply wanted to. You could call it our version of bring-yourkids-to-work day.

Going to Divisoria meant getting a new toy and getting to eat our favorite palabok from the Aklanon ladies at Divisoria Wet Market. The palabok with the thick orange sauce, squid ink and sprinkled with bits of deep-fried beef fat both crunchy and tasty. The palengke setting wasn’t the most palatable ambiance but we always wiped our plastic plates clean.

By shopping day’s end, we would be tired and sweaty from walking in and out of the pasilyos my mother would drag us to. The toy and palabok treat would provide just the right dose of energy we needed to face the final challenge of every Divisoria trip: finding a ride home. Carrying our many loaded plastic bags, our fam of three — my mother, brother and I— would run after moving jeepneys, chasing them along with a throng of people equally desperate to get out of Divisoria (and get their asses home to catch the evening’s Flor de Luna).

We’d walk up still running jeeps, wiggle our way in to see if there were any more seats available. We only needed a space for one anyway. Like Blanche Dubois, my mother always depended on the kindness of strangers—strangers who would agree to have one of her kids sit on their lap, while I or my brother sit on my mom’s.

After a few days, as long as school’s out, we’re back in the chaos. We’d watch our mother haggle until she got her fair discount. We’d watch our belongings too with hawk-eyed seriousness. You are never more alive than when you’re in Divisoria. Your eyes never busier: watching out for hands that lurk near your mother’s shoulder bag, for quick fingers that knowingly miscount your change, for suspicious weighing scales. Your sense of pakiramdam is also heightened— for knives aiming to slash your bags or hands slipping into your pocket. Pro tips: Bags should always be on your front, securely guarded with your arm. Jewelry is not advised. Money should be kept where it won’t be easily stolen, like the bed of your shoes.

We didn’t think of it as education then but we could hold our own in Manila’s streets now because we were Divi-raised.

What else did we learn?

We learned that the worst times to visit are Saturdays, holidays, -ber month weekends, and everyday after 5pm. The best time is at 9am, just when the shops open, until lunch time.

We learned the difference between cotton and polyester, between good silk and Gina silk. We learned the terms hemline and rick-rack and pelon and electric pleats. We learned that strange brands from China like Plum Blossom (bath soap) and Maxam (toothpaste) basically achieve the same things as the ones we grew up with (although we will never smell as mabango using Plum Blossom than when we use Dial or Irish Spring).

We learned that if you’re maabilidad, you’ll never grow hungry. And Divisoria, with its wealth of stuff, offers endless opportunities to make money and bring food to the table. You can get Made in China makeup that you can sell at the office, daster and underwear you can sell to the neighbors, stationeries to peddle to your classmates. In Juan Luna Street, you can get shirts at wholesale prices for a minimum order of six pieces. It’s also the place to get towels and handkerchiefs by the dozen, which you can have embroidered, um, wherelse? In Divisoria! In Sto. Cristo, you can get coffee, sugar and cocoa; fish balls, squid balls and chicken balls; as well as chichirias and nuts per kilo.

Even Divi’s history is a lesson on never giving up easily: during the Spanish times, because the non-Christian Chinese traders were barred from taking up residence and conducting business inside the Walled City of Intramuros, these Chinese merchants started setting up their shops around Binondo, eventually giving birth to the most famous budget shopping complex in the country.

Looking back, maybe I also acquired a sense of entrepreneurship from all those years tagging along with my mother to Divisoria: apart from the textiles, she would buy makeup and a variety of grocery items for reselling, or raw peanuts for cooking and repacking—which might explain my own adventures into retail when I got a little older.

Eventually, my mother was able to grow her modest sources of income into a full-blown business, and she has continued on with her frequent trips to Divi up to present. As for me, while the malls have kept me from being a regular for years, I have returned to the Divi fold having decided to fully take on the entrepreneurial path and help in my mother’s business.

It’s a new day for the country’s bargain capital.

Having also become a parent, I now find myself never missing out on an opportunity to take my little boy to Divisoria whenever he’s game to tag along. He doesn't like that it's crowded and far. But he gets into the swing of things when he sees something he likes—a selfie stick, a tripod, a Minecraft toy— which I don’t mind buying because they’re far cheaper here than anywhere else.

It’s not exactly the same Divisoria my brother and I frequented growing up, especially with Mayor Isko’s cleanup drive a few months back—but while there’s now a semblance of order, and patches of open space, the rush is still there, the chaos, the hundreds of people so determined to make a living on every inch of selling space they’re allowed to. The sweat and the grime, the smiles and exhaustion on vendors’ faces, the Good Morning towels on shoulders, the bedraggled alpombra slippers.

You can’t get a more honest image of Manila hustle than in this exuberant, borderless sprawl of low-price trading. It is where my mother taught us, maybe directly or indirectly, the value of every centavo saved, every centavo earned, and every centavo spent. Who knows, while looking for another toy or his nth selfie stick, my little boy might even pick up his own life lesson or two. After all, didn’t they say you can find everything here? Organizing Your Pantry

I

f you reach into the pantry daily, you know how important it is to be organized when cooking. If you don’t organize your pantry, things can go bad, be unused for months or even years, and simply be hard to reach. If you group your items and follow a few simple inventory tricks, you can get organized and stay organized.

Clear Out Your Pantry

1. Remove everything from your pantry. Place everything on the kitchen table.

Toss out anything outdated or bottles that have less than a teaspoon on the bottom. If you have duplicates of an item that you rarely use, set these aside. You may want to reconsider buying that item in the future.

Check expiration dates. If something is very old, but not outdated, consider donating it. If it has lasted years, you probably aren’t going to use it.

2. Clean out your pantry. Dust your pantry and remove any sticky messes. If you clean your pantry, there will be more of an incentive to keep it clean. Sweep and clean the floor as well.

Use butcher paper to line the shelves, so that your pantry will be easier to clean in the future. Some people like to use wrapping paper for a more cheerful look.

Wire shelves in particular can be drab and may need some dressing up.

3. Fit baskets or containers into your pantry. If your pantry is disorganized, then it is likely that you need separate containers to split it into sections. Find baskets with low or transparent walls, so that you can see what is in them without pulling them out.

Some people suggest using spice racks or lazy susans for easy access to items.

Some things, like flour or nuts, that you may accumulate a lot of, can be put into large jars and labelled with a tag

2. Organize what is left on the table.

Gather like items together into groups that you will keep them in once you transfer them all to your shelves. Some people prefer to organize their pantry by meals-- breakfast foods, lunch foods, snacks, and beverages.

Some prefer to organize by type. Common groupings are as follows: flour and sugar, canned and jarred goods, grains and beans, boxed items, spices, canned/bottled beverages, potatoes and onions, and paper goods.

3. Put the groupings into wire, cloth, or woven baskets.

You can usually find cloth baskets at a home goods store.

Also be sure to check Goodwill or another thrift store.

Don’t be afraid to pack the basket a little bit tight-- you will be removing it from the pantry to grab your items.

5. Put the items back in your pantry.

You can also buy a chalkboard at a thrift store, or chalkboard paint at a home improvement store. When you are running low on an item, you can write it on the chalkboard.

2. Use fun containers to keep your pantry beautiful and interesting. You will have more of an incentive to keep your pantry organized if you like the containers that things are kept in. Buy a couple of fun containers whenever you see them out shopping, and add beauty to your pantry.

You can usually find vintage or antique containers at secondhand stores or junk shops.

Brightly colored containers can usually be found at a home goods store or big box store.

3. Use levels of storage so that you can see the back row of items. If you have a particularly deep pantry, you may want to elevate items that are in the back by putting them on low shelves. This way you can see their labels, and you will not buy duplicates when you visit the store.

Big box stores sell low wire racks for this purpose, but you can also get creative. Old cigar boxes can be about the right height. If you have many duplicate items, sometimes you can stack them two high. (wikihow.com)

How Often Should You Feed Your Dog?

ost experts recommend feeding your dog twice a day — once in the morning and once in the evening — though puppies under five months of age should be fed three to four times a day, or as directed by your veterinarian.

While most dogs will dig in the moment you place the bowl on the floor, you may find that your adopted dog is a finicky eater, at least at first. After all, he’s been thrust into a new home with new people, and he may be too nervous to eat. If this is the case, you will need to teach him to eat on a schedule.

Leave the bowl on the floor for ten minutes and then pick it up, regardless of whether he has eaten. (If your dog is a slow eater, this period can be extended to twenty minutes, but only if he is still eating during that time and hasn’t gone off in search of other entertainment.)

At the next scheduled feeding time, put the bowl back down, again for only ten minutes. Pretty soon your dog will learn that he needs to eat when the food is offered.

Having regularly-scheduled feeding times not only establishes a routine, it also allows you to monitor your dog’s health. If he picks at his food throughout the day, you may not notice right away if he’s not eating well. But if he normally eats heartily as soon

as you put the bowl down, you will immediately see a sudden lack of appetite, which is often an indication that he’s not feeling well. If your dog’s appetite doesn’t improve in a few days, have him checked by your veterinarian.

Another benefit of set feedings is that a dog who eats on a schedule poops on a schedule. In addition, if you live in an urban area, leaving a bowl of kibble on the ground all day can attract unwanted house guests, like cockroaches and mice. Gina Lopez’s lost years in Africa: “When one doesn’t have much, one treasures every little bit” Many great names in Philippine culture passed away last year but none resonated as much with ANCX readers as ABSCBN’s own, the heiress and philanthropist Gina Lopez who, at 18, left her sheltered life in Manila to become a missionary in impoverished areas in Portugal, India, and Africa. In this self-penned essay she originally wrote for the now defunct Rogue, the former DENR secretary and Bantay Bata founder recounts the path that led her away from privilege and into enlightenment.

Caffeine may offset some health risks of diets high in fat, sugar CHICAGO — Caffeine may offset some of the negative effects of an obesogenic diet by reducing the storage of lipids in fat cells and limiting weight gain and the production of triglycerides, according to a study in rats posted on the website of the University of Illinois (UI) this week.

For four weeks, the rats in the study ate a diet that contained 40 percent fat,

45 percent carbohydrate and 15 percent protein.

They also ingested one of the forms of caffeine in an amount equivalent to that of a human who drinks four cups of coffee daily.

The researchers performed cell culture studies in which they exposed adipose cells from mice to synthetic caffeine or the coffee or mate caffeine extracts, and found that

regardless of its source, caffeine decreased the accumulation of lipids in adipose cells by 20 percent to 41 percent.

To be specific, the rats that consumed the caffeine extracted from mate tea gained 16 percent less weight and accumulated 22 percent less body fat than the rats that consumed decaf feinated mate tea.

Higher body weight can increase certain cancer survival CANBERRA — Australian scientists have found that higher body weight could increase the chance of beating certain cancers.

In the study, a team from Flinders University revealed that an above average or high body mass index (BMI) can boost the body's response to atezolizumab, a common treatment for non-small-lung cancer (NSCLC).

They found that patients with a high BMI in four trials had a significant reduction in mortality after being treated with atezolizumab compared to those of an average weight.

Ganessan Kichenadasse, the lead researcher from the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer, said the result was surprising because a high BMI has previously been linked to diabetes, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases.

"This is an interesting outcome and it raises the potential to investigate further with other cancers and other anti-cancer

drugs," he said in a media release.

"Previous studies have explored a concept called as 'obesity paradox' where obesity is associated with increased risks for developing certain cancers and, counter-intuitively, may protect and give greater survival benefits in certain individuals.

"Our study provides new evidence to support the hypothesis that high BMI and obesity may be associated with response to immunotherapy."

According to data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in June, two thirds of Australian adults, the equivalent of 12.5 million people, were either overweight or obese as of 2017-2018.

It also found that one quarter of children aged between five and 17 were either overweight or obese.

Despite the results of the study, the Flinders University team stressed the need for a healthy lifestyle to maintain normal weight because of other health problems associated with high BMI. (pna/Xinhua)

DOH reports 1st vape-related lung injury case in C. Visayas CEBU CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) in Region 7 (Central Visayas) is closely monitoring a 16-year-old girl, who is reported to be the first victim of e-cigarette or vape-associated lung injury (EVALI) case in the region.

Dr. Jaime Bernadas, regional director of DOH-7, said surveillance personnel from his office are doing further examinations to support the findings of a private pediatric pulmonologist who reported a female patient suffering from lung injury due to

He said the DOH-7 did not have any idea about the case until their central office informed them about it last week, as the private physician directly reported the case to Manila.

“We were called by the central office to follow up the patient who is supposed to go to the attending physician today. So, there were initial findings that were submitted by the attending physician to the central office in particular because the physician wrote (to them) directly,” he said in a press

conference on Tuesday.

As reported by the private physician, the female patient from Consolacion, Cebu smoked both the traditional combustible cigarette and electronic cigarette known as vape, he said.

Bernadas said the patient who was admitted at the Mendero Medical Center in the town of Consolacion initially showed difficulty in breathing.

Upon further evaluation by the attending physician, he said the patient met the case criteria for EVALI based on the guidelines of the US Centers for Disease Control.

After several dosages of medications, however, the patient was reportedly discharged from the hospital.

“As per initial report by the physician, this is attributed to e-cigarette use. We will be trying to do further examinations,” Bernadas said, adding that they based their findings on the diagnosis from the hospital records.

The regional director of DOH-7 warned smokers about the effects of “vaping”.

He said he supported the move of the Food and Drug Administration to regulate the sale of vape or e-cigarette in the market.

“Because they are still smoke. Second, it has chemical components. If there are chemical components, there are tendencies for lung injury irritation, allergies if you have (it), chemical intoxication if you have (it),” he said.

He urged parents not to allow their children, especially minors, to use vape and e-cigarettes. (PNA)

All of the caffeine treatments, regardless of origin, have significantly downregulated the expression of both Fasn and Lpl. In the cell cultures, Fasn expression diminished by 31 percent to 39 percent, while Lpl expression decreased by 51 percent to 69 percent among cells treated with synthetic caffeine or the caffeine from mate tea or coffee, the researchers found.

In the rats that consumed the mate tea caffeine, expression of Fasn decreased by 39 percent in their fat tissue and by 37 percent in their livers.

The decreased expression of Fasn and two other genes in the liver evoked lower production of low-density lipoprotein

cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver as well, according to the study.

Mate tea is an herbal beverage rich in phytochemicals, flavonoids and amino acids that is consumed as a stimulant by people in southeastern Latin American countries. The amount of caffeine per serving in mate tea ranges from 65-130 milligrams, compared with 30-300 milligrams of caffeine in a cup of brewed coffee.

"The consumption of caffeine from mate or from other sources alleviated the negative impact of a high-fat, high-sucrose diet on body composition due to the modulation of certain lipogenic enzymes in both adipose tissue and the liver," said Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, a co-author of the study and director of the division of nutritional sciences at UI. "The decreased expression of Fasn and Lpl brought about lower synthesis and accumulation of triglycerides in the adipose tissue."

NHCP warns against disrespecting national anthem after Bretman Rock video resurfaces MANILA — The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on Friday issued a notice against disrespecting the country's national anthem after a clip of Internet sensation Bretman Rock "twerking" to it resurfaced online.

The commission, without mentioning Rock's name, said that it has received complaints over a video showing a man dancing to the national anthem.

It reminded everyone that doing so constitutes a violation of the Flag law and could lead to a P5,000 to P20,000 fine, or imprisonment of not more than one year.

The NHCP also said that the national anthem should be respected at all

times, and that it shall not be played for mere amusement and entertainment purposes, with a few exceptions.

There was no reference to Rock's video in the letter, but the timing has led many to assume that it was calling out the Internet star.

It was right before the end of 2019 when the video of Rock lip syncing and then dancing to "Lupang Hinirang" began popping up again on online sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

The video, which was first uploaded

by Rock on Instagram Stories three months ago, also saw him "twerk" to the national anthem for a few seconds.

He has nearly 14 million followers on the site.

Moments after he originally posted it, Rock himself admitted that his video had been disrespectful and immediately took it down.

Rock is a Philippines-born vlogger who moved to Hawaii when he was 8.

He has since become a bonafide online star, landing deals with several international beauty brands.

He was recently named the Beauty Influencer of 2019 at the E! People's Choice Award in Los Angeles, and made his New York Fashion Week debut last September after being invited to events

Siargao’s popular lagoon to be closed off for a month

MANILA — Heads up to those looking to travel to Siargao this month.

The popular Sugba Lagoon is due to be closed off to tourists for a month for rehabilitation.

This is part of the annual initiative by the local government to preserve its popular tourist spots, reports online said, and this year's cleanup will run from January 10 to February 10.

The Sugba Lagoon is best known for its pristine, blue-green waters and has been one of the go-to places for cliff divers. Local website Spot also noted the place for its delicious seafood.

It was featured in the movie, "Siargao," starring Kapamilya stars Jericho Rosales and Erich Gonzales, which was named Second Best Picture of the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival.

PH to stop sending workers to Kuwait THE Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) will declare a partial ban on the deployment of household workers to Kuwait, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd said.

Bello said the partial deployment ban would not cover returning workers, skilled workers and professionals.

He said the partial ban was recommended by Labor Attache Nasser Mustafa as Kuwaiti authorities are investigating the killing of Jeanelyn Villavende.

Based on preliminary reports submitted by Mustafa of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Kuwait, Villevende was beaten to death. She was already dead when brought to a hospital. Attending nurses reported that she was “black and blue.”

Villavende’s family last talked to her in October. On December 13, the family again called Jeanelyn but her female employer said she was busy.

The exact date of Villavende’s death has yet to be determined.

Her employer has been detained in Kuwait.

“This should serve as a clear message to Kuwaiti authorities. The partial ban may ripen into total deployment ban if justice for Jeanelyn Villavende is not met,” Bello said.

“We will also ask Villavende’s recruitment agency to explain their inaction.

As early as September, she already complained about maltreatment and underpayment of salary. She also repeatedly requested the agency for repatriation, but they did not do anything,” he added.

Malacañang on Wednesday expressed outrage over Villavende’s death, saying it was “a clear disregard” of the agreement between the Philippines and Kuwait.

“The Palace expresses its outrage over the death of Filipino worker, Jeanelyn Padernal Villavende, allegedly in the hands of her female employer who is now in the custody of Kuwaiti authorities,” Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

“We consider Jeanelyn’s tragic death a clear disregard of the agreement signed by both our country and Kuwait in 2018 which seeks to uphold and promote the protection of the rights and welfare of our workers in Kuwait,” he added.

At the House of Representatives, Rep. Enrico Pineda sought an investigation of the possible violation of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Philippines and Kuwait.

Pineda said the MoA requires both countries to uphold ethical recruitment policies, systems, and procedures for the recruitment and employment of domestic workers subject to their laws and regulations. It also requires employers to provide food, housing and clothing to their workers; and for the countries to take legal action against erring employers.

“As chairman of the Committee on Labor and Employment and likewise the senior vice chairman of the Overseas Workers Affairs Committee, I am pushing for our government to impose a deployment ban to Kuwait until we are satisfied with their government’s actions with respect to the death of Jeanelyn Villavende; until justice is served,” Pineda said.

“If the Kuwaiti Government is actually concerned about our workers, it should ensure that they are well protected.

Because we will not allow our vulnerable Filipinos to be deployed to work in foreign lands without the assurance that the foreign state will give them the protection they need. I call upon all our government agencies to shed light on the matter so that Congress may act upon these issues and consider necessary legislation and policy direction,” he added.

ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap said Villavende’s death was “a blatant disregard not only to the agreement between Kuwait and Philippines on OFW (overseas Filipino workers) welfare but to human dignity as a whole.”

“Dapat maparusahan ang gumawa nito sa ating kababayan at gumulong ang hustisya sa kasong ito (The perpetrators must be punished and justice must be served),” Yap said.

US Sen. Markey to Duterte: Travel ban won't silence me MANILA — US Sen. Edward Markey (Massachusetts) said that the Philippine government’s travel ban against him for voicing support to Sen. Leila De Lima will not silence him.

In a statement, Markey said: “President [Rodrigo] Duterte is sorely mistaken if he thinks he can silence my voice and that of my colleagues.”

Markey is the third American senator that the Philippine government banned from entering the country.

Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Markey was included in the ban for supporting the travel restriction against officials involved in the detention of De Lima.

Amid the travel ban, Markey remains unfazed and pointed out that Duterte “has already failed to silence Sen. De Lima, Maria Ressa and others in his country who have spoken truth to power.”

“I stand with the people of the Philippines with my state’s vibrant Filipino-American community in fighting for the highest democratic ideals and against the strongman tactics of the Duterte government,” he added.

The 24-year-old Obiena vaulted his way to the Summer Games with a gold-winning jump of 5.81 meters in the Salto Con L’asta In Piazza Chiari in Italy in September — surpassing the Olympic qualifying standard of 5.80m.

The 27-year-old Petecio became the second Filipina fighter to win in the world tournament after Josie Gabuco in 2012.
