President’s Message I think it’s safe to say, Spring is officially here, and our building season is underway! Although we may still feel the strain of the slower building economy, I am hearing a lot of buzz generated from our fellow builders in the continuing uptick of activity for new build enquiries. Our current inventory remains low with 172 active listings of single-family homes in the Bismarck Mandan area. We are gaining a lot of optimism as we head into the 2024 building season! We had our 32nd annual Spring Parade of Homes in April, with 31 registered homes participating in this year’s spring event. I hope a lot of you got the chance to get out and check out these beautiful homes built by our local builders. A quick shout out to all our local builders who entered their homes, ANDREW MELDAHL 2024 BMHBA PRESIDENT as well as our staff, volunteers, and sponsors! You guys are what makes this wonderful event happen. IF you missed out on the Spring Parade, remember we have the Fall Parade coming up September 26th- 29th. Mark down on your calendar to come join us at the Spring Mixer Tuesday May 14 th at Bennigan’s in Mandan for socializing, food, drinks, and prize giveaways. You still have time to register, visit the BMHBA website at BMHBA.com and go to events. Hope to see many of you there!

City and County The Negative Effect of Mud on Our Streets. Did you know all the stormwater runoff from streets, roof tops, yards, and concrete in the City of Bismarck drains to the Missouri River? Our underground stormwater infrastructure is a maze of local inlets, pipes, ponds, and drainageways, that ultimately flow into the Missouri River. Sediment from stormwater runoff muddies river water, causing fish and plants to die from lack of sunlight and damages entire Ecosystems. Federal, State, and local regulations require contractors and property owners to clean up worksite messes by the end of the workday, or a fine can be assessed. A good way to think of the required cleanup is that by doing so, you are being a good neighbor, a responsible and thoughtful community member, and are setting an example for others, all while making a good impression on our community. Builders and subcontractors all play a part in keeping mud off the streets. Most sediment that finds its way to our ponds and drainageways comes from construction-related activities like vehicles and equipment tracking mud onto roadways, and erosion from worksites. Of course, it is easier on employees when material delivery companies drop off lumber or shingles right next to a structure, directly on the roof, or in the basement, but at muddy job sites a better practice would be to have materials dropped only as far as the delivery truck boom will reach. Encourage site workers and employees to park on the street and take a few extra steps to avoid a muddy mess instead of driving right up to the front door. Treat construction sites as if you were the one living next door and consider what you would like to see in your neighborhood. On days when you know a muddy mess cannot be avoided, plan on having a sweeper ready for the required cleanup. Not only does proper cleanup help you avoid negative calls and complaints from our community, particularly those in the neighborhood of the job site, it is also the responsible and correct way to treat the site. Talking with your delivery vendors and employees about doing the right thing and having a cleanup plan in place for those muddy days will help you avoid leaving a block-long mess from your job site. A final point to consider: Our community sees your business’s signs at job sites and on work trucks and equipment in construction areas. Your practices determine if that impression is positive or negative.

Around Our State May is National Home Remodeling Month! The median age of the American home is 39 years old. Add to that the increasing price of new construction over the last decade and the growing popularity of television programs featuring dramatic home renovations, and it’s no wonder Americans spent an estimated $471 billion on home remodeling in the last four quarters. Hiring a local remodeler member will help ensure you’ll get integrity, professionalism, and expertise through your renovation process. Members pledge to adhere to a strict code of ethics and have access to the highest degree of training and professionalism through business and technical information and leading education programs.
