President’s Message
Spring is finally here and our 2026 building season is in full swing! In the middle of April, we had another successful builder engagement meeting with our fellow city representatives of Bismarck/Mandan and our local builders. There were many topics covered including new and upcoming land development codes, building codes, and energy codes. These meetings have been a valuable re-source to all the local builder members.
The main event for this month was our 34th annual Spring Parade of Homes which is held two weeks later than normal. This event was May 14-17th and featured 37 new construction homes.
Mark your calendars and the save the date for our Annual Golf Tournament on July 14th at Hawktree Golf Club! Registration will be opening soon, so keep an eye out. We cap the tournament at 36 teams, and spots fill quickly every year. We typically end up with a waiting list, so be sure to register early to secure your team’s spot for this popular outing!
One main goal for our local organization this year is membership growth. Our growth in membership recruitment and support is vital and it takes all of us to build a strong membership and local organization. Our association does many wonderful things for our building industry. Let's continue to grow and support one another! Have a wonderful spring and see you back in June!

Government Affairs Update – HBA May Newsletter
Spring marks a busy time of year in the home building industry. Local political campaigns are ramping up as well in anticipation of the June 9th election. Advocacy is one of the most important aspects of membership in the BMHBA and our Government Affairs Committee works to stay informed on local issues and advocate on the association’s behalf. An important part of that advocacy is supporting local candidates which will best promote the building industry.
The process begins with the Committee deciding which races will have the largest impact on the industry. The Committee then compiles a list of questions for candidates in those races aimed at evaluating the candidate’s understanding of challenges faced by the industry as well as the candidate’s stance on those issues and ideas they may have to encourage building and home ownership. The committee meets and discusses the questionnaires from the candidates who have provided responses and vets them against goals and objectives of the BMHBA. The candidate’s previous support of BMHBA related issues as well as any other connections to the building industry play a key role in which candidates the committee decides to support.
For the Mandan City Commission race, the Committee supports Ryan Heinsohn. In Bismarck, the Committee supports Amelia Doll for City Commission and Mike Schmitz to continue to serve as Mayor. The Committee feels that their goals and policies best align with the BMHBA and building industry and we would encourage members to consider voting for these candidates.
In addition to electing local representatives, on June 9th, Bismarck voters will decide whether to extend the ½ cent sales tax on roadway infrastructure projects. The tax was originally passed in 2018 and is set to expire in 2029. Voting yes would extend the tax through 2038 and would apply funds to a specific list of projects which can found on the city’s website. The BMHBA urges its members to support the extension of the sales tax because the funds have directly benefited new developments throughout the city. Improvements on Ash Coulee Drive, South Washington Street and East Century Avenue have provided additional access for new developments and helped to spread the costs for roadway projects to all who use them rather than solely by the homeowners in the adjacent developments. Finally, we encourage members to support NDAB-PAC, which provides the funding to support candidates both on the local and state level. The Bismarck Mandan Professional Women in Building Scholarship was created to support and encourage the next generation of women entering the building industry, and this year we were honored to present the scholarship to local student Ashley Mosset who will be graduating from Mandan High School. Ashley will be attending Bismarck State College to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering, with the career goal of becoming a successful construction project manager. We had so many outstanding applicants this year and it is so inspiring to see all the young women pursuing careers in the trades and building industry. We are excited to play even a small part in supporting the future of women in construction and leadership. Congratulations Ashley!!

How It Started: Ironside Construction was named in honor of my father. He was given the name when he served in Vietnam. When he returned home, he used Ironsides as his CB handle as a truck driver.
A Day in the Life: A typical day for me is starting in the morning by doing the office side of things, and then working with the guys onsite as much as time allows that day. Although no two days are the same, my afternoons are typically filled with phone calls and meetings, if I'm not at the jobsite.
Why Construction? My grandfather and uncles were carpenters, and I love working with my hands. I took every shop and woodworking class in school and feel like this industry chose me.
If I wasn’t in the Construction business, I’d be... A US national park ranger or a tour guide across the globe.
Looking Ahead: I am looking forward to building our new office and focusing on the custom home market.
What Sets Us Apart: Ironsides is a small, family owned, local business. I am working side by side with my crew on our projects. All my children have been a part of this company, as well as my two sons-in-law. We also work on both residential & commercial projects.
What is your favorite quote that speaks to you or business model the most? Ironsides-Noun) A strong person with great power and endurance or resistance.
What is your favorite part of your job? Working crew, and the sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
Outside the Job: I love to spend quality time with my family. I love being outdoors, kayaking, hiking, camping, or riding my sports bike. I volunteer on the board of the Mandan Touchdown Club where we host fund raisers and operate the youth football program for grades 3-6. I also really enjoy traveling to new places and learning about local cultures.

Remodelers in May we celebrate you! This month is National Home Remodeling month in which the remodeling industry and professionals are recognized. Increasing home value, completing needed maintenance and improving energyefficiency are just some of the reasons to remodel. Spring has sprung and there's no better time to celebrate the power of rebuilding.
Exciting news for our summer events, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Chairman Bill Owens will be our special guest in Medora! NDAB meetings and the Summer Social will take place on Tuesday, August 4th at the Rough Riders Hotel with a golf event on Wednesday, August 5th at the Bully Pulpit Golf Course. To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we will be taking a tour of the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library while we are in town. Further details and registration will be coming soon!
NAHB’s Spring Leadership Meetings & Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. is coming up on June 9-13. The Legislative Conference, NAHB’s most important lobbying event, will take place on Wednesday, June 10, in conjunction with the Spring Leadership Meetings. This is a unique opportunity for members to speak one-on-one with our elected representatives on Capitol Hill and to push for housing policies that will help our industry. The NAHB Fall Leadership Meetings will be in Detroit, Michigan on October 6-8.
In a letter signed by 76 representatives, the Real Estate Caucus and the Build America Caucus called on House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to remove harmful provisions in the Senate-passed 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act that mandates the forced sale of single-family build-to-rent (BTR) housing. The letter stated that Section 901 of the Senate bill, as drafted, “would have far reaching and unintended consequences that run counter to the bill’s stated goal of expanding housing opportunity.” NAHB estimates that single-family housing starts may drop by 40,000 units per year as a result of this mandate and has actively campaigned for its removal.
