Offering dates, times, locations, event descriptions and more, ’tis the

season to mark your calendars, so you don’t miss a thing.

Also, be sure to download the town’s app to access the “Christmas in Wake Forest” function. The function is designed to offer smartphone users instant access to all the town’s holiday happenings. Police Department’s Turkey Drive is underway » The WFPD is accepting monetary donations through Saturday, Nov. 19, as part of its 10th Annual Turkey Drive. Donations of frozen turkeys may also be dropped off at the Wake Forest Police Department, 225 S. Taylor St., on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. until noon.

The police department will distribute the turkeys while they last on Monday, Nov. 21, from 9-11 a.m., at the Wake Forest Community House, 133 W. Owen Ave. Anyone wishing to contribute to this year’s Turkey Drive should contact Officer M.W. Sattler at 919-795-7270.

Shop With A Cop brings joy to kids For the 18th year, the Wake Forest Police Department will host a holiday shopping spree for Wake Forest children in need. Approximately 30 children will be paired with a police officer and together they will shop for a winter coat and other items of their choice on Wednesday, Dec. 14.

Pictures With Santa Wake Forest Downtown, Inc. offers three opportunities for pictures with Santa (look for the Santa icon on these pages). There is no charge for having your photo taken by our professional photographer. You may take your own pictures, too! Photos can be viewed and purchased at the Wake Forest CVS, 245 E. Roosevelt Ave., on the Monday after the picture is taken.

Wait times are shortest during the Downtown Holiday Open House.

The holiday season officially begins with the Lighting of Wake Forest. Mayor Vivian Jones will lead a countdown to light the town’s Christmas tree followed by the eagerly anticipated arrival of Santa Claus on a fire truck. The event will include performances by local choirs, free hot cocoa and a children’s craft activity.

Pictures With Santa will be offered from 6:45-8:30 p.m. Guests wishing to have a picture taken with Santa during the Lighting of Wake Forest must pick up a time ticket in the town hall lobby beginning at 5:30 p.m. Designed to reduce wait times, each time ticket will indicate the time your group should arrive at the line-up to have your picture taken.

There are a limited number of time tickets available and a ticket is required to visit with Santa on Friday evening.

Historic Home Tour Offered only in evennumbered years, the Christmas Historic Home Tour is a selfguided tour featuring several Wake Forest homes and other properties decorated for the holidays and open for viewing. The tour is held rain or shine.

Tickets are $18 in advance and $24 on the day of the tour (tax included). Advance tickets can be purchased online at wakeforestnc. gov (search “historic home tour”). Recycle your Christmas tree Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 28, the town will collect and recycle live Christmas trees from residential homes according to its normal yard waste collection schedule. The trees will be ground into mulch and made available to residents upon request.

All Wake Forest residents whose yard waste is collected by the town may participate in the “Treecycling” program.

To recycle your tree, please remove all decorations, tinsel, nails, stands and bags from the tree and set it behind the curb for collection. Residents are reminded that artificial trees cannot be recycled.

he Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts will commemorate its third year of bringing extraordinary and diverse cultural and performing arts experiences to our community and help raise money for its free community events and cultural education scholarships during the 2016 Renaissance Centre Broadway Ball.

Scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12, the event will be held from 6-10 p.m. at the Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. The ball will have a “To Broadway and Back” theme and feature a show-stopping performance by JTL (Just a Touch of Love) performing a variety of dance favorites.

In addition to JTL’s dynamic performance,

the occasion will include a Broadway reception, a three-course meal, along with beer and wine available for purchase. Each ticketholder will receive one complimentary drink ticket for the bar and one complimentary photo shoot by TapSnap.

A portion of the evening’s proceeds will help fund community programs and educational scholarships, so guests will also enjoy a silent auction and other fun games.

Town urges pet owners to obey leash laws The Town of Wake Forest is encouraging local pet owners to be a great pet owner by obeying Wake County’s leash law.

The town regularly receives complaints from residents about dogs running at large – particularly at town parks. Although Wake Forest does not have an ordinance pertaining to dogs, Wake County Animal Control has jurisdiction to enforce animal control laws within the town and its park system.

Any owner permitting an animal to be at large shall pay a civil penalty of $100 for the first violation.

Flaherty Dog Park, 1100 N. White St., provides a place for dog owners to let their pets run free safely and legally without a leash.

Approximately two acres in size, the park is open from dawn to dusk. For more information about Flaherty Dog Park, visit wakeforestnc.gov and search “Flaherty Dog Park.”

Young women invited to free empowerment workshop The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is proud to announce the inaugural project R.I.S.E., a women’s workshop to help women Rise, Inspire, Succeed, and Empower.

Rogers Road bridge on schedule to open in November The anticipated completion date for the Rogers Road bridge replacement project is Tuesday, Nov. 8. Please note that the N.C. Department of Transportation has offered incentives to the contractor to complete the project early. Likewise, fines will be imposed for every day the project extends beyond Nov. 8.

Businesses in the Rogers Road area are planning a re-opening celebration on Saturday, Nov. 12. The Town of Wake Forest encourages residents to come out and support the many businesses who have been impacted by the road closure. Introducing “Discover Wake Forest” video series The Town of Wake Forest and Brios Media are partnering to produce a series of short videos highlighting popular family-friendly destinations in and around Wake Forest. Entitled Discover Wake Forest, the series includes videos on these Wake Forest treasures: the Wake Forest Historical Museum, E. Wake Forest to receive $500K grant The Clean Water Management Trust Fund (CWMTF) recently announced the Town of Wake Forest as the recipient of a $513,581 acquisitions grant.

The funding will support easement acquisitions along the Smith Creek Greenway corridor and help finance Phase 2 construction of the Smith Creek Greenway – a 2014 bond referendum project.

Wake Forest plans to extend Smith Creek Greenway northward approximately 2.8 miles from its current terminus at Burlington Mills Road and connect it with another section of the trail. The connection will complete the missing link to the existing Burlington Mills section of Smith Creek Greenway and to Raleigh’s Neuse River Greenway via the Wake Forest Connector bridge.

As part of this project, Wake Forest also plans to construct a trailhead that includes parking along One World Way. The design for Phase 2 of the Smith Creek Greenway is scheduled to begin in October.

Wake Forest is the sole Wake County town to receive CWMTF funding during the current cycle.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Register now for historic district guided walking tour The Town of Wake Forest will offer a free walking tour of the local Wake Forest Historic District on Wednesday, Nov. 16, beginning at 1 p.m.

Led by architectural historian and Town Historic Preservation Planner Michelle Michael, the tour will include areas along North Main Street, North Avenue, Front Street, and South Avenue. Along the way the group will discuss the developmental and architectural history of the area, along with the significant men and women who lived in the homes. Individual homes will not be toured.

The tour begins and ends at the Wake Forest Historical Museum, 414 N. Main St. Space is limited to the first 12 participants to sign up, so preregistration is required by completing the online sign-up form at wakeforestnc.gov (search “historic district walking tour”).

New PRCR video highlights offerings The Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department has released a new promotional video highlighting its array of cultural and athletic programming, parks and greenways, urban forestry initiatives, and special events. Good Neighbor of the Year award winners The Wake Forest Human Relations Council announced the 2016 Good Neighbor of the Year youth and adult award winners during the Good Neighbor Day celebration in September.

Brianna Hernandez Brianna was nominated by her parents, Amy and Richard Hernandez, who wrote in their nomination narrative that their daughter is committed to serving Wake Forest “and developing herself to become a better citizen.”

An honor roll student at Wake Forest High School and the “Commander of Saber Team” in the JROTC, Brianna has volunteered at several community events, including the Wake Forest Fire Department Fish Fry, Paws 4 Life 5K, the annual Purple Heart Dinner, and the Wake Forest Charity Car Show.

She is also an honored member of the “Daughters of 1812” due to

her academic excellence, leadership, military discipline, dependability, and patriotism.

Hank Pierwola Patricia Schneck nominated Hank Pierwola. She began her narrative by writing: “Anyone whose path has crossed the life of Hank Pierwola is very fortunate.”

She went on to note that for many years he has delivered The Wake Forest Weekly, been a member of the Wake Forest VFW, and worked at the annual Purple Heart Dinner. He also coordinates the American Red Cross Blood Drive at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

“He has taken those in need to doctors appointments and to church, always with a smile and a touch of his dry wit. This gentle man epitomizes the phrase ’Good Neighbor’ so worthy of recognition yet humbled to be called out by name for his good deeds.”

Waste Wizard helps you recycle wisely The “Waste Wizard” is a handy online tool designed to help you sort your household waste properly. Simply type in the name of an item (such as “wrapping paper”) and the wizard will tell you whether it should go in your recycling cart or garbage can.

Some items such as motor oil or flourescent

bulbs are not accepted in either cart and must be dropped off at a county facility. If in doubt, check with the Waste Wizard and it will tell you if an item is considered hazardous and where the item can be dropped off for safe handling.
