STRUTH BE TOLD WITH

JUSTIN HEAZLEWOOD

Each May, I think about schizophrenia (I’m trying to become an expert on it, and I still can’t spell it. Everything about the condition is difficult, down to its name). This is because 24 May is World Schizophrenia Awareness Day. It’s one of the lesser-known awareness days, which is fitting, given that it’s arguably the least discussed issue in society.

My theory is that schizophrenia still freaks everyone out, and so is about the one thing society has collectively agreed it’s okay to keep sweeping under the rug. Schizophrenia is the black sheep of the mental ‘wellness’ movement, if you will.

In fact, where possible, commentators have taken to not even naming conditions such as bipolar or schizoaffective disorder; they’ll simply say a person is having ‘mental ill-health’ - a politesounding euphemism that I’m not terribly fond of. We don’t say someone with cancer is experiencing ‘physical health issues.’

Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to use the 13-letter word that would clean up in Scrabble, as often as possible. It’s part of a general life phase in which I have crawled out from under the rug as a carer of a mother with the condition.

Schizophrenia is so rarely covered in the media, I can pretty much remember the last seven times it has over the past 15 years:

1 Musician and comedian Heidi Everett was on ABC News in January, saying there was a nationwide shortage of the antipsychotic medication quetiapine (Seroquel).

2 The terrible events at the Bondi shopping centre in 2024 were tied to a person with the condition (The Project had a representative from SANE on the show with lived experience to offer their perspective).

3 Dylan Frost (pictured left), lead singer of Sydney band Sticky Fingers, was cancelled from Bluesfest in 2023 for alleged abusive behaviour. He revealed he had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder).

4 SBS’s The Feed published an online story in 2021. A young woman, Phoebe, said the stigma around schizophrenia was worse than the condition itself.

Sunnyboys lead singer Jeremy Oxley, was an intimate portrayal of living with the condition and the plight of his partner caring for him.

voices at some point in their lives. It’s not always linked to schizophrenia.

5 SBS’s Insight featured an episode about hearing voices in 2020. Approximately 10-25% of people will experience hearing

6 The Sunnyboy, a 2013 documentary about The

7 Andrew Denton’s Enough Rope produced the documentary Angels & Demons in 2008. They recreated the soundscape of what a person hearing voices might experience. It featured an interview with Heidi Everett (pictured), whom I mentioned earlier!

When I gave my recent interview for ABC Conversations, I made sure to emphasise the beautiful, thoughtful, caring, sweet and kind person my mother is. My role in life is to help humanise the medical condition, which just happens to make people behave strangely, through no fault of their own. According to SANE, symptoms of schizophrenia can include: hallucinations, delusions, unusual or disrupted speech, disorganised behaviour, low energy, low motivation, or lack of emotional expression. Schizophrenia has the same ratio as autism: 1 in 100. It derives from the Greek word meaning ‘split mind.’ It has nothing to do with multiple personalities. There is a separate reality for the person who is unwell. Diagnosis usually occurs between the ages of 18 and 30; however, it’s not necessarily a life sentence. People can recover, and its symptoms mellow with age.

Having said that, the life expectancy of someone with schizophrenia is, on average, 20 years less than that of the rest of the population.

It’s abstract, amorphous, and holds a carnival mirror to the soul of a person and those around them. It’s one of the hardest things anyone will ever have to go through. This includes the loved ones caring for them.

People with schizophrenia are highly vulnerable. Statistically, they are more likely to be the recipients of violence, not the instigators. One of the biggest dangers they face is loneliness from a loss of friends. I can vouch for this. I watched it happen to Mum.

People with schizophrenia need our patience, understanding, and love - however and whenever we can spare it. Knowledge is power. The more we educate ourselves, the more powerful we can operate as a human society.

Music for Canberra is opening its doors this August for a series of free Open Days at the Ainslie Arts Centre, inviting kids and families to experience the joy of music firsthand.

Whether you’re a beginner, or a returning player, the sessions are a great way to get involved. Try out a choir or bring your instrument to start joining with an ensemble. Our ensembles give children and young people the chance to learn, rehearse and perform with peers under the guidance of leading local conductors and educators.

Music is more than a skill; it’s a way of building confidence, connection and a lifelong sense of belonging.

The origin story of Coin Collector by Lucky Jim

“A long, long time ago, when the ACT was in lockdown and I was an unemployed performer, I came up with an idea to keep myself busy.

“I decided to interview primary-aged kids in the neighbourhood. I asked them about their lockdown experience and what it was like for them and their families. I also asked about their thoughts on music and collaborated with each of them on a song.

Canberra Youth Orchestra (Advanced) 9:00am–12:00pm

“I broadcast these edited interviews on a weekly livestream show that I ran out of the dance studio at Belco Arts. During the livestream show, I also played a live version of the song I had written for the person I had interviewed that week.

“The original concept for Coin Collector came from my friend Josh, who lives down the road. At the time, Josh was obsessed with coins and the naval military history of the early 20th century. During the interview, I queried Josh on what type of song I should write.

“Fortunately, instead of a shanty about WWII submarines, he wanted a rap about coin collecting.

“I whipped one up and presented it on the Lucky Jim Livestream show. The following year, I was lucky enough to receive an ArtsACT grant and recorded an album of songs generated from those interviews. Simon Milman and I further collaborated on the song, and it soon became a crowd favourite at This Way Orkestra gigs.

“Many Thanks! – Jim”

Forming in the early 2000s, Melbourne Ska Orchestra bring together some of Australia’s finest musicians and performers, helmed by Nicky Bomba (John Butler Trio, Bomba, Busyamento).

An orchestra with a difference comprising up to 26 members, the group’s 2013 debut self-titled release earned MSO their first of many ARIA Award nominations, with the band going on to win Best World Music Album in 2016 for their sophomore album, Sierra Kilo Alpha, and another win for Best World

Music Album in 2019 for their compilation album

One Year of Ska; an opus that saw MSO release a song every week for an entire year, culminating 52 tracks for the final result.

Produced by enigmatic leader Nicky Bomba, along with MSO’s studio crew, new track Walls of Jericho has them excited.

“We’re thrilled to share the second taste of our forthcoming album, and yes, John Wayne is riding with us on this journey!” the band share. “This

record has a wider lens on our musical journey— dipping into cinematic reggae, big-band prose, and soulful protest vibes.

“Expect a melting pot of deep grooves, lush horn lines, and a global soundscape that keeps one foot on the dancefloor and the other in the clouds.”

nonbinarycode was born in 2019 from the minds of InkBits (they/them) and The Hardman (he/him). Later joined by Sorrento (they/them) and Racso (he/him), the band blend punk, cabaret, grunge, and stadium rock into a sound that defies catergorisation.

With new a EP, I’ve Got ADHD, and a Launch Party on Saturday, 9 August at Smith’s Alternative, BMA caught up with the NBC-ers to get the low down.

“We are unapologetically queer, fiercely independent, and we channel our lived experiences into music that tells the stories mainstream media ignores.

“We exist to carve out space for LGBTQIA+ voices, to be a fierce reminder that your identity, whatever that looks and feels like, is valid. We are the loud soundtrack to your rebellion and your healing.

“Every lyric, every show, every scream into the mic is a declaration that queer lives matter, that our stories deserve to be heard, and that art can transform isolation into community. Our live shows are electric and raw, and are spaces where people can come as they are, dance, scream, and leave feeling seen and valued.

“Our latest single, I’ve Got ADHD, is a lighthearted yet gritty pop-punk dive into the chaos of neurodiversity, viewed through the lens of InkBits and The Hardman.

“With a grinding ’90s riff and hooks that will spin around your head for days, we’ve turned the reality of living with ADHD into a sonic hug for those who’ve felt misunderstood, inviting you into our hectic minds while leaving you with an anthem you’ll be singing tomorrow.

In a world that still tells queer people to shrink, nonbinarycode are QUEER, LOUD, and PROUD. We’re not just a band; we’re a movement for visibility, representation, and community, because when 86% of LGBTQIA+ youth say they feel safer seeing themselves represented*, we’re here to give them that mirror. With 89% of queer youth experiencing hate and 56% of LGBTQIA+ youth being neurodivergent, we know that community can save lives— and music is how we build it.

Come join the chaos, colour, and community at our I’ve Got ADHD EP Launch Party on Saturday, 9 August at Smith’s Alternative – a night where we turn up the volume on visibility, community, and celebration.

BIRDCAPITAL THE HOUR BETWEEN

There is something at once translucent and weighty about Birdcapital’s debut LP, The Hour Between. It floats, it flickers, it glows— but it never evaporates.

Helmed by Canberra-based artist Palimah Panichit, Birdcapital offers a lo-fi majesty that sounds as though it was dreamt up in the narrow space between midnight and dawn. Indeed, the album frames itself around that very liminality—literally from Dusk to Dawn.

Birdcapital first crept into view with a handful of singles, most notably Be Brave, a track defined by its halting groove, muted acoustic tones, and a hush of romantic sensibility. The presence of Saulė on that track offered a counterpoint, a kind of spectral mirror to Panichit’s intimate vocal delivery.

The Hour Between harbours a sonic architecture that is far more ambitious by comparison: one part folk-pop chamber, one part experimental void, three parts private diary.

Dusk opens the collection with a quiet confidence: acoustic textures and vaporous vocals rise into the frame like fog over a lake. Samsāra arrives like a choral afterimage, opening on a lone vocal sample—fragmentary, almost overheard—before a collective choral swell lifts the mood into a brief yet distilled melodic motif.

Entre Chien et Loup is where Birdcapital begins to tilt into something deeper and stranger: fragmented vocals, rhythmic obfuscation, and eerie overtones that suggest this is not simply an album of songs but of states.

Mephistopheles grins behind a veil of bass and digital tremors. It is gentle but dangerous, seductive but skewed.

The centrepiece, Hour Between, fuses sub-bass, synth glint and rap-kissed phrasing into something part-hopeful, part-hysterical.

There’s a tension in Panichit’s work that hovers between clarity and collapse. Tracks like Limbo and Breathe play with genre like a distracted lover: a bit of this, a moment of that. Get Home Safe is almost prose-poetry folded into song form.

The Tower, Acts I and II, function as pillars in this strange sonic temple. Vocoder ghosts, distorted narratives, fractured rhythm. It is part sci-fi monologue, part bedroom confession.

Then, with ...And Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, the album almost dares you to stay asleep.

But it is on Dawn that Birdcapital returns to flesh and strings, the voice restored, grounded, still tremulous.

The Hour Between is a remarkable album. It has torque, but it also has ache. It dares to be gentle without being slight, experimental without being evasive.

Panichit has created a piece of art that is more than a mood. It’s a reckoning—soft-spoken and unshakable.

METALISE

THE WORD ON METAL WITH JOSH NIXON DOOMTILDEATH@HOTMAIL.COM

After the all-star nostalgic and triumphant electric retirement party for Sabbath and Ozzy, time has once again shown to wait for no man, even a shirtless Bill Ward. The gig announcements since we last checked in have been utterly ridiculous. There’s so much to look forward to here and a bit up the road for some absolutely fantastic shows. So much so, I will attempt to put this in some form of order.

Kinda redundant to mention, but fans of Karnivool were so enthused by their long-awaited return to Canberra, they went and bought every ticket they could for their 29 July show at The Baso. If you missed out, beg, borrow, or steal!

On Saturday, 2 August, there’s a great show for an even greater cause at The Baso with the Covers For Cancer - Metal for a Cause show.

The proceeds go to Camp Quality, and whipping up those funds will be three sets of covers of Rammstein, Killswitch Engage and Metallica. So, go have a bang for a great cause.

Hardline Media keeps the shows coming, with Doug and the team keeping us VERY busy the rest of this year. Along with the already announced December Baso visit by Cryptopsy, there are newly announced tours from Uli Jon Roth, Combichrist, Arkona & Nytt Land in September (in Sydney), and, this just in... Possessed!

The 40th anniversary of the classic Seven Churches album couldn’t be celebrated in finer fashion than the album in full at The Baso on 1 November. News on supports for the fourdate Oz birthday celebration will no doubt be forthcoming, but what another classic treat courtesy of Hardline!

At the time of writing, some tickets remain for Northlane’s All Over Australia Tour. The Baso plays host to the band’s first capital show in three years, and the occasion will be celebrated by supports Ocean Grove and Mirrors & Heists. I highly doubt any existing tix will last, so don’t dilly-dally!

The Pot Belly continues to go from strength to strength, with the two-night Trapped Under Ice fest on 15 & 16 August looking fantastic. Friday night’s line-up comprises Maggot Cave, Post Human, Master Leonard, Serial Pest and Ragetrigger.

Saturday night is Dark Horse, Futility, Amammoth, O’Sluggard and Bad Form. Each night is 15 bucks, which is ridiculously great value. I was a little surprised to see Master Leonard on the bill after their supposed break-up show at Sunburn a-ways back. But what a great couple of nights, thanks to Grindhead Records.

On Saturday, 23 August, the gates of the underworld open at (checks notes), The Baso, which hosts the Canberra leg of Hell’s Symphony Tour 2025. Where The Devil, Carbon Black, Project: Ultimate Satan, Shatterface and Desolate will warm your winter evening with fire, riff, and brimstone.

After The Baso Staff’s attempt to air out the sulphur from the previous evening’s affairs, Sunday, 24 August sees a visit from Indian death grind lords Gutslit. The Party Down Under 25 tour is a 6-date run for the Mumbai maniacs, and they’re bringing Gosika along for the ride. The Canberra leg includes support from Post Human and Rodenticide

Post Human is also part of the Metal Fiesta at The Baso on 30 August. Again, Shananigans bring the goods with Deprivation and Black Rheno headlining the latest chapter. Rounding out the bulging bill are Futility, Deathbeds, Dead By Dawn, Black Iris and Blackened Dred.

Witchskull has a show coming up on 13 September with a new Canberra act, Storm of Steel (check ‘em out on Bandcamp), and Space On Fire. Hitting up the backroom for maximum volume, you can pick up a ticket at The Baso site right now.

Plenty more are incoming, but a big one is coming up: Canberra’s premier transgressive music event, Essence 2. Held at The Baso over the weekend of 3-5 October, the event includes a Friday pre-fest event curated by QLD/NSW underground label

Gutter Prince Cabal with sets from Destruktor, Aglo, Hebephrenique, Grotesque Bliss and Leaker.

Over the Saturday and Sunday (with Monday being a public holiday), the full line-up features: Life Cult, Pod People, Diploid, Contaminated, Convulsing, Tir, Growth, Teeth Dreams, Golgothan Remains, Mammon’s Throne, Raven, ZCluster, Nontinuum, Bacchus Harsh, Burden Man, Živa, Shay Doe and Jack Napier, Josh Shipton, Oar, Lithik, Bruxist, Knife, Marlēné Claudine Radice, Fukno, Canary Bones, Atavus Infectum, External Organ and Futility.

A full ticket to the festival covers all three nights, with individual tickets also being available. Earlybird tickets are now on sale.

As I said, plenty more incoming, but that’s yer lot for now. See you next time for more filth.

THE DROP

[THE WORD ON EDM/DANCE MUSIC]

G’day-g’day! It’s yer mate Pan, geared up with more goss on what’s happening around Ngunnawal Country.

It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been writing these columns for a whole year now! I couldn’t be more proud to be helping out all of the beautiful people and hard workers in the scene. And it’s made all the more worth it by the positive feedback I get – I’m even getting recognised on the street, which I guess is my fault, considering there’s always a picture of my freaky mug at the top of the column.

Huge thanks to everyone who has given me details on gigs, shared the column around, and shown the love. I’m going to be here for a while, I reckon.

Been feeling the chill? I certainly am. Half of my home is so cold that I can feel it in my bones. I took a day trip to Forest Life on the Saturday and made the mistake of not bringing enough warm gear.

Luckily, I caught Burley Bassweight bringing the heat with an experimental set, spent some time around the fire in the tipi, and even snagged a cappuccino and a bacon and egg sandwich after the sun set. The setup there was immaculate, and the vibes were unreal. So, big ups to RPG and all the crews that made it happen.

Wish I could have stayed longer, but thankfully, they’ll be chucking a sequel at some point – something you should absolutely stay tuned to this column for when more details emerge.

Earlier last month, Headz are Rolling hosted Junglism #9 at Dissent Cafe & Bar, and DAMN did it go off! With all of the venue closures around town, Dissent’s opening provided a much-needed new home for these free Royal Rollers gigs and is, in my humble opinion, the perfect spot. Not only were we blessed with many-a familiar

face, but the City Walk location meant a whole lot of foot traffic and fresh faces, too!

As a result, the crowd matched the joyous energy of sets from Baxter, Lenni, Juzlo, and Tidy & Samwise; some of the best we’ve had in recent memory. First star goes to the crew and the performers for putting on such a memorable night.

Unfortunately, the deep chill of winter means that the gig calendar has become a little sparse. I can’t really blame yas for wanting to stay inside where it’s warm, but I was hoping to escape my four walls and find some heat on the dancefloor!

That being said, I still have some shiny shindigs to report on over the next couple of months, including a couple of big uns that warrant attention.

First up – for those of you willing to drive a couple of hours out, there’s a series of gigs on damn near every weekend called The White Noise Sessions at Sponars Chalet in Kosciuszko – a spot with incredible views and great vibes making for a perfect little getaway. If you’re lucky, you might catch me there at some point!

In GREAT news – it looks like The Vault is making a comeback! If you’ve missed the awesome party warehouse, then Friday, 29 August is the date to circle.

Premier drum ‘n’ bass producer LUUDE is bringing his new label, No Instruction, to town with the help of Decibel Creative. Expect further label favourites and local legends to further lace the line-up.

Headz are Rolling will be having another free gig at Dissent on Saturday, 6 September. I know it’s a fair way away, but considering how unreal the first one was, it’s worth getting the next instalment into your calendars now.

They’ll be monthly from that point out - 18 October and 15 November. How can you say no to a night of free drum ‘n’ bass with so many wonderful people and a killer venue to boot?

The Free Range nest egg has definitely cracked! The professional party-thrower’s many years of hard work is finally culminating in the Free Range Gathering – three days of Spring celebrations from 5 – 8 September

If you’ve been to a Free Range party, you know this crew doesn’t miss the mark. Once again, they feature a diverse range of genres and artists throughout the weekend, with the initial announcement including killers like New Zealand’s Page Julia, Victoria’s Tom Baker, Adjani, ANADROME, DJ GOANNA, Discretion, Funcle, Konedawg, Viking... And that’s only the first round!

Earlybird tickets and car passes are now available, so plan for a weekend of great music, awesome people, and good vibes all around.

stage festival featuring the best selection of music, performances, art installations, markets, as well as native revegetation and lifestyle workshops.

If that piques your interest (and why wouldn’t it?) then you really don’t want to miss out!

And you can start by marking Saturday, 23 August in your calendars, because Dragon Dreaming are doing another warm-up party! The last one was epic, and this one promises to be just as impressive. Stay tuned to the Facebook event page for more details.

Coupla of new releases to talk about before I let you get back to whatever you were doing before you started reading this column.

Every time I sit down to write another column, there’s at least one new release from the deadset legends at Soliq Records. This time, we’re blessed with TWO!

The first is a four-track EP from Saint Esprit titled Sauvage. Across these four tracks, Saint Esprit weaves memories of his trip to India into truly hypnotic psytech that builds from minimalism to a brilliant crescendo. From sipping chai and watching clouds to forging a path through lush jungle and abandoning civilisation for a primal state, this EP is a story told through sound and BOY... does it click. It’s got an organic feel that only adds to the pulsing rhythms that carry each track.

Dragon Dreaming, the region’s perennial music and arts festival, is obviously happening again. The party’s been moved up a week and is now taking place from 26 - 29 September at Lake Burrinjuck in Wiradjuri Country.

The organisers are going above and beyond by collaborating with the local community and the Rural Fire Service to ensure the event is safe, inclusive, and beneficial to the locals, while still maintaining its underground spirit.

If, by some miracle of unfortunate happenstance, you’re hearing about Dragon for the first time: it’s a multi-

Mexican producer and head of AMW Black Label, Sanderjammes, released his debut EP, Teleport, on Soliq Records. Two tracks of footstomping psytech that feature dark and trippy soundscapes that will make you feel like you’ve teleported to a different dimension –perfectly represented by the insanely cool cover art, which invokes an H.R. Giger level of cosmic horror.

I’ll be listening to these pulsating tracks next time I’m out hiking in a forest, and I’ll let my mind do the rest.

That’s it from me this time. When next you read this column, we’ll be entering Spring, so you better believe there’ll be a lot more gigs to talk about.

Until then – stay safe, stay warm, give your animal friends a good cuddle, and make the world your dancefloor. Much love to all of you out there on Ngunnawal Country.

Step into the wild: Dragon Dreaming Festival returns to the lush shores of Burrinjuck Lake, Wee Jasper, NSW. This four-day, multi-stage celebration fuses cutting-edge underground music, immersive arts, hands-on workshops, and regenerative experiences in a breathtaking lakeside setting.

What began in 2008 as a forest doof in Cowan, ACT, has blossomed into a fully immersive, 4-day camping festival. Since 2014, the fest has made Lake Burrinjuck its “home”, supported with pride by the Wee Jasper Community.

The Year of Expansion & Connection

Four days of immersive festival: three stages, music, performance space, roving performances, visual art gallery, ceremony, healing spaces, workshops, lake swims & much more...

Land-connected art & regeneration: native revegetation, tree planting, and workshops rooted in sustainability and First Nations cultural respect.

Lakeside art installations & theatre: from large art installations, massive murals,

Dragon Dreaming - A lakeside paradise - Dance, Dream, take the Plunge

projection mapping, and cinema - the full sensory experience unfolds.

Markets: global cuisine, ethical fashion, hand-crafted jewellery, lifestyle crafts, coffee and charming market stalls.

Family-friendly focus: music, art and workshops for both children and adults.

Diversity: We are proud to be the winner of the 2025 Yass Valley Business Chamber Award for Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion.

Underground & United: Reaffirming its core DNA, Dragon Dreaming curates a diverse line-up of global underground sounds— spanning techno, psytrance, ambient, dub, drum & bass, broken beat, and more.

This year, the festival places a stronger emphasis on expanding live music performances, with jazz, reggae, hiphop, and soul joining the mix. Expect experimental surprises and unique collaborations throughout the weekend.

Co-Creation and Community Spirit

This not-for-profit celebration is powered by connection, creativity, and community - free from commercial advertising.

It’s a collective canvas for artists, educators, activists and dreamers, united in shared purpose.

You Need Festivals & They Need You!!

Outdoor music and cultural events are so crucial to our health & happiness. To dance, connect, and take time from the daily grind in nature and with other great people is an amazing opportunity we don’t want to lose or take for granted.

It has been a tough run for festivals over the past seven years, marked by a pandemic, draconian government policies, and the added costs related to compliance. Sadly, we have seen the demise of many underground and mainstream events alike.

Due to Dragon’s strong team of amazing humans that go above and beyond and the fantastic community of old and new dreamers who support the event, DDF has traversed this very rocky road, and the 2025 event is tracking well for another sellout event. Don’t let it slip away!

Save Your Place at the Water’s Edge

DD2024 sold-out, so secure your ticket soon - this lakeside dream fills fast. Passes, as well as glamping packages & bus transports from Canberra, Sydney & Melbourne, are now available on dragondreaming.com.au.

Tickets also available for the Dragon Dreaming Warm Up Party @ The Vault headlined by Doppel!
