BLYTH ACADEMY INTERNATIONAL SUMMERS | WELCOME

Welcome to Blyth Academy International Summers. Blyth Academy is a trusted educational organization offering study-abroad programs for high school students — more than 50,000 have experienced our international programs since 1977. Our courses follow the Ontario Curriculum and are delivered in an engaging, experiential format while maintaining academic rigour and integrity. We offer a safe, structured, and empathetic environment where young people thrive in destinations that offer boundless opportunities for the eager and curious. Our high school students are from public and private schools across Canada, the U.S., and beyond. They bring a wonderful mix of ethnic, religious and social backgrounds to both our programs, and one another. We teach our students to value many things, from independence, team building, and self-discipline to leadership and curiosity. Most of all, our students learn to thrive in a global environment that respects and celebrates diversity. Much of our students’ personal growth occurs outside the formal curriculum — field trips and excursions play a vital role in learning. Our staff are selected for their expertise, teaching abilities, and empathy. They are committed to experiential education in a way that brings learning to life. What’s more, their dedication to personalized education enables them to match each student’s learning style to the curriculum and their own expectations. Each year, we look for new and enriching international learning opportunities for our students. For 2020, we’re pleased to announce the addition of a new Grade 11 & 12 program: Greece. Students will be able to explore the ancient world, the sea, and picturesque islands. I hope you find the information in this brochure enlightening and exciting, and invite you to learn more about Blyth Academy International and all of our programs.

BLYTH ACADEMY INTERNATIONAL SUMMERS | OUR ACADEMICS

All Blyth Academy International Summers courses are credit courses. They are academically rigorous and recognized nationally and internationally. All credits can be applied toward a high school diploma at institutions across North America and abroad. Students and parents should ensure the course they select is appropriate for their course of study at high school and that the student has successfully completed the prerequisite for the course before July 2020. Blyth Academy International Summers hand-picks teachers from public and private schools the world over. Each teacher must display all the qualities that our students and parents have come to expect of Blyth Academy International Summers staff, including care, compassion, and an excellent teaching experience. In fact, some of our staff members have been recipients of the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and

the Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence. Our teachers are deeply committed to our students’ success. They are officially available during tutoring office hours and unofficially throughout our programs. Our teachers also observe and note each students’ progress on a daily basis, enabling them to provide a tailored approach to learning. Classes are held on-site at various museums, landmarks, parks or even on boats. Sometimes, in order to take advantage of Internet access, classes are held in hotel conference rooms. The average class size is 11 students, and the maximum is 20. Our small class sizes make every class a conversation rather than a lecture, and every seat a front-row seat. Once our students have successfully completed their course, we will send a report card to their home, and home school. FOR MORE INFORMATION: 1-866-960-3552 · 7

GRADES 11 & 12 | JULY & AUGUST | CENTRAL AMERICA

ITINERARY: JULY 1 - 24 OR JULY 26 - AUGUST 18, 2020 PLAYAS DEL COCO, 7 DAYS › MONTEVERDE, 3 DAYS › ARENAL, 2 DAYS › PLAYAS DEL COCO, 11 DAYS The North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica offers among the best and most easily accessible diving sites in the country, an abundance of marine life, and vast expanses of tropical dry forests that often line the darker sandy beaches that lend Playas del Coco its name. Playas del Coco seems like a sleepy seaside town at first glance, but once you’ve familiarized yourself, you’ll find that it’s a friendly and lively place where tourists easily mix with locals and other travellers from around the globe. At night, the central plaza fills with people, food, laughter and dancing in the true pura vida spirit. The beachside town and its private villas give students easy access to a variety of excursions, experiences, and natural wonders. Students will have the opportunity to hike inland trails, zipline above treetops, climb hanging bridges, relax in the mineral-rich hot springs, boat on the volcanic Lake Arenal, and swim along the idyllic coastline. Because Playas del Coco sits in a natural horseshoe-shaped bay, the waves here are easier to swim and snorkel in than other parts of the country, where the surf pounds the shore. For those who want to get closer to nature and learn about its inner workings, this area is an ideal spot to get an upclose look at an array of animals, including many species of seabirds and monkeys, and the hundreds of sea turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs each year. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve provides the opportunity to learn about cloud forest ecology and the thousands of species connected to it. Nighttime hikes offer the chance to uncover nocturnal animals not visible during the day. No visit to Costa Rica would be complete without a stop in Arenal Volcano National Park. Arenal is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At over a mile high, it is studied by seismologists to chart the profound changes in our climate and the environment. From micro to macro, Costa Rica is an exotic oasis that will enrich both knowledge and perspective. ITINERARY: JULY 3 - 26, 2020 TOKYO, 5 DAYS › HAKONE, 2 DAYS › KYOTO, 5 DAYS › HIROSHIMA, 3 DAYS › KAGOSHIMA, 3 DAYS › OSAKA, 4 DAYS The land of the rising sun is truly a fusion of the ancient and modern, with feudal castles and tranquil rural landscapes juxtaposed with thriving metropolises on the cutting edge of technology and fashion. Tokyo offers a seemingly unending choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, and dining. Kyoto, undoubtedly Japan’s cultural epicentre, gives visitors the chance to explore the impressive Pure Water Temple and Golden Pavilion by day. By night, the Gion district comes to life ablaze with lights, colours, and geisha. Kagoshima is a seaside town along Kinko Bay with spectacular views of the Sakurajima volcano. A boat ride to the volcanic island brings students to the observatory to get an up-close view of the active smoke spewing from the summit. A day at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Sengan-en Park and the Shoko Shuseikan stately home, reveal 350 years of history and a glimpse into the life of powerful ancient Japanese feudal lord, Shimazu Nariakira. In Osaka, Japan’s second-largest city, students can stroll the buzzing districts of Dōtonbori, where walls of neon signs flash over the canal, and take classes in Osaka Castle Park. ITINERARY: JUNE 27 - JULY 22, 2020 SIENA, 6 DAYS › FLORENCE, 4 DAYS › SARDINIA, 4 DAYS › ROME, 10 DAYS The land of art, philosophy, architecture, fabulous food, and fashion, Italy has the largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites on the planet and has often been described as one big living museum. Siena, Italy’s best-preserved medieval city, is home to one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in all of Europe, the Duomo di Siena. Its red brick buildings encircle the fan-shaped central piazza, where you’ll find the impressive Torre del Mangia. A visit to Siena in the summer would be incomplete without viewing the Palio, a heart-stopping horse race between competing civic wards held annually in the Piazza del Campo, the historic square in the city centre. To the Tuscan north is Florence, surrounded by vineyard-covered hills and valleys. In the birthplace of the Renaissance, visitors slowly stroll the banks of the Arno River, take in the vistas from Piazzale Michelangelo, and enjoy some delicious gelato. A day excursion to Venice lends the opportunity to stroll Piazza San Marco and the cobblestone alleyways, canals and bridges of this famous city. Hop on a ferry ride to Sardinia and relax on the island’s expansive beaches, which have sand so soft that local authorities have had to ban tourists from taking it with them! Enjoy the peace and take the opportunity to study and rest, or venture out on an optional excursion kayaking on Butterfly Beach. No program in Italy could possibly end without seeing the Eternal City of Rome. Explore the majesty of the Roman Empire at the celebrated Colosseum and the Forum, and visit Vatican City to view its museums and the glorious Sistine Chapel. Italy is also home to some of the best shopping on earth, so be sure to leave room in your suitcase for all the treasures you’ll acquire in this storied country. SPECIAL PROGRAM NOTE: Make sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! Many of the places we visit in Italy will be discovered by foot.
