The recreated 19th century village takes visitors back in time with reenactments, restored and replicated buildings. Visitors view living history in a restored log cabin, one-room school house, and other houses and churches of the Adventist pioneers who settled in the west end of Battle Creek over 150 years ago.

Dr. John Harvey Kellogg Discovery Center

Located in the Heart of Historic Adventist Village, The Dr. J. H. Kellogg Discovery Center offers a fun learning experience for all ages. Visitors learn about health treatments and practices of more than a century ago, while discovering the health principles that made the Battle Creek Sanitarium world famous. Once Dr. John Harvey Kellogg's Battle Creek Sanitarium (1903-1942), it became the Percy Jones Army Hospital (1942-1953). Today it houses elements of the Defense Logistics Agency. CACHE CALHOUN - Adventure is Out There After 3,200 finds, it's still exciting for Diane Batten of Lansing. “Geocaching is like a vacation,” she said.

Nearly every weekend she sets out for new discoveries and never ceases to be amazed by what she can find. It has become an integral part of all her travels.

With millions of fans searching for hidden caches, geocaching is a modern day treasure hunt that has made travel more fun – and meaningful – than ever.

A geocache, or cache, is a container hidden in plain sight with a log book inside. Geocaching is the sport of finding a cache using GPS coordinates and then sharing its location online at the official website, Geocaching.com.

Sometimes the exact coordinates are given, and other times, clues, riddles, and puzzles are a part of the discovery. GPS devices and apps for smart-phones can be used in finding a cache.

Cache Calhoun is a geocaching course with a three part challenge throughout Calhoun County; the brochure is available and lists all ten caches and explains the sport. The 2011 course was comprised of three series, or sets of challenges, each of which contained three to four caches a piece. Caches, in a variety of shapes, designs, and colors, were placed near attractions and landmarks, inviting geocachers to not only discover the cache, but to discover the county as well.

“The cache gets you there, then you open your eyes.” Diane explained. “You understand the value of the site. Why it's important to the place.

You get a little bit of a connection to the place.

Every cache in this series is unique and takes me to a place where I'm learning something new,” she said. “I love this series!”

“There's such a variety.” She recalled the trip, “I have not been to any of those locations ever, so it's all brand new. It makes me feel really happy to add them to my repertoire and share with other people.”

Throughout the world, caches are placed for everyone and for every skill level. From easy and fun to challenging and complicated, the sport welcomes all adventure-seeking enthusiasts.

“The level of difficulty of the Calhoun County Course is on the easy side, with a couple of caches a little more challenging,” she said.

“There are wonderful and impressive things to see, that I necessarily wouldn't know about except for having to look for those caches and locate those places. That's why I loved it.”

If you check out the 2011 course, you may see a “Dancing Bear,” or you may find “Truth.” Or, if you seek the 2012 course, you’ll find an all new set of clues, caches and fun! The Calhoun County Visitors Bureau designed the course to be an adventure for the entire family. It consists of three series, with total ten caches throughout the county. There is something for everyone. And each series completed wins you a prize.

Ever run straight into a festival? Come to the BATTLE CREEK CEREAL CITY CLASSIC, and you can enjoy two full days of festivity with your entire family.

The Classic, which takes place during the Cereal City Festival in June, offers a 10k run, as well as a Fun Walk. The Fun Walk starts after the race.

For people who are in the very early stage of getting fit, or have kids with them, the walk is a great approach.

The 3 runs and a non-competitive 5K walk take you through downtown Marshall, a National Historic Landmark District. For those who love to run for a good cause, BINDER PARK ZOO’S CHEETAH CHASE in June will reward you with the knowledge that you have helped to save the endangered cheetah.

Hero Rush in June takes place at the Calhoun County Fairgrounds. Compete in a challenging 5K-10K Race with creative obstacles that simulate the heroics of what firefighters do every day!

Ever run down a tarmac the C-21 Aircrafts taxi on every day? The annual ROAD HAWG CLASSIC, an inspiring fundraiser supporting local military families, is held at the Battle Creek Air National Guard Base in November. This unique event is a 5K/10K Run (5k walk) offering an experience and view that not many people get to see. The course is flat and wide open which is

always a plus! But don’t worry, everyone needs a challenge-so add a bridge with a hill for those die hard 10K runners!

Tony the Tiger gives you a high-five as you cross the line at the DIG ‘EM DASH 5K run/walk that starts and finishes in front of the Kellogg Company World headquarters in downtown Battle Creek. As part of Kellogg’s annual United Way campaign, all the proceeds from the event are donated to providing a better community.

The Miller College Alumni Association hosts the “5K PUMPKIN PRANCE” Run/Walk in Battle Creek. Participants and some odd fellows dressed as pumpkins start their “Prance” at McCamly Park in downtown Battle Creek. The race, followed by a “Howl-o-Ween Pet Parade” is a fun event for the entire family. Pet friendly vendors share their wares, and a silent auction is held with proceeds to benefit the Calhoun County Animal Shelter.
