When you open your home to a Starr foster child, you are making a lifelong difference.

Providing a solid support system is critical to a child’s development toward adulthood. As a foster parent, you might only be in their lives for a matter of months, but you can be sure that your work will have an impact that lasts generations.

Starr Foster Care has been around for nearly a century, and we are nationally recognized for our successful strength-based treatment models. We’ll provide the guidance you need to help change a child’s life, and once you sign up, you’re never alone. We view our foster families as professional partners and provide ongoing training and education that will help you grow right along with the children you’re serving.

Parents often raise their children the way their parents raised them. So when a foster parent or family shows love and compassion to a child who may otherwise not have experienced such warmth, it breaks a cycle and builds the community. You have the power to make a tremendous positive change that will reach well beyond your home and last a lifetime.

As you know, every child is unique, and some will need more help than others. Starr is the only foster care program in the area that provides continuous training to parents with children that have reactive issues, conduct disorders, or problems with substance abuse. We know that it’s as big a change for you as it is for them, and we do everything we can to help parents caring for children with special needs. If you want more of a peer perspective, Starr offers a mentoring program in which other foster families will work and talk with you to share experiences, offer advice, or just listen.

You won’t get rich by becoming a Starr foster parent. But you will add richness to your life, and the benefits are unbelievable. You’ll gain the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping a child in need, and there really is no better feeling. You’re giving them a chance to begin rebuilding faith in family, parents and grown-ups in general. It’s the fresh start that every underprivileged child deserves.

No matter what, we’re always straightforward with our parents about expectations. Our families know that the work is hard, but you’ll never be alone. The Starr process is well organized, and has been put to the test for thousands of families over several decades.

Our experienced staff know exactly what parents need, and give them the information and guidance to make their experience a successful one.

If you are in a position to help a child in need, remember that Starr has been providing guidance and assistance to area youth for nearly a century. We are looking for more adults to place our children with, as there is always a need. In fact, approximately a half million kids are placed in foster care every year. We have created partnerships with mental health services in many Michigan and Ohio counties to help develop the emotional and mental health of children in our care. We’ve got the help you need to help a child in need. All you have to do is find the strength to reach out and make a difference.

If you’d like to become part of the Starr family, the process takes about two to four months.

We perform a background check on all our foster parents and offer initial orientation, support and training to help identify and accentuate your strengths. We’ll take the time to make sure you’re as ready as possible to take on the most important role of your life.
