e grew up in a family of golfers. My dad learned the love of the sport of patience and skill from his parents; and later with his own family, he tried to pass his talent along to us. While my sister gave playing a shot in high VFKRRO P\ RQO\ FODLP WR JROÀQJ fame occurred on the putt-putt course that used to be in the Natchez Depot. Nonetheless, we Guidos know and love the game of golf. When we were growing up, springs and summers were spent at Belwood Country Club. While Dad played, we girls learned to swim in the club’s pool, enjoyed many a lunch in the clubhouse, and begged for rides in the carts. We were bona ÀGH FRXQWU\ FOXE NLGV 1RZ ZKHQ , look back on those days following Dad while he played in tournaments, , UHDOL]H WKDW WKRVH ZHUH WKH GD\V when we were taught manners and values. We knew how to keep quiet, how to dress appropriately, and how to enjoy days spent with family. Nowadays, Dad may enjoy the game of golf without his gallery of Guidos following behind; however, he still makes us proud for carrying on a family tradition that highlighted our summers, occupied youngsters after school, and taught us many life lessons that we hope to share with our own families one day. Thank you, Dad, for being our champion on and off the course. Hopefully, everyone can get out and enjoy these summer days along and beyond the Mississippi.

suppose that it should come as no surprise that landowners and oil-drilling crews are not on the best of terms, ever. Some of it is well deserved and some of it is just comical. A couple of instances that bear that out are hard to forget. Mississippi adheres to the Mississippi Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (hereinafter MRLTA). While other laws may apply, this Act deals primarily with the stated subject. This article will touch on renting from the tenant’s/lessee’s perspective. MRLTA was adopted to establish the rights, duties, and remedies under rental agreements signed after 1991, which today affects approximately 99.9% of all rental dwellings. Under MRLTA, neither a landlord nor a tenant may waive any provision of the Act especially if the lease is of a dwelling. To start with, most of the leases should be in writing although a lease for less than a year may be oral (not recommended). One of the interesting things in the Act is that neither the landlord nor the tenant may confess a judgment (meaning agree to a Page 24 { June 2015 { Bluffs & Bayous

Examples of nuisances may be loud appliances, alarms, blaring TVs, noisy dogs, parties, odors and fumes, burning rubbish, etc. A tenant engaged in any of these may be setting himself up for an eviction. Under 89-8-25, any of the above could be a violation of the statute’s requirement that tenants conduct themselves in a manner that does not disturb their neighbors’ peaceful enjoyment of their premises.
