Ugly Christmas sweaters have become all the rage at holiday parties in recent years. So The Viera Company marketing director Stephanie Byrd decided they should have a starring role in the 2016 Light Up Viera Parade, which gets underway from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov.

26, on Thanksgiving Day weekend following the Black Friday shopping holiday.

The problem? Such a thing does not exist that is big enough and bright enough to stand up to a parade. The solution? Byrd became an Ugly Sweater Parade Entry Designer.

“We looked everywhere to find really big ugly

sweaters for this parade and found nothing. To make a statement, they had to be larger-than-life and have decorative elements you can see in the dark. The wiggly Santa eyes on the Santa Lounge Sweater glow in the dark. My personal favorite is the holiday dogs, chickens and pigs sweater.”

Autism, Asperger's services coming to Viera

Help is on the way for families in the Viera/Suntree area whose children have autism and Asperger's syndrome. The Florida Autism Center (FAC) is moving into the former Seacoast Bank building at 5500 Murrell Road., Suite 100.

“We're so excited. Viera has been such a welcoming community, telling us they are so glad we are coming,” FAC marketing director Jenn Elston said.

FAC provides centerbased treatment based on the basic principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, and has a specific focus on early intensive behavioral intervention, verbal behavior (language) training and social skills training. In addition, FAC offers an alternative school program to children on the autism spectrum funded in part through the McKay Scholarship.

“We are excited and honored to offer our high quality clinical care to the Brevard County autism community and continue

to make progress toward expanding our services throughout Florida and the broader Southeastern United States,” FAC founder Chrystin Bullock said.

Families are invited to tour one of the growing number of FAC centers in nearby counties so their children may start at the center the day it opens.

“Our mission is to enable each child in our care to reach his or her personal potential and we look forward to having the opportunity to collaborate with the community and families to advance this commitment.”

Local families are eagerly anticipating the opening of the center, slated for winter 2016.

Viera swim teams repeat as district champs despite weather issues

Bad weather — including Hurricane Matthew — may have wreaked havoc with their schedule this season, but that hasn’t stopped the Viera High boys and girls swimming and diving teams from having success.

The girls won their fourth consecutive district title last month and the boys made it two in a row.

“We had a good time,” Viera senior captain Brennan Chace said. “We celebrated. We pushed the coaches in the water. We all were jumping in, splashing and having a good time. It was fun having the team do that and being around it all.”

Defending Class 3A state champion diver Sarah Rousseau won the district championship with the list of other individual winners including Delaney Naughton (500 freestyle), Abbey Ernst (100 backstroke) and Andie Wolfman (100 butterfly).

The girls 200 medley relay team of Ernst, Wolfman, Maria Torrez and Karly Keysor also won the district crown, as did the boys 200 medley relay team of Bryce Hattrup, Anthony Cerrato, Blake Wagner and JT Bartlett.

Although the girls 200 free relay just missed winning the district title, there was a celebration nonetheless as the team of Ernst, Jordan Fleisher, Keysor and Torrez broke the school record with a time of 1 minute, 45.9 seconds. It was record that had long been sought after.

“We were five-hundreths of a second away from it my freshman year and this is the first relay that’s gotten close to it (since) and we finally did it,” Torrez said.

“It was nice.”

The Hawks’ success was especially impressive given that they went into their district meet virtually blind to what the competition had to offer.

Once again, it's been a successful season for the Viera High boys and girls swimming teams, which each won the district championship last month. It was the fourth straight win for the Viera girls, while the boys won their second in a row.

Viera had four meets wiped out during the season because of bad weather.

That forced coaches Morgan Woodard, her mother Debbie Tweedie and the team’s assistants to hold early-morning workouts for swimmers to get in some individual pool time to stay sharp.

“They’ve been so flexible and so positive,” Woodard said. “We actually have 18 freshmen this year. It’s our biggest group. A lot of them are club swimmers, some of them are completely brand new, so we’ve got all levels.

“Our freshmen have been able to have really great leadership from our seniors.

Our seniors are our second-biggest group. It’s just been great leadership so the freshmen know what the team’s supposed to be like so they can continue SPECIAL

The districts were followed by the Cape Coast Conference meet, where Rousseau and Ryan Just both won their respective diving events with the swimming events to follow.

Next up was the regional meet on Oct. 28. Viera’s girls are the defending regional champions.

“I think we have the depth to do that again,” Woodard said. “I’m not really going in focusing on winning. I’m just trying to get best times and advance to states if we can. It was really a pleasant surprise last year when it happened. I was totally shocked.”

The Class 3A state meet is set for Nov. 4 at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart. VV

Frank Westwell is an unassuming member of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association, with the exception of his British accent.

He spent 30 years advising British governments, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and later John Major, on a variety of policy issues. Upon retirement , he was invited to become an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He was delighted to accept, taking his mother, sisters and wife to Buckingham Palace for the ceremony, where Queen Elizabeth bestowed the title in the Throne Room.

Westwell currently volunteers as a Guardian Ad Litum, representing neglected and abused children who are made dependents of the 18th Circuit Court. He finds his role advocating for the children as a satisfying and stimulating way to give back to some of Florida’s most needy young citizens.

The IRCC Busty Bunch teamed up with the Rockledge Fire Department in creative ways to raise more than $4,000 toward their total donated in the 2016 Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk Oct. 22 at Space Coast Stadium. Rockledge Firefighters Local 3138 presented a check for about $1,000.

Indian River Colony Club’s Team Busty Bunch and the Rockledge Fire Department each sold their own teamdesigned T-shirts for $15 a piece. The IRCC Busty Bunch has been participating with Making Strides walk for six years, with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.

The Busty Bunch, along with IRCC Golfers, Rally for the Cure, also participated in a bake sale held at the

IRCC club. Rally for the Cure passed their 20year milestone golfing to raise money for the Susan B. Komen Foundation.

Suntree school festival marks the end of an era

As families and their children are enjoying the annual Suntree Elementary Community Fall Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, it will also be a final chance for families and former students to say a last goodbye to principal Mecheall Giombetti, who retires after seven years at the helm in June.

“She is the only principal I have ever known in my whole time here,” said Emerson Casteel, for whom as a sixth grader this will also be his last year at the school.

Like Emerson, many students have younger siblings remaining at the school as well as older siblings who are Suntree alumni. Many grads return each year as festival volunteers.

Most of the money raised goes to the teachers in each classroom so that they may

enhance learning or cover the cost for field trips and other extras for students whose families cannot afford it. The remaining funds raised go toward enhancing technology equipment and software so that students maintain an edge in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics applications.

Suntree, with its rich surrounding tax base, families who both prize education and have the resources and

time to enhance it for their children, and who devote time at home and at school as volunteers to benefit others, would seem to make it a dream assignment for a principal.

“This has been a great experience, no question,” said Giombetti. who is retiring after 35 years in education as called for in the special DROP retirement path. But the eight years previous to Suntree spent at the poorest school

in the district — Endeavour Elementary in Cocoa — were also great, but in a different way.

“That was by far the most rewarding experience,” Giombetti said. That school attracted the most federal funds, but those resources were met with extreme low levels of income from families in the community immediately surrounding the school, with few volunteer hours and low capacity for parents to be involved in their children's education.

What's next for Giombetti, who is well below the age for traditional retirement? DROP requires she not work for the next year, which is fine with her as she figures out what's next.

“I'll leave it in God's hands, and I have faith that whatever comes next will be the next right thing for me.” VV For more information on the festival, call the school at 321-242-6480.

Many families in the Viera area use the school of choice on Merritt Island as a middle school and they stay through grade 12 or return to attend Viera High School.

“Our Edgewood families really stepped up to the plate to make sure we will be filling up a lot of local food pantries,” parent-leader Susan Taylor of northwest Viera said.

The project was organized by the Student Government Association, headed by Laura Robbins, one of 86 faculty and staff members at Edgewood.

“The students themselves made this effort a success by going above and beyond.

They are great leaders, not only in the school, but within their families and in the community,” Robbins said.

Viera High student wins Habitat for Humanity art contest

Winning the Habitat for Humanity art contest turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise for Viera High senior Samantha Dodge.

“Yeah, it was (nice to win), especially since I wasn’t really expecting to win,” Dodge said.

“I was doing it as a fun thing.”

Dodge was one of 150 Viera students from Dr. Susan West’s 2D, 3D, Drawing 1 and Drawing 2 classes to take part in the competition, which was part of the celebration of World Habitat Day on Oct. 3.

The Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County invited Brevard County Schools to take part by designing 7x7-inch quilt squares that represented Habitat and came with the theme of “Everyone Deserves a Decent Place to Live.”

One winner was declared in each of the elementary, middle and high school divisions.

Victoria Dubois of Central Middle School won in her division, while Suntree Elementary sixth-grader Kadie Zulon was also a winner.

West said the competition gave her a chance to jump start working with her art students on some of the intricacies of working with Microsoft software.

“Usually, in February, I teach my students how to use the drawing tools in Microsoft Word, but I was able to get a computer lab and I thought this was a perfect opportunity,” West said.

“They could use the text.

It’s really easy to do that.

And I could teach them the processes and techniques. We went to the computer lab for three days and they learned how to use that technology.

And then they had purpose.

“For most of them, it related to them because they know

homelessness is important and they’ve heard of Habitat for Humanity. They did a really good job on it. They were very creative.”

Dodge, who said she is already certified in both Microsoft and graphic design, worked on her project for several days.

What she came up with was a very impressive design that

“Her composition skills were really interesting because she contrasted the bright, warm colors against the darker, cool colors. She’s using the globe to really show that habitats are necessary around the world.

And the way she did her fonts, with the glowing edges and shadows, it gives it a

sense of depth. “… The tree kind of symbolizes life and the people who are habituating the homes. That was one of the criteria, that your subject matter had to match the theme.”

Dodge, who moved to Brevard from Orlando prior to her senior year, said that while she enjoys art, she has previously taken some IT classes and is planning on studying Cyber Security when she gets to college. VV

Holiday Manatee celebrates 'Halfway to Earth Day’

For a Green School like Manatee Elementary, Earth Day celebration is serious business. Unfortunately, Earth Day is April 22, which falls right in the middle of FCAT/FSA testing, leaving little room for celebrations.

Manatee, a 2015 U.S. Dept. of Education Green Ribbon School, got creative and started Halfway to Earth Day, a day in October, halfway to April, used to observe Earth Day and bring about all things that make the planet special, things that contribute to life and the well-being of all.

Manatee invited local organizations to join in and add variety to the activities encompassing the celebration to expose students to an array of

For the whole school day on Oct. 19, Brevard County Solid Waste Management Dept., Hubbs Seaworld, Brevard Zoo and Judi’s Butterflies were at Manatee’s pavilion presenting, teaching and interacting with all students.

Improved economy puts red light on new Wickham Road traffic signal

Residents of Eagle's Landing and Forest Lake in Suntree may have to wait longer for the installation of a traffic light at the entrance to their subdivisions at N. Wickham Road, near Advent Lutheran Church on the north side of Wickham and the Publix shopping plaza to the southwest.

A request by area residents resulted in Brevard County commission approval of the light in July 2014, and design approval in March 2015. Bids were due by Sept. 23, but neither of two submissions were accepted by the Brevard County traffic planning department.

“This is maddening when you consider there have been two dozen crashes resulting in at least four deaths just in the past few years,” said Charlotte Lux, president of the Eagle's Landing Homeowners Association, a sub-association of the

Suntree Master Homeowners Association. “This light should have been put in years ago.”

One bid was not compliant with requirements and the other was more than double the projected costs.

“It was bid but the amount of the bid was far above the engineer's estimate and the budget for the project,” director of Brevard County Brevard County Public Works John Denninghoff said. The cost for the light was estimated by county engineering at $550,000 in August.

“We are considering our options. Needless to say, we have had a few other priorities in recent days,” he added, referring to repairs to traffic infrastructure resulting from Hurricane Matthew in early October.

One typical post-hurricane repair to traffic infrastructure won't be a factor in the new intersection: a downed light that blocks traffic and poses an electrocution hazard.

There will be no suspended light box at the new intersection, but rather signal light panels will be fixed to long mast-arms over the road that angle out from a pole installed in the ground. Similar new lights are being installed along North Wickham Road in Viera at the intersection of Interstate 95 and along Lake Andrew Drive and Stadium Parkway.

Should a bid have been accepted, the contractor would have had 245 days to complete the project, with a completion date of July 2017.

The reason for the length of the construction time and the expense is twofold, according to Pat Woodard, community relations director for Brevard Country District 4 Commissioner Curt Smith.

“These hurricane-proof arms are in high demand and there are only two companies that make them,” Woodard said. The intersection will require four arms, one over Forest Lake Drive, one over Golden Eagle Court, and one each over the west- and eastbound lanes of Wickham.

The other hurdle for this

intersection is this project requires extensive utility coordination to ensure there are no conflicts with the proposed mast-arm locations, Woodard added.

The delays due to design requirements may have resulted in the reason for the latest delay: an improved economy, Public Works Traffic Operations program manager Corrina Gumm said.

“Of the two bids received, one was not FDOT prequalified, which is required

by Brevard County. The other bid was exceedingly high compared to the allocated budget and the engineer’s cost estimate (more than double). Unfortunately, the market conditions have changed significantly in the last year, which has resulted in the outrageous bid received and limited contractors willing to bid on it,” Gumm added. “I realize this is a high priority item.

It is our intent to rebid this project as soon as possible.”

December is a month to remember for Wickham Road traffic improvements December is expected to be a milestone event for Viera/Suntree area traffic control. It is the projected month that traffic will for the first time be able to drive under Interstate 95 in the three lanes planned for east-bound traffic, under the southernmost bridge over Wickham Road that has sat vacant for half a decade in anticipation of the widening of Wickham Road.

The Viera Company, the Florida Department of Transportation and Brevard County worked together to expand the bridge years ago when I-95 was widened.

The banner day will be less pronounced due to the staggered initial use of the widened Wickham Road, according to Brevard County Commission District 4 spokesperson Pat Woodard.

“East- and west-bound traffic will be directed to the new side of Wickham Road while the existing road is resurfaced and then full opened,” Woodard said.

The project currently under construction entails the widening of the Wickham Road approach to I-95 from four lanes to six lanes, from the traffic circle at Lake Andrew Drive to Murrell Road. Additional improvements include an additional lane for ingress/egress of traffic to the expanding Space

Also expected to improve traffic flow on Wickham Road in mid2017 is the four-laning of Viera Boulevard to U.S. 1 to the north, including a traffic light at the Holiday Springs Road intersection that is at the recently built home of Satcom headquarters. Wickham Road traffic heads north along North Pinehurst Drive to Holiday Springs.

It is anticipated that more traffic will use this route to U.S. 1. Future relief to Wickham Road will come in the form of an interchange at Viera Boulevard, see page 20.

The master plan for the area entails an eventual I-95 flyover at Spyglass Hill Road that lines up with what is currently named Napolo Road, which extends to Lake Andrew Drive. VV

The I-95 underpass at Wickham Road is expected to open in the eastbound direction for the first time in December. Traffic will first be rerouted from the existing Wickham Road while it is repaired. Then, all six lanes of traffic will be open in both directions.

Run Run Santa One Mile a new holiday tradition

It’s going to be quite a sight: 500 runners streaming through Viera in Santa outfits competing in the first ever Run Run Santa One Mile.

The unique short event (most races start at 5K) will begin at 7:30 a.m. Christmas Eve Dec. 24. All participants must wear supplied shortsleeved Santa outfits, including shorts, hat, beard and belt.

The race starts on Stadium Parkway at the corner of Veteran's Way and runs south, turning right onto Judge Fran Jamieson Way and right on Breslay Drive to the finish line.

Race director Brittany Streufert got the idea after competing in a similar but longer race in Vermont.

“I participated in a 5K and couldn’t believe how much fun it was. What’s great is that Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday this year so that really ties it to the whole Santa Claus/Christmas theme of the race,’’ she said.

“It’s not a long distance so you can do the Santa Run, get your finisher medal and go last-minute Christmas shopping,’’ he said.

Elite runners can compete in an invitational mile. Male runners must have a sub18 minute 5k and female runners must have a sub 20-minute 5K or equivalent to be considered.

“They will start two minutes before the rest of the field so they can go all out and go as fast as they can,’’ she said.

Santa suits are included

in the $30 registration fee.

Proceeds from the event go to the teen mission at Calvary Chapel.

The sponsors are Viera Pizza and Mike Acosta, who had worked with Streufert for five years with the Eat My Crust 5K, which hit 1,000 participants this year.

Viera High School students have spoken, and Donald Trump is their choice by a wide margin.

The Republican candidate was the winner of a mock presidential and U.S. Senate election Wednesday, Sept. 29 at the school’s media center.

Trump got 932 votes, or 51.12 percent of the 1,823 votes cast.

Democrat Hillary Clinton, who is locked in a tight contest nationally with Trump, won 467 votes, or 25.62 percent.

Remaining votes went to Libertarian Gary Johnson (183 votes, 10.04 percent), Reform candidate Roque De La Fuente (96 votes, 5.27 percent), Green candidate Jill

Stein (90 votes, 4.94 percent) and Constitution candidate Darrell Castle (55 votes, 3.02 percent).

In the U.S. Senate race, students preferred Republican Marco Rubio over Democrat Patrick Murphy by a 74 percent to 21 percent margin.

Students in Social Studies classes cast votes throughout the day, said Jeffrey Draves, Viera High’s department chairman for Social Studies.

Students signed in based on their grade level, then student volunteers led them to computers to cast their votes.

Students not enrolled in Social Studies could vote before school or during lunch, Draves said.

“We are trying to simulate

the voting experience as much as possible,” Draves said.

Viera High was one of the first schools in Florida to take part in the program, which tabulates student votes on an app called VoteUSA, Draves said. Students across the country, ranging in age from preschool to 12th grade, can vote through Election Day, Nov. 8, he added.

Junior Lucas Gregorio enjoyed the experience. “It does make it feel a little more important,” said Gregorio, who at 17 is too young to vote this November. “It does make you feel like you have a voice, because in real elections I’m not quite comfortable with the Electoral College. But this feels more personal.” VV

Residents learn more about Diverging Diamond Interchange project at open house

After attending an informational open house about a planned “Diverging Diamond Interchange” at Viera Boulevard and Interstate 95, Audrey ChowJones of Viera walked away with a more positive view of the project.

“I feel a little better about it, but it was really confusing,” ChowJones said after she and dozens of others talked to Florida Department of Transportation officials and engineers during the twohour event Oct. 13 at Viera Regional Park Community Center.

Chow-Jones lives in the Sonoma community and takes Viera Boulevard to and from her job at One Senior Place. So she was concerned after learning that the intersection’s current design will be replaced with a pattern that lets east-west vehicles from the right side of Viera Boulevard cross over at a traffic light to the left side. Once past the

intersection, the lanes shift back to the right side of the road at a second traffic light.

Work on the $14 million project is slated to begin in fall 2017 and take about 14 to 16 months to complete, according to the FDOT. The design, a new concept for Florida, makes for easier left turns onto the interstate, said Mark Owen, a senior transportation engineer with Orlando consulting, engineering and architectural firm TranSystems and a project manager and consultant for the Viera job.

“The two things that studies have shown about diverging diamonds is that they do operate very efficiently, and the second thing is that they’re operating very safely,” Owen said.

In 2014, about 300 residents attended a FDOT public hearing in Viera to complain about the proposed interchange. About two dozen spoke out against the plan, citing concerns about increased traffic, accidents and noise.

Owen said few people expressed opposition to the project during the open house. “They all understand the need for it,” he said.

“I think they got a little apprehension to it because it’s a new interchange configuration, and I certainly understand that. They’re just wanting to understand how it’s going to function and more assurances that it’s going to be OK.” An FDOT project development and environment study also evaluated future upgrades to Viera Boulevard, including widening the boulevard from two lanes to four lanes west of Tavistock Drive to west of Porada Drive and from east of Herons’ Landing to U.S. 1.

The interchange, a joint project between the state and The Viera Co., is meant to ease traffic congestion at the Fiske Boulevard and I-95 interchange to the north and the Wickham Road interchange to the south, FDOT planners say.

The interchange will be the second built in Florida.

Some 69 Diverging Diamond Interchanges are either planned or under

construction across the U.S. The first was built in Springfield, Mo. in 2009.

Chow-Jones said driving in the left lane while crossing over I-95 will feel unusual.

Paul LaMontagne celebrates the unique wood grains and shapes in burled ebony, maple and redwood, high-end sculptures in his Merritt Island studio using hand-held power tools.

The resulting abstract creations ($165 to $5,000) will be for sale along with the work of many other talented artists at the 20th annual ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday Nov. 19 and 20 along Highland Avenue in the Eau Gallie Arts District in Melbourne.

Having toured the country with his sculptures, these days LaMontagne generally doesn’t travel more than three hours from home, doing shows in Melbourne, Winter Park and Cocoa Beach among others. He makes sure to include ArtWorks in his schedule.

“ArtWorks is a good solid show. People are real nice and it’s easy to do. Last year, I sold a big one there and a bunch of smaller ones.

Eau Gallie is a good venue to have an art show.

They get a lot of people to come out,’’ he said.

ArtWorks is unique in terms of demonstrations by the artists sometimes referred to by the French phrase “plein air” which means “in the open air.” Organizers encourage the artists to create new works of art in their booths as a way of engaging visitors in a real time activity.

“I will be working on one of my pieces as a demonstration,’’ LaMontagne said.

And there’s an opportunity to see the creations of talented high school artists, free art activities for kids of all ages, food vendors and live entertainment.

Artists will vie for $25,000 in cash awards and ribbons, including the $3,500 Link Johnsten Best of Show Award and the Demonstrators' Awards. There are also sponsor purchase awards.

ArtWorks was founded by Johnsten in 1996.

Palmer's appearances still remembered at Suntree CC

Steve Lamontagne, general manager of Suntree Country Club and a former PGA Tour player, smiled broadly as he remembered the days when golfing great Arnold Palmer and his legions of fans known as “Arnie’s Army” swarmed the club’s Classic Course back in the 1980s.

The legendary Palmer, who died Sept. 25 in Pittsburgh at age 87 while awaiting heart surgery, was instrumental in establishing the Senior PGA Tour — known today as the Champions Tour — and making Suntree one of its original tour stops, Lamontagne said. From 1980 to 1990, golf’s best players ages 50 and older teed off at Suntree, and Palmer, the superstar nicknamed “The King” and who popularized golf in the 1950s and 1960s, was often there to compete for the championship.

As a high school student, Lamontagne was a caddie for 1954 U.S. Open champion Ed Furgol at the 1983 Suntree Classic when he saw Palmer and his fans approach.

“The crowds were incredible,” he said. “The crowds were all Arnold Palmer crowds. It didn’t matter how he was playing, whether he was near the lead or not. He would have the biggest galleries by far. It was my first experience seeing other people follow such a figurehead of the game.

he certainly is everybody’s hero. He’s so popular.’ And you get popular by winning tournaments, but then it’s also your character and everything else.

“It was great to have him here. He would land his helicopter out here and come out and play.”

Palmer, who won 62 titles on the PGA Tour including four Masters, two British Opens and one U.S. Open, never won the Suntree Classic. But in the early 1980s, the Pennsylvania native who wintered in Orlando designed Suntree Country Club’s

6,945-yard, par 72 Challenge Course, the club's second course, Lamontagne said.

“It’s a wonderful golf course,” said Lamontagne, a Suntree resident who competed in 124 PGA Tour events between 1989 and 2012. “It’s beautiful with large lakes.”

Palmer was golf’s first TV-age icon, a telegenic player with an aggressive style, whose rivalries with fellow golfers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player attracted millions to the sport.

But despite being one of the most recognizable athletes of the 20th century, Palmer remained personable, approachable and

friendly, Lamontagne said. “He certainly cared about everybody who came out to watch him and he really understood the fact that the game was not about him; it was about the game of golf,” he said.

In 2009, Lamontagne qualified to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando.

The tournament helps support Arnie's Army Charitable Foundation, which includes the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, which is named after Palmer's wife who died in 1999. There, Lamontagne and his children shared a few memorable moments with Palmer.

“I went up to him before the tournament, shook his hand and spent 30 to 40 seconds with him,” Lamontagne said. “It was a great experience. He couldn’t have been any nicer to me. I was so glad to have that little moment with him. My kids to this day say they remember they got Arnold Palmer to sign their hats.”

Lamontagne was at home watching ESPN when he learned of Palmer’s death.

“I had concerns watching him at the Masters this year,” Lamontagne said. “He just didn’t look right.

"It’s obviously sad, but his life was a celebration at 87. He was a huge pioneer of the game. I looked up to him.” V V

Suntree/Viera will lose its beloved Tiller fire engine

It's been a love affair in the Suntree/Viera area. A nearly new fire engine out of Brevard County FireRescue Station 80 in Suntree has been slashed from the operations budget and must be sold in a literal fire sale, the four-person crew also cut, reducing staff from nine members per shift to five in one of the busiest areas of the county.

BCFR paid nearly $1 million for the specially designed unit in 2013, the Tiller spending months in gestation in a Pierce fire engine factory in the Midwest. It is projected to fetch just $500,000 at auction.

It features a 100-foot ladder and the ability to be steered from the front or from a glassencased cabin at the rear.

“It is great. The firefighters love it. It can fit into small spaces because the rear wheels can be directed by the rear driver, so it never has to make a three-point turn to get out of an enclosed space, and it has so many specific uses intentionally built into the design. It will be sorely missed,” said Richard Pierce, speaking in his capacity as president of Brevard County Professional Firefighters Local 2969, not as a firefighter on the Station 80 team. The Tiller sits at the station unstaffed and unused until Brevard County Commission confirms its fate.

The loss of the Tiller is a concern in the greater Suntree/Viera area as well,

whether wending down the sole narrow road to South Merritt Island, or frequenting crashes along Florida's most dangerous stretch of Interstate 95 with its Swiss Army knife of applications.

“This is a shame. A huge loss,” said Palm Shores mayor Carol McCormack, who plans to bring the matter before the Brevard County Commission.

“Homeowners should be aware that while the county is trying to save pennies, they may personally have to pay a huge increase in their homeowners insurance.

People in the Suntree/Viera area should be up in arms.”

McCormack is referring to Brevard County's rating by the independent Insurance Services Office (ISO), Inc., which works on behalf of insurance companies and citizens. BCFR, which serves unincorporated areas such as Viera and Suntree, underwent an audit in 2015 that takes place every five years for all fire departments.

A greater number of trucks with ladders taller than 75 feet and close proximity of fire stations and hydrants improves an ISO rating and lowers insurance rates. The next audit will come in 2020.

The Tiller will only be in greater demand, McCormack continued, as the number of buildings in the area five stories and taller continues to grow. A seven-story, twintower senior living facility and 120-bed assisted-living facility under construction on Wickham Road near Station

80 is expected to create a noticeably increased daily demand on services, and a new five-story officeplex on U.S. 1 will open soon.

While the Tiller issue is an emotional one, the elimination of it is a practical one, according to BCFR Chief Mark Schollmeyer.

“The Tiller was designed at a time when we thought the new communities across from The Avenue Viera would have such small streets that we would need the nimbleness of the Tiller, but it did not turn out to be the case,” Schollmeyer said, adding that the water-storage capacity of the Tiller is limited and that the ladder is a “stick,” versus a bucket that can hold responders and victims. “We moved a bucket ladder truck over from Satellite Beach to Station 48 in Viera, so we feel confident the need is met.”

The 15,000-square-foot custom luxury office facility at 5815 S. U.S. 1 in Rockledge is the new home of Ellingson Properties, Echelon Builders and Morgan Financial, a mortgage lending firm, said Greg Ellingson, owner/ broker of Ellingson Properties and Echelon Builders. More businesses will be added in the coming months, Ellingson said.

“We are serving clients already,” Ellingson said.

“We’re getting settled in our building and everyone’s excited.”

Ellingson and Echelon moved into the new building in August and Morgan Financial followed in September. A grand opening ceremony was set for this month, but Hurricane Matthew disrupted those plans, Ellingson said.

“We’re going to wait until post-Christmas,” he said.

Ellingson Properties occupies about 5,000 square feet of the complex, while Morgan and Echelon take up another 4,750 square feet and 3,000 square feet, respectively.

Another 1,000 square feet is for office space for new Ellingson agents, and 2,000 square feet is reserved for complementary, real estaterelated businesses, Ellingson said.

“We’ll have partners like

The goal is to create a onestop real estate center that mirrors Ellingson Properties’ level of commitment to service to its clients, Ellingson said.

“We’re putting all these things in place so we all benefit from the location, the foot traffic and the acknowledgement of a one-stop shop,” he said.

Response to the state-ofthe-art facility has been great, Ellingson said. “Some 36

different people have stopped in here and said, ‘Hey, I’m repainting my house, I’m building a new house, and I really like your paint color or that color of the rock,’” he said of the center, which was designed and constructed by Echelon Builders. “They want to know what the color of that awning is, the material, etc.”

From the pollution we generate, to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s attempt to raise the level of chemicals allowed in water, to a fertilizer plant leaking radioactive waste water into Florida’s aquifer, our supply of clean water is threatened and needs to be preserved.

Water is a fundamental component of life. Water is Life is not only the name of an organization that provides clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education programs (waterislife.com); it is also a statement of what water represents to us.

Water is a vital substance for all living organisms, animal and plants alike. It is used to regulate internal temperature, transport nutrients, and flush out wastes, and represents up to 90 percent of their structure.

The human body, for example, is about 70 percent water. Our major organs are mostly water: “the brain and heart are composed of 73 percent water, and the lungs are about 83 percent water.

The skin contains 64 percent water, muscles and kidneys are 79 percent, and even the bones are watery: 31 percent.” (USGS) We depend on water for our survival and, even though one may think we have plenty of water on the

planet, 97 percent of that water is in the oceans and the water we need — fresh water — only makes up 0.3 percent of the total water on the planet.

From that 0.3 percent, not all can be used, because it is unattainable or because it is polluted.

According to WATERisLIFE, 663 million people lack access to safe water, 3.4 million people die each year from water-related diseases, and one in five children younger than 5 years old die each day from waterborne disease.

Pollution is a big threat to our water supply and to the lives of all creatures that depend on water to survive.

We have experienced that first hand in our Indian River Lagoon, where the combination of nutrients from septic systems, fertilizers, reclaimed water irrigation and stormwater runoff, among other things, has affected the health of the lagoon and brought death to our waters, culminating with the massive fish kill we saw back in March 2016.

Our waters are in danger and need our help.

WATERisLIFE created “The Drinkable Book,” a special book that not only educates about water safety and hygiene, but also serves as a filter that kills 99 percent of deadly bacteria. The pages of the book work like a scientific coffee filter that provides 30 days of clean drinking water.

A whole book can get up to four years of drinkable water.

Donations and volunteers support this project.

Tha Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department presented the Save Our Lagoon Project Plan, a comprehensive plan to reduce and remove water pollutants, and restore and manage the lagoon. The plan outlines the tasks involved and lists costs associated with each task. In order to fund this project, the Brevard County Board of Commissioners opted for a half-cent sales tax. That option will be on the ballot in the Tuesday, Nov. 8 election and it will be up to us to approve it.

Spinning tales about turkeys Wild turkeys are native to North America. In the 20th century, through trap and transfer and other restoration efforts, the declining population rebounded.

Preferred habitats include open forests perhaps with nut trees, plus edges and fields.

Florida offers palmettos and swamps. Turkeys also frequent roadsides. Nightly, flocks roost and sleep in trees for safety — they are highly social.

Florida hosts two of six subspecies. The Osceola or Florida wild turkey lives on the peninsula. It interbreeds with the panhandle’s eastern wild turkey, which is prolific in the eastern half of the United States.

Feathers are dark overall with glimmering colors. Hens are duller and smaller. Toms (males) may reach 25 pounds.

Toms are polygamous and mate with many hens. Courting is singular or in groups. Male mating displays involve strutting while puffing the feathers (numbering 5,000 to 6,000), fanning the tail, and dragging the wings. Vocalizations with gobbling, drumming and spitting abound. Plus, head and neck skin varies from brilliant red, blue and white depending on mood intensity. Soon, hens nest in shallow dirt depressions, enveloped by woody vegetation — protection for poults (chicks).

Many predators, such as coyotes and owls, threaten. Toms may defend by ramming their bodies and employing beaks and spurs. Turkeys have small brains but are extremely intuitive and often avoid hunters. Pinpoint eyesight helps.

Although they are primarily walkers, they may run at 25 mph and fly (low) at 55 mph. Flight can span a mile.

creatures, forage may include grass, nuts, berries, insects, and snails. Wild turkey meat is delectable and mostly dark.

Nourishment from grass and grain produces milder meat compared to diets of insects.

Actually, turkeys were domesticated in Mexico and the southwestern United States long before Columbus arrived.

The Spanish then introduced turkeys to Europe. The English purchased turkeys and similar guinea fowls from Turkish merchants — subsequently, the name “turkey.” Colonists settling in the New World unnecessarily brought along turkeys. Actually, the pilgrims discovered the eastern wild turkey was already food for the Indians.

Today, domesticated turkeys (same species as wild) are bred indoors, sometimes in converted aircraft hangars with a flock numbering tens of thousands.

Injuries, heat stress and blindness from lighting manipulations are common.

A female flock could fatally “henpeck” a misplaced solitary male. Breeding produces heavier, broad-breasted birds. White feathers can also be produced to avoid unsightly pin feathers on dressed meat. Size inhibits flying and running. Sadly, releasing these turkeys might contaminate the wild gene pool.

Actually, domestic turkeys provide more than meat.

Feathers are ground for protein animal feed. Litter provides fertilizer and fuel in electric power plants.

Moreover, turkeys are considered therapy pets.

Recently, a turkey was pushed in a wheelchair, boarded on a plane and placed in a seat, free of charge. The accompanying owner provided documentation from a mental health professional.

According to Benjamin Franklin, the turkey is more respectable and a “Bird of Courage” when comparing it to the bald eagle, our national bird. I would agree that turkeys are courageous, especially on Thanksgiving Eve! VV
