Bands vie for top honors at Light Up Viera Parade

Hang on to your Santa Hats. The Nov. 28 Light Up Viera Parade for 2015 promises to make the Saturday after Thanksgiving a musically rousing good time featuring real-time crowd voting for top honors among five decorated high school marching bands.

Add to that, professionally-created floats and costumes, decorated golf carts and after-parade fireworks in Space Coast Stadium and you can plan on a holiday event to remember. The parade starts at 6 p.m. and culminates with fireworks at 8 p.m.

“We are really going all out this year,” said Lexie Doyle, event and marketing

specialist for The Viera Company, host of the event, sponsored by Health First, Evolve, iHeart Radio and Space Coast Stadium.

“We’re adding more spectacle to it, in a good way. There are going to be lit props and lit costumes, less of a passive smile-and-wave sort of parade and more interactive,’’ Doyle said. “That’s just our way of giving back to the community by getting everybody together and kicking off the holidays. We anticipate about 5,000 spectators.”

An exciting new addition for 2015 is a battle of high school marching bands, including Viera, Rockledge, Astronaut, Satellite and Heritage.

The Viera Company donated $1,500 to each participating school’s music program to cover the band’s costs, including

transportation, dry cleaning and other needs. Each band will perform throughout the parade and will also have a 1-minute, stopped performance in front of the judge’s table and grandstands located at Manatee Elementary.

Parade-goers are asked to download the iHeartMedia Light Up on their phones and mobile devices to help vote for the best band in real time.

“We want them to vote immediately so that we can have a winner by the end of the night,” Doyle said.

The winner is chosen based on the following holiday-themed criteria: • Hark! The Herald Angels Judge: (25%) Audience vote.

• Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: (25%) Percentage of band/instruments lit up and creative use of lights.

• Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree: (25%) Holiday-themed costuming, showmanship, band choreography, engagement and color guard choreography (if featured).

• Carol of the Bells: (25%) Music selection, musicality, creativity of musical program, balance and blend, style and interpretation.

The winning band will receive an additional $1,500 for its music program, a traveling trophy (to be presented to the winner each year) and bragging rights for the year. Santa will announce the winner and award the trophy.

Space Coast Stadium will be open for parade-goers at 6:30 p.m.

The stadium will have holiday-themed arts and crafts, food trucks, kickball on the field, and other mascot meet and greets, live music and table vendors for people to enjoy after the parade.

Veterans honors, new homes set IRCC aglow

When the Indian River Colony Club appears at the Boomer Bash & Senior Expo for the 2:30 p.m. Veterans Salute, they will have already saluted veterans among the Greatest Generation.

The Viera golf course community designed for U.S. military officers but now open to others donated funds to send three World War II veterans on their Honor Flight. The nonprofit sends WWII and now Korean War veterans to visit their battle memorials in Washington, D.C. IRCC awarded the $1,200 at the Aug. 14 “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive” event to celebrate the victorious end of World War II. Like the Boomer Bash, it was a Senior Life event.

“It was such a pleasure knowing that the resources committed by IRCC are honoring World War II veterans in such a unique, effective way,” IRCC COO and general manager John K. Robinson said.

It used to be that when Dolores Spearman of south Rockledge considered giving to a charity, she looked for one that proudly spent only pennies on administrative overhead.

No more.

“We come from corporate success. We know how to run major businesses. That’s why we have financial gifts to give back,” Spearman said of herself and her benevolent peers, many of whom also live in the greater Viera/ Suntree area.

“But we check our business sense at the door when we take a volunteer board position or look to make a gift to charity. We would never run a company that way.

Nonprofit success is based on good administration, which is where we need to invest our monies.”

Spearman shared those insights as one of nearly 200 attendees of the Sept. 29 and 30 Major Gifts RampUp Conference held at the Melbourne campus of Eastern Florida State College, sponsored by United Way of Brevard.

She was inspired by firebrand fundraiser and presenter Jimmy LaRose of the 25-year-old National Development Institute, who challenged the community’s donors, charities and civic leaders to rethink the way they pursue money.

Saad is active with local service clubs in the Suntree/ Viera area, volunteering and fundraising to help children in need. He also does outreach work through his St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church in Suntree.

Ryan Moore Golf Tournament will benefit Harmony Farms

The Ryan Moore Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Harmony Farms will kick off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Duran Golf Club in Viera. Nonprofit Harmony Farms has been connecting Brevard residents who have disabilities with horses for more than 20 years.

The annual golf tournament was set up in honor of Ryan Moore, a boy who loved a therapy pony named Star. Ryan died at the age of 5 and his parents wanted to give back to the organization that brought their son so much happiness.

In addition to giving to a great cause, entrants have a shot at some pretty big prizes. Anyone who lands a hole-in-one will win a free golf cart, courtesy of GolfCarts Unlimited, and a one-year membership to Duran Golf Club. There will also be items up for raffle. The entry fee is $79 per player, and it includes greens fees, golf cart rental, driving range access, lunch and beverages.

“It’s a celebration that memorializes Ryan, as well as supporting Harmony Farm’s valuable and unique therapy program. We are a nonprofit program that survives entirely on the support of its sponsors and fundraising events such as this,” said Lovise Miller of Harmony Farms.

Viera High swim teams hope for big postseason run

The Viera High boys and girls swimming teams are already having a strong season … and it could get even better.

“In the past two years, we’ve had a little over 20 people qualify from districts to regionals, and I think we’ll have more this year,” coach Morgan Woodard said.

The district tournament was held Oct. 28 at North County Aquatic Center in Sebastian, with the regionals taking place Nov. 4 and 5 at the Rowdy Gaines Pool in Winter Haven.

Viera’s postseason got off to a good start earlier in the month when sophomore divers Sarah Rousseau and Ryan Just both won the Cape Coast Conference championship. Rousseau set a school record in that meet with 466.5 points. Dylan Parris, another sophomore, finished third.

Peter Haddad also had a big day, winning the 100 backstroke (58.69) and finishing second in the 100 freestyle (60.67).

Overall, the girls finished second in the CCC, while the boys were fourth.

girls were going for a third consecutive championship, which would be a perfect way to cap a season in which they defeated Cocoa Beach for the first time in the school’s 10-year history.

“That was shocking,” senior co-captain Jocelyn Lott said. “I thought it would be close, but I didn’t think we’d end up with the win. So

when we got it, it was really cool. Everyone got really excited.”

Lott, who won a district championship in the 100 butterfly last year, is hoping to get back to the regionals again this year and possibly even get to state in the 200 freestyle relay.

“My relay is always really close in going to states, but we always just miss it,” she said.

“Hopefully, we go this year.”

Lott is a co-captain this year along with Samantha Parris, Grant Spence, Emilio Worden, Justin Scholl and Zach McDermott.

Other top athletes include JT Barlett, Maria Torrez, Jordan Fleisher, Andie Wolfman, Karly Keysor and Abbey Ernst.

Woodard coaches the team along with her mother, Debbie Tweedie, Sandy Spence and diving coach Randy Just.

Haddad, who broke the school record in the 100 butterfly (49.86) earlier this year, is a strong candidate to reach the state meet along with Rousseau and Just.

Others, like Spence — who set the school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.53) last year — also

have a legitimate shot with a big day.

“I’m going to try for breaststroke, but we’ll see,” Spence said. “I’ll have to drop five or six seconds and then I’ll make it, and I’ll break the [school] record again.”

Spence has already been a part of a record-breaking team this season. Viera’s 400 free relay team of Spence, McDermott, Brennan Chase and Haddad broke the school record (3:36) by three seconds at the Cape Coast Conference meet. That group also has its sights set on making the state meet. VV

Viera Charter School sports would benefit from YMCA

The Viera Charter School’s athletic programs have succeeded despite the fact the school doesn’t have its own athletic facilities. A potential new YMCA building in Viera could change all that.

Viera Charter School athletic teams are having a strong year despite the fact that most of their games are played off campus.

In fact, the only facilities the school has at the moment are one practice field for both soccer and flag football and some outdoor basketball courts.

“We’re making do with what we have,” said assistant principal Tom Armstrong, who also serves as the school’s athletic director.

Thanks to an agreement with Brevard County Parks & Recreation, the Panthers play home volleyball and basketball games at the Viera Regional Park Community Center.

Swimming takes place at the Suntree YMCA. The school’s field isn’t big enough to host soccer games — which are played on the road — but there is enough room to host flag football.

The middle school volleyball team finished first in the Space Coast Christian Athletic Association and the fifth/sixth grade volleyball

teams each finished second in the A and B divisions.

“Our kids are very competitive,” Armstrong said. “All of our coaches are volunteers. Most of them are community coaches — parents.”

As well as the Panthers are doing right now, the future could be even brighter if the proposed YMCA Family Center in Viera is built.

“We’re not putting all our eggs in one basket, but we are hoping that the YMCA can get that deal done to where they can raise the funds,” Armstrong said. “We want to be business partners with them. We want to be involved with the YMCA because they would be right next to our property and it would open up a lot of doors for our students and our community.”

Having facilities so close to home would not only allow teams to practice after school instead of at night, it would also create more opportunities for children to participate.

“My goal is to have every kid in some kind of extracurricular activity on campus, regardless of what it is — from robotics to sports,” Armstrong said. “As long as they’re involved in something extracurricular, that will help shape the child. Having the YMCA right next to us would be a great resource.” VV

The program may be new, but it’s already a big hit.

Duran Golf Club is the first in Brevard County to offer a PGA Junior League for children aged 8 to 13, and in its first fall session, 48 players signed up.

“It’s geared toward developing new players,” Duran Golf Pro Matt Morrison said. “What it does is it gets them into a less intimidating team type atmosphere. The matches are played in team scramble formats rather than individual play, which for juniors or beginners is sometimes a little difficult.”

The league runs for five weeks with this fall’s session ending Nov. 14. Players practice on Wednesday, then play a nine-hole match on Saturday. Everyone is guaranteed to play at least three holes.

There are six teams of eight players, and like Little League, they get to wear their own team colors.

Parents are encouraged to follow their children around the course.

“Since I started here 18 months ago, it has been my mission to see this program launch at Duran,” said Justin Blazer, Duran’s director of instruction. “With most of the players being very involved in our academy, [instructor] Andrew [Moore]

“We hope to grow it to where other courses in Brevard County will form a team as well, and then you’ll travel to different courses and play home and away matches,” Morrison said.

Signups for the spring session will begin at the end of March, when the normal PGA Junior League season takes place. That is also when the club can develop an AllStar team of its best players and there will be chances to compete in regional, state and even national competitions. VV

Viera student tells inspiring tale to group of teachers

Trevor Merritt II had a story to tell.

And when the Viera High senior was done addressing 350 Brevard County educators at the Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teaching (ECET2) Conference at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place last month, he was given a standing ovation.

Merritt’s story was an inspiring tale of how he turned his life around through the help of his teachers, his coaches, his mother and his own selfawareness and dedication.

“When I was younger, I went through a lot of struggles with my attitude and my behavior,” he said. “I had sort of a quick temper and when things didn’t go my way, I didn’t know how to handle it. I’d act out at

After getting expelled from Kennedy Middle School in seventh grade, he went to an alternative school where he “grew up a lot.” Little League coaches Alex Goins,

Tim Hearns and Orlando Oquendo became positive male role models.

He went back to Kennedy Middle School for eighth grade, then moved on to Viera High, where he broke his foot during his freshman year of football.

During that time, he realized he wasn’t where he wanted to be athletically and academically and he dedicated himself both on the field and off. As a junior, he had a 3.54 GPA and was taking honors classes for the first time.

The cornerback also received his first scholarship offer in May and then got eight more.

Among those he wanted to thank were his sixth-grade teachers at Ralph Williams Elementary — Christine Ferrer and Lisa Medar. He didn’t realize how much they cared then, but he does now.

“They’re really the best,” he said. “They called my mom all the time to just tell her how I’m doing in school, good or bad. They knew my mom would take care of me and handle me in the right way. They always wanted the best for me. I’m thankful for that right now.”

Viera High football coach Kevin Mays and defensive backs coach Marcus Menyfield have been big influences, too.

In fact, they’re the two main reasons Merritt stayed at Viera after a 1-9 record his freshman year.

“I’ve really built a great relationship with them, not only as a coach and player, but they’re great father figures,” Merritt said.

“I watch how Coach Mays handles his family and that’s something I want to do when I grow up and have a family.

I can look up to him and ask him questions.”

As Merritt made his speech to the room full of teachers and administrators, his mother, Rene, and other family members looked on proudly.

“I’m very proud of him,” Rene Merritt said. “I saw the potential in him when he didn’t see it in himself. Of course, his teachers (did) as well. We stayed on him and stayed on him.”

And now he is a studentathlete who not only has a bright future, but realizes there are a number of people who helped guide him to this point.

That’s what made him a perfect speaker for the ECET2 conference, which is sponsored by the Gates Foundation. A release states it “is premised on the belief that teachers are crucial contributors to student performance, and that their relationships with students are among the most influential in creating educational and economic opportunities for children.”

While Merritt isn’t sure which college he will choose, he does know this: He wants to pay his mom back for all she has done for him.

“My ultimate goal is when I’m around 25 or 30 years old, I don’t want her to work anymore,” he said. “I want her to be living happy. She’s sacrificed a lot just for me.

She’s been there through everything.” VV

Viera East Men’s Golf Association (VEMA) will share the winners and runners-up of the weekly golf tournaments each month. The tournaments are a lot of fun and provide an opportunity to meet new golfers and enjoy the competitive atmosphere.

Although there are winners and losers each week, the group is proud to claim that all are winners this month with the opening of the new restaurant, Divots Grille, at Viera East Golf Club. The staff worked hard for the opening of the redesigned restaurant, unveiling the remodeled and freshly painted walls, new carpeting, all with the same great staff, great meals and a menu with reduced prices. The next project will be to enclose the patio area to accommodate larger groups in a more private setting and introduce one or two nightly dinners.

“First and foremost, we like to think outside the box and find different avenues for our guys to not just work hard but also make it fun,” Shulman said. “We could just condition every day in the gym to get in better shape, but it gets monotonous. So to do an event like this, it’s good. I think it will be a great team-bonding event for our guys as well.”

Shulman was happy with his team’s effort. “If you’ve ever been in a spin class, that stuff is not easy,” Shulman said. “It’s very, very difficult.

So for them to be in there working, getting in better shape in a different avenue than just running, plus saving our knees and ankles a little bit by doing the spin class, I think it’s going to be very helpful, very beneficial.

Rowlette arranged for the team to participate in a spin class, a yoga class and a group exercise class on three different days.

“As opposed to just having them come over and do some free weights or just have them do their own thing, we’re going to do what we call sport-specific,” Rowlette said. “Basketball players are running up and down the court, so cardio is important.”

Shulman felt the classes would help the team in several ways as it prepared for the 2015 regular season, which started Oct. 30 and 31 with the four-team Eastern Florida Halloween Classic tournament at the Melbourne campus. The Titans went 29-5 in 2014, losing in the first round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Basketball Championships in Hutchinson, Kan.

As the Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball season heats up this month, players may have an ace up their sleeve from unusual prep workouts.

Team members cheered, chanted and sang while working up a serious sweat during a recent spin class at the Suntree YMCA Family Center, 6300 N. Wickham Road, Suite 114.

As dance music blared in the background, Titans players pedaled on stationary bicycles while class instructor Gina Palombi shouted instructions.

Suntree YMCA director Joe Rowlette came up with the idea for the men’s class after having hosted similar classes for the EFSC women’s basketball team. After talking with EFSC men’s basketball coach Jeremy Shulman,

Families invited to celebrate Suntree Fall Fest on Nov. 21

The cooler weather of Florida’s fall gives families more opportunities to get outside and celebrate the season together.

The Parent Teacher Organization at Suntree Elementary is busy planning an event that takes the best of the autumn in the area and gives families the chance to have simple fun and support the neighborhood school at the same time.

The Suntree Community Fall Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at the school. The event will feature food trucks, carnival snacks, a vendor marketplace, a silent auction, a bake sale and other entertainment. Mimi’s Crafts will be on hand with a tile-painting project. MAX Elite are the event’s platinum sponsor and other community sponsors include Matthew Development LLC, Viera Storage and Valderrama Orthodontics.

“We will have plenty of activities for families and even the items they buy from the food trucks benefits us,” said Eileen Carmer, Suntree Elementary PTO president.

The fall festival is open to the public and admission to the event is free.

“We want families to just come out and enjoy themselves at this Suntree Elementary tradition,” said Amy Lew, a PTO vice president.

The Fall Festival follows a very successful fundraiser put on by the Suntree Elementary PTO in September that was designed to raise money for a new playground at that

school that is going to cost an estimated $75,000 for equipment and installation.

The Boosterthon event asked students to raise pledges based on how many laps they could jog. More than $24,000 was raised during the event through individual and business pledges, with 10 percent of that money going directly back to classrooms. Coupled with money earmarked from the school itself, the new playground is close to being fully funded.

The PTO is still seeking business or individual sponsors to help them reach their goal in time to install the new equipment during spring break.

The playground in place now is in need of repair in several places and has outdated equipment. The school district has offered

Great Tastes at Suntree’s top prize won by a newcomer

Jeff Kaplan says he’s thrilled that his restaurant, Palm Shores Bistro, won first place at the Oct. 17 Great Tastes at Suntree event at the Suntree Country Club.

Other prizes included the Suntree Rotary President’s Choice Award, which went to Fiesta Azteca and the Best Decorated Booth Award went to UNO Pizzeria & Grill.

It was Kaplan’s first foray into the event that drew nearly 40 local restaurants and 544 attendees this year to raise money for the Rotary Club of Suntree.

“The public voted for us to win out of all the restaurants there and we’re really proud of that,” Kaplan said.

The Great Tastes at Suntree is the Rotary Club of Suntree’s major fundraiser. In addition to the restaurants, other non-food businesses sponsor spots.

Proceeds will be awarded to selected charities at the Friday meeting, Nov. 13 at Suntree Country Club.

Landi wants to get word out about Holy Trinity

James Landi has been in education for more than 30 years, and there is always one thing he looks for.

“I’ve always tried to be in places where the children are put at the center of the program, where their needs — both the educational care of the child and also the nurturing of the child and the ethos of the organization supported the kids,” Holy Trinity’s interim Head of School said.

“This is a unique environment on both campuses.”

Landi, 69, was appointed on Sept. 23 to replace former Head of School Christopher Hayes, who abruptly resigned in July.

Though he holds the title of “interim” HOS, Landi made it clear he does not see himself being in the position of a caretaker.

“That was one of the questions I had (before I was hired) because I’m an activist,’ he said. “I always have been. I could not justify my existence on campus with a salary if I were simply acting as a figurehead. So during the vetting process, I said, ‘If this is what you want, I won’t sign on for that.’

“They wanted somebody who was an activist. They wanted somebody who was fully engaged. They wanted somebody who would take the school to the next step.

And that’s what I’m doing.”

believes his biggest challenge is simply getting the word out “about what a great school it is.”

As part of that effort, the school will have an open house from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sunday Nov. 8 on the upper campus in Suntree and Nov. 7 on the lower campus in Melbourne. The school also encourages parents and students to bring their friends to campus during the year, believing that once a prospective student or their family member see the school, it will sell itself.

“The school is fully enrolled, but there should be even more pressure from the outside community in

terms of people looking at the school and seeing what types of opportunities are available at the school for their children.

“I think many parents miss a golden opportunity to look at alternatives in education because their notion of education is that it’s the public school.”

Landi noted that collegeprep schools that belong to the National Association of Independent Schools

educate only .6 percent (or 600,000 of 50 million) of the school-age population.

Among the benefits of a school like Holy Trinity is not only the quality of the education the children will receive, but also the familyfriendly environment in which it will take place.

“This is a school that embraces families as well as children, whereas in traditional mass education, that’s simply impossible,”

Landi said. “In a school of 1,000 kids, you can’t have 2,000 parents at the door all the time.

“In a small-school setting like this, the parents are very important. They’re contributions, in terms of coming to events, in terms of supporting their kids, and the ways they can volunteer is a real plus.

“If you look at the school in terms of three legs of a stool, you’ve got the kids, you’ve got the teachers and you’ve got the parents. Parents are really important.”

In the short time he has been on campus, Landi has been impressed with the way the students have interacted, not only with each other, but with the teachers and administrators.

Whether the interim title is eventually removed from Landi’s title will be determined down the road, but for now he is fully engaged and appears to be enjoying being back in the education environment.

“It’s in my blood,” he said.

“It’s hard not to do this kind of work. I’m coming out of my third retirement. … It’s not with any sense of a lack of energy or enthusiasm. It’s just really great to be back at school and see kids and teachers and parents.” VV

Viera Charter 5th grader wins Launch the Vote art contest

Sarah Biesack is one talented girl.

The Viera Charter School fifth grader already plays the piano and is an accomplished violinist and state champion fiddle player.

Now, she can add awardwinning artist to her growing list of accomplishments.

The 10-year-old was named the winner of the second annual Launch the Vote Student Art Contest put on

by Lori Scott, Brevard County Supervisor of Elections.

“I haven’t won anything with art before,” said Biesack, who admitted she was surprised when her mother, Maryann, walked into her room to break the news to her.

As the winner, Biesack

received a giant stuffed cow from Chick-fil-A, and a Chick-fil-A party for up to 25 people, which she plans to share with her classmates.

She also received a proclamation from Brevard County commissioners.

There were six contest winners in all — first, second and third place along with three honorable mentions (one of which went to Brianna Firkel of Suntree Elementary). All of their artwork will be displayed in the Supervisor of Elections Viera Office for the next year.

The first-, second- and third-place drawings were displayed in Chick-fil-A restaurants throughout Brevard County in October.

After hearing about the contest from her fifth-grade

teacher at Viera Charter School, Audrey Luss, Biesack was one of more than 500 fourthand fifth-grade students from around the county to enter.

The inspiration for her drawing was simple.

“On the piece of paper, it just said, ‘Launch the Vote’ so the first thing I thought of was American symbols of our

country,” Biesack said. “That would, of course, include the flag, an eagle and the Space Shuttle so I decided to put that on when I illustrated it.”

She may be a gifted artist, but Biesack is also an accomplished violinist.

A member of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra in Orlando, she is the Concert

Mistress (also known as head violinist) for the Prelude Orchestra.

She has also won the Florida State Fiddle Contest three years in a row ­— twice in the junior category and this past year in the youth category.

Talk about having a bright future. VV

Being named a U.S. Presidential Scholar is one of the highest national honors a high school senior can receive.

And come next June, Viera High’s Kristen Anthony could be a member of the 52nd class of Presidential Scholars to be honored at the White House and meet other national leaders in Washington D.C. Anthony will represent her school — and the entire district — for the award in career and technical education (CTE), a new category which was added

by President Barack Obama last year. The program itself has been around since 1964 and had previously not been expanded since 1979.

“It’s an honor,” Anthony said. “It’s really cool because it’s the first time that this part of the program is going to be used.”

Up to 161 Presidential Scholars are chosen every year following nominations and judging at both the state and national levels.

Carrie Humphrys, who teaches Interior and Fashion Design at Viera High, nominated Anthony for the award and wrote a glowing description of the multitalented senior, who carries a 4.0 GPA in CTE programs and a 3.77 GPA overall.

other students, noting she taught many lessons on chief architect software in preparation for taking her certification exam.

“After passing her exam, Kristen spent the next month tutoring students who did not pass the first time and went on to pass after her tutoring,” Humphrys wrote.

Anthony is also set to take the Adobe Illustrator certification exam, even though she is in Fashion 2 and the exam is usually reserved for students in Fashion 3.

In addition, Anthony has already passed the early child education exam and has worked extensively with the school’s VPK program.

“It’s fun because you get to teach them how to add and subtract, but you also get to play with them and just get to know them and their personalities,” she said “[The most rewarding part is] being with them all the time.

You form bonds with them.”

As much as she loves working with kids, Anthony knows what career path she wants to follow.

“I want to be an interior designer/architect,” she said.

“I want to go to the Savannah College of Art and Design and get my master’s in Fine Arts.

“I don’t know if I want to double major in Architecture and Interior Design. I’ll have to see how much of a workload that is.” VV

Viera High School Theatre Troupe is presenting “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” Nov. 20 through 22 in the school’s auditorium.

The Peanuts gang is having a moment in the spotlight.

Again.

The perennial favorites, led by Charlie Brown and his spirited beagle Snoopy, will hit the big screen on Nov. 6 and reach out to the next generation through a fulllength animated feature.

Here in Brevard, the Peanuts crew will also get a mainstage spotlight when the Viera High School Theatre Troupe presents the 1967 musical comedy, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

Four performances at the school are sure to keep audiences entertained and saying “good grief” by the end.

Director and Viera High theater teacher Eloise Evans double cast the six main characters in the show in order to accommodate the talent in the troupe. A 30-member cast fills out the scenes on stage.

“I try to match up the

shows I pick with what is popular. Last year, we did Cinderella when the live movie came out. This year, it’s Charlie Brown and his friends,” Evans said.

Evans has a personal connection to the film, too.

Her son, Mason Evans, a 2004 graduate of Viera High School, is one of the technical directors on the movie, specializing in the crowd scenes. And Evans’ grandson, Luke Wesley Evans, will also receive a credit at the end of the film as one of the “production babies” born during the making of the movie.

Matthew Cardillo is a junior and will play lead character Charlie Brown in two of the productions.

“I think the Peanuts characters are still really popular because kids today can still relate to them,” Cardillo said. “This will be a really fun show for kids to see.”

Taylor Long is a senior and she agrees that the Peanuts

characters have lasting appeal.

“This storyline really connects with people of all ages. The characters, the relationships, their attitudes,” Long said. “It’s sort of funny, too, because the way the characters interact is sort of like our group anyway.”

There will be shows at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday Nov. 20, 21 and 22, and a 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 21. All shows will be at the Viera High School auditorium.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at the door.

There will also be a special Peanuts and Pals party with lunch and a meet-andgreet with cast members beginning at noon on Nov. 21. Tickets are $15 per person and include tickets for the matinee.

Holy Trinity students to perform first chamber opera

It’s a performance the world has never seen before … and it takes place at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.

Students will perform the chamber opera “Evangeline” at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Scott Center for Worship and Performing Arts.

Written by Vermont-based composer Gwyneth Walker, “Evangeline” has been performed only twice in the world. This performance, however, will mark the first time it has been done with a 17-member cast that includes four soloists and a chorus.

In fact, after a series of email exchanges, Walker even sent Holy Trinity chorus and orchestra director Lorie Wacaster new music to go with the arrangement.

“It was originally written for just four soloists, and I explained to her that I had a chorus I wanted to involve in some of the parts that were for the four soloists,” Wacaster said. “She was asking me which parts we were doing, and I told her, and (the next day) she sent me a whole page re-written just for the chorus. That’s amazing.”

The performance will mark the first time Holy Trinity students have performed a chamber opera, an opera written to be performed with a musical ensemble rather than a full orchestra.

As described in a school press release, “Evangeline” tells the story of the expulsion of the Acadian people from Nova Scotia, Canada, from 1755 to 1764.

Forced into exile by the British, the Acadians were separated from one another and traveled the United States and abroad looking for their loved ones. Many of them settled in southern Louisiana and later became known as “Cajuns.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a poem, “Evangeline,” documenting these events in 1847. While the characters in the poem are fictitious, their story represents a very real and tragic series of events.

The opera focuses on a young Acadian woman named Evangeline, who is betrothed to her childhood sweetheart, Gabriel. However, before they can marry, British soldiers separate them and they travel the U.S. searching for each other.

“The music is probably the most enjoyable part,”

“The story is very moving.

The whole thing is just a joy to create.”

Sands, a senior, believes the audience will be captivated by the opera’s moving story.

“I really love how emotional and how true the feelings that are expressed in this opera are, and I love how

both the music and acting go hand-in-hand to express this,” he said.

“The music is gorgeous, but what’s more important than that is that the audience, I feel, will directly empathize with the characters on stage. … I feel so grateful to be performing such a composition.”

In another email exchange between Walker and Wacaster, the composer expressed her appreciation as well.

“I am delighted that your students are presenting ‘Evangeline’ this fall,” Walker wrote. “I am quite impressed with your efforts, for I had not thought of high school students performing this opera.”

Tickets will be available the day of the performance.

Doors open at 4 p.m. Cost for adults is $5; no charge for students. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Schleismann, who has never played the lead on stage before, was asked if she was nervous.

“Yeah, I am nervous,” she said. “But more than that, I’m determined to succeed, to just enjoy the performance.” VV

Hands-on appeal draws art lovers to annual festival

Throngs will flock to the Eau Gallie Art District for the 19th annual Artworks Festival, Nov. 20 and 21. This free event, held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, will take place on Highland Avenue near the Eau Gallie Civic Center.

What makes this art festival different is its handson appeal. All artists will be showcasing, as well as creating, their work on-site.

“When I see young people, I hand them my brush and let them work on a painting to get them involved,” said Phyllis Shipley, one of many painters from the Viera/ Suntree area affiliated with the Fifth Avenue Art Gallery.

“That’s one of the things that we artists are striving to do: to get the community involved in art.”

The way Shipley paints makes it easy for participants to help create a work of art, especially the younger set.

“This is really an interactive show,” Shipley said. “When I paint, I never know what my subject matter is to start with. I start with colors and then see what I want to do. So it’s kind of neat to see what the kids come up with.”

The event will host artists who work in a variety of media, such as glass blowing, woodworking, clay, water color, acrylics, jewelry, digital art and photography.

The event is a juried show and there are awards and prize monies for the artists, including best of show. And, of course, spectacular art is also for sale.

“With every painting [or work] that we sell, the buyer is taking a part of the artist home with them. That is

Revitalized Promenade Shoppes of Suntree welcomes new tenants

Promenade Shoppes of Suntree Plaza at 6450 N. Wickham Road in Suntree recently welcomed two new tenants.

Mattress Xpress has opened at Suite 110, and interior work is ongoing at Tely’s Chinese Restaurant in Suite 112 at the plaza, which has had several long-vacant storefronts.

Formerly Furniture in a Box, Mattress Xpress offers brand-name mattresses and bedroom furniture, office desks, chairs and cabinets, entertainment centers, living room tables, book cases and storage cabinets.

Two other Mattress Xpress showrooms in Brevard County are at 3540 W. New Haven Ave. in Melbourne and 401 Cross Road at U.S. 1 in Cocoa. Store hours at all three locations are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The two appear again in a new TV ad for Mattress Xpress.

“Suntree’s a great, great area,” said Bolding, who had

eyed the plaza for a store location for several years before opening at the site of the old Osler Medical Clinic.

“The people there are just phenomenal. I fell in love with that area back in 1993.”

The store will have a grand opening this month, Bolding said.

“We’re not a 2,000-store chain or even a 200-store chain,” he said. “We’re a mom and pop. We’re your local brand, so to speak, and we live here so your money stays here in Brevard County rather than going to Texas or some other place. We know most everybody in Brevard County. We see you at the grocery stores, we see you at the restaurants, the high school football games. We participate in everything here and we love Brevard and

don’t plan on moving out.”

The shopping plaza is along a corridor of North Wickham Road that is experiencing major growth.

The Fresh Market store opened in September at the new 50,000-square-foot Pineda Landings shopping center at Wickham and Jordan Blass Drive. To the north of Pineda Landings, construction is continuing on the $29 million Brevard Medical City, an all-in-one medical complex on 24.5 acres.

“That’s a great concept,” Bolding said of The Fresh Market. “Obviously it’s a good fit for Suntree, and we feel we’re a good fit for Suntree.”

Creative ’crows draw record crowd

The fourth annual Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival drew a record crowd to its Oct. 17 first-time site at The Avenue Viera. Nearly 2,500 individuals attended throughout the day, from families with children to seniors.

The feat required advance planning.

“We knew that with the interest level for this popular event, we would need to go beyond the typical use of the interior courtyard at The Avenue Viera where most of the events there centralize,” said Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue-Gaines, founder and CEO of Bluewater Creative Group marketing, expo and events firm.

“We placed attractions and scarecrows at all the entrances from the outer mall and along walkways so the event was evenly spread out and so attendees never felt crowded, with lots of things to see and do to last the whole day.”

Major sponsors for the event include ACE Hardware, The Viera Company, Arnold Air and Pizza Gallery & Grill. The Avenue Viera enhanced the event with additional entertainment and added trick-or-treating throughout the mall to cap the event in the afternoon.

“It was an amazing event. Viera Voice just did a fantastic job,” said The Avenue Viera marketing coordinator Kristi Furci. The venue donated $1,000 to the Viera High School art department for students to build their scarecrow entry, Shopping Goddess of The Avenue Viera.

All 37 scarecrows and schoolcrows displayed at the event were silent-auctioned off to benefit two charities, Devereux residential school in Viera for children with emotional challenges and The Children’s Advocacy Center in Suntree, which works to prevent child abuse.

Artist board members of The Art Gallery of Viera at The Avenue Viera judged the scarecrows for artistic creativity, with a $500 cash prize sponsored by Viera Pizza, which went to Minion Mischief, built by SportsClips at The Avenue Viera.

“There were some amazing creations here, very artistic, extremely well done. It was not an easy feat, but we had a great time,” said gallery events director Sheryl Hughes, who judged the works with gallery executive director Susan Cole Stone and creative director Jerry Hanzl.

The People’s Choice Award, voted on by Viera Voice readers who strolled the greater Viera/Suntree area from Oct. 1 to 15 looking at ’crows hosted at area businesses, went to Sunny B. Fit by Sunbay Fitness in Viera, which won a trophy, $100 from Viera Voice and bragging rights for the year.

Nearly 600 Scarecrow Stroll-ers visited businesses on the route, with those who saw all 37 ’crows putting in their ballots for a drawing for tickets for four to LEGOLAND. Katy and Rob Otteson won the tickets, which could not have been a more welcome surprise for young son Riley.

“He was beyond insanely thrilled, he is such a huge LEGOs fan,” Katy Otteson said.

Those who saw 20 or more ’crows put their ballots in for tickets for four for Smash Golf at Duran Golf Club, won by Zanett Thomas.

New this year was a MiniCrow contest where children ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 15 could make a miniature scarecrow no taller than three feet, with a $50 cash prize from Viera Voice going to one winner in each division.

Julie Kinzey is used to the spotlight and wants to share that experience with others.

A classically trained soprano, Kinzey has appeared with the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra, Intermezzo Opera, Opera New Jersey and more.

Speaking of Kinzey, Metropolitan Opera conductor Steven Crawford said “in this day of ‘cookiecutter’ voices, hers is a breath of fresh air. It possesses all the necessary ingredients of a world-class voice.”

As a voice teacher in Viera, Kinzey strives to translate the career lessons she has learned to every type of singer. She wants to meet singers wherever they are musically, and take them to that next step.

“Every voice is different. I teach students from age 5 to 100,” she said.

“For children especially, singing can be very much a self-esteem builder. Learning music at a young age affects their self-confidence. I love watching them blossom as they grow. It is very rewarding.”

Kinzey has lived in Viera for three years and has about 10 regular voice students. She still maintains a performance schedule as well.

She holds a master’s degree in voice performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music. Before that, she earned a bachelor’s degree in music, voice performance from Westminster Choir College. She actually started her voice degree at Florida State but transferred to the

Viera resident and world-renowned soprano Julie Kinzey is teaching others what she has learned in her career.

When her degrees were complete, she studied at the International Institute of Vocal Arts in Brescia, Italy.

Kinzey was the 2004 winner of the prestigious Jenny Lind Competition and sang throughout Sweden, including performances in Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg. She has numerous other awards to her credit from competitions all over the world.

Eventually, Kinzey hopes to become a faculty member at

a local college or university and impart her vast musical knowledge to the next generation of performers.

“I think I have a lot to offer that caliber of singer,” she said.

Her own daughter, Cailyn, in elementary school, has shown a lot of interest in vocal performance already.

“She has a beautiful voice. I look forward to seeing how it grows,” Kinzey said.

Nathalie Burgos was among the hard-working young volunteers who helped out at the craft making, pumpkin painting and balloon inflating stations at the Oct. 17 Viera Voice Harvest Festival at The Avenue Viera. A student at Kennedy Middle School, which serves Viera families west of Murrell Road, Nathalie is in teacher Emily Jensen’s civics class and in the Cambridge program, which requires students put in volunteer hours.

“When using disposable diapers from birth to age 3, a baby may contribute up to a ton of waste sent to the landfills,” she said. “I didn’t want my friends to contribute to that.”

According to ABC News, “all those dirty diapers amount to a growing mound of waste.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has estimated about 18 billion diapers are thrown into landfills every year. And a 1998 study by the Environmental Protection Agency found that diapers made up 3.4 million tons of waste, or 2.1 percent of U.S. garbage in landfills that year.”

Despite those numbers, a WebMD article affirms “there are some parents who are convinced that cloth diapers are more Earth-friendly.

Experts, though, say the answer isn’t clear-cut [since] research has suggested that both disposable and cloth diapers affect the environment negatively — just in different ways.

The American Academy of Pediatrics takes no position on cloth vs. disposable diapers.”

Ultimately, parents, like any of us, are left to make their own personal choice based on what they know, what they prioritize, and how they live and want to live. With all the technology and scientific research, solutions to improve what we do can be found if we seek them. The option is ours: to waste or to waste not. The 75th wedding anniversary of Sam and Nelle Woods of Indian River Colony Club in Viera brought in nearly 100 family members for the special occasion.

Nelle Woods, originally from Gulfport, Miss., had moved to Murfreesboro when she met Sam, who later had a long career in the Air Force, surprisingly as a veterinarian.

The couple lived in Murfreesboro and spent several years in Hawaii, where they lived on the island of Oahu, before moving to IRCC 20 years ago.

Their secret to being married long enough to be able to reach this important and rare milestone of a 75th wedding anniversary?
