Suntree area resident John Masterson responded to the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and has a message for the world.

In addition to a life-size Santa’s workshop, holidaythemed sand sculptures will be created by local artists Jill Harris and Thomas Koet from Sandsational. Families can watch while the artists bring the sculptures to life the first week of December.

There will be food vendors, carolers and jazz and other live bands throughout the 34 days of festivities through Christmas. One-time, repeat and season admission costs will be announced on the event website LightUpViera. com that will launch Oct. 1

Last year’s inaugural Light Up Viera parade and concert was named one of Central Florida’s top five holiday events, behind heavy hitters Disney World, Universal Studios and Gaylord Palms Resort. Organizers hope this year’s holiday offerings will push it even closer to the top and attract patrons all peak season.

Duda & Sons land company that founded Viera 25 years ago Aug. 4.

“We’re building a community in Viera and these events, put on through sponsorships to the Viera Future Foundation, are one of the ways we are working to bring friends and neighbors together,” said Tracy Duda Chapman, CEO of The Viera Company. Funds raised for the event go to help cover costs and there is no profit, Dowd added.

New Viera 5K/1K run will help birds and athletes soar

An endangered bird species will get friends of a feather Sept. 27 with the inaugural Caracara 5K/1 Mile Trail Run at the Ritch Grissom Memorial Viera Wetlands, an important nesting area for the fewer than 250 established adult pairs in Florida.

Proceeds from the 7:30 a.m. Saturday run will serve a dual purpose, to help clear prairie land adjacent to the wetlands of invasive Brazilian pepper trees that destroy nesting sites and help serious runners pursue the sport as athletes, according to the event founder.

“I grew up loving the outdoors and its inhabitants and I wanted to give something back,” said Angela Cobb, founder of Underground Runners, an organization focused on creating, designing and producing races to benefit the environment, the community and the athlete,

according to its mission. The Viera run will be its first.

Runners will traverse trails atop the elevated berms surrounding and interspersing 200 acres of wetlands created to give a final polish to reclaimed water released from the adjacent treatment plant.

The area has become an important permanent or temporary home to a wide variety of bird species, as well as turtles, fish, alligators and all other manner of fauna and the native flora to support them.

Crested caracaras are regal-looking brown and light tan birds that look like what might result from crossing a great bald eagle with a chicken and then turning it into a long-legged cartoon. The raptors are fierce predators that are equally happy with prey that is already dead and decaying, and are often found running or flying low along the ground.

Volunteers, Cobb among them, work painstakingly and slowly to remove the pepper trees and often suffer injury from their thorns.

Berry has a goal of raising $5,000 to clear trees on five acres southeast of the wetlands with a mechanical rotor chopper drum that will grind down the trees.

Volunteers can then merely make sure new trees do not grow back. Eventually, the goal is to expand the area to 25 acres cleared of the nuisance trees.

“It’s a Catch 22,” Cobb said.

“You can’t get good enough unless you are getting sponsors to allow you to train full time, and you can’t get sponsors until you are good enough.”

Suntree Cancer Support Group members trade fear for hope

Susan La Rocca is frequently admired for her gleaming white coif, her hair flowing in a perfect full-body wave. She often is asked if she does any special treatments to get it that way.

“I tell them yes, it took me six months and $93,000,” said the cancer survivor who received three separate chemo series to battle the Big C. “First it grew back blond and curly and I looked like Shirley Temple, then it came in straight and reddish, but the third time’s a charm.”

Another wave of laughter washes through the Cancer Support Group that meets at 10 a.m. the fourth Thursday of the month at Suntree United Methodist Church.

Current patients, survivors in remission, caregivers, spouses and other loved ones attend to share sorrows so they may be diminished, share joys so that they may be amplified, and share information so that others may be helped.

“You can’t find this support any place else,” said survivor Fran Baker, who with her husband, Sy, and La Rocca help organize the peersupported group founded five years ago to bring together kindred spirits.

“Even if you have a wonderful best friend who is there for you at every turn, there will come a time when

you must find someone who has walked the walk,” said Baker, who recently was declared in remission at five years cancer free. “Unless they have been there, done that, they can’t relate. When you find someone who has experienced what you have, you no longer feel alone, you start to feel hope, you begin to gain strength.”

Members talk about what it feels like to first receive a diagnosis, problems with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, balancing treatment with the demands of caring for a family, or just plain being overwhelmed. But most of all, they talk.

“Socialization is an important part of life overall, not just when you get sick,” said Jill Kibler, SUMC’s new director of Congregational Care. The group is one of many life-support resources in Kibler’s toolkit offered to members and the community at large when calls come in for help of any kind, whether it be goods from the food pantry, or a hospital visit from a pastor, or setting up a memorial service.

“But when you get cancer, often friends and even family members scatter on the four winds, yet you have this basic need that is all the greater.”

Members often go to lunch after the meeting. They may have special holiday parties.

With new treatments and medicines coming out all the time, there is every reason to take heart, Baker said.

Popular Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival is family fun for a good cause

The third Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll gets underway Oct. 1 through 15, culminating with the Harvest Festival from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19 at the new Viera Beach at the Holiday Inn Melbourne-Viera Conference Center.

Businesses are invited to build a scarecrow to generate foot traffic along a mapped route across the greater Viera/Suntree area, the public coming to view and vote on the unique creation for the People’s Choice top award and bragging rights for the year. The ‘crows will be on silent auction to benefit a charity of the builder’s choice.

“Creating a scarecrow is a fun, team-building exercise that gives employees an even greater sense of pride in their workplace,” said Jill Gaines, CEO of Bluewater Creative Group, publisher of Viera Voice and Senior Life newspapers and Viera MD and Boomer Guide magazines as well as creator of popular

expos and events.

“The public loves having fun, free activities and events to enjoy, not to mention chances to win great prizes for their efforts. Also, it’s wonderful to know that the business you patronize cares about the community, and that your support of it is helping a charity.”

A pull-out map will be published in October’s Viera Voice that is also a ballot, showing readers where to go to see the scarecrows and get a secret code as proof. The more scarecrows they enjoy, the more valuable the prizes there are up for grabs when they drop off their ballot at locations in east, west, north and south areas of greater Viera.

Schools will also create schoolcrows, to be posted at business booster locations along the route for viewing, voting and silent auction.

The top three schoolcrows and the top 10 business ’crows by popular vote will be moved to the festival for continued silent auction, as well as the three scarecrows

that have raised the most money for their charity or school. The ’crow team to raise the most money will win a matching donation for its charity or school of

up to $500, sponsored by Viera Voice. The ’crows will also be judged for artistic creativity and a trophy given to the top scarecrow and the top schoolcrow.

Viera/Suntree Little League concludes a season to remember

Logan Plante’s first experience as an All-Star baseball player was one he won’t soon forget.

“I’ll remember it forever,” the 14-year-old said.

Plante played left field on the Viera/Suntree Little League Juniors team that went all the way to the Southeast Region final. Along the way, the boys won district, sectional and regional championships while also capturing the attention of many Viera residents.

Plante, who had been a standout gymnast before taking up baseball at age 11, said he has heard from a number of people since the team returned from Greenville, S.C. “Everyone’s been congratulating us and saying good job for how far we went,” he said.

The Juniors played a number of exciting games on their way to the region finals, including a dramatic 9-8 semifinal victory in which VSLL erased a 7-3

late-inning deficit, tying the game in the bottom of the seventh and winning it in the bottom of the eighth when Conner Sheer drilled a pitch off the fence to score Mason Behrens with the winning run.

“That felt awesome when we came back and won that. …

We thought the season was going to end there, but we just came back,” Plante said. “(People were saying), ‘Keep fighting until the game is done.’

And we did.”

While Sheer was certainly the hero of that game, the VSLL got outstanding performances

throughout the playoffs from Sheer, Plante, Behrens, Andrew Brait, Jackson Taylor, Eric Adler, Kyler Doane, J.J. Santos, Jordan Allen, B.J. Lanza, Michael Buccieri and Carson Warrix.

While the players were obviously a solid unit on the field, they were close off of it as well. During one break between games, the coaches went looking for the players to find them hanging out

While the weather has been scorching hot, scores at Viera East Golf Course also have been scintillating for members of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association.

Jim Minsky, 74, continued his torrid play while walking the course with playing partners Gene Dreisbach and John Gulla. Minsky shot a round below his age once again at Viera East Golf Club.

Bob Mattingly, a retired Air Force 130 instructor from Louisville, shot 69 to shoot below his age of 71.

Mattingly played his round with Freddie Baltazar.

Bob David, who recently visited Ireland and Scotland with his wife Kris, carded a hole-in-one during one of his first rounds of golf after returning to Florida. He used a nine-iron to ace the 140yard, fourth hole at Viera East.

David also recorded a holein-on on the same hole on March 7, 2011. David also posted a hole-in-one on No. 16 on June 6, 2011.

The Viera East Men’s Golf Association recently conducted a Beat the Pros contest for its members.

Lane Burney and Mike Hogan, both professionals, posted 65 for the score to beat.

Bob Sobeck and Ed Raleigh teamed up to win with a score of 60. Steve Wing and Dale Zeigler finished second at 64.

Two other teams — Jim Robinson and Jim Benton; and Dave Hogan and Bill Hall — tied the pros by carding 65.

The new season for the Viera East Men’s Golf Association begins in October. A kickoff luncheon meeting is planned after normal play on Thursday, Oct. 9. All members and prospective new members are reminded to pay their dues. The new VEMA board plans to have another challenging year of golf with a lot of surprises.VV

Space Coast United reels in five soccer awards

Turns out, the Space Coast United Soccer Club isn’t just good at winning games on the field.

It can kick butt at awards ceremonies, too.

The Florida Youth Soccer Association (FYSA) had its 2014 awards banquet last month at the annual general meeting in Lake Buena Vista.

After nine state-wide awards were presented, five of them went to members of Space Coast United.

The FYSA gave out 14 awards that night, but Space Coast United had the most winners by far among other clubs in the state.

While all the awards were big, it says a lot that Space Coast United was recognized as the FYSA TOPSoccer Club of the Year for the high quality and consistent growth of the club’s efforts to provide mentally and physically handicapped youth with the opportunity to play soccer.

Ryan Zinone was honored

as Florida’s TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year. The graduate of Melbourne Central Catholic wrote his college application essay about his experience as a mentor at Space Coast United and is now attending Notre Dame University.

Dean Flexton, who serves as Space Coast United’s Junior NPL director of Coaching, won the FYSA Score Boys Competitive Coach of the Year honor. He trained the U12 boys team and coached the U16 boys team, both of which had highly successful seasons.

Other winners included Cheryl Roe, who was named the FYSA Publix Parent of the Year award for her work on behalf of her daughter’s teams through the years and her volunteerism with the club and promotion of youth soccer in the community.

Holy Trinity hopes to set fast pace on volleyball court

The key to success for this year’s Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy girls volleyball team comes from a slight variation of a phrase used by Tom Cruise in the movie “Top Gun.” The Tigers feel the need … the need for speed.

“We’re undersized, so for us, we’re working on trying to get faster in our offense,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski said. “Our key is going to be ball control. We

need a good pass so we can set the ball quicker. We need to isolate our attackers so they’re one-on-one with the blocker and the way to do that is with speed.”

While the Tigers may not have the height they had last season when they went 21-5 and reached the regional semifinals, they do have the luxury of having seven returners to go with five new players — two transfers and three players up from the junior varsity.

After ‘whirlwind,’ Crockett settles in as new Holy Trinity AD

Scott Crockett wasn’t kidding when he described his journey to becoming the new athletic director at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy as being a “whirlwind.”

In the span of less than a month, Crocket went from vacuuming his pool in Collierville, Tenn. to making the 14-hour drive to Melbourne in a U-Haul with his car attached and setting up shop in his new office.

“It will be a challenge for me, but I’m excited,” Crockett said. “And to come into something that’s not broken is a benefit. I’m just blessed to be here and thankful they gave me the opportunity.”

The 40-year-old Crockett is the new AD … who replaced the previous new AD, Thomas Jamerson … who was hired in June to take over for the departed Lenny Paoletti.

A school official said Jamerson decided not to come to Melbourne due to some family issues.

Crockett was not part of the candidate pool when Jamerson was hired, but

Hayes and the two spoke for roughly an hour. Crockett then went to Google to look up more information about the school.

Impressed by what he saw, he went through the interview process and the announcement of his hiring came on July 24.

Crockett comes to Holy Trinity after serving as the assistant AD at St. George’s Independent School in Collierville for the past seven years.

“I worked for a great AD (Brent Hill),” Crockett said.

“He let me do a lot of things.

He really prepped me for this. He was awesome.”

Though he does have some tweaks he would like to make — like meeting with students who are about to be put on academic probation to encourage them to get their grades up — he doesn’t plan to make any radical changes to an athletic program coming

off the best year in school history.

The Tigers won their firstever Florida High School Athletic Association Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award for Class 3A private schools last year.

During Crockett’s seven years at St. George’s, the school won 16 team state championships, 10 individual state titles and had 44 students sign college scholarship offers.

“My general philosophy on athletics is … it’s important that the kids are working hard, the coaches are getting the most out of their kids and ultimately, sportsmanship,” Crockett said.

“I think that’s key to the success of a school because if everyone’s working hard and doing their job, (adding) sportsmanship on top of it, there’s no way to go wrong.”

Two area schools bring in new assistant principals

Ralph Williams Elementary School and Suntree Elementary School have new assistant principals who are geared up for a great year on both properties.

Wesley Herold has been named assistant principal at Williams Elementary. He served as a teacher and fillin administrator at Quest Elementary School for the past four years. During that time, he also received his Educational Leadership degree from Nova Southeastern University.

“I am a product of Brevard public schools and Merritt Island High School,” Herold said. “I came back to the county to teach and coach swimming.”

Williams Elementary parents are invited to get to know the new administrators at “Mocha Monday” meetings or at monthly Parent Teacher Organization meetings.

High on the priority list for the school is continuing to provide strong technology for students and it will be an ongoing topic for conversations.

Suntree Elementary School also has a new face in the role of assistant principal, Frank O’Leary. The former teacher-turned administrator spent the past 15 years at Sherwood Elementary — 10 of those years as assistant principal.

“I’m most looking forward to working with the families. There is so much going on here at Suntree and I’m just excited to be a part,” O’Leary said.

He earned his undergraduate degree while still living in Ireland, and then went on to receive his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Florida.

One of the biggest things O’Leary will focus on in his new role is implementing the new Florida Common Core Standards and the accompanying testing.

“We want to prepare our students as much as possible,” O’Leary said.

Manatee principal gets icy in ALS Challenge

Chances are you have seen the Ice Bucket Challenge sweeping across both social media and the national news.

From president politicians to movie celebrities, people all over the country are challenging their friends and family to either dump a bucket of ice water on their head or make a monetary donation to the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) foundation.

Manatee principal Carl Brown, was challenged by a member of his own faculty. Kelly Coffin, a fifthgrade teacher at Manatee Elementary, challenged the administrator during the school’s pre-planning week.

Brown, who has successfully guided Manatee Elementary since its existence in 2002, was happy to oblige.

On Sunday, Aug. 17, at a Manatee faculty and family get together, Brown fulfilled his task and soaked himself in ice water to raise awareness for ALS. “I was very proud to be part of the Ice Bucket Challenge. Having had a dear friend and teacher be stricken down with ALS, the bucket of ice water was nothing compared to what she endured,” Brown said.

Horse bronzes surpass donor’s dream a new barn and therapy center, the founder said.

“We would love to keep at least one or two, but our priority is getting to our permanent location,” said Pam Rogan, founder and executive director of Harmony Farms, which provides therapy to children and adults with developmental and physical disabilities, as well as to combat veterans with visible and invisible wounds of war.

The facility will move from its Stadium Parkway location to land donated by The Viera Company south of Wickham Road in west Viera.

The donation of the bronzes ― a rearing stallion nearly 8 feet tall, a grazing steed, a saddled mount standing next to a female rider and a smaller statue of a boy playing a guitar ― all came out of the blue, according to a board member.

“A financial professional had heard of us and sought us out,” Rose Munzenmayer said. “His client had the bronzes in storage and hoped to build an equestrian center one day, but he came to a point of decision it was not to be. While he never was able to realize his dream,

it now will serve an even greater purpose.”

Cast in Thailand, the suggested donation for each piece ranges from $5,000 to $7,000 for the horses and $900 for the boy with guitar.

The second opportunity for fall fundraising is named for a Harmony Farms client with autism who died in an accident at age 5. The family was so moved by the boy’s experience with horses and the program at Harmony Farms, that they decided to turn his short life into a legacy so that more children might be served.

“Ryan would just light up when he came around the horses. Through his relationship with them, he gained confidence in himself and learned to connect with others,” Rogan said. “This is a recurring theme with clients, whether they have developmental delays or are recovering from trauma.”

Because of the joy Ryan experienced with his Harmony Farms pony Star, the golf tournament always features a fun theme and irreverent activities, such as the Marshmallow Drive, where golfers bet on who can hit the soft sweet the farthest.

“It’s not as easy as it seems, especially for the golfers who think they have the edge,” Rogan said. “It’s as hilarious to watch as it is to play.”

The tournament entry fee is $75 per player and includes greens fees, golf cart, driving range, lunch, beverages, goody bag and prizes, with other special features to include longest drive, closest-to-the-pin, putting contest and 50/50 drawing. The shotgun start for the best-ball four-person team format is 8:30 a.m.

Viera Woman’s Club marks 10 years with special golf challenge

The Viera Woman’s Club will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a special Swing for Charity Golf Tournament and After-Party to benefit three charities special to the General Federated Women’s Club group.

The Friday, Oct. 24 event at Duran Golf Club will feature a hole-in-one contest where golfers can fire their shot from a gun to vie for a brand new golf cart, a ball drop from a helicopter for a $1,000 prize and the best golfing team will walk away with a $100 prize.

Even the worst scoring team will win — a set of crying towels.

“We wanted to make it special, really fun,” said Eloise Lynagh, second vice president

of the Viera Woman’s Club, who is co-chairing the event with Judy DeAngelis, club secretary.

“We are flying by the seat of our pants but it’s coming along great, we are getting terrific sponsorship and interest, and we are having a lot of fun in the process.”

The pair are good friends but opposites on the skills sets. Lynagh’s background is finances and DeAngelis is a former teacher. They joked around with each other while they worked on budgets and promotions for the event.

“She catches the numbers and I catch the letters,” DeAngelis said.

Charities that will benefit from the event include the Children’s Hunger Project, which provides ready-to-eat

meals for students to take home in backpacks over the weekend away from free school meals; The Haven for Children, a residential facility for abused children; and Canine Companions for Independence’s Wounded Veterans Initiative, where injured veterans receive a specially trained dog to assist with daily activities.

While the first two charities serve only Brevard, the Wounded Veterans Initiative is a national activity chosen as the primary project of the Florida president of the General Federated Women’s Club for the next two years.

Registration for the golf tournament is $70 a person and starts at 11 a.m. with a barbecue lunch. Shotgun start for the scramble format

Work starts on Wickham Road widening in Viera

Construction to widen a nearly mile-long section of Wickham Road at Interstate 95 from four to six lanes has begun. But the traffic tieups that have aggravated motorists for years likely will worsen before things get better.

The project, which will widen Wickham from the Lake Andrew Drive traffic circle to Murrell Road, is expected to be finished by the first or second quarter s of 2016, said Steve Johnson, president of The Viera y Company.

Motorists traveling along Wickham Road west of I-95 might notice steel plates and fresh asphalt on the road. That’s where work crews from Cocoa contractor Brewer Paving and Development are closing one side of the road and extending additional storm water culvert crossings, Johnson said.

At least two of four lanes of traffic will remain open throughout the day during construction, Johnson said.

“A significant portion of the work will be done at night, and the contractor will maintain access to all the businesses along the corridor during the day,” Johnson said.

When work is completed, eastbound Wickham traffic will travel beneath an overpass already added during construction that widened I-95 to six lanes.

Approaches on the east side of the roundabout also will be modified, Johnson said.

originally estimated that the project would cost more than $9 million, but Johnson said construction costs “continue to rise.”

“It’s too early in the project to know a final number,” he said.

The company is footing the

bill for the project as part of an agreement with the Brevard County Commission, which approved construction in west Viera in 2009. In 2013, the company finished acquiring the last rights of way and easements needed to proceed.

Nearly 39,000 vehicles travel the congested stretch of road each day, according to 2012 statistics from the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization.

Businesses and attractions along Wickham Road expect bottlenecks to worsen during construction, but look forward to smoother-flowing traffic once work is done.

“It’s definitely going to help the traffic,” said Thomas Salazar, owner of Prestige Motors of Viera, which expects to lose 25 to 30 feet of right of way in front of the auto dealership at 8265 N. Wickham Rd. due to road work. “Will it hurt us? Yes, it will hurt us during the

construction part of it. But I definitely think it will be an improvement to Wickham Road.”

Expansion work will have little impact at the Brevard Zoo, which is at Wickham and Murrell roads, zoo marketing director Andrea Hill said. Work will gobble up about a foot of planter area in front of the zoo’s sign, but the sign won’t have to be moved, she said. “The Viera Company has coordinated very well with us throughout the whole process,” Hill said.

The unprecedented 2004 hurricane season brought lots of stress and heartache to many Floridians. But it brought Zenaida and Carl Kotala a bundle of joy named Zophia.

The Kotalas were among Suntree and Viera parents who welcomed newborns a decade ago as Florida was being lashed by hurricanes Charley, Frances, Jeanne and Ivan. Zophia arrived right after Charley had swept across the state and just before Frances made landfall at Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County.

“It was a crazy summer, that’s for sure,” said Zenaida Kotala, a senior communications coordinator at the University of Central Florida.

As the due date for their first child neared, the couple kept their cool. Kotala was scheduled to give birth at Melbourne’s Holmes Regional Medical Center, which she had learned was built to withstand strong storms, she said.

“I wasn’t all that nervous,” she said. “And I figured that if something went horribly wrong, that I would be in the right place to get it taken care of. Looking at the calendar, I was definitely concerned, but it wasn’t something that overshadowed the birth of our first daughter.”

Days after Zophia was born, the family left their older Suntree home and headed inland to a brother’s house in Clermont to ride out Frances, Kotala said. Her mother, who had come to visit, joined

“He had a brand new house and it was supposed to be up to codes so we figured we’d be better off there,” she said.

“And actually, he sprung a leak in his roof and one of his windows cracked in one of the upstairs bedrooms.

And when we got home to Brevard we had no damage.

That was pretty funny that we evacuated out of concern as a precaution and we ended up at a place that actually was damaged by the hurricane.”

Ironically, a freak storm the following year damaged their Suntree home’s roof so badly that it had to be replaced, she said.

Baby Zophia handled the storms like a champ.

“I’m not even sure she

noticed, because she was born in the middle of a thunderstorm,” her mother recalled. “It was around 4 in the afternoon. It had been dry the whole day and then I remember as soon as the storm hit we actually delivered.”

Today, Zophia is a fifth grader who excels at dance, something she’s been doing since age 2. She now has a little brother, Robert “Bobby” David, 4. And she shows no aftereffects of having been born amid hurricanes.

“We always joked that Zophia would have a volatile personality, but she is as mellow as they come,” Kotala said. “She’s the sweetest kid.” VV

Peter Genna expects to hire three new employees at the Viera store, then assess whether more will be added as the holidays near.

“We’re going to be busy,” said the fourth-generation jeweler, a native of Palermo, Italy, whose grandfathers

were both jewelers there.

Peter Genna said the Viera store is in an ideal location because it fronts Lake Andrew Drive and because neighboring stores, which include Ulta Beauty and Total Wine & More, attract women, Genna’s core shoppers.

“T.J. Maxx was actually our next-door tenant at our existing location, so oddly enough we’re going to be located next to them again,” Peter Genna said. “They have a very strong female following that shops them, and there’s a very strong draw to that shopping center.”

For many, the salon experience is about more than a new hair color or cut.

It is about feeling special, and beautiful, visit after visit.

VG Salon, located at 7777 North Wickham Road in Suntree, opened its doors in January and strives to make each client feel his or her absolute best. The co-owner father-and-daughter team Vittorio and Natalia Grilletto say that picking the spot in Suntree was strategic.

“We were located on Post Road in Melbourne for five years, but most of our clients were from Suntree,” said Natalia Grilletto, said. “So it made sense to make the move this way.”

The salon sees around 100 clients per week, with five total stylists. Some new people wander in, but many of the appointments are set by regulars who have come to rely on the salon for everything from color correction to hair extensions.

Vittorio Grilletto started his stylist career in Italy in 1978 and recently opened VG Salon with his daughter, Natalia Grilletto.

Viera Storage Company is just another example of how business is booming in the city — and how companies are adjusting to meet resident demands.

The spacious storage facility, located at 7300 Dolina Court, is updating its look, storage options and staff to continue to exceed customer expectations, according to new property manager Julie Wininger.

She came on board in August with six years of storage property management experience.

New leasing manager Marsha Fallah started in July, also bringing along six years of industry experience.

Among the physical upgrades taking place are the addition of 36 new driveup, climate-controlled units.

The facility currently has 50 and is adding more in order to meet growing customer demand. Those units are expected to be ready by the end of October.

“Customers like that they don’t need to walk through a building, and hallways, to have a climate-controlled option,” Fallah said. “They can just drive right up.”

Earlier this year, the customer service office was remodeled and now houses many more moving day options, including packing boxes, peanuts and tape.

Viera Storage also offers moving day “bundles” that can be preordered to include everything needed at a lower price than individual item purchase.

Security measures on the property also are being upgraded to reflect the new technology available. The site already boasts 24-hour digital video surveillance and will build on the number of cameras and screens on the property this year.

A feature that Wininger thinks might be overlooked by people driving by is that in addition to storage units, the facility offers oversized parking spaces for boats, trailers and RVs. “A lot of businesses that offer parking only have 20-or 30-foot spots, which really can’t accommodate all sizes of vehicles,” she said. “We have those options, along with 40-foot spots.”

In total, Viera Storage currently has 751 storage units and around 80 parking spots. As business continues to grow, Wininger expects those numbers to continue to rise.

Former Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon was on hand Aug. 12 as the Viera VA Outpatient Clinic opened a new magnetic resonance imaging suite that bears his name.

During a presentation in the clinic lobby, Weldon, a Republican U.S. House representative from 1995 to 2009, helped unveil a copy of a plaque with the words “Dave Weldon, MD MRI Suite,” that already adorns a wall in the new suite. Weldon then took part in a ribboncutting ceremony in the MRI suite and spoke with physicians.

Weldon accepted the tribute in honor of his father, Dave Sr., who fought in the Philippines during World War II and earned two Purple Hearts.

“In my heart, yes, maybe it’s named after me, but as I look at the plaque in the years ahead, it will remind me of my father who served his country,” said Weldon, who was an Army doctor and also served in the Army Reserves before he launched his political career.

We do recognize the need for commercial recycling in order to boost our recycling rates, but there seems to be no real incentive for businesses to move in that direction. If we want businesses to embrace recycling to be able to reach the goal of a 75 percent recycling rate set for 2020, we must create more attractive options and convenient ways for them to do so. They’ve got the power; all they might need is a nudge.

If they recycle more, less will go in their regular Dumpster. Consequently, they will need a smaller container and perhaps fewer collections per week.

That might affect the total solid waste impact fee assessed by the county if, according to the impact fee resolution (number 13134), individual calculation — which uses “the annual volume of solid waste generated … calculated based upon the size and type of the container used” by the business — is applicable.

Businesses in this category would perform a tradeoff. They would pay for recycling and, in turn, save in their taxes as a result of a reduction of the solid waste impact fee assessed by the county.

For other businesses, though, recycling is an added expense and, especially for small businesses, that could be a negative factor when it comes time to decide whether or not to sign a commercial recycling contract with a hauler.

The zebras and the rhinos should become good friends. Lions, hyenas and cheetahs are the natural predators for zebras. In their natural habitat, humans unfortunately have become a predator as poaching continues to be a problem in many parts of the Africa.

Approximately 2,000 Grevy’s zebras survive in the wild grasslands of Kenya and Ethiopia in east Africa.

Adults weigh from 700 to 900 pounds and can stand as tall as 5 feet.

Many people admire the celebrities of entertainment and sports showcased on television and heralded on tabloids, and seek to be like them.

Merle Gelles prefers to pull her celebrity role models from the pages of the Bible, in particular, the woman called Dorcas.

The Dorcas Circle at Suntree United Methodist Church will host its annual Attic Treasures and Bake Sale for local charities from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, and is seeking donations of items for sale through the Friday before.

“Dorcas’ desire was to help people in need. Our goal is to people to help themselves,” said Gelles, who has been a member of Dorcas Circle for 14 years. “We like to help those in need in our local community, and we believe that if everyone helps the local community, those in need will be covered.”

“Our by-laws state that the only criteria for being a member is to be good hearted with a desire to help others in need,” said Gelles, one of about 45 members of the group. Dorcas Circle gets its authority from the Bible in Acts 36:9.

“We believe that God gives us special talent and expects us to use the talent where there is need. We try to use our hands to do a small portion of God’s

work,” Gelles said.

Treasures offered for sale include, but are not limited to, small appliances, cookware, glassware, antiques and collectibles, seasonal items, jewelry, bedding, linens, books, toys, sporting goods, pictures, mirrors, silk flowers, CDs, DVDs and more. No clothes, old TVs or electronics, old telephones, or computers will be accepted for donation or offered for sale.

The group has a reputation for fine bakers, and a large part of the attraction to the sale and the proceeds it generates comes from the bake sale. The group donates an average of $10,000 to $12,000 to various charities.

This year’s charity recipients include: • Daily Bread: A soup kitchen in Melbourne that feeds more than 200 people daily and offers

Solving Litter box problems

There is an unspoken agreement between housecats and their owners.

In exchange for food, water, shelter, an occasional cardboard box to explore, a little time with a laser pointer, and maybe a toy mouse or two (dozen), the cat agrees to use a litter box.

Unfortunately, the contract can be broken, with the feline “doing his or her business� on rugs, carpet, beds, laundry and basically anywhere besides the litter box.

In this article, I’ll review some potential reasons why a cat may stop using a litter box appropriately, and I’ll go over some options for getting things back on track.

We can divide the causes for “inappropriate elimination,�

the medical term for a cat not using the litter box, into two main groups: medical and behavioral.

There are many medical causes of inappropriate elimination, including bladder stones, urine crystals, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and diabetes.

One of the most common medical causes of inappropriate urination is feline lower urinary tract disease, or FLUTD for short. This is a complex combination of conditions that cause inflammation of the lower urinary tract. I won’t go into full detail here, as a complete discussion of FLUTD could fill several articles.

The first thing to do when your cat stops using the litter box is to schedule an appointment with your

veterinarian. A thorough physical examination and appropriate diagnostic tests can help identify potential medical problems.

There is a wide range of behavioral factors involved in a cat choosing to use the litter box. The goal is to provide the litter box setup that is ideal for your cat’s particular preferences. Now, many cats are not picky and will adapt to a wide variety of litter types and litter box arrangements. The following information is aimed at owners whose cats are avoiding the box.

The first consideration is location. Cats tend to prefer quiet, low-traffic areas.

Although convenient, a spot near the noisy garage or air conditioner may keep your cat away.

Cats may also have a

substrate preference, a preference for a particular type of litter. There are a wide range of litter types available these days, from the classic clumping clay, to corn-based, to paper pellets.

You may have to try several different types to see which your cat prefers. Studies on litter preference have shown that most cats prefer a fine clay litter.

Another factor is the box itself. In general, cats prefer a large, uncovered box.

Specifically a box that is at least 1.5 times the length of the cat has been found to be ideal. You may find that few, if any, of the litter boxes at the pet store are this big. You may need to shop around or even use a plastic storage container that is an appropriate size.

The final consideration

is stress. While some cats are obviously high-strung, or are subjected to obvious sources of stress (another pet they don’t get along with, for example), stress can also come from boredom and lack of stimulation.

Environmental enrichment in the form of toys, chasing a laser pointer, or bird feeders outside windows can actually be beneficial for cats who seem to avoid the litter box.

Your veterinarian may recommend anti-anxiety medication in certain cases when there are stressors that can’t be avoided.

“We must remember 9/11 so we don’t again become complacent, because our citizens are again the target with the new and even worse evil of ISIS and the recent beheading that is promised to be just the first of more to come.”

Masterson hopes everyone in Brevard will attend the 9/11 Memorial Service at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 at Wickham Park Pavilion on Wickham Road north of Parkway Drive in Melbourne.

It will start with a color guard and include speakers to represent firefighters, police, civilians and military members lost.

But he also knows that many, for a number of reasons, will not. Among those reasons: the aforementioned complacency, avoidance, denial, distaste for negative emotions like sorrow, rage and helplessness, he said.

Michael Moody is a member of one of three Brevard firefighter families who have experienced those last three emotions like no other. They each lost a member of their

family in the towers on 9/11.

Retired FDNY firefighter Moody of Satellite Beach lost his younger brother, Capt.

Thomas C. Moody. Retired Lt. Edward Ahearn and wife June of Palm Bay lost their son, Lt. Brian G. Ahearn. Retired Lt. Patrick Gray and wife Doreen also lost their son, firefighter James M. Gray.

“I still have not gotten over it,” Moody said, stroking the black marble slab in which his brother’s name is engraved, at the Brevard County Fire Rescue 9/11 monument in front of Station 48 in Viera.

He wears a silver bracelet that also bears his brother’s name, which he received at a Ground Zero ceremony on Sept. 11, 2011.

The slab also contains the names of Ahearn, Gray and 340 other firefighters who died that day running into the towers to pull out more civilians before the towers collapsed. With as many as 16,000 persons saved, it remains the largest civilian rescue in history. The Viera display also features a nearly 1-ton piece of WTC steel, with pieces of a concrete floor still embedded in it.
