thepublishers We all own rain boots. Because the Sun has apparently gone on strike. I’m not opposed to striking in the broad sense. I think every star in this galaxy has the right to negotiate the terms of their contract. But lets be realistic. It’s not like the Sun has to shine on us 24 hours a day. Like every worker who feels like he is going around in circles, the Sun turns its back on us every evening and shows us the moon. Parents of young children get it. Feed the little beasts. Dote on them. Wear them out. Give them baths. Nourish their developing brains with classic bedtime readalouds. But then they show you the moon. The bewitching hour, as some people would call it. Now here’s the unfortunate part to this story. I just realized I’ve explained this whole solar system sun thing upside down and backwards. It dawned on me as I spun the cream in my umpteenth cup of coffee that of course the Sun doesn’t spin around our planet. Silly, mommy. Sunny days don’t revolve around us. The truth is Earth turns its back on the brightest thing in our lives and it happens daily, like clockwork.

And every year, we drift further away from the thing that lightens our day and warms our skin. We are the ones who grow distant. Carrying a pile of bed sheets, Peyton and I slogged over to the garden to “tuck in the veggie plants” so that they didn’t get chilly. The weather man I sleep with was predicting patchy frost in the area. The next morning, I peeled off the damp sheets and breathed a little sigh of relief. The clouds had chosen to pull apart and the rain was pausing. The kids were marching around in their rain boots chasing the dogs around the shed. Behind the clouds, the Sun is always there. It never goes on strike. Enjoy! Yvette and Tommy Stafford JUNE 2016

JUNE 2016

basicnecessities By Kay Pfaltz www.basicnecessities.com www.kaypfaltz.com Leaving fear behind When a group of us traveled to Paris late-April into May, the recent Brussels bombings were front page news. And, if the November attacks in Paris seemed a memory, back in December when my group had to commit, terrorism, and the fear that accompanies — however irrational — was much in our minds. So I thank my group for doing the best thing in the face of fear and terrorism for Paris… go out and enjoy her as a tourist. Fifteen of us strolled the elegant tree-lined boulevards that paint the proverbial picture we think of as Paris. Earlier April showers brought out an abundance of soft green splashed with color as flowers smiled from the Luxembourg Gardens and beyond, and we strolled beneath the sheltering canopy of chestnut trees. Next to our hotel, the gardens offered a haven from morning till dusk. There we could pause, surrounded by beauty. There was the warmth of the sun, the scraping of metal chairs as people dragged them from one spot to the next. The sound of birdcall and

murmur of voices punctuated by shrill shrieks of children playing. And I saw more people reading than texting. Spring anywhere is magical. In Paris it’s poignant. It’s what you’ve been waiting for throughout winter’s shortened damp, gray days. The café tables begin appearing on outside terraces and the day’s first tentative light lengthens. On May Day we traded sprigs of Muguet des Bois, the Lily of the Valley, symbolic of the worker party, and considered a Porte-Bonheur (literally “happiness bringer”) or Lucky Charm. And their prophecy came true. We smiled to see streets filled with people shopping, cafés and restaurants brimming with eating, drinking, talking, laughing and, bien sûr, philosophizing Parisians. And for that brief period of time we, too, became Parisian. If we give into fear, whether over terrorism or our own personal fears, not only have the terrorists (or our neuroses) won, but also we lessen the chance of community and unity, and of bringing in happiness. Fear of terrorism, or fear of different cultures, or fear in general is no way to live. Somehow, leading full, meaningful lives purely in

2 61 SAW M I LL C REE K DR IV E

the present seems to caste away fear, and we live lives of example paving the way for others to follow. In celebration of the courage that, in many corners all over the world, is needed simply to exist, as well as the Parisians’ perseverance in the face of those who seek destruction over creation, I offer two wines that say so purely Paris: Château Bujan, Côtes de Bourg, 2014 (sustainable)– This smooth, complex Bordeaux is the kind you get when ordering Bordeaux in a café— something lucky Parisians take for granted. Served often in the French embassy in Washington D.C. Perfect with burgers, cheese, pastas, or steak. And a few hundred yards from Margaux, the wines of Château Bujan offer a tad better value. $18.99 Clos de Vigneau, Vouvray, 2015 – A wine that transcends not only categories but time. Drink it as an aperitif, the sweet with acid creating the perfect digestive stimulant; with a meal, or after a meal with blue cheese or dessert. Aromas of lime blossom greet your nose, while ripe pear, white peach and lychees greet your palate. $22

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

FUNNY FACES SERIOUS KNIVES Zack Worrell is the man behind Monolith Studio Knives. Don’t let the face fool you – he’s as sharp as his blades, though his path hasn’t been quite as straight. JUNE 2016

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2016

This man’s genealogy is as impressive as it is extensive. Including (but not limited to) a family business in the newspaper industry for fifty years as one of the largest private chains in the United States. Also, his great-grandfather was a butcher and ran a small convenient store, and his grandfather, as it so happens, was in the furniture business. “Furniture is actually where I got my start – Where I started working with my hands, I should say,” Zack clarifies, due to the fact that his professional background is actually in graphic design. “So there was always this seed for this thing that just developed weirdly, it just came full circle. I wanted to work with my hands, I did not want to work in an office anymore.” I look down at Zack’s hands. I see there’s a butterfly bandage that’s pitifully holding together a deep slice on a finger that could have, (should have), held a few stitches. His fingerprints are pronounced through-out his digits due to some unidentifiable black residue. Working with your hands ain’t pretty – it’s beautiful. Zack started concentrating on knives only after his fate was practically decided for him. “I was establishing the Monolith Studios name and we had a show, so we built a whole pile of furniture, we built a bunch of really high-end contemporary furniture,” tells Zack, sitting on a stool that’s practically lost in the midst of a candyshop-esque room filled with tools and colorful materials.

“We had also made this beautiful chopping block, and we decided we wanted a cool custom knife to go with it, so I ordered some blades and we put handles on them. We had $35,000 worth of high-end furniture and all that sold was the knives.” So he bought more blades and he sold more knives, but Zack wanted to do more than just put the pieces of the knife together. He wanted to go one step further and actually make the pieces himself. “We spent the next six months learning knife making. Buying tools slowly and carefully, new tools that were different. Just basically teaching ourselves how to do this,” says Zack. “Two and a half years later, that’s kind of where we are. We want our knives, not just to look pretty and be art, but we want them to be very high performance knives.” Zack is all that is man. And since the beginning of time, man has played with fire. “We make fully-forged steel knives, and the majority of the work we do material-extraction, where you literally just take a bar and just take it straight to the grinder.” The time devoted to making a Monolith knife can be anywhere from six hours to twenty hours of work. So Zack and his team try to go about the construction of each piece as strategically as possible. “It’s just a division of labor – It’s not one maker’s knife. There are four of us now, having had some involvement. Also, my wife, Carrie is the business manager, and without her we would not be able to do what we’re doing. She won’t take the credit but it’s true.” The cost of each knife reflects the level of craftsmanship, but once you start breaking down the man hours, it really takes a slice out of the profit.

“A fellow knife maker, a guy I really like and respect, said ‘Anybody that thinks the streets of knife making are paved with gold is going to find themselves very disappointed,’” Zack recounts. “It’s really about the culture and the passion and the desire to be involved with something that you’re making from scratch. I’m taking raw materials and I’m making a finished product.” Interested parties can find these finished products for sale at Timbercreek Market in Charlottesville. Anywhere from eight to twelve pieces could be available depending on the time of year, and custom orders are also welcomed through their website or through Facebook. “Our story is really one where we’re trying to embrace being a local business, operating using a fair amount of local and sustainable resources. And we want to have the coolest and most interesting materials you can come up with,” tells Zack. And that’s cutting right to the chase. BRL

JUNE 2016

Nicholas Melas and Jordan Luther use a bicycle powered washing machine to spin dry lettuce mix at Vine and Fig farm. The spinner is powered by bicycle as one of the experiments in sustainablilty done on the farm.

It took a guy like Tom Benevento to turn what he called “a wasteland in Harrisonburg” into an urban farmer’s paradise: the Muddy Bike Urban Market. “[We’re] linking hands with people locally and around the world through the work of mercy, social justice, and ecological healing and building a foundation of non-violence,” Tom explained. Situated off Main Street just north of the Little Grill Collective, this sprawling complex – also known as Vine and Fig – is comprised of gardens and mini-orchards, ponds and green houses. The mission is three-fold: provide a supportive home and safe place for those who have left difficult situations, like abuse, addiction, and homelessness; create a living laboratory for sustainable and just living practices; and incubate various projects

throughout the area, like community gardens in underserved areas, fruit orchards and the Refugee Garden for Congolese families at the Salvation Army, and the Market Garden, in addition to projects in progress, like the Northend Greenway bicycle and pedestrian path and Renew Rocktown, a campaign for action on climate change. Tom hatched the idea nearly seven years ago and chose an area of dilapidated houses and an abandoned parking lot, because it “put them where they were needed, where healing was needed.” Although the entire operation is an experiment in sustainment, it is the Market Garden that most often connects the community with the project and provides employment and healing for the residents.

Through holistic farming practices and the help of their partners and residents, Vine and Fig is able to provide fresh, cleanly grown, fruits and vegetables to various locations throughout the community, including the Friendly City Co-op and local restaurants, like the Little Grill Collective, Bella Luna and Bowl of Good, while supporting the development and healing of those residents who need it and providing assistance for others. The property is home to a dozen or so folks, including some of the five partners, interns, and residents. Everyone contributes to the operation in one form or another, but don’t call this a commune. In fact Benevento objects to that characterization, simply because it isn’t descriptive enough. The objective, he says, is to create “a loose knit community of people” not isolated from society, but a part of it. “We seek to create new systems and structures that help divest from destructive ones and give people something they can say ‘yes’ to.” Tom said, adding that they use the Market Garden to merge people coming from unemployable situations into the local economy, like people re-entering the workplace, refugees, and the homeless. The garden runs on a slower pace – like at the speed of a bike ride – to encourage interaction and communication among people, which Benevento believes is part of the healing process. With every push of the bike pedal – the farm’s method of choice for delivering produce – the farm fulfills its desires to minimize dependence on fossil fuels. Hand tools are used in the cultivation and harvest, taking advantage of every natural resource available to them: solar power, humanpower, and most important, willpower. Nothing goes to waste. Trees are planted in such a way as to capture the sunlight as it moves throughout the day, in addition to those planted as a high energy renewable firewood source. Various types of vegetation are chosen to provide greater nutrients to the soil, make the best use of water, and to attract insects; a great deal of variety and diversity is needed to create an urban ecosystem that mimics those found in nature. Everything is carefully planned with a specific purpose. As they set their sites on expansion, Vine and Fig is hoping the community reaps the benefits from the seeds they’re sowing. BRL

Establishing credit to qualify for life events and purchases

withMarlo

By Marlo Allen Marlo Allen is a licensed Realtor residing in Nelson County

Graduations abound this time of year. As I attend senior ceremonies and graduation events, I hear aspirations of young people who are preparing for the future. Ambitions may vary, but inevitably all of these young adults hope to move out on their own one day. If you are graduating and have the American dream of home ownership on your list to accomplish, make sure that you understand how credit can impact your ability to make purchases. Building and maintaining good credit can open a lot of doors, and poor credit can make those same doors impossible to open. Here are a few tips to help you understand and build good credit. Credit overview; a FICO score is a grade on your overall credit worthiness. Scores range from 300 to 850. Interpreting scores: 800 and up – flawless (18% of the population); 720-799 – excellent; 680-719

– good/great; 620-679 – average/fair; 580-619 – poor credit; 500-579 – bad credit; Below 500 – start rebuilding! Factors in your score: 35% – Payment history; 30% – Amounts owed; 15% – Length of credit history; 10% – New type of credit; 10% – Types of credit used. Build Credit - Become an authorized user; one of the easiest first steps in building credit is to become an authorized user on someone else’s credit card account. Verify that authorized user activity is reported to credit bureaus. If reported, this can establish credit even though the user is not the primary cardholder. To avoid issues, make sure you have an agreement with the primary cardholder as to how you are repaying the debt from your charges. Apply for a secured credit card; this is a low risk method for a banking institution to offer credit card charging privileges to people without credit. A deposit

Marlo Allen

held as collateral secures the credit card issued; the cash deposit made upfront will equal your credit limit. Make timely payments to build the desired credit. The purpose is to build enough credit to allow you to qualify for an unsecured card that requires no deposit. When the account is closed, the deposit is refunded. Find a cosigner; see if a guardian or parent will co-sign for a loan with you. A good opportunity to utilize this option may be when you buy a car. You (and the co-signer) must qualify for the loan and have sufficient income to pay back the debt. There is also a relationship of trust with the co-signer, who is responsible for the debt in the event that you don’t pay. Establish good habits; make all payments on time! If you have bills, such as utility or cell phone accounts, make sure those are paid on time too, so that nothing goes to a collection agency. Late payments or collections

on a credit report can significantly reduce the credit score and take many months/years to rebuild. If you have a credit card, keep balances low and ideally not to exceed 30% of the credit limit. Don’t open too many accounts at one time; once opened, keep accounts open to establish a longer history of credit. Periodically check your credit report for issues and/or accuracy; get a free copy of your credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com Establish and maintain your credit so that when you wish to buy, you can qualify! Your credit worthiness may impact your ability to secure a loan, as well as employment, insurance, rental, and/or other necessities of life. LOVINGSTON

[ nelson county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

A tale of TWO SEEDLINGS Ezra and Salena Hitzeman of Arrington purchased the old Lovingston Hardware building last summer with the expression, “long term project” ringing in their ears. “We got it with the idea of renovating it and hopefully getting in some tenants,” tells Ezra. “Immediately we knew it needed to be divided up into smaller spaces, and we’re working on that plan now.” Getting the basement rental-ready was one of the first projects accomplished. Soon it will serve as a Martial Arts Studio with Sensei Josh Copson, who also roasts coffee at Trager Brother’s down the street. “He’s really excited about it and he’s our first real tenant. Although technically I’m calling myself the first. My construction business, Lost Industries LLC, is going to rent an office here,” says Ezra. “We’re going to keep making improvements until we find the right tenants. In the meantime, while the space is open and available, were going to try holding more community events, try to generate getting people into Lovingston, and the idea that things can happen here.” The Seed and Plant Swap was actually Salena’s idea, though she says her friend Jennifer Corbett helped remind her and execute the project. continued on page 28

“It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Salena explains. “It’s something that Lovingston really needs, more commerce. I think there is a demand for it, an outlet for local farmers for their meats and produce on this side of town. It’s a great community and I love it more and more.” While Ezra runs his construction business, Salena cares for their son, Rowan and also runs their farm in Arrington. “I’m mostly self-taught. I had a gardening business when I lived in Oregon in my 20’s.” She says, “It’s taken a lot of learning to figure out how to farm here compared to Oregon. It’s been a steep learning curve”. Ezra’s friend, Alicia Tarr, who drove all the way from D.C. to show her support at the event, actually seeks the challenge of a varied plant culture. “I really like gardening and it is exciting to see a diverse type of plant, things that are sometimes regional, which helps maintain a better seed bank,” tells Tarr. Whether they’ve driven hundreds of miles, or they just happen to by driving by, Ezra and Salena are excited about the new activity that can be found on their side of the street. And they’re not the only ones. “A lot of people stop by in the area and are curious about what’s going on, they’re happy to see something happening. Maybe we’ll do a harvest swap at the end of the season,” Ezra suggests. “There’s a lot of potential here and in Lovingston in general.” BRL

WAYNESBORO

[ augusta county ]

STORY & PHOTOGRAPHY by MARCIE GATES

Fill your cup and

GIDDYUP Yes, there’s a new brewery in the area. No, it isn’t like the others. Craig Nargi, owner and operations manager made sure of that. Stable Craft Brewing may technically be located in Waynesboro, but it’s no part of town I had ever seen before. Drive just far enough and the commercial property starts turning into rolling farmland fit for postcards. You’ll pass a lot of barns along the way. Just make sure you stop at the one that’s selling beer. “Can’t have horses or grow large crops on Main Street,” says Craig. “Horses live in pretty places.” That’s right, he said horses – including the most massive Clydesdale-Draft mix I’ve ever laid ogling eyes on. “My wife has had horses her entire life. We bought the farm to have the family together. And I chose this

30

Blue Ridge LIFE

JUNE 2016

farm because it is actually easy to get to, between two rural urban areas. The farm itself is a calling card with the Blue Ridge Mountains framing the view and picturesque rolling crop lands.” Rewind a bit to life before the farm and brewery. Craig was twenty years deep in the food and hospitality industry with two restaurants and a traveling catering business. The term, “burnt-out” only begins to cover it. “I had hit the wall,” admits Craig. “I set out to find a place to offer catering services in a unique venue. I found Waynesboro Stables – a colossal stable/barn with 42 stalls and multiple paddocks. This barn had a section that was large enough to house social gatherings and had the most amazing views. Game on!”

Craig bought the farm in 2006, took a deep breath and started over. After three years of reconstruction and planning, the new and improved Hermitage Hill Farm & Stables was ready to go. Today, not only is there a brewery and a Draft Room on the premises, Stable Craft also offers the Saddleback Room for fully catered weddings, private events and parties of any kind. “On one end of my barn we have our tasting room separated by glass and on the other we have our horses. It doesn’t get any more authentic,” Craig explains. “If you came for beer and get to see the brew process, the hops growing, harvesting all while drinking that beer, it just says we care and we want you to see how we do it.” And the man you’re going to see actually doing it, Head Brewer, Christopher Fann, who was selected from a highly qualified and competitive collection of applicants. “We set out to find the working brewer. The person that was knee deep in the grains, soaked in beer and wasn’t afraid of hard work. We were looking for the person that separated themselves.”

ADVERTORIAL

Guns, the law, and you. By Daniel L. Rutherford Rutherford Law Group, PC

Firearms have always been a part of life along the Blue Ridge. People of all stripes use them for hunting, recreation, safety, even collecting, and have done so for generations. But don’t let familiarity with firearms make you forget that they are heavily regulated items. Firearm laws today are stricter and more specific than ever, and both Virginia and Federal laws apply. Severe penalties can result if you violate relevant rules regarding a firearm. Be sure you know the following basic laws before you buy, sell, or use a firearm: Buying a firearm: You must be 18 or older to purchase a rifle, shotgun, or other long gun, and 21 or older to purchase a handgun. These ages apply to ammunition purchases also. No permits are required to buy any type of firearm, though a background check may be necessary. Felons, those declared legally incapacitated, and anyone subject to a protective order may not purchase a firearm. Firearms do not need to be registered with the Commonwealth unless they are “machine guns,” which means any gun that fires more than one round with a single trigger pull.

Displaying a solid work ethic and positive attitude were just a couple of Chris’s attributes that landed him the job. Previous work experience at Brothers Craft Brewing in Harrisonburg didn’t hurt his resumé either. The man also looks pretty snazzy in a bow tie. “What better day for it than Derby Day? It worked out as well as I had family coming out and they all got dressed up,” says Chris, who stepped away from the tanks and got behind the bar for their Derby Day event. “I enjoy getting in the taproom to do anything from pouring to greeting customers, and everything in between. Luckily we have a great staff in place and all I had to worry about was pouring for the day.” The Draft Room was full to each corner of the stables with excited guests all dressed to the nines to watch the races. Men adorned in pastel pants, sport coats and coordinating ties. Women decked in high heels, polka-dotted dresses and extravagant hats. And me, wearing fraying jean shorts, green Hunter rain boots and a felt hat that makes me feel like Indiana Jones – You could say I was channeling the role of the ranch hand. Craig and I have both accepted the heavy weight of loving our jobs. “When you have a brewery with horses is it really work?” asks Craig. “Sure it can test you, but if you consciously develop a project like this, a one of a kind, there is no road map, there is no owner’s manual to refer to. You build your vision and nurture it with the very best people and the passion of your career goals.” Cheers to that. BRL

Selling a firearm: Virginia allows firearms to be sold by licensed dealers, private persons, and by consignment at gun shows. Sellers must not sell firearms to underage persons. Licensed dealers must conduct background checks. Sales should always be recorded in writing. Using a firearm: No one under 18 may possess a handgun unless he/she is (i) with a parent and (ii) hunting or at a gun range. Rifles may be possessed at any age. Firearms may not be shot in dwellings, public places, or school zones. They may not be fired from a vehicle, or shot in any way that would endanger another person. Firearms may not be held or shown in any threatening manner. No one may use a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or any narcotic drug. Open Carry: In Virginia, any legal firearm may be openly carried in public—in a visible holster, for example—except in certain areas, such as school zones, courthouses, and in dense cities like Richmond and Virginia Beach. No permit is needed to open carry. Firearms may be brought into stores, restaurants, and other establishments open to the public, though the owners of those places may prevent you from doing so if they wish. Concealed Carry: If you want to carry a firearm in public but keep it hidden from view, you need a concealed carry permit. To get a permit you must be 21 or older, take a qualified safety course, fill out an application and pay a fee up to $50 at the Circuit Court in the city or county where you live. Applications must be approved by the court. Firearms in cars: Any legally possessed firearm may be transported in a car if it is unloaded and secured in a compartment of the vehicle, such as a glove box or trunk. Otherwise, this counts as “concealed weapon” and a concealed carry permit is required. This is just a general outline of applicable firearm laws in Virginia, and there are many exceptions. This advertorial should not be understood as legal advice. Your uses of firearms may involve other legal considerations. Lastly, let’s all make sure our firearms are used carefully!

embracetheadventure By Woody Elliott woodye@blueridgelife.com #EmbraceTheAdventure

Adventures Awaitin’ Over the many years of putting on trail running and mountain biking adventures around the area, the one thing I could always count on was Mother Nature’s solid curve balls. We had many solid followers – we call them Repeat Offenders – who knew that there would always be an adventure. Whether it be the trails, the weather or the selection of beer waiting at the finish. Our Adventure Triathlon down at James River State Park this year had perfect conditions. The day preceding the race saw storms scattered across the state to keep us on our toes. If you remember this time last year, the James River was raging at over 12,000 cfs (7k cfs is the redzone for Bent Creek gauge) and we had to go to our Run, Bike, Run format. This year, race day was perfect. Temps and trails were right on and the river actually came in low at 2,000 cfs.

With the James being low flow, we expected racers to come in about 1:30 or more. No, we were shocked that the fast ones were through the 7 mile kayak leg in 1:08! It’s such a fun kayak from Bent Creek to the James River State Park’s Canoe Landing. The bike segment included new mountain bike specific trails that ended up being a little soft with the light showers but times for the 8 mile course for the fast ones was 1:10. So still rockin’’ fast! The trail run was totally unaffected by weather with times in the mid 20 minutes for the 3 mile course. Our 2016 winners : Solo WomenCarrie Parker (2:49:40), Solo Men (2:49:08) and Team Adventure PAK (2:50:04). The day went great and we had Loose Shoe Brewing from Amherst supply our post-race beverages. If you are ever down in Amherst, stop by and give them a try. They

have a patio out back to take in our ever-changing weather. Local Volunteer Fire & Rescue members from Gladstone were on hand taking care of recharging our participants. James River State Park once again provided a great venue and staff for the event. We still have one event left and that is our Fall Festival and Night Run 5k in October. Come on out and take in the fall festivities but we have a lot to do before then. Are you worthy? The Happy Mutant Adventure Races (www. thehappymutant.com) is your chance to take an adventure through Nelson, Amherst and Buckingham Counties by foot, bike and boat. Take on their 300 mile/72 Hour or 100 mile/24 Hour event. We are sure you will find some of the checkpoints entertaining! Wintergreen’s Trail & Tread Series with Bold Rock Hard Cider is in full swing. We just had our first race weekend with the Cliffhanger Challenge. There are still lots of opportu-

nities for racing and winning some awesome prizes. Cliffhanger Challenge – Memorial day weekend – DONE (Report coming soon) Summers End Fest – Labor Day weekend. Music, F&B, and Vendors Trail Rodeo – Columbus Day weekend. Exciting new event. Details to come for this stage race. Two down and one to go out at James River State Park: www.AdventuresontheJames.com
October 15th – Fall Festival and night time 5K trail run

We have incredible adventures right out our front door around here. Don’t fret over the weather. Get your gear and get out there. Need some gear? Rockfish Gap Outfitters are right down the trail. Grab your map, shoes, gloves, water bottle, bike, kayak or whatever floats your boat and GET OUT THERE!

The Landscape Pod Long driveways and extensive areas beyond the lawn present a real dilemma for the homeowner regarding design. Beyond the overused tree lined driveway, other concepts can be explored so as to dovetail the lawn and house planting and those large expanses of space, often times extending to a state road or a neighbor’s property. By employing landscape pods or intermittent planted areas, one can tame the wild while still allowing the native fauna to remain as a canvas for some creative areas of interest. Break out your favorite specimen list – each of these pods needs a star! Landscape pods are simply small landscaped areas over a large space that does not connect to any other formally planted area by form, design or plant. These pods are typically rather small in size, are numerous along an extensive area, have multiple species planted in the area, offer a hardscape or focal point (rock, birdhouse, column, etc.) and almost certainly require a star specimen as the “main event.” Once a group of pods are finished along a drive, they should appear random and with a minimum of 20-30 feet between each group of plants. Their conception is simple – waves of intermittent eye candy over a large expanse of space are visually more stimulating than a continuous barrage of plants in that same area. Aside from the visual impact, pods are a hell of a lot easier to care for than an area that has continuous landscaping over an extended area since the concentration allows for care in small areas while allowing the larger area to remain largely untouched. A pod’s ingredients are rather simple – one specimen plant offering a unique form, texture or color. Found in this group are one-of-a-kind specimens like Montgomery or Globosa Spruce, Nootkanensis Chamaecyparis, Japanese Umbrella Pine, Japanese Maples or other unique specimens. More often

than not, one hardscape is required to add a strong form to your pod. This can come in the form of a large rock (or group thereof), a stone column, a birdhouse, an old, metal wagon wheel, a bench, etc. The important part is just to include something that strongly focuses the eye to the pod while the plants in the same area are more like the support cast for this item. An evergreen backbone either in the back or in the immediate front offer strong color in all 4 seasons and hold the pod together from one end to the other. These plants are at least three in number and are largely in a sweep or triangular pattern and consist of boxwoods, laurels, Osmanthus, groundcovers (like Ivy), or other broadleaf or needle evergreens. Finally is the fill. The fill can be any perennial or shrubs that are used to add color, texture and variety to your area. In sunny locations, a large expanse of seeded wildflowers, like a drifting meadow, can be used as a stunning filler, offering color from late spring to frost. Preparation of your area requires the removal of all plants in that area either by digging out the roots or using other chemical agents to kill them. Soil preparation should be the same as areas closer to your home including the spading, tilling and addition of soil amendments like topsoil, peat moss, compost, gypsum and chicken litter (or other organic fertilizers) to the site and tilling them in. Remember, this area is typically far away from the home and poor soil preparation will lead to greater plant loss since watering is much more difficult. Mulch should be applied upon completion and reapplied every 2nd or 3rd year or as needed to allow your plants to thrive and remain largely in zero competition from weedy species. In the case of a wildflower meadow, no mulch is needed (and is actually not permitted) in this immediate area.

asktheDr. By Dr. Steve Schmitz Afton Family Medicine Dear Dr. Steve, What is cancer? Cancer may be my least favorite word. It is often the most feared thing on a patient’s mind when he or she comes to see me with unusual symptoms. It is something that affects a lot of people. Huge amounts of money, time, and brain power are used to try to understand how to treat cancer. But what exactly is it? That is a good question — let’s try to shed some light on what cancer is. Cancer is a general term given to a large collection of diseases. The thing all these diseases all have in common is abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth that destroys healthy parts of the body. Normally the trillions of cells that make up a human body grow and divide as the body needs them to and then die when they are old or broken. This process is controlled by our genetic code – our genes. Genes can be changed by things they are exposed to in the environment (like tobacco smoke) or they can be inherited from our parents in an abnormal state (which is why some cancers If you are ready for a faster internet connection, you are ready for Exede Broadband.

Discover Why run in families). When the genes are changed sometimes they allow certain cells to grow uncontrolled. As those cells grow like wildfire, they can form a tumor in an organ, or clog the blood with abnormal cells. As the disease progresses, the abnormal cells can spread to nearby body parts, or even travel through the blood to far off body parts. Ultimately, as we all know, if this process goes on unchecked it can be a killer. Thankfully modern medicine does have treatments and cures for many cancers. As a rule, when caught early, there is a much better chance of having a good treatment for cancer. That is why we have certain screening tests. A good screening test can catch a cancer before there are symptoms, when it is much easier to treat. If you have not done so recently, it is a good idea to visit your doctor to discuss what cancer screening tests may be appropriate for you.
