Letter from the Editor

O

ur government has been a center of conversation for the past few months. That may be because of the election, but it is also because of our government’s abuse of power. People across the world have been speaking out about our country's injustices through the course of the pandemic. People have been speaking out on social media but also to their peers.

In this issue, we touch on just how people should go about having those conversations. Alysha Wallace and I wrote “Making Peaceful Distruction” to explore the idea of peaceful conversation. We strived to create the key factors to keep a conversation going while also keeping it civil.

Engaging in civil discourse at this time can be difficult, but Kennedy Ogden we tried to make it easier.

Aside from the struggles of our nation we wanted to create a section on our issue that students could relate to. We have curated reviews of games, movies and pizza. What else describes being a teenager more than those three things? Carys Williams also goes in-depth into one of her favorite games in “Slime Rancher is a Jiggly Delight.” She explains the accessibility of this game and all of its quirks.

We have also chosen to shed light on a few Granville students who have impressed their peers and the BluePrints staff, one of them being senior Tyler Neidermeyer.

Neidermeyer has been a part of the basketball program all through high school. He has been an exemplary athlete on and off the court. Whit Miller goes into detail about Neidermeyer's experiences in “Aiming For The Top.” Lastly, Abigail Tracy Interviewed one of her close friends senior Liz Fruechtnicht, an up-and-coming photographer with great talent. All of the students featured in this issue have done the best they can with the pandemic booming around them, so we decided to honor them in the best way possible.

My mission this year as editor-in-chief is to create a community with our magazine.

This issue is meant to bring people together in a time where being uncomfortable is common. I encourage you to share the messages we have discussed in this issue and hopefully use them to reflect upon yourself. It is important to me, as well as the BluePrints staff, that journalism is a way to share the good of the world rather than force a personal agenda. If you end up loving the issue or want to become a part of the BluePrints community, reach out to us. We’re always looking for another student voice at Granville High School.

STAFF EDITORIAL t is not hard to detail just how opinionated this generation can be.

Whether it be about politics or other aspects punching themselves into the mainstream media, everyone is going to have an opinion. And, of course, opinions don't come without backlash from others who have different opinions.

Politics is the most talked about subject, and it can't be said that is was for the better. Disagreeing with another's opinion can cause a gap within any relationship depending on the extent of argument. Sometimes even stating yourself as a either a Liberal or Conservative can cause tension in the public space.

But what about the other factors?

What other topics must be reprehended, restrained and filtered with respectful speaking? There are many options to choose from especially when it comes to religion. Religon and politics are the staple and key points of argumentive debate. Religion works in the same fashion as the two-party political system in the way that many people will base their ideas and morals off of their religion. This is fine and well, but what happens if it

gets out of control? What would happen when somone does something that is a far cry from your beliefs and ideals?

Fortunately, this can be avoided. With the right initiative and mannerism, it is easy to keep self control. It is easy to resist the urge to fight and to aggressivly act. Whenever you feel that the person you are exchanging conversation with is speaking boldly on a topic you both differ in views in, it is very easy to lose control and argue with them. This can lead to a major gap in a friendship that can be avoided with the use of two simple solutions.

First, you can consider agreeance .

Admit to understanding their view and coming to terms. You may not truly like what they have said, but is best thing you could do.

Secondly, you can choose to walk away. If what this person is saying is too much for you to handle, then it could be best to stop listening to them and to walk away once the conversation is over. This solution could better your emotional stability and prevent you from lashing out towards your assailant.

BY WHIT MILLER The athletic program has always been held to high standards and this year's athletes have exceeded expectations. The Indoor Track team brought home multiple state championships. Shortly after the Competition Cheer team continued their dominance with another state championship led by the senior class. In wrestling Douglas Terry made the state tournament to cap off an amazing career. The girls basketball team brought home their first district championship in over two decades. Overall, the Blue Aces' winning tradition has been carried on as the championship pedigree and success continues to grow.

This year there are certian things expected for testing, like COVID-19 accommodations; however, the College Board will not be making any accommodations for the pandemic. The fee for AP tests has not been waived or decreased. Students will also not be able to return to previous questions while taking the test. The Ohio End of Course Exams will also continue as planned.

BY KENNEDY OGDEN Within the past few years, the number of mass shootings has dramatically increased.

This year alone there have been 102 shootings. There have been few actions taken against these mass shootings in the past few months. Georgia is one of the few states that have reacted to the shootings. After 8 Asian women were killed Georgia, encated three bills. Protecting people of all races and ages is something that should be upheld by the people of America and the government.

SENIOR RESEARCH

BY ABIGAIL TRACY Seniors just checked one of their last big project off of their list. We began prepping for the research paper in the first quarter, reading and annotating in order to set the foundation for their paper. The process set sail full force the week of Feb. 22 and students were given three weeks to write and complete the paper. With the guidance of the senior English teachers, seniors were able to complete their last research paper of their high school career and breathe a sigh of relief, for this was their last essay of the year.

Although we do not know all of the details going around, a few things are for certain: 1. We are having a prom for both juniors and seniors, 2. It will be outside at Brynn Du, and 3. It is going to take place in mid-April. While excitement and tension arise from the uncertainty of this event, people are making plans very quickly. Both ladies and gentlemen are panicking about what to wear. We are grateful that our prom will take place at all and that it will be safe to attend and cannot wait to dance!

All school staff should get vaccinated

T

hroughout the course of the Covid-19 pandemic, schools across the United States have been eagerly awaiting a vaccine to support the prospect of safely reopening. Granville Sophie Ehrman Schools staff is going to have the opportunity to receive the Covid-19 vaccine in the coming months.

In a survey taken in the beginning of the school year, between 80-90% of school staff stated that they’d be interested in getting the vaccine. For the sake of the student body, all school staff should get vaccinated. The majority of the student body will not have the opportunity to be vaccinated for an uncertain amount of time even if they really wanted to.

According to the Ohio Department of Health website, “the speed at which Ohio will move through the phases depends on the number of vaccines available.”

Given that the timeline is wholly unknown, all school staff should get vaccinated to help ensure the safety of our schools. Skeptics will say it is a personal choice. People are not mandated to get the flu shot, so why should they have to get the coronavirus vaccine?

Many people are also skeptical for various other reasons such as not knowing what’s in the vaccine or concern about the quick timeline of development and production. All of these concerns have already been debunked.

Covid-19 is clearly not like the flu at all. Generally, the U.S. death toll from the flu is somewhere between 34,000 and 43,000 annually, according to the CDC. Covid-19 has killed over 429,000 Americans in less than a year. They are not similar.

As for not knowing what’s in it, people normally do not know exactly what’s in the vaccines they are receiving. If someone really wanted to know, it’s public information which is just a quick Google search away. The rapid development timeline is not concerning since

the speed can be attributed to the fact that this vaccine has been a worldwide effort for the past year in its entirety.

The whole point was to get a vaccine developed quickly and efficiently. The fact that people are now recoiling from this highly anticipated medial miracle is astounding.

If the staff cared for the student body as much as they say they do, they would get vaccinated. There is absolutely no sound reason not to get vaccinated. The vaccines have been thoroughly tested, approved and proven to be effective.

Every other argument is threaded with blatant lies and ignorant oversights. Any opposition completely ignores science.

No wild conspiracy theory should get in the way of maintaining the health and well-being of everyone inside Granville Schools.

It is going to take everyone to end this pandemic. Especially now, it is important to check news sources for extreme bias to combat the consumption and spread of false information. It’s time to trust science. It’s time to have empathy.

It is okay to feel lazy during pandemic

D

uring this pandemic, people feel like they have an obligation to be productive and take up new hobbies, but that is not the case. People should Kennedy Ogden not feel guilty for doing less during a pandemic.

There has been a new wave of posts on social media about the various hobbies people have picked but during the pandemic like cooking, sewing, home projects and more. This new wave of productivity creates a vicious cycle for those who are feeling a lack of motivation during this time.

In the population of people experiencing mental health struggles, they may feel it is hard to start something new.

Some may argue that this is the most time people will have to themselves so people should take advantage of it. The

common issue with this statement is that not all people are in the same headspace or financial situation For this reason, people may not have enough resources to have a new outlet.

The pandemic has created a multitude of issues from financial struggles to a variety of mental health struggles. It is hard for some people to immerse themselves in new hobbies because of the toll the pandemic has created for people from all walks of life. It is important for people with mental heath issues to take priority of themselves.

Another reason why being “lazy” in this pandemic is acceptable is that this time period has probably been the most stressful. Seeing the constant increase in deaths and trying to be safe is stressful. Adapting to a new way of life can be daunting, especially one that no one has experienced before. All of the new factors of the pandemic allow for a stressful atmosphere.

One thing that could majorly de-

crease the stress of being “lazy” during a pandemic is keeping our opinions to ourselves. There is no way of knowing what people are going through in this pandemic, so the best solution is to not bring it up. Keeping the judgment out of the pandemic can make the transition easier by bringing people together. People need to feel safe in their social space because the world around them may not feel that way.

Another way to reduce the guilt of feeling “lazy” during the pandemic is to talk to others in a non-judgemental way.

This means hearing and acknowledging the feelings that others are trying to talk about.

Having sympathy and being mindful of others' situations should be as important as the golden rule, especially in 2021.

Making accommodations for people this year is important to keeping life enjoyable. Keeping the social atmosphere open and safe is important in a time of isolation.

Granville begins Covid-19 vaccinations Health care workers, teachers and people aged 80 and up got vaccine first

BY SOPHIE EHRMAN ranville has begun the complicated process of Covid-19 vaccine distribution throughout the community. After many months of wondering, residents and employees are finally being vaccinated. The first available phase, phase 1-B, included lower hierarchy healthcare workers, educators and people over the age of 80.

Many staff members began the vaccination process on Feb. 12. Granville teachers, administrators and staff were vaccinated with thousands of other Licking County educators at the Reese Center at The Ohio State University at Newark.

They received a second vaccine on Mar. 12.

Principal Matt Durst stated that there was a preliminary interest survey taken earlier this school year in which 80-90% of staff stated that they’d be interested in getting vaccinated.

Senior living facilities within the Granville community began the process of vaccination back in mid January.

were vaccinated as of Jan. 13, according to senior Dilnoza Khuseynova, who works as a server at Middleton. Khuseynova received the vaccination shortly after that. As of now, a large majority of

residents have been fully vaccinated. As a result of this, limited in-room family visits are now allowed within the facility, according to Khuseynova.

Phase 1-C went into effect as of Mar. 4. According to the Ohio Department of Health, this phase includes those who occupy positions in childcare services, funeral services, and law enforcement and correction services. It also includes those with additional medical conditions that may increase their risk of severe illness due to Covid-19.

Ohio residents sixteen and up may begin receiving the vaccine starting on Mar. 29. This has given way to a new sense of hope within the high school community.

“I plan on getting the vaccine as soon as it’s available,” senior Megan Mazik stated. She made it clear that she sees this as an opportunity to contribute to widespread change and take one step closer to achieving normality once again.

It’s safe to say much of the student body feels the same way, carrying a renewed sense of hope with them as they look toward the future.

BY MADDIE BARKER ne of the devastating effects of Covid-19 is the loss of sense of community, as exemplified by the cancellation of events. In years past, Granville high school has had a rich tradition of hosting fun events like plays and musicals, concerts, clubs and of course, prom and graduation.

Unfortunately, due to public safety concerns, the high school has had to place safety measures on most extracurricular activities, which can make it more difficult for students to participate in these events, or even cause fears about the cancellation of important dates like graduation and prom.

“I am currently sitting down with the senior prom president and there will be new information throughout the next two and a half months,” Principal Matt Durst said.

Durst also is already planning for a different graduation.

“We are working toward a traditional graduation, while also staying safe,” Durst said. He added that senior events this year will be “very unique and exceptional, with lots of new ideas to come.”

Jim Reding, the AP Environmental Science teacher, and the adviser of the Envirothon Club had to cancel last year’s event due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and completely rework the competition this year.

“We will, of course, have to follow the regulations on gathering, wear our masks, and have limited guest speakers,” Reding said.

However, he is still optimistic about this year’s events.

“Before Covid, our school did great in the Envirothon competitions and it has opened a lot of doors, but everything is

different his year. We will be doing mostly Zoom meetings.”

However, Envirothon isn’t the only club to have been affected by the pandemic; Drama and Choir got hit especially hard.

“The drama department is doing a completely online production over Zoom,” said sophomore Lilly Rees, a member of the drama department. "This definitely makes it more difficult to perform due to internet and connectivity issues. A good thing, though, is that we don’t have contact with anyone.”

Despite all difficulties, Durst still wants students to get as “normal” a year as he can give us. He and the Granville staff members have all been hard at work trying to make life a little bit easier for everyone attending Granville High School.

Counselors check in on online students School counselors are trying their best to ensure that remote learners are getting everything they need this year

BY ALYSHA WALLACE remote student logs onto Schoology for their class day only to realize that they have a message from their school counselor. The student begins to grow worried that they might have forgotten something, maybe a homework assignment or even a meeting. The student opens the message only to find that their counselor was just checking in on them.

They heave a sigh of relief and send a reply to their counselor about how they are a bit stressed about their school work and it seems harder when they are online. Their counselor sends back a response and lets the student know that they can message them anytime they have any questions and need help with managing their workload, scheduling and anything about colleges.

This is the reality of what counselors have to do in order to reach out to their remote students. Even though it is different, our school counselors are still trying their best to make sure that their students are getting the help and resources that they need.

“Counselors are usually more on the 'front lines' because we are physically in the building and able to respond immediately," school counselor Elizabeth Adams said. "The situation this year with online students means that we are a bit less of the first responders.”

School counselors have to come up with different ways to reach out to their students and although it’s not an ideal situation, our counselors are making it work to the best of their ability.

“Pre-Covid, when I wanted to touch base with a student, I could just call down from study hall, I now have to Schoology message them which they may or may not respond to.” school counselor Brandi Cosgrove said.

Along with touching base with their students and communicating with them through Schoology, counselors have found a way to have meetings with their online students through Zoom.

of course, but thankfully with Zoom I am still able to meet with a student online," Adams said. "I do feel bad though, because I know that remote learners are already on Zoom for so many hours every single day, that I know it's a lot to ask to have yet another meeting over Zoom.

It's a lot of camera time and I know it's important to take a break!”

School counselors do so much for students and by having both remote learners and in-school students, their workload looks slightly different.

“It definitely has created even more emails and Schoology messages to keep up with,” Adams said. “Just like everyone else, I feel tied to my computer now more than ever before. At the beginning of the year, it was tedious to look through all of the class rosters and make sure that no class was too full of in-person learners based on social distancing requirements.”

Not only are counselors trying to make sure that everyone is doing well in school and checking up on their students, they also are trying to get things ready for next year with scheduling.

“I didn’t really know what exact classes I wanted to take next year that would allow me to further my education in what I wanted to got to college for, but I met up with Mrs. Cosgrove and she really helped me with finding out what my course of action will be for my next year’s classes,” said sophomore Sydney Werner.

Most years the school counselors will go to the government classes and teach a College 101 curriculum to give the juniors a better understanding of how to apply to colleges and universities. This year, due to Covid, they are unable to do that especially for their remote learners, so they put all of the curriculum in a folder in Schoology to allow students to have direct access to it.

“We have made all materials for College 101 available through Schoology, we have been conducting individual meetings with students through zoom, and we have created an electronic transcript request form for our seniors that are remote but are still applying to college,” said school counselor Cody Masters.

“Like everyone in this pandemic, we are trying our best.”

BY KENNEDY OGDEN & ALYSHA WALLACE n the last week, a student posted a picture to social media regarding a political topic. The post included a picture of the student next to President Biden, claiming support for him. In the comments of that post, there were many adoring comments about the student, but within those comments, there were negative ones. Other students were commenting things like “Ew, how could you support that lier?” This prompted many arguments within the comments.

Some people commented in solidarity with the student who posted the content but others did not.Oftentimes people are told not to bring up politics in hopes of avoiding conflict. It has become popular for younger generations to share their opinions in hopes of changing society.

Unfortunately, with the divide in our country, civil discourse has become very challenging. Although politics are a hard conversation for some, there are ways to express one’s voice politely and respectfully.

FIND THE FACTS Misinformation causes much disagreement. It is important to fact-check the information before you put it out, according to sophomore Meghan Penn. She advises people to read primary sources when forming political opinions.

“Misinformation is dangerous and the only way to prevent its spread is to fact check with multiple sources and stay away from extremely biased outlets,” Penn said. “Especially with politics, there will most likely be an official statement made by trusted government officials based on what’s happening.”

Although doing research is a big part of knowing what is accurate in a conversation, looking at reliable sources is also an asset. Looking at one unreliable source is not enough to get your opinion across according to social studies and English teacher Dana Decker.

“Do your research from reliable sources, more than one source. Look for holes in the research,” Decker said.

Researching topics not only strengthens the stance one takes but it also makes it easier for people new to politics.

It allows for them to not spread the misinformation if they read it from a reliable source that they see or hear.

“Today, anyone on the internet can present something as a fact. It is up to individuals to put work into their research before forming an opinion on a topic,” social studies teacher Jeremy Hopping said.

KEEP CALM AND LISTEN Demeanor plays a large role in getting people to engage in a conversation, especially one that involves politics.

Going into a conversation with an intent to argue will lead to an unproductive conversation.

“Starting from a position of humility and intellectual curiosity rather than

from a desire to make a point can put you in the right frame of mind to express your opinions respectfully,” Hopping said. “You have to be willing to accept that they are called political opinions for a reason” Aside from keeping a calm demeanor during a tough conversation, listening to others’ opinions plays a key role in the discussion.

“Consider what you are hearing the other person say,” Decker said. “Even though you have different ideas, what do you find that you both agree with?

Know your FIRST AMENDMENT rights er person. In this situation, it is important to not get discouraged. There are always shifts in the political climate, and that can affect political opinions. The importance is to listen and not argue, it only deepens the divide.

DON'T TRUST YOUR FEED Speaking out about political issues via social media has become more common since the killing of Gorge Floyd. The convenience of social media has made it increasingly easier to talk about political antics.

The downside to politics on social media is that the conversation is very often one-sided. Most often, there is a post for one side of the argument but there is never a view-point for the other side.

“Social media makes it much easier to speak/write, instead of listening,” Decker said. “If you want to have a real political discussion, you should listen at least as much as you speak.”

Another downside that is at large is the inaccuracy of some political-type posts.

Social media companies tend to “customize” feeds to the user’s liking. They use information from user activity to push certain genres of posts. These could be posts that are related to others that have inaccurate facts.

There is constant innovation going on within society because of difficult conversations. There are ways to remain civil while still exercising the First Amendment rights. Continue to be passionate about issues within society but remember that the First Amendment does not guarantee citizens the right to say anything they want, whenever they want.

Winter Sports Plow Forward

BY WHIT MILLER he athletic program has remained strong through the winter despite the resurgence of the Coronavirus threats. All Winter sports teams have shown resiliency and perserverance through these unorthodox times as they continue the Blue Aces' winning tradition.

All of our teams have advanced into the post season of their respective sports and made deep runs that brought championships and great success back to Granville.

Boys Basketball The boys basketball team continued their winning ways and finished with a 14-6 record and a 4-2 conference record. The team was led by an experienced and strong senior class highlighted by Jaden Rudder who was a consistently high scorer. The team finished their season with two big wins to close out the regular season before a tough loss in the tournament against South HS.

Girls Basketball Much like the boys program, the girls program has continued in their winning ways with a strong season.

The team had an outstanding 24-1 record including a big win over previously unbeaten Bishop Hartley. The team had a very balanced scoring attack headed by sophomore Ella Wigal. The team also won the first district championship since 1994.

Wrestling Granville wrestling persevered through a difficult season that has seen many roadblocks caused by Covid-19. The team was led by seniors Douglas Terry and Stephen Chang. When the regular season winded down, the team made a push in the playoffs led by Senior Douglas Terry who made it to the state semifinals.

Indoor Track Indoor track continued their perrenial success by sending several athletes to states. The team finished a

great year by bringing home championships in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays.

Swimming Led by seniors Mason White and Olivia Beckett, both the boys and the girls swimming teams had strong seasons and advanced several swimmers to the state meet where they finished 16th in the 400m Medley Relay and 13th in the backstroke, where Graham Mayberry set a school record.

Competition Cheer The team was led by a very strong and experienced senior class that has had a ton of success in their high school careers. The team capped off another great season with a state title.

Bowling The Bowling team was led this year by five talented seniors who have contributed to another strong year. Both the boys and girls advanced to the District Championship tournament in a great playoff run.

Senior Tyler Niedermeyer has been a major piece of the basketball team for his whole high school career. He has contributed on and off the court in an effort to uphold the high standard of the Granville Athletics Program.

A: The good thing about returning is that it is harder to get quarantined now and we feel a lot safer and do not have to worry about people missing games.

Q: How has Covid-19 impacted the season so far?

A: Covid has made this season really weird. We have had to cancel many games and wearing a mask at practice is something that I never thought I'd have to do. Overall, it hasn't been a normal season, but we still get to play basketball and that's the most important thing.

Q:How has the team shown resilience after a difficult start to the season?

A: We stuck together as a team. No matter what went wrong we always stayed together and fought for each other.

Q: What has been the key to the team’s resurgence and getting back on track?

A: The key for us has been trust and defense. We have become a really good defensive team, and as the season has progressed we have really come close and trusted each other. With that trust comes wins.

Q: How will the team continue to move forward with success through increased chemistry between the coach and all of the players?

A: We are going to keep doing what we are doing and hope it keeps working out. As a tight knit group, we can do whatever we put our mind to.

Q: At this point in the season what is the focus?

A: Right now our foucs is on a district championship. That is our end goal and what we are striving for.

Q: What does it mean to the team to be working for a league championship?

A: It means a lot that even after some tough losses we are still there and fighting for a championship.

Q: How would you describe your career as a member of the high school basketball team?

A: My career has been up and down, but it has always been fun. I've really enjoyed this whole experience.

Q: What experiences and life lessons have you gained from being on the basketball team?

A: The biggest lesson I've learned is not to give up. No matter how difficult the situation or dim the outlook is, just never give up.

Q: What is your favorite memory from high school basketball?

A: My best memory is when I hit a buzzer beater against Heath to win the game. It didn't count because we called a timeout but it was a dope shot.

Q: What are your future aspirations for after high school?

A: My aspirations are to go to college and really find out what I want to do with the rest of my life.

All athletes should try winter track

T

he high school’s winter track program has been a staple of the Granville athletics for years as the team works to improve athletic skills and movements not only for the WHIT MILLER winter track season but for preparations for future sports seasons in the spring.

Aside from the evident success of the winter track team in season, the program’s ability to recruit student athletes from a multitude of other sports enables the athlete’s to improve in various speed and strength areas that will greatly benefit them in their spring sport. Through working on the fundamentals of increasing strength and speed, students become better overall atheletes through the program.

The team’s training is made up of regimented workouts that cycle through strength training in the weight room as well as speed and agility on the track all in an effort to build a better athlete. This improves the athlete’s capabilities on the field in other sports which increases their success. This stems from the obvious fact that the bigger, stronger and

faster you are, the better athlete you are and the more likely you are to succeed in all sports. The evidence of success is presented when these winter track athletes begin their spring seasons and are already well conditioned and in shape for their upcoming seasons.

In sports such as lacrosse, baseball, softball and tennis, the increased footwork and footspeed immediately benefits the athletes because of the nature of the sports. The same with the improved strength from the work in the weight room during the winter season. In track and field, everything worked on in winter track translates over to the spring season as student-athletes have been working on track specific skills all winter.

In addition to the athletic advancements made by the student-athletes, the members of the team also begin to get a taste of competition through winter track that they otherwise would have to wait until spring to experience. This exposure to early competition comes from the various meets that the high school winter track team participates in and as a result prepares the atheletes for competition in the spring. Given the strength of the high school's program, many student athletes even get the opportunity to go to the state meet to compete in their respec-

tive event. The high school winter track team took over 30 athletes to states this past season and brought home two state championships in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays respectively.

Through becoming accustomed to the competition and the coping that comes from either winning or losing. athletes can mentally prepare themselves for spring and be one step ahead of opponents who have not had the same exposure so early in the year.

This mental preparation, combined with the increased strength and speed aspects of athletics, gives the student athletes participating in the winter track program a distinct advantage in the spring against opponents regardless of what sport they are playing. The wInter track team at the high school is a very successful and productive program that keeps athletes in shape during what would otherwise be the off season as well as provide athletic advantages and further preparation for the spring season which provides the student athlete with a head start on the spring competition.

Overall, the winter track program is a great option for a student athlete looking to stay in shape and become a better athlete as well as become a better teammate for future athletic seasons.

Beckett bounces back to success

BY SPENCER BECKETT n the middle of July in 2017, freshman Olivia Beckett received news that could change her life entirely.

Not only would her athletic life be impacted, but so would her academic and social lives. She learned that she had to undergo another surgery that would set her back to the beginning of her swimming career. 15-year-old Olivia was scared and had no idea the challenges that she would soon face later that year.

Her back was crooked at around fifty-three degrees and she was diagnosed with a back brace that she wore at night for a total of eight years until her surgery.

Her last swim meet was in January, and after recovering from her surgery it meant more to her than anything. Three years ago, on December 7 2017, she went into surgery at 6 am for a total of two surgeries that amounted to eight hours on the table at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus Ohio. Many years prior, Olivia learned that she had a back issue called Scoliosis. She had a spinal fusion which involved the placement of two rods and twenty-four screws as well as having her spinal cord untethered from her pelvic bone. While the surgery itself was monumental to her life, her recovery was excellent.

“You have to just always realize that there’s always the chance for hardships to present themselves,” Olivia said. “You just have to be prepared to roll with them when they happen.”

Olivia is now a senior captain for the varsity swim team and is hoping to finish her career strongly. She is well liked and many of her teammates look up to her not only for her swimming skills, but also her academics and even her social skills.

However, it was not always smooth sailing when it came to jumping back into the water after her surgery. Her surgery included a very long recovery.

Because her surgery was in early December, she was unable to swim that year. She would have started for the varsity team as a freshman, and would have received her varsity letter as well.

She fully recovered over a span of 3 months, attending physical therapy so that she could walk again and eventually be able to jump back in the water. Over

the summer of 2018, months after the operation, she swam for Moundbuilders Country Club out of Newark, Ohio, where she would eventually start coaching and become a certified lifeguard.

“I had to miss my freshman year of swimming and I would have been on the varsity swim team my freshman year,” Olivia explains. “So it was really really devastating to have to miss out on swim meets and swim practices.”

After the surgery was done, she stayed home until the end of the semester and started home-schooling in early January.

With nothing to do because swimming was out of the question for her, she took to excelling in school.

Because her grades were so good, she was exempted from all exams. Her Spanish teacher, Tracey Salinas, and her U.S. History teacher, Elizabeth Muhlenkamp went out of their way to make sure Olivia understood all of the information.

Whether it be FaceTiming and having a face-to-face conversation, or even coming over to her house to talk with her, Olivia’s teachers eased her recovery and transition back into school.

“My teachers were very understanding.

They were very easy to communicate with,” Olivia said. “I felt comfortable explaining my situation, and they were very

accommodating and helpful.”

Not only were her teachers very helpful, but her friends and family were by her side the whole way. She always had someone with her. Her boyfriend was over every single day that he was available and helped her get what she needed. On top of her parents, her brother who was a sixth-grader at the time, her grandparents, and her close friends, all cared for her and kept her in their thoughts while she recovered. Olivia’s mother made a Facebook post on the day of the surgery, and everybody who saw the post offered to bring over dinner one night, sit and talk with her to give her company, or even bring her a gift or two to help cheer her up. She was truly helped by everybody who knew her and that made it so much easier to bounce back after her operation.

“When you need something, the people that really really care about you will be there in a heartbeat,” Olivia said. “You just can’t be afraid to ask for help.”

“There are some battles you just can’t fight alone and as much as I wanted to get out of it strongly and be like ‘Oh, I did it all by myself,’” Olivia said. “You can’t be afraid to reach out for help with something like that.”

Sony's innovative PLAYSTATION 5 really packs quite the punch with this new conole. With the new features the Xbox Series X has to offer, Playstation aquires that energy and more with its exclusive titels and exentric design.

“When the PS5 first got announced, I was super hyped. Let's just say that this console is far from dissapointing,” said Logan McFarland.

Despite practically being on par with the new Xbox Series X, the Playstation 5 just nearly wins the race due to its major variety of exelent exclusive titles that many crave to play and its more pleasing design. Sony has become ahead of the game when it comes to reeling in new players, but with Microsoft's recent purchase of Bethesda (a game devoloping company) adressed even more exclusive titles, only time will tell who will reign supreme.

The PLAYSTATION 5's fast and polished interior projection alongside its interestin and cool exterior design earns this product a 9/10.

Microsoft's brand new XBOX SERIES X brings the much desired polished, faster and stronger big brother to the 2014 Xbox One. Previous fans of the console will be well intriged and ecstatic for this new release.

"I first thought that the current Xbox One was already perfect and unessesary to replace. This new console sure proved my opinion wrong," said Justin Reid.

The Xbox Series X has yet to dissapoint with all of its promises making its way into the consumer's hands. It would seem that the only complaints from Xbox fans would be that of the overall design of the device, with it not being the prettiest thing to look at. Plus, whether it be intentional or not, the new Xbox Series X has just enough air exhale at the top to make a ping pong float.

With its many perfomance speeds and unreal graphics infrastructure, Microsoft's XBOX SERIES X recieves a solid 8/10.

Nintendo's quaint console by the name of the NINTENDO SWITCH is very mobile in design, but strives in mainting an avid and consistant style of gaming. The use of the Nintendo Switch is purley for casual gaming, and many love that aspect.

This console is at its best when you just want to kick back and play for a shorter time.

“Whenever I am away from my other console and just want to sit back and relax, the Nintendo Switch is there to my aid. Its mobility is also a big plus, ” said Bryce Olive.

Unfortunately, due to the limiting titles you can download and the older age of the system itself, the Nintendo Switch just dosn't reach the same amount of performance and play time that the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5 offers. It is still a great console, nonetheless, with a cheaper price to boot. But with more avid gamers craving more, the other consoles just have much more of an appeal and offer.

The NINTENDO SWITCH has much to improve and expand on when it comes to its product. But with its mobile capability and a casual playstyle for all to enjoy, the NINTENDO SWITCH earns a 7/10.

The embodiment of ADHD by Kennedy Ogden

The difference on letter makes The differences between ADHD and ADD, and the challenges those disorders pose to those who struggle with them

BY KAMRYN KIRHAM DHD is one of the most misunderstood learning disabilities. This complex neurodevelopmental disorder affects about 4% of American Adults and even more kids.

People at any age can struggle with ADHD. But what many people do not know is that there are actually three types of ADHD: attention deficit/hyperactivity disorde, attention deficit disorder and the combined type. When people think of a kid with ADHD they tend to think of a kid who can’t stay still or con-

stantly interrupts. While that is the case for some kids, many people with ADHD do not show any of these symptoms.

The most well known type of ADHD is the attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder type. This type of disorder causes people to tend to have a lot of energy to the point that it causes problems according to the article ADD vs. ADHD by WebMD. They often cannot sit still and have trouble with following directions.

“ADHD has definitely caused many challenges in my life, but at least there is medication to help me,” freshman

Samantha Flowers* said.

This type of learning disorder is often the easiest to recognize out of the three types of ADHD because of the more visible symptoms. Many kids are able to get diagnosed at a young age and are able to take medication to help fix the chemical imbalance in their brains that cause it.

One of the harder to recognize types of ADHD is the attention deficit disorder type, also known as ADD. People with this type of ADHD tend to be more on the quiet side, often seen as “in their own world.” These people struggle with staying focused, organization, excessive daydreaming, long tasks, listening when spoken directly to, and following directions according to WebMD. Many people with ADD go undiagnosed because of their more subtle symptoms.

“I was not able to get diagnosed till I was in my late years of highschool because many teachers were not aware of the ADD type and only the ADHD type,” senior Naomi Johnson* said. Once people are able to get diagnosed with this type of disorder then they are usually put on medication that helps them focus. There are other types of treatment but medication is often the most effective one.

The third and final ADHD type is the combined type. This type of learning disability is just a mix of the two other ADHD categories. There are often less people with this kind of disorder because normally someone is either heavily ADHD or heavily ADD. But with that being said there are still many people who get diagnosed with the combined type. Treatment can differ depending on what each person struggles with the most.

Some ways schools can help people with anytype of ADHD, is by helping them get diagnosed at a young age. This prevents people from having to struggle for years until it gets bad enough to be noticed.

Also being aware that ADHD is not always hyperactive can greatly help people with the attentive type. People with ADHD can often be seen as “not bright” or “dumb” but they can actualy be quite smart, they just have a harder time focusing. *Name changed for privacy

'Slime Rancher' is a Jiggly Delight

BY CARYS WILLIAMS few years ago I started playing "Slime Rancher" because I was bored and wanted to play something laid back but before I knew it I had sunk over 300 hours into the game. It was a gem that I could have easily overlooked and never knew what a wonderful game it was.

It has a charming story line, wonderful aesthetics and the gameplay is very forgiving for even the most inexperienced of players.

Developed by: You get to meet various other ranchers Monomi Park as you play through the game. They range Game Designer: from an ex-food developer that wants to Nick Popovich go back to the bread and butter of farming Price: to a scientist studying the odd life forms 19.99 USD that are the slimes. All of the characters have their own charm and character development that adds a little bit of depth to a game that is very simple in design.

The diverse environment is also a rare type of treat. Even in the beginning there is never a lack of secrets to be found and interesting slimes to collect. The environments also continue to offer new things to explore and do even after you sink loads of time into the game. It is also an ideal game to start someone on. Time is both important and unimportant and it is easy to fix mistakes at any level. It also

has basic WASD controls and sticks to the basics in terms of key mapping. If you want to get someone used to keyboard controls, this is the game to do it.

It can be compared to "Stardew Valley" in some ways with its farmer aesthetics, calm gameplay and chill soundtrack, but it brings its own uniqueness to the table. Rather than making relationships with others on the planet, you discover the adventures of someone who was there before you and rather than working towards repairing a community center you work at unlocking new features and areas of your ranch along with learning bits of the past of the character you play. It also offers a larger number of creatures you raise. It also has an easier farming mechanic that you use to feed said creatures.

This game is a treat for everyone ranging from game veterans to people who are just dipping their toes into gaming. The only issue with the game is that it does not auto save; instead you have to save through the ESC menu. It is a wonderful game that offers much to do, learn and explore throughout the entire experience.

This game is a five star game and I believe the developers should be proud of making this game and balancing easy mechanics with enough difficulty to make it interesting for everyone. If I could I would love to play this game again with fresh eyes and learn about it all over again.

It is a highly mature depiction of a working-class family living in Chicago that appeals to all.

This new show is about a group of high school girls who get stranded on an island.

BY AMELIA HAVILL anera Bread has added a new item to their menu, a flat bread pizza.

I decided to test and rate the pizzas based on crust, sauce, toppings and how they taste after being reheated in a microwave. All the pizzas had a mixture of mozzarella and fontina cheeses with a tomato bell pepper sauce.

CHEESE The first one I tried was the cheese pizza, which was very good, and much more flavorful than a frozen cheese pizza from the grocery store. The sauce was smooth and the cheese didn't fall off the pizza.

The crust was pretty crunchy, but not dry. When I reheated a piece the next day, I found the crust to be softer and a bit chewy, and the sauce and cheese to be less flavorful, pretty typical of reheated pizza. 6/10.

MARGHERITA The second pizza I tried was the margherita pizza, which had sliced grape tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. While the taste was good, the toppings were not evenly spread. The reheated pizza was far less flavorful and the toppings were barely noticeable. Again, the crust was softer and more chewy, and the sauce was less flavorful. This pizza was alright, but definitely made the smallest impression. 4/10.

pulled chicken, chopped bacon and a garlic cream sauce. This was the pizza I was most skeptical about, as I’m usually not a fan of spicy foods, but it was by far my favorite. The chicken was spicy, but not so spicy that I couldn’t eat it. The toppings were not well distributed, and the reheated version was not quite as good, but it was still a pretty good pizza. 8/10.

Overall, I would recommend trying the pizzas if you are a fan of Panera Bread, but if you are looking for a good pizza, just go to a classic pizzeria.

BY BELLA BLACK Mile” is a film based on the upcoming of the very successful rapper Eminem. Also known as Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, and “Rabbit," he is a staple in the rap industry, and almost everybody knows of him. Some may disapprove of his actions, language and lifestyle, but after watching “8 Mile,” my opinion sure has changed.

This biographical movie shows just how much Marshall Mathers endured during his childhood and teenage years.

He grew up in and out of his mother's trailer, where she brings home young, abusive and toxic boyfriends. His mother refuses to go out and find a job, even though she has a young daughter, whom Marshall cared for very much. In the movie, Eminem’s little sister “Lily” represents his daughter Hailie Mathers.

At the beginning of the movie Marshall gets booed off of the stage during an improvised rap battle when he gets nervous and stays silent. The movie not only illustrates the childhood and upcoming of the greatest rapper of all time, but teaches teenagers in the audience that anyone can pull themselves out of poverty. It also shows that, with enough determination and willpower, anyone can achieve their dreams.

Capturing every moment

BY ABIGAIL TRACY reams require patience, hard work, time and thought. They cannot be obtained by simply waiting for it. Generally, dreams are most prevalent in teens.

They start to grow and find themselves, beginning to have an idea of what they want their legacy to be.

From there, it’s just about putting in the work to achieve it. One specific student is a prime example of this statement is senior Liz Fruechtnicht.

Liz Fruechtnicht is an inspiration to others around her, proving that dreams can really be achieved. Her love for photography has taken her on a journey of growth and success.

Her story is not well known to many people, yet it is powerful and inspiring, the story of making her dreams come true.

“I want to show people how beautiful the world we live in is,” said Fruechtnicht.

Immersed into the world of social media platforms directed towards photography and aesthetically pleasing content, Fruechtnicht said she found herself wanting to create her own content that “gave off good vibes.”

She began teaching herself the ins and outs of photography. She learned how to work different types of cameras through YouTube videos, articles other photographers.

After years of practicing, experimenting and taking lots of pictures, Fruechtnicht discovered her style and began narrowing her focus.

“I really like to take adventure/nature photography,” Fruechtnicht said.

“This includes travel, hiking and rock climbing.”

A natural and earthy look are the perfect ingredients to allow Fruechtnicht ‘s creativity to flow, locking he into the environment around her as she captures the beauty of the world.

“I want to show people how beautiful the world we live in is" Fruechtnicht’s junior year marked the expansion of her profile. She began building her platform and started doing professional shoots. Between senior photos, family pictures and a few business gigs, Fruechtnicht has created her own business, Elizabeth Ann Photography.

"I do consider myself a freelance photographer,” Fruechtnicht said.

Between high school, sports, applying to college and family life, Fruecht-

nicht is able to run her own business and do what she loves the most.

She plans on continuing to build her experience and learn more about the world of photography.

With her recent acceptance to a gap year program called “seamester,” run by global expeditions, she will live on a sailboat and travel to several countries in the Mediterranean and Carribean. While learning how to work and pilot the boat. On her voyage, she will have endless opportunities to capture the beauty of the world.

“I’m hoping that during this experience I can expand my adventure photography portfolio,” Fruechtnicht said.

After her adventurous gap year, Fruechtnicht plans on attending Flagler College in Florida to major in media production and minor in film production. Her ultimate goal is to remain a freelance photographer and travel.

To achieve a dream like Fruechtnicht, it takes effort. She is putting in the work it takes to live out each of her dreams. Fruechtnicht continues to believe in her work and her passion, taking it one step at a time.

“There is so much more to explore and achieve out there, I am ready for every twist and turn this journey takes me,” Fruechtnicht said.

BY Bella Black he 1990s were an iconic time period, full of popular artists like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam and Radiohead. Rock music was very popular, and Nirvana was the number one artist from the 1990s. During this time period, styles like grunge, the rave scene and hip hop grew in popularity. Perms and big hair made its way out of the '80s and into the early '90s. Mom jeans, big sweatshirts and chunky sneakers were the common style of the '90s. '90s style is starting to come back now in 2021, becoming popularized by teens who enjoy raiding their parent's closets.

The World Wide Web was also launched April 30, 1993. As the first web browser, it became very popular amoung teens and adults. With the end of the Cold War, the 90s were full of peace and prosperity.
