First day of kindergarten

e started together in kindergarten. I had Mrs. Ciferno, who no longer teaches at GES. The playground was the best part of the day, and everyone learned how to write their name. I also lost my first tooth, and excitedly called my grandma when I learned how to count to 100. First through third grade, though, was harder. It still wasn’t difficult, by any means, but we had more responsibility, more to learn, and more people to meet. We were finally “big kids.” We got to eat as much as we wanted in the lunch room and got to play on the big kid playground. Fourth grade happened, and we moved to a brand new school. We had new projects, like our very first science fair, and we had those SWEET locker signs that we got to decorate, all on our own. FISH was a huge deal, and, as we all know and remember fondly, love can

build a bridge.

Middle school, man. I think we’d all be better off if we forgot that even happened. High school, though. People who say that high school is as good as it gets are completely messing with you. Or at least, I hope they are. Because, if we’re being totally, 100% honest, most of high school really kind of sucked. When I first walked in as a freshman, I was bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and excited to finally have, like, real responsibilities. But as the year progressed, I finally figured out: being an almost-adult is not so much fun. There are problems with your friends and problems with your homework and problems with your family and problems with the fact that your knee-high Converse don’t match your sparkly purple pants (why oh why did anybody ever own those things?) and problems with literally

every aspect of your life and this is all while you’re just trying to get through puberty. The start of senior year, though, was different. I like to think it’s because all the seniors stopped caring. We stopped caring what our friends thought and stopped caring how we look at 8 AM (such an ungodly hour) and we stopped caring about all of our differences. I’m glad to be able to say that our class is a family, one we’ve been with for 12 years, and will remain a part us for the rest of our lives. Which actually means I’m sort of going to miss all of you when I’m 500 miles away. I mean, I’ve known 90% of you since I was five years old and still sucked my thumb. And now that I’ve become friends with most of you, it’s going to make it that much harder to leave everyone and everything I’ve ever known. Today is the last day of my senior year. I survived four research papers, the gigantic mess that was the senior project, an entire year of statistics and the cafeteria food. I never really anticipated it feeling like this. After all, I spent the first three years here hating it, begging to leave as soon as I possibly could. Unfortunately for me, I finally found my place, and finally started to enjoy myself, right before we leave. And I have learned so much, just this year. I think I learned more this year than all of my other years at GHS combined. I learned about people, I learned about the world around me, but most importantly, I learned about myself. Goodbye high school. Hello, new life.

BY MAGGIE MCGONAGLE s I approach the end of my senior year I am beginning to realize many things. It is the end of the first part of my life. I am about to go to college, a completely foreign world to me. I will be making new relationships, juggling grades and a social life, and finding out what I want to do FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. It’s just crazy. It’s all so bittersweet. I have lived in Granville since I was born. It is my home. For the past three and a half years I have been looking forward to getting away from my home, my family, the school drama and everything else. I am just now realizing in the last semester of high school that I’m not ready to leave. I’ve made so many good friends here. I’ve seen all of my classmates grow and change into adults. Although I may not like everyone that I go to school with, they are all I know. I have grown up with these people. I’m going to miss home cooked meals.

I have sincerely enjoyed having my mom make different (and quite interesting) dinners throughout the years. I’m not ready to go to school and have to eat gross processed foods. I’ll miss my support system. I have always been able to ask friends, family, and teachers for help. Next year I won’t have my parents right there to help me. I won’t have my friends in all of the same classes that I’m in. Most of all I won’t have the teachers that I have formed relationships with to help me when I am struggling. Most of all I will miss my family. My mom, dad, brother and two sisters. They are my world. My dad has always helped me during tough times. He always mentions how we are so much alike, and I couldn’t agree more. My mom helps me when I am struggling in friendships. She always knows what to say. I’ll miss my brother for his sense of humor, but also his ability to show emotion. And I will miss my sisters and our ability to talk about all things girl. Makeup, gossip and so much more.

Although I am nervous and sad to be going to college next year I am excited to be embarking on a new journey. I know that I will have a blast. I can’t wait to be able to do things on my own and see just how successful I can be. I am hoping to do lots of community service, and help others to better themselves as well as myself. I want to experience the many sports that I did not get to do in high school. I am excited to see what interests me. I have so many professions that I am looking into right now, and I can’t wait to see what I end up doing. It is literally a whole new world that I’m going into. My parents both went to Ohio University, which is where I am going, so I know that I will see them often. Although I will miss them and all of my friends, I know that I will keep in touch. I want to be able to keep my old relationships and form new ones. I want the full experience. The ups, downs and everything in between.

BY BLUEPRINTS STAFF t’s been an exciting year for many staff members this year as they have celebrated a number of births, weddings, engagments and now retirements.

BABIES

This year, we welcomed three new children into the lives of teachers here at GHS. Latin Teacher Derrick Fisher welcomed Zavier Fisher in the spring of 2015, English teacher E.B. Smith welcomed Reid Joseph Smith on March 16, and School Counselor Amber Gilsdorf welcomed Coen Gilsdorf on April 9. Principal Matt Durst recently announced he and his wife are expecting baby number three sometime around Aug. 24.

WEDDINGS AND ENGAGEMENTS

Wedding bells are ringing for several staff members this spring. Mr. Bright and his fiancee were married in May. It was a small ceremony, and the couple happily celebrated with their family. Granville history teacher Jenna Heinaman is engaged to Granville science teacher Ryan Sparks. The two are set to be married in June 20th. Expect even more wedding bells in the upcoming year. Art teacher Sarah Schimmel and school counselor Anne Raffay were both engaged to be married this year. There are not many details yet, but congratulations to both in their marriages!

RETIREMENTS

Industrial tech offers the chance to build and create objects and take awesome tech trips; this class taught by Mr. Jon Bennett has become a favorite and a memorable one. Bennett started his teaching career at Granville in 1985 after moving here from a high school in Wooster, Tri Way, where he taught for two years. From a young age Bennett always knew industrial tech was going to be a large part of his life when it sparked an interest in his high school years. “As a freshman in high school I had a really great teacher Chuck Wiser who inspired me to get into industrial tech,” said Bennett. After attending Ohio Northern University and majoring in Industrial Tech, Bennett soon decided to make his interest into a teaching career. Unfortunately Bennett has decided that after 30 years of teaching industrial tech, it’s time for him to retire and focus on his family. Bennett’s retirement plans include spending more time with his daughter and newly born grandchild in Indiana, along with spending time with his two sons who are both active in the military. Mr. Al Spens, a current Chemistry and Physics teacher at the high school is set to retire at the end of the 2014-2015 school year after teaching in the building for over two decades. Although his retirement is “still an unconfirmed rumor” according to the man himself, the science department at Granville High School will certainly be different come next fall if Spens does in fact leave. Spens has been teaching humanities and sciences since 1985, and began teaching here in Granville in 1994. Spens currently teaches IAP, Chemistry and Chemistry 2 to students in all four grade years, and is loved

by many students for his exciting curriculum, bizarre jokes and the dreaded penalty box. The decision to retire was certainly not easy for Spens. “It is unquestionably bittersweet. I love teaching,” Spens said, “but teaching is a creative endeavor, and when that is forced to change due to outside pressures, I’m not willing to compromise.” Spens is looking forward to spending more time with family, yet is still unsure of what he will pursue after he leaves, and said he will be “keeping it a surprise [to himself].” Mrs. Pam Thompson, a math teacher, has been working at Granville High School since 2002, but her teaching career began in 1984, when she went back to college to receive a degree to teach. She initially graduated Ohio State in 1979 with a major in business. When she began teaching, she started at the elementary school level. But since she was certified in secondary math and teaching, she decided to switch to the high school. level. She taught at two private schools before coming to teach at Granville. Thompson said her favorite memory is being able to teach AB Calculus because of the “students and material in the class.” A lot of her current and former students said they will miss her. “Mrs. Thompson is awesome,” said junior Clayton Huber. “I’m sad to see her leaving.” Mrs. Thompson is very popular among students because of her “coolness” with students. “I love her. She helps me a lot when I am struggling,” said junior Matt Crudele. The whole Granville community now bids farewell to these much-loved teachers. The BluePrints staff wishes all of them good luck!

BY LUKE BAUER As the final year of high school comes to a close for nearly 200 of us seniors, important decisions regarding our futures must be made. For a majority of us, college is the next step. I took the time to sit down with my classmates to hear where each and every one of them had decided to continue their education. Our class will represent over 70 colleges in 22 states, including schools in every region of the country.
