e are looking forward to a new and exciting year for BluePrints! First of all, you may have noticed that things are looking different with our publication. Whether it’s our new logo, or the new design and layout, BluePrints is definitely making some changes.

We are ready to take on new topics, and try different strategies to shake things up!

With this revamp, we want BluePrints to be on the cutting edge of high school publications, offering something to interest everyone.

With this fresh start, you’ll notice we have a brand new staff. So be prepared for unique insights and original views. In this issue, you will meet some new people, like our friend Pippa; you’ll read two different opinions on whether our school should start later in the day; and you may even uncover a new book. We have an article that will get you pumped up for the Fall play, and we even offer a review of the new Snapchat filters. This will help assist

those who may be a bit challenged in the cyber world.

And speaking of challenges in the cyber world, in this issue we dive into the topic of cyber-bullying and take an in depth look at the changing face of this important issue. We explore new ways to combat this world wide problem, hoping to educate and advocate for all those affected.

Opinion Cyberbullying besieges school

I

STAFF EDITORIAL t may seem as though there are no feelings of malice, jealousy, misery or worthlessness anywhere in our school, and that most students have never experienced harm from other students in their lives. That notion is a misconception.

Our school has never seen lethal physical assaults in its life, and student conversation is largely friendly. This does not mean, however, that every student is safe from being threatened, harassed or even teased against his or her will; students are still harming each other. At our school, though, bullying seems nonexistent as perpetrators have become more shrewd and secretive than ever.

The technology offered at our school and owned by students has driven the evolution of bullying. Before, the hateful comments of students to others could be overheard, and their insults could be exposed and used as an excuse for punishment. Apprehending bullies is much harder today, though. Students no longer have to speak a word or write anything down on paper to express their resentment; they can go on their phones and laptops, sending venomous messages to victims using countless social networking programs. The term for

this electronic ridiculing is called cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying allows social networking and texting programs to serve as outlets for insults of all kinds. Today, students choose these methods of communication to bully because it is much easier to be mean online than in real life. It is impossible for schools to be aware of or censor all the messages between students, so the school is often unaware that someone is being cyberbullied until it is too late; victims may not think that virtual hate messages are enough to get worked up about and show the staff of the school. Therefore, many students are living day by day enduring streams of insults coming their ways, thinking that it is not enough to get worked about. Cyberbullying, therefore, can be even worse than conventional bullying because there is more tolerance and less busting of perpetrators.

Electronic hate-speech finds other ways to damage others. In its most destructive

form, cyberbullying occurs when students use social networking to cooperate with each other in order to secretly ridicule other pupils. When this occurs, the victim does not know that many people hate him or her, and this can turn into deep-rooted resentment over time. The bullied student can become absolutely friendless and depressed, but this may not even be the biggest problem. As we well know today, students who are outcasts in their school often take revenge on others or themselves, creating catastrophes in their communities in some way or another.

Computers and phones play an important role in much of the world right now.

It is good to remember, though, that what should be used to better ourselves is often used against us. The school is not at fault; it is doing as much as it can. We do need to keep an eye on cyberbullying, though, and recognize and punish offenders with more passion than ever.

School spirit improving

BY GILLIAN MCCRACKEN (’17) STAFF MEMBER very year for the week before Homecoming, student council comes together to decide themes for “spirit week.” Main events during the week include the parade, the bonfire, the Volley For the Cure game, the football game and the dance.

On Monday night, they have the homecoming parade. Each grade has a different theme, and they have to make a float and compete to win first place. Afterwards is a bonfire with Whit’s custard, music and other activities. Every year, freshmen come last, juniors and sophomore compete for 2nd place, and the seniors always win first. This year was different from other years, though, because there were better decorations and better costumes throughout the week.

ie day on Moday, and then preppy day, Christmas day, Volley for the Cure Day and blue and white day afterwards.

Although many students do not usually participate in the themes for spirit week, it is always fun to see what people are wearing and how they show school spirit. The themes typically seem to be uninteresting, but the majority of the student body participated this year.

On Thursday is the Volley for the Cure Game. It is always fun, and the student section is always pumped up for the game.

If students wear a purchased Volley for the Cure shirt they get in free, so most of the parents and students who show up typically have the shirts.

The football team played Johnstown on Friday. Although they lost, it was still exciting to watch. Student enthusiasm during Spirit Week is still lacking, but it is definitely growing.

The dress code exposed

BY SOPHIA EHLERS (‘17) STAFF MEMBER here are students breaking dress code EVERYDAY because the dress code deems their outfits inappropriate, but are they? Dress code is one of the most commonly broken and enforced rules during the school day, yet it’s impossible to find in the student handbook because it is not listed in the table of contents!

The dress code states, sometimes vaguely, the expectations of student grooming. The handbook says, “Shorts and skirts must be of appropriate length to be able to function during the school day.”

Though it’s a valid point that shorts and skirts SHOULD be appropriate length, the length is not directly stated; therefore, the guideline leaves too much room for interpretation. Often, multiple students wear the same length skirt, but only one gets in trouble. How is this fair?

The dress code piles rule-after-rule, so some of them end up contradicting each other. It expresses that the dress code is in place to “provide a healthy environment conductive to academic purposes.”

Towards the end it says that students in violation of the student grooming code

must change clothes. This is contradicting because leaving or missing class to change an outfit is NOT creating a healthy environment, nor is the distraction it causes other students. It’s also creating a non-healthy environment for others when a teacher stops class and calls a student out or when the teacher embarrasses the student in front of the class.

The handbook expresses that students may not wear jeans with holes above the knee but may wear shorts and skirts above the knee. The logic there doesn’t quite make sense and in a way is contradicting.

Think about what happens if the air conditioning breaks. If a classroom is extremely hot, a student should not be missing class because they decided to wear a tank top instead of overheating.

Might I add that a women’s bare shoulders are NOT in any way distracting or inappropriate.

Students are pushing for a fair dress code or no dress code. We are willing to work with advisers to create an appropriate and fair dress code that has very little or no room for interpretations, one that will eliminate so many of the controversies among us.

Should we start school later every day?

BY ANNDE JO COOK (’18) STAFF MEMBER We have all had a morning when we wake up later than planned. Teenagers are known for not getting enough sleep, but this is not by choice. Studies show that on average, teenagers get 7 ½ hours of sleep, but they actually need 9 ½ hours. There are many reasons that we have been getting little sleep.

One reason most people tend to focus on is school; students get up as early as 5 am to prepare for their day. On average, 6 am is when most kids get up to catch buses coming at about 7, resulting in a lot of kids rushing to get ready. Most kids play at least one sport, but the majority play two. Waking at 6 am, going to school from 8 am to 3 pm, and then going to sports practice for two hours means that kids are getting home at 5, which seems early. However, we then want to spend time with our families for dinner, and then we have homework in almost every class. This extra workload on top of everything else means that we need to start school later so that we can recover better from late nights.

When students spend an hour eating a family dinner and then spend an hour doing homework for each of at least five classes, they are going to sleep at midnight with only 7 hours of sleep. That’s without a social life, or time to do anything else except eat, do homework, go to school and do sports.

If we started school even an hour later, kids could sleep more and feel more focused in their day. They would be a lot more productive during school, more socialable, and healthier overall. We should have been starting school later all along.

BY ASHLYN BROCKWAY (’17) STAFF MEMBER There are many reasons as to why school starts at the time it does. Our school is a very competitive place, especially when it comes to sports and clubs. Unlike some other schools; therefore, most students participate in some type of extra-curricular activities right after classes end.

Students’ commitment is one of the reasons why I’m very strongly against having school start later than it already does; if school were to start even an hour later, club meetings and sport practices would be at later times of the day, preventing students from getting home at a reasonable time and prolonging their homework well after midnight. This means that students would suffer from a lack of sleep.

Another reason why I’m against starting school at a later time is that people who play sports that start after school wouldn’t be able to play them anymore if we were to get out of school an hour or so later. Students already complain about not getting enough sleep, but if school were to start later, there would not be enough time to do everything; for many, playing sports and doing homework at a reasonable time during the same night would be out of the question.

These are just some of the reasons why school does not need to start later. We already start and leave school at reasonable times, and if the times were to change, it would throw off all after-school activities. The times when we start and end our day are perfect.

Readers’ Forum Student workload is ridiculous

I understand that Granville is an “academically challenging” school, but the workload is ridiculous. About ninety percent of my friends do about htree-to-six hours of homework a night, not to mention extra test preparation and group pojects. How are we expected to function on six hours of sleep and a constant diet of “you can do better” from our teachers and parents? I’d rather have two extra hours of school than six hours of homework each night because, like most of my peers, I need time for a life.

Juniors have too much stress I think there is far too much stress put on Juniors. With the combination of schoolwork, service work, club-activities, and SAT/ACT prep, students are unable to live a fulfilling life. Listening to the conversation of my classmates in the hallways, I hear people constantly complaining about how little sleep they’re getting in order to accommodate for the ridiculous amount of work they’re expected to pout out. How can schools exp[ect us to keep our sanity when we get three hours of sleep a night, don’t have time for social activities, and still can’t get ahead of the workload and the pressure?

Dress code enforcement makes girls feel ashamed While it’s definitely not acceptable for students to be walking around nude, sporting gang signs, or wearing a hat, it’s not acceptable to make a girl feel ashamed of the body she was born with, and the one she will have for the rest of her life.

We need more Homecoming week actitivies There needs to be more Homecoming week activities. We should hide a golden football, and the grade that finds it gets points or a prize during the week. The participation points for the grades should also be counted, and the class with the most points should be given a “spirit stick” which they get to keep for the rest of the year. The class should also get a special privilege for the week afterwards. This will really increase the amount of our school spirit.

13 students recognized by National Merit

BY DANIEL BRNJIC (‘17) STAFF MEMBER ranville Students Recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation Five Granville Students have been awarded as semifinalist by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

This prestigious award is awarded to a select few who have performed well on standardized tests. John Ball, Daniel Gibson, Zoe Guiney, Sage Kaplan- Goland and Cameron Richards all have been listed as semi-finalists. Along with money for college these kids have a massive edge over other students around the country, effectively making them competitive for being accepted into any school in the United States.

Hannah Dear makes invisible diseases visible

BY GRACE MONTGOMERY (‘16) NEWS EDITOR n Oct. 1 Junior Hannah Dear was having a photoshoot for her campaign Make it Visible.

The goal of the campaign is to bring awanress about invisible illnesses, or illnesses that are not seen. “I have an invisible illness and sometimes I feel isolated,” she commented. “By doing this people will not feel alone and also comforted by those who also are suffering from an invisible illness.”

She would take pictures of anybody who wanted to get in front of the camera and they would hold up the sign above. About 200 people participated and she plans to make a collage and hang it in the halls.

Blood drive was a success

BY GRACE MONTGOMERY (‘16) NEWS EDITOR he Latin Club hosted their first blood drive of the year on Oct. 9. There were 49 people who donated and 21 people attempted to donate blood.

“We were booked all day,” Mr. Fisher, adviser of the Latin Club said. “All together we had 70 individuals, which includes walk ins and people who did not meet the requirements for giving a pint of blood.”

The increased interest is due to more publicity leading up to the event.

“Our student coordinator Sage Kaplan Goland created more publicity with an ad in the Sentinel as well as advertising around the community,” commented Fisher.

There were also incentives introduced.

“We got a deal with Chipotle for a buy one get one free gift cards,” Fisher said.

This is not the only time students and members of the community can give blood. The Latin Club has around 4 blood drives a year.

“Our goal is to have about 60 donors,” remarked Fisher.

AP Bio students watch open heart surgery

BY MORGAN PRACHAR(‘17) BUSINESS MANAGER he AP Biology students recently had the opportunity to watch an open heart surgery as it was taking place. The teachers gave students this opportunity because during the year they do not do a cardiovascular unit.

Many students in the class may go into the medical field so having a first hand experience communicating with the nurses and doctors performing the surgery is beneficial. Most of the students love to watch; they tend to really get into the procedure.” said Ms. Audrey Hager, one of the two AP biology teachers.

The teachers do not give follow up work, as the purpose is focusing on the experience. A few activities were done beforehand to help the students understand why the procedure is done.

Junior Lily Matimoe wants to be a surgeon and felt that this was more of a hands on experience, and much more interesting than reading a textbook. “I learned that there are a lot more positions in the O.R. than the surgeon. It’s very different than what you see on TV,” Matimoe said.

Crisis training on Nov. 4

BY GRACE MONTGOMERY (‘16) NEWS EDITOR tudents will be taking part in a day long training on Nov. 4.

“This is part of a continued effort to provide a safe and secure learning environment,” Superintendent Jeff Brown said in a letter to parents.

This is a continaution of ALICE training- Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, which the staff was introudced to two years ago. It is in collaboration with area first responders.

“There will be a training in the morning and a practice evacuation by staff and students in the afternoon,” said Brown.

The Superintendent also talked about the goal of ALICE. “The goal is to use technology and information so staff and students can make smart decisions during a crisis,” he said.

There is a meeting for parents to learn about ALICE training on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the little theater.

Carlson, Pitcock named Homecoming King and Queen

BY MADELINE WALKER (‘17) STAFF MEMBER his year’s homecoming royalty has been crowned with 2015 King Chris Carlson and Queen Abbey Pitcock.

Crowning a Homecoming king and queen is something of an American tradition, and to this year’s royal pair, was seen as an honor.

“I was flattered that my class would have even put me on the court. It was nice, and such a fun experience,” said Pitcock.

This year’s court was made up of seniors Chris Carlson, John Hayes, Zach Richeimer, Alison Depage, Olivia Ebersole and Abby Pitcock. The parade was a success with the court lead by the marching band as well as the class floats, making an exciting evening for everyone.

“That was a boatload of fun. I enjoyed riding in the convertible, having a bird’s eye view of the world. Not that I’m not used to that,” Carlson said.

Pitcock reflected on recent queens.

“In all the movies homecoming queen is always a stereotypical cheerleader type, but for the past couple years it’s just been a normal person, which is cool,” she said. “I think a good queen is someone who is friendly and practices kindness.”

going as a class, looking back and looking forward.”

Abbey Pitcock agreed that she felt nostalgic on the weekend of Homecoming.

“I think sometimes people take granted what a great town we live in. I’ve been blessed to grow up in such a great environment, at a great school. I’m fortunate to look back on my years at GHS with no regrets.” blueprintsonline.org

Exposing the truths of bullying Photo by Morgan Prachar

BY GRACE MONTGOMERY (‘16), MORGAN PRACHAR (‘17) ADDITIONAL REPORTING BY ASHLYN BROCKWAY he month of October is centered around bullying awareness nationwide. The goal is to educate people about the harmful mental and physical effects of bullying. There is not so much a problem of traditional bullying, one where a person is targeting a specific individual repeatedly in front of everyone. It is the bullying that happens behind the curtains or is indistinguishable from the passerbys. Bullying here includes upperclassmen picking on the underclassman, rumors spreading, blatant disregard for how others feel and the verbal abuse friends share with each other that at times creates an uninviting environment.

A BluePrints survey given to 56 students at random shows that 17% of students have been bullied during their high school career. The survey also showed that 39% of students have witnessed bullying, 11% of students were found not feeling comfortable about talking to an adult if they have witnessed a student being bullied or if they are getting bullied themselves. Finally the survey showed that 11% of students do not feel safe from bullying at school and/or at home.

Rumors Hurt Last year there was a class presidential election and it was getting pretty heated around the school. One student, Ava Kunar, was running for class president and she felt attacked by her opponent.

“They blamed the calamity day work last year on me and the lack of the sophomore float this year,” she said. “They said it was all my fault.”

This year there was a controversy with the sophmore float, which involved someone saying she was entirely in charge of the float and she was to blame for the mishaps that occurred.

“The money was not given to me, it was given to the sophomore vice president and the sophomore secretary,” she said. “The most offending part was they spelled my name incorrectly. I do not know how this person managed to misspell my name. It is only three letters, two of which are the same.”

The bullying has not just occurred in person. It has been an ongoing thing from My Big Campus to Schoology this year.

“The last offense was three weeks ago.”

This bullying has hurt Kunar, considering she thought these were her classmates. “I thought they were my friends.”

When Kunar heard Blueprints was writing a bullying article she wanted to share her story.

“I feel like people need to know that it’s not just specific groups of people who get picked on-it doesn’t matter who you are,” she said.

“Your words affect people and it can make someone super upset.”

Ostracism According to Merriam Webster, ostracism is exclusion from common privileges or social acceptance. It was once said that “the only thing worse than being hated, is being ignored.”

A student talked about being ignored and how he upset it made him feel.

“A couple of times I have sat down to eat lunch with people and they picked up their things and left every time I tried to sit with them. Eventually I realized okay, this is a problem.”

“Giving someone the cold shoulder never solves the situation, “Professor Kipling Williams said on Purdue.edu.“The effects of ostracism are a health concern.”

Williams also talked about the popularity of ostracism.

“It is one of the most widely used forms of social punishment,” he said. “We know that when people are ostracized, it can affect their perceptions, physiological conditions, attitude and behaior– all of which sometimes can lead to aggression.”

He also discusses the psychology attached to ostracism.

“When a person is ostracized for even a brief period of time, the anterior cingulate cortex, the part of the brain that detects pain, is activated,” Williams stated.“However, the pain may not linger once the person has had time to consider the importance of the group which has excluded him or her or had time to talk about it with a friend.

If someone appears to be ostracized, being a kind and compassionate friend can completely change someone’s perception about themselves and life in general.

Power imbalance A significant problem at this school is the power imbalance of the upperclassmen versus the underclassmen. The social hierarchy dictates how people act and treat one another.

An anonymous source said he has felt victimized by guys who are bigger and older than him.

“I was hanging out in the weight room after school and all of a sudden a few guys took my weights off while I was lifting it and I dropped it,” he said. “They all started laughing at me.” This is an example of physical bullying. This student was embarrassed and was laughed at for the enjoyment of others.

Victims of physical bullying are usually physically weaker than the bullies, and also may be socially marginalized for some reason, including weight, ethnicity or other characteristics that make it harder for them to fit in, according to bullyingstatistics.org.

Bullying can have serious consequences for the victim, leading to low self esteem, depression, trouble at school and sometimes even violent behavior.

Friends? The blurry line between bullying and joking There is a very fine line between what is considered bullying and if it is just considered joking around. Sometimes the line between “a bit of fun” or “just joking” can be blurred.

Walking down the hall a passerby can hear conversations including, “You are so stupid,” “Just kill yourself” and “Move it fat a**.” While they are often said in a joking manner between friends, it is at the core a form of verbal abuse. According to PrevNet.ca, some children tease others because it can be a fun way to get attention from someone else, and they may want to reciprocate being teased themselves, and receive more attention.

The Center for Disease Control defined verbal abuse as “oral or written communication by the perpetrator against the targeted youth that causes him or her harm. Examples include but are not limited to mean taunting, calling the youth names, threatening or offensive written notes or hand gestures, inappropriate sexual comments or threatening the youth verbally.”

Teasing is considered positive when it takes place within a strong relationship with two people who appreciate the teasing as affectionate,the teaser is using a “joking” (rather than aggressive) tone of voice and smiling, and the person being teased does not look distressed, according to PrevNet.ca. Usually teasing by

friends is a sign of a close bond and a sense of comfortableness around the individuals.

Teasing becomes bullying when it is constantly repeated, and if the victim becomes upset with the action. Also if the person teasing has more social power than the victim it can cross the blurry line.

BY MORGAN PRACHAR (‘17) BUISNESS MANAGER 1. Don’t be a bystander Most bullies get away with their actions because no one speaks up. Speak up and help someone in need, whether you speak to a trusted adult or stand up to the bully themselves.

2. Think before you speak Everyone goes through different life situations. Always remember you don’t know what the person is going through, and although you think you’re joking, the receiver might not comprehend it in that way. Be sure to think before you post or say something to anyone. Ask yourself: is it nice? Is it necessary? And is it true?

3. Be accepting No two people are exactly alike no matter where you go, so the only thing we can do is be accepting to others around us.

No matter what they are wearing, saying, how loud or quiet they are, their skin color or their hair, the one thing we can do is accept them for who they are.

4. Do not exclude people Most bully victims try to stay alone most of the time. If you see anyone walking alone or sitting alone at lunch try to invite them to sit or walk with you. Especially if someone asks to sit with you, try to include them and get to know them as much as possible. You never know how much it could mean to them.

5. Spread Positivity Although staying positive through drama and stress can be difficult, try spreading positivity around the school. Simple ways to be positive are smiling at people while walking through the halls and reminding friends how much they mean to you and how lucky you are to be friends with them. WHAT'S OUR LOGO? There seems to be confusion as nobody seems to agree on the school’s logo.

Coach J.R. Wait slapped a spade on the side of his football players’ helmets; however, a Green Bay Packers’ “G” remains at the 50 yard line of the field.

The new gym floor sports the “G,” even though neither the boys’ or girls’ basketball teams see that logo on their uniforms. Other clubs and sports have a block “G”. Others have ‘Granville” written in cursive. The real question we should ask ourselves is… what the heck is a Blue Ace?

STATE OF THE REDS The season is over and those of the Queen City stew with anger over an agonizing season. Manager Bryan Price was told he would be back for next season’s campaign. That announcement didn’t leave too many fans with smiles as he seems to be the one to blame for the stalling in Cinncy. I wouldn’t be surprised to see GM Walt Jocketty try to move a few pieces this offseason. Jay Bruce?

Brandon Phillips? Something has to give and if it’s not Price, then a fire sale might be in order for the beloved Red legs.

menS' BASKETBALL The pieces are scattered about and it’s up to Head Coach Adam Teeters to assemble the puzzle. “We’re young. We’re going to have a lot of learning to do out of the gate” said Teeters. With the season fast approaching, open gyms and practices become that much more crucial for the Aces. Seniors such as Jacob Alexander, Drew Dilger, Peyton Ley, Alex Meurer and Trent Tackett are going to have to grow up fast and become the veterans. The future is now, and it is time for the young guns to step up and prove their worth.

NFL NOTEBOOK Through six weeks, five teams remain undefeated. Peyton Manning and the Broncos are relying on their defense to do the dirty work, as they are doing successfully. The Bengals look like a complete team that no one wants to compete with. Tom Brady and the Pats have barely been challenged this year as they are rolling through the AFC East. The Packers’ defense has stepped up this year to complement Aaron Rodgers. Carolina has eked their way to an undefeated record. Things are just starting to get interesting in the NFL. Stay tuned.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS In a season that started off with much hype and playoff expectations, the Jackets have done the exact opposite. Winless and on track to make NHL history for most games lost out of the gate, Todd Richards has been fired and replaced with firey head coach John Tortorella. It’s quite simple. The Jackets are allowing too many goals (up to seven) due to a pathetic defensive performance and not scoring enough (only two to three). GM Jarmo Kekalainen and President John Davidson have some decisions to make. No one expected this, and now it’s time to face the harsh reality.

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes finally completed a 60 minute football game with the dismantling of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes have struggled this year to find their identity and do not appear to be the best team in the nation. As Big Ten play picks up in the next couple of weeks, Meyer handed the keys to the offense to J.T. Barrett for the starting quarterback role as the offense has noticeably struggled under Cardale Jones. The clock is ticking on the Buckeyes, and the rest of the nation is hungry to over throw the top dogs.

FIGHTING IN THE NHL

f you ask any casual hockey fan their favorite part of the sport, most would be willing to bet that their response would have something to do with knuckles being smashed into opposing players’ jaws. The National Hockey League has had a proud tradition of allowing two players be able to duke it out in order to spark life for each players’ bench and give some energy to the crowd.

Those in the central Ohio area fall in love with the likes of Jody Shelley and Jared Boll as their favorite players on the Columbus Blue Jackets. Why? Because every time their skates touch the ice, people move to the edge of their seats looking for gloves to be dropped.

After several concussion lawsuits filed by former players to the NHL, there has been a hazy cloud that hangs over the league. Fighting has been a sensitive subject around the league for some time now. The NHL is the only level of hockey that allows fighting, as they are grown men and paid professionals who should rightfully be able to slam their fist into an opponent. Fans, along with myself, would hate to see it go. Some players would hate to see it go. It’s a sensitive subject in a not-so-sensitive sport.

BY ANNDE JO COOK (‘18) The girls’ golf team had an overall record of 52-40. Finished 6th in sectionals. Tied 9 hole scoring record for team with a score of 174, and finished second in the LCL. Alyssa Newsom was first team in the LCL, and 2nd team Mid Ohio Girls Golf League. Maggie Wolf was second team in the LCL. Ariana Long was honorable mention in the LCL. The boys’ team set a new school record, with over 200 wins. They also came 2nd in the LCL. On the team they had two district qualifiers.

There is a good chance that they will make it to the playoffs, but will not be able to host a playoff game. Not only did the varsity team have an incredible season, JV did as well. With every day practices and continuous games, the girls continued to work hard and were not prepared to settle for anything less than the best. Their final home game was last week with a win against Columbus School for Girls with a score of 1-0. The girls of the team are continuing to push themselves to improve their record and to prepare for next season.

Junior, Joslyn Yost reflected on her past season; “I feel we had a huge success as a team, we all worked really hard and it was a wonderful season.” For the select few that are headed to districts we all hope they qualify for both regionals and after that, states. Some of the team's favorite meets were: Worthington an Kokosing, said Joslyn Yost; Celsey Argyle’s favorite meet was the Watkins meet; and Galion was sophomore Jenna Hyman’s favorite meet. Overall the season was a great success.

They ended their regular season with 19 wins and 3 losses, along with being runners-up in the Licking county league. Entering tournament play against Buckeye Valley, junior starter Brooklyn Holthaus said, “We are a very strong team this year.

We have a chance to make history this year.

We just have to take this opportunity right in front of us, and run with it”. The aces are determined to take the momentum from their winning season and make a run at the state title.

The team has recorded eleven wins, and they are already making their run in the playoffs. The team is led by seniors Nikki Cox, Taylor Beitzel, Tori Long, Journy Link and Elia Taiganides.

Along with having underclassmen playing major minutes the Aces are ready to make a serious run in this year’s postseason.

The boys’ soccer team just finished a challenging season on and off the field. After beating respectable teams they earned a three seed in the postseason. Like the girls, the boys are looking to make history.

The team looks to have a winning season, and make it far into the playoffs.

They will be forced to grow up quickly as they will be replacing many important seniors from the 2014-2015 team. The team will be young this year but should provide many great games and relentless passion that fans will adore.

The team is used to playing together due to all the returning players and the new ones fit in well. The team is a drama free team on and off the courts. Playing this year are about two seniors, five juniors, five sophmores and nine freshman.

Sports The Decision: Should Parents Let Their Children Play Football?

Known for its violent nature, football has become the most popular sport in America Parents have to weigh the risks and benefits when deciding whether or no to let their kids participate.

A

s parents send their kids onto the field for the first time, one has to wonder about the emotions running through their heads. Are they scared? Excited? Proud?

The answers will most likely vary.

The question of whether or not a parent should let their child play football is a complicated one, and the additional question of when they should let them start adds even more doubt to the ordeal.

Granville seems to be headed in the opposite direction of the rest of the country.

The number of participants in youth football programs around the United States has noticeably dropped since the recent

boom in concussion awareness, but the Granville Recreation District has introduced 3rd and 4th grade tackle football for the first time as well as an additional 5th and 6th grade team.

Although many may be surprised by this, head football coach J.R. Wait wasn’t.

“The interest has always been there,” said Wait. “I know our community pretty well and I think they (the GRD) would be able to fill first and second grade teams if they wanted to.”

Although high interest in football is always beneficial to the high school program, Wait is in no way advocating the introduction of first and second grade

tackle football. Wait’s son, who is now in seventh grade, started playing tackle football two years ago.

“My family and I don’t see a problem with a fifth grader playing tackle football,” said Wait. “fifth grade was the earliest you could start at the time, but even if he could have started earlier, I don’t think we would have let him.”

Wait sees little merit to the claim that starting younger will help kids develop into better players at the high school level.

“I think it may help in the big picture, but I still see kids that were taught the right way hit with their heads down and other things of that nature,” said Wait.

Vice principal Scott Carpenter agreed.

“I don’t feel like anything in football is dependent on being taught early,” said Carpenter. “It’s not a muscle memory sport the way baseball and basketball are.

You hear stories all the time about professional football players who didn’t play in high school.”

Carpenter, who contemplated whether or not to let his son play in fifth grade, said that he wouldn’t have let his son play third and fourth grade tackle football either. Part of this opinion comes from Carpenter’s own experience.

“My parents would not let me play until sixth grade,” said Carpenter. “My school didn’t actually have junior high football, so I didn’t play in seventh or eigth grade either, but in spite of that, I still played in high school and was successful, competitive, and recruited to play Division III football in college.»

Concussions are a major concern for parents.

“I don’t think that you’re going to completely going to stop concussions from athletics,” he said. “Football is one source, but if you’re really trying to slow down concussion rates you have to start asking why soccer players don’t wear helmets and other things like that.”

According to the high school’s athletic trainer Brei Miller, girls’ soccer is actually the leading sport in concussions at the high school this fall.

Most athletes consider concussions to be a nuisance, but they are much more than that. Although symptoms go away relatively quickly, underlying issues like neurodegenrative diseases and post-concussion syndrome may not.

According to Dr. Robert Cantu, a concussion expert at Boston University, children under the age of 14 are especially susceptible to serious injury since their nerve fibers are not yet fully coated.

Even though football, and sports in general, involve risk, there are also benefits to be considered.

Athletics teach skills such as persistence, teamwork, sacrifice and concentration that are often hard to learn in a class room.

“For me, the most valuable lesson from athletics is being part of a team where that group is more important than your individual needs,” said Carpenter. “Anybody who gets married and has a family has to recognize that their family and what’s best for their family has to outweigh their personal needs. Ultimately that may be one of the biggest lessons you learn in life, being able to make sacrifices for your team, your family that may not be best for you personally.”

Parents may dismayed to hear that there is no clear cut answer as to if they should let their children play football. Whether it’s under the lights on a Friday night or on the practice fields during a Sunday afternoon, families have to weigh the risks and benefits and come to a decision themselves.

Generals Raring for another shot at the state title

F

BY COLE JAQUITH or the first time in six years, there won’t be a single state champion on the Newark Generals roster. The Generals experienced a great deal of success during the 2014/2015 season, winning both the Blue Jacket’s Cup and Miami University’s annual high school tournament, but fell just short of the state title in a devastating overtime loss to the Medina Bees. Although the last remaining member of the 2012 state championship team geraduated, the Generals are still bringing back plenty of experience, missing only four members from last year’s team.

The senior laden defense looks to remain strong and three out of the top five scorers will be returning this season as well. With a strong showing by the freshman last year, the General’s hope to get even more production out of the underclassmen who now have a year of growth and experience under their belts. Games have always been heavily attended by Granville students, and with eleven Granville players currently on the roster the team hopes to get even more support this year. The Generals first home game is against the Athens Bobcats on Thursday, November 5 at the Lou and Gib Reese Ice Arena. blueprintsonline.org

BY GILLIAN MCCRACKEN STAFF WRITER When you first came to America, did you expect it to be anything like this?

Yes, I was expecting to see nice people, a lot of fast food, and I knew that the school was like this, a little bit different than mine, so, yeah.

In Portugal are there any stereotypes about America?

It is about fast food, but we also think that the American people is very healthy at the same time. Like you see a lot of people running with their dogs on the street.

Are any of those stereotypes true?

Uh, yeah. I think all of them.

What motivated you to come to America?

To make new friends and to get better on my English.

How is your school different than ours?

In my school the teachers move around and change classes and the students stay in the same room every day. And we only have like one class. We don’t change persons were always with the same persons and in the same room.

What family are you staying with?

The Beighleys.

Had you ever been to the states before you were an exchange student?

Uh, no. I went to Canada, and I had a road trip. I stopped at the United States, but I didn’t see anything. It was on like the mountains.

What’re your thoughts on how Homecoming went?

I think it was fun.

What do you usually do daily in Portugal, like activities or hobbies?

For sports, I do gymnastics competition.

It’s similar to cheerleading, but it’s not the same thing. For hobbies, I like to hang out with my friends-- to have dinner and then shop, those things.

Where do your friends typically hang out in Portugal?

We have a big park near my school with cafes. We usually hang out there.

Do you like your school system better or ours?

I like yours better.

How is Portugal different than Granville?

I think that the most different is the public transportation. Here I’m not independent at all because I don’t have my driver’s license and I cannot walk because it is very far and you don’t have public transportation. In Portugal, everything is very close and you have buses everywhere.

What things does your host family do different than your family in Portugal?

Dinner and lunch time. We have a lot of differences. With Christmas, there is a little difference. With birthdays and the way of doing them, I know it is very differnent.

Is the food very different in Portugal?

We eat a lot of fish and meat. Here you eat a lot of sandwiches and pasta and chicken.

What is your favorite Granville restaurant so far?

Popeye’s. It’s not Granville, but it’s my favorite.

What fun things have you done in Granville so far?

I went to a concert and I’ve had sleepovers, and I liked Homecoming a lot.

Do you play any sports in Ohio?

No, because I arrived in the middle of the season, but I am going to try indoor track.

What do freshman think of the high school?

Freshmen adjust to high school life

Some students have adjusted better than others to the heavier workload of the high school.

BY HUNTER BROWN STAFF WRITER typical theme in high school is survival of the fittest. Mixed feelings are coming from a few of the freshmen. Some are enjoying high school, while others completely hate it.

For some, the high school is a big improvement over the middle school.

“Not much homework, I get seniors to buy me food at the Nutribar and high school sports are more fun,” Keegan VanMeter said.

Then the freshman began bringing up their thoughts toward high school in comparison to middle school. “[School] goes by a lot faster than middle school,” Nate Stone said.

“High school is a lot more work, but a lot more fun than middle school,” according to Gabe Neuenschwander.

On the flip side of all this, not all freshmen are enjoying their year.

“It completely sucks,” Kyle Magum said. “School is confusing and I hate how there is no (cell phone) service.”

Others find that specific courses are challenging.

“Spanish is a difficult class because it

makes you learn a new language, when you hardly understand your own,” Riley Kill said.

If students are facing difficult classes and need help they can always turn to the teachers, and the office for help.

“Every freshman who has a study hall is automatically given a mentor, and if needed they could get a peer tutor during their study hall time. We (the office) has student and adult tutor lists if that is what the students parents want to do,” Mrs. Raffay said, a guidance counselor at Granville High School.

In the study hall room, every freshman has one upper class men with them that was approved to be a mentor to them.

“I basically babysit them; I make them do their homework because if I did not, they would not make it through high school,” senior mentor Emma Petryk said.

So as the freshmen warm up to their new home, a few of them have been enjoying their time here. On the other hand, a few are already starting to hate it.

But it is survival of the fittest, therefore they need to adapt, or they will fall behind the pack.

“It isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m proud of the fact that I haven’t been shoved in a locker yet.”

Alums return home to teach

BY COLE JAQUITH (‘16) SPORTS EDITOR any members of the district staff have done what most students vow never to do; return to high school.

For some, returning to Granville was always their plan.

“Even when I started thinking about going into teaching, my ultimate goal was to come back to Granville and teach here,” science teacher Mr. Jim Reding said.

Others never would have dreamed they would be working at their alma mater.

“If you had told me that I was going to be back teaching at my high school, I would’ve thought you were crazy,” drama teacher Mrs. Sara Sharp said.

Like Sharp, English teacher Mrs. Molly Gardner never planned on coming back to Granville, but she knew what she wanted

to do when she was offered a position at the high school.

“I was interviewing at New Albany at the same time and I ended up having to pick which place I wanted to work, but I knew what I would be getting into here,” Gardner said. “I knew what type of people I would be working with and what types of students I’d be teaching, so I was confident with the choice I made.”

Secretary Barbe Helwig, whose family co-founded the Welsh Hills area of Granville, realized she wanted to stay in Granville when there was a possibility that she would move to the Netherlands due to her husband’s job.

“My kids hadn’t graduated from here yet and I was thinking that they had to graduate before we moved, then the more I thought about it, I realized that I didn’t want to leave Granville,” Helwig said.

Sharp, who worked as an actress in Chicago, made her way back to the high school in a much different way than any of the other faculty members.

“Being in the city was awesome, it was a great place to be post-college, but I started realizing that Granville was a nice place to raise a family and have your kids live and I ended up coming back,” Sharp said. “I was looking for a Granville in Chicago.”

The staff members who have come back to Granville have all been able to contribute something new to the high school that wasn’t around when they attended.

Reding has impacted the science program in a huge way. With the introduction of the land lab and school garden, he is able to not only teach students the material, but have them go outside and do hands on activities to reinforce what they are learning as well.

Sharp has had great success as the director of the school plays and with ISP, which offers a much greater level of intervention and mentoring than any program that was around when she was in high school.

Government teacher and head football coach J.R. Wait’s government class focuses largely on current events and all forms of government, as opposed to the former focus on local government. Wait has also lead the football program in the creation of a winning tradition.

“The strength and conditioning program is very different from what it was, it’s helped bring the (football) program a long way,” Wait said. “The size of the school has had a significant impact as well; everything is a lot bigger now.”

Gardner’s, as well as all other English teacher’s classes, integrate much more technology into the curriculum. Students now focus much more on independent online research to prepare them for the expectations of colleges.

Granville graduates have contributed a great deal to the high school and whether they mean to or not, it seems like they find their way back, proving that there really is no place like home.

The pumpkin flavoring does not taste artificial like most pumpkin flavors.

BAD- Pumpkin pie pop tarts, taste is way too artificial OKAY- Apple crisp gum, it doesn’t taste too artificial, and you get the feeling of fall but the taste is no more than decent.

DECENT- Caramel apple crunch n’ chew jolly rancher, has a good flavor to put you in that fall mood, but there is nothing special about it to separate it from the other fall foods.

Both of these lines give wonderful curl, volumize and lengthen your lashes. All of “Tarte’s” makeup items are gluten free, paraben free, free of synthetic fragrances, and many other harsh ingredients. Some of their mascaras are a two step process, including lengthening and volumizing fibers and a primer/setting coat. These mascaras are well worth the money, ranging from $10-$23.

Nyx Cosmetics- Nyx Cosmetics was sold in high end makeup stores such as Sephora before moving down to the drugstores due to their low prices. Nyx is known for their lip products which are very high pigmented and long lasting. They have a big range of colors from nude to purple to green.You can find these lipsticks in a matte finsih or glossy, which ever work for you. These lip products range from $3.50 for a lip liner to $7.00 for a lipstick.

Covergirl- The classic Covergirl has been in drugstores for many years, used by young teens to elders and it’s not difficult to see why. The Covergirl “outlast stay fabulous” line sticks out to me whenever someone ask for recommendations. All

their foundations are long lasting and very buildable. As a dancer, at competitions, I always need a long lasting foundation that stays put through the day, and Covergirl has always been my go to foundation.

Their face products are very affordable ranging from $6.99$14.99.

Benefit Cosmetics- Benefit Cosmetics was started by a set of twins in 1976.

Benefit is known for their lip/ cheek tint and their box powders. The lip and cheek tints are available in a rage of roses and pink colors that fit every skin tone. They work as a base for your favorite blush or a standalone stay all day pigment.

These tints are usually priced around $30.00 for a full size, which last a very long time. The box powder colors include both bronzer and blush. These powders come in very cute packaging and are a high quality product. The box powders are $28 and include a small brush with them.

Due to the amount of different colors and pallets, there is a pallet that is best for anyone’s skin tone. The colors are pigmented and long lasting. The pallets range from $29.00 - $54.00.

Five YA books that should be movies

BY OLIVIA EBERSOLE (‘16) ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR ver the past years movies on the big screen are coming more and more from the pages of books. Classic books are being remade into movies, and a ton of young of adult stories are being moved to the big screen.

Although many books are now movies, there are some young adult books I believe deserve to have their moment in the theaters.

The first book, “Throne of Glass” by Sarah J. Maas is a fantasy and adventure story. The main character is a strong heroine who fights for what’s right. The story includes an evil king, a rebellious prince, and a handsome captain of the guard.

The plot itself has action, romance, and mystery. The perfect blend for not only teenager movie goers, but also adults. Overall this book brings in a great murder mystery, action, strong character development and amazing description that is meant to appear on the big screen.

The second book that just calls for a movie is “Cinder” by Marissa Meyer. This is a dystopian young adult book with adventure, action, and more importantly, cyborgs. The plot itself is a re-telling of “Cinderella”, and when teenage girls hear those words they flock to the theaters. But the action and robots in the book can appeal to boys too. The futuristic setting and constant action just screams, “I should be a movie!”

The “Body Finder” by Kimberly Derting, sounds like a movie title itself. This isn’t your typical young adult novel, the main character has a special ability to find dead bodies. These bodies have a special ‘echo’ that match the killer’s ‘echo.’ This unique ability puts the main character in danger multiple times.

The book has major suspense that has you sitting on the edge of your seat, and cheering for the characters to live. It translates perfectly into a movie script.

A re-telling of “Beauty and the Beast” has become popular in the YA world. In “A Court of Thorns and Roses”, Sarah J. Maas brings the long loved story back to life with a magical world of fae and a strong-willed heroine. The romance is anything but love at first sight, and Maas develops the connection beautifully, with action and a magical world around the characters that would be perfect to watch on a big screen.

Last but not least is “Shatter Me” by Tahereh Mafi. This dystopian novel includes a forbidden romance, an evil dictator, and the hope of a better life. Within the book there are unique cross outs, where you can still read the character’s thoughts but they have a line over them. This would be a very cool add to a movie, and interesting to see how it would be put together. The strong heroine is intelligent, the writing is both beautiful and jam packed with action and plot twists. Which of course any theater goer loves a good plot twist.

BY SOHPIA EHLERS (‘17) STAFF WRITER unday afternoon was my first time eating at Melt. Right away parking was a bit of a challenge for a late lunch, though parking can be difficult in the Short North at times. There was a wait, but no more than 25 minutes. My waitress was very attentive and good with giving suggestions for a first timer like myself.

Right of the bat I could tell the portions were enormous from looking around the room. The menu had a wide variety of options and not all were sandwiches or grilled cheese. They had a variety of soups and salads along with the option of making your own and which. I ended up deciding on the Mighty Macaroni grilled cheese.

When my meal arrived I was quite pleased with the presentation, it looked phenomenal. The sandwich comes with the option of whole or a half size at $12.50 and $9.50 with a standard fair cut fries, and a pickle spear. My first bite was pleasing but not as good as it looked, perhaps because Mac-N-Cheese on a sandwich is different and I wasn’t quite used to the texture on a sandwich.

All and all I would come back to this place and try the many different sandwich options on the menu or maybe even a salad!

I give Melt 4 stars for good atmosphere, great waitressing, good food and huge portions for the price.

BY MORGAN PRACHAR (‘17) Business Manager napchat recently released new interactive filters across the board. Some of the filters that have appeared so far included an old man with a monocle that appeared when you raised your eyebrows, an aquarium with fish swimming around, and a scary face that appeared when you open your moth and many more.

So far Snapchat is adding one and deleting one each day.

This update has made conversations much more entertaining. This update is still pretty glitchy, but sometimes the glitches make it even more fun. The worst part is that Snapchat has begun to delete the best ones. There was a filter that allowed the user to “puke rainbows” which was quite popular and caused social media chaos when it was deleted.

The update changes the shape of your face, and many more of your facial features, to make you a completely different person, in retrospect.

The scary face was added as one of the originals but deleted about a week later.

With Halloween around the corner, we no longer have the perfect filter to scare our friends.

I enjoy seeing the new filters every morning but am occasionally let down by the ones added. One day a heart eye emoji filter was added, and in my opinion was flat out creepy. Most people would agree that Team Snapchat should bring back most of the original filters, but maybe add new ones on occasion. Kelsey Frahn loved the “rainbow filter” but since it was deleted her new favorite is the aquarium filter.

Some features they could add is the ability to use the filters when in the rear facing camera, sometimes to get the funniest snapchats, is catching people off guard. Another feature would the ability to capture two faces at once using the same camera.

Overall, these filters have more pros than cons. I highly recommend downloading these filters if you’re in the mood to take some silly pictures and videos.
