BRANCHING OUT MORE STUDENTS ARE CHOOSING OSU BRANCH CAMPUSES AS A WAY TO SAVE MONEY AND AS AN ALTERNATIVE PATH TO MAIN CAMPUS

BY ANDY HOBEN (‘20) hio is a state that offers many diverse options for higher education, from large Division I schools like the Ohio State University to smaller, local options like Granville’s own Denison University. As the years have gone on, there has been a large fluctuation in the trends in college choices, especially across in-state schools. After considering costs, student life, proximity to home, and quality of education, many families are choosing to send their child on a path that ultimately leads to the school with the largest on-campus enrollment in America, The Ohio State University. However, this path often does not start in Columbus. Instead, students start their journey close to home at the Newark branch.

In the last ten years, schools like Miami University and Ohio University have maintained their average enrollment from Granville graduates fairly steadily, each receiving intent from an average of seven or eight percent of the graduating class from the years of 2009 to 2013 and from 2014 to 18. Conversely, the University of Cincinnati has seen a drastic uptick in Granville enrollees, going from less than four percent of the graduating classes from 2009 to 2013 to over eight percent from 2014 to 2018. The biggest difference that can be seen in the college selections of Granville graduates, however, is their decision to attend the Newark Branch of Ohio State as opposed to main campus.

Ten years ago, few students headed for The Ohio State University at Newark, while now the number of students going to the branch actually outweighs those attending main campus. The reason for this can be attributed in part to the growing competitiveness of attending Ohio State.

Bizjournals.com reported that Ohio State’s average ACT score rose from 26.4 in 2006 to 28.9 in 2018, meaning that acceptance into main campus is becoming increasingly skewed towards higher-achieving students. However, branch campuses have a nearly 100% acceptance rate, meaning it is a safe option to apply and start coursework in hopes of eventually transferring to main campus.

Many families are taking advantage of the ease of access, quality education, and potential to transfer to the highly-regarded Ohio State main campus. Grant Foster, a 2018 Granville graduate, is attending Ohio State Newark campus and his brother Evan, who is a current senior, plans to attend the Newark branch as well. The elder Foster sees many advantages to going to the branch.

“It’s an opportunity to gain a good education close to home while working towards main campus,” Grant said. “It was an easy decision for my family.”

Also, according to the Ohio State University website, yearly tuition for an in-state applicant was $5,661 in 2009, while that number nearly doubled to $10,726 in 2018. This makes the local branch option more appealing since students are able to live at home, saving them room and board expenses, while the coursework at community colleges are typically little to no cost to the

“I am excited to meet new people and take advantage of the opportunities that are given to me,” Evan, the younger Foster brother, said. “I think going to OSUN will be a good experience.”

While the college selection landscape has evolved, one trend that has persisted over the last decade among Granville families is a focus on taking a path that will challenge their child academically while not burning a hole in their pocket with exorbitant tuition costs. Choosing the Newark branch has become common in recent years and is looking like it will only become more popular as more classes graduate from Granville. And for those wondering if the student life of the branch campuses is any less lively than that of the bigger schools, Grant Foster would tend to disagree.

“It’s fun, relaxed, and you get to be around a lot of your old friends while also meeting new people,” Foster said.

any students admire the faculty members that have helped them grow as students and as people. At the end of the 2019 school year, Granville High School will be saying goodbye to math teacher Renee Runyan and art teacher Jennifer Kinsley.

MRS. RUNYAN Mrs. Runyan has taught at Granville for the bulk of her career, and has been teaching Algebra II and Geometry at Granville for 14 years.

“This would be the end of my 25th and a half year teaching,” Runyan said. “I taught at Ashland High School for ten years and then Bishop Hartley for two.”

Mrs. Runyan enjoys talking to her students, and enjoys being able to help them understand different lessons and concepts.

“I really enjoy helping people one-on-one, and I really enjoy when I see them really understanding something,” Runyan said. “I love all the relationships made with the kids and all the connections. I’ve had so many good moments here.”

Students who currently have or have had Runyan will miss seeing her around school, and say her positive and welcoming attitude is irreplaceable. “[Mrs. Runyan] is a very sweet and nice person,” said Algebra II student Anna Luedka. “She is extremely understanding and tries her best to help every person as much as she can and I’ll really miss having her as a teacher. ” Although she will miss teaching, Mrs. Runyan has exciting plans for retirement, and is ready to be more spontaneous in the activities she does.

“I have a bunch of trips scheduled this year,” Runyan said. “I have one for June, one for July and one for October planned. I’m also excited to spend more time with my grandchildren.”

Even though there are some aspects of teaching that Runyan will not miss, teaching will still hold a place in her heart because of the relationships made.

“Although I definitely won’t miss the grading and paperwork, I’ll miss the classes that I have made a connection with and the fun times we have in there,” Runyan stated. “I’m really just going to miss just being Math teacher Renee Runyan with the kids in general.” assists a student. MRS. KINSLEY Prior to teaching art classes at Granville, Kinsley worked at many different places and taught several different subjects, which all contribute to her large experience “I started out teaching special education in Lancaster and then went on to teach special needs art,” Kinsley noted. “I also taught a parent-child program at the Columbus Museum of Art and drawing and children’s literature at Ohio State University, and I was also an Art Director at The Works.”

Mrs. Kinsley enjoys with all of her students, especially those who show a strong interest in art.

“I really enjoy working with engaged and curious students who really take an interest in my class,” Kinsley said.

During her career at Granville, Kinsley has had countless memorable moments; however, one stands out among the rest. “[One of my favorite memories at Granville] is when the teachers from every department would dress up on Halloween and perform skits for the students. I felt like it really united the Granville High School community,” Kinsley noted. “It was just so much fun and I just really miss that.”

Many students had good words to describe Kinsley, and said they enjoyed her art class as well as her teaching methods.

“Mrs. Kinsley is a wonderfully creative teacher that positively encourages everyone in her classroom no matter their skill set when considering art,” said junior Madison Snipes. “Mrs. Kinsley made my required year of art quite enjoyable!”

Although Kinsley will miss being in a school environment, she is ready to be able to pursue more of her interests in retirement.

“There’s so many things I’m excited to do,” Kinsley commented. “I want to make more art, ride my bike more, garden, and I want to play more ping pong with the league I’m a part of!

Although I’m going to miss [my students], I’m excited to have more freedom.”

THANK YOU, GRANVILLE BLUEPRINTS STAFF s we are getting ready to graduate and leave Granville for the next four years of our life, many of us are not leaving the school in the best of spirits. Lots of seniors graduate feeling fed up or jaded with the school and the opportunities and friendships this community has given to us.

The community of Granville is something that we take for granted on a daily basis. The ability to be able to have a community that has your best interests at heart and having people you know will support you no matter what is something that we at Granville tend to overlook. The fact that you can walk down a street and see at least five people that you know and they ask you how you and your family is doing is something that cannot be found in many places.

The opportunities that can be provided by the community of Granville are some of the most important things that we can take with us to college from job experiences to advice from professionals in fields that we hope to be in one day.

Some opportunities that we could have at Granville that are not offered at other schools are things like Global Scholars or the senior project where you get to work side by side with professionals thats purpose is to make us better students and

candidates for jobs.

Another thing that some students don’t miss right now but will appreciate in the future is the academics of Granville High School and the idea that we were pushed a lot harder than students in other high schools the most prepared for the world to come after. The experience we have gained from writing in class essays and long papers will be a major advantage over others in college.

A lot of people are excited about leaving home now but will undoubtably miss our family as the year continues. This is our first opportunity to escape from under our parent’s wings and branch out, but we should not forget about the people that got us there in the first place.

A lot of us are leaving behind younger siblings and it is important to understand that this is a big change for them, too.

A final thing that we as seniors take for granted and will miss next year and something that brings us joy everyday is our friends. Next year it will be important for us to keep contacts with our friends and to not lose the people that make us the people that we are.

So before we leave for school in August remember to understand and remember all of the things that we are thankful of and try and think of our best memories of Granville.

In each issue this year, two cousins on the BluePrints staff will debate over many different topics. Although they are part of the same family (they both have parents who teach in the building) and see each other every day, they have very different views on many issues. We hope you enjoy our fourth BluePrints family feud.

Growing up in a family where tradition is something you are raised to respect, sports are something that can cause major dilemmas. While most of the older generations of my family were born and raised in Midland, Michigan, and literally bleed maize and blue, a small number of my family members root for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

My dad and his brothers and sisters were raised with the idea of being Michigan fans, and they had no choice for anything else. When the family started branching out, OSU fans married into the family.

When I was born, my team

was already chosen due to a compromise between my parents, and because of that I will root for the Buckeyes for the rest of my life. Even though I am not a huge football fan like a lot of my cousins, I still know when I need to dress up in my scarlet and grey to watch my Michigan cousins look sad in defeat.

OSU is clearly the better team and this can be seen from the recent scores. In the last ten years OSU has defeated Michigan eight times out of ten. These scores correlate to the superior coaching and teams that Ohio State has had compared to the Michigan

teams. The Ohio State University is the number one school when being compared to Michigan in academics and sports.

Although the early Michigan teams lead the rivalry in the last decade, the Buckeyes have blown away the Michigan teams ever since.

Good vs. evil, light side vs. dark side, Wolverines vs. Buckeyes: in my family, they are all one in the same.

Rivalries across fan bases are one thing, but rivalries within families, ones that cause divided houses, are more intimate and constant. However, there is only one right answer in the Ohio State and Michigan debate, and it comes in the colors of maize and blue.

Living in the heart of Buckeye country my entire life has only reinforced the fact that being an Ohio State fan is a truly immoral and idiotic decision.

Buckeyes are arrogant, ignorant and most of all annoying, and use their fandom as their defining character trait.

Michigan fans, on the other hand, are more pleasant and worldly, possibly due to the fact that the university is one of the best public schools in the

country.

Another factor that needs to be taken into consideration is the college town. Ann Arbor has consistently been voted one of the best college towns in America, while Ohio State’s Columbus campus is a concrete jungle that has less of a hometown feel than the University of Michigan’s campus.

When it comes to sports, though Ohio State has had Michigan’s number over the last 20 years in football, Michigan has one of the best atmospheres across all sports and one of the best fanbases in the country.

Michigan also has one of the most expansive alumni networks in the country and has produced graduates that have gone on to do everything from be a CEO of a major company, to being the president of the United States, to being Tom

Brady.

All in all, there is no doubt that the bloody scarlet of the Buckeyes is the most irritating and ugly color ever.

Lou Wood’s story of resilience and defying all odds

BY SARAH CARPENTER (‘20) n September of 2015, then sophomore Louis Wood was involved in a serious car accident while riding with friends to soccer camp.

STAR SPOTLIGHT: ERIN SHOMAKER

BY MOLLY WILSON (20’) tand-out volleyball player Erin Shoemaker plans to continue her athletic and academic a career this upcoming fall at Florida Gulf Coast University.

In high school, Shomaker played outside, middle and back row; however, in college she is transitioning into playing mainly outside.

She was a four-year volleyball letter winner at GHS and played club volleyball in her spare time. As a freshman she played basketball and lettered her first season.

She stopped playing basketball after her freshamn year.

“It was hard to find time to play basketball and club volleyball,” Shomaker said.

Through quitting basketball, Shomaker was able to devote all of her time to playing school volleyball in the fall and club volleyball during the rest of the year.

According to Shomaker, club volleyball tournaments are where college coaches recruit high school players. She felt that this was a more important commitment then playing high school basketball.

This dedication and hard work that Shomaker put in her freshman and sophomore years paid off for her in the long run, as she signed with the university this fall.

She leaves mid-June to attend camps for volleyball and take summer classes.

She chose to attend Florida Gulf University because “It is in the south and the campus is beautiful.”

“I am excited for all the opportunities that playing a sport in college will give me,” Shomaker said.

FORGET ABOUT LEBRON VS. KD... IT’S GIANNIS’ TIME

A big debate has arose during this years NBA playoffs about whether Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors has surpassed former Cleveland Cavalier Lebron James as the “best player in the world.” Well, I think that awarding the title is actually a pretty easy decision… and it shouldn’t go to either of those players. Giannis Antetokuonmpo, the 7-foot do-it-all star for the Milwaukee Bucks, is in just his sixth year in the league but is taking it by stormed in his MVP caliber 2018-19 season. The “Greek Freak,” as he is affectionately called due to his heritage and his freakish athleticism, Giannis has averaged 28 points per game to go along with 12 rebounds and five assists, as well as being one of the best defensive players in the league. He uses his crazy length to drive the length of the court in less than three dribbles: with the ball in his hands, he is truly unstoppable. THE NFL DRAFT IS PHENOMENAL REALITY TV While sitting down and taking in the 2019 NFL Draft, I was exposed to just about the widest range of images possible: players cheering, families crying, fans jeering and analysts scratching their heads at the more boneheaded picks. These elements are what make the NFL Draft much more than just a system for selecting the rookie class for the upcoming season, as it is also some truly great drama-filled reality TV filled with storylines galore. This year, some of the more baffling parts of the night came from the usual suspects, the quarterbacks, and more specifically the teams that decided to select them. First overall pick Kyler Murray is a 5-foot 9-inch baseball player turned signal caller; sixth pick Daniel Jones is seen as the heir apparent to Eli Manning in New York, but is he worthy? And was former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins deserving of a slide to the 15th pick? All of these things and more are what make the NFL Draft great; or, if you a a New York Giants fan, prepared for mutiny.

NHL POSTSEASON IS BEST PRO SPORT PLAYOFF While I know out of the Big Four sports that hockey receives the least amount of viewership, its postseason is a truly special time of the year, and Columbus residents saw exactly why that is during the Blue Jackets’ unlikely run this year. While the last ranked seed toppling the first ranked seed has happened in other pro sports, most notably the Dallas Mavericks falling to the “We Believe” Warriors in 2007, in no other sport can an 8 seed gain momentum and regularly compete as they can in hockey. Playoff hockey is fast-paced, unpredictable, entertaining and is a great way for the sport to showcase its exciting style of play over the course of the playoffs. The Blue Jackets, who barely squeaked into the playoffs as the 8 seed, were in the lead in the series before eventually falling to traditional powerhouse Boston Bruins. When the spring months roll around every year, the NHL playoffs are one of its cornerstones within the sports world.

CENTRAL DISTRICT IS BEST IN STATE FOR SPRING BALL

Granville baseball and softball has to go through a true gauntlet every year in the district playoffs for even a chance to make it to state, and that is apparent in the sheer numberof central district winners who have made noise in the state tournament. Within the LCL, Lakewood has been a perennial powerhouse in both baseball and softball in the Division II Central District, making multiple final fours in the last 15 years and winning countless other district championships. Heath has won multiple state championships on the Division III level, and Newark Catholic has been the dominant team in Division IV in baseball. Outside of the LCL, Bloom Carroll has been consistently one of the top teams in the Division II bracket in both baseball and softball and has won multiple state championships, and CCL schools such as Bishop Watterson, Bishop Hartley, and Desales have made lengthy tournament runs. No matter who the Aces match up against in the district tournament, chances are they will face a battle-tested powerhouse in Division II.

BLUE ACE SPRING SPORTS REPORT

BY BLUEPRINTS STAFF Baseball The Blue Ace Baseball team comes to the end of their league season with one more upcoming tournament game at home. Their record currently is 17-10, after dominating both of their last games vs. Heath and Tri-Valley and winning against Centennial in the first round of the playoffs. The team continues on in the playoffs into the district semifinals against Sparta Highland on Tuesday, May 20th.

Girls’ Lacrosse The varsity girls’ lacrosse season began on March 19 with a game against Olentangy.

The team’s record is 17-3, and the next game is on May 20th against Columbus Acadamy in the regional semifinal. Notable players on the team include Sophie Shaw, Lauren Newkirk, Audrey Smith and Ella Gravitt.

Junior Gravitt has already committed to Kent State for lacrosse, and senior Newkirk will be playing lacrosse at Otterbein.

Boys’ Tennis The boys’ tennis team had a good season with five seniors leading the team to finish with a 14-3 record. The seniors include Raleigh Conway, Tanner Dixon, Noah Flowers,Scott Sharp and Evan Noth. Conway will be competing in districts and is the first player to qualify since the team moved up to DI. The team wants to thank coach Mullins for the experience.

Boys’ Lacrosse The boys’ lacrosse season came to an end on Monday, May 13 against Bishop Watterson in the second round of the DII playoffs. They finish the season at 5-8. Senior Jake Belt led the team in scoring with 35 goals. Captain Mason Ketron was on his way to another great season for the Aces before an injury. They will bring back a strong group of underclassman, including juniors Ethan Ramsey, Zak Taylor, and Tyler Dickerson, sophomores Joey Chaykowski and Parker Williams, and freshmen Michael Sarap and Kaison Durham.

Track The track team this year is doing great. On May 9, the girls won the Licking County League meet and the boys placed second right behind Watkins. “Our track team is looking really good and getting ready to expand and prosper next year,” junior Rudy Bradley said. The finals are on May 18 and Granville is looking to cap off a successful season.

Softball The softball team wrapped up the regular season going 9-4 in their conference. Seniors are looking forward to possibility of the team making a playoff run this year. They are on the right track, winning their first tournament game 13-2 this past Tuesday. Their next game is against Jonathan Alder and will be played at Pickerington Central High School. They are led by their strong pitching staff, headlined by senior Kaitlyn Brown and junior Kara Gunter.

“I really enjoy coaching at GHS,” Parsley said “It has been fun watching both field hockey and lacrosse develop into strong programs that are each respected in the state.”

There are no other Licking County teams for both field hockey or lacrosse, so Parsley finds their schedule filled with very competitive and DI schools.

As a result of much competition and practice Parsley has much excitement when seeing athletes really excel and move onto DI to DIII schools for both field hockey and lacrosse in college.

“Turning an athlete into a great lacrosse player is a fun challenge,” Parsley said. “I understand the struggles of learning a new sport because I had never played lacrosse until I went to Denison and was able to be successful through hard work and good influences.”

A major asset to Parsley coaching is to help the athletes develop their skills. She stated that she notices that as a team develops, she sees the benefits from it as it helps the athletes navigate their way through college.

As both a coach and mom Parsley understands the importance of having fun while setting both students and athletes on the right path to success.

“We try to focus on the fun of being on a sport as well because high school can be a stressful time for everyone and sports should be an avenue for healthy exercise and fun,” Parsley said.

STUDENTS MAJORING IN THE ARTS

BY MICAH ORGAN (‘19) espite the recent emphasis that has been placed on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and business fields, some students are choosing to stay true to their passions while trying to establish careers in the arts.

“I started [doing theatre] when I was 8, and I knew pretty soon that that was what I wanted to do,” said senior True Chin-Parker, an aspiring Western Michigan University Musical Theatre major.

“And I just love being able to tell stories, and [I love] the way that theatre and live performance can make people happy.”

According to a 2015 survey conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, only 96,000 out of the sampled 1,895,000 students received an undergraduate degree in fields pertaining to visual and performing arts.

“If I wasn’t pursuing vocal performance, I would probably be pursuing music management,” said senior Olivia Helman, a prospective Baldwin Wallace Conservatory Opera and Vocal Performance major. “Or I would go into psychology. I don’t know. Maybe someday I’ll decide I don’t want to do vocal performance, but right now I’m pretty sure. I know that every 18 yearold says that, though.”

Choosing a college major can be an immensely difficult experience for some students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, roughly 80% of students change their major at least once, and between 20 and 50% of first-year students enter college undecided.

According to another study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, more than half of the bachelor’s degrees earned in the 2015-16 school year were concentrated in six fields: business, health, social sciences, psychology, biological sciences and engineering.

“I want to be a doctor but I kind of want to go into psychiatry and work with people who have PTSD and help them through art to alleviate some of the pain they may feel through this sort of mental illness,” said Mara Shields, a prospective Biology student

Job prospects for arts graduates often do not directly pertain to students’ chosen fields of study.

According to the Data USA website, the most common occupations for arts majors are designers (fashion and interior), teachers and various managerial positions.

Kids who [take] music excel more in math and other classes and, [it] gives them a hobby to have fun with.”

According to an article in The Princeton Review, the best college majors are chosen based on factors such as “job prospects, alumni salaries, and popularity.” While degrees in the arts do not often appear to do well in these categories, opportunities for arts majors extend far beyond where one might think.

“With my degree, people assume that all you can do is perform, but you can also manage opera companies with a vocal performance degree,” Helman said. “A lot of people who say you shouldn’t pursue music don’t know what you can do with it.”

Despite the dissonance between the jobs art majors are finding and the jobs that they want to have, interest in arts-related topics is important to other areas of study. Creativity is a vital skill that often goes untapped in other school subjects, as displayed in a study conducted by psychologist Ellen Winner and professor Lois Hetland. “[People] need to understand the arts,” said senior Charles Ziegert, a prospective Denison University Music Composition and Theatre double-major, “It doesn’t mean you have to do it, you should at least have an experience with it.”

For some students who love the arts, it is the only path that they want to take.

“There’s kind of a societal pressure to not do an artistic major, but I think I’ve always had enough people supporting me that I never felt that it was something I couldn’t do,” Chin-Parker said.
