ith the school year in full swing, added stresses begin to arise with students.

Several students get overwhelmed with the thoughts of projects, essays and tests. While this is a big issue, it leads to bigger issues like Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). For these reasons, Caden McDermott writes on S.A.D. and its effects on students.

Due to Covid-19, a lot of changes have occurred around our school, so Ella Kunar explains the Covid protocols changes. Due to mental health issues, our district recently participated in the Signs of Suicide training, which Bella Cox details. I provide an overview of Ski Club, a new club this year, and Caden McDermott explores the issues with new Granville Instagram accounts.

In our opinion section, our staff editorial addresses the recent closure of the gym for lunches. Danielle Varrasso argues for a winter formal, and Ella Kunar writes about how she believes that New Year resolutions should not be a thing because they raise unrealistic expectations for the New Year.

With February right around the corner, Ella Mork and Bella Cox decided to write about different ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Bella Cox made a quiz to help you learn what your love language is. While TikTok has had quite the negative effect on schools and everyday life, they have also had a positive effect on students all around. Caden McDermott writes a feature story on the TikTok hacks that have worked.

their seasons and they seem to be on a great track for success. Madeline Barker has covered every winter sport and how their season has begun. Kaison Durham had a sit down talk with track star Nathan Newsom on how his indoor track season is going. Our sports column, Sports with Sanders by Abby Sanders, talks about the need for college athletes to be paid. Lydia Priano writes a sports feature giving tips on people who are interested in wrestling, and Kaison Durham writes out the Superbowl Predictions for 2022.

To close out this issue, Bella Cox writes a detailed review on the new Marvel Spider-Man movie that many say is the best movie that Marvel has ever made. Danielle Varrasso writes a review on 'Sing 2' directed by Garth Jennings and starring Tori Kelly, Letitia Wright, and many other amazing actors and actresses.

NEWS BRIEFS SUBSTITUTE TEACHER GUIDELINES CHANGED

BY COLDEN KADLIC With Covid-19 constantly taking teachers and students in and out of the workplace, districts across the state are in desperate need of substitute teachers. In response to the pandemic, the Ohio Department of Education has granted the authority to issue a onetime, non-renewable 1 Year Temporary Non-Bachelor’s Substitute Teaching License for the 2021-22 School year.

Becuase no post-secondary degree is required, the State of Ohio has seen an increase in substitute teachers. In particular, Granville Schools has added an additional 19 substitute teachers since the addition of this bill. Despite the fact that the district has raised the daily substitute teacher rate, substitute teachers are still needed.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

BY MADELINE BARKER As the price of higher education continues to rise, more and more seniors are looking into scholarships to help them cover expenses including tuition, books, room and board, etc. There are so many scholarships available and not only are they available online but in each Daily Announcement send out by the district and are linked on the Granville Village Exempted School website and on Schoology.

SIGNS OF SUICIDE

Don't be silent when you see the signs

BY BELLA COX o raise awareness of depression signs and to encourage students to seek help for themselves or their friends, the school cpresented the Signs of Suicide (SOS) program to sophomore students on Jan. 10-11. SOS is a nationally recognized suicide prevention program offered by The Center for Suicide Prevention and Research (CSPR) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

The school counselors worked collaboratively with the CSPR staff at Nationwide to plan and present the program.

The sophomore students were guided through a video and discussion so that they can “learn to identify the warning signs of suicide and depression,” according to the high school newsletter. Teachers Sara Sharp, Karly Worrall, Chris Powell and Dana Decker received special training to present the program.

The goal is to reduce youth suicides by teaching students and staff to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide and depression in themselves and others and to follow the ACT® message • Acknowledge that you are seeing signs of depression or suicide in yourself or a friend and that it is serious.

• Let your friend know how much you Care about them and that you are concerned that they need help.

• Tell a trusted adult that you are worried about yourself or a friend.

After the learning session, the students then completed a seven-question questionnairea as a brief screening for depression and suicidal behavior.

If the students show any signs of suicide in their responses, they were immediately pulled out of class to meet with a triage team for a risk assessment, according to Cosgrove.

dren’s helped support the student population on those two days.

In randomized controlled studies, the SOS program showed a decrease of 40-64 percent in self-reported suicide attempts by students, according to a pamphlet published by Nationwide Children's Hospital. Schools that have implemented SOS report they feel safer and more prepared to manage suicidal behavior of students.

To minimize learning disruptions, Cosgrove encourage sophomore teachers to assign seat work on those days. " We feel this is a valuable, evidence based, prevention program that is backed by Nationwide Children’s Hospital," school counselor Brandi Cosgrove wrote in an email to teachers.

Students also found the program to be valuable.

“This curriculum can be viewed as helpful towards certain students and definitely not a waste of time,” sophomore Alayna Kale said.

Alayna did add that she believes that “all grades should take it every year.”

Why does this curriculum only target sophomores? Nationwide Children's Hospital's protocol is that two grades must be chosen to participate in the SOS curriculum. If all grades took part in the program, there would be too many students and not enough staff to take address student needs.

Granville chose seventh and eleventh grades, according to princiapl Matt Durst.

“Having the sophomores take it in the high school is the best way to go about SOS,” Durst said.

COVID PROTOCOLS CHANGE AGAIN

BY ELLA KUNAR ith rising cases of Covid-19 and the new omicron variant running rapidly throughout the United States, Covid protocols are changing within the school.

W

Mask Mandate Superintendent Jeff Brown implemented a district-wide mask mandate starting on Jan. 10. It will be effective for at least a two week period of time, according to Principal Matthew Durst.

Many students were exposed to Covid because of the increase of travel and gathering with family for the holidays.

“We have had a significant increase in the number of cases coming into the schools due to winter break and the increase in the number of cases in Licking County as a whole,” Brown said in a statement on the school website regarding the mask mandate.

Students have mixed feelings about the mask mandate.

Some students believe that wearing masks does not make sense because many students do not wear masks in extracurricular activities and outside of school.

“Wearing masks inconsistently is not making a difference,” senior Ava Poling said.

Some students believe that the mask mandate is not enough and the school should be doing more.

“I think masks are essential to keep students safe and in the building,” junior Chris Barker said, “I also wish that we were taking proper social distancing measures in the lunchroom.”

Closing Gym for Lunch Despite increasing Covid numbers, the administration decided to close the gym for lunch and move all students to the cafeteria for lunch.

Students in the previous two years have had the option to sit in the gym for extra social distancing. All students are now required to sit in the cafeteria.

“We moved the sixth period lunch

into the lunch room in November and we haven’t seen an increase in exposure due to the lunch tables,” principal Matthew Durst said.

Durst said that changing from two rooms into one has not made Covid quarantining or positive cases worse.

After transitioning sixth period into the cafeteria, the administration decided period five could follow suit.

“We didn’t see any increase in transmission [of Covid] in the lunch room with the Covid positives we have,” Durst said.

Some students enjoyed moving into the lunchroom.

“I am happy to be back in the lunchroom,” senior Liv Piatt said.

“The gym was never clean and we never had a table to eat at.”

However, some students are not happy with the transition into the cafeteria for lunch.

“I understand that it's hard for the teachers to monitor us in the gym,” said senior Davidson Jump, “but with rising Covid numbers, it makes way less sense to move everyone into the lunch room.”

Winter formal High school administration has decided against a winter formal this year.

The administration had to work hard to pull off Homecoming, according to Durst. The high school could have Homecoming was because there was an outdoor option.

“I think it would be too hard to pull off a winter formal indoors and not have a super-spreader event,” Durst said.

Some students are upset with this decision.

“I am really sad that we cannot have winter formal this year,” senior Shelene Day said. “So much has been taken away from us and I thought some things would finally be back for the last semester of our senior year.”

Durst said he would rather focus on having Prom than winter formal because it is a much more important event than winter formal.

“Let's push energy into having Prom,” Durst said.

SKI CLUB OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS Ski Club returns after being canceled for the '20-'21 year

BY ALYSHA WALLACE long with the winter season having started, another club in GHS has kicked off again.

Ski Club is a place where students can meet up on the slopes and hang out. This club allows for students with a common interest to come together and spend time doing what they love to do.

In order to join the club, students have to have a signed permission slip from a parent or legal guardian along with an $85 participation fee.

This fee goes towards providing transportation for the students to get from the school to Snow Trails. Then members must go online to the ski resort website in order to purchase a season pass to go skiing. Snow Trails offers a club pass discount as long as a discount code is provided from Adviser Dianne Mcdonald. This is the first year that the ski club was added to the high school. McDonald used to be the ski club adviser for the Dublin Coffman Ski club when she was a teacher there.

The club goes to Snow Trails six times throughout the winter season.

Their first trip was on Jan. 6. Then, they will continue to go every Thursday through mid February.

Due to busing restrictions, the club is capped at 51 students and there are currently 51 students a part of the club. Every student is eligible to participate in the club on a first come, first serve basis.

GHS INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS CAUSE DRAMA

BY CADEN MCDERMOTT n these past few months, it has become a trend on Instagram for students to create accounts showcasing the antimaskers, public displays of affection and sleeping students of Granville High School. These accounts have instigated drama and multiple lengthy arguments in the comments of their posts, and now the school has decided to step in.

The full list of these accounts includes ghs_slumps, ghs. anti_maskers, ghs_fitchecks, ghs_bathroomshoes, bad_ posture_ghs and ghs_pda. Each of these accounts have quickly amassed over 200 followers.

On January 14, principal Matthew Durst released a Schoology message regarding the accounts, which effectively established that it was against the code of conduct to take or post pictures of students and staff on school property without consent.

“Within minutes of putting out that Schoology message we saw posts from the anti-maskers account come down,” Durst said. “There were also a few that deleted the whole account.”

The owners of ghs_pda and bad_posture_ghs did not want to risk receiving any sort of disciplinary action from the school and made the decision to delete their accounts. However, it is not that simple for the school to do something about these pages.

“If someone posts something outside of school, not at a school event, there's nothing the school can do about that, but if it impacts the educational environment then the school can intervene,” Durst said. “It is hard to determine what impacts the educational environment. It is a grey area.”

The main issue with these accounts is that many of the people are not giving their consent to being photographed and having their picture posted.

“Some may see these posts as funny, but the consent to take the picture makes a huge difference,” Durst said.

The most popular of these accounts, with 470 followers, is ghs_slumps, which features students sleeping in school. It was the first of these accounts to be made.

“I didn’t really mind being on there,” said senior Cameron Harris, who has been on ghs_slumps four times.“I thought it was funny. It is a much needed breath of fresh

air around the school.”

The ghs.anti_maskers account has an alternative motive for their posts. Rather than posting pictures of students for laughs and a few likes, this account is attempting to shame and expose students for not properly wearing their masks.

“I could not care less about them posting a picture of me,” senior Bobby Vahalik said.

Ghs_slumps highlights how overworked and overstressed students have become, so many kids feel so tired that an Instagram account was made to document them.

The Instagram accounts are not all bad in the eyes of the school; some accounts are still seen as positive, even from the point of view of Durst.

“I do not want to make an absolute statement that all of these accounts are bad, like on the fit checks one it looks like everyone knows that a picture is being taken of them,” Durst said. “That is a very different story from a creeper picture from across a classroom where the other person doesn’t know that it's being taken."

SHINING A LIGHT ON SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER

BY CADEN MCDERMOTT ith the winter months finally arriving, the temperature starts to drop, the snow begins sticking to the ground and a holiday spirit still permeates our quaint downtown. However, for some students it is not a winter wonderland; instead they anticipate shorter days, less sunlight and seasonal depression Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly referred to as SAD or seasonal depression, is a mood disorder characterized by depression that occurs at the same time every year, most commonly during the winter months. In the past, SAD was commonly referred to as the winter blues; it is important not to confuse the dip in mood that winter blues describes with the depressive levels of difficulty that occur with seasonal affective disorder.

According to the Cleveland Clinic and SAMHSA, symptoms of SAD include anxiety, social isolation, and loss of motivation and interest in hobbies. For people who experience SAD in the winter, common symptoms are also excess sleepiness and overeating.

“It’s hard to discern where seasonal affective disorder begins and where depression ends because the symptoms are so similar,'' school counselor Cody Masters said. “There is a spectrum, for sure; some people just get a little bit of the winter blues, while others feel it heavily.”

What differentiates SAD from depression and the “winter blues” is it occurs around seasonal change and is not just isolated to the winter months. The effects and criteria of SAD is similar to depression, however, SAD repeats on a seasonal pat-

“We know every year around this time, there will be an uptick in students coming in for depression or anxiety, normally dealing with grades or exams,” Masters said. “There is a clear dip in grades right around the end of the second semester.”

The drop in grades around the seasonal change can be attributed to

a loss of motivation from SAD. Many members of the high school struggle with motivation during winter mornings because of the darkness. Along with the grades, there is an evident drop in emotional state in students and staff.

“I noticed in the winters that I would tend to have a dip in my mood,” science teacher Diane Mc-

Donald said. “Somewhere in the midfall, I feel like students become more tired, they don’t handle stress as well, and overall struggle more” While there is an increase in students' demand for mental health assistance, Diane McDonald points out that this uptick could be attributed to a variety of factors.

“This could correspond with all sorts of stuff,” McDonald said. “The curriculum is getting harder, they are not getting the sunlight they need, stuff they said yes to in the summer starting to build up, but it was around the same time that I knew I needed to start taking vitamin D” According to a research study conducted by Harvard University, there is a link between the amount of sunlight and seasonal affective disorder. Sunlight plays a role in the production of melatonin and serotonin, and limited production of these causes less sleep and mood problems.

“With the sun setting earlier, the day feels like it is over at 5:30,” Masters said. “There is a strong correlation with productivity and sunlight.”

Adjusting to daylight savings can be a challenge, suddenly the sunsets at 6 o’clock and the days feel like they have been cut in half.

“Daylight savings is the worst day of the year for me,” Masters said.

Ohio’s weather makes it hard to manage the Vitamin D in the body.

“Living in Ohio, after Nov. 19 all the way through Valentine's Day, your body does not make enough vitamin D,” McDonald said.

Seasonal Affective Disorder can create feelings of loneliness and social isolation, so taking part in a

sport or other activity may help boost mood “When I coached basketball, that was one thing that I thought helped,” Masters said. “The darkness was going to be there regardless, but this gave me something else to put my energy into and allowed me to be more social.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely exacerbated the effects of seasonal affective disorder, considering the number of limits that were put into place, including social distancing, limits on people gathering and online school.

Those dealing with the effects of SAD may feel hopeless and that there is no way to escape their symptoms; however, there are a number of different ways to fight back against SAD. Some of the remedies include getting more daylight, exercising, taking vitamin D supplements, reducing stress and using a daylight lamp.

For McDonald, she found that vitamin D supplementation helped to increase her mood during the winter months and boost her overall health.

“Through the D Minder app, I learned that once school started my body was not producing Vitamin D,” Mcdonald said. “So I decided to start taking vitamin D the whole school year and it definitely supports a more positive outlook for me personally.”

It is important for students going through this to talk to someone, they are not alone in this. If you are feeling this way and think you are suffering from seasonal affective disorder, talk to a guidance counselor or your own doctor.

CLOSING GYM IS A BAD DECISION Increasing number of students eating in cafeteria during a Covid spike makes no sense STAFF EDITORIAL espite Omicron, the most infectious variant of Coronavirus, running rampant throughout the United States, our school’s administration has opted to move an additional 90 students from the gym into the cafeteria for lunch.

These students were forced out of the gym on Monday, Jan. 10, due to the shortage of custodians. Currently, the custodians are unable to clean both areas each day.

Ro, pronounced R naught, is a number that measures the rate at which diseases are transferred from person to person. The greater the Ro, the greater the rate of infection. The original SARS-CoV-2 has Ro ~2.79, the Delta variant has Ro ~5.08, and the Omicron variant has Ro 7.0 or greater, according to the website Vitals.

Based on the increased rate of infection, closing the gym for lunch and moving all students to the cafeteria is completely illogical.

Principal Matt Durst argues that the 2-week mask mandate put in effect on Jan. 10 will assist in eliminating the omicron variant spreading throughout the school; however, masks are not worn during lunch nor are any precautionary measurements taken to eliminate the spread of Covid-19 in the cafeteria. are in place and social distancing isn’t being practiced.

A simple solution to this problem has been provided to the staff by several seniors who have argued for off-campus lunch or the return of the senior lounge.

On top of this, another possible solution is hiring more custodians; however, the district administration argues that ABM, the company the district uses to contract custodial services, is unable to find people to work. The reason ABM is unable to find workers is that custodians are significantly underpaid, underappreciated and do not get good benefits.

Granville High School is a complete contradiction of themselves, saying that they wish to protect their students yet continue to make irrational moves to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

We urge the administration to return these students back into the gym for the sake of our safety and those around us. If this is unfeasible, we suggest providing off-campus lunch for seniors because it takes roughly 100 students out of both 5th and 6th-period lunches.

Taking these seniors out of the lunchroom satisfies our wishes and helps protect those around us.

WINTER TEAMS ON TRACK FOR ANOTHER RECORD-SETTING SEASON

BY MADELINE BARKER fter a very successful fall sports season, the winter athletes are doing their part to bring home more hardware.

Indoor Track Last year, the boys indoor track team took home first place at the state meet and seem to have grown accustomed to it. Senior Nathan Newsome, who was a vital part of the boys indoor track win last year is still playing an integral part if the team. He even set a new school record in the 60 meter dash. One runner to watch is senior Regina Rose who led the girls cross country team to win the state meet and is now committed to Bowling Green University for Cross Country and Track & Field.

One relay to watch is the Boys 4x400 relay including seniors Dylan Christian, Nathan Newsome and Aiden Flaherty and junior Christian Barker. Senior Ava Minton is having an amazing season with a PR in the 200 meter dash and is a vital part of several

girls relays including the 4x200 meter relay.

Swimming Despite many setbacks due to Covid-19 protocol and cancelled meets, the swim team remains resilient. Senior Olivia Muscarello maintained not only several injuries but also tested positive for Covid-19 and was still determined to bounce back.

Bouncing back from a major shoulder injury, Muscarello took her competitors by surprise, placing 5th overall last Wednesday, also earning herself a personal record time of 1.17 in the 100 yard Backstroke.

Girls Basketball After having a phenomenal season record of 27-1 for the 2020-2021 season, girls basketball is determined to show they still got it. In the January 12 game at Newark Catholic, they maintained control of the court and finished the game with a score of 52-32.

Boys Basketball Enduring a tough start to the season on December 15, the boys basketball team bounced back, most recently, beating Pataskala in a nail biter game with a final score of 46-42. Most recently, they won 51-49 against Licking Valley.

Competition Cheer After dominating the opposition at the 2021 State cheer competition, the cheerleaders are determined to keep their reputation and show up and show out. Because the football team had an extended season, the cheerleaders also did and had minimal rest time but bounced back quickly, taking home the first place title. Their nearest competition will be at OSU on Sunday January 23 and in March, the team will head down to Orlando, Florida to compete in nationals.

Bowling The bowling team is having a very fun season. They are 6-3 overall and 6-2 in the LCL with the goal of winning the LCL or getting second or third overall. The Bowling postseason begins mid-February with the LCL Tournament, followed by the Sectional Tournament, with the goal of getting the entire team to Districts and some individual bowlers to the State Tournament.

Wrestling The Wrestling team has had a very successful season and is looking forward to the postseason. Their current record is 5-0.

finished fourth in the nation, we were unable to go to nationals due to Covid. So the most exciting part is being able to go for sure this time and have that experience in my last year of track.

Q: Do you plan on continuing track after high school?

A: That's the plan. I'm not sure where I'm going yet, but I want to run at the next level.

Q: What are your predictions for this season?

A: I am focusing on my main event this year and having a lot of success.

So I predict that I will keep getting faster and hopefully allow myself to place at the state championship.

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to underclassmen running track what would it be?

A: Track is just as hard mentally as it is physically. If you have a bad race, don't let it get in your head. You just have to move on and prepare yourself for the next one.

A: That would definitely have to be winning the state championship as a team, as well as placing fourth in the nation as a 4x200 relay.

A: This is the first year I have really taken track seriously. I decided against playing football this year and focused on training over the summer and for fall for track.

Q: What are you most excited for about nationals?

Q: What's the most difficult part about running track?

A: Not putting too much pressure on yourself. If you stress out too much before a race, it throws everything off and can cost you heavily.

Q: How would you describe the spirit of the team this year?

A: It's definitely a lot different of an atmosphere with all of our varsity team graduating last year; however, it's a new type of spirit that has started to grow on me.

SPORTS COLLEGE ATHLETES MUST BE PAID

W

hile college athletes are now allowed to make money through social media, endorsement deals and personal SPORTS WITH merchandise, the SANDERS NCAA still bars universities from paying athletes with a salary.

Over the past few years, college athletes have been taking a stand and sharing their growing opinions on needing to be paid for the time and work they put into their sport. While in college, an athlete’s life revolves around their sport, and outside of schoolwork, practice and games, they do not have time to hold a steady job.

College sports programs make billions of dollars each year. In 2019 alone, it was estimated that the NCAA brought in $18.9 billion through ticket sales, TV deals and sponsorships. While some of this money is needed for the upkeep of facilities, salaries for coaches and other staff members, and the expenses of each team, there is still a huge amount of money leftover. This money goes into the pockets of universities instead of the athletes who actually did the work to earn the money.

Fewer than 2% of college athletes go on to become professional athletes, so for an athlete who dedicates their entire college career to their sport, it is only fair that they are given a small part of the large revenue brought in by their program.

While not all colleges will be able to pay their athletes, it is important that top level athletes competing for well-funded schools be paid for their dedication and hard work.

LOS ANGELES RAMS POISED TO WIN SUPER BOWL

BY KAISON DURHAM he playoffs have begun in the NFL. We have now moved on to the divisional round. With four games remaining, the playoffs are starting to heat up. With some new faces in the divisional round, including the Bengals, Titans, Rams, and 49ers all stirring up the pot. This should be an interesting ending to a great season.

The Green Bay Packers are once again favorites to win Super Bowl 56, with the betting odds being 15-4. But they have some serious competition to make it difficult for them.

The reigning champs, Tampa Bay Bucs, are always posing a challenge with legendary quarterback Tom Brady at the helm of that amazing offense.

Of course you can't forget the 2020 champs, The Chiefs, with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes hoping to lead to another trophy.

The Tennessee Titans have snuck in as the one seed in the AFC, with star running back Derrick Henry back from an injury he suffered in week 8 they are looking scary.

They are getting to the quarterback easily with Aaron Donald on their D-line. With the pickup of Mathew Stafford during the offseason, the offense has been terrific. Cooper Kupp is having one of the greatest seasons ever for a wide receiver in NFL history and the Rams are on a roll. With the mid-season pickups of Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr. adding some depth to their roster they are unstoppable. Mathew Stafford has won the last two of his three starts against Brady. If there is anyone to stop Brady it's Matthew Stafford.

Earlier in the season the Rams took the win over the Bucs, Stafford had an incredible game and is hoping to do it again. But With the Bucs up next the Rams are in for a serious challenge.

Tom Brady is once again having a MVP caliber season. Mike Evans will line up against Jalen Ramsey with a matchup we have been waiting for.

Devin White is leading the Bucs defense at linebacker, it will be tough for the Rams to get through him. Both teams are heating up and ready to fire on all cylinders. This divisional game should be a shootout and one for the ages.

hough wrestling is a very popular sport, there are a lot of different aspects of wrestling that most people do not know about. Gaining or losing weight are both big parts of wrestling because wrestlers have to be in a certain weight class. This can cause them to rapidly gain or lose weight. Another aspect of wrestling are the mental challenges. Matches really test an athlete's mental toughness. During a match, if a wrestler is not completely focused, their opponent can use that to their advantage.

LOSING WEIGHT

Any wrestler would know that losing weight is a very common thing in wrestling. Usually, wrestlers also have a very short amount of time to lose weight in between matches.

There are a variety of different ways to do it.

“To lose weight quickly I usually sit in a really hot bath with epsom salt in it or a sauna,” junior Carson Miller said. “Doing anything that will put the water out of you will help you lose weight quickly.”

When people do things that create a lot of heat in their body, for example going in a sauna, they are creating a lot of sweat, which helps take the water out of their body.

GAINING WEIGHT

People typically think of wrestlers having to lose weight, but there are situations where they also

have to put on weight, too.

A lot of the time, people assume that to put on weight wrestlers just eat a lot of unhealthy foods. This is actually not true. Wrestlers have to eat a lot of foods that will help them gain muscle, not fat.

“To gain weight quickly I usually eat a high protein diet or eat foods that are dense with high calories,” junior Carson Miller said.

By eating a lot of protein, the wrestler is making their muscles stronger, which makes them have a greater mass.

CHALLENGES

In every sport athletes come across a lot of challenges that they must face. Wrestling is not only a physically challenging sport, but it is also a very tough mental sport.

“The hardest part about wrestling is probably keeping a level head and

staying calm during matches,” junior Logan McFarland said.

If a wrestler is not calm and focused during a match, their opponent can beat them more easily. If someone's opponent is distracted then they will be much easier to beat.

Wrestlers need to keep a clear head so that they can wrestle at their best during a match.

SUCCESS

The best feeling when playing any sport is when you win. Winning makes an athlete feel achieved and it gives them more confidence.

In wrestling, one of the ways that you can win is by pinning someone. It takes a lot of hard work to get someone pinned. There is not a specific time that it will take for someone to get pinned.

“It usually takes me about two minutes to get someone pinned, but the time is different for everyone,” freshman Connor Jude said.

To pin someone, a wrestler has to put their opponent on their back and then hold their shoulder blades on the mat for two seconds. Once a wrestler gets their opponent in that position and they hold them down for two seconds, they have won.

Sing 2 was released 22 December 2021 and it was super impressive with its upbeat music and amazing plot.

BY DANIELLE VARRASSO any times a person will say the first movie is better than the sequel, but the movie “Sing 2” contradicts that normal pattern. It is a hilarious, light-hearted and sentimental film that will be hard to top.

Famous actors from the 2016 original like Reese Witherspoon, Matthew McConaughey and Tori Kelly are back for the sequel and are joined by a new cast of characters.

“Sing 2” follows the characters as they try to take their show to the next level. They want to perform in RedShore City, which is like the Las Vegas of our world. Performing their show there is a big dream and they must face a lot of adversity on their way.

After a scout gives them a bad review and ruins their shot to be in the upcoming show, the group must find a sense of determination to prove themselves and show that they deserve to be there. In order to do this, they head to the capital on a long road trip.

On this trip, the audience is introRated: PG duced to more characters who bring Run Time: a lot to the table. The big-time music 1 hr, 50 min producer is a wolf named Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) who is an aggressive, strict and selfish antagonist.

His daughter, Porscha (Halsey), though self-centered at the beginning, has huge character development and becomes a key new character in the film and in their final production.

Another addition is a cat named Nooshy (Letitia Wright), who plays a big role in Johnny’s story as she teaches him how to dance. She is an easy character to love with her spunky, relatable teenage personality.

Probably the most iconic new character would be Clay Calloway, a famous singer who has not been heard from for years, who is grieving over the loss of his wife. The way he overcomes the challenges and finds happiness within music again contributes to the overall message.

Other key performances are Johnny’s emotional version of “A Sky Full of Stars” and the final performance of “Your Song Saved My Life” by U2 with the porcupine Ash and Clay Calloway. One of the best new songs was the one Porscha performed called “Could Have Been Me” by Halsey, which tells an underlying message of not wanting to have any regret.

Viewers can learn something from each character’s struggles. It shows a real world perspective of how hard it is to make a dream come true, but that it is possible with hard work and passion. It also shows to not give up even when it seems like you have hit rock bottom.

The movie also is absolutely hilarious. Many people were fond of Gunther in the first film and he gets a bigger role in the second film. This character’s voice, his movements and his funny comments made me laugh. Mrs. Crawley, although more of a background character, never fails to do something silly.

From every aspect, “Sing 2” was simply amazing. While the film’s intended audience is younger viewers, it can be enjoyed by all age groups.
