he weather is finally starting to warm up and teachers are starting to review for exams, which means the year is finally coming to an end. In keeping with tradition, this last issue is a tribute to our senior class, the Class of 2018. The BluePrints staff also decided to make this “Senior Issue” childhood themed, which means you will find references to the 2000s throughout (Photo courtesy of Jacquelyn this issue. Arora Photography) In this issue, you’ll find out 15 ways to relive your childhood, how to cook in your dorm room and what senior trips people are going on. You’ll read about which year of high school is the best, how people feel about playing a sport in college and what seniors are rooming together in college next year. You can look back on your childhood while reading about books we’ve read throughout school, trends and pop culture from the 2000s and people’s favorite thing from their childhood. We hope this issue allows you to reminisce about your childhood and remember the Class of 2018. It has been such a pleasure to lead the BluePrints staff this year and I am incredibly proud of all the work we have accomplished. Thank you for your support for our publications. Making the most of your high school years

BY HANNAH MUSICK ‘19 igh school is a great stepping stone in life. It is the start of adulthood and just one piece of the puzzle to the bigger picture. High school is filled with great memories and friends that you spend four years with. Even though you might lose touch with some of them, you will always have memories that you shared. My favorite memory from high school would be all of the dances that I attended. Every dance was memorable in some way and will always be a favorite part of high school when I look back at everything that happened. The best part of dances were going shopping with my mom and picking out dresses. Getting to wear so many different dresses and getting my hair and makeup done for each dance was always fun. Not only did I get to be dressed up, I got to spend a night with my friends dancing and just spending time together as a school. Another great part of dances were pictures. Gathering all of your friends together and taking cute pictures with ev-

eryone dressed up. Being able to have all of the photos and memories for a lifetime. Memories like dances, football games, pep rallies and everything that students take for granted will always be a part of you when you think back to when you were in high school. One thing I can say is that I have learned in high school is that four years go by fast and every homework, test, project and worksheet matters. Starting off strong freshman year is very beneficial and will help you in the long run. Not only will you have more options for college, but when classes start to get harder you will have a buffer. One of the most challenging things is bringing a GPA up. By starting strong it will not only make you less stressed, it will make senior year and college searching more enjoyable. Even though high school is only a small portion of your life, it is still important and everyone should live it to the fullest. It is one of the only times you do not have many responsibilities and can be a teenager.

25 Ways to relive your childhood 13

BY RILEY VRADENBURG (‘18) AND KENZIE CHESROWN (‘18) s we inch closer to graduation and starting a new chapter of our lives, it is important to remember all of the opportunities we have had throughout the years. Your childhood is full of crazy memories. These 25 ways will help you to relive those memories before leaving your hometown.

A

1/Draw with Chalk

You’ll probably make a huge mess, but it has to rain eventually! Writing your name a billion times- possibly with the addition of your current crush’s last name-is always fun.

2/Zoopals

Eat all of your food on Zoopals. Every single mom bought these plates for their kids and friends. As soon as your classmates see you whip out a Zoopal- instant friendships.

3/Play on a Razor Scooter

Good for the environment and for the soul. A ride on a razor scooter never hurt anyone (Warning: watch out for those ankles).

4/Go to the Playground

Invite both boys and girls- it’s time for tag. Awkwardly split into gender divided teams...you’ll end up playing two separate games. You’ll eventually forget the other squad is there until you have to carpool home.

5/Re-watch Old Disney

Nothing is better than a “High School Musical” marathon. Netflix offers a variety of throwbacks for this specific occasion.

6/Lake Hudson

Ride to Lake Hudson on the bike path or through town. Enjoy the lukewarm, green water as you make jokes about the fish that are surely lurking just beneath the surface. After a long day in the sun, go up to Knuckleheads with your friends.

7/Amusement Park

Take a crew to Kings Island; split up based on your comfort level with roller coasters. Make sure to spend money on bags and bags

of candy, slushies, pop and greasy food. This will be your fuel for the long day ahead. Try to keep it down during the rides,

8/Fish

Assign each friend a numbered fish and randomly choose one from a bucket. The lucky fish owner can pull a prize (hopefully extra recess) Have an adult scooter around your group of friends as you all chant the “Jaws” theme song.

9/ Facebook Messaging

Message a friend from school who’s online. It does not matter if you are not close, just create awkward conversation about classwork, REC sports, and who you “like-like.”

9/Four Square

Have a Four Square tournament. Truck stop and cherry bomb are ON! Preferably have multiple squares going at a time and form a bracket.

10/Halloween

Go as your favorite childhood character for Halloween. There can never be too many Hannah Montanas, but you could always relive your favorite Halloween as a fairy, princess, super hero, ninja or any other favorite costumes.

11/Party

Have a class party for each holiday- go all out! Celebrate every single thing you can even if it is absolutely ridiculous like the 100th day of school. If there’s no Capri Suns, you’re doing it wrong.

12/ Flash-mob

Preferably to “We are Family,” perform for your peers. It won’t be a secret, but you will all pretend it is. Show up to the pep rally and surprise all of your peers.

13/ZAP

ZAP a friend. Hopefully their crush, and if they say no, no foul. Throw in an occasional person who is not their crush just to see if they will follow through with the harmless game.

14/Make a Cootie Catcher

This will tell you all about your life. Make the messages very specific to one person and have that person play along so you look like a real life fortune teller.

17/Birthday Celebration

Have a themed birthday party and hand out goody bags to the guests. Some fun themes include: beach, princess, pirates, dogs and many others.

18/Webkinz

Login to Webkinz. Your pets miss you. They have been starving for several years now. They have missed their job at the hair salon tooo many times.

19/Camping

Go on a camping trip with your friends and eat worms. Other than insects, apple juice and milk will be your only source of nutrients for the weekend.

20/ABC’s

Have your own ABC countdown. “Zip in and zip out” will be here before you know it! Make sure to have a watermelon seed spitting contest, kickball tournament and tie-dye.

21/Washington D.C.

Road trip to D.C. with a group of four. Only eat McDonald’s during the day or historical role play buffets. You’re definitely going to crave the pizza you will get every night.

22/Sleepovers

Ask your mom to pick you up from a friend’s house. Hide because you don’t want to leave. Leave one of your belongings behind so your parents are forced to bring you back.

23/Cool Outfits

Wear lots of layers. Every girl wore leggings under skirts and a spaghetti strap tank top over a short sleeve t-shirt to abide by the brutal dress code rules.

24/Holiday Shopping

Buy all holiday presents at the Jingle Bell Shop. Make sure to ask for money from your parents to go spend it on their gifts. They’ll surely love it.

18

15/Silly Bandz

Go buy Silly Bandz. The only way to pull these off is to wear at least 20 of your favorite shapes all on one wrist, all at the same time. All of your friends will be jealous.

16/Go to a Play

Take friends to play. Make sure to leave five minutes in due to content. Protest against the injustice on the blacktop. Classic class of 2018. blueprintsonline.org

Seniors plan final trips before heading off to college

A

BY EMMA NAILLE (‘18) s the school year winds down, all the seniors are planning what they are going to do next. Some seniors are planning senior trips before they head off to college or the next phase of their life as an opportunity to spend some quality time with friends or family before they leave home. Senior Gabriella Schnaidt knows she wants to go on a trip, but hasn’t planned out of all the details yet. “I’d love to go on a road trip with my friends,” Schnaidt said. She has been thinking about this trip since freshman year and wants to see some different and unconventional places. “I’d love to go to fun destinations, quirky, weird ones like the biggest ball of yarn or go hiking on a random path that we find,” Schnaidt said. “Just some things you can’t do everyday but that are cheap since we’re seniors, we don’t have a lot of money.” Senior Maura Masterson is planning a trip to the western states to spend some time with her mom. “My mom and I usually like to do a mother-daughter trip every year, but we haven’t in a while since we’ve had college visits so this is kind of our last thing together before I go to college,” Masterson said. She’s been out West before, but is planning to see some different places. “I’ve only been to Northern California and Arizona but this time we’re going to see some things we haven’t seen yet.” Masterson and her mom just decided last week to go on this trip, though they have been thinking about going on a vacation like this for a long time. “We have both talked about going out west, for a while and we finally saw this opportunity and thought it would be a good time,” Masterson said. “I’m old enough to appreciate walking around now.” Masterson is most looking forward to seeing the Redwoods in California. Senior Lexi Marelli is thinking about taking a trip to Chicago with her friends to go to Lollapalooza, a music festival. Marelli and her friends have been planning this trip for a few weeks. “For about a month we’ve been talking about it,” Marelli said. “It’s a four-day concert and it would be fun to go with a bunch of friends since it’s our last thing before we all leave,” Marelli said. Last year, a group of senior took their senior trips with their mothers. opinion

The Class of 2019 should have a senior trip

A

BY KEEGAN VANMETER (‘19) cross the country, high school seniors are taking school-sponsored trips with their classmates, but Granville seniors don’t get that opportunity. I propose that the class of 2019 take a senior trip to Cedar Point next May to create a great long lasting memory that all seniors can leave with. I also feel that there can be many benefits from a senior trip; for example, the students can gain knowledge about specific place that may become symbolic in one’s life, this trip will also serve as one last major memory to leave high school on a good note with. “I really loved our senior trip because I got to hang with all of my guys before we headed off to do big things,” Newark Catholic alum Kyle Gibson said of his senior class trip to Washington, D.C. Hanging out as a whole grade one last time would allow us to leave high school, hopefully, on good terms with everyone before we go our separate ways. “I think we should have a senior trip because it would be fun to hang with everyone in our grade before we head out separate ways,” junior Patrick Steyn says. A senior trip is an outstanding idea, but there would be many logistical issues that would make this trip difficult to plan. A major issue would be funding, especially since our levy did not pass, making funds scarce. The easiest way to combat this argument would be for the seniors to pay their way for the trip, which is why we must keep the trip simple. Senior trips are often debated because it may be hard to keep the students under control, however I believe that seniors should have enough maturity to be respectful on the trip. Yet another major issue that could deny our class of a senior trip could be transportation to Cedar Point and back to the school. This issue can be avoided by the seniors driving themselves and carpooling with each other to minimize our students driving. “GCA (Granville Christian Academy) goes to Disney for a senior trip which sounds pretty fun,” junior Kristen Zehnal

said. As our student body president she understands that Disney may be a little extreme, but just a simple trip to Cedar Point could be a great time. Cedar Point would be a great trip because it is nearby, which is good because our students would be driving. This trip would not be super expensive which would be great because we would be paying for it. “I think we should have a senior trip because it would be a great opportunity for our class to come together in our final days and be able to look back at our previous years in high school,” junior Cooper Campbell said. As for chaperones for the trip, many parents would more than willing to attend the trip making sure things stay in line without getting out of hand. This would take multiple teachers out of an awkward position of potentially missing school. Though the trip has not occurred before, and plans are anything but organized, the senior class of 2019 is willing to pull together and make this happen with the help of staff and parents.

High school is meant for growing with your friends and with yourself, this trip gives closure for all those lessons and memories. One last final hooray with the people you have grown up with.

sports

Gracie Denison “I’m super excited to participate in sports in college and I see it as the perfect opportunity to continue what I love to do!”

Rose Sawyers “I’m glad I get the opportunity to play at the next level! It not only lets me continue to play the sport I love, but I get the chance to play with new people and make lifelong friends.”

Maddie Long “College sports are a way for an athlete to continue what they love while making new friends and setting new goals. It creates a nice transition from high school to college because you have friends right when you start.”

Jack Lonzo “I chose to continue playing basketball in college because I love the sport and don’t want to stop after high school.”

Coury Rogers “I think that if you’re considering playing a sport in college, you have to make sure that you will be dedicated. It will be a lot of time, but if you love it then it’s definitely a great path to take!”

Playing sports in college

F

BY KYLEE MCFARLAND (‘18) or some students, I do believe it’s beneficial to play sports in college for several reasons. For me, participating in sports in high school has benefited me more than I could have ever imagined. I’ve made lifelong friends and can say without a doubt I’ll continue to stay in touch with them after we split up. I believe the same can be said for taking part in college sports as well. You get to start your freshman year already knowing people who like the same sport whether they have the same major or not. It’s also good to be active and exercise because it will keep you happy and healthy. When I’m exercising it takes my mind off of all the things that stress me out and help me to relax and better manage that stress. I’ve learned how to manage my time and pace myself whether that’s during a race or making time to study during my free time outside of running. Being a part of a team with scheduled practices and games is beneficial because it will force you to make the most out of the free-time you have. I’ve learned how to get back up and keep pushing no matter how hard life gets and that persistence and hard work pays off especially when my teammates are achieving their goals as well. It truly taught me how to take one for the team and to not be afraid to try new things and challenge myself instead of taking the easy route and sticking to what I’m best at which are all important lessons you can learn through participating in college sports. Being part of sports in high school has been unforgettable from the road trips to meets to the sleepovers on the weekends. So, I believe playing sports in college will be a positive thing. Playing sports may not be for everyone, but that’s okay because you can make friends and create memories through other hobbies as well. Whatever activity you like to do, I advise you to never give it up because the reward is priceless.

Several seniors look ahead to continuing their athletic careers

W

BY ALYSSA CHRISTIAN ‘19 hile the majority of the class of 2018 is finishing up their senior year and looking ahead to their next academic experience, some are also continuing to pursue their athletic interests. Granville has a wide variety of talent, and this is seen in the several sports that people have committed to. These sports include track and field, cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, golf, field hockey, softball, swimming and baseball. Four people on the track and field team alone have decided to continue their athletic career in college. Kylee McFarland recently committed to Ohio Wesleyan University to run track and field and cross country. Another runner who decided to continue then running career is Rosie Lamb who committed in December to Ohio University to run both track and field and cross country as well. ¨OU has the most beautiful campus and I loved the coach and the team¨ Lamb said. Although she is looking forward to the new experience, she says she will miss everything about her high school team. ¨They’re so awesome and I´m not sure how anyone could compare to them¨ Lamb stated. Maddie Long also is running cross country and track and field in college. She committed to Lake Erie College this April and is ¨looking forward to meeting new people who are from all over and trying out different events that are not ran in high school.” In her junior year she took a year off of running, so when this opportunity arose, she did not want to pass it up. Gracie Dennison, who is continuing her track and field experience at Otterbein, is also excited for the future. However, track and field is not the only sport in her schedule for the next four years. She is continuing her soccer career as well. ¨I couldn’t imagine not playing and running in college, both sports are such a huge part of my life¨ Dennison said. Dennison describes Otterbein as ¨a small

school with small class sizes. Both teams are really close and seem like a family. And I love downtown Westerville.¨ This combination served perfectly for what Dennison wanted in a university. Also continuing their soccer careers are Ryan Birgeneau, who recently signed with Canisius College; Natalie Pireu, who is going to West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Rose Sawyers, who committed to the University of Toledo during her sophomore year. Students decide to room together

H

BY KENZIE CHESROWN (‘18) igh school friendships come in all varieties, and most wish to continue them throughout different phases of lifenot just high school. This year, many students decided to continue their friendships in close quarters: as college roommates. Seniors Tessa Oliver and Lauren Schwab have been best friends since age five. Next year, they will both be freshmen at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. “We understand one another and we are really excited to go to the same college because we now we can push one another to be better in school, and just to challenge each other in our faith,” Schwab said. The decision to room with one another was easy and made sense, according to Oliver and Schwab. “Who wouldn’t want to room with their best friend?” asked Schwab. “We knew we would be with each other all the time and in each other’s dorms, so that’s another reason we figured why not just room together,” said Oliver. Seniors Rachel Lilly and Alexie McFarland also plan to room together; both will be freshmen at Ohio University in the fall. “A familiar face will be nice to have while I’m away from home,” McFarland said. “And we both like to sleep in the darkness,” A vital part to being roommates is the ability to get along. This, according to Rachel Lilly, will be no problem. “We like practically all the same things,” Lilly said. Both McFarland and Lilly plan to major in an environmental subject. “We also have two totally different circles of friends, and having her there will introduce me to tons of new, interesting people,” “Having a constant friend throughout this whole process has really been a major reason I’ve felt so comfortable and excited for the upcoming year,” McFarland said. Some students have had the opportunity to room with lifelong friends. “AJ and I have always been close,” Meikle said. “We started hanging out in elementary school,” AJ Peterson and Mitchell Meikle are to be roommates at Miami University in Oxford their freshman year. “We get along because we’re so different,” senior Meikle said. Peterson is currently planning to major in biochemistry and Meikle’s goal is to graduate Miami with a teaching degree in art. The decision to room together comes easy to these students. “Because we’re friends,” Peterson said. Students choose their classmates as future roommates for this fall. Dorm room cooking BY KYLEE MCFARLAND (‘18) Below are statements from a few students in college about what they enjoy cooking in their dorm rooms.

Claire Lamb A junior at Otterbein University “For breakfast I’ll usually have oatmeal and yogurt or a bagel with peanut butter. For lunch I eat a lot of different things LOL, but probably most often like a chicken sandwich with spinach and cheese. Maybe I’ll add an egg occasionally? Sometimes a smoothie. And for dinner if I don’t go somewhere else to eat, I’ll cook chicken and rice or pasta. With veggies and/or bread. Sometimes fajitas, quesadillas or burgers.”

Mikayla Morrison

Maggie McGonagle

A sophomore at the Ohio State University Newark Branch

A junior attending Ohio University

“I like to cook waffle pizzas and sometimes I use a rice cooker to make burrito bowls with different veggies and beans. I’ve made granola bars before with chocolate chips and dried fruits and it was really sticky, but actually really good.”

“I cook a lot of chicken and a lot of crock pot meals because they’re easy and don’t take long (especially the crock pot stuff because I can throw it in and leave it for the day). I also do a lot of things like waffle pizza and brownie or cake in a mug if I’m having sweet or savory cravings.”

Karson Mills “Her work focuses on femininity and showcase female figures.”

Noah King “In my final year of studio art at GHS, I have decided to focus on my acrylic painting skills.”

Tristan Mullins Melanie Merrick “I want my work to affect the world by showing others that your artist style is nothing to be ashamed of...”

“I mostly use pencil and charcoal, as it provides a fair amount of control and expression in my work.”

Best in Show Senior artists share some of their best work from the year. Kinsey Miller “My favorite media to work with is acrylic paint and watercolor.”

Mitchell Meikle “I love the fast-paced expression offered in a simple way.”

Leila Kousari-Rod

“My favorite thing about art is that there are no rules for how to do it.”

Abigail LaRussa “I want my visual art works to leave a positive impact on today’s society and to inspire a change.” 12 MAY 2018

Graham Squire “With the issue number in the corner and zealous ads for cheap plastic toys with magic (albeit exaggerated) powers plastered all over, I hoped to raise that same feeling of nostalgia and simultaneously create the illusion of having a full universe with tantalizing and fantastical stories waiting with just the turn of a page.”

Remembering movies and TV shows of our childhood BY RILEY VRADENBURG (‘18)

Hannah Montana

The Powerpuff Girls

High School Musical

Spy Kids

(2006-2011) - This TV series was a classic for many of us growing up for almost every girl and some guys.

(2006) - This movie gave everyone false pretenses about what high school is honestly like. I think we were all a little disappointed that real high school is a little different.

Lizzie Mcguire

(2001-2004) - Lizzie Mcguire was a funny and relatable perspective of every 13-yearold’s lifestyle that helped viewers to realize that life is not perfect.

Finding Nemo

(2003) - Finding Nemo is a classic childhood movie that could still be considered a classic in many households today.

The Suite Life of Zack and Cody

(2005-2008) - While watching this show, everyone fantasized about pulling off shenanigans in a hotel like the characters did.

Freaky Friday

(2003) - This movie made everyone wish that they could switch places with someone in your life to get a new crazy perspective of life.

Spongebob Squarepants

(1999-) - Spongebob Squarepants is still so relevant today because people make spongebob references almost every single day.

School of Rock

(2003) - This movie also gave every young person a false idea of what high school would be like. There is not actually a fun ex band member as a music teacher unfortunately. 24 MAY 2018

(1998-2005) - The Powerpuff Girls inspired many power seeking women of today.

(2001) - Spy Kids made everyone wish that they could have a secret alter ego or a family of spies. The adventures this family went on were envious.

Lazy Town

(2004-2008) - Everyone loved this Icelandic comedy because it was so strange but so entertaining at the same time.

Sky High

(2005) - After watching this movie endlessly, every kid wished for super powers or a school in the sky. Everyone just hoped they were not that one kid without a super power.

Kim Possible

(2002-2007) - This action filled TV show was very entertaining for everyone as a kid.

Madagascar

(2005) - This talking zoo made every child wish that animals or pets could talk. It would be so much fun to communicate with animals and your household pets.

Phineas and Ferb

(2007-2015) - These crazy kids related to all of us finding something to do in the summer in such a small town like Granville.

Ice Age

(2002) - Ice age is another movie about talking animals who existed far before we did. This is a fun perspective that is funny but also involves some learning about the past.

Drake and Josh

(2004-2007) - Drake and Josh made everyone wish they had a best friend brother to tackle life with, but not always a crazy sister like Megan to ruin most of their lives. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) - After being read this picture book endlessly as little kids, a movie creation of the story is so fun to relive. The fantasies of giant food went through every child and adults mind after seeing this movie.

The Fairly Odd Parents

(2001-) - This show has been playing basically since we were all born. It has been a staple TV series for little kids of all ages.

The Chronicles of Narnia

(2005) - This movie is yet another production that made kids wish that animals could communicate with humans. This fantasy combined with an alternate world was very popular among children and adults.

Good Luck Charlie

(2010-2014) - With the rise of YouTube and vlogging, Teddy was living the ultimate life vlogging for her little sister and documenting their family growing up together.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

(2005) - This movie puts to motion every kids fantasy. A group of children get to go to a candy factory to learn about all of the aspects and has many fun twists in between.

That’s So Raven

(2003-2007) - This fun family and friend group was enough to pull the audience in, but in combination with Raven’s talents of future vision reading is a fun additive that children enjoyed.
