GRANVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
CLASS OF COVID-19 May 2020 1
LETTER FROM THE EDITOR O n April 20, Governor Mike DeWine announced that all schools within Ohio would remain closed for the rest of the school year. Although next week marks the official end to the 20192020 school year, it feels as if school has been over for months already. The cancellation of spring sports, the musical and the spring concerts have left students feeling empty. The lack of closure is upsetting and there are still many uncertainties. Many students are left questioning when they will return to an in-person class setting and how this pandemic will affect their coming years. Especially devastated are this year’s graduating class of seniors, of which makes up eleven members of the BluePrints staff. The cancellation of senior Prom was an extreme disappointment to all, as it is a classic and iconic moment within both our high schools lives and teenage years as a whole. The cancellation of graduation, however, is most upsetting, as this class of seniors will not be able to truly experience one of the most important milestones within their lives. The culminating achievements are not able to be rightfully celebrated, leading to extreme frustration and disappointment. Even with all of the discontentment, the response from the Granville community has been overwhelmingly positive as they strive to support this year’s senior class. It is important to remember that we all must band together and make the best out of this terrible situation. Because we are not able to be in school, the staff has worked diligently together from home in order to put out our
(Photo by Emily Gold) annual senior edition for your enjoyment and memories. One bright spot over the last two months for the BluePrints staff was learning that we won the All Ohio award from the Ohio Scholastic Media Association. We were one of only two staffs in the state to garner this distinction, and it was a first for our school. The award was the result of the hard work and collaborative spirit that has distiguished our staff all year. We’d like to thank everyone that has supported us throughout this year-- students, staff, administration and community members-- as we could not have brought home our first All Ohio award without it. What a perfect way to celebrate our 10th anniversary!

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HELPED MAKE A BAD SITUATION BETTER STAFF EDITORIAL he coronavirus pandemic is causing mass hysteria across the world and is the cause of every major and minor cancellation, postponement or rescheduling. While it must not be forgotten that there are many people being severely affected by the virus, one group of people is going to be missing out on events that most of them have been looking forward to their entire lives. This group is none other than the graduating class of 2020. Due to our country’s lockdown of unprecedented scale, this year’s seniors are missing out on major events such as their Prom, their final sports seasons and even a graduation ceremony. These events are ones that many high school graduates look back on with fond memories, and we will, unfortunately, never be able to craft those memories. Even though COVID-19 struck the world in the latter half of the school year, allowing plenty of time for at least some memories fromour final year of high school to be made, students’ minds will no doubt be flooded with thoughts of the virus in the future. Instead of typical high school moments, such as the aforemen-
T
tioned Prom and graduation, we will only be able to recall Zoom classes, online assignments and a messed up sleep schedule. As you and your family spend the time thanking medical workers, wishing the best for small business owners and sending prayers to those directly affected by the coronavirus, just take a small moment to think of the class of 2020 and how the memories that most people see as common. The class of 2020 has not been completely forgotten about, however, for there have been several efforts taken by parents and GHS staff to attempt and compensate for the lack of a normal senior year. Examples of these efforts include the turning on of the stadium lights for 20 minutes on April 20, the dropping off of signs in the front yards of seniors, the “Adopt a Senior” program, as well as many other efforts both big and small. For this, all seniors send out a thank you to those that helped make it possible. Any idea of a normal senior year has come and gone for this year’s graduating class, but everything the community has done to try and replicate it has to be appreciated.

THINGS WE APPRECIATE ABOUT BEING AT HOME
M
any Americans find themselves isolated at home for unprecedented amounts of time, resulting in financial struggle, boredom and a loss of normalcy. However, GAVIN ROBINSON for people able to utilize it, the immense amounts of free time created by being forced to stay home can be funnelled into productive hobbies and habits. Finding a new hobby can help pass the time and develop skills and creativity. Without the strict schedule created by work or classes, many people also have found time to exercise, read through a book and discover new movies or music. Many hobbies can be done at home, with many great resources available on the internet to help newcomers. Gardening and cooking are two rewarding and practical skills that will last into the future. Learning a new instrument is entertaining and challenging, and there are plenty of videos available for many different instruments. Crafts such as knit-
ting, woodworking or programming can even be potentially used to make money. Developing creative skills like music, art or writing is also rewarding and helps relieve the boredom of staying home. The extra free time has also allowed many people to pursue exercise. While gyms are closed, outdoor activities like running and hiking are not limited. Less commuters and general traffic also make
“The rare free time provided to many through the quarantine should not be undervalued” it more appealing to ride bicycles. Exercise is an extremely productive way to both improve health and alleviate stress. Reading both fiction and nonfiction is another good way to pass time while engaging your brain. A good fiction story can make a few hours fly by while providing entertainment and fostering creativity. Nonfiction books are equally enjoyable through introducing new ideas and expanding your knowledge on any subject.
Books can provide a necessary sense of escape when the scenery around you becomes bland. Exploring new music and movies can also be beneficial for fighting boredom while introducing yourself to different ideas. Plenty of movies including classics, blockbusters and independent films can be browsed through services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and Disney+. Setting aside time to watch through a well-made movie is thought-provoking. Similarly, huge libraries of every genre of music are available through streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music and Google Music. Listening to different kinds of music can provide a variety through long periods of monotony. While it may be easy to burn through the hours with anxious thoughts, worrying and general negativity, there are many ways to make the most of your free time. Physical and creative outlets are extremely important to develop in order to maintain happiness through times of uncertainty. Therefore, the rare free time provided to many through the quarantine should not be undervalued.
WHAT WE WILL MOST APPRECIATE ONCE THE QUARANTINE IS OVER
W
ith the possibility of quarantine being lifted soon, here are 10 top things we’ll appreciate once it’s over. 1. Seeing friends A big part of quarantine for teenagers FAITH BLANKEMEYER and adults alike is not seeing your friends. After quarantine ends you will be able to hang out, eat food, and do other activities with those you haven’t seen since the beginning of isolation. 2. Eating out Eating out will be a huge part of leaving isolation. Having dinner with your family and friends will once again be a “norm.” With spring around the corner, nice meals outside are also an option. 3. Walking in town Walking in downtown Granville on a nice day is a great way to get outside, see people you know and enjoy the sur-
roundings. With restaurants and stores open again, the streets will be bustling with people. 4. Going to the mall Whether it’s Indian Mound Mall or Easton, going to shop and eat at one of these malls will be an option again. Not only is walking around these areas fun, but it also passes the time. 5. Concerts/ Sporting events After quarantine, concerts that were rescheduled will now be available once again. Whether you’re going to see your favorite artist or team, enjoying an event in a crowd will once again be possible. 6. Going back to work For most people this would sound like a bad thing, however, with the massive loss in jobs, most people will welcome going back to work with their coworkers. Restaurant workers and offices alike will be open once again. 7. Physical contact Whether it’s hugging a friend or shaking someone’s hand, physical contact will once again be allowed. The new norms
may be different but with those, you know this will be a possibility once more. 8. Traveling After quarantine is over spring break plans that were canceled and road trips can be replanned. Going out and exploring the world, even if it’s a national park, will be a luxury that can be enjoyed again. 9. Visiting family Visiting those who live far away, close, or in a nursing home will be possible again after the end of quarantine. 10. Haircut With barbershops and hair salons closed after the quarantine is over, it will finally be possible to receive a new fresh cut. After the quarantine is lifted I plan on going out to Cincinnati and enjoying the sights around that area with my family. We will be going to celebrate graduating high school.

here is no one and nothing that could replace the class of 2020’s senior year festivities, such as Prom and graduation, however, the Granville community has tried its best to help fill the void. While families continue to personally honor their seniors in any way that they see fit, there are also community-wide efforts to help seniors feel celebrated. One such effort is the “Adopt a Senior” program, where parents post a summary about their senior in a FaceBook group, titled “Adopt a Senior (Granville),” and someone in the community “adopts” them. STADIUM CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES DURING VIRUS BY Paige grunden (‘20)
O
ne thing that has not been stopped by the presence of COVID-19 is the stadium rebuild at the high school. The multi-million dollar project has been much anticipated by the community and the student athletes who will be using the new stadium. The school building has been closed to students for over a month now. During this period of online learning, construction workers have been continuing their work, and the stadium is still scheduled to be finished by August. Since construction has not been halted due to the virus, there have had to be new safety implementations issued in order to keep the workers healthy and safe. “Roberston Construction has taken precautions to protect their workers,” Athletic Director Josh DeVoll said. The new athletic complex will be named the Walter J. Hodges stadium, and is being paid for by both private and public funding. The old stadium was full of safety issues and areas that needed to be brought up to standard. The new stadium will address these issues and more.
Robertson Construction finished installing the home stands and press box on Mar. 30. Stadium construction has continued during the COVID-19 crisis. (GEVS photo via Facebook) According to GameOnGranville.com, the renovations will include “ADA-compliant bleachers with more seating space, new turf field that will accommodate all 16 field-based school teams, physical education classes, and GRD leagues, concession stand with updated electrical and additional storage and preparation space, on-site locker rooms that will provide shelter and eliminate the need for
athletes to cross parking lots, a resurfaced track that will improve safety and require less annual maintenance, and ADA-compliant restrooms.” Donations are still being collected at GameOnGranville.com. With so much uncertainty in the air around the 2020-2021 school year, the completion of this massive project will be something to look forward to.

FEATURES BY SARAH CARPENTER (20) s Blueprints reaches its ten-year anniversary, it is important to recognize some of the people who shaped the magazine into what it is today. Over the past ten years, the magazine has had nine editors-in-chief, each of whom has helped the journalism program within the school grow and flourish.
A
Alaina McPherson Greer (2011-2012) Alaina Greer served as editor-in-chief from 2011-12 and currently is a Business Analyst Supervisor in IT at Huntington Bank. Although she describes high school as a blur now, she attests to the fact that being editor-in-chief has helped her within her life. “I feel like it was my first real opportunity in a leadership role that has helped me throughout my career,” Greer said. Her experience with design because of the journalism program has also been of use to her during her current endeavours. “My experience helped me when designing pamphlets for a career development seminar that I had organized.”
YEARS OF GROWTH In honor of the 10th anniversary of BluePrints, our current editor-in-chief, Sarah Carpenter, contacted former editors, who shared their memories of working on the magazine and explained how the experience impacted their future careers.

Kyle Dawson (2012-2013) Kyle Dawson served as editor-in-chief of Blueprints for the 2012-2013 school year, and went on to become a journalism major at Kent State University with a concentration in broadcasting. She was able to anchor weekly newscasts for Kent’s student television show TV2. She then went on to become a weekday morning news anchor in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Although the news hours were brutal, Dawson said she was thrilled to have the opportunity to sit at the anchor desk right after college. “In news, it is something different every day, which can be exciting and exhausting,” she said. Although she loved being a news anchor, she ultimately felt she needed a change.

“Every now and then you get an upbeat, feel-good story. But the greater majority is filled with negativity and heartbreaking stories,” said Dawson. “After nearly two years in the industry I decided it was time for a change.” She has since started her own project called Handprynt, which launched in April 2020, has already fed 1,500 people in New York City, has funded a food initiative at UCLA Children’s Hospital and is currently running a COVID-19 relief campaign. “[Handprynt] is a company created to make the act of giving back simple and fun,” Dawson said. “We have partnered with a number of athletes, celebrities and influencers to rally behind projects and causes across the country in the hopes of leaving our mark on the world.” Throughout it all, Dawson believes that her experience as editor-in-chief has helped her throughout her life, and within everything she has done. “It gave me the confidence I needed to pursue a career in journalism, or any type of job that requires even a little interaction with people” said Dawson. “It advanced my ability to effectively communicate with my peers, faculty, close friends or total strangers.” Anna Minton (2015-2017) Anna Minton, unlike the past editors before her, served as editor-in-chief for both her junior and senior years. She was part of the program for three years total. During her two year tenure, Minton played a crucial role in the development of the journalism program, and describes it as one of her most significant accomplishments. “One thing that I was very proud to achieve while on staff was how much we were able to help BluePrints grow,” said Minton. “We had a pretty small staff, and by the time I was a senior, we were able to grow both our staff and readership dramatically.” Minton also helped with the develop-

ment of the website her first year on the staff. “I was on staff for three years, and I assisted Julia Lerner, the editor-in-chief at the time, with starting our website,” Minton said. Minton is currently a rising senior at Miami University and is a Writing Scholar majoring in both journalism and political science. She has numerous internship opportunities in both journalism and strategic communications. “I’ve worked in New York during the summer of 2018 at Havas Media as a media intern and was a broadcast reporter for WHIZ TV News in Zanesville in 2019,” Minton said. “I am also currently a media and communications intern for the Workforce Development Board of Central Ohio and have been with this organization since the summer of 2019.” Minton credits her role as editor with teaching her about leadership and organization, and gained useful knowledge for her everyday life. “I learned a lot during my two years in the position and was able to take a lot of information with me into my classes in college, as well as some of my internships,” said Minton. “It gave me both practical experience with Indesign and AP style editing and also taught me how to delegate, develop a schedule and business plan, and how to be a motivational leader.” Emma Naille 2017-2018 Emma Naille held the position of editor-in-chief during the 2017-18 school year and is currently a sophomore at Miami University majoring in English. As editor-in-chief, Naille won several awards for her writing, but credits her most significant accomplishment as working diligently with the rest of her staff. “I remember putting out an issue while Mrs. Tolbert was recovering from surgery,” Naille said. “It felt like a pretty big accomplishment to put the issue together without her being in class.”
2017-18 emma naille
Even as she progresses through college, her experience as editor has opened many doors for her both academically and socially. “My experience helped me gain a position as a blogger my freshman year for UP Magazine, Miami’s student-run publication,” Naille said. “I’ve loved being involved with UP and even got to serve on the director team as their Digital Media Strategist this year.” Overall, Naille’s involvement has proven useful in many of her endeavours. “[My involvement] also helped me gain confidence as a writer and made me believe that I am capable of pursuing a career in writing.” Josie DeCaro 2019-2019 Josie DeCaro served as editor-in-chief of Blueprints for the years 2018-2019, and led the staff to a second-place rating at the annual OSMA contest. DeCaro was the recipient of numerous OSMA awards, including one excellence and eight honorable mentions, but states her largest accomplishment was learning how to be a part of a team. “The [most significant accomplishment] would be how we worked together as a team,” DeCaro said. “During my period of being editor we all communicated really well and had a good bond with one another, which always makes it more fun and interesting.” DeCaro is currently attending Ohio State University at Newark, and will be transferring to the main campus in the spring as a communications major. “I am studying communications because it’s more of a wide range of things that I enjoy, such graphic design and public relations,” said DeCaro. DeCaro credits her role as editor-in-chief as helping her become a better leader. “[It] taught me how to communicate with others and accept new ideas and opinions that can better our work together,” DeCaro said.

SPORTS
OUR GREATEST SPORTS MOMENTS BY ANDY HOBEN (‘20)
For my last batch of Hobie’s Hot Takes, I reflect on the greatest sports memories for the Class of 2020.
HOBIE’S HOT TAKES
Football seniors wrote perfect ending to theIR story
Many members of the senior class are Blue Aces football lifers, growing up in this village and rarely missing a Friday night on the home grass. Others, including two of our All-State players Bo Buttermore and Joe Welsh, came on the scene later in the game. Some quit for a year or more and returned, a few joined the team for the very first time while in high school, and one even latched on mid-season (Hey, we needed a kicker). However we arrived in the 2020 football senior class, we can claim that we were able to be a part of the most accomplished team in the history of the school: 33 wins in a four-year span, an outright LCL title and the first two playoff
10 www.blueprintsonline.org
wins in school history. It is only fitting that we were to be the ones to send the home grass off with history - the first and final playoff win on the natural turf.
Girls’ soccer MAKE it TO to promised land
If there is any Granville team sport that could be considered in “dynasty” territory, it would be the girls’ soccer squad. The team has made an unprecedented five state semi-final appearances in the last seven years; however, the most recent trip in the 2019 season came after a two-year hiatus over the course of the middle two seasons of the class of 2020’s high school careers. In a similar vein to the football Aces, this group of girls soccer seniors may not have had the star-power of the grades surrounding it, but nonetheless were able to lead an injury-riddled and incredibly young team back to the final four. Four different members of the 2020 senior class will now go on to play Division III college soccer in the area, with Madelyn Vradenburg heading to Capital, Alex Sokolik going to Kenyon, Alyson Parks attending Wittenberg and Megan Mathers continuing to play at Otterbein.
Spring ATHLETEs CAN STILL be proud of despite cancellation
A returning district champion baseball team, a girls’ lacrosse team looking to take the next step, every decorated track and field athlete, and all other Granville spring sports seniors saw their careers cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic. While this fact is disappointing, it only adds to the legacy of these athletes. They may never know exactly how far they would have made it in their final tournament, or have the senior night that they always had dreamed about, but maybe in a way being forced to say goodbye to the games they love will make everyone involved appreciate it even more. Not to say that the games and seasons lost do not matter, but now that the spring athletes have had to live this harsh reality, it must show those fortunate enough to have another year with their teammates to play every game as if it truly is their last. You never know when that time will come; for spring athletes in the class of 2020, it came far too soon.
STAR SPOTLIGHT
PANDEMIC DOES NOT SIDELINE JOHNSTON C BY MOLLY WILSON (‘20)
OVID-19 has stripped senior spring athletes of their final chance to play in a BlueAce uniform, however, for athletes such as Tyler Johnston, athletics will continue beyond high school. Johnston has been playing baseball for nine years, starting in little league when he was only 9 years-old. Since then he has made waves in the Granville baseball community as a pitcher, lettering 3 years thus far. Johnston earned the All-League pitcher title and was a Top 5 Strikeout leader in both his sophomore and junior seasons. Despite these personal accomplishments, Johnston says he is especially proud to have won the District Championship 2019 season. Johnston is an all-around athlete, lettering once in both soccer and football. Johnston found a home at Marietta College as he has accepted an offer to play baseball with their program.
Tyler Johnston delivers the pitch during his junior season. (Photo courtesy of David Weidig).
“[Marietta] was the best fit and somewhere where I could contribute early in my career,” said Johnston. Johnston plans to pursue a degree in Communications once at Marietta and feels this degree will reflect his strengths. “One of my strengths is public speaking and I plan on being a representative for a sports-related company,” said Johnston. The effects of COVID-19 and quarantine have forced Johnston to adapt to an at-home workout regimen includin a six-day a week workout routine and a throwing routine taking place every other day of the week, according to Johnston. “Never in a million years would I have thought that you wouldn’t be able to play the game that you love your senior year,” said Johnston’s father Wes Johnston in a Twitter post. Still, Johnston stays enthused about the new level of competition he will experience with the Marietta baseball program.

ue to the coronavirus quarantine, spring sport athletes have been forced to adjust to practicing at home and embrace the fact that their seasons will definitely be cut short, if not cancelled. Although all sports are different, it appears that many of the high school’s spring athletes and their coaches have had to find alternative ways to practice. “The coaches are giving us weekly workout challenges as well so that we can stay in shape when we hopefully return to play,” junior lacrosse player Hannah Rockwell said. The athletes are still working hard to improve due to the help from their coaches, but have also had to take some matters into their own hands. “My coach sends out workouts every week, and he has been great about communicating the importance of staying positive and resilient,” senior cross country runner Tori Bergstrom said. “I go on runs every day before I start homework and sometimes do body weight workouts to keep up my fitness and to clear my mind.” In addition to their coaches and own self-motivation, many athletes have

FIRST PERSON: An Athlete’s perspective BY SOPHIE SHAW (‘20)
A
t first, I was excited about school closing for a while. A three-week spring break sounded great. I planned to sleep in and enjoy the time off. However, after about a week of listening to a lot of news on the coronavirus quarantine, it finally hit me that we might not return for the remainder of the year. The disappointment came when I realized that we would miss out on so much-- spring sports, Prom, and maybe even graduation. Having my senior lacrosse season taken away from me has been heart-wrenching. I never imagined that the last time I would wear my Granville uniform would be as a junior a year ago. I’ve been a part of Granville lacrosse since I was in 4th grade and I’ve watched it grow from a club sport into a highly competitive varsity program. Last year, our team emerged as a powerhouse with a 17-3 record and ranked 4th in state. It’s been really disappointing not to be able to play my senior season, especially after all the work I’ve put into the off-season in preparation for this spring. The fact that I can’t leave on my own terms hurts. My heart also aches for my teammates, coaches, and all the parents who have supported us over the years. My parents have been involved and have watched me develop as a player since the beginning, and now they won’t have the opportunity to enjoy my final high school season with me. It’s an unfortunate situation for all our senior athletes and their families who won’t be able to experience their last season of spring sports. While this has been a really tough time, I’m trying to stay positive by focusing on the future. It really helps to know that my lacrosse days aren’t over. I’ll be playing in college next year, so I’m focused on preparing for that and working to stay in shape. Going on runs, lifting, wall ball, and shooting are all part of my daily routine. These work-outs keep me focused on the future and motivated to take on new challenges. Similarly, I urge all seniors to look forward. Your future has

These times are difficult for us all, but focusing on what our future holds will help ease a lot of the disappointment and sadness we are feeling over our current situation. Missing out on all the final moments of high school is devastating. Instead of celebrating our last days at GHS, it feels as if our senior year has just fizzled out. However, I believe that we will come out of this experience for the better. We’ll no longer take things for granted, but will appreciate all the little, routine things in life. For us athletes, not being able to play our senior season brings a whole new appreciation for all the practices, games, and bus rides we once took for granted. I’ll never forget the memories I’ve made with my teammates and the history we made on the field. I’ll continue to look forward to the future and am excited to see what’s in store for the Class of 2020.

Major
DECISIONS Choosing a major is a big decision for students. They must consider their interests as well as future employment rates. While many college freshman start college without declaring a major, others are ready to declare their majors. The following is a list of the 10 most popular majors for Granville graduates.
BY MOLLY WILSON (‘20)
A
s senior year comes to an end many students are beginning to declare where they are going to school and what they are majoring in. As more being to declare their major trends being to show. Below are the top ten most popular majors for students to go into this year.
ENGINEERING
Engineering is an umbrella major that houses many specific areas of study. Many chose the Civil Engineering route, while others go Electrical or Chemical. The diversity within the major attracts many and allows for students to come out of college with a job, according to a future engineering major Derick Bellafato. This major requires a student who is both mathematically and scientifically savvy. Engineering lends itself to a decently sized workload and typically requires students to put in about 19 hours

of work each week, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement “Engineering allows students to understand the inner workings of the world,” to future engineering major Trevor Crumley said.
BUSINESS
Business is another major that diverges into many specific areas of study. Business majors typically can go in many different directions with a career choice. Some may go into marketing while others choose to pursue finance. The range and basic foundation within the major are attractive, according to future Ohio University Business major Sam Klaus. Many students also go into the business college with specific mindsets in a career. Ben Penn is planning to attend Miami University this fall and study business. He wants to “work up the corporate ladder” within a fashion brand such as Hollister or Abercrombie, according
to Penn.
EDUCATION
Education is the foundation of life as we know it. The ability to educate is one that many feel passionate about and thus turn it into a career. An Education major is another very broad major as students can specialize in a particular level of education. Abby Johnson is a future Early Childhood Education major and says this level is particularly important due to the teacher’s ability to “have an impact on the future generation and impact lives.” Many education majors do not know exactly what level of education they want to teach, but simply want to make an impact on children’s lives. “All levels are equally important,” future Ohio University education major Hannah Cox said. “Teachers help shape kids into who they are and make them excited for their own futures.”
NURSING
Nursing is a practical and popular degree that many students pursue in their first four years at university. The students who pursue this degree most likely want to impact the lives of others in a positive way, helping them through the hardest moments in their lives. Alyssa Zeno plans to attend The Ohio State University and pursue a degree in nursing, with hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner after college. “[Nursing] takes commitment and dedication to the medical field,” said Zeno. Currently, there is an increasing need for nurses in hospitals, especially with the pandemic on the rise, according to Zeno. “I’m excited to pursue becoming a nurse practitioner because it means I am a part of an innovative and constantly developing career that can change the lives of others,” said Zeno.
COMMUNICATIONS
Communications focus on effective communication methods in many aspects of life. Communications majors typically have a specific focus in media, business, journalism or politics. Many communications majors go onto have a career in public relations, human resources or as a social media manager for different companies. “Companies need a well-spoken person that is able to represent the company with passion and dignity,” future communications major Tyler Johnston said.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
Many students feel passionate about the environmental issues that plague the world. Environmental sciences majors are perfect for these students who want to impact the current environmental situation. An Environmental Sciences degree gives students the ability to focus on the environment in the capacity they choose. Elizabeth Austing plans to attend The Ohio State University and pursue a degree in Environmental Sciences with a focus on sustainability and business implementation. “There’s a way for every business to implement some form of sustainability. If every business makes little changes then it’ll have a huge positive impact on the planet,” Austing said. Austing specifically has goals of impacting the sustainability of the Fashion industry and its effects on the planet. She plans to minor in Fashion Merchandising to give her the tools to work in this
specific field.
HEALTH SCIENCES
Health sciences is a broad major that teaches students how to apply science to human health. “Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and being in tune with your body is an important part of living a happy, fulfilling life,” future health science major Lilly Stewart said. Those who graduate with a bachelor’s in health sciences typically go into higher levels of education to pursue their educational goals. Health sciences is a gateway degree that allows students to learn how to help others understand how to exercise, fuel, and nourish their bodies to their fullest potential, according to Stewart.
SPORTS INDUSTRY
Many go into college with hopes of graduating with a degree that allows them to work in a sports-related field. Many students this year are going the sports major route. Some are unsure about their specific area of study within the industry while others plan to pursue a career in sports management and administration. Brody Bitters is attending Butler University in the fall and plans to go into the sports media field. Inspired by ESPN and talk shows like First Take, Bitters is interested in conversing and debating about current sports topics with other students,
according to Bitters. This is just one of many sports-related careers that students have opportunities to pursue at their respected universities.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
Political science, considered a social science, requires students to learn about the government in practice and in theory, according to U.S. News. Denison University student Frances Goodwin feels that learning about political science will allow her to understand past governmental trends and possibly avoid these trends in the future, according to Goodwin. While every major is applicable to real-world situations, political science is an extremely practical degree as every aspect of American life connects back to politics. A political science degree allows students to go into numerous careers and many even further their education with law school.
FASHION
Many students this year are going into fashion-related fields. Some plan to pursue fashion merchandising while others are going the fashion design route. There is one thing every fashion major has in common, an eye for trends. According to KSU fashion merch major Morgan Roof, fashion related majors must research and predict what will be in style and when.

most well received by the underclassmen, for the seniors have already gone through what our protagonist is experiencing.
“High School Musical 3” (2008)
The series, while iconic and memorable, is, let’s be honest, extremely cheesy. The writing, direction, musical numbers and everything in between only adds to the film’s somewhat trashy nature. Whether or not you agree with this claim, some things about this movie are undeniable, such as the fun and light-hearted nature associated with the plot and more specifically the musical numbers sprinkled throughout; the latter are the clear highlights of the film. This film can also double as a bright depiction of graduation, something to take the seniors’ minds off how unfortunate their current situation is. It’s not groundbreaking or surprising but this is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, for this film is simply supposed to be a fun conclusion to a series that so many of our peers have fond memories of.
“Superbad” (2007)
Arguably the greatest teen movie of all time, this raunchy film is the result of some of the best minds from the world of comedy coming together. With talents such as Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Bill Hader and Seth Rogen working at what some would consider their peak, there is never a dull moment through (Photo by Emily Gold) the nearly two hour runtime. Every scene is hilarious, and usually inappropriate, a culmination that will make you either laugh, cringe, or both. This is not to say that the film is all surface level with no real content, for in the end this is a touching story about the separation of two best friends as they go to college without each other. If the rest of the movie makes you laugh and cringe, the end will almost definitely make you cry. While not for everyone, “Superbad” is a bona fide classic of the 21st century and will go down in history as a legendary comedy.
HEY LOOK MA, I MADE IT! nothing can replace a TRADITIONAL graduation, but these feel-good GRADUATION MOVIES will help BY NICHOLAS WILLIAMS (‘20)

or the first time in decades, our high school seniors will not get the chance to perform the iconic walk across the stage and thus receive their diploma, at least in person that is. While all major events are being cancelled during the coronavirus quarantine, this one hurts a little more due to how much this event has been built up over the years to be the official transition from student to adult. There are many campaigns from students across the country saying that we are “owed a graduation,” but there is another option: just watch some movies! While you are bored during quarantine, BluePrints suggests you watch these five movies to try and fill the void of not having a graduation.
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (2012)
A hidden gem, some people will see this as an extremely cheesy movie while others may tend to view it as a very emotional film with the potential to bring them to tears. There are pieces of the movie that can support either viewpoint, for some lines seem forced while others are heartfelt. Parts of this film are exciting but the majority of this film opts to take its time with a pace that should not be considered slow but rather patient. The director, Steve Chbosky, who also wrote the book that the film is based on, is relatively inexperienced in the film industry for he had only worked on a couple films before directing his second feature film. Due to his novice status in the industry, “Perks of Being a Wallflower” can definitely be considered a success. This is a film about graduation that may resonate with those who are not graduating this year. The finding of one’s self and loss of best friends due to college is a prominent theme felt through the film, a message that will most likely be

“Can’t Hardly Wait” (1998)
This film can only be described as the most stereotypical “90s high school party movie” to ever come out of Hollywood, for it checks off every single box needed to be considered as such. There are jocks bullying nerds, nerds acting out of character, the loser getting the popular girl, unlikely couples hooking up, graduation and that feeling from the main character that “this is the night.” Despite the film’s almost comical stereotypical nature, the movie is tons of fun, legitimately touching at parts, and an overall blast. However, it is worth mentioning that the ending may feel underwhelming, even though it does tie up loose ends, it does so in a way that may leave viewers dissatisfied. If you are extremely bored, which we are all, and have watched everything else that Netflix has to offer, “Can’t Hardly Wait” may suffice in providing entertainment for 101 minutes.
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986)
Switching from recent graduation movies to a classic of last century, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” has stood the test of time and continues to impact our society to this day, nearly 35 years later. A pop culture icon, Ferris embodies something that all high schoolers wish they had: the confidence to live in the moment and not worry about the future. The idea of a bunch of Ferrises running around may seem like chaos to most adults, it is almost inevitable for a teenager to not admire the risk-taking and adventurous Ferris. There is a little bit of the character in every teenager and the film simply screams for it to come out. Aside from the extremely fun protagonist, the rest of the movie is caked in iconography. As are many films by John Hughes, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” never slows down, pumping out memorable line after memorable line, usually followed by an unforgettable moment, resulting in a piece that will continue to inspire high schoolers for generations to come.

OUR TEN BEST MEMORIES BY EMILY GOLD‘20)
F
or the class of 2020, twelve years has been a long time to collect memories. From class field trips, to holiday parties and finally graduation, many members of the Class of 2020 have memories from these unforgettable events.
1. First day of school
4
For many, the first day of school is an exciting new experience for everyone. Students wake up early and make sure to look their best to start the new school year. “I always looked forward to the first day of school over the summer because I always loved school when I was younger,” said senior Tara Martos. 2. Valentine’s Day parties Valentine’s Day party is a personal favorite amongst elementary school children because of all the candy and trading cards with classmates. “The Valentine’s Day parties were the most fun because I got to give personalized cards to all my friends,” said senior Abby Mortellaro.
3. Halloween parties
Halloween was a blast since everyone got to wear their costumes all day long. “It was such a big thing to have the best costume,” said senior Marcus Mills. “I remember we did Halloween-themed games and ate so much candy.”

9. Junior Prom
5. Fourth grade camp
10. Getting Senior Signs from teachers
6. Kings Island Trip in Sixth Grade
As the Class of 2020 moves into this unpredictable part of their lives, may the people that made this class amazing never lose hope or curiosity. The best memories are yet to come.
The picnic to Wildwoods was the fifth-grade day trip where the entire day was spent on the playground or hanging out with friends. “It was a great time, I had fun climbing on trees and going down the solid metal sides!” senior Tyler Johnston said. During the fourth grade camp, the class was split into groups of 15 and went through exercises for team bonding. “It was one of my favorite field trips we went on because we ate a lot of worms and sang weird camp songs, ” senior Connor Smith said. Kings Island was a great field trip because it was the first glance of freedom the class experience to go around the park by themselves. “It was really fun because it was our first field trip that was purely amusement, and was my first time going to an amusement park,” senior Sophie Shaw said.
Prom is a rite of passage for high school, and one of the last time the class will be together. “Prom last year was so fun and I am so excited for this year since it will be our last school dance ever,” said senior Abigail Burkholder. Since many senior activities were canceled for the class of 2020 due to COVID-19, the school bought Granville Senior signs for all of the graduating class. “It was a really nice surprise to see all some of the teachers,” senior Savannah Lescas said.
7. Sixth Grade Graduation
Getting in preparation for senior graduation, the sixth grade celebration congratulated the class for moving on into middle school. “I remember that the sixth grade graduation was something that every intermediate schooler looked forward to. It was a huge celebration as we went off to middle school, so it was a very exciting day and there were lots of fun memories made,” senior Morgan Roof said.
8. Eighth grade Washington D.C. trip
For many students, Washington D.C was the memory enjoyed the most since there was so much anticipation leading up to it. “It was fun to be in a different place with a group of close friends,” senior Ainsley Chanda said.
