I

t’s graduation season-- the time that seniors look forward to most.

They are counting down the days and marking their calendars with every grad party that they will attend.

Family members are traveling to come watch their loved ones graduate. Parties and celebrations are planned. Many people are scrambling for the last minute details to be perfect. This is such an important season for all the students graduating and their families which is why we wanted to dedicate this issue to our seniors.

Each senior deserves to be acknowledged for their hard work and achievements in high school. Ella Kunar and Lydia Priano were able to contact every senior and compiled information on what each person plans to do after high school. Many standout athletes have decided to play their sport at the next level, which is a great accomplishment and proves that their hard work is paying off. Caden McDermott put together a list of the athletes playing at the next level and where they will be attending school. Out of the many students playing at the next level, Christian Hilton will be playing Division 1 football for Citadel and we thought that since not many students are able to make it to Division 1, we should highlight that feat. There is a huge variety in places where seniors decided to go to college. With that, there were also quite a few trends. Ella Mork highlighted the trends within our seniors’ decisions on where they are going.

ALYSHA WALLACE have talked a lot about the memories that they have made throughout their years at Granville. Several students look back to their elementary, intermediate, and middle school days and have some of the best memories.

Danielle Varrasso and Ella Mork came together and decided on their 10 favorite moments throughout their time at Granville while Kaison Durham made a playlist with all the best songs from his childhood. While there are a lot of memories from our childhoods, there are amazing things to take away from your high school experience also. Bella Cox recounts her favorite moments from each year of high school.

Altogether, we hope this issue highlights each senior and shows you how much the hard work in high school pays off. Our seniors are in the homestretch and we can’t wait to see what they do outside of high school.

A: The moments leading up to the graduation ceremony is the most fun/exciting time to be a high school principal. The anticipation of everyone involved to celebrate a special accomplishment is one that cannot be matched.

Q: HOW MANY KIDS DO YOU HAVE? A: I have three daughters.

They will be entering grades 6, 4 and Kindergarten next year.

Q: FAVORITE MUSIC GENRE? A: Depends on my mood but with 3 daughters I rarely get to control the radio :) Q: BUCKET LIST? A: Vacation to Africa and Hawaii, and to earn a doctorate degree.

LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY

Star Quarterback Carsyn Crouch shares about his battle with his ACL tear and surgery, not letting this stop him from playing at the next level.

BY COLDEN KADLIC lready going 10-0 in the regular season, the Granville Blue Aces Football team was set to take on Bishop Watterson in the first round of the playoffs, a team they had already beaten once 32-10. The Aces were dominating Bishop Watterson with a score of 28-7 just before the half and still had a 2 point conversion to try. The play call came in and it was determined that star quarterback Carsyn Crouch would run the ball and try to get the two points.

Crouch snapped the ball and immediately took off to his left, something he had done hundreds of times; however, this time something felt different for Crouch. Running to his left, he was met by an opposing player almost instantly. Aiming to spin off as he would any other time, he was again hit by another player.

This spin move had again been practiced hundreds of times, but this time Crouch felt different.

While spinning, the opposing player grabbed Crouch’s ankle and Crouch “felt a pop” which was soon followed by sharp pain in his right leg, forcing him to the ground.

He was unable to walk soon after this incident and was helped off the field by teammates and did not return to play. Crouch later found out in the following week that he had torn his ACL and would likely be out for the season.

He did not want to end his senior season like this, however, and decided to play an additional three games with a torn ACL and multiple other ligament sprains. Soon after the historic season, Crouch traveled to Florida to have his surgery performed by one of the nation’s best.

“It was a hard decision to make, but I wanted to end the season on the field with my brothers, regardless of my knee,” Crouch said.

After the season, Crouch's parents decided to travel to Florida for his surgery. "I was okay with it because Dr. Anderson does surgeries for professional athletes all the time," he said. In Florida, Crouch was able to meet many NFL stars including Buccaneers star wide receiver Chris Godwin who was also there for an ACL repair surgery.

“Recovery has not been easy. For almost one week after the surgery I was stuck in bed and unable to walk,” Crouch said. Compared to the typical ACL reconstruction surgery, Crouch had the completely invasive version, which is a lot harder on the body. Following that week, Crouch has been on a rigorous physical therapy session to ensure that his knee is ready to play at the next level. On top of this, he has been working out every day with fitness enthusiast and entrepreneur Cory Gregory.

For Crouch, the most vital part of his recovery has been being able to see his friends because “they have helped the most.” His friends have provided a way to take his mind off his knee and his recovery.

The hardest part for Crouch was the fact that his senior basketball season was taken away from him. This

“It has always been my dream to play at the next level.” is arguably his best sport. “It was hard realizing that I was done playing basketball forever, but I’m excited to play football at the next level,” Crouch said.

Crouch is planning to attend Lindsey Wilson College, an NAIA school that went 12-0 last year. “I loved the campus and the environment, and obviously I want to play for a great team,” Crouch said.

“I’m working as hard as I can to get back to 100%, but I see it taking around another 3 months,” Crouch said. “Every day I just stay positive and keep grinding.”

MORE THAN PHYSICAL Psychological response to sports injuries can trigger or unmask serious mental health issues

BY ALYSHA WALLACE t’s the second half in a huge rivalry game against Watkins Memorial High School. Junior Kira Fuller goes to take a step and finds her foot in a ditch. All of her momentum goes onto her leg and she twists and falls.

POP! Right away, she knows what she did. Fuller has just torn her ACL and is meeting the end of her junior soccer season. With a long recovery process ahead, she won’t be able to take the field for the next year, if not longer.

For some student-athletes, the psychological response to injury can trigger or unmask serious mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, disordered eating and substance use or abuse.

“Each student can act differently following injury,” athletic trainer Steve Rose said.

I

When a student-athlete is injured, there is a normal emotional reaction that includes processing the medical information about the injury provided by the medical team, as well as coping emotionally with the injury.

“Frustration, disappointment, anger, self-pity are some symptoms seen in the training room,” said Rose.

According to NCAA Advocate Margot Putukian, other emotional responses include sadness, isolation, irritation, lack of motivation, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances and disengagement.

Many student athletes experience some form of an emotional response to their injury, which was a concern for Fuller.

“I started to feel very disconnected from everything. Not just being active but friends and school, too,” Fuller said.

Another problematic response to injury is depression, which magnifies other responses and can also impact recovery.

“You hate to see motivation drop after an injury, but it is also understandable,” strength and conditioning coach Dylan Leffingwell said. “Sitting out and watching games is not enjoyable. Unless you come with the right attitude. Ask 'what can I do?' instead of just focusing on all the things you can’t do.”

When student-athletes sustain significant injuries, such as knee injuries associated with time loss from sport, they can suffer both physically as well as emotionally with a decrease in their quality of life.

“Following recovery it won’t all come back right off the bat but, be as ready as possible physically and mentally when you do,” Leffingwell said.

It’s also important for coaches, athletic trainers and team physicians to support injured student-athletes and do what they can to keep athletes involved and part of the team. “Watch film, meet with coaches about the next opponent, learn your craft even more than you thought beforehand,” Leffingwell said.

With the deaths of several student athletes this past year, the NCAA is under pressure to fix the issue. Katie Meyer, Stanford women’s soccer goalkeeper, passed away on Mar. 1.

Sarah Shulze, University of Wisconsin track and field star, passed away 13 Apr. 13. Lauren Bernett, James Madison University softball player, passed away on Apr. 25. Along with many other student athlete deaths, these were all ruled deaths by suicide.

There are many other ways to seek treatment. Find the people that you trust and reach out to them.

According to physical therapist Kristin Beigel, if a student athlete is feeling the effects of their injury, they should “talk. Reach out. To friends, family, coaches, your physical therapist, or a professional. Athletes are surrounded by more people than most and should never be afraid to reach out to a friend for a little reassurance to get their mind set back to achieving their goals.”

THANK YOU, GRANVILLE STAFF EDITORIAL hroughout the years, Granville has taught us many valuable lessons and provided us with lifelong memories. Although school work can be tough sometimes and we may not feel like getting out of bed in the morning everyday, the memories and friendships we've made make it all worth it in the end.

We am very thankful that we grew up in the small town of Granville and found friends that will last a lifetime.

Being in the same classes as our friends has made school a lot more enjoyable. Being able to always have a partner when the teacher says so, or just being able to laugh through the work we were given has been a big contributor to our enjoyment of our time at Granville. We were also able to go out of our comfort zone and find new friends because of the different classes and group assignments we did.

We are also thankful for the opportunities given to us through the sports programs. Granville sports has also been a very big contributor to many of our lives as it brings different grades together to form strong friendships and also teaches very

valuable lessons. According to senior staff member Ella Mork, at the start of her freshman year, being involved in soccer really made high school more enjoyable for her because she was able to become friends with students in different grades, and it made her very comfortable at school.

The student section at football games also really brought the seniors together and it was so fun to be able to cheer on the remarkable season every week.

We are also thankful for the strong academic program at GHS. Even though in the moment we dwell on the essays we have to write and the hours we spend preparing for tests, we believe that it has prepared us enormously for college. We will have skills that other students at our university might not have, and we will be successful.

Things such as dances, Friday night football games, pep rallies, field trips and other activities are memories we will cherish forever. We are so thankful Granville gave us our best friends, great relationships with teachers, important life lessons and a very memorable twelve years. Thank you, Granville!

COLLEGES NEED TO LOWER TUITION TO GIVE STUDENTS A CHANCE

A

s the 20212022 school year comes to a close, many seniors are choosing where they will further their education or have already committed. Because of inflation and MADELINE different economic BARKER difficulties like the crash of the 2008 market, colleges and universities have raised their prices exponentially, excluding prospective students on the way.

Recently, many news outlets have been reporting on the loans that college students have to take out in order to earn a degree. Unfortunately, students often have to take out loans that range from $27,000 to as high as $300,000, with interest.

Many of these students worked extra hard in high school in order to secure acceptance into these pres-

tigious universities, whether it be by taking advanced, honors or AP classes; participating in several extracurriculars at a time; completing up to hundreds of hours of community service or having leadership roles within their schools. In many cases, these high performing students have had to sacrifice things like spending quality time with friends and family, but when it comes time to commit to a school all of this extra work goes to waste because they have to weigh their financial options.

Option 1 is to take out an unsettling amount of student loans, with rates ranging from 1.04%-11.99%.

The second option is to give up on their dreams and choose the cheapest possible option, which may result in apathy regarding grades/classes/ programs and less possible networking opportunities in the desired field, etc. Many students are not thinking about the financial aspect of college, but rather meeting the criteria to

be admitted. No kid from age 14-18 knows the extent to which high college costs will affect their lives.

Many Democratic politicians, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, have argued for free education from public schools.

Many Republican states, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Indiana and Iowa, currently have programs that make public education cheaper for students from their states through various methods like tuition freeze, accepting mostly in-state students, and offering special grants for instate residents. On both sides, politicians have argued that it is unethical to take advantage of students, many of which are minors.

If this is such a bipartisan issue, why has nothing been done to remedy the issue through legislation to lower the price of college and reform the federal and private financial aid system?

DURST LEAVES A LEGACY THAT ALL STUDENTS WILL MISS

A

fter working at the high school for 17 years, Principal Matt Durst made the decision this year to resign as principal and pursue a career in the business field.

DANIELLE In this career path, VARRASSO he will be joining a family business and will get to work alongside his brothers and dad.

From my freshman year through my senior year, Durst has led the school with respect for all the teachers and students, which is very appreciated though we may not show it. When his resignation was announced, students were upset about the news and sad to see someone who has brought a very positive aspect leave the school.

A significant part of Durst’s time at Granville involved the impact of Covid-19 in 2020, which affected the entire school and created many obstacles. This is a situation in which

no one truly knows the right answer, and it is hard to make everyone happy. It was a really hard time as students were lost and did not get the fun privileges they were looking forward to. Durst understood this and kept a positive attitude, even through the hardest challenges. He spent a lot of time trying to find the best way to give the kids a graduation, though it was not ideal he did everything.

After two Covid years, our senior year was up in the air and we wondered if we would be getting a more normal school year. Durst has done everything he can to make sure that we are given all the normal perks of high school. He encouraged student sections, worked hard to allow us to have a Homecoming through restrictions and helped end the school year with a big Prom and graduation.

I specifically remember this year when Durst called me in to discuss matters of the student section after the first game of the season. He began speaking with the utmost excitement and joy about the turnout of the student section at the first game.

It was so nice to see that he was just as excited as the kids that we were to be able to all come together and show school spirit like we used to. He made sure to explain just how thankful he was that the students were having fun.

We will most miss his willingness to listen to students, get their feedback and ultimately make solutions.

When students came to him with questions concerning senior privileges, Ace Day, school dances, etc., Durst listened and responded. He directly spoke with a lot of seniors about changes and rules. He was continuously meeting with our class president George Turner and student body president Julian Rodgers as they tried to give us the best senior year.

Granville was lucky to have a principal who cared for the happiness of all the students and was able to make us feel like our opinions mattered.

His positive attitude, excitement towards education and his commitment to student happiness will surely be missed.

STUDENT START UPS

When student entrepreneurs start their brand, they have to overcome many challenges.

BY CADEN MCDERMOTT hen junior Dylan Neidermeyer started his small shoe resale business, it failed. Dylan began Sneaker Street a few years ago, he was passionate about shoes and was inspired to start the business after seeing others succeed in reselling. His love for shoes came from his big brother, Tyler. This first failure was an important lesson for Neidermeyer and it taught him about the hardships he would face as a student entrepreneur.

“Sometimes you are going to take some L’s in whatever your business is, but it’s a learning opportunity that you can apply to your future,” Neideremyer said. “Some of the challenges are how much work it could be finding, selling, cleaning and shipping shoes could be.”

Taking the path to be a student entrepreneur is not common. A majority of high school students will find jobs in restaurants or large name brand stores. This path may appear to be too much to take on, between school and extracurriculars, but in reality it allows for much more flexibility.

“There is a lot of work that is put into it and that can be challenging, which is why some people shy away from it,” Neidermeyer said. “I am my own boss though.”

shared the same sentiment on the value of starting your own business.

“I realized that working for myself gives me a higher ceiling in terms of profits and expansion,” Miller said. “Understanding the logistics of getting a small business off of the ground could help me launch a bigger operation in the future.”

By building their own businesses, these students are taking on a tremendous amount of responsibility and risk. There is also no clear outline for them to start; they simply just have to get out there and try.

“I was definitely nervous when I started, but I wanted to learn to build a successful business on a smaller scale,” Miller said.

For entrepreneurs, one of the most important things to do is to advertise and get their brand name out there.

In this day and age, it is critical to do this through social media.

“I have posted on all the social media platforms I have about it and the best way to try to grow the brand is from people just talking to each other and spreading the word,” Neidermeyer said.

It is also imperative to understand who their audience is. For Neidermeyer, his target audience is his fellow students; therefore, he makes posts and stories on Snapchat and Instagram. Miller, on the other hand, is focused more on adults, which is why

he uses Facebook for his marketing.

“I constantly contact potential clients via social media to gain respect and I also found that business cards and invoices can establish professionalism,” Miller said. “In a small community, it is important to leave a lasting impression on each client as word-of-mouth plays a big role in finding new clients.”

Owning their own businesses does mean they take on all the risk, and there will always be ups and downs.

“Yes, some scams have happened and I have had to deal with fake shoes,” Neidermeyer said. “Honestly the best way to deal with it is to have connections that can have your back and make sure your payment method is safe and you are able to get your money back if you get scammed or fake shoes.”

Being a student entrepreneur is a challenge; they have to deal with balancing school, extracurriculars, and work, however, building up a business that they are truly passionate about can be both financially and emotionally rewarding.

“I would say just constantly keep going even if you hit a slow point and just keep grinding if you are super passionate about it, and trust that when you really put time and effort into your brand, it pays off in the end,” Neidermeyer said.

ANOTHER WINNING SPORTS SEASON

BY MADELINE BARKER s the school year comes to an end, so does the spring sports season. Here are the latest updates at press time.

A

Girls Lacrosse Starting off their season on March 22 against Delaware Hayes, the girls lacrosse team played a magnificent game in very cold and windy weather, and still managed to win with a final score of 17-9. They went on to win against Olentangy Orange, Bexley, New Albany, Westerville Central, Bishop Hartley, Pickerington North, Big Walnut and will be playing Hilliard Darby on May 11, which is their last game before competing in the LCL tournament. Recently, they played Pickerington North and won with a final score of 14-7 so are going into their last game with high expectations. The girls are excited for the LCL tournament and are confident in their skills and the team leadership, especially in the senior players Clare Hotchkiss, Halle Brooks, Lia Coplin and Mallory Lindsay.

Their season record of 11-7 has a lot to do with the large concentration of experienced players including Alex Williams, Ben Lonzo, Davidson Jump, Devon Haley, Durham Kaison, Ethan Flora, Michael Sarap and Raymond Candle. On May 10, they won in overtime against Pickerington North with a final score of 12-11.

The team is excited for the LCL tournament.

Softball While the softball team does not have any senior players, they still have excellent leadership in the form of juniors. The three juniors on the team are Erin Chaffee, Rowan Jordan and Morgan Layne. One of the season highlights was the April 25 game against Zanesville in which Granville took a victory with a final score of 14-0. As of May 14, they have an 11-7 season record.

Baseball With some of the current seniors committing to college for baseball, the team has had an amazing season. A highlight of the season was the April 26 game against Mount Vernon, senior Andrew Nemec pitched a “perfect

Track & Field Determined to bounce back from the indoor season, the track & field team has been hard at work. Unfortunately, many injuries have affected the team, but after numerous visits to the athletic trainer’s office, the team is healing. There are a number of seniors on the team including Ashton Ross, Aidan Flaherty, Dominick Costa, Sawyer Hutchins, Davis Helman, Owen Ketron, Grant Masterson, Mason Liberti, Dylan Christian, Gavin Wells, Austin Roberts, Danielle Varrasso, Delaney Pruden, Alaina Smith, Ava Minton, Cate Scheiber, Nathan Newsom, Colin Sheehan, Owen Ketron, Regina Rose and Kylee Lescas. The team is excited to showcase their hard work in the Licking County League meet from May 11-12.

Boys Tennis The tennis team has had a tremendous season. With an all star team lead by seniors Ethan Genise, Tom Bain and Jack Simms, they have been hard at work.

Their hard work paid off all season with an impeccable season record of 10-1 as of May 17. The team is looking forward to the district championship which will be held the week of May 23.

ACES MOVE ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL Blue Aces decide to further their athletic careers in college

BY CADEN MCDERMOTT any Blue Aces have decided to play their sport at the next level. This is a huge accomplishment and each one deserves to be highlighted. See below to learn about each athlete.

BASEBALL Dylan Andrews plays middle infield for the Blue Ace baseball team. He will be playing at Otterbein University next season with teammate Andrew Nemec. Aidan Karen-Lackey plays center field and is currently leading Licking County in runs scored. He will be playing next season at Ashland University. Adrian Mangine is a catcher and first baseman. He received an Honorable Mention for the All LCL team. He will be playing at Kenyon College. Andrew Nemec pitches, plays infield, and outfield. He recently pitched the first ever perfect game in Granville baseball history. He will be joining Dylan at Otterbein University.

CHEER Delaney Pruden was a 3 year competition cheerleader, state champion and national champion in competition cheer. She will be cheering at the University of Cincinnati next year. Grace Gottschalk was a 3 year competition cheerleader, state champion, and national champion. She cheered at multiple all star gyms where she received notoriety. She will be cheering at Alma College.

FIELD HOCKEY Mallory Lindsay plays midfield for the girls lacrosse team and has led them to a great season. She will attend Ohio University to continue her academic and athletic career. Riley Miller has been in goal for the Girls Lacrosse team, she will continue to play at Belmont Abbey College.

FOOTBALL Dom Costa played wide receiver and cornerback at Granville, and after battling through injuries his senior season he will be playing at the next level at Ohio Wesleyan University. Keith Claypool a legend around GHS, through his hard work has earned a spot on the UNW St. Paul Eagles. He will be the first Blue Ace to play there.

Carsyn Crouch was a stand out three sport athlete, playing baseball, basketball, and football. He now takes his talents to Lindsey Wilson College. Devon Haley excelled in football and lacrosse, he won LCL Running Back of the year in football and 2nd Team All Region in Lacrosse his junior year. He will continue playing both sports at Davenport University. Christian Hilton lead the football team in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. He will go to his brother’s alma mater, the Citadel, to continue his academic and athletic career. Davidson Jump was the kicker for the Blue Aces, he knocked in

extra points at a 90 percent rate. He will continue to kick at Denison University Mason Liberti was a key member of the offensive line and he will be representing the LCL in the LCL vs. MVL All star game. He will be joining Costa and Vahalik at Ohio Wesleyan University. Colin Sheehan will be attending Ohio Dominican University, at Granville he was a stout interior defensive lineman. He was named 2nd Team All LCL. Bobby Vahalik was a captain and key two-way player, at Offensive line and Defensive line. Bobby was also named 1st Team All LCL and will also be representing in the All star game. He will be attending Ohio Wesleyan University. Kam Wright was an overwhelming force on the offensive and defensive line. At left tackle Kam racked up pancakes, and he was named 2nd Team All LCL. He will be playing at Ohio University.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Cate Scheiber was a star on the Girls Basketball team.

She received the honor of being named LCL player of the year and she set the school 3 point record. She will be continue her basketball career at Belmont Abbey College.

LACROSSE Kaison Durham played football and lacrosse at Granville. He currently holds the assist record for the lacrosse team and led them in scoring the past season. He will be joining Devon at Davenport University. Michael Sarap plays Midfield for the lacrosse team. He was a four-year letterman and a captain. He will be playing at Belmont Abbey College.

TENNIS Marie Weiss is a stand out tennis player for Granville, and she will continue to play in college at Carthage College.

TRACK Dylan Christian runs the 800m, 1600m, and 4x400m. He was an indoor track champion and placed 4th in Heat 2 last year at nationals. He will run at the University of Louisville.

Ella Laughbaum does the pole vault and set the school record for it. Ella will be going to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she will continue pole vaulting.

Regina Rose runs the 2 mile and the mile, and was a great runner for the cross country team. She will continue distance running at Bowling Green State University.

Gavin Wells threw for the track team and played a key role on the defensive line for the football team. He will continue to throw at Lake Erie College.

UMPIRE SHORTAGE IMPACTS HIGH SCHOOL GAMES Shortage is complely justified because of outrageous fans and coaches

BY COLDEN KADLIC round the nation, a shortage of umpires and officials has been affecting the play of not only youth sports but also high school varsity sports. In particular, high school baseball has been hit the hardest by this shortage. Across the county, varsity baseball teams are being forced to play several games with coaches officiating the game. In Central Ohio, for example, a D1 baseball team Olentangy High School was forced into this exact situation.

What is the reasoning for this shortage?

From first-hand experience as a youth sports umpire, I know that parents can be ruthless and very unkind to their officials who choose to umpire these games.

After one game in particular where my fellow umpire and I were officiating, my partner made a bad call to end the game. So what? Everyone messes up and everyone should accept this and move on, right? Wrong.

My partner and I were then cussed out and heckled by a majority of the fans and coaches present at the game. They even followed us to our

cars and continued to yell at us. Also, let me remind you this was a 12-yearold game. Parents were outraged over a bunch of 12-year-olds.

From my understanding, this shortage is completely justified because I

understand why umpires and officials do not want to put up with these outrageous fans and coaches. On top of this, the pay that these officials are receiving for having to deal with these situations is not at all worth it. Officials are being paid a very small amount to deal with constant heckling, which is why many will not return to the field.

To this problem, I provide the following solution: pay them more. If you want people to put up with the annoying fans and malicious coaches, we have to pay them more. The pay right now is around $45 a game, which sounds like good money, but it is not enough to but up with these problems.

These fans and coaches are ruining the experience for the kids and that must stop. At the end of the day, it should all be for the kids but right now they are not getting to experience the game of baseball to the fullest extent.

The umpire shortage must be fixed.

Not only do we need to pay them more, we need to treat them better, too.

LEGACY

Christian Hilton follows in his brother’s footsteps to attend The Citadel while also playing D1 football

BY DANIELLE VARRASSO summer cut short for an amazing opportunity.

As seniors are approaching graduation, college decisions begin to be made as to where they will attend college the next four years. A lot of times people will go places similar to their older siblings, or wherever they are given the opportunity to play sports. There is a lot that goes into the decision making process. For senior Christian Hilton a hard decision would be made easy.

Hilton has played football his whole life, and going into high school he really starting thinking about playing at the next level. With some injuries along the way, he did not have a clear plan of what was ahead for him but he worked really hard to reach his goals.

“He began working intensely in the spring of his junior year. After coming off of an injury his junior year and not being able to play to his full potential,” his mother Melissa Compton said.

The recruitment process for him was initiated through his brother who had attended college at The Citadel and graduated from there this past year. “My brother went to The Citadel and was a normal cadet so I had heard about the school and sent my film to see what would happen,” Hilton said. The coaches were extremely impressed with his talents; he received first team all district, first team LCL and All-State honorable mention.

He was offered a full ride scholarship to play Division 1 football at The Citadel.

Since The Citadel is a military college, a lot goes into the decision, but there were a lot of factors that helped him feel like it was the right choice. “I really enjoy the coaching staff that they have; they help make a tough place to go really feel like home. Also, the fact that it is in Charleston helped my decision” Hilton said.

Christian will also be a legacy student at The Citadel because his brother went there. “I am so excited for Christian to follow in the footsteps of his brother Connor in attending the Citadel, and Connor will get to hand him his diploma when he graduates from the Citadel in four years,” Compton said.

Playing football at The Citadel is going to be a lot of hard work. Hilton has to leave the third week of June for summer school and fall camp. He will use this time to “get used to The Citadel lifestyle before all of the upperclassmen return” Hilton said.

Although it will be hard, he is looking forward to the next four years of being able to do what he loves.“I am most excited about playing teams like Clemson and Ole Miss, and also the school helping me to become a better man in the long run,” Hilton said.

BY ELLA MORK lthough most students go to Ohio University, Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati, Miami University and many other schools around Ohio, the class of 2022 has a different trend where a lot of students will attend college in other states.

Although it is scary, some students are very excited to experience something different and new, which is why some students are choosing to attend out of school states instead of in-state. The most popular states that students applied to were Florida, New York and Indiana, but there are students going all over the place.

Students are choosing to go out of state so they can find themselves.

Conor Male will be extending his horizons as he attends the University of Oregon.

“I desire independence, and I feel the need to be out on my own for a little while so I can craft who I am,” senior Conor Male said.

Natalie Simmons will be heading to the beach.

“I chose to go to Florida Gulf Coast so I could experience living in as many places as I can,” senior Natalie Simmons said.

A lot of students are excited to get out of Ohio because of its poor weather. If students have the opportunity to go live in warmth, or to the beach, or mountains, a lot are going to take the risk.

“I am excited for the warm weather and the friends I’m gonna make,” Simmons said.

Some students like the beach, but some students are excited to have mountains and beautiful scenery.

“The scenery around Oregon is stunning and fulfills my need to be surrounded by nature,” Male said.

A lot of students are deciding to go out of state for college because of their desire to find something new.

New friends, new environments, new scenery and just new experiences in general.

“I think going out of state will be beneficial for me because I can be in a new environment and meet people from different places, rather than feeling trapped in the same place,”

said senior Reagan Klein, who will be attending East Tennessee State University.

Lanie Schott will be attending Belmont University in Nashville.

“I am most excited about the new atmosphere and environment in Nashville but I am definitely nervous about leaving behind my friends and family,” senior Lanie Schott said.

Although it is new and scary, the senior class of 2022 will be making remarkable memories and new experiences by having the opportunity to leave Ohio and go to beautiful new states.

Members of the class of 2022 will attend school in 25 different states outside of Ohio.

The most popular out of state destinations are in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Tennessee.

OUR TEN BEST MEMORIES

F

or the class of 2022, twelve years has been a long time to collect memories. From class field trips, to holiday parties and finally graduation, we have memories from these unforgettable events.

1. First day of school The first day of school was always a big deal for us and our parents. For a lot of us it was the first time we were away from our parents for a long period of time. We rode the bus for the first time and made all of our first best friends. It was the first look of what life would be like for the next few years.

2. Class parties Class parties made holidays so much more fun and memorable. For Halloween, we all dressed up in any costume and played games and had lots of food. For Valentine's Day, we all decorated a box and everyone brought valentines to put in each other's boxes which was so exciting. Christmas parties were filled with lots of snacks and festivities.

3. ABC countdown (third grade) The ABC countdown was a 26 day countdown at the end of third grade where we would do different activities that

start with a certain letter. C was always crazy hair day, usually D was donut day, T was tie-dye day. It made the end of the school year so much fun and it was a great send off to head to the intermediate school the next year.

4. Super Games Super Games were always the best day of the year. On one of the last days of school, there were inflatables everywhere, obstacle courses, lots of games and water games. It was such a blast and it was super nice to be able to spend time outside with all of our friends with activities you can usually only do once a year.

5. Biz-Town In 5th grade we went to Columbus where a whole town was set up. Each student was assigned a different job. I was a bank teller and all the students came to me to get cash for the day. There were photographers, pizza workers, insurance agents, etc. It was a very fun trip that gave us an insight on the real world. As a kid, acting like our parents for a day was crazy to us and made a very fun and important memory. It taught us a lot about adulting at a young age but in a super fun and creative way.

6. Kings Island At the end of 6th grade, we went to Kings Island in groups of 5 or 6 people with a chaperone. We rode roller coasters all day and it was definitely the best field trip ever because of all the different rides, games, food and other activities.

We got to pick our group so we were all with our best friends and had a long bus ride and then had fun all day.

7. 6th grade party On one of the last days of 6th grade there was a huge class party outside with games, dunk tanks, donuts and pizza, and music. It was so much fun to be able to celebrate

our transition into middle school with all of our friends. The teachers made sure to make our last few days at the intermediate school special with all of the different activities.

8. Washington D.C. Washington, D.C., was definitely one of the most memorable field trips. We were with all of our friends and making fun memories. We got to stay in a room with friends of our choice and walk around all day to see historic buildings.

We got to go out to eat everyday and bond with our grade.

9. Senior football season With Covid restricting a lot of sports seasons, the seniors were ready to make student sections and tailgates a lot of fun for our last year. With the football team going undefeated and making it to the final four, it made it so much more exciting and fun.

10. Senior Prom Senior Prom was definitely the best dance. It was completely normal, which we hadn’t experienced in a while.

There was good music, photo booths, drinks and tables. We got to go to dinner and celebrate After Prom with all of our friends.

Music is a big part of our lives. Some of the best songs we know today were released during our childhood. This playlist is the top songs from every year we have been in school.

2008-2009 (Pre-school) "Party in the U.S.A." - Miley Cyrus One of the greatest songs of our childhood. With the right amount of singing and beat.¨Party in the U.S.A.” is a classic for all students.

2009-2010 (Kindergarten) "I Gotta Feeling" - The Black Eyed Peas One of the best dancing songs ever. ¨I Gotta feeling¨ can really change your mood and make sure you have a good time.

2010-2011 (1st Grade) "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" -Katy Perry An all time classic.

With the T.G.I.F chant being one of the known part of the song, it sets the standard.

2011- 2012 (2rd Grade) "Call Me Maybe" - Carly Rae Jepsen One of the best sing along songs of our childhood, “Call me maybe” is an all time classic.

2012-2013 (3rd Grade) "Scream & Shout" - Will.i.am Another great song with a perfect amount of singing along and upbeat tempo.

“Scream & Shout” is a great song for all events.

2013-2014 (4th grade) "Happy" - Pharrell Williams Arguably the best sing along song on this list, “Happy” is an all time classic.

2014- 2015 (5th grade) "Watch Me" - Silento One of the most well-known dances from our childhood comes from “Watch Me.” The Whip and Nae- Nae are still an all time dance for the ages.

2015-2016 (6th grade) "Panda" - Desiigner “Panda” is an all time classic of our time in middle school. One of the top rap songs to release during our childhood.

2016-2017 (7th grade) "Black Beatles"- Rae Sremmurd “Black Beatles” started the Mannequin challenge, which was one of the biggest dance trends of our childhood.

2017-2018 (8th grade) "In My Feelings" - Drake The “In My Feelings” challenge was a big Instagram trend where people get out of their cars and dance.

2018-2019 (Freshman year) "Sicko mode" - Travis Scott One of the top rap songs to release while the class of 2022 was in high school. “Sicko Mode” is a favorite of all students.

2019-2020 (Sophomore year) "Whats Poppin"- Jack Harlow One of the top songs to release during quarantine, “Whats Poppin” is one of the best rap songs of our time in high school.

2020-2021 (Junior year) "Good 4 You" - Olivia Rodrigo "Good 4 You" was one of Rodrigo's first hits and till this day it is still a great song to jam out too.

2021-2022 (Senior year) "As It Was" -Harry Styles The top current song of 2022, “As it was” is a great mix of upbeat and singing.
