Without the Bow River, there would be no Cochrane. The river’s beauty and natural resources have long been a source of pride for the town. Flowing through the heart of Cochrane, the Bow River has played an essential role in the town’s history, serving as a vital water source and a center for recreational activities.
In the early days, Indigenous peoples, including the Stoney Nakoda and Blackfoot, relied on the river for sustenance, using its waters for fishing and navigation. European settlers also recognized the river’s value and, during the 19th century, the Bow River became an essential transportation route for fur traders and explorers traveling through the region.
As Cochrane grew, the river continued to play a pivotal role in the town’s development. The Bow River’s abundant fish population, including prized trout, made it an ideal location for fly fishing enthusiasts. The picturesque waters and surrounding natural beauty attracted visitors, turning Cochrane into a thriving recreational destination.
Today, the Bow River remains a popular spot for a variety of outdoor activities, such as fly fishing, river rafting, paddleboarding, and camping at Bow Rivers Edge Campground. The river’s diverse ecosystem supports numerous fish species, making it a haven for anglers looking to catch a trophy fish.
