A Personal and Unique Touch

Every candidate has a personal story — their own unique reason for running — and the dynamics in each race are different. We have a hands-on consulting model that reflects our belief in the individuality of each race and the special attention each one deserves.

Cookie-Cutter Communications Don’t Work

We believe that a cookie-cutter, template approach doesn’t work. We have found over and over again that communicating a candidatespecific, authentic message resonates and wins. Your personal story is what makes you stand out and makes you relatable to voters.

OUR APPROACH

Creativity + Targeting = Victories

We pride ourselves on creative work that grabs voters’ attention. But the best creative work in the world doesn’t matter if it doesn’t get to the right voters. That’s why Blue Nation Strategies starts with a deep dive into each district’s data. Then we work with the pollsters and client team members to develop efficient universes, utilizing the latest models.

Woman-Owned and Woman-Run Firm

Blue Nation Strategies is proud to be a woman-owned and woman-run firm with experience in 30 states. Working-class women continue to be a key persuadable audience. And historically, women make up the majority of primary and general electorates. Bottom line: Having women and diversity at the table matters and increases your chance of winning.

OUR APPROACH

CASE STUDY: COLIN ALLRED TX-32 Former NFL player and Obama administration staffer Colin Allred was in a seven-way primary in the spring of 2018. He was up against an EMILY’s List-backed candidate, a DCCC-backed candidate, and a former local TV anchor with huge name ID. Needless to say, this was a tough race. Our opponents quickly went up on TV with large buys in the Dallas market. Since we couldn’t compete on TV, the Allred campaign decided to own the doors and mailboxes. We ran a 10-piece plan in the primary, winning the race by 20 points and moving on to the runoff. In the runoff, we dropped 14 pieces and won the race by 38 points. In the general election, Colin beat incumbent Pete Sessions by six points, outperforming Hillary Clinton’s 2016 win in the district. In total, we produced 53 pieces of mail between the primary, the runoff, and the general.

CASE STUDIES

CASE STUDY: NJ LCV

Gubernatorial Primary and General 2017 Phil Murphy started off his race in good shape, due in no small part to the failings of Chris Christie; however, there was still some work to do with women in both the primary and general. Working with the NJ League of Conservation Voters and the National organization, we dropped a total of seven pieces. Phil’s Clean Energy by 2050 pledge was particularly persuasive with young women. We mailed younger women in both the primary and the general using social pressure tactics to help drive up turnout among that critical group. Phil coasted to victory in both races.

CASE STUDIES

CASE STUDY: SEIU MARYLAND AND DC STATE COUNCIL —

Baltimore County Executive Race Primary 2018 In a four-way primary for Baltimore County Executive, the SEIU Maryland and DC State Council endorsed Johnny Olszewski Jr. and decided to run an independent expenditure on his behalf. The race was a long shot. In a June 9 public poll by the Baltimore Sun, the front-runner Senator Jim Brochin was up 16 points over Johnny. The IE made a bold choice to go negative against Brochin while other IEs in the state were pushing out positive communication for Johnny. We focused on Brochin’s bad votes in the Senate — he had voted against sick leave, against raising the minimum wage, and against tax breaks for middle-class families. With a well-targeted three-piece mail program, we brought down Brochin’s support, which allowed Johnny to pull off a stunning 17-vote victory over Brochin.
