VISUAL ARTS SALLY HERRON Congratulations to the Visual Arts students of 2023. This has been such an exciting group of students to teach, both in art theory and in their practical work. I will miss their fantastic discussions and genuine interest in art, as well as their terrific company. I was always excited to watch this inspiring group of students progress towards the next step in their courses, culminating in completing their HSC body of work. Students in the class of 2023 were all so enthusiastic about art. The entire class submitted portfolio applications to the National Art School’s Art Intensive 3 Unit course and were accepted. This course was held over two weeks during the school holidays and this is the first time we have had a whole class selected. Ana, Eva and Lily attended printmaking and Izabella, Angus, Phoebe and Eve attended life drawing. This immersive experience set the students up beautifully to explore their own personal interests in a material practice. The printmaking students were so engaged with the medium that we found a local printmaker, Linda Swinfield, who mentored Lily and Eva in the practice of etching into aluminium. Ana worked with Intaglio printing using copper. The printmakers from Year 12 in turn inspired students in Year 11, who also

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

explored the technique of etching their drawings into aluminium plates. Year 12 students have their own studio in the Art and Design building in which they can work in their free periods or after school. In what is always a very active room. Angus and Phoebe were developing large oil paintings, Izabella was drawing and Eve was sculpting, including many experiments with casting. I would like to commend the students on their commitment to developing their art practice, coming in after school and during the holidays for studio immersion days. Students were able to engage with exploring new ideas, experimenting with materials, making discoveries and working through a rigorous process to achieve strong material resolution and meet their deadline. Congratulations to Ana Swait who has been selected for ARTEXPRESS for her drawing and printmaking body of work ‘Mundane Reverence’. We look forward to seeing what these talented young men and women choose to do in the future and wish them all well in whatever path they decide to pursue in life. I know they will be successful. FUTURE BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE PAST ANGUS HERRON MEDIUM: OIL PAINTING AND SCULPTURE INFLUENCES: THE TOWER OF BABEL, PETER BRUGEL, HIERONYMUS BOSCH, ANSELM KIEFER, TEETERING TOWERS, AYAKO TABATA, TATSUO MIYAJIMA, ANSLUM KEIFER, QUAY QUARTER TOWER (A vertical Village by Danish Architecture Firm 3XN in Collaboration with Sydney Architecture Firm BVN). Architecture plays a pivotal role in the structural integrity of society’s memory of time and place as a whole. Architecture creates the building blocks for communication, influencing how people isolate, interact and communicate. The subject of my work explores fundamental structures that have shaped our perception of the landscape of architecture. Structural form reflecting the technology, social constructs and values of the time and place in which it was made.

framework of our society. It is this framework that humanity connects through from the past to the present and into the unknown future. The adaptive reuse and upcycling of architecture from the past enabling sustainable futures is an exciting development in architecture. The goal of my work is to provoke a reaction from my audience as it comments on the future of architecture, contrasting between established isolation and the important connection we have with other humans.

This work contrasts the two dystopian futures we the audience can build together, allowing the audience to reimagine innovation, progress and connect. History perceives architecture as the

MUNDANE REVERENCE ANA SWAIT MEDIUM: DRAWING AND PRINTMAKING INFLUENCES: GIOVANNI,PIRANESI, HAYAO MIYAZAKI, SHAUN TAN, J.M.W TURNER, ANNIBALE SICONOLFI Selected for ARTEXPRESS We live in a world that can often feel overwhelming, disconnected and filled with chaos, constantly demanding our attention and time. Through my body of work, I aim to deconstruct the way we view and interact with our world, reminding the viewer of the beauty in the mundane whilst acknowledging the struggle of appreciating such moments of simplicity. Nonsensical and fantastical landscapes of crumbling traditional architecture combined with the infrastructure of our modern world serve to signify the persistence of an often overwhelming and stifling presence in our lives that transcends the boundaries of time. Taking inspiration from traditional explorations of the sublime as well as modern and contemporary works that incorporate fantasy and surreal elements, I wanted to depict a Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

confusing modern world that is overbearing whilst simultaneously crumbling and decaying, crowded with objects and faceless figures but not life and abundance. Within these chaotic landscapes simple moments of everyday life were placed, I sought to glorify and elevate the mundane to a place of reverence. Through my Intaglio prints, by depicting small details taken from each drawing, I wanted to provide contrast to the chaotic world created in my drawings, furthering the concept of elevating and appreciating the mundane. Adding stains and experimenting with the inking process, I sought to reinforce the idea of embracing the imperfections and chaos of life whilst finding beauty and solace in the simple and mundane.

REDRESSING FEMINISM EVA PASSLOW MEDIUM: PRINTMAKING INFLUENCES: JUDY CHICAGO, GRAYSON PERRY, BARBARA HANRAHAN, BARBARA KRUGER, GUERRILLA GIRLS, LIZA LOU, FRIDA KAHLO ‘Redressing Feminism’ is a vibrant and thought-provoking exploration of feminism throughout history and in my life. The prints appropriate iconic figures from art history painted by James Whistler, Sandro Botticelli, Edouard Manet and Artemisia. Drawing upon imagery, symbols and techniques used by trailblazing feminist pioneers such as Judy Chicago, Grayson Perry, Barbara Hanrahan, Barbara Kruger, Guerrilla Girls, Liza Lou and more. The series of five colourful beaded frames each house intaglio prints from aluminium etching plates, sheds light on the multifaceted struggles faced by women who challenged societal constructs. Each print is synthesized to create an intricate dialogue to recontextualise narratives, empower and celebrate the resilience and strength of women

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

throughout history. The interplay of objects and text around each central image serves to stimulate discourse on the complexities of societal expectations and evoke a critical analysis on the ever-evolving role of women in society. The series of prints invite contemplation of the complexities of female representation, liberation, and empowerment. Encapsulating a timeless call for societal transformation and acknowledgement of women in art and society. The flowers represent hope and new beginnings evocative of the way feminism has grown around societal structures they also make connection to many familiar feminist artists such as Frida Kahlo.

CHECKMATE: A PREDESTINED GAME EVE THOMAS MEDIUM: SCULPTURE, CLAY, PERSPEX AND WOOD INFLUENCES: BARRY FLANNAGAN, AI WEI WEI, MARY LOU COOK, DAMIEN HIRST, HENRI MATISSE, PABLO PICASSO, JEFF KOONS CHECKMATE: A PREDESTINED GAME explores the idea of breaking away from the structure society has predetermined for us and the importance of creative expression. It revolves around the saying “living to work or working to live”; how we let work determine our whole lives and whether or not we can even consider that to be ‘living’. My artwork was heavily inspired by Barry Flanagan’s Bronze Hares’. The Irish-Welsh sculptor and his organic, human-like rabbit sculptures influenced my choice of medium - ceramics - as well as the style of my smaller rabbits. Flanagan’s style was distinctively different from that of his minimalist classmates, further contributing to my idea of the importance of creative expression. The slightly unnerving nature of the rabbits, which I have appropriated from Flanagan, is created through the multiple of each rabbit, discarding any

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

sense of individuality; creating a feeling of replaceability that is too common within the work place. The lack of facial expression from the smaller rabbits that makes them indistinguishable is another carefully chosen element. They reflect the feeling of being trapped in a cycle of work where every day becomes the same, rendering emotions useless, ultimately leading people to become machines that live to work. My choice of laser cut tiles to replicate a chess board was to simulate the idea of life being a game in which we make choices which ultimately lead to an end result. The mirror tiles reflect the audience, urging them to reflect on their own lives and the choices, ultimately leading them to where they are today. The laser cut tiles contain quotes from famous artists and their comments on the art, creativity and how that often dies out with age.

Page 18

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN LILY MCKAY MEDIUM: PRINTMAKING INFLUENCES: JAN VAN DE VELDE II, DAVID HOCKNEY, UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE, DAVID KLEE Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken’, describes the experience of being faced with ‘two paths diverging in wood’ and having to decide which one to take. This poem is a metaphor for life, reflecting the labyrinth of decisions we face, each with unforeseen significance in shaping our journey. This work explores this idea by depicting landscapes which convey a visual narrative, They observe the crossroads encountered in life, points at which we may find ourselves having to decide whether to follow the path laid out, or forge a new one. The inclusion of a human-designed environment highlights the interaction between us and our contexts - perhaps our decision to forge or follow is influenced by those who came before us, and the marks they left on the world we share. The colour red weaves its way throughout the work, taking the viewer on a journey through the prints.

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

Through this, the viewer simultaneously experiences cohesion and fragmentation as they traverse the natural landscape, which reflects the landscape of human experience. Printmaking (etching and lino), using techniques of chine colle, stencilling, hand-colouring, double printing and stitching, serve to describe the dynamic, layered, gradual and persistent process of exploration. Standing back, you see the entirety of the journey. Looking more closely, you see the nuance and significance of each step.

THE ECSTASY IN REVERIE A RAVE RENAISSANCE PHOEBE HINES MEDIUM: OIL PAINTING INFLUENCES: RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY, BAROQUE, ROCOCO, GIAN LORENZO BERNINI, FRANCISCO GOYA My series of oil paintings entitled, “The Ecstasy in Reverie; (A Rave Renaissance”) visualises the intricate interplay between religious ecstasy and the enigmatic world of Rave culture and what it means to experience a feeling of ecstasy. Through a lens of profound femininity, I seek to illuminate the parallels and connections that exist within these seemingly divergent realms, crafting a message that celebrates the emancipatory power of both spirituality and unbridled self-expression. The inspiration for this series germinated from a deep fascination with the human quest for transcendence, as often depicted in Baroque and Rococo paintings. As I explored the historical significance of religious ecstasies, I discovered striking parallels to the contemporary cultural phenomenon of Rave culture. Both embody an earnest pursuit of liberation, unity and euphoria, the timeless yearning to connect with something greater than ourselves. Central to this exploration are the female religious figures I depict in my portraits. (Saint Terresa and The Virgin Mary.) I draw inspiration from these icons, whose stories reverberate across time. With each canvas, I aim to breathe neon life into their narratives and spiritual prowess, in a setting away from any God; diverting away from any one God. I wanted to challenge conventional depictions that often undermine their Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

significance in religious narratives or simplify their existence to serve a God or bare children. Simultaneously, my paintings venture into the pulsating world of rave culture, where hedonism and spirituality coexist in a mesmerizing fusion. The ecstatic dance, music, and communal euphoria experienced within these gatherings echo the rapturous spirit found in religious rituals. By juxtaposing these two seemingly distinct worlds, I seek to blur the boundaries and reveal the shared essence of euphoria and spiritual awakening, ultimately proposing that both experiences share common ground in the pursuit of transcendence and liberation. My larger painting draws inspiration from Francisco Goya’s “The Third Of May,” as this work was the inspiration behind having a subject bathed in divine light with their hands raised. I also made the choice to depict Joan Of Arc in the background of this work with her armour visible on the left, as a nod to my smaller portraits of female religious figures. As I celebrate the divine feminine as subject matter my choice to use a male as my largest subject may seem counter-intuitive. I made this choice because men are typically represented in religious artwork as stone cold Gods; I wanted to depict this male figure showing raw and emotional ecstasy, further representing my themes of juxtaposition. Page 22

OBSERVATORY 2023 IZABELLA CRAIG MEDIUM: DRAWING INFLUENCES: KEDUMBA DRAWING COLLECTION ANDREW IRELAND, PETER GRZIWATZ As a teenager, I observe the world around me quite often whether it's myself and observing the way I feel or look, or the people I observe community to their daily life and fixed routines. The simplest activities like shopping or going to the park. We live in a Contemporary age filled with technology we often neglect the simpler things in life. Contemporary society has become self-centred people with social media I wanted show contrast of life with the things I enjoy and observe, like sitting in a park, doing the grocery shopping, or going to the movies with friends. I wanted to obtain the last few years of the simpler things I enjoy about being a teenager because all the fleeting moments will soon be vague stories. From the struggle of Covid-19 to observing the rural and urban landscape and architecture around me. The presentation of my work is deliberate to showcase my study area, placing my sketches within each other and drawing on whatever I can to capture these moments. The layering of images emphasises the disorganisation of thoughts every Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

student experience. The five figures placed around the work represent the five years of high school I have been through, leaving a trail of exploration, as the viewer becomes the sixth as I am at the end. Through my artworks, I strive to capture these fleeting emotions that make up my teenage experience. I am inspired by the rawness and vulnerability of this stage of my life, and I aim to convey these semiotic symbols in my body of work. As a teenager, I am aware of the complexities of the world we live in such as the global pandemic schooling, careers, and opportunities. I want to explore the beauty and the struggles we all must navigate through, exploring what it os like to be a teenager. I want my work to engage people, and to reflect the world and the lifestyle I live in and have, ranging from my observations of people, my self-portrait, school, and objects. The use of traditional drawings, playing with scale, perspectives and mixed media allows me to capture the moments I see. My work invites you the v to my own life placed on a shelf for display. MULTIFUNCTIONAL BENCH PRESS ANGUS HERRON DESIGN BRIEF: Design and produce a multifunctional bench press that is able to neatly be stored away when necessary. It must be targeted to people aged 18-70 years. This product must accommodate consumers’ needs of safety, space, function and aesthetics. To empower people to take control of their fitness journey from the comfort and privacy of their home. “Accessible Everywhere, to Achieve Everywhere”. As we are part of a developing society, we are constantly making breakthroughs in health and fitness. Society as a collective has become more aware of the benefits that may come from participating in certain physical activities, such as weight resistance training. However, people's ability to be physically active was impacted by COVID-19. This saw a shift in the dynamics of the fitness industry and, in 2022, the emergence of the at-home fitness trend. A survey conducted by the American Council on Exercise found that 72% of people in the United States who responded were working out at home during the pandemic, up 31% from the previous year. Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

In addition, the survey conducted by Sports England that found that 63% of people in the UK were working at home during the pandemic. Furthermore, GoodFirms, a global software company conducting research on fitness apps, found that 56.1% of people now work at home. With this being the case, living space is important, however there are indications that the average living space in housing may be decreasing in some regions or countries. This is due to factors such as urbanisation, affordability challenges, changing housing preferences, and housing density. Furthermore, the growth of the self-storage industry can also be an indicator of cluttered houses. According to the Self-Storage Association, as of 2020 there were approximately 48,500 self-storage facilities in the United States alone, providing over 2.9 billion square feet of rentable space. This suggests that many households may be using self-storage units to store excess belongings due to cluttered homes.

SUSTAINABLE SPORTSWEAR ELLEN GLASSON DESIGN BRIEF: To design and manufacture a clothing line, made from bamboo materials. The clothing line will be made for Generation Z, for both males and females wanting to make an ecological purchase. I needed to ensure that my products are suitable and appealing for the target audience and considered the ergonomics of the consumer. I also consider the target age demographics aesthetic and feature preferences. The designs were to be as sustainable and ecological as possible while making manufactural decisions.

WINDOW AWNING ESCAPE DEVICE EVE THOMAS DESIGN BRIEF: To design and produce a fully functional system that disengages the chain and stays on an awning window, allowing the user to push the window out far enough to escape through it. The system must be usable for young children to adults, though the range is focused on the consumer age of 34-65 years as this is the target market. This system is designed to be used in an emergency situation, such as a fire, and therefore must be designed for ease of use. The aim of product is to save lives as well as promoting fire safety and awareness. After witnessing the 2019 bushfires firsthand and reading about numerous cases of people losing their lives in house fires due to the inability to escape, I knew more had to be done in order to not only help fire fighters rescue people with more ease, but to also empower people who are trapped

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

indoor. The lack of safety devices surrounding windows, especially as they evolve and designs change, (as seen with awning windows), has led me to design a device which can help counter the risk of being trapped inside your house when in an emergency situation. Awning windows are one of the most popular window types in Australia, leaving many families at risk of being unable to escape their home when in a house fire situation. Fatalities occur in situations like these due to poor planning and the lack of control over the situation. My device plans to change that, by equipping people with the necessary information and tools they need in order to keep themselves safe.

BASKETBALL RETURN SYSTEM GRIFFIN GILL DESIGN BRIEF: To design and construct a basketball shot return device for basketball players looking to improve their shooting ability.

This design allows the user to practise by themselves at home, or in a public place, which is made possible by its portability.

This product is targeted at players of all ages, but specifically people aged 10-25 years, as this is when building and improving upon skills is most important.

This device allows the user to improve their shooting ability on any basketball hoop, without needing another person to rebound.

This device is intended to last a substantial amount of time as it doesn’t rely on technology, which eliminates the possibility of built-in obsolescence.

PORTABLE POP UP IRRIGATION UNIT HENRY BURRELL DESIGN BRIEF: To design a pop-up portable irrigation unit which is a cheaper and easier alternative for both the weekend gardener and companies working with gardens or small areas of flora. The target market for this unit are home gardeners and companies whose businesses are based around cultivation of plants. This easy to set up system will provide people working in these fields with a fast and portable irrigation unit, that only needs a connection to running water to be functional. Not only can this irrigation unit provide plants with the required amount of water and sunlight, but it can also be used to provide shade for people.

the vegetation below. This unit will have adjustable legs allowing for different sized plants/vegetation to fit underneath. The unit will as be fitted with a shade cover/ceiling, that can be removed and replaced with a birdnetting cover, keeping the plants safe from any animals that might consume them. TRAIL BUILDERS BIKE BAG JETT FENDALL DESIGN BRIEF: To design and produce a functional tool carrying bag for mountain bikers. The bag must be quality built and display an achromatic colour scheme, as it suits the majority of bikes. The bag must be easy to carry, both on and off the bike. The bag must be able to fit at least a standard sized shovel securely, without inconveniencing the rider. This designed and manufactured product will be targeted at increasing the safety and convenience of bike riders. Many young enthusiastic mountain bikers like to build their own trails and features. They usually ride to the build site carrying a tool in one hand and riding with the other. This not only endangers the rider by lessening the amount of their bike steering control, it can also impact their surrounding environment, whether they are on a trail, road or pathway. The idea of the design is to safely and

Blue Mountains Grammar School Art & Design Awards 2023

quickly attach tools to a bike frame, without inconveniencing the rider. This will allow other riders to ride safely with two hands and without having to worry about carrying tools throughout the ride. The main desire in pursuing this design is to make something bike-related that suits our locality in the Blue Mountains and the demographic of outdoor adventurers, specifically the problem of carrying your trailriding tools. This is a problem that has been solved for by the design and manufacture of the Trail Builders Bike Bag.

Page 44

FOLDABLE CAR CAMPING BED MAX ANCIC DESIGN BRIEF: This foldable Car Camping Bed aims to make it easier and more ideal when camping in the back of your car. The products features assisting the user with a pleasurable experience while camping. This is achieved by the folding feature of the product, transforming it into a comfortable seating arrangement facing out of the back of the car. This keeps you protected from the weather and allows the user to have their legs fully stretched out and also provides a place to rest their back, as opposed to sitting in the front or passenger seats with minimal space.

This camping solution allows the user a place to camp and use it in any situation. The option of portability and spontaneous camping caters for many people's needs and the storage space helps anyone needing to bring cooking and extra camping materials for any kind of adventure. It suits people who don’t want to set up a tent or would like to be protected from the weather and those who desire a functional, portable and easy to install product, to allow them to sleep in their car comfortably.

The design helps a specific camping target market of ages between 18 – 60 years. The specific design is suited for a Subaru Forrester, but the design and overall aspects can be adapted to suit any car. It must have a clean and aesthetic finish, while being safe for users.

THE LAZY GAMER WILL ZAKIS DESIGN BRIEF: This bedside table is aimed at the casual gamer, providing a way to entertain, and having a functional bedside table. The target audience for this design will be gamers.

This design allows for the ‘Lazy Gamer’ to focus on playing their multitude of games in the comfort and safety of their own bedroom. It also allows for the versatility of switching between consoles and games, without getting up from your bed to do it.

This design is unique as there is nothing on the market that allows for a multiple-console bedside table. The goal for the design is to have a bedside table that is gamer friendly and can hold 1-2 gaming consoles, specifically PS5, XBox X, and Nintendo Switch. The unit must also have room for chargers, games, a drawer and a flat surface to hold the expected items for a bedside table. The materials that are already acquired are the two consoles (PS5 and Nintendo Switch), games and chargers.

BEDSIDE MEDICINE TABLE ZOE LONG DESIGN BRIEF: Design and produce a medication reminder and distribution system that addresses the problem of medication non-adherence and provides a convenient and effective solution for individuals who require regular medication intake. The design aims to improve medication adherence and overall well-being by providing a physical reminder and easy access to medication. It aims to address the common issue of forgetting to take medication or taking it at incorrect times, which can have negative effects on an individual's health. The target market includes individuals of all ages who have a daily medication regimen, including older adults, individuals with chronic conditions, and those who require multiple medications. It can also be useful for caregivers who assist with medication administration.

reliable and customizable reminder system to alert the user to take their medication at specified times. Medication distribution: the system should provide a secure and automated method of medication distribution, ensuring accurate dosing and preventing errors. Versatility: the system should be able to accommodate different types of medications, such as pills, capsules, or liquid, and allow for easy loading and dispensing. The aesthetic for the bedside table should appeal to consumers for several reasons. It enhances the visual appeal of the room, allows individuals to express their taste, contributes to the mood and ambience of the space, and creates cohesion and harmony in the overall room.

The pertinent needs that are required are a reminder system: the design must incorporate a
