We will hear from experts and innovative early stage companies, and explore tough questions like: Why has the climate-tech ecosystem tended to overlook water-tech? The focus of this month’s edition is water quality. Of all the world’s water, only 0.3% is fresh and useable, so maintaining its quality is critical for our livelihoods and the health of the ecosystems on which we all depend.

The good news is that there are so many incredible individuals and organisations pioneering new technologies and approaches that help us maintain and restore water quality. This magazine aims to spotlight these solutions and show that despite the challenges - a world where all people can access clean water is no pie in the sky.

Cincinnati, Ohio, pilots new wastewater testing technology The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati is going to be piloting a technology solution to gain a better understanding of its wastewater network and more advanced sampling methods.

T

he Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) has decided to pilot a technology solution to expand on data related to wastewater quality.

In recent years, local water departments have turned to artificial intelligence to modernize their processes. And with the emergence of COVID-19, the use of technology to monitor wastewater has increased as a public health tool. In fact, some are even turning to robots to monitor sewage.

The district was looking for ways to bring sampling methods into the 21st century to improve capabilities and job performance, which led to the May installation of Kando’s Pulse solution, according to the assistant superintendent Scott Bessler.

Bessler explained that the utility’s current sampling methods have limitations in that they are labour intensive, time-consuming and come with certain safety hazards.

What Bessler describes as “the old-fashioned way” of sampling entails an autosampler unit that is about a foot and a half in diameter with a pump inside. To sample from a manhole, for example, the road would need to be blocked off, creating traffic implications for the community. However, the new technology mounts on the inside of the manhole, enabling quick collection and minimal disruptions.

This expands the capacity of field crews, as they may now be able to collect 10 samples in the time it used to take for one.

“So, there’s incredible value in that — and getting a better spatial resolution of what’s going on pollution-wise and water qualitywise in your collection system,” Bessler stated.

Kando offered MSD two different solutions, one focused on the wastewater quality side and another on the epidemiology side.

Currently, MSD is piloting the wastewater solution, with the potential to explore the other solution in the future.

Bessler expects to begin seeing results from the quality samplers soon, which will help inform where to deploy additional samplers.

In addition to expanding the utility’s footprint to cover a larger geographic range for a better understanding of the samples collected, there is also the ability to identify bad actors. If people are dumping or polluting, that impacts the entire water network.

Identifying the sources of such pollution can help MSD take action.

As Kando CTO Ricardo Gilead explained, strategically placed IoT units use real-time sensors that read the quality and quantity of wastewater flow. When an abnormal event like pollution occurs, the algorithms allow for pinpointing of the source. This then allows the authorities to mitigate the problem, through awareness or fines, or by informing utilities of the need to adapt and optimize treatment in the case of this type of event.

“So what we’re doing is bringing this technology of the IoT and AI to give decision-makers and operators the ability to make better decisions and act upon those problems,” said Gilead.

The data comes to decision-makers in different ways depending on their roles, Gilead said. There are a lot of dashboards and heat maps with various data points to help tell a story. In working with a public agency like MSD, the sensors and data from Kando are supplemental to the system and data points the utility already has in place for monitoring.

Gilead also explained the tech’s ability to help utilities focus on equity by understanding how pollution or viruses may affect specific parts of the community. This technology system allows for additional units to be added not only in one municipality or census tract but in a community itself, which sometimes overlaps a boundary.

Looking at it this way allows for an understanding of not only public health and climate impacts, but human behaviour, Gilead stated.

H2O GLOBAL NEWS M A G A Z I N E On both a federal and local level, Gilead said that this type of technology is increasingly being used for both climate adaptation and public health crisis mitigation.

Gilead explained that because the epidemiology solution allows testing for pathogens and bio and chemical markers in wastewater, not only can utilities monitor for things like COVID-19 – which Bessler said would be MSD’s focus in a pilot – but also for other viral diseases.

“We bring this tool, this system, that allows municipalities or governments to run this program of watching for what we know, but all the time, being prepared and finding the unknown,” Gilead said. “So when the next thing comes, we are ready for it.”

July 2022 Issue 2 The epidemiology pilot project is still in discussions, but Bessler said the utility is hoping to collaborate with the Cincinnati Health Department to determine where to put the samplers for the greatest impact.

He also underlined the work the state of Ohio is already doing in this regard. The state has the Ohio Coronavirus Wastewater Monitoring Network, a network across Ohio examining wastewater samples for COVID-19. And Bessler’s belief is that if wastewater utilities and public health experts continue to collaborate, there will be a significant public health impact at the community level.

Water leaders launch new center to accelerate action on global water and sustainability challenges DC-Based Reservoir Center for Water Solutions will Drive Action through Collaboration and Education

ater sector leaders, including academia, technology providers, trade associations and NGOs, are partnering in a new consortium to accelerate solutions to the world’s critical water and sustainability challenges. The Reservoir Center for Water Solutions, located in Washington, DC, will serve as a global collaboration hub to advance breakthrough water solutions and innovations.

Located on the banks of the Anacostia River, the Reservoir Center is designed to strengthen collaboration among the diverse set of stakeholders, from DC and beyond, who work together towards solving global water challenges.

The Center’s thirty-three partners – including the US Water Alliance, the International Water Association, EarthEcho International, the Aspen Institute, and Reservoir sponsor and global water technology company, Xylem – will bring together their resources, knowledge, and partnerships to drive progress.

Through innovation programs, education and mentoring, and community outreach, the Center aims to create a vibrant hub for ideation and action on challenges like water scarcity, resilience and water affordability.

“We’re at a critical juncture for water,” said Mami Hara, CEO of the US Water Alliance. “Infrastructure stimulus and innovation mean we are now better placed than ever to address challenges around investment in water, climate resilience, water equity, and more. The Reservoir Center will be an important catalyst for progress – providing a common ground to advance knowledge sharing, cultivate partnerships and foster inclusive participation.”

The Reservoir Center will be formally opened later today, during a ceremony attended by public officials from the U.S. and abroad, as well as a broad array of water affiliates and industry stakeholders. During the event, city officials from Washington, DC and retired National Football League (NFL) player and two-time Super Bowl champion, Chris Long, will deliver welcoming remarks. Established in 2015, the Chris Long Foundation’s Waterboys initiative unites elite athletes and passionate fans in support of a single shared cause – providing clean, accessible drinking water to communities in need.

Ahead of its launch, the Center has already hosted a variety of ramp-up events ranging from river clean-ups, networking gatherings, and webinars, including a multistakeholder discussion on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Following the launch today, the Center will host a two-day discussion titled “Mobilizing Innovation to Advance Climate Resilience in the Water Sector” on June 21st and 22nd.

NOWA, the energy, water, and hydrogen subsidiary of NEOM, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japanese trading company, ITOCHU, and Veolia, a global leader in water, waste, and energy management solutions. As part of the MoU, the companies have agreed to collaborate to develop a first-of-its-kind selective desalination plant powered by 100% renewable energy in OXAGON, NEOM’s advanced manufacturing and innovation city.

Set to produce its early-water in 2024, the new facility will be key to realizing ENOWA’s ambitions to create a sustainable, abundant water supply for residential, industrial, and commercial use.

Aligned with NEOM’s commitment to developing a circular economy, the new state-of-the-art plant will use advanced membrane technology to produce separate brine streams. This enables ENOWA to produce brine-derived products, which will be developed and monetized downstream. Brine, which is usually considered a waste output of desalination, will be used to produce significant quantities of valuable industrial materials that can be used locally or exported internationally.

Commenting on the MoU, Peter Terium, CEO of ENOWA, said: “Partnering with global leaders in sustainable water solutions is key to NEOM’s ambition to become a global benchmark for integrated sustainable water systems. At ENOWA, our vision is to

create a sustainable abundance of life’s most essential elements, all in harmony with nature. We will be producing, treating, and reusing water in one of the most water-stressed regions in the world, through sustainable, innovative and integrated solutions.

This new desalination plant is one example of the type of sustainable infrastructure and circular economy we are developing to meet our zero-carbon footprint and zero-waste goals.”

The new plant will meet the water needs of NEOM with a production capacity of 500,000m3 of desalinated water per day by project completion in 2025, approximately 30% of NEOM’s forecasted total water demand. In line with NEOM’s environmental goals, it will use advanced and innovative membrane separation technologies to produce water, as well as concentrated brine streams. This enables the brine to be classified as a product, rather than waste, therefore minimizing the plant’s environmental impact and redefining the entire business model for desalination facilities of the future. Brine generated from the desalination plant will be treated by ENOWA to feed industries utilizing High Purity Industrial Salt, Bromine, Boron, Potassium, Gypsum, Magnesium and Rare Metal feedstocks.

Kenji Otsuka, CEO for Middle East Bloc of ITOCHU, added: “ITOCHU is honored and proud to collaborate with ENOWA and Veolia to develop this landmark desalination plant in NEOM which advances the concept of Zero Liquid Discharge. With our

Student Innovators From 51 Countries Compete to Solve Global Water Issues High school and university winners of Xylem Ignite Global Student Innovation Challenge claim $20,000 prize purse More than 800 high school and university students from around the globe accepted the challenge from water technology leader, Xylem, to take on water and climate issues through the second annual Xylem Ignite Global Student Innovation Challenge competition.

“We’re committed to championing student innovators because young people hold the key to a more water-secure future,” said Patrick Decker, Xylem’s CEO. “The results of this year’s competition show the power of their creativity and passion to address major water challenges.”

Team SWiFT from Santa Clara, California, is the grand prize winner in the secondary (high) school category, awarded for their efforts to improve the life span of a water pump. “The big problem is that water scarcity and water stress are plaguing many countries in Africa,” noted the team. “More than one million hand pumps installed there support rural communities with one in five people relying on them for drinking water.” By creating a unique design to reduce repair time and provide easy access to troubleshooting, the team was able to address a 30% pump failure rate.

Now in its second year, the Xylem Ignite Global Student Innovation Challenge drew interest from students in 51 countries. Over an eight-week period, students were tasked with developing ideas to solve one of four critical water challenges—data storytelling for water insecurity, creating a floating city master plan, keeping water flowing in rural communities and kickstarting water’s race to net zero.

Xylem will recognize the grand prize winners in a virtual ceremony to be held today. In total, the judges identified 12 winning teams who will receive money from the $20,000 prize pool.

The winners of this year’s competition will also be given the opportunity to enroll in Xylem’s Ignite Innovation Incubator, a program that provides support for participants to scale their concepts and advance them toward market readiness.

Boston Water and Sewer Commission selects Stantec for next phase of US$150 Million East Boston Sewer Separation project

Phase IV advances a 30-year initiative to improve Boston Harbor water quality while modernizing infrastructure in the rapidly evolving neighborhood

S

tantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has been selected to lead design services on Phase IV of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission’s (BWSC) East Boston Sewer Separation project. The project is part of a comprehensive 30-year initiative to reduce pollutants discharged to Boston Harbor and its tributary waters and to modernize water infrastructure in the rapidly developing neighborhood.

Historic cities like Boston face a unique challenge in effectively managing stormwater as many older systems feature combined sewers that carry both stormwater and sewage. During heavy rainfall, these systems are prone to being overloaded and are designed to release excess flows into local bodies of water. To better manage overflows and protect water quality – particularly as rainfall events are becoming more frequent and more intense – the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority is implementing a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Control Program that involves modernizing this infrastructure with the latest technology. East Boston is among the communities at the center of this effort.

“In collaboration with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority as part of its CSO Control Program, the East Boston Sewer Separation project represents a critical step toward

improving water quality in Boston Harbor,” said John Sullivan, BWSC chief engineer.

The work will enhance water, sewer, and storm drainage infrastructure which is vital in supporting the ongoing growth and prosperity of the East Boston community. Phase IV of the project involves separating approximately 230 acres of combined sewer area, along with installing new storm drains, updating existing sewers, replacing adjacent aging water mains, and modifying existing regulator structures. As lead designer, the Stantec team will complete conceptual designs, hydraulic modeling, master planning, and final design documents, including pre-construction services.

“Water infrastructure plays a crucial role in a city like Boston, where factors such as climate change, population growth, and new development only further stress existing resources,” said Mike Carroll, Stantec Project Manager. “We’re proud to continue a decades-long relationship with the BWSC to improve the historic and essential waterways while helping modernize this infrastructure across several neighborhoods to support residents and businesses into the future.”

A decades-long commitment to Boston’s water infrastructure Stantec has partnered with the BWSC for more than 30 years, collaborating to complete some of Boston’s most complex and

Stantec has supported the BWSC with planning, design, and construction phase services on more than 40 contracts with a combined value of US$420 million. The scope of these projects includes installing 51 miles of water main piping, 29 miles of new sanitary sewer, and 41 miles of new storm drain.

Most recently, the team completed work on Phase III of the East Boston Sewer Separation project where planning and design services were completed in accordance with a fast-track schedule. Using the Commission’s hydrologic/hydraulic model, Stantec prepared plans for the installation of 9,000 feet of new

July 2022 Issue 2 water main, 4,000 feet of new sewer, and 7,300 feet of new storm drain. The project also involved the rehabilitation of 2,300 feet of existing wastewater piping and the modification of three regulator manholes to improve hydraulic performance and reduce overflows.

The AAEES names Dr. Pusker Regmi a 40 Under 40 honouree Senior engineer joins elite group of rising environmental engineering and science professionals.

rown and Caldwell is pleased to announce Dr. Pusker Regmi has been recognized as a 40 Under 40 awardee by The American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists (AAEES).

The AAEES 40 Under 40 Recognition Program was introduced to honor talented individuals who have advanced the fields of environmental science or environmental engineering demonstrably within the last 12 months. Winners are chosen by a panel of past recipients who weigh business successes and civic/philanthropic activities equally.

A respected industry leader and experienced process engineer, Dr. Regmi’s groundbreaking contributions to the wastewater treatment industry have significantly benefitted utilities globally. He has been instrumental in advancing new and innovative processes for treating and handling wastewater, including methods now commonly used for wastewater treatment intensification.

He has led the development of many novel process control strategies and technologies, including AvN®, a highly transformative nitrogen removal process for efficient wastewater treatment.

Most recently, he was a lead contributor to the water industry’s first Digital Twin Readiness Guide.

In addition to his leading research and design of innovative wastewater treatment systems, Dr. Regmi regularly contributes to the water profession via numerous peerreviewed papers, presentations, and participation in professional organizations, including the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association.

Outside of project responsibilities, Dr. Regmi is a passionate mentor, inspiring the next generation of engineering leaders to develop scientifically sound solutions to better the environment.

“I am delighted Pusker’s scientific contributions coupled with his outstanding service to the water industry have been recognized with this thoroughly deserved award,” said Brown and Caldwell Vice President Dr. Jose Jimenez.

Using assessments and maintenance to tackle your CSO targets

The use of Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) continues to place water companies under intense scrutiny. In response to bleak Environment Agency figures and scathing media reports, policymakers and the public have called for tighter management and tougher enforcement.

T

he move to better has begun. In March 2022, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) published a consultation on its Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan. The document outlined Government’s plan to address sewage overflows, detailing actions for operators, regulators, and consumers. At the same time, water companies are exploring innovative solutions to boost network capacity and cut reliance on CSOs.

Matthew Humphreys, Utilities Sector Manager, Adler and Allan, discusses the role of ongoing assessment and maintenance in the race to reduce CSO spill incidents by 320,000 before 2050 – and the importance of changing the national narrative.

Reframing the CSO situation In recent years, a growing population, ageing infrastructure, and changing climate have placed extreme pressure on the UK’s water system. Centuries-old pipework has buckled under the strain, and CSO discharges – the system’s in-built ‘release valve’ – have sharply increased.

and wastewater companies expelled raw sewage into rivers more than 400,000 times during 2020. The EA’s Event Duration Monitoring (EDM) data – which tracks when spills happen and how long they last – shows the releases discharged for 3.1 million hours.

Water companies are taking steps including investing £7.1 billion between 2020 and 2025 to protect the environment. Of this, £3.1 billion is earmarked specifically for storm overflow improvements. Similarly, all storm overflows will be monitored by the end of 2023 (up from 80% currently) and operators must report the frequency and duration of spills to the EA on an annual basis.

To successfully address the CSO issue, however, we need to tackle root cause – which is not as cut and dry as the media makes out. CSOs are an essential part of the sewer network, not a defect of it. They were originally created to prevent drains being overwhelmed in heavy rainfall and backing up into homes, businesses, and roads.

The rise in CSO spills is often attributed to overpopulation and overdevelopment. In other words, too many people and too many houses, generating more wastewater than the system can deal with.

The problem, however, is more closely linked to more frequent and heavier rainfall exceeding the hydraulic capacity of the network. And that’s where our quickest, most cost-effective fixes will spring from.

Stretches of clean water are then targeted and repaired at their source.

Real-world CSO reduction strategies

Impermeable area studies (IAS) assess the catchment of a CSO or pumping station that’s overloaded during rainfall. The survey tracks the route of surface water from roofs and hardstanding to either a foul or storm drain, flagging where the two systems combine and any associated pollution hazards and CSO discharge risks. Output includes detailed data, images, and models showing overall infrastructure capabilities in storm conditions.

When the government’s Storm Overflows Taskforce investigated ways to reduce or eliminate CSO discharges, they found that a complete separation of sewage and rainwater systems would remove the need for storm overflows.

The solution, however, comes at a cost of £350 billion to £600 billion and would bring untold disruption to our towns and cities. An alternative approach – building storage tanks to gather excess water during heavy rainfall – has a price tag of up to £240 billion. Both options considerably ramp up UK carbon emissions.

There is hope, however, in the here and now. With a combined effort between consumers and water companies, it’s possible to claw back capacity within our existing infrastructure and relieve the burden on CSOs. The government consultation document urges public support and behavioural changes to limit rainwater volumes in our sewers. Calls to action include:

Impermeable area studies

SOAF programmes A storm overflow assessment framework (SOAF) is a five-step programme that identifies your worst offending CSOs, determines why they’re discharging, and defines specific improvement measures. Through Event Duration Monitoring, hydraulic assessments, and environmental and aesthetic impact studies, SOAFs provide the data you need to stay compliant, effectively plan spend, and direct funds where they’re needed most.

Responsible construction of hard surfaces (such as patios) that prevent natural water drainage. Permeable surfaces, soakaways, and rain gardens are recommended instead.

Disposing of fats, oils, greases, wet wipes, and nappies in waste receptacles, rather than down sinks and toilets.

Throwing wet wipes in bins, not in toilets, and buying biodegradable options. Wipes make up more than 90% of the material that cause sewer blockages.

For water companies, the focus should be boosting network efficiency and performance, from upper catchment to release.

Expert assessments and planned preventative maintenance are your most efficient starting points.

Using assessments to understand your network An experienced environmental consultant can provide an actionable view of your estate. Using a range of specialist assessments, they’ll highlight infrastructure issues that contribute to costly CSO spills – from misconnected surface water drains to groundwater intrusion. You’ll prioritise failing assets for repair and pinpoint opportunities to maximise throughput – with minimum outlay.

Infiltration surveys Typically conducted when the water table is high, infiltration surveys identify weak spots in your network that allow excess water to enter. Engineers use boreholes and water table measurements to evaluate high flow areas for signs of ingress.

Raising performance with planned preventative maintenance The blue-sky CSO solution is a wholesale separation of foul and surface water systems. Realistically, water companies need workable alternatives that allow for affordable upgrades and make the most of existing assets.

Routine maintenance involves comprehensive checks for wear and tear, fractures, and bottlenecks. To clear the choking effects of debris, specialists use high-pressure water jetting to remove roots, silt, concrete, bricks, and grout build-up. High-quality coils for sustainable energy

he International Energy Agency (IEA) says we must double hydropower capacity by 2050 if we are to meet the Paris climate targets.

‘Net Positive Water’: What is it and why does it matter?

With water risks worsening across the globe, a growing number of companies have expressed a desire to assess their water risks and adopt measures to mitigate them.

M

any companies, such as the tech giants of Silicon Valley, are realising that simply reducing water usage may not be enough, especially in the context of record-breaking droughts across the Western U.S. – and the world.

Recently, there has been increasing interest in the idea of ‘Net Positive Water’ – following the widespread adoption of this concept in relation to carbon emissions.

But what exactly does it mean to be ‘net water positive’, why does it matter, and is it even achievable?

Let’s take a look.

What is net positive water?

As the UN puts it, “Net positive is an approach that means doing more good than bad. It goes beyond ‘doing less harm’ and urges businesses to have a positive impact.”

Simply put, when a commercial or residential development is net water positive, they are putting more water back into the environment than they are extracting from it.

Why does it matter?

Today, 45% of companies report exposure to risks from water insecurity, estimated at over $425 billion.

This number is likely to grow as companies of all shapes and sizes are exposed to these risks through their own operations or through water consumed across their supply chains.

According to the UN Global Compact CEO Mandate, achieving net-positive water impact (NPWI) can help businesses build resiliency for their own operations and the communities and ecosystems in which they operate.

In doing so, these companies can make a demonstrable contribution to the achievement of SDG6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

According to the OECD (the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development), 47% of the world’s population, and many of the world’s primary industries, will be living in geographical areas with strained water supplies by 2030.

In this context, saving water and becoming ‘net positive’ is not

H2O GLOBAL NEWS M A G A Z I N E just the right thing to do, it makes good business sense. It helps to build resilience against the impacts of climate change and increases an organisation’s ability to adapt to its impacts as well as the demands set by its customers.

How to become net positive?

Net positive water is inherently a good idea, but how can companies go about achieving it?

While each local context and case is different, global water and wastewater asset manager Veolia identifies three key steps that companies can take.

1. Reduce consumption Water usage is notoriously inefficient. Huge amounts of water are lost to leaks and faulty equipment and we often use far more water than necessary.

Silicon Valley leads the way Arguably the most influential corporations making a biggest splash about net positive water are the tech giants of Silicon Valley. Last year, Microsoft, Facebook and Google all pledged to replenish more water than they use in their direct operations by 2030, addressing concerns about water-guzzling tech facilities amid record droughts.

It’s a question of reputation, too, said Colin Strong, manager of corporate water stewardship at the World Resource Institute to The Guardian. Businesses working in areas of water scarcity don’t want to be viewed as making the problem worse.

Google consumed 3.4 billion gallons of water in 2019, and says its 20% goal reflects what is needed to return regions with high or extremely high water scarcity to a normal level.

Optimising water use means reducing the amount you consume, either by implementing restrictive measures (such as water efficient appliances), or actively monitoring and limiting your usage.

“By optimising your water usage, you reduce the overall amount that you consume, which is probably your first duty as a good global citizen,” says Alban Delpey, Veolia’s Operational Water Manager.

2. Recycling as much water as possible The second step towards being net positive is recycling some of the water that is used or accessed.

Recycling reduces the overall amount of ‘new’ water that needs to be drawn from the environment, and is an essential building block on the path to net positive.

Some countries, such as Israel and Singapore, already recycle up to 90% of all the water they use instead of returning it to the environment and it’s about time that we all follow suit.

3. Capturing and recapturing “Capturing an extra stream of water into your cycle is a great way to bring your overall water equation onto the positive side,” says Delpey.

“Rainwater harvesting is the most obvious way of capturing water, so if a property has roof space, this is probably the simplest and most generally available technique,” adds Matthew Lee, Veolia’s Regional Energy Manager.

Stormwater can also be captured and re-used, if it’s easily accessible.

“A lot of councils are trying to capture stormwater these days using clever techniques. They are putting facilities in place so that they can store it and have access to it when required,” explains Delpey.

Google, and many other tech companies, use water to cool its data centers’ stacks of computers that store and process search queries, YouTube videos, and other data.

“We are pledging to a water stewardship target to replenish more water than we consume by 2030 and support water security in communities where we operate,” Google Chief Sustainability Officer Kate Brandt wrote in a blog post. “This means Google will replenish 120% of the water we consume, on average, across our offices and data centers.”

Google plans to reach its new target by using less water at its buildings and then helping with conservation in surrounding communities, starting with those where water is especially scarce.

Google’s new measures include collecting stormwater for flushing toilets and funding removal of water-hungry invasive plants.

In Southern California, Google is even helping to install toilet leak detection technology in low-income housing, to cut waste and keep the water cycling through plumbing systems.

And it seems that Google’s pledge to net positive water seems

to be taking shape. Its new Bay View campus in Silicon Valley, which opened last week, has above-ground ponds to gather rainwater and has a building wastewater treatment system to help provide water for cooling, restrooms and irrigation, among other uses.

Google says it is committed to replenishing 120% of the water it consumes in the building by 2030, and all non-potable water demands at the site will be met using recycled water.

Is it all just hype?

While commitments to net positive water by industry giants is promising news, actually achieving these targets isn’t so simple, warns international nature conservation NGO WWF. “Water is a highly complex resource and differs from carbon considerably,” WWF said in a white paper released earlier this year. “With carbon, up is bad, down is good, and location doesn’t matter. With water, it often lives in a goldilocks zone where location and timing matters immensely.”

In other words, because water is so intractable it can be very difficult to accurately measure whether a company is net water positive or not. Furthermore, there seems to be some confusion around what actually constitutes a net water positive commitment.

3. Better understand the return on investment. The risk of water scarcity to a company’s operations is material information that adds value to decision making.

Commitments need to follow through targeted investment into the right areas, and not become a corporate advocacy tool.

4. Avoid projects and programmes – integrate approaches throughout the culture of your organisation to support behaviour change in business practices.

5. Invest in where the best water use efficiencies can be made, and where they will have positive and measurable impact. Focussing on water efficiency does not make you positive; it makes you efficient – that’s all.

6. Understand and recognise your boundaries. Don’t over claim. Water is a complex resource so focus on what you think you can do and deliver on it by understanding the wider water management, social and policy regime you operate in. Local relevance is everything.

7. Use, and learn from how water stewardship is framing the debate and then ask how you connect to the dominant narrative in business and water today – risk and response.

The definition of water use varies from company to company as well. Facebook has taken a very specific approach, counting only the water that is evaporated on their premises as their water consumption. On the other hand, PepsiCo is counting all the water that is used in operations, but only in water-stressed regions.

While the push for water ‘positivity’ is an improvement, there need to be more clear guidelines before solid claims can be made.

To solidify the concept of net positive water and its use in the corporate space, James Dalton, co-ordinator of global water initiatives at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), made the following suggestions: 1. Define the mission, clearly and transparently, and identify partners that can help you. Water management is no longer about infrastructure – it is about governance, accountability, equity, partnership, economics, and productive clean water services.

2. Set your strategic goals: your baselines, timelines, target claims, and comparable indicators and engrain this in your culture so it survives beyond your current CEO. Make it clear who will measure progress, at what business scale, and when – and disclose it.

Protecting Water Resources

Advanced flow meters with remote communications deliver sustainable water solution

P

opulation growth and rapid urbanisation are challenging water utilities to come up with new ways to meet growing demand. Alan Hunt, Product Manager Electromagnetic flowmeters, ABB Measurement & Analytics UK and Eire, explains how remote communications are offering a real time view of flows to help detect losses so that repairs can be prioritised.

With the world facing growing water scarcity exacerbated by climate change, the importance of protecting water supplies and avoiding wastage is increasingly clear.

In a 2019 study by the International Water Association, it was estimated that around 346 billion litres of treated water is lost every day from pipelines worldwide.

There are also financial losses associated with leakages, not just from lost revenue, but every litre of lost water means that another litre that must be processed and pumped, using more dosing agent and energy, and adding to the carbon emissions produced by an industry that is already energy intensive.

For these reasons, it is vital to put measures in place both to detect the location and extent of any losses and explain why these losses are happening.

Measure at night for accurate loss assessment The best data is gained from measurements taken when demand is at its lowest, specifically at night. These low flow rates demand a highly accurate flow meter.

This is best achieved by electromagnetic flowmeters, which can offer an accuracy of as low as +/- 0.2%. Due to both their technical and economic advantages, electromagnetic flowmeters have become the standard flow measurement technology in the water industry over the last few years.

Two-way data gives real time view of flows With rapid, instant access, water managers can use data to remotely monitor the device and network, diagnose problems and control their water networks in near real time. It can also offer the ability to extract performance data from the device itself, allowing parameter changes to be made remotely and ensure it always works as required.

In this way, maintenance teams can pre-empt major failures and prioritise work to use scarce resources and skills more efficiently.

Making use of 4G-LTE and NB-IoT networks, one of the latest offerings is the world’s first electromagnetic flowmeter with bidirectional connectivity, ABB’s AquaMaster4.

By using high speed, low-cost mobile data accessible via an internal SIM card connected to a mobile network, the flowmeter can be deployed virtually anywhere. Even when located hundreds of miles away from the flowmeter installation site, operators can read values from the device remotely, allowing them to manage the device and their operations wherever they are.

The one water concept is internationally recognised, and essentially follows the natural water cycle: from the atmosphere to the earth, to the oceans, and back to the atmosphere.

F

rom a water resource management perspective, people collect volumes of water along the natural cycle, use it, and then send it back into the natural cycle in myriad ways.

Let’s start from the beginning. Where did water from earth come from? One theory is that earth’s water came from asteroids and that water associated with asteroids originated from interstellar water that survived the formation of the sun in our solar system. This theory suggests that a significant amount of water on earth is older than the earth itself!

Water on earth can ‘leak’ into space through a process called atmospheric escape. This is when water in the atmosphere is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen atoms through a process called photolysis, and then the lighter hydrogen atoms can escape into space. However, this is a very small fraction of the total water in the earth’s atmosphere, so we can think of water as a finite resource on a global scale. The total amount of water on earth has remained relevantly constant for billions of years.

Thirty percent of freshwater is found as groundwater leaving only a very small percentage of freshwater that is more readily accessible on the earth’s surface.

The main points of this very brief overview of water on earth are: 1) The earth is not really making any new water nor collecting very much water from interstellar sources 2) Most of the water that we have is not readily usable 3) We must consider usable water as a finite resource.

The ways we use and manage water have significant consequences for water quality. Atmospheric water sources, in the form of precipitation, are often thought of as quantity issues (e.g. floods and droughts).

Stormwater greatly affects water quality in receiving waters through contaminant runoff. It can also cause dilution or concentration effects on pre-existing contaminants in receiving waters.

But this water is not always in a readily usable form. In addition to water we can see in rivers and oceans, large amounts of water are trapped in rocks and minerals. Some scientists speculate that water locked up in minerals found deep under the earth’s surface may be as much as all the water in the oceans combined. These water molecules can be released back into the atmosphere when volcanoes erupt.

For the water we can see (or more easily detect relative to mineral-related water, such as groundwater), 96.5% is salty (oceans, seas, and bays). The remaining 3.5% is freshwater and

Groundwater quality can be greatly influenced by changing water tables (i.e. raising and lowering of water tables due to fluctuating recharge and/or withdrawal) through changes in the subsurface geochemistry. Groundwater aquifers that are associated with surface water can also be exposed to biological contaminants.

We use surface water in multiple ways including recreational, navigational, municipal, and industrial processes. Regardless of the source, the ways in which humans obtain, use, and return water back to the environment has profound effects on water quality in the one-water cycle.

The Water Tower campus includes three laboratories for water-related research.

How can we best protect and, better yet, improve this finite resource?

This is where people come in. We are not simply focusing on water professionals, scientists, and engineers. It takes all people who need clean water to live and survive, which means everyone.

People in Applied Research and Technological Innovation We need scientists, engineers, and innovators to develop, test, and evaluate new technologies and approaches for improving the quality of our water resources.

This includes education and training for water researchers that goes beyond conventional instruction for drinking water and wastewater treatment processes. We need our education systems to broaden coursework to cover subjects such as water reuse, stormwater capture and use, and enhanced aquifer recharge. We also need to focus on establishing systems and technologies for fit-for-purpose end uses of water where water quality is systematically evaluated, managed, and treated for specific purposes such as industrial cooling or agricultural irrigation.

Some states in the US are already moving forward with fit-forpurpose use/reuse approaches, but there is room to do more.

In addition to water researchers, we need more water policy professionals who can help facilitate technology transfer among states and cooperation with technological innovators in other countries. There are currently far too many barriers to technology adoption, especially in the regulated areas of water use such as drinking and wastewater treatment.

People in Water Workforce Training In addition to traditional training on water treatment plant operation and maintenance, today’s water professional will need instruction on new technological innovations that are becoming increasingly mainstream - including automated monitoring approaches and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

The Water Tower offers training for trade-level positions as well as internships and apprenticeships for individuals looking to pursue a career in the water industry.

We also need action on source water issues, such as remote monitoring systems for evaluation of water quality at watershed scales and comprehensive source water protection programmes. This is not just a ‘green’ thing to do. It can save significant amounts of money at the treatment plant.

For instance, the National Academy of Sciences recently released a report that concludes that a twenty-year source water protection program implemented by New York City has been successful in maintaining a filtration waiver for drinking water serving nearly 10 million people with 1 billion gallons of water a day. NYC invested 2.5 billion dollars in their source water protection program. A new filtration treatment system was estimated at 10 billion dollars.

These types of efforts need people in multiple disciplines including ecologists, biologists, chemists and engineers who are educated in areas focusing on water science, but also landscape planners, architects, and stormwater management specialists. Well-trained personnel are also needed in waterrelated laboratories.

Well-trained personnel are also needed in water-related laboratories. Containment analysis is becoming increasingly more complex for chemical (e.g., LC/MS/MS analyses for perand poly-fluorinated alkyl substances) and microbial contaminants (e.g., polymerase chain reaction techniques).

We also need to educate to operate by providing hands-on experience for future water plant professionals and emphasise to young students that water utility operations provide steady, well-paying jobs that are an essential part of our infrastructure.

People in the Community Engaging with our local communities plays a critical role in water quality. Often referred to as ‘invisible infrastructure’, with

Analysing & evaluating service reservoir performance Service reservoir performance analysis requires accurate and reliable monitoring, detailed understanding, and the expertise of a multi-disciplined team.

T

hroughout the life of a reservoir, operators monitor water quality and performance through generated data insights. ATi’s Technical Performance and Data Analyst, Derek Leslie, discusses how the investment in analytical sensor and data resources greatly increases the ability to assess reservoir quality, whilst maximising recovery, performance and profitability.

Reservoir analysis is routinely used to evaluate performance, diagnose characteristics, plan for future development, perform maintenance and management. The fundamental goal of reservoir engineers is to predict the performance of the reservoirs, including the sizeable financial outlays in exploration, drilling, production demand and optimum efficiency to maximise the return on investment.

Traditionally, reservoir performance has been judged on the results from the one-sample-per-week minimum requirements on the outlet of the reservoir, outlined by the DWI. However, it is now widely accepted that one weekly sample is no longer adequate to meet the requirements and challenges of the modern world.

Instead, focused and targeted monitoring is required to understand reservoir performance and problems. The installation of proven, accurate, reliable and continuous monitoring solutions at various points in the reservoir is now crucial in order to give water companies the full picture of water quality.

Although on-site laboratory test sampling may not be possible, obtaining the key indicative samples of water quality is.

Parameters such as chlorine residual, turbidity, pH and conductivity can be measured on-site continually, at intervals less than a minute apart. Utilising industry-leading, tried and tested analytical monitors, such as ATi’s Smart Water Quality and Q-Series ranges of monitoring solutions, provides all of this data to any platform, offering a clearer and more timely picture.

However, in order to generate the best results to analyse performance, a number of questions need to be addressed, including where should the monitors be installed and are regulatory test results indicative of good reservoir content?

H2O GLOBAL NEWS M A G A Z I N E In short, it is wrong to assume that a regulatory sample that passes the test means all the content within the tank is the same, due to dead spots or low-to-no turnover areas in the tanks. There are inlet and outlet mains within a few feet of each other, therefore what goes in can go straight out.

The hydraulic nature of ebb and flow designed reservoirs often results in a loss in disinfection, as supply water is flowing back and forth. There is also the risk that regulatory samples on common inlet and outlet mains can be taken at the wrong time, such as during filling. However, utilising ATi’s industry-leading water quality monitors provides an accurate, real-time picture of water quality and performance, allowing improved optimisation and proactive management.

Quick health checks can be achieved through ‘dip’ samples, however, this requires sufficient access to several parts of the tank, which isn’t always feasible, and also involves additional resources. For accurate daily monitoring of inlet and outlet flows, water quality monitors are crucial. In addition, the quality of the water arriving at site should also be monitored to determine if issues at the site are tank-related or deliveryrelated. Once the diagnosis is made, some monitors can be removed and the key sensors made permanent.

July 2022 Issue 2 Other efficient methods are also available using robotic submersibles, guided to any part and depth of the reservoir, with an ambilocal tube allowing sample water to be pumped to analysers or sample bottles. ATi’s MetriNet multi-parameter smart water quality monitoring solution, along with the SiteBox portable water quality monitoring and control system, are tried and trusted aids for this method of sampling.

24/7 data from ATi’s water quality range can determine if modifications to internal or external pipework design is required, if valve positions need changing, or whether control valves and equipment are necessary. The data can then establish if additional disinfection would be beneficial, whether wider investigation is required or determine if adjustments to filling and emptying the tank is needed.

In summary there is huge unspoken concern for reservoir quality. There is also apprehension that once this previously unknown data is unlocked, a can of worms could be opened.

However, the real issue is, we can’t afford not to know.

I would put more data into the mix.

Operators and businesses want to do better. They want to do their part. We need to enable them to do it. And data is the missing part of that equation. We need to see into the water and know what’s happening so we can take the right action at the right time for water quality management.

I want to see our precious water sources protected and preserved. Not only are they the source of water for our communities, but also a critical part of the ecosystem that we need to protect for generations to come. This isn’t just our work, it’s our duty.

Our resources are limited, water chief among them.

Industrial processes are releasing more containments into the water than every before in human history. Water quality is still a topic of concern because the situation is still worsening. We have not reached the peak of poor water quality yet.

What role does the water industry play in improving water quality?

Industry is largely the creator of poor water quality, and it is very encouraging to see recent efforts to control and curb that effect, above and beyond the governmental enforced standards. But there is still much work to be done, and we cannot stop pushing forward to take better care of our water, and to increase our environmental stewardship.

What steps are you taking to help improve water quality?

Our whole business, our whole mission is around improving water quality. Without data there can be no change. 2S Water and the AquaValid sensor are all about generating the data that operators and companies need to improve water quality, and finding ways to do it that also decrease costs and increase efficiencies.

The main reason for this is that the cost of filtering water remains out of reach for many in developing nations.

Necessity is the mother of invention and I think our next generation of engineers will find ways to make cost effective and implement the use of water-from-air, solar filtration and biocarbons from locally produced wastes..

This is an issue that is often determined by the degree to which a state, country, and municipality can provide funding for adding or upgrading water and wastewater systems. Given the climate change issues that are also affecting these systems, there is more focus on resilience and energy-efficiency.

What are your hopes for the future of our water sources?

My hope is that the US and other industrial countries will work much harder to address climate change starting with energy-intensive industries. If we don’t do this, the state of our planet will only worsen.

Why is water quality still a topic of concern globally?

First, drinking water and wastewater treatment infrastructure is expensive to build and maintain. It is also fair to say that, in regions and countries that have up-todate water/wastewater systems, the energy use is very high. For most municipalities, it is one of the most energy-intensive processes.

Of course, in countries with weak power grids, sanitation and drinking water treatment are either not feasible, or very limited in scope, which leads to both human and ecological health issues.

What steps are you taking to help improve water quality?

Our contribution to this area is two-fold. First, our technology (VIVA MFC) reduces secondary treatment energy use by 85-90%. Also, VIVA generates continuous DC power that can be stored to mitigate energy use in other parts of the plant. VIVA also provides real-time data on the system, which plants can use to optimise energy use.

Most people take water for granted and never think about the process behind the water they drink each day. I hope that more individuals will start to appreciate just how valuable water really is - to think of it as a finite resource and make water-wise decisions.

Water is a valuable resource and flows through everything we do. Therefore, understanding our water quality is vital to understanding safe water supplies, and ultimately, the direction of public health.

When rivers, lakes and reservoirs support an abundance of aquatic life, it’s an indicator that the quality of water is good and healthy to drink.

What role does the water industry play in improving water quality?

Challenges relating to climate insecurity and heightened water stress considerably impact our overall civil infrastructure, especially vulnerable communities.

Globally, about 3 billion people lack access to adequate water quality facilities to safely wash their hands at home. In addition, more than 44 million Americans don’t have access to clean drinking water.

What steps are you taking to help improve water quality?

We developed the Ferguson Urban Green Infrastructure initiative to address urban runoff. Many cities, local governments and water utilities are increasingly struggling to manage stormwater runoff, specifically urban runoff containing pollutants.

If not managed correctly, pollutants such as trash, sediment and excessive nutrients are carried back to our lakes, streams and oceans - compromising the ability to fish, swim, and recreate.

To address this threat, we worked with our stakeholders to bring to market a suite of innovative stormwater management products for both private and public projects. As a result, we curated a portfolio of solutions geared toward managing the impacts of stormwater volume and filtration and collecting pollutants from space-efficient storage, filters and screens, permeable surfaces, and specialty soil mixes and media.

If you could change one thing about the way water quality is managed currently, what would it be?

Operating in a flexible network of collaborators from manufacturers and water technology startup companies to municipalities to various nonprofits and agencies is essential to fostering innovation and overcoming water challenges at scale.

What role do you think technology will play in securing water quality?

Ferguson is constantly seeking out new technologies and taking steps to help improve water quality. Early technologies and strategies for improving water quality included sand filters to remove pathogens (disease-causing organisms) and nutrients that cause algal blooms.

However, research has shown that sand alone is not sufficient to use in many locations. Thus the water industry has developed newer technologies and experimented with different combinations of materials to improve the quality of the effluents leaving these systems. One emerging technology uses sand with other materials to further remove nutrients relate to algal blooms - the “Bold & Gold” (B&G) media.

B&G media uses recycled materials with sand and clay.

Previously used/recycled materials, such as iron filings from iron and tire crumbs and chips from tires are part of the B&G media.

These B&G media are inorganic and thus decay slowly compared to organic media.

B&G media are highly valued for reducing algal blooms, restoring recreational uses, and sustaining the fish supplies and other valued animals and plants living within the water.

It is estimated that only 4-6% of the world’s water is recycled for reuse, and that we could suffer a 40% deficit in water by 2030 unless countries dramatically change their use patterns.

Canadians are fortunate to be surrounded by this most precious resource, however not everyone on the planet has the same level of access.

For those of us who live where there is an abundance of water, there is a tendency to see water as an unlimited resource. By redefining the way water is valued globally, I believe that we can manage it in a more resilient and responsible way.

It is up to the water industry to innovate technologies that will economically improve water quality while also making it a priority to educate the public on the benefits of wastewater recycling.

What steps are you taking to help improve water quality?

LWR’s PLANTTM system is a novel manure processing platform that separates the liquids and solid effluent material, eventually resulting in clean, potable water that can be used for myriad on-farm and off-farm activities.

The initial stage, called the First Wave, pulls out more than 90% of the effluent’s phosphorus that can be later used to

regenerate farm soils as a precisely applied fertiliser or further dried, bagged and sold into the marketplace.

As water continues to be filtered, the second and third products are potable water and a liquid nutrient concentrate.

That concentrate contains sizeable amounts of nutrients including ammonium and potassium. In fact, our clients report a 30% increase in crop growth based on precision applications of dry and liquid fertiliser.

Decentralising wastewater processing on the farm leads to increased farm revenues through biofertiliser sales, increased crop yields, and larger herd sizes, and happier, healthier animals. Furthermore, soils are regenerated, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, nutrient losses are eliminated, and manure handling costs are reduced.

Technology is already playing a major role in the research and development of products that not only biodegrade but also limit their total environmental impact. To protect our environment and water quality, consumer brands are constantly improving the flushability of bathroom wipes to ensure they minimise impact.

Increased urbanisation combined with ageing, inadequate infrastructure and climate change, is causing more flooding and pollution and also impacting future water supplies.

Stormwater runoff is the leading cause of pollutants and bacteria entering into waterways which creates public and ecosystem health concerns that greatly impact community livelihoods and economies.

What role does the water industry play in improving water quality?

The water industry provides standards, methodologies and technologies to help improve water quality.

An example is green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) as a decentralised stormwater management approach that specifically addresses water quality. GSI also provides other benefits such as reducing localised flooding, supporting water supply, reducing heat island effects, absorbing CO2 and restoring natural hydrology and habitats.

GSI design standards emerged from the water sector and have been widely adopted by many cities around the globe.

Moreover, most major cities now require GSI for new or redevelopment projects and GSI retrofits are now being strongly encouraged through utility fee credits, rebates or other financial incentives. This is seen as a means to build resiliency, meet regulatory compliance and delay expensive large “grey” stormwater infrastructure upgrades.

What steps are you taking to help improve water quality?

3Rwater is helping to change the way cities manage stormwater. Our mobile and data management platform called Follow the Drop helps municipal GSI programs build community engagement, collect stormwater metrics, and easily and efficiently track their GSI assets including their maintenance.

Increasing the accessibility and efficiency of GSI greatly improves water quality by increasing the number of GSIs in communities and tracking their status and maintenance to ensure the design intent for pollutant reduction is met.

If you could change one thing about the way water quality is managed currently, what would it be?

One barrier to increased implementation and equity with green stormwater infrastructure is the cost to install. I would like to see more incentives offered at the local or national level to accelerate the adoption of GSI, and grants offered to priority areas in need which often coincide with economically disadvantaged communities.

Similar to the renewable energy industry incentive programs, if either tax credits and/or more utility savings could be offered, we could see accelerated widespread adoption of GSI which would not only significantly benefit water quality since >70% of stormwater runoff comes from private property, but also help to accelerate adaptation to climate change and build resiliency.

What role do you think technology will play in securing water quality?

Climate change and population growth are accelerating the demand for innovative water solutions. Technology will continue to lead the way in providing modern techniques for improving water quality such as advancements in water management processes, materials, communications, monitoring, and data collection and management.

The technology needed is here, what we need is the mindset.

It’s not often we can say the technologies available are ahead of the human capability of providing them, but in the case of the effective use of smart water systems, we need to ‘level up’.

There’s no disputing that the introduction of smart water technologies is shifting from a nice-to-have to a must-have.

Factors such as improvements to system performance, like leakage and pressure management, as well as network operations and water quality monitoring, mean smart water networks have the potential to save utilities by up to $12.5 billion a year across the globe.

The optimisation of these networks informs decision makers about the allocation of capital expenditures, stimulating dramatic savings as a result of the real-time data provided by the smart water network.

It’s not a matter of if, but when, utilities and industrial users plan to capitalise on water savings by implementing these readilyavailable technologies.
