We are led by circumstance because we resist being led by example. The work in this exhibition, reflect my longstanding love of working with lead. Its malleable ability lends itself readily to textures, patinas, and shapes. Much like effects of incidental or intentional conditions. My first experience with the use of lead in artwork, was an encounter with an Untitled piece by Anselm Kiefer at The Des Moines Art Center. The work contained a wide spectrum of colors and shapes from lead, that defined the magnitude of the work. Not only in its weightiness, but in its strikingly, beautiful grimness. Playing with juxtaposition of words, subject-matter, traditional and non-traditional materials, has since become a part of my work. The piece Follow Your Heart is a culmination of a thought and vision I had a couple years ago after the passing of my mother. The patchwork, similar to quilting, is made entirely of metal. The surface reflects a softness, but indeed is not. It serves as an encasement to the heart, and its fragility. Likewise, the circles and squares seem playful and innocent, but are made of a poisonous chemical. The “Only Child is ultimately alone. I think things are all relative, and perception is personal. Cause and effect. Life and death. It all exists exponentially, infinitely, and certainly can lead to circumstances beyond our control. Well-established in the Kansas City art scene for over two decades, Lori Raye Erickson received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1989. In addition to receiving the Charlotte Street Award and an Avenue of the Arts grant in 2009, Erickson has received numerous prestigious awards since 1992. Erickson lives and works in Kansas City. Her artwork can be found in private and corporate collections nationwide.
