Bet You Didn’t

Know

Pop quiz: What is the only Division 1 college athletic program in this past year, not named Duke, to win both its conference football championship and its conference basketball championship? Just one other besides the Blue Devils did it and I am fairly sure not many of you can answer this question without that thing called Google.

Any guesses?

UGA? Alabama? LSU? Texas Tech?

Nope, nope, nope and nope.

Answer: The Kennesaw State University Owls!

Crazy, right? KSU just officially moved up to the Division 1 level in 2025 and certainly would, according to conventional wisdom, experience some growing pains. In fact, the all-knowing Vegas had the Owls pegged to win just 3 or 4 games all football season. But new head coach Jerry Mack, who won Conference Coach of the Year, shocked the world leading the Owls to a 10-4 overall mark including the 7-1 conference record that was good enough to win Conference USA. If this still doesn’t move your meter you may not have realized that KSU went 2-10 in 2024, their first season of FBS play, making this season widely recognized by avid sports fans to be one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in college football history.

Quarterback Amari Odom led the way with his 2.594 passing yards, constantly finding success with leading receiver Gabriel Benyard. Coleman Bennett toted the rock to the tune of 764 yards and linebacker and Co-Conference defensive player of the year Baron Hopson totaled an impressive 138 tackles. In fact, the Owls boasted a league best 16 All-Conference selections!

Meanwhile on the hardwoods early adversity led to some late season success. Star guard Simeon Cottle, who was leading the team in scoring at 20.2 points per game, was indefinitely suspended from all team activities in January following a federal indictment in regards to a point shaving scheme. This was a major government bust throughout the nation and the Owls unfortunately were caught up in it. It alleged that Cottle and a former player took bribes to underperform in games. Combine this with the four-game losing skid around the same time that dropped the Owls to 8-6 and things looked somewhat bleak, at least in terms of winning a championship.

But former Alabama star player and current KSU coach Antoine Pettway kept the ship afloat leading the squad to a 21-13 regular season finish and a 10-10 conference mark. That mediocre Conference USA record made the Owls the six seed in the Conference tournament. And wouldn’t you know it, despite the battle of attrition, they would beat Western Kentucky, Sam Houston and then Louisiana Tech in the Conference championship game to very surprisingly punch their ticket into the Big Dance and matching what the school did on the gridiron a few months earlier.

A football Championship in December followed by a basketball championship in March. Talk about the impossible!

It really was a dream come true in 2025 up in Kennesaw. Certainly the Dawgs and Yellow Jackets get the majority of the publicity around these parts, and for good reason, but what the Owls just pulled off this past year is nothing short of sensational and hopefully the beginning of more good things to come.

Finding Hope and Purpose with Dyslexia: The GRACEPOINT School Story

When a family finds their way to GRACEPOINT School, they often arrive carrying a heavy mix of frustration, fear, and discouragement. Watching a child struggle to read is painful for any parent. For many, the journey has included tearful homework sessions, unanswered questions, and the quiet worry that their child is falling behind.

At GRACEPOINT School, that narrative begins to change from day one. What starts as uncertainty is gradually replaced with hope. Students who once felt defeated begin to discover something remarkable: their dyslexia is not a limitation. It is part of their unique design. At GRACEPOINT, students are taught to see dyslexia as a strength, even a “superpower,” equipping them with resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills that will serve them for life.

One fifth grade student shared that before coming to GRACEPOINT, she didn’t know how to read. “It was hard. And it was embarrassing,” she said. “Every time I tried to read, it was so hard because I didn’t have the tools to break up the words.”

Like many Atlanta-area families, her family had experienced supportive teachers in previous schools, but the structure wasn’t the right fit. In a traditional classroom of 20 or more students, even the most dedicated educators face limitations.

“His teachers were wonderful,” one parent explained, “but in a classroom with so many students, it’s impossible to individualize instruction for every child who is struggling.”

GRACEPOINT offers a different approach, one that is intentionally designed to meet dyslexic students where they are. With small class sizes, specialized instruction, and a deep understanding of how dyslexic students learn best, teachers tailor their methods to each child. The result is not just academic growth, but renewed confidence.

Cindie Briley, GRACEPOINT’s Director of Orton-Gillingham, describes the school’s philosophy this way: “We don’t determine tomorrow’s teaching until we’ve evaluated today’s successes.” That mindset is woven into every school day. Reading groups meet for 70 minutes daily with a 4:1 student-to-teacher ratio, allowing teachers to constantly assess where students are thriving, where they need reinforcement, and ensuring no skills are left behind.

Head of School Liz Powell notes, “Students who once felt ‘less than’ begin to see themselves differently. They discover that they are capable. They learn to advocate for themselves. They begin to take pride in how their minds work. They feel seen and known.”And something else often happens along the way: parents begin to see their own stories more clearly.

In the process of discovering their child’s dyslexia, many GRACEPOINT families uncover their own. During admissions conversations, it is not uncommon for parents to reflect on their own struggles in school–challenges that were never fully understood or addressed.

Dyslexia is highly inheritable, and for many adults, their child’s diagnosis provides long-awaited clarity. It can be both emotional and empowering, connecting generations through shared experience and a deeper understanding of how the brain works. GRACEPOINT recognizes the importance of supporting the whole family, not just the student. Through community, encouragement, and shared stories, families realize they are not alone.

Beyond academics, the school fosters a culture of compassion and service. Students are encouraged to use their gifts to support others, reflecting on the school’s Christ-centered foundation. “It’s an honor to pour God’s love and truth into each student here,” said music teacher Holly Guice. That perspective transforms not only how students view themselves, but also how they engage with the world around them.

One fifth grade student reflected on the change he experienced during his first year at GRACEPOINT: “Halfway through my first year at GRACEPOINT, my parents said they could tell I was progressing and happy. I learned to read. I felt like I accomplished something very big.”

The impact of a GRACEPOINT education extends far beyond the classroom. Students leave equipped with the skills they need to succeed academically, but more importantly, with the confidence to navigate life’s challenges. They understand how they learn, they believe in their abilities, and they carry with them a deep sense of purpose.

“GRACEPOINT grows leaders,” said middle school teacher Kimberly Campbell. “When they leave, they are prepared for the future God has in store for them.”

For many families, discovering GRACEPOINT is a turning point. “We were at such a low point,” another parent shared. “We never expected to pursue private school, but we knew we had to think outside the box because what we were doing wasn’t working.” That willingness to take a different path is what often leads families to GRACEPOINT–and ultimately changes the trajectory of a child’s life.

What makes GRACEPOINT unique is not just its academic model, but its mission. The school is deeply rooted in the belief that every child is created with purpose. Faculty and staff work not only to strengthen reading and learning skills, but also to nurture each student’s sense of identity, confidence, and worth.

For families who once felt overwhelmed and uncertain, GRACEPOINT becomes more than a school–it becomes a place of restoration. And a place where students don’t just learn to read–they learn to thrive. Families seeking answers, support, and a new path forward for their dyslexic learner are invited to learn more about GRACEPOINT School.

GRACEPOINT School serves dyslexic students in 1st through 8th grades. Founded in 2012, the school is accredited by SAIS and the Orton-Gillingham Academy.

Tell us a little about Arrow Exterminators and your presence in Cobb County.

Protecting Cobb County Homes, One Family at a Time

A: Arrow Exterminators has been serving families and businesses across the Southeast since 1964, and we’ve built a strong presence throughout Cobb County and the greater Atlanta area. Today, we’re proud to be the largest family-owned pest control company in the United States, still guided by the same values we were founded on. We’re led by our CEO, Emily Thomas Kendrick, the granddaughter of our founders, Starkey and Imogene Thomas, and that family leadership continues to shape how we treat both our customers and our team members. For us, it’s not just about pest control, it’s about building long-term relationships and being a trusted resource people can count on.

Q: What sets Arrow apart from other pest control companies?

A: It really comes down to our culture. That’s our biggest competitive advantage. As the largest family-owned pest control company in the country, we’ve worked hard to grow without losing that family feel. We’ve built a true family environment, and that impacts everything, from how we train our team members to how we take care of our customers. Every new employee goes through extensive training, not just on technical skills, but on our history, values, and what it means to deliver a great customer experience. When you have a team that genuinely cares, customers feel the difference.

Q: Tell us a little more about Arrow’s family culture?

A: Communication is a big part of it. We’re very open with our team about how the company is doing, from performance to goals, so everyone feels connected and informed. We also make an effort to create a sense of community within our teams, whether that’s through local involvement, team events, or initiatives like our Veterans Committee, which supports both employees and veterans in the communities we serve. It’s those kinds of things that help create a workplace where people feel valued and supported.

Q: What are the most common pest issues homeowners in Cobb County deal with?

A: In this area, we see a lot of termite activity because of the warm, humid climate. Mosquitoes are also a big concern during the warmer months, along with ants, roaches, and rodents. Each season brings something different, so having a year-round protection plan really helps homeowners stay ahead of problems before they get out of hand.

Q: What advice would you give homeowners to help prevent pest problems?

A: A few simple things can make a big difference. Keep food sealed and areas clean, fix moisture issues like leaks or standing water, and seal up small entry points around the home. Regular inspections are also key, especially for termites, because catching an issue early can save a lot of stress and expense later.

Q: How important is termite protection in this area?

A: It’s very important. Georgia is one of the highest-risk states for termite activity, and Cobb County is no exception. Termites can cause significant structural damage before you even realize they’re there, which is why we recommend regular inspections and a solid protection plan.

Q: Arrow is known for being involved in the community. Can you share some ways you give back locally?

A: Community involvement is one of our core values. Across the Atlanta area, we support a wide range of organizations, including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory’s Winship Cancer Center, the Shepherd Center, Special Olym-

pics, and many others. On a more local level here in Cobb County, we’re proud to support Mount Bethel Christian Academy and be involved with events like the Smyrna Jonquil Festival. We also stay engaged with local schools, youth sports, and community programs. Our team members live and work here, so it’s important to us to give back in meaningful ways.

Q: Why is it important for a local business to stay involved in the community?

A: Because this is more than just where we work, it’s where we live. Being involved helps us stay connected to the people we serve and strengthens the community as a whole. It’s something we take seriously, and it’s a big part of who we are as a company.

Q: What should someone look for when choosing a pest control provider?

A: Look for a company with a strong reputation, experienced technicians, and a commitment to customer service. You want someone who will take the time to explain things and customize a plan for your home, not just offer a one-size-fits-all solution.

Q: How can readers get in touch with Arrow Exterminators?

A: The easiest way is to visit our website or contact your local Arrow Exterminators office. We’re always happy to answer questions, provide inspections, and help homeowners find the right solution for their needs.

Did You Know?

l Georgia is one of the highest-risk states in the country for termite activity, making regular inspections especially important for homeowners.

l Mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap’s worth of standing water.

l Ants are one of the most common household pests in Cobb County, especially during warmer months.

l Rodents often look for shelter indoors as temperatures drop, making fall and winter key times for prevention.

l Many pest issues start outside the home, which is why ongoing protection plans are more effective than one-time treatments.

Simple Tips to Help Protect Your Home

Eliminate standing water around your home to reduce mosquito activity. Seal small cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundations. Keep food stored in airtight containers and clean up crumbs quickly. Trim back shrubs and tree branches that touch your home. Schedule regular inspections, especially for termites, to catch issues early.

If you’ve ever thought, “I know I need to do something— but I don’t know where to start,” you are not alone.

For many women in their 40s and 50s, the rules seem to change overnight. Workouts that used to “work” no longer do. Energy feels inconsistent, joints may feel stiff or achy and weight shifts in ways that don’t quite make sense. This is exactly why, at Wholebody Systems Smyrna, we don’t start with a workout, we start with understanding.

Join us as Tara steps into the role of client. Not a polished highlight reel, but a real experience. The goal is simple: to show you what it actually looks like to begin.

Understanding Step One: A Functional Assessment That Meets You Where You Are

Before we start working on anything, we look at how your body is currently functioning. A functional assessment is not about pushing limits—it’s about observing patterns. How you move. Where you compensate. Where strength is lacking, and where stability may need support.

For women navigating perimenopause, this step is especially important. Hormonal shifts can influence muscle mass, connective tissue integrity, and recovery. What used to feel “easy” may now feel different and that’s not something to push through blindly. We use this information to build a program that is both effective and appropriate.

Tara’s experience: I am at the point where I have tried everything that I have aways been successful with however nothing is working. Actually, I feel like I am going backwards....it’s time for a new approach.

Understanding Step Two: Looking Beneath the Surface with Echolight Diagnostics

Bone health is one of the most overlooked—and most important—pieces of this stage of life. Many women are told to “wait and see” until bone loss becomes a problem. We want to take a different approach.

That’s why we include a nutrition analysis as part of the process.

· Current eating patterns

· Protein intake (critical for muscle and bone support)

· Overall fueling and recovery

· Practical adjustments that fit real life

· Spectrophotometry to measure mineral deficiencies

· In depth BMI – including water composition and visceral fat numbers

This is not about dieting. It’s about supporting your body so it can respond to the work you’re doing. For perimenopausal women, this can be a turning point—shifting from frustration to understanding. For our postmenopausal clients, especially those managing osteoporosis, nutrition becomes a key part of treatment and long-term resilience.

What We’ve Learned So Far

Tara completed all of her assessments in April and they have already given us a meaningful start point. Her Echolight results show the early stages of osteopenia in the spine, while her hips remain in a healthy range. This is not uncommon and it’s exactly why early insight matters. It gives us the opportunity to be proactive, applying the right kind of loading strategies now to help protect and potentially improve bone health over time.

From a movement and strength perspective, Tara presents as someone who has taken care of herself. There is a solid foundation of general conditioning and cardiovascular fitness, which is a great asset. At the same time, her strength metrics suggest that she hasn’t spent much time in structured resistance training—particularly at the levels needed to stimulate muscle and bone adaptation. We also see the lasting benefits of her background in dance and cheerleading. She has maintained impressive flexibility and body awareness. However, that flexibility can sometimes mask underlying imbalances. In Tara’s case, areas like the posterior chain and adductors are comparatively underactive, meaning they are not contributing as effectively as they should during movement.

Using Echolight diagnostics, we can assess bone quality in a way that is safe, radiation-free, and informative. This gives us a clearer picture of where things stand now—not years from now when intervention becomes more urgent.

This is valuable for two groups of women: Those in perimenopause who want to be proactive and preserve bone density and those who have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis and are looking for a safe, effective way to support and improve bone health. Bone responds to load but only when that load is applied correctly and safely. That’s where our programming, including BioDensity, becomes a powerful tool.

Tara’s experience: This has been a first for me, for once it wasn’t ONLY about the number on the scale. Measuring my muscle, testing my bone density...honestly, I felt like I was in unfamiliar territory until they asked me this question, “do you want to be fit or frail?”

Understanding Step Three: Nutrition That Supports, Not Restricts Nutrition during this phase of life often becomes confusing. What worked in your 30s may now leave you feeling depleted. Undereating, over-restricting, or chasing trends can work against your goals especially when it comes to maintaining muscle, supporting bone health, and managing energy.

None of this is a problem—it’s simply information. It’s exactly the kind of information that allows us to build a program that is targeted, efficient, and safe.

Why This Approach Works?

Whether you are just beginning to notice changes in your body or you’ve already been diagnosed with osteoporosis, the common thread is this:

You need a plan that respects where you are—and moves you forward safely. At Wholebody Systems, we specialize in high-intensity, low-impact strength training, bone-focused loading strategies, joint-friendly, functional movement, and efficient sessions designed for real life.

For women in perimenopause, this approach helps preserve muscle, support metabolism, protect bone, and reduce the risk of injury as the body changes. For those further along—postmenopausal or managing osteoporosis—it becomes a form of treatment. A way to rebuild strength, improve bone health, and regain confidence in what your body can do.

What Tara is beginning and what you’ll see unfold in the coming months—is not a quick fix, it’s a process. We invite you to follow along or start your own journey with us. Wholebody Systems Smyrna would like to offer you a reward.

Complete your Assessments in May and get your first month’s training 50% off. Just mention ‘Tara’s Journey’ when you reach out to Kim. kim@wholebodysystems.com or 678-640-4145.
