The ABC’s of jewelry appraisals
WHAT IS AN APPRAISAL? An appraisal is a document which includes a description of the item and assigns a value to the piece based on several analyzable, measurable, & visible specifications. These specifications include but are not limited to, materials making up the piece, markings, metal weight and gem size. This document must be prepared by a qualified individual; always look for a Graduate Gemologist who can perform the appraisals on-site.
WHAT SHOULD BE APPRAISED? While all jewelry can hold a degree of irreplaceable sentimental value, your homeowner’s insurance may be adequate to cover replacing lower cost items which may be lost or damaged due to home theft or fire. You will want to carefully review your policy to ensure that your standard coverage includes something that may be lost or possibly stolen while traveling or when you’re out of the home. It is prudent to have separate insurance for higher cost items which may not be fully covered on a standard homeowner’s policy.

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN
AN APPRAISAL? For our purposes here, we are discussing an appraisal for the replacement value of the item. This will allow you to replace your jewelry with something that is similar in size, design, and value should your insured piece get lost, stolen, or damaged. Your appraisal should be very detailed. Metals and stones should be identified by quality, as well as the size of stones. Any visible inclusions or markings should be notated, exceptional craftsmanship or other unique aspects such as brand specifications of the item will be included, and a photograph is also an important part of the appraisal.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD APPRAISALS BE UPDATED?
While a modest fluctuation can be seen with diamonds and other gems, precious metals are where the fluctuations become more obvious. If you have been married for 20 years and have not updated your 18-karat gold wedding ring appraisal, it will be grossly undervalued. Gold was $432 per ounce in 2000 and is currently over $1500 per ounce! Typically, a new appraisal is recommended every 2 to 3 years to remain current.
HOW MUCH SHOULD AN APPRAISAL COST?
There is no standard rate for appraisals; typically, they cost between $50-$100 depending on the amount of time it takes to evaluate the piece. Steer clear of appraisers who charge based on value of the item and always request a quote before committing to having your jewelry appraised.

Upon inspection of your jewelry for appraisal, a qualified jeweler or gemologist may find issues with your jewelry that may have otherwise gone unrecognized (i.e. loose or broken stones, cracked shanks or mountings, and missing or worn prongs.) You might think winter is bad for your skin, but the spring months may actually be worse. The first glimpse of pasty skin, blue veins, callused feet, and unexpected hairs can make you feel as though your skin is completely unprepared for shorts and flip flops. The change of season can prompt a whole new set of issues. It may be instantly hot and humid, so on top of all your dry skin, you’re suddenly having oiliness and acne, or even a sudden allergy that comes with the welcoming of spring.
YOUR BODY FEELS LIKE AN ALLIGATOR BAG
The two most important things to address with dry skin on your body is moisturizing and exfoliating. Start with a warm shower rubdown using a shea butter body wash on a clean washcloth. If you shave your legs, you can skip this exfoliation since shaving is a form of dead skin removal. Although it’s tempting to follow this body exfoliation with the thickest cream you own, it’s perhaps an unwise move because in warm weather, thicker creams can leave the skin feeling sticky and dripping with perspiration. Instead, you should apply a soothing, hydrating cream. Otherwise, any light lotion that contains glycolic, alpha hydroxy, or fruit acid will quickly restore dead-looking skin to vibrant and hydrated.
YOUR LEG HAIRS FEEL PRICKLY RIGHT AFTER SHAVING
The 70 percent of women who are faithful razor users can shave an extra half millimeter or so of hair just by using a good shaving gel or cream. Follow it with a moisturizer that contains a soy extract to slow down hair regrowth.
YOUR FOOT CALLUSES COULD START A FIRE
Looking for an easy at home treatment for calluses? Start by soaking your feet in warm to hot water so the skin is soft and pliable, then buff the feet with a foot file, a pumice stone, or a wash cloth with a cleanser. Follow with a cream containing urea which helps to eat away dead skin cells and makes the skin soft and smooth.
YOUR KNEES AND ELBOWS HAVE FADED TO GRAY
You can tell your skin is in need of some TLC when your knees and elbows begin to resemble a prune and take on a whitish, gray color. The best fix is a potent daily moisturizing cream or even Vaseline on the elbows and knees before bed. Be sure to massage the product thoroughly for 1-2 minutes and cover the areas up so it doesn’t wipe off in bed. Picking or scratching at the affected areas can exacerbate the ashiness.

Dealing with acne on the face is one thing, but to deal with acne in unexpected places like the back and rear is just not cool. And once the breakouts are gone, you still have to deal with the dark marks and scarring that it leaves behind. The skin on your back is thicker and therefore has fewer blood vessels which means a slower healing process for scarring to fade. Try using a silicon brush with an alpha hydroxyl acid cleanser to help lighten up the pigmentation. You might also try a medicated acne wash with benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment or gel to sleep in. Make sure you allow this treatment to dry to avoid bleaching your bed sheets.
