Karen launched her photography career after completing four years at Kennesaw State University with a focus on studio art.

She gained national attention when one of her photos was featured on Good Morning America in 2008. Her career continued to blossom with features in major publications such as People Magazine, as well as local publicity from Voyage Atlanta, Our Town Magazine, and Atlanta Magazine. They quickly became Insta famous on Instagram when their mom Karen, a photographer in the Smyrna area started their account. They have modeled for Bark, Zulily, Target, and various boutique pet shops. Sailor was featured in People Magazine for his Insta-cuteness. Sailor is a loving and sensitive little guy who loves playing, eating, chasing lizards , and posing for the camera. Salty is the wild child full of energy and always stealing socks and getting into everything. Mom Karen says, “They bring so much joy to our lives with their unconditional love.” These handsome guys are supporters of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue and most recently adopted a koala bear in Australia named Jimmy. Refreshing Your Home for Spring

With the days growing longer and the fresh scent of spring in the air, we are all starting to look forward to enjoying some warmer weather and sunshine. Putting the dark and cold wintery days behind us is always uplifting.

If you’re looking to give your interior a spring makeover, as well, here are some quick and easy ways to refresh your home for spring.

Introduce Color & Pattern

Adding just a few touches of color can instantly lighten and brighten your space. A few colorful accent pieces placed in a room, a bright piece of art or a bold cushion will add fun splashes of color and spring vibrancy to your home. You don’t have to stop with color but can introduce some pattern to your home, too! Mixing and matching different textures, colors and patterns is a great way to provide interest and liven up any room.

There’s no need to go overboard with floral prints (although they do add an instant spring factor to your home), botanical patterns and bold prints will also create a fresh and lively feel.

Bring the Outside In There’s nothing that says spring quite like the smell of fresh flowers. By adding plants and greenery to the inside of your home you instantly create a connection to the outside. Adding plants to a room is a trick that interior designers use to make a space feel more alive. Plants are also great for introducing a softer texture and additional color.

Declutter and Clean It may be a bit of a cliché to spring clean, but there’s nothing quite like a tidy and clean home. Clean your windows to let light in, touch up any chipped paint and give the areas of your home that you tend to neglect a thorough clean. Mop your floors, clean your carpets and most of all declutter. Spring is all about freshness, so think about adding more storage to keep clutter at bay. If you space is limited, try to use multi-purpose furniture where you can hide unsightly items.

WHAT IS AN APPRAISAL? An appraisal is a document which includes a description of the item and assigns a value to the piece based on several analyzable, measurable, & visible specifications. These specifications include but are not limited to, materials making up the piece, markings, metal weight and gem size. This document must be prepared by a qualified individual; always look for a Graduate Gemologist who can perform the appraisals on-site.

WHAT SHOULD BE APPRAISED? While all jewelry can hold a degree of irreplaceable sentimental value, your homeowner’s insurance may be adequate to cover replacing lower cost items which may be lost or damaged due to home theft or fire. You will want to carefully review your policy to ensure that your standard coverage includes something that may be lost or possibly stolen while traveling or when you’re out of the home. It is prudent to have separate insurance for higher cost items which may not be fully covered on a standard homeowner’s policy.

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN AN APPRAISAL? For our purposes here, we are discussing an appraisal for the replacement value of the item. This will allow you to replace your jewelry with something that is similar in size, design, and value should your insured piece get lost, stolen, or damaged. Your appraisal should be very detailed. Metals and stones should be identified by quality, as well as the size of stones.

Any visible inclusions or markings should be notated, exceptional craftsmanship or other unique aspects such as brand specifications of the item will be included, and a photograph is also an important part of the appraisal.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD APPRAISALS BE UPDATED? While a modest fluctuation can be seen with diamonds and other gems, precious metals are where the fluctuations become more obvious. If you have been married for 20 years and have not updated your 18-karat gold wedding ring appraisal, it will be grossly undervalued. Gold was $432 per ounce in 2000 and is currently over $1500 per ounce! Typically, a new appraisal is recommended every 2 to 3 years to remain current.

HOW MUCH SHOULD AN APPRAISAL COST? There is no standard rate for appraisals; typically, they cost between $50-$100 depending on the amount of time it takes to evaluate the piece. Steer clear of appraisers who charge based on value of the item and always request a quote before committing to having your jewelry appraised.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF HAVING YOUR JEWELRY APPRAISED. Upon inspection of your jewelry for appraisal, a qualified jeweler or gemologist may find issues with your jewelry that may have otherwise gone unrecognized (i.e. loose or broken stones, cracked shanks or mountings, and missing or worn prongs.) This could allow you to avoid future complications or claims on your policy.

7 WAYS TO BE KIND TO YOUR SKIN THIS SPRING

You might think winter is bad for your skin, but the spring months may actually be worse. The first glimpse of pasty skin, blue veins, callused feet, and unexpected hairs can make you feel as though your skin is completely unprepared for shorts and flip flops. The change of season can prompt a whole new set of issues. It may be instantly hot and humid, so on top of all your dry skin, you’re suddenly having oiliness and acne, or even a sudden allergy that comes with the welcoming of spring.

YOUR BODY FEELS LIKE AN ALLIGATOR BAG The two most important things to address with dry skin on your body is moisturizing and exfoliating. Start with a warm shower rubdown using a shea butter body wash on a clean washcloth. If you shave your legs, you can skip this exfoliation since shaving is a form of dead skin removal.

Although it’s tempting to follow this body exfoliation with the thickest cream you own, it’s perhaps an unwise move because in warm weather, thicker creams can leave the skin feeling sticky and dripping with perspiration. Instead, you should apply a soothing, hydrating cream. Otherwise, any light lotion that contains glycolic, alpha hydroxy, or fruit acid will quickly restore dead-looking skin to vibrant and hydrated.

YOUR LEG HAIRS FEEL PRICKLY RIGHT AFTER SHAVING The 70 percent of women who are faithful razor users can shave an extra half millimeter or so of hair just by using a good shaving gel or cream. Follow it with a moisturizer that contains a soy extract to slow down hair regrowth.

YOUR FOOT CALLUSES COULD START A FIRE Looking for an easy at home treatment for calluses? Start by soaking your feet in warm to hot water so the skin is soft and pliable, then buff the feet with a foot file, a pumice stone, or a wash cloth with a cleanser.

Follow with a cream containing urea which helps to eat away dead skin cells and makes the skin soft and smooth.

YOUR KNEES AND ELBOWS HAVE FADED TO GRAY You can tell your skin is in need of some TLC when your knees and elbows begin to resemble a prune and take on a whitish, gray color.

The best fix is a potent daily moisturizing cream or even Vaseline on the elbows and knees before bed. Be sure to massage the product thoroughly for 1-2 minutes and cover the areas up so it doesn’t wipe off in bed. Picking or scratching at the affected areas can exacerbate the ashiness.

“YOU NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION” Sound familiar? Of course, it does.

Have you ever thought about how other people see you? Do you think that “they” see you as you see yourself? AND depending on how “they” know you (personally or professionally) this could be a very different description and opinion.

This past month I spoke to two very different audiences. I spoke about self-esteem, branding and social media at “The Me You See” youth conference, to help bring awareness and prevention to the horrible issue of human trafficking. I also spoke to an audience of beauty professionals about image, branding and social media. The topic was “Your Image is Your Business”. Now here is the craziest part, although the topics and audience were vastly different, the content and conversation were similar as it all came down to your visual brand and your social media.

We live in a day and time that people often see us before they meet us.

THINK ABOUT IT: (Personally) If someone recommended a babysitter to you or perhaps your child wanted to go over to a new friend’s house, what is the first thing you would do? Google their name? Then formulate an opinion of them by their social media content.

Yep, of course you would, why?... because you can and because you have this resource in the palm of your hand.

(Professionally) Say you are the hiring manager and you have a list of employees up for the next big promotion. You consider their contributions to the company and you have it narrowed down to three amazing candidates. Let’s also say you are also social media “friends” with them. You see their after -work (personal) activities. In your opinion, overall everything seems fine, but you do see a pattern on one account of negative talk or perhaps you see posts with lots of late nights out on the town...not really your business, but would this sway your professional opinion? Of course, it would...

Friends, in this day of social media your visual brand has never been more important, and first impressions have never been more influential. People are losing jobs, promotions, scholarships and more because of things that they post on their social media accounts.

starting mixes will work; just don’t use soil straight out of your yard, which could contain weed seeds and viruses.

3. Use a light hand. There might be 50 sunflower seeds in a packet, but you’re only going to plant three seeds in each pot, eventually thinning to just the strongest one.

Did you ever wonder why some tomatoes at the grocery store are cherry-sized and red or yellow, and some are shaped like plums, and some are huge? It’s because there are thousands of different varieties of tomatoes, every one of them grown from seeds saved by some gardener, somewhere, because that tomato was better than any other … in that particular garden.

There are also lots of varieties of peppers, eggplant, basil, beans, watermelon and every other fruiting plant -- but to access the range of possibilities, you have to grow your vegetables from seed. While it requires planning and learning some tricks of the trade, the payoff is that you can grow things that nobody else in your neighborhood may ever have tried before.

What are those “tricks”?

1. Start with fresh seeds. Seeds are tiny living things that won’t last forever. You can help them stay viable longer by storing leftovers in a dry, cool place.

2. Use good potting mix and clean containers. At Our Giving Garden, our favorite is coconut coir mixed with Happy Frog growing mix. But many commercial seed

5. Give them LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT. You’re trying to replace sunlight; your kitchen is definitely not bright enough. At a minimum, your seeds need to be ON the windowsill of the window that gets the most direct light every day. If you see the seedlings leaning toward the window, either try to get them closer or turn them around every few days, so both sides of the plant get light.

You should start tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and most flower seeds now. Don’t start beans, cucumbers, squash, peas, carrots or most greens indoors. Instead, buy those seeds, then follow the package instructions for planting them right in the ground.

(Again, remember the rules: use fresh seed, a light hand, and improve our typical clay soil by adding lots of compost.)

1/3 cup chicken stock 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/3 cup honey 2 tablespoons rice vinegar 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger 1/2 teaspoon hoisin sauce (optional) 1/2 tablespoon lime juice 2 cloves garlic 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch

In a small pot whisk soy sauce, water, and cornstarch together until smooth.

Add vinegar, pineapple, garlic and ginger.

Heat over medium-high heat until warm and then whisk in honey until dissolved.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium and whisk constantly until desired thickness is reached. Do not leave unattended as it thickens quickly once it gets boiling and will rapidly burn. Taste and adjust as desired. If too thick, thin with additional water to desired consistency.

Sauce will thicken as it stands. If too thick, simply whisk in a few tablespoons of warm water at a time until desired consistency is reached.

1. Use a pen or a pencil to sketch the outlines of your carrot on the canvas. You do not need to worry about the lines being visible, because you are going to cover them up. So even if you make a mistake, it is all right.

Carrots are not perfect triangles in real life, so you do not need to worry about making a perfect triangle.

2. Once you have sketched the shape of the carrot on the canvas, you are ready to proceed to the main step in this project. Simply glue on all of the buttons to fill

the carrot shape in, making sure to cover the guidelines you drew. While filling in the outline of the carrot shape, make sure that it is full as possible without gaps or open spaces. Different shades of orange and shapes of button will give your artwork an interesting texture.

3. Once you have completed the steps with the buttons, take your green ribbon and cut it into a number of small pieces which are either identical in length, or relatively close in length. Create loops out of each of these pieces of ribbon, and hot glue them onto the canvas at the top of the carrot. You do not need to tie any knots; just use the glue to create the loops as you attach them to the canvas directly.

We recently took our boys on their first flight. I know we’re a bit late to the game, but please don’t judge because their mom may or may not be afraid of flying so we drive everywhere we possibly can. In the spirit of ‘go big or go home’ we decided that a five-hour cross-country jaunt to Los Angeles was the perfect choice for their first time flying. Here are some things that worked for us that may also work for your family.

Travel Tips for Flying with Children

PACK EACH KID A BACKPACK – We allowed the kids one backpack each for the flight. To help minimize the chances of anything being left on the plane or lost along the way we allowed them each to bring a movie, noise-cancelling headphones, boogie boards and a water wow (more on these in a minute), a book, a toy of their choosing (which is always a train for my youngest and the Nintendo Switch for my oldest), and two stuffed animals. They put more thought into which two stuffed animals got to make the trip than The Bachelor does with his final rose.

In order to avoid this same experience on the plane – with a lot less room to maneuver – we had the boys bring their Boogie Boards and I surprised them with a Water Wow. If you aren’t familiar with these magical travel tools to keep your kids entertained without a mess, a Boogie Board is an LCD drawing pad. It comes with a pen (and a nice built-in holder for the pen) and you can also purchase other tools such as stamps, brushes, etc. to use with the device.

Water Wows come with a refillable water pen – also with its own built-in storage – that you use to ‘color’ pictures. It’s reusable and mess-free.

LET THEM WATCH AS MANY MOVIES AS THEY WANT. Whether it’s in-flight movies on built-in screens or movies on an iPad let them watch as many movies as the would like.

Some airlines even offer new releases on flights. My youngest and I watched Frozen 2 on our flight to L.A.

SNACKS. As I have shared before, my boys eat a lot, so I always have snacks of some sort on hand. Flights are no exception. Depending on the airline, snacks may or may not be included and a small package of almonds or crackers isn’t going to cut it for a hungry kid. I also don’t want to be reliant on the flight attendant to bring the boys something to eat every time they’re starving.

These all helped to make our boys’ first flight an absolute blast for them and a win for mom and dad. I hope you find these helpful for your next adventure!

Spring is around the corner and we at K-9 Coach are thrilled! Fresh air, blooming trees and flowers, as well as perfect outdoor weather, make us and our canine friends very happy. For all that is wonderful about springtime, it is also very busy and potentially very dangerous for your beloved pups!f

Each year, we remind people about COMMON SPRINGTIME HAZARDS and some precautionary steps that you can take to help keep your furry friends safe this spring.

Spring often means having friends and family over for cook-outs

Landscaping Products such as colored mulch, mulch made from recycled rubber, chemicals used on lawns and gardens, such as fertilizer and plant food, etc… can be deadly if ingested. Make sure to read the labels, look for safe alternatives and always follow the manufacturer direction in terms of storage and post-application contact with pets.

Cleaning Supplies are in high demand during the spring. Make sure to keep cleaners and solvents safely out of the reach of dogs (and small humans too, of course) and mop up any spills before a curious puppy puts their inquiring nose in it!

During spring cleaning, many of us will empty the medicine cab-

inets and discard expired medications. Human Medications, such as pain killers, cold medicines, anti-cancer drugs, anti-depressants, vitamins and diet pills can all be extremely toxic to animals. Keep all medicine containers away from pets who could chew through them and be vigilant about finding and disposing of any dropped pills. Most pharmacies will have a program for proper disposal of unused medications.

This winter has been fairly mild and so insects will probably be pretty bad this year! Insect Control Products including those in

Laundry Items such as detergents and fabric softener sheets may have ulcerous and even fatal consequences for your dog. Highly concentrated laundry detergent packets are even more dangerous.

Make sure to keep these out of reach for your inquisitive puppy.

If you are like me, you plant flowers both in and outside during springtime. Poisonous Household Plants include Autumn Crocus, Azalea, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, Lilies, Oleander, Dieffenbachia, Daffodils, Lily of the Valley, Sago Palm, Tulips, and Hyacinths among others. If you have a question about a specific plant, ask your veterinarian.

Traps and Poisons must be treated with extreme caution. Just remind yourself of why they exist! Even if you do not use traps and poisons, remember that your neighbors might. Dogs and cats can be poisoned if they eat a rodent who has been killed by poison (called secondary poisoning).

Spring is also an ideal time to inspect and replace worn out Dog Gear & Toys. Collars and leashes wear out and can break when Fido pulls on that afternoon walk! Stuffed toys and beds get holes and, let’s face it, eating white polyfill stuffing is irresistible! Rubber toys such as Kongs, tennis balls, etc... can degrade and break apart over time. So, make sure to inspect and replace.

Other than warn you about their dangers, there’s not much K-9 Coach can do about cleaning supplies or landscape products! BUT, we can do something about collars, leashes, toys, etc… Every March, pet companies worldwide launch their new pet products. We research and test these products and bring them to you, our clients. And, since it is better to spend a few dollars replacing worn-out puppy gear, than thousands in surgery fees from intestinal blockages or broken bones from getting loose and running in front of a car, we do our own spring cleaning and hold our Annual Spring Clearance Sale.
