Alternative Flower Choices to Roses for Valentine’s Day When we think of Valentine’s Day flowers, our thoughts will usually go to a bouquet of red roses. Although it is true that red roses are the ultimate symbol of love, it is generally believed that they should be reserved as a gift between two people who are passionately in love.

This is not to say that one can’t send or give someone red roses, but you may want to consider the variety of other flowers that also have the ability to portray romance. By incorporating different colors and textures, you can put together a bouquet for your special someone that is unique and stands out from the rest.

Here is a list of flowers that you can use that will help you express your feelings this Valentine’s Day.

Orchids

When given as a gift, this flower often brings feelings of love, wisdom, beauty, seduction and refinement. Tulips

My recommendation is to check the date. All products have an expiration date.

These 5 words, spoken by Democratic presidential candidate, Elizabeth Warren, have stirred up so much conversation in the past few weeks. She said that she doesn’t wash her face, but instead she uses “Ponds Moisturizer every morning and every night”. Every news organization and social media outlet went wild!!!! I was asked to be a guest on HLN to speak about it as a result of all of the hoopla.

uses aftershave. He made a statement, (my interpretation) “Isn’t aftershave like moisturizer”?

Aftershave is NOT a replacement for moisturizer. Please use moisturizer.

The fact of the matter is her skin does look fantastic. AND... in my personal opinion, I feel sure she runs a wet cloth over her face when she is in the shower. My interpretation is that she does not use a traditional soap or cleanser. In any case, this had “Cosmopolitan” ask the question to some of our other candidates.

Regardless of how you feel about politics, this information was very interesting. Wouldn’t you say? Notice the products were a mix of both drugstore brands and high end. Also, a good skincare routine is not just for women. It is important for everyone.

When anyone asks me about makeup, I always ask about their skincare routine first. Why? Well, if your skincare and grooming are not on point, make-up will not help. To be honest, you need much less make-up if your skin and grooming are a priority.

Skincare matters...even in the White House it seems.

North Cobb Christian School shines at helping students discover their gifts

Synclair Savage is a senior. She’s also a first-chair flute player, star student, reigning Homecoming Queen, and the state track-and-field record-holder for the 100-meter, 200-meter and long jump. But what is most surprising about Synclair is that, at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw where she attends, she’s actually not an anomaly. Yes, she is absolutely amazing, but at NCCS, it’s not unusual for students to shine in multiple disciplines like Synclair does -- for the track star to excel at orchestra, or for the quarterback to lug his cello around the halls. Guiding students to discover and develop multiple gifts is what sets NCCS apart in the realm of education -- and their students thrive as a result.

“I think what makes NCCS so special is how the teachers and coaches really encourage you to develop your talents and explore lots of interests,” says Synclair. “My schedule is set up so I have time for track, time for band, time for my classes, and time to be in the [spring] musical. Everyone here works with you to balance your schedule, so you can achieve everything you want to achieve.”

CREATIVE FOUNDATIONS Synclair, who first began running track in 5th grade at NCCS, notes that this school-wide commitment to individualized education begins in NCCS’s Lower and Middle School. Exploration in the arts starts with the 3-year-old preschool classes, and throughout elementary school, students have the opportunity to participate in praise team, chorus, an annual play, and private music lessons on campus. Fourth-grade students also rotate through unique “music-mesters” -- 12-week immersions in band, orchestra and music. In addition to robust arts programs, middle school students explore outside-the-box interests during in-school clubs every Friday like drone flying, animation, and cooking. Even the school’s after-school program, Flipside, offers year-round courses after the bell rings, ranging from origami to expressive dance.

“Developing students’ ‘unique genius’ -- helping them discover their unique identity and purpose -- is a cornerstone of what we do at NCCS,” affirms Craig Konchak, NCCS Middle School Principal. “Our students are given countless opportunities to find what makes them tick.”

ACADEMY EXPLORATIONS Synclair Savage, NCCS senior, shines with diverse talents and accolades.

Perhaps the most distinctive element of this unique culture at NCCS is the Academies program. The NCCS Academies allow high school students to select one of five tracks, equivalent to magnet programs, building an academic and real-world foundation in their areas of interest.

“Participating in the NCCS Academies is like majoring in an area,” explains Upper School Principal Megan Strange.

“Students take electives that funnel them down a pathway of interests, gifts and skills.”

Five Academy tracks are available to students: The STEM Academy, The Academy of the Arts; The Academy of Business; The Academy of Counseling, Ministry and Education; and The Academy of Exercise and Sports Science. Students in an Academy take courses, participate in internships, and experience hands-on opportunities in their area of study.

“At NCCS, we believe that each child comes to us full of purpose. It’s our amazing honor to come alongside them and ask, ‘What are you really good at?’ and ‘What are you really passionate about?’ The intersection of those two questions is where God’s calling for them begins,” says Mrs. Strange. “Psalm 139:14 is the inspiration for our Academies Program: ‘I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.’ We help students connect with their innate value as God’s child -- and then help them figure out what He has created them to spend their life doing.”

Synclair, who is in the Academy of Exercise and Sports Science, is a testament to the effectiveness of the NCCS approach. “My Academy experiences really grabbed my interest and let me know, yes, I’d like to do this next,” says Synclair, who plans to study physical therapy and athletic training in college. “NCCS has such a supportive family culture. Coach [Kristy] Sanders, my Academy director, always tells us to take all of the opportunities we’re offered.

You may have recently seen jonquils and other bulbs coming up all around Cobb County. It’s been warm and rainy, and the plants love it. I’ve been loving it too. We’ve been wearing shorts and flip flops in January! But the forecast does show cooler temps coming. An earlier than average warming event followed by another period of freezing temperatures is called a false spring.

There really is no need to worry if you see daffodils, tulips and other spring bulbs emerging long before spring: These bulbs are hardy and can adapt to the erratic weather, despite preferring a more traditional winter. With unusually warm weather, bulbs may sprout a n d show a few inches of green. That foliage can be damaged by extreme cold and drying winds and the tips of the leaves may also turn brown. However, as long as the flower buds are below the ground, they are protected from the cold. If they do rise up above the soil surface, consider adding a layer of mulch to protect them.

Some plants and trees may not be as lucky. A light frost doesn’t usually cause major damage except to very tender plants. But a hard freeze, will freeze the water in plant cells, causing damage to cell walls or frost damage. Frost damage occurs when ice crystals pull moisture from the leaf tissue, dehydrating the leaves. With trees, freezing temperatures can kill newly opened buds and significantly set the tree back. If the tree is under a lot of stress, it could die — otherwise it shouldn’t harm it. However, the tree will have to reform all the leaf and flower buds and play catch up all season long. It may not fruit and flower all season and production may also be low.

Not all plants are affected the same. One of the many benefits of native trees and shrubs is that they are less affected by a false spring than non-native plants. They are more acclimated to their environment, and they use photoperiod as a guide more than temperature.

Even the hardiest of natives can succumb to repeated false spring events. The extent of damage depends not only on the stage of the plant’s development, but also on when the weather began to warm, how long it stayed warm, humidity, how cold it got and for how many days the cold weather lasted. Early blooming plants and fruits are most susceptible. In the false spring of 2017, South Carolina lost 90% of their peach crop and Georgia peaches and blueberries were severely damaged.

Climate scientists have shown that spring is coming earlier these days. Studies show that many plants are blooming earlier in response. If you are losing plants to false spring, consider mulching the soil surface after you plant in the fall. Mulch keeps the soil temperature more constant and will protect premature sprouts from damage. Several inches of straw, bark chips or evergreen boughs will provide good protection. How fortunate is that? A spa should be a place that is tranquil, peaceful, and refreshing. We feel confident that we have achieved this objective.

Spa La Paz’s staff is made up of veteran licensed aestheticians, detail-oriented management, and the skillful and attentive oversight of one of Cobb County’s most respected physicians, Dr. Paas.

Our licensed aestheticians, Nikki and Maria, offer decades of experience. Coupling this experience with the latest cutting-edge technology will offer our spa patrons an uncommonly effective and enjoyable experience.

3 Steps to Your First Family Fishing Adventure by Stephanie Vatalaro If your kids are anything like mine, keeping them entertained probably feels like Mission: Impossible, especially when it comes to finding new family activities. One of my favorite ways to put a new spin on family time is with a traditional pastime that’s making a comeback — fishing.

Growing up on the water, I’ve always loved to fish. Now that I’m a mom, I love sharing the sport with my daughter, Isla. But even if you’re a first-timer, fishing is an easy, kid-friendly activity that you can bond over as a family with just a few beginner steps.

Step 1: Find a fishing spot

Going fishing doesn’t mean you have to pack up for a long drive far away from home. Places to fish are closer than you think. McNeels Lake, located about 15 minutes west of Marietta, is a popular destination for new and experienced anglers alike.

You can also find tons of places to fish throughout Georgia with an interactive map at www.TakeMeFishing.org. When selecting a family-friendly fishing spot, look for amenities like play areas, easy parking and picnic facilities as well as safe water and boat access.

Step 2: Gather your bait and tackle

There are two primary types of bait: natural and artificial. It’s up to you which to use, although beginners often have better luck with

Earthworms are a great choice because they’re easy to put on a hook and don’t require any sophisticated technique to lure a bite.

When it comes to gear, simple is best for newbies.

To help limit line tangles, choose a kid-friendly starter rod-and-reel combo designed for smaller hands. Some other essentials you’ll need include fishing line, hooks, bobbers, sinkers and bait. Pro tip: To keep kids engaged, bring snacks and games to pull out during downtime.

Step 3: Rig your line and cast

Rigs are the combination of hooks, sinkers, bobbers and other addons to your fishing line. To begin rigging, tie a hook on the end of your line. One easy knot for first-timers is called the improved clinch knot. Next, pinch one or two small split shot sinkers to your main line six to 12 inches from the hook. Finally, clip a circle bobber to the rig three to four feet above the hook.

When you’re ready to cast, unlock your line and hold it with your fingers. Then, swing your rod in an arc, letting go of the line at the peak. To reel in a catch, wait for the fish to stop tugging, then point your rod skyward. Begin reeling in your catch, slowly lowering your rod until it reaches a 45-degree angle. Repeat this process as needed.

With these simple steps, you’ve already got the basics for a family fishing adventure. Before you hit the water, remember that the most important item an angler can carry is their fishing license.

by Heather Meliski This month I’m taking a break from my monthly travel article to share with you an initiative I am passionate about, the Nickajack Elementary Foundation. I’d like to share some of the amazing things we have accomplished so far this year. The Nickajack Elementary Foundation (NEF) is comprised of a board of parent volunteers and staff whose mission is to help fund STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education initiatives for the 1,100+ students of Nickajack Elementary School. Our goal is to spark inspiration through STEAM learning and technology to cultivate potential STEAM-related future leaders. We achieve these initiatives and goals through the generous support of our Nickajack community by individual donations and corporate matching, as well as corporate sponsorship.

NEF to fund a variety of initiatives such as Nickajack’s new Math lab which provides additional hands-on learning in Math that supplements our regular classroom learning, teacher grants, other hands-on learning experiences, classroom tools, student enrichment and instructional programs via online learning software, and professional development for teachers.

As of the time of this printing, we have raised over $118,000 – and counting – for the 2019-20 Back the Jack campaign primarily through individual donations and corporate matching. This amount has greatly exceeded our fundraising goal of $100,000. This has allowed the

At the beginning of October, we hosted our Great Skate event which is our annual celebration of another successful Back the Jack campaign.

Everyone had an amazing time at Sparkles skating, playing games, getting their faces painted, enjoying delicious food provided by Siracusa’s Pizza and Twin Smokers BBQ, and meeting some of our corporate sponsors.

In addition to individual donations and corporate matching, an important aspect of our ability to reach our annual fundraising goals is corporate sponsorship by local businesses (which is my role on the board and the area I am most passionate about) which also saw significant year-over-year growth. WINTER IS NOW HERE: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THIS COLD SEASON Winter is now upon us and you know what that means - creating a Winter To-Do list. Will you make snowmen, go skiing, perhaps snowboarding? Whatever fun events you may have planned, make sure to also include a few home maintenance tasks. The following may help you save costs this winter and keep the warmth in!

PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT While it’s great to have the house heated to your perfect temperature while you’re at home, it’s really not that necessary to keep your home that warm while your family is at work and school. Having a programmable thermostat can reduce costs by setting scheduled temperature changes.

WINTERIZE YOUR WINDOWS Many windows tend to let heat seep out, but there’s two ways to directly combat this: Temporary storm windows, or an insulator kit. The insulator kit will provide films to cover your windows and is a less expensive alternative to storm windows. Both are great options for insulating your windows.

INSULATE, INSULATE, INSULATE Having the proper insulation can make a huge difference in keeping the cold out, and the warmth in! However, some older homes may lack proper insulation. By scheduling a consultation, you may be able to bulk up your home’s insulation.

COVER THE WINDOWS Applying new windows or films to windows can be intimidating, but you can also combat heat leaks by getting insulating curtains!

Not only can these curtains help prevent heat leaks, but they can also be stylish while adding warmth to the room.

INSTALL A DOOR SWEEP Have you noticed that some doors leave a small gap between the bottom of the door and the floor? This actually prevents floors from being scratched, however if the gap is sizeable enough it can lead to heat loss. You can fix this by installing door sweeps! These sweeps won’t harm your floors and will close any gaps to keep the heat in.

Try to make sure that there’s no water in either of these systems during the colder months because they might freeze over.

SWEEP OUT THE CHIMNEY One of the best parts of winter is sitting in front of a cozy fire, but you have to make sure you do it safely! If you burn log fires at a lower temperature, tar can actually start to build up in your chimney.

Make sure before the winter season you get your chimney cleaned by a chimney sweep service to avoid any unwanted fires.

1. CHOOSE A BREED THAT FITS YOUR LIFESTYLE. The choice of a pet should be a carefully researched decision and not an impulse purchase. Owners who get a dog based on its appearance, and not breed characteristics, can be in for a bad surprise. 5. FEED YOUR DOG PROPERLY. Feed your pet a well-balanced and nutritious diet. There are many quality dog food choices on the market today. With a little research, such as www.dogfoodadvisor.com, you can select a food that is best for your pet. Make sure to ask your veterinarian about specific recommendations based on your dog’s individual health and then come see us in our retail shop for all sorts of great food options.

6. TRAIN AND SOCIALIZE YOUR DOG. Dogs should at least understand basic direction like “sit” and “stay.” In an emergency situation, these cues could literally save your pet’s life. By training and socializing your dog, you greatly reduce the chances of your dog developing behavioral problems, getting lost or ending up in a shelter. At K-9 Coach, our puppy classes, Super Puppy, are open to puppies between 10 and 20 weeks of age and who are least 10 days past their first DHPP vaccination. They run year-round and so you can join any time!

7. GIVE YOUR PUP PLENTY OF EXERCISE AND PLAY. Dogs need play and exercise to truly be healthy.

So, play together. Some ideas include fetch and frisbee, of course, but also games like hide and seek, soccer, water-based games (for those who like to swim), long walks with play breaks, etc...

8. GROOM YOUR DOG. A clean, well-groomed dog is happier and healthier. Also, dogs need conditioning to human touch, in order to live safely in close contact with people, and grooming is an ideal way to provide this. Regular grooming also helps make physical examinations at the vet less stressful.

9. CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG. Whenever you take your dog for a walk or to play outside, make sure you bring some bags to pick up after your dog. It’s irresponsible and unhealthy not to clean up dog waste. It’s also against the law and makes us dog owners look bad!
