Aharon Hill is the owner of Aharon Hill Photography, and specializes in family, child and infant portraiture. Her photography has been featured in publications such as Atlanta Weddings Magazine, Occasions and Jezebel, and on blogs such as Style Me Pretty, Wedding Chicks and Style Unveiled.

In her own words: The Anulewicz family has lived in downtown Smyrna for more than 14 years, and they love being close to so much of the best of what Smyrna has to offer, including the restaurants, shops, the arboretum the duck pond, and one of their family’s favorite places, the Smyrna Library. Their oldest son, Adam, loves being able to walk to Campbell High School, where he’s a freshman, and their daughter, Sylvia, is in the sixth grade at the Atlanta Girls’ School. Chris practices law at Balch & Bingham in Atlanta, and Teri currently represents House District 42, which includes parts of Smyrna and Marietta, in the Georgia House of Representatives, following nearly ten years of service on the Smyrna City Council.

My job encompasses far more than getting clients to smile and look at the camera. It is about documenting the moments of bliss, curiosity and discovery; moments that are defined by pure magic and connection. At every session, I strive to capture these magical moments in the glow of soft natural light, creating treasures that my clients will cherish throughout their lives.

In so many ways, being a mother to two boys has informed my approach to photography. It is all about knowing how to communicate my client (no matter their age or maturity), and being to make them laugh. Children, especially, respond to a kindred spirit, so I strive to create a lighthearted atmosphere for my child clients by acting silly. The same lighthearted atmosphere helps my adult clients let their guard down, and give me their most genuine and heartfelt smiles.

Before taking a leap of faith by leaving my job and starting my photography business in 2008, I was a practicing attorney. Having lived the attorney lifestyle (long days at a desk and lots of suits!), I am thankful that my job now affords me the opportunity to create and play, but most of all, to make people happy.

Makeup can be a way to express yourself. It can also be a way to hide something you may find undesirable, a blemish or a scar perhaps.

Makeup can also be used to completely transform your entire look... as a matter of fact, depending on the way you apply it, you can make someone look like an entirely different person. What is your makeup look? Are you natural, dramatic or somewhere in between?

As a fun little experiment, I posted these two photos on social media with the caption, #beforeandafter “these pictures were taken less than an hour apart”. They are not too dramatic, however, there are definitely some noticeable differences.

In the photo with makeup applied, my skin tone looks more even, my nose (and actually my entire face) looks longer and narrower and my eyes look bigger. Wouldn’t you agree?

The comments ranged from the expected “pretty in both” to “WOW, you’ve got guts” to “I need a makeup lesson from you”.

makeup much better than the one without. As someone who has had a life-long love affair with makeup, it is no surprise that I definitely feel more confident when I am wearing some. However, the funny part is that although I am a professional makeup artist, if you see me in the community you probably recognize the non-makeup photo of me as more familiar. This is because as a mother of little girls, I don’t want them to think you can only look “pretty” in makeup. So... like a fireman, police officer or anyone who wears a uniform to work, makeup is part of my work uniform. It is part of the character that I “play” when I am in work mode.

I did a little research on this topic. Scienceofpeople.com wrote an article titled: Why do Women Wear Makeup? The Science Behind our Makeup Obsession. Here is what they came up with...

“An estimated 44% of American women do not like to leave their homes without makeup on. Research shows there are two primary reasons why women wear makeup: 1. Camouflage – Women who are anxious and insecure tend to use makeup to appear less noticeable.

2. Seduction – Women who want to be noticeably more attractive tend to use makeup to feel more confident, sociable and assertive. *Those 44 percent of women believe that if they show their natural, untouched face, they won’t be able to accomplish either of those things, and they will be treated differently. What do you think about this research? Do you agree?

Well whether you agree or not there is no disputing that makeup can absolutely be an amazing illusion. Also, here’s a shocking fact. Did you know that as of July 2019, beauty has blown up to be a $532 billion industry? Wow!

What is your “why” for wearing makeup?

In the words of Lady Gaga, “Whether I am wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I am always the same person inside” Get up, dress up, show up and never give up!

Travel Trends and Top Destinations for 2020 Every year the travel industry identifies emerging trends and top destinations for the upcoming year. Some of the trends I highlighted for 2019, such as skip-gen travel, micro-travel or ‘tiny trips’, DNA/ancestry travel, and adventure travel, continue to be top trends for 2020.

With what is known in the travel industry as ‘wave season’ – the most popular time of year to book vacations – starting this month, here are some of my top trends and destinations for the new year to inspire your next adventure.

Multigenerational Travel My top travel trend for the new year is multigenerational travel. Multigenerational travel is where several generations within a family – grandparents, parents, and grandchildren or even aunts/uncles and cousins – all vacation together. Given the recent focus on experiences rather than stuff, these vacations are great for gift giving, celebrating milestones such as wedding anniversaries, and even relocating a family holiday to a new location. I may be a bit biased because multigenerational travel is one of my specialties, but I highly recommend booking these vacations with a travel professional. With a multigenerational vacation there are varying levels of health and mobility, many personalities and opinions, and differing needs within each individual family group. We are experts at taking everyone’s input and opinions into account, providing unbiased recommendations, and even acting as the

Train Travel With an increased focus on lowering one’s carbon footprint while traveling, traveling by train is one of the fastest-growing trends.

Trains are one of the most efficient and lowest carbon-emitting modes of transportation available. Train travel also allows you to slow down and enjoy the scenery around you.

Modern conveniences such as Wi-Fi, improved dining options, and even floor to ceiling panoramic windows are just a few of the new features you will find on many trains. Luxury train travel is on the rise in both the US and Europe, and includes five-star experiences, gorgeous views, and luxurious accommodations. Train travel is definitely about the journey and not the destination.

Hawaii Hawaii is one of my most-requested destinations and it is also the #1 destination choice for family and multigenerational travel. The Hawaiian Islands are a great option for travelers who prefer to travel within the United States or that do not have a passport but who also want to visit an exotic, tropical destination. Each island offers a completely different vacation experience and with the ease and low-cost of inter-island flights, it’s easy to island hop to visit multiple islands during your vacation. Delta also offers daily non-stop flights to Honolulu which makes it even easier to get to paradise.

Japan All eyes are on Japan as Tokyo is set to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. Along with the great food and shopping, pagodas, gardens, karaoke, and sumo in Tokyo, consider taking an architectural tour of the city. And since you’re traveling all that way, make sure to venture outside the capitol city to visit other destinations such as Kyoto and Osaka.

The Maldives It seems like you can’t scroll through Instagram these days without coming across a picture of The Maldives, and with good reason. The islands are full of amazing resorts with overwater bungalows, gorgeous beaches, and crystal-clear turquoise water. The Maldives is comprised of over 1,900 atolls and is the lowest-lying country on earth so they are leading the charge with sustainability. They also aim to be carbon-neutral by the end of 2020. If you’re looking for a dream destination to get away from it all, The Maldives is the perfect choice.

Friends, forgive me for stating the obvious: It’s cold outside. Even if you followed my advice back in September to plant a fall garden, even if your budding cloves of garlic are safely tucked into a wellmulched bed and your collards are standing tall against the fourth or fifth freeze warning of the season, you might, just possibly, be feeling a little … bored.

It doesn’t help that this is the time of the year when all the seed catalogs start arriving. If you aren’t yet one of us receiving these catalogs, boy do I ever recommend finding your way onto their mailing lists. Hope springs eternal every time Burpee promises a tomato that really might survive our climate without succumbing to wilt, and heirloom suppliers like Baker Creek (a Giving Garden supporter for three years running) offer almost-forgotten varieties that make a Georgia gardener feel like a member of the Slow Food movement. It’s fun to browse, and it keeps you busy for a few afternoons of drawing up garden plans, figuring out crop rotation, writing out order lists.

And then what? It’s way too early to plant any of those seeds -even at Our Giving Garden we won’t start our eggplant, pepper or tomato seeds until February.

Luckily, I have a suggestion: Turn your attention to splitting up the plants you already have. This can take various forms. First, outside: Choose some plants outside that are getting crowded, and maybe

aren’t blooming as well as you’d like. Daylilies, hostas and iris are great beginner plants for digging up and dividing. Once you get some experience in the process, you might decide to try the same with sedum, goldenrod, purple coneflowers and many other perennials that spread readily in our gardening zone. Choose a week where the ground hasn’t frozen; and be prepared to have a spot to replant them right away, or a friend who’s ready to take the extras and maybe share some plants with you. Hooray! Free plants!

Another option is to look at your indoors plants. So many houseplants are a snap to split up. Christmas cactus? Break off a branch and stick it in some potting soil. Pothos? Cut off a stem and stick it in some water, then wait while it grows new roots. If this gives you more pothos or Christmas cactus than you really need in your life, we hope you’ll join us at Our Giving Garden for our upcoming propagation seminar and houseplant swap.

The skin is the largest organ in your body and the most visible one. It reflects your health with astounding accuracy, so treat it right by pampering, cleaning, and feeding it safe and healthy nutrients.

Some of us are born with naturally beautiful skin, but most have skin issues due to genes or improper skin care routines. While DIY skin hacks should not replace a good skin care routine, here are some genius ways you can use household items to save you time and money or help you in a pinch.

1. AT-HOME BURN ACCIDENTS

Burn yourself with your hair iron, saucepan, or tea kettle? Instead of applying ice to minor burns, reach for some raw honey and slather on a thick layer. It will immediately cut the sting of the burn and also provide antibacterial protection while keeping skin hydrated.

2. HAIR REMOVAL WITHOUT THE RAZOR Shaving legs, underarms, and backs can hurt the skin if done too often without the proper moisturizer or shaving gel. Instead, mix together 1 tablespoon of two percent iodine with 1 cup of baby oil and rub it

Exfoliating or removing dead cells off your chapped lips will help restore their natural softness faster. Mix 2 teaspoons of sugar with 1 teaspoon of honey to form a paste. Apply the paste to your lips and allow it to set (approximately one minute). Use your fingers to gently rub the mixture around on your lips to loosen the dead skin cells. Wash it off with lukewarm water. Apply a little honey to lock in the moisture

ALL ABOUT APPRAISALS - PART 3 WHAT DO APPRAISERS LOOK FOR?

This month we’ll discuss what appraisers look for “inside” your home and the completion of the appraisal report.

The Interior

When the appraiser moves inside, he or she is not there to consider your choice of paint color, the pattern of your wallpaper or the curtains you have chosen. These and other similar elements of the home are considered cosmetic and are easily changed by the buyer and also do not have an effect on the appraised value.

Rather than the easily changed details, the appraiser will be looking at the quality of the finish and materials used. For example, if your house has a bedroom which is lime green and bright purple it will not affect the appraised value. However, if the walls are painted a sedate off-white and are dented, pitted, and marked with chipped woodwork the estimated value may take a hit.

Another relatively unknown element of the appraisal is the assessment of layout. With the majority of homes, the design is standard and will not impact the value of the property. However, if the floor plan is unusual or the placement of the various rooms is atypical, then the appraiser may take this into account when calculating their value.

The type of heating will also be noted as there is a difference in value between homes with forced air heating, hot water baseboard heating systems and radiators. Part of the assessment of the heating system will also involve looking at the furnace, hot water boiler, and cooling systems.

type of fixtures and fittings, as well as, the floors throughout the home. If you have an attic, the appraiser will check that out, along with taking into consideration the insulation levels, the access to the attic, whether it has been “finished” and whether or not it has heating or cooling.

Other elements of the interior appraisal include: • The size and shape of rooms.

• If remodeling or renovations have taken place, the quality of the work and materials, the adherence to code and permitting, and the impact on the functional layout of the home will all be considered.

• The quality and condition of the kitchen appliances.

• Energy efficient measures such as solar power.

• Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as, any flood alert or similar systems that have been installed by the current owner.

• Anything else that the appraiser may consider to be significantly adverse or a detrimental issue for the value of the home. They are also at liberty to include any exceptionally positive issues that make the home more valuable than other comparables in the area.

Either before the visit or after, the appraiser will carry out a significant amount of research in order to provide an accurate appraisal. In general, the appraiser will look at:

Comparables

When choosing which comparables to use in their calculations, an appraiser should identify properties which have the same, or very similar characteristics as the property they are appraising. This includes the : • Age of the property • Gross living area • The number of bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.

• View from the property • General condition • Quality of construction and design.

• Heating and cooling systems • Basement • Attic • Parking facilities • Lot size The appraiser must also record where the comparables are located in relation to the property under appraisal, how long they were on the market, what they sold for, any special conditions that affected the sale price and where the appraiser obtained all of this data.

The Report

All of this information from both onsite and offsite is pulled together along with: • Current market conditions.

• Whether property values are increasing, stable or decreasing in the neighborhood.

• The current levels of supply and demand and housing stock.

• How long the appraiser believes the property will be on the market.

• The number of other similar properties are for sale in the area.

• How many comparable sales there have been in the neighborhood in the last 12 months.

Then, and only then, does the appraiser compile their final report. In this, they will give their considered and informed professional opinion as to the appraised value of the home.

GRACEPOINT’S Program for Dyslexic Learners Receives National Accreditation GRACEPOINT, a private Christian school for dyslexic learners, announced that accreditation was received for the school’s Orton-Gillingham program by the AOGPE (Academy of Orton Gillingham Practitioners and Educators). The school’s instructional program is now 1 of only 16 programs in the nation to receive AOGPE accreditation. This milestone is pivotal to GRACEPOINT’s ongoing mission to equip dyslexic students with the skills needed to become independent and confident learners.

The Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. All academic teachers at GRACEPOINT are trained as OG Classroom Educators. Teachers are observed and accessed throughout the year by an OG Fellow, the highest level of practitioner in the Academy.

GRACEPOINT serves students in grades 1st through 8th. Each day students receive 75 minutes of explicit OG reading instruction with a 1:5 teacher-student ratio. Remediation is typically completed in 3 to 4 years for most students, allowing them to transition into a more traditional learning environment. “To have your OG instruction endorsed by the Acad-

Let’s Start 2019 off on the Right Paw! Welcome 2020! Glad you’re here. By now, you have certainly been inundated with magazine articles, websites and television spots targeted to helping you start the year off right and achieve your goals. That’s great! Part of me really likes resolutions. They’re kind of like a reset “Let’s do this right!” button for life. But, unfortunately, more resolutions are abandoned than are achieved.

This month’s article is dedicated to a simple, yet powerful resolution – To have a better relationship with my dog(s)!

Simply follow our 9 Tips for the New Year and we guarantee that your dog will be better behaved, you and your family & friends will enjoy your pup more and, in the end, you will have a better relationship with them.

A TIRED DOG IS A GOOD DOG. Make sure your puppy or dog gets healthy, adequate exercise. Good exercise improves overall behavior because it burns toxic energy – leaving your dog more relaxed and able to interact with their family in a better way. We prefer structured activities like The Club at K-9 Coach over a dog park. Call us picky, but we also like having vaccination records and temperament tests for every guest! If your pup is a member of The Club, daily activities include things like buddy play, manners training, sports and fitness enrichments, swim sessions in the indoor, heated pool, massage, rest and more.

TRAIN EARLY AND OFTEN. Puppies trained as young dogs, using positive reinforcement techniques, are significantly less likely to exhibit behavior issues and are more likely to become a wonderful companion.

Adult dogs whose parents maintain their training are happier, spend more quality time with the family and generally live longer. Don’t tell anyone, but it’s kind of like going to the gym! That’s why we offer classes yearround. So, make sure to check the site.

SAY PLEASE AND THANK YOU. Having your dog sit to exit your home, car or other vehicles is similar to teaching a child to say thank you and please. This impulse control will result in a more likeable pup and will also keep them safe. We don’t accept rude behavior in people or children. Why would we accept it from our pups?

PREVENTION NOT PUNISHMENT. Punishing behaviors can cause side effects such as aggression, anxiety and fear. Management and prevention are keys to a reliable and effective training program and developing a wonderful working relationship with your companion. Prevent poor choices on the behalf of your dog by setting up the environment for success and then train for reliable control.

BE YOUR DOG’S ADVOCATE. Your pup counts on you to keep them safe. So, avoid situations that cause stress, fear or are unsafe. Carefully choose who and what is introduced into your pup’s world. If it’s a service provider, check them out. Drop in unscheduled. Talk to their staff.

Talk to their customers. If they’re good enough for your dog, they won’t have anything to hide.

In operation since 1974, WDP is tuition-free, serves 2 nutritious meals daily, and provides transportation at no charge. Harvest Salad This Harvest Salad uses beautiful produce, delicata squash, pomegranates and kale, as well as, as farro and goat cheese to make a hearty cold weather meal. Toss it all together with a maple apple cider vinaigrette for a delicious healthy treat.

INGREDIENTS • 1- 2 bunches kale center ribs removed and torn into small pieces (6-8 cups) • (romaine lettuce can easily be substituted if you are not a kale fan) • 1 delicata squash de-seeded and cut into half moons • 1 cup cooked farro • 4 ounces soft goat cheese chevre • arils from one pomegranate about 1 cup • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder • salt • pepper FOR DRESSING: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup • 1 garlic clove pressed or finely minced • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika • pinch of salt and pepper PAGE 37

Preheat oven to 400°F. Toss delicata squash in 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt, pepper and chili powder, arrange in a single layer on a lined baking sheet, Roast for about 15 minutes, or until golden and tender.

Set aside.

Whisk together all ingredients for dressing – we used a mason jar to shake them until combined) In a large bowl, add kale, delicata squash, farro, goat cheese and pomegranate arils. Pour dressing over and toss to fully coat everything in the dressing.

Removing Seeds from a Pomegranate • Roll the fruit first to loosen the seeds.

• Score around the middle and tear it open into halves.

• Hold each half over a bowl, seeds facing down and tap the skin with a wooden spoon, squeezing a little to release the seeds.

• Alternatively, score 4 lines from top to bottom to quarter the pomegranate.

• Submerge the pomegranate in a bowl of water and pull apart the quarters, releasing the seeds with your hands.

• The pith will float and the seeds will sink. Remove the pith and discard, then drain the seeds.
