MISSION AND PHILOSOPHY MISSION STATEMENT: The Boys' Latin School of Maryland instills the core values of courage, integrity and compassion in each boy as embodied in our motto, Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem). By understanding how boys learn best, our talented faculty fosters enduring personal relationships and empowers each student to strive for academic and personal excellence.

PHILOSOPHY: At Boys’ Latin, our mission is timeless. Whether we are learning and growing on our campus or in our virtual schoolhouse, our priorities remain the same. Ensuring that each and every one of our students is known -- for who he is today and all that he can be tomorrow. Because we know a tight-knit community builds a foundation of confidence. Of compassion. Of curiosity. And of character.

Our goal is to provide an in-person experience, as safely as possible, for as many students as we can. Given the current dynamic situation, we recognize that our plans may change. Therefore, we have constructed scenarios that allow us to be flexible, offering five days a week in-person learning, blended learning, or online learning. At our core, we are a community that thrives on being together, so whether we are learning on-campus, in our virtual schoolhouse, or some combination of both, we are committed to staying connected and holding tight to the spirit and energy of our community. While we are committed to providing an on-campus experience, the health and well-being of our entire community is our highest priority. As a result, we may need to transition from one model to the other.

COVID-19 has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. While COVID-19 is highly contagious, BL is taking precautions and implementing safety measures to prevent the spread. All members of the BL community have a shared responsibility to support and comply with policies and protocols to protect the health and safety of our community.

Throughout this document, we have outlined the safety measures BL students and their families will be expected to adhere to as they return to campus. In addition to this Policy, BL has also developed and implemented COVID-19 Safety Protocols and Procedures (the “Safety Protocols”), which can be accessed here. The Safety Protocols more fully detail the measures that BL is putting in place to mitigate the risk of the spread of COVID-19 as BL reopens its’ campuses. To prepare both this document and BL’s safety protocols we reviewed guidance issued by the following: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Education and the Maryland Department of Health.

This document and the other protocols and procedures may be revised or updated from time-to-time, as necessary or appropriate, and in consideration of the guidance and recommendations of the resources identified above. This document, as revised from time-to-time, will be in effect from August 6, 2020 until otherwise rescinded by BL. Parents, and students when age-appropriate, are expected to adhere to the requirements described. Parents are expected to ensure their child(ren) understand what is expected of them. Failure to comply with this document may result in a student being sent home, disciplinary consequences and/or the removal of a student and his family at the discretion of the School.

REOPENING SCENARIOS SCENARIO A: IN-PERSON LEARNING All students will return to campus in-person 5-days a week. The size of our campus, coupled with the size of our student body, will allow all boys to have an in-person learning experience every day. Students and faculty will return, with appropriate precautions in place as described below and following CDC guidelines and recommendations from other resources, in smaller groups or cohorts by division.

While the program may look and feel different from our traditional experience, we will be providing a high-level educational experience.

SCENARIO B: BLENDED LEARNING Our blended learning model provides students with both an in-person and virtual learning experience, allowing for increased flexibility should changes in guidelines or health conditions necessitate. Students and faculty will return, with appropriate precautions in place, including smaller groups or cohorts by division. This is done to minimize the total number of people on-campus and reduce the potential spread of disease. In this blended model, there are simultaneously virtual offerings that integrate with the in-person, on-campus experience. For instance, students may be remotely logging into a given class or program while others are in-person on-campus.

SCENARIO C: FULL, DISTANCE LEARNING MODEL The goal of our virtual schoolhouse is to provide a robust academic program and experiences across all divisions that keep our community connected. Our distance learning program is designed to be developmentally appropriate by grade and division level and to build the essential skills of critical-thinking, inquiry, resilience, and collaboration that will prepare students for the challenges of today and beyond.

We will be considering a wide range of data points and conditions when making the decision to transition to on-line classes, including public health guidance, conditions in the larger Baltimore community as well as the incidents that may occur within the student and/or faculty population.

TECHNOLOGY ENHANCEMENTS Recognizing the importance of providing a fully integrated program, classrooms will be outfitted with additional web cameras and technology applications to allow for the streaming of classes for students who are unable to attend on-campus classes or choose to learn virtually. More information will be shared divisionally around specific programs and materials.

Additionally, every Boys’ Latin faculty member has engaged in professional development around virtual and blended learning, primarily through Global Online Academy, to help provide our students with the most robust academic experience possible.

We recognize that individual families best understand the needs of their son and of their own family. Families have the option to have their son remain at home and participate in the distance learning model. We ask that families indicate their desire to do so no later than Monday, August 17, 2020, by emailing their son’s division heads.

We are all living in a world that changes from day-to-day. This guideline is drafted with the current information available. Please understand that all policies, procedures and protocols are subject to change at any time by the School.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS We have implemented a variety of steps, listed below, as we continue to focus on the health and safety of students and employees while on-campus. When you return to campus, you’ll find certain spaces have been modified while others have been reconfigured. Faculty and staff will undergo training prior to the beginning of the school year, and time will be spent reviewing and practicing procedures with students as part of the orientation and first days of school.

FACE MASKS AND DRESS CODE Students and employees are required to wear face masks at all times when inside a building and outside when physical distancing cannot be observed. Students must put their face masks on while they are in the car, so that they are covered when they come in contact with others. Cloth or disposable masks are acceptable; masks with vents are not permitted. On the first day of school, boys will be provided with a cloth BL face mask.

Students can also wear the face masks of their choosing provided it is school appropriate and that it is of solid color or patterns and free of slogans, writing or branding other than a BL logo. It is expected that a students’ last name is written on the inside of each of their masks. Most importantly, the face mask must fit securely and cover a student’s mouth and nose throughout the school day. In addition to face masks, students may also choose to wear face shields for additional protection. The School reserves the right to decide if a student’s mask is sufficient and appropriate. Each division will maintain a reserve of disposable masks.

All divisional dress codes have been modified to allow for easier, nightly cleaning of clothing.

• The lower school dress code will remain consistent with years past, with the exception that students will no longer change clothes for physical education and, based on weather, shorts will be allowed later into the school year. Students in grades K-2 may wear khaki elastic waist shorts and are not required to wear a belt.

• In the middle and upper school, students may wear a BL polo shirt or other collared shirt and khaki style shorts or pants. Students may also wear tennis shoes or sneakers in addition to leather shoes.

• Further details for each division will be updated by the division heads in the coming weeks.

HANDWASHING AND HYGIENE Extra time for hand hygiene will be built into the school day, particularly for younger students. An increased number of hand sanitizing stations are placed throughout the buildings. Please consider sending your child to school with his own individual hand sanitizing bottle. We ask that you discuss with your sons the importance of hand washing and attending to their personal hygiene.

PHYSICAL DISTANCING Physical distancing is essential to limit the spread of the virus. The School will be implementing strategies to assist in maintaining appropriate distance throughout the school day. Desks and classrooms will be arranged to comply with physical distancing guidelines. Hallways will be monitored to limit congestion. Large group gatherings will not be permitted anywhere on-campus, including common areas.

CAMPUS CLEANING AND DISINFECTING Increased cleaning and sanitizing protocols will take place on all areas of campus. In addition to nightly disinfecting and deep cleaning of school buildings, high-touch surfaces and restrooms will be cleaned and disinfected throughout the school day. All air filters have been replaced and upgraded to the highest quality commercially available.

SCHOOL PROCEDURES

As we contend with COVID-19, we will do our best to ensure that the community on-campus is healthy and stays healthy. In the event of a confirmed case of COVID-19, we will rely upon the State Health Department’s Guidance for identification, isolation and school closure procedures.

DAILY SCREENING All students and employees will complete an electronic, daily health assessment prior to arriving on-campus, developed by Pinpoint Health.

This program can be accessed via a smartphone application or through email/web access. Students and/or parents will be required to take and record a student’s temperature every morning and answer a series of questions around health and well-being. Based on the results, boys will either be cleared to go to School or instructed to contact their physician.

The assessment must be completed no later than 7:15 AM so that School administration can prepare for their arrival. Daily screening protocols and procedures follow guidelines set forth by the Maryland Department of Health and CDC. Students and employees who fail to complete the daily screening will be prohibited from campus. Daily entrance protocols will be reviewed by each division in orientation.

BECOMING ILL DURING THE SCHOOL DAY If any member of the community becomes ill while at School, they will be sent to a separate health suite equipped with an independent ventilation system. They will be assessed and sent home accordingly. Students must be picked up within 60 minutes from the time families are contacted.

FOR ANYONE WHO IS SICK OR EXPOSED In order to maintain the health of our community, families are required to adhere to the following protocols: • If your son is sick (COVID-19 symptoms or other), he may not come to campus.

• Families must contact the School if a student or a member of a student’s household tests positive for COVID-19, or if a student has had direct exposure to someone diagnosed with, or directly exposed to, COVID-19.

The School nurse, in conjunction with the local health department, will provide direction regarding a student’s return to campus, including appropriate notifications and contact tracing.

RETURN TO SCHOOL Students and employees who have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is presumed positive, may not return to campus until the following criteria is met: • A negative COVID test is secured and/or an individual has quarantined for 14 days, beginning with the last day they had contact with the individual who tested positive.

The School nurse, in conjunction with the local health department, will provide direction regarding a student’s return to campus.

CAMPUS VISITORS For the time being, access to our campus will be limited to students, employees, and visitors who are critical to our operations such as outside contractors and only if they have obtained the permission of the headmaster. Parents are only permitted on-campus for drop-off and pick-up and must remain in their vehicles.

FOOD AND DRINK Students will eat lunch in their classrooms or outside, weather permitting.

Students will have the option of ordering a box lunch from SAGE (which will be delivered to classrooms) in advance or bringing lunch from home.

Access to water fountains and the sharing of food or beverages is prohibited. Students will be able to fill water bottles on-campus at various locations and should bring a reusable water bottle from home each day.

COMMUNITY EVENTS AND GATHERINGS We currently plan to maintain the 2020-2021 Master Calendar with no changes to holidays and breaks. While we will attempt to offer assemblies and other in-school gatherings virtually, events such as concerts, community events, and assemblies will be altered and perhaps canceled at least through December.

For the foreseeable future, we will not take field trips or offer any travel opportunities.

TRAVEL Students and employees should follow the current CDC and the state of Maryland travel health notices, which may require a 14-day quarantine period upon arrival home from travel. In addition, any travel restrictions by state or local authorities regarding domestic travel will be strictly enforced.

Despite the policies and other measures in place to mitigate the risk of transmission of COVID-19 on-campus, there are inherent risks that students and/or their families may become infected with COVID-19 due to the student’s participation in in-person classes at Boys' Latin. By allowing their child to come to campus for any reason, parents understand, acknowledge and voluntarily assume these risks on behalf of themselves and the student(s).

THE SCHOOL EXPERIENCE Our plan is to begin the school year with in-person learning for all boys, 5-days a week. As part of our planning, we encourage the use of outdoor space, weather permitting, for instruction, lunch, recess and breaks.

We also recognize that the situation is dynamic and that it may be necessary to deliver instruction in a blended fashion or fully on-line at different points during the school year. We have developed three different learning models, and we are prepared to move quickly between scenarios as a School, by division, or by grade as the situation and guidelines dictate.

LOWER SCHOOL OVERVIEW: The lower school’s approach to reopening leverages our small class sizes and spacious campus to ensure that our boys are healthy, safe, and engaged. Our schedule will allow students and teachers to effectively transition between an on-campus, blended, or virtual school experience, as conditions require. Our approach prioritizes that, first and foremost, we are a school for boys, and that, in any scenario, we will stay true to our mission.

IN-PERSON LEARNING (SCENARIO A) SCHEDULE: • All of our lower school students will be on-campus 5-days a week with the school day beginning at 8:00 AM and concluding at 3:00 PM. • The lower school will be divided into cohorts by grade level. Each cohort will have two to three homerooms, with roughly eight to ten students in each homeroom.

• With the exception of physical education, students will remain in their homerooms for all classes. Special area teachers will either visit homerooms or offer their classes virtually.

• Lunch will be eaten in the homeroom or outside, weather permitting.

• Recess will take place in grade-level cohorts.

CLASSROOMS: • Each grade-level cohort will have assigned restrooms and classrooms.

• Each cohort will use a separate entrance and exit and will occupy separate spaces in the building.

• Students will be spaced in the classroom to provide appropriate distancing throughout their day. Additional lower school spaces will be used as classrooms.

• Students will be assigned a desk for the entirety of the year and have individual bins for materials and supplies. Supplies, materials, and manipulatives will not be shared.

• Classrooms are all equipped with individual sinks and frequent hand-washing will be mandated.

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND 2020-2021 REOPENING PLAN DAILY PROGRAM: • Our schedule has been developed in a manner that will make a transition from in person learning, to blended learning to distance learning as seamless as possible.

• Each class will receive reading, language arts, math, and social studies instruction from their homeroom teacher. Students will have physical education 5-days a week outside.

• Each homeroom will have an additional subject (art, music, Spanish, technology, or science) each day.

• Specific grade level schedules will be outlined during orientation.

TECHNOLOGY:

• All lower school students will be issued a Chromebook. Additionally, students in grades K-1 will be issued iPads.

• Seesaw and onCampus will be used for instructional delivery, assignments, and communication. Training for parents and students on these platforms will be provided as part of the opening days of school.

BLENDED LEARNING (SCENARIO B) While the top priority for the School is to have lower school students on-campus 5-days a week, we recognize that we may need to transition to a blended model. Lower school students will be on-campus for in-person learning three days a week, and the other two days, they will be learning virtually. The daily schedule will largely remain the same.

DISTANCE LEARNING (SCENARIO C) Classes will take place 5 days a week and will be held via Zoom. Boys will participate in homeroom, reading, and language arts daily. All special area classes including physical education will be taught on a rotating schedule.

MIDDLE SCHOOL OVERVIEW: The goal of the middle school is to provide a rich and meaningful in-school experience for our students in a manner that is safe for students, families, faculty and staff. The generous space of our facilities coupled with the low student to teacher ratio has provided us with the opportunity to safely bring back middle school students for a 5-days a week, on-campus experience. Additionally, our schedule will allow students and teachers to effectively toggle between the on-campus, blended, and fully virtual school experiences, as conditions require.

• Middle school cohorts will be established by grade level. Each grade level cohort will have a unique entrance / exit from the building, dedicated bathrooms, and specific hallways and stairwells.

IN-PERSON LEARNING WILL INCLUDE SOME VIRTUAL CLASSES: • As a result of the cohort system and the necessity for physical distancing, some classes will be taught virtually while your son remains at school. Virtual classes will be proctored by a Boys’ Latin faculty member.

TECHNOLOGY:

• The school will provide a Chromebook for each middle school student. Please note that students may use their own computers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCHEDULE:

• The middle school schedule will consist of a Day 1 and a Day 2, and will follow the A through F block sectioning that we have used in the past. Each section will be broken into smaller groups in order to maintain social distancing. Students will receive direct instruction from a teacher for a portion of the period and then continue work in a proctored space during the alternate portion of the class.

BLENDED LEARNING (SCENARIO B) In the event that we need to transition to a blended model, middle school students will be on-campus for in-person learning three days a week, and the other two days they will be learning virtually. Depending upon the nature of the guidance, the rotation of groups may be by designated cohort or by entire grades.

DISTANCE LEARNING (SCENARIO C) In this model, all students would engage with their classes via Zoom. Students will follow a similar schedule to their on-campus program, but from home. Classes will take place 5-days a week, as well as regularly scheduled advisory, and activities. The schedule is designed to provide a congruent school experience in the event that we move to a fully virtual model.

UPPER SCHOOL OVERVIEW: Since we began our scenario planning, our goal has been to return to campus for an in-person learning experience for all students grades 9-12. To achieve that goal, we will use a phased-in approach as this will allow us to test our protocols and provide a platform for us to return safely. Additionally, we have created three learning models (in-person, blended, and virtual) and are prepared to transition between the various scenarios quickly should conditions and regulations require.

• In-person learning will include some virtual classes. As a result of the cohort system and the necessity for physical distancing, some classes will be taught virtually while your son remains at school. Virtual classes will be proctored by a Boys’ Latin faculty member.

• Students will eat lunch with their advisory group, in the classroom or outside, weather permitting.

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND 2020-2021 REOPENING PLAN

BLENDED LEARNING (SCENARIO B) In the upper school, students will be on-campus a minimum of two days a week, using the following schedule: • Mondays and Tuesdays 9th and 10th graders will be on-campus with 11th and 12th graders learning virtually.

• Thursdays and Fridays 11th and 12th will be on-campus with 9th and 10th graders learning virtually.

• Wednesday will serve as a flex day for all grades. Classes could be virtual or in-person, or may serve as an opportunity to host small groups of students on-campus for clubs and other extracurricular activities. The schedule will be planned and articulated prior to entering a blended model.

DISTANCE LEARNING (SCENARIO C) In this model, all students would engage with their classes via Zoom. The weekly schedule is designed so that each class meets three times, advisory meets three times, intentional community time is included, and physical education takes place multiple times a week. This model allows us to effectively reach the students, build relationships, and continue our academic and extracurricular programs.
