Discovering Degas Collecting in the Time of William Burrell Pippa Stephenson-Sit, Dr Martin Bellamy, Dr Yupin Chung, Professor Frances Fowle, and Vivien Hamilton

In 1874 the first Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris, shocking the art world with a radical new style of painting. Capturing contemporary subjects and everyday life, the ‘Impressionist’ artists were fascinated by the way light, colour and shape constantly change. But frequent rejection by the Paris Salon jury led some, including Edgar Degas, to look to Britain for a more receptive audience. This richly illustrated book explores the influence of London-based dealers such as Ernest Gambart and Charles Deschamps, and Glasgowbased dealer Alex Reid, who saw the market for French art in Britain, encouraging an early following among British collectors for artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Manet and Degas. William Burrell’s first opportunity to see Degas’s work on public display in Scotland was at the 1888 International Exhibition in Glasgow. Over a 40-year period Burrell collected more than 20 of Degas’s works, far more than any other UK collector, before he and his wife Constance donated their entire collection to the City of Glasgow. This book accompanied a major exhibition at the Burrell Collection, in which all of Burrell’s Degas pictures are displayed together for the first time, along with important works from national and international collections. Detailed catalogue entries look at the artist’s talent for capturing subjects such as the ballet, racehorses, and women bathing and dressing, giving a greater insight into why British collectors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries purchased these enduringly appealing works. This is also an important opportunity to understand Degas in his entirety, both as a brilliant artist and as a man whose opinions and ideas would not go unchallenged today. Published in association with the Burrell Collection.

Vanessa Bell A World of Form and Colour Edited by Fay Blanchard and Anthony Spira

Described in 1923 as ‘the most important woman painter in Europe’, Bell was a pioneering modernist and founding member of the Bloomsbury Group, a circle of influential English artists, writers and intellectuals in the first half of the twentieth century. The book traces Bell’s explorations into the Italian Renaissance, her encounters with the European avant-garde, including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, and her leading role in social and cultural activities such as the Friday Club, a group of artists founded in 1905, as well as the design enterprise Omega Workshops. It also looks at the key contributions Bell made towards the development of abstract art, creating what friend and art critic Roger Fry described as ‘visual music’. Collaborations formed an essential part of Bell’s approach to art, including with her sister, the writer Virginia Woolf, and the artist Duncan Grant, with whom Vanessa Bell’s all-encompassing approach to art found its ultimate expression in Charleston, the farmhouse they shared in East Sussex. Through over 130 works of art produced across her entire career this book examines the development of Bell’s landscapes, still lifes and portraits alongside her wider approach to creativity through design, furniture, ceramics and drawings. Including an essay from Rebecca Birrell and contributions from Judy Chicago, Paulina Olowska, Hayley Tompkins and The Singh Twins. Published in association with MK Gallery.

Tirzah Garwood Beyond Ravilious James Russell

Tirzah Garwood (1908–1951) proved herself an artist of rare talent, in a life tragically cut short by illness, yet little of her work has been seen in public since her Memorial Exhibition in 1952. Written by James Russell, author of the bestselling Ravilious (2015), this beautifully illustrated book was published to coincide with the Dulwich Picture Gallery exhibition Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious, the first exhibition to explore the full range of Garwood’s achievements. A witty observer of the human condition, Garwood made her first breakthrough as a wood engraver of rare ability while still in her teens. After marrying Eric Ravilious she became a devoted mother to three children. During this period she took up paper marbling and quickly achieved renown for the dazzling originality of her decorative papers. In her early thirties she suffered the double blow of a breast cancer diagnosis and her husband’s death on active service in World War II. Undaunted, she wrote her autobiography Long Live Great Bardfield and began creating a series of strange, beautiful oil paintings and collaged constructions. In Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious her work is, for the first time, given the public showcase and critical examination it deserves, revealing Garwood’s development of a distinctive ‘sophisticated naive’ approach that subtly transformed innocent subjects to unsettling effect. More than ninety works by Tirzah Garwood – including books, studies and ephemera, almost exclusively from private collections – are accompanied by artworks by Eric Ravilious that set the context in which the artists worked together, exploring the shared interests and techniques of this remarkable creative couple. Published in association with Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Grayson Perry Delusions of Grandeur Grayson Perry

This publication accompanies a major exhibition created and curated by Grayson Perry at the Wallace Collection. The Collection’s famous portrait of Madame de Pompadour (1759) by François Boucher has long fascinated Perry, as have a great many other pieces including its superb group of portrait miniatures and an early eighteenth-century bronze of Mezzetin, soulfully strumming his guitar. Perry has created a fictional persona, Shirley Smith, who believes herself to be the rightful heir to Hertford House’s treasures – and indeed, the entire Wallace Collection. Through this identity, a series of new artworks have been made – inspired and influenced by those in the Collection – intended to decorate an imagined family home, complete with ancestral portraits, Old Masters and priceless antiques. Delusions of Grandeur presents this fantasy world and playfully explores themes including the meaning of home and how it creates a sense of safety, the gendering of decoration, perfection versus authenticity, and the exquisite and pretty versus the brutality and pomp of masculinity. And through the backstory of Shirley Smith, the transformative and healing nature of art is demonstrated. This book presents Perry’s new works in a variety of media: ceramic, sculpture, textile and works on paper, which themselves complement the diversity and range of objects found within the Collection itself. This landmark exhibition marking Perry’s 65th birthday is both a meditation and an introspection and offers an elaborate commentary on the very nature of making and collecting art. Published in association with the Wallace Collection.

Euan Uglow An Arc from the Eye Edited by Fay Blanchard and Anthony Spira

Euan Uglow (1932–2000) was one of Britain’s most significant twentieth-century painters, known for his sustained observation and painstaking technique, often taking months, if not years, to complete a work. Each picture pursues a particular idea, seeking to depict the visual reality of the concept, expressed with radiant colours and light. This book accompanies the first solo exhibition of Uglow’s work in a UK public institution for 20 years and features over 40 of his most ambitious paintings. Uglow often had three or four active ‘set-ups’ in his Battersea studio, using particular rectangular compositions in an attempt ‘to paint a structured painting full of controlled and therefore potent emotion’. Almost mathematical in his methods, Uglow left markings on his canvases that reveal his processes, including how the passage of time affected the depiction of his subjects. Best known for his large-scale nudes, Uglow also made landscapes in the summer light of the Mediterranean and still lifes, taking up the challenge of painting materials such as plastic, as well as organic material in gradual decay, such as fruit. Published in association with MK Gallery.

Winston Churchill The Painter Edited by Lucy Davis

Universally renowned as an inspirational statesman, writer, orator and the man who led Britain to victory in the Second World War, what may be less well known about Winston Churchill (1874–1965), was that he was also an enthusiastic amateur painter. Despite starting late at the age of forty, painting became a passion that would endure for the rest of his life. A careful selection of over fifty paintings from museums, institutions and private collections presents a fascinating backdrop to his times, politics, diplomacy and interests. The book follows a chronological approach and spans Churchill’s activity as an artist from his first attempts during the First World War through to the 1960s, shortly before his death. His own paintings are complemented by a small group of works by his artistic mentors and friends, such as Sir John Lavery (1856–1941) and Sir William Nicholson (1872–1949), which help explore his artistic development. Churchill’s own paintings are ultimately representations of places he loved to visit and depict, but they are just as much autobiographical and provide an insight not often appreciated by the public into his private life. It is an unprecedented opportunity to reconsider Churchill through his paintings. Published in association with the Wallace Collection.

Rise Up Resistance, Revolution, Abolition Edited by Victoria Avery and Wanja Kimani

Drawing on new research, Rise Up and the accompanying exhibition look at the period from 1750 to 1850 when Britain became the world’s first industrialised nation and one of history’s largest empires. At the same time, it played a central role in the Atlantic slave trade, trafficking more captive African people than any other European power. Millions were forcibly abducted and transported to work on British-owned plantations in the Caribbean and the Americas. In Britain, Black and white anti-slavery groups and individuals campaigned for abolition, with Cambridge playing a leading role in the 1780s. Despite opposition, laws were gradually enacted to abolish the slave trade in 1807, and enslavement in 1833. However, other exploitative systems, including apprenticeship and indentured labour, took their place. Financial compensation was awarded to former enslavers, while the formerly enslaved received nothing. This is the multifaceted story of the fight to end Atlantic slavery, of its aftermath and ongoing legacies. It is told through the stories of individuals and communities from across the Caribbean, Europe and the Americas, and through an interrogation of historic objects and artworks, in conversation with works by contemporary artists. Despite the passing of almost two centuries since Britain outlawed slavery, for peoples of the global majority, the struggles for autonomy, equality and social justice continue today. Published in association with the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Black Atlantic Power, People, Resistance Edited by Victoria Avery and Jake Subryan Richards

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2024 BERGER PRIZE Between 1400 and 1900, European powers, not least Britain, colonised the Americas and transported over 12.5 million people from subSaharan Africa as slaves. The contested space, formed by the interactions of multiple people and cultures, both Black and white, we now call the Black Atlantic. Cambridge and Cambridgeshire played a key role in this international narrative – a story of commerce, profit and colonialism, of opinion-forming, and of struggle. Through the lens of historic artworks, artefacts and natural history specimens, this book and the exhibition it accompanied analyse the rise and growth of enslavement, the profits made by Dutch and British traders and plantation-owners, the power of images, the knowledge produced by enslaved people, histories of resistance movements and the consequences of these events today. Works by contemporary makers challenge long-held assumptions, address erasures, and create alternative narratives of repair, freedom and justice. Published in association with the Fitzwilliam Museum.

Fashion City How Jewish Londoners shaped global style Bethan Bide and Lucie Whitmore

While Jewish people have long been associated with making clothes, the full extent of the contributions they made to London’s growing reputation as a global fashion capital and the democratisation of fashion through the development of ready-to-wear clothes in the twentieth century have been widely forgotten. Spanning all sectors of the fashion industry – from homeworking to haute couture – the book draws stories from generations of Jewish Londoners and is richly illustrated with images from across the city and the Museum of London’s collections. Fashion City takes you on a journey across London, from the busy clothing factories of the East End to the swinging boutiques of Carnaby Street and the manicured squares of Mayfair. Along the way it introduces you to the intriguing stories of the key figures behind London fashion, such as Frederick Starke, a boy from the East End whose ability to tell a creative story changed the way the world saw British ready-to-wear fashion; Otto Lucas, a gay Jewish German hat maker who became the most financially successful milliner in the world; Mr Fish, the ruledefying tailor who dressed Mick Jagger and Muhammed Ali; and Netty Spiegel, who escaped the Nazis on the Kindertransport and became a London wedding dress designer of choice under her ‘Neymar’ label. Bringing together a wealth of new research and presenting a novel perspective of London fashion, this book gives a voice to the city’s overlooked and often forgotten Jewish fashion makers.

Borrowed Landscapes

China and Japan in the Historic Houses and Gardens of Britain and Ireland Emile de Bruijn

The art and ornament of China and Japan have had a deep impact in the British Isles. From the seventeenth century onwards, the design and decoration of interiors and gardens in Britain and Ireland was profoundly influenced by the importation of Chinese and Japanese luxury goods, while domestic designers and artisans created their own fanciful interpretations of ‘oriental’ art. Those hybrid styles and tastes have traditionally been known as chinoiserie and japonisme, but they can also be seen as elements of the wider and still very relevant phenomenon of orientalism, or the way the West sees the East. Illustrated with a wealth of new photography and published in association with the National Trust, Borrowed Landscapes is an engaging survey of orientalism in the Trust’s historic houses and gardens across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Drawing on new research, Emile de Bruijn demonstrates how elements of Chinese and Japanese culture were simultaneously desired and misunderstood, dismembered and treasured, idealised and caricatured. Published in association with the National Trust.

William Blake’s Universe Edited by David Bindman and Esther Chadwick

Responding to revolution and war in Europe, enslavement and exploitation in European colonies, and repression and reaction at home in Britain, William Blake (1757–1827) produced an astonishing body of work that combined criticism of the contemporary world with a vision for universal redemption. Blake has always been seen as a distinctly English figure but, in reality, his art at all periods of his career is profoundly involved with Europe, as a source of his images and as a vision of the past, present and future of humanity. This richly illustrated book, published alongside an exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum, explores the vital ingredients of Blake’s work and draws parallels with the ambitions of his artist contemporaries in Europe, most notably the German artist Philipp Otto Runge. In doing so the editors and contributors show that Blake was not alone in looking to art to build the world anew in the face of shattering political crises.

Ranjit Singh Sikh, Warrior, King Davinder Toor

Gifted with an indomitable sense of destiny and backed by the tactical support of a guileful mother-in-law and a holy man with a penchant for warfare, Ranjit Singh would emerge as the region’s undisputed ‘Maharaja’ or Great King at the beginning of the 19th century. His meteoric rise to power ushered in a short-lived but hugely influential Sikh Empire that would inextricably impact on the fortunes of the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent. Through a stunning array of over 100 exquisite photographs of artworks, glittering jewellery and weaponry from the Sikh Empire drawn from major private and public collections including the Wallace Collection, explore how Ranjit Singh brought about a golden age in Punjab where trade boomed, the arts flourished and a formidable army was developed along European lines to keep any British, Afghan, Persian or Russian threat at bay. The book features important historic objects from Ranjit Singh’s court, courtiers and family members, including those personally owned by the maharaja and the most famous of his several dozen ‘official’ wives, Maharani Jind Kaur. Also highlighted are objects intimately connected with their son, Maharaja Duleep Singh – the deposed boy-king turned country squire who was a favourite of Queen Victoria and the father of the prominent suffragette, Princess Sophia Duleep Singh. Perhaps most surprisingly, discover the achievements of Ranjit Singh’s European officials in the fields of Punjab’s military industry, artistic patronage, the shawl trade and diplomatic relations with Europe.
