Living the 100-Year Life

How to build a career that lasts and a life you love

Lynda Gratton

How will you live your 100-year life? Bestselling author Lynda Gratton explores how we can navigate the challenges of a longer life.

How will you live your 100-year life?

In a world of longer lives and constant change, work is no longer a single straight path. It is a fabric we weave – with threads of mastery, friendship, calm, intimacy, adventure, cooperation, knowing, and amplification. How we strengthen and reweave these threads will shape not just our working lives, but our happiness, health, and sense of purpose across a century.

In Living the 100-Year Life, Lynda Gratton – acclaimed co-author of The 100-Year Life – offers a practical and deeply human guide to navigating this new reality. Drawing on global research, expert voices, and the stories of four fictional characters at different life stages, Gratton shows how to:

·Discover what each of the eight threads can make possible for you ·Strengthen the threads through reflection, action, and promises to your future self

·Weave a working life that is resilient, meaningful, and uniquely yours

This is not a book about extending life for its own sake. It is a book about living wisely across time – finding joy in friendships, resilience in calm, creativity in adventure, and purpose in work.

Your 100-year life is still being woven. The threads are in your hands.

Lynda Gratton is a Professor of Management Practice at the London Business School and founder of the advisory practice HSM Advisory. How to Design a Universe

The Science of Real and Virtual Worlds

An exploration of the simulation hypothesis through the lens of modern physics, questioning whether our reality is real or a sophisticated digital illusion.

Could we be living inside a computer simulation?

Sent on a mission by her son to answer this existential question, Catherine Heymans throws all the physics she knows at the question. As the Astronomer Royal for Scotland she is used to creating giant maps of the universe, but what if all the ancient light that she has spent her career collecting is just a series of computer impulses in an elaborate simulation?

Assembling the facts, How to Design a Universe takes us on a journey to understand how one day we might simulate our own lives. Along the way it explores how the fundamentals of light and electricity underpin the world we see, the consequences of quantum theory, and how technological advances mean physicists can already creating their own simulated worlds and AI is a reaching a point where we can’t always tell what is real. Offering an engaging guide to the simulation hypothesis, Heymans shows how modern physics and technology combine to challenge our most basic assumption: that reality is real.

Catherine Heymans is Astronomer Royal for Scotland, the first woman to hold the title, whose research has been featured in the Guardian, Sunday Times, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Washington Post and New Scientist. She is a regular contributor to BBC radio and has made a number of TV appearances.

A World Apart

A spellbinding queer romantasy debut set against the atmospheric backdrop of Victorian London, weaving a tale of forbidden love, magical dimensions and impossible choices.

Star-crossed lovers bound by magic. But will their devotion set them free—or doom them forever?

London, 1886.

All Kit Finchley wants is to master the magic that keeps eluding him – and to live a life not dictated by title or expectation. Duty presses in from every quarter, but the one thing that quickens his pulse is the promise of real power.

When a miscast spell tears open a doorway into the Veil – a liminal realm where Wilfrith and his family have been trapped since a fateful bargain with the Faerie Queen 800 years ago – Kit stumbles into a love he never imagined. Their connection is immediate, impossible, and undeniable. Determined to free Wil, Kit hunts for the spell that could bridge two worlds.

By night, Kit risks everything to reach the boy between worlds, desperate to bind the realms without breaking them. But by day, Kit finds himself intrigued by a young bohemian woman of a very wealthy, aristocratic family. She's unlike any woman he's ever met: rebellious, clever, and best of all, she believes in magic.

Torn between first love, magic and duty, Kit will be forced to make a decision that will change all three of their lives forever.

Falling for the Protagonist

Bex Goos

A high-concept romcom about a woman who falls asleep reading a romance novel, only to wake up inside its fictional world. Perfect for fans of forced proximity and bookish stories.

Their love story is hotter than fiction

When Emmy Miura falls asleep reading a newly purchased romance novel (after her visit to a sex psychic her sister swears by), the last thing she expects is to wake up in the protagonist’s bed the next morning. Emmy doesn’t want to disrupt Will Barrett’s world—even if he is fictional. He is clearly content with his life in idyllic and not-actually-real Cobalt, Massachusetts. He has good friends, steady work as a nurse in the paediatric wing of the local hospital, and an adorable house he inherited from his grandfather. Understandably, he doesn’t take it well when she manages to convince him none of the things he knows and loves are real. While Will is reeling at the implications of Emmy’s revelation, Emmy is frantic to get back to the real world. The problem is that she is, against all her best efforts, falling head over heels in love with Will.

Will has feelings for her, too—much to the chagrin of the woman who was supposed to be his love interest—and he is determined to go with Emmy when she finds a way out of the book. Neither Emmy nor Will know if they can make a real life together that’s based on fiction, but together they are willing to try.

Perfect for fans of: forced proximity, fake dating, book-within-a-book, magical realism, and spice (three peppers)

Rebecca “Bex” Goos has several years of experience ghost-writing and editing romantic short stories and novels. Her short story, “Can’t Wait to Stay,” was included in the romantic compilation Friends to Lovers, Volume 1, released by Violet Gaze Press in 2021. Prior to Covid, she was a high school English and creative writing teacher, and she currently lives in Fargo, North Dakota with her husband and two sons.

Stealing Hitler's Rocket

The Incredible Mission to Smuggle a V-2 Rocket out of Nazi-Occupied Europe to Britain

Guy Walters

The incredible story of how one of Adolf Hitler’s top secret V2 rockets was stolen by the Poles and smuggled to Britain in the most extraordinary operation of the Second World War.

This is the incredible story of how one of Adolf Hitler’s top secret V2 rockets was stolen by the Poles and smuggled to Britain in the most extraordinary operation of the Second World War. More extraordinary still, it is a story that is utterly neglected.

The V2 rocket was part of Adolf Hitler’s plan to break British morale. The world’s first rocket delivered warhead, the VI, had killed thousands of British people before allied forces captured its launch sites and halted the weapon in its tracks. What they weren’t ready for was a new and more terrifying rocket appearing seemingly out of thin air – this one as tall as a four-storey building and using highly advanced technology. Powered by a rocket engine burning a mix of alcohol-water and liquid oxygen, the V2 blasted its way to the edge of space, before falling back to Earth at supersonic speed and killing thirty thousand people. This was the threat of Hitler’s terror made devastatingly real.

But Winston Churchill’s intelligence chiefs had known of the weapon weeks before it first struck the mainland, and British operatives hatched a plan with Polish resistance forces to smuggle one of these rockets out from underneath Hitler’s nose. In Stealing Hitler’s Rocket, Guy Walters reveals the true extent of the secret and life-threatening operation undertaken by the allies and the Polish underground movement that changed the course of history forever.

PRAISE

“Absorbing and thoroughly gripping . . . Walters proves emphatically that the reality of Nazi hunting is far more fascinating than the myth.” —James Holland on Hunting Evil

Guy Walters is a bestselling British author, historian and journalist. He is the author and editor of nine books on the Second World War, including war thrillers, and a historical analysis of the Berlin Olympic Games. He is a regular expert on a range of WWII-era documentaries for the BBC, Sky History, History Hit, and the Yesterday channel. The Stay Behinds

Sweden's Cold War Guardians

Packed with first-hand accounts and previously classified government documents, this book reveals the secrets of Sweden's resistance network, created to deter a potential Soviet occupation.

Following World War II, Sweden faced the looming threat of the Soviet Union and its drive to spread communism. This led to the formation of a resistance movement involving Sweden's intelligence service, the employers' association and the labour movement. The stay-behind network was fully legalised in 1955 and continued its clandestine work until the mid-1990s, with the mission of keeping communism – and the Soviets – out of Sweden.

Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews with key figures, author Johan Wennström peels back the layers of secrecy surrounding the stay-behinds. This book looks at the men who created the network, the work the operatives carried out, the cell-like structure they relied on, and how the US and UK intelligence communities cooperated with the Swedish stay-behinds. This is the first in-depth study of a secret organization that helped shape modern Sweden. It also highlights lessons for today's NATO and makes the case for a defence policy grounded in national interest.

Johan Wennström is a research fellow at the Swedish Defense University. His essays have appeared in, among others, The Spectator and UnHerd. He has been on the trail of Sweden's resistance organization for several years. He has spoken with intelligence officers, government officials, surviving agents and the families of those now deceased, and read previously unknown or classified documents. The result is this landmark study on Sweden's resistance movement. He lives in Sweden with his family.

Flak-Artillerie

Thomas Anderson

A highly illustrated history of the Flakpanzer, based on first-hand accounts, original documentation and previously unpublished images.

As the war progressed, Allied and Soviet forces began to deploy ground-attack aircraft armed with cannons, bombs or rockets to halt German armoured columns. Consequently, field commanders began to demand for their units to be issued with effective armoured anti-aircraft weapons.

At first, weapons were mounted on light trucks and then, more effectively, on the chassis of light, medium or heavy half-tracks. German military planners then issued orders for a dedicated armoured Flakpanzer to be produced—the 2cm Flakpanzer 38(t) which utilized the chassis of a Czech-built PzKpfw 38(t). The effectiveness of this type saw the development of four further vehicles on the PzKpfw IV chassis: FlakPz IV Wirbelwind (whirlwind), 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/50 Ostwind (east wind): 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/60 Möbelwagen (furniture van) and the 2cm Vierlingsflak 38 L/55. The final stages of the war also German field engineers mounting Flak weapons on all types of heavy truck or half-track chassis available.

Renowned armour expert Thomas Anderson draws on first-hand accounts and rare and previously unseen photographs in this comprehensive and fully illustrated study of the German development of Flakpanzers throughout World War II.

Thomas Anderson is a specialist on German armoured fighting vehicles of World War II. He regularly contributes to popular modelling and historical magazines, including Military Modelcraft International (UK), Steel Art (Italy), Historia Militar (Spain) and Batailles & Blindes (France). He lives in Germany.

Case Green

The Birth of the Wehrmacht

Robert Forczyk

This fascinating new study from renowned historian Robert Forczyk tells the story of the Wehrmacht from its birth in 1935 through to the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938.

Adolf Hitler rose to power in 1933 on the back of a populist agenda, and a promise to lead the nation back to unity, stability and prosperity. A key part of that was his promise to restore Germany’s military which had been reduced to little more than a well-armed police force by the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. Key to this was the formal establishment of the Wehrmacht, the newly renamed German Army in 1935.

In this new military-focused study, renowned World War II historian Robert Forczyk traces the development and operations of the Wehrmacht from the announcement of rearmament in 1935 to the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938. He examines the critical trends and events in this period, including the growth of the new Panzer arm, as well as competing priorities with the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. He looks at how Hitler ignored or trampled existing diplomatic agreements while directing a rapid and massive re-armament program in Germany, re-occupying the Rhineland in 1936, incorporating first Austria then the Sudetenland into the Reich by force in 1938, and finally seizing the remainder of Czechoslovakia, Memel from Lithuania and demanding the return of Danzig from Poland, leaving Europe on the cusp of World War II.

Robert Forczyk has a PhD in International Relations and National Security from the University of Maryland and a strong background in European and Asian military history. He retired as a lieutenant colonel from the US Army Reserves having served eighteen years as an armour officer in the US 2nd and 4th infantry divisions and as an intelligence officer in the 29th Infantry Division (Light). Dr Forczyk is currently a consultant in the Washington, D.C area.

Javelins in the Half-Light

The Schnee Eifel Battles, 1944-45

Craig S. Chapman

Javelins in the Half-Light relates the savage combat turned a single forested ridge into the scene of a disappointing attack, a humiliating surrender, and a final grinding victory.

In the bitterly cold forests along Germany’s western frontier, the 8-mile ridge of the Schnee Eifel became the unlikely site of three brutal battles during World War II. A harsh and unforgiving landscape, it offered little strategic advantage yet became the focal point of a desperate struggle between US and German forces. Historian Craig S. Chapman chronicles the pivotal, often overlooked battles that raged across this desolate terrain.

This is a gripping account of the US 4th Infantry Division’s ill-fated assault in September 1944, their months-long stalemate with German forces, and the catastrophic consequences of tactical misjudgments that led to one of the largest American surrenders of the war. The narrative shifts to the winter of 1944–45, as the Germans launch a massive counteroffensive in the Battle of the Bulge, only for the Americans to return in February 1945, determined to retake the Schnee Eifel. Extensive archival research and personal testimonies create a blow-by-blow description of combat teams penetrating defensive lines, destroying pillboxes, and diving for cover as shrapnel rained down.

This compelling history explores the gritty realities of combat and the leadership decisions that shaped these battles. A story of endurance, flawed strategy, and unyielding courage, this book offers a window into the cost of war.

Craig Chapman, an avid researcher and award-winning author, has published three military histories, one of them directly tied to this subject. His style of engaging scholarship is ideally suited to bring an authoritative yet gripping story to readers and keep them turning the pages. Prior to becoming a full-time writer, he completed dual careers in information technology and the US Army/National Guard.

Jagdverband 44

The Luftwaffe’s Mavericks

Robert Forsyth

The dramatic story of Jagdverband 44, established by leading Luftwaffe ace Adolf Galland with the aim of proving that the Messerschnmitt Me 262 was the superior jet fighter he championed.

Jagdverband (JV) 44 was formed as a result of conflict and dissent within the Luftwaffe’s high command. Following disagreement with Reichsmarschall Herman Göring, the commander of the fighter arm, Adolf Galland, was dismissed from his post and exiled. He was given permission to set up a small fighter unit with which to prove that the revolutionary Me 262 was the war-winning jet fighter he believed it to be.

Assembling a small group of disillusioned and weary Luftwaffe fighter aces and flying instructors, Galland—arguably the most famous German fighter ace of World War II—moved his unit, JV 44, to Munich, from where it operated the Me 262 against USAAF aircraft bombing targets in Austria and southern Germany.

In this reappraisal of JV 44, published thirty years after his acclaimed and bestselling first study of the unit, leading Luftwaffe historian Robert Forsyth assesses Galland’s motives for forming the unit and whether it can be regarded more accurately as a ‘Squadron of Aces’ or a ‘Squadron of Outcasts and Exiles’. The book will also contain numerous first-hand accounts sourced by the the author during his research in the 1990s when he met with several former pilots from JV 44.

Robert Forsyth is an author, editor and publisher, specializing in military aviation and military history. He is the author of over 25 titles for Osprey Publishing, on the aircraft, units and operations of the Luftwaffe, an interest he has held since boyhood. He has written articles for The Aviation Historian, Aerojournal, Aeroplane Monthly, Aviation News, Combat Aircraft, and FlyPast and he is a member of the Editorial Board of The Aviation Historian.

Future Build

How Construction Can Heal Our Planet

Will Arnold

Future Build exposes the devastating environmental impact of modern construction while offering a bold vision for change.

Construction shapes the world we live in, but also leaves one of the heaviest footprints on our planet. From the relentless heat of cement kilns to the towering steel and concrete skeletons of our cities, Future Build reveals how our dependence on five key materials has led to soaring carbon emissions, waste and ecological destruction.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Structural engineer Will Arnold offers a bold vision for change, revealing how every stage of construction—from design to demolition—can be transformed for the better. Through a global journey of pioneering projects and groundbreaking innovations, he showcases buildings that do more than just minimize harm: they actively heal the planet. From schools built of bamboo, to concrete floors designed with plant-like efficiency and houses made from waste, a better future is not only possible, it is already being built.

Will Arnold is a multiple award-winning environmentalist and structural engineer, and a visiting professor at the University of Bath. He is best known for his work around policy, standards and guidance related to the sustainable use of construction materials.

Have you ever questioned your sanity after looking at all those unnecessary things you bought after a late night online shopping spree? Or worse still, have no recollection of buying them at all?

From the supermarket shelf to online checkout, every purchase we make is influenced by hidden forces. From what you’re wearing right now to what you’ll eat for lunch, or what you’re going to watch on television tonight, the choices you make are designed by marketers who know which parts of the psyche to prod, poke and influence to get the customer to feel, think, believe and behave exactly the way they want them to.

Influenced uncovers the science behind our buying decisions, revealing the psychology of decision-making, the emotional triggers you don’t notice, the quirks of personality that shape your spending and the surprising influence of other people, from friends and family to social media personalities. Drawing on cutting-edge research and real-world examples, Aarron Atkinson-Toal offers a fascinating look at the inner workings of the consumer mind – and how understanding it can change the way you shop.

Dr Aarron Atkinson-Toal is Assistant Professor of Marketing at Durham University. His experience spans a broad range of marketing, business and psychology.

The Cycling Addiction

Suffering, Speed and the Search for Meaning on Two Wheels

The author of the critically acclaimed The Midlife Cyclist explores the mental makeup of elite cyclists to make sense of mentally complex and brutal sport.

“Make pain your friend” is a mantra cyclists at every level take to heart. Go faster, harder and keep going. You become immersed, single-minded, even obsessed with your training and racing. However, when no other sport requires such a physical and emotional investment, Phil stops to ask: where’s your head at? He considers how our thinking relates to training and racing, and shows how even our cycling addiction can be controlled and utilised to be stronger and faster.

The Cycling Addiction helps riders to understand and improve their most effective cycling muscle: the human brain. Combining practical advice with contributions from psychiatrists, team physicians, as well as Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Olympic champions, including Chris Boardman, Greg LeMond and Tao Geoghegan Hart, the book introduces ground-breaking concepts that will enable cyclists to reboot their mindsets and revolutionise their riding.

In the first book to forensically interrogate mental wellbeing and attitudes in cycling, Phil Cavell blends smart science and a profound understanding of the tribe to explore the dangers riders can expose themselves to at the highest level.

Phil Cavell is joint founder of the pioneering Cyclefit organisation – the first company in Europe dedicated to cycling analysis and biomechanics. Cyclefit has run worldwide education programmes as well as providing bike-fitting services to professional cycling teams and athletes. Phil writes a monthly column in Cyclist Magazine

Gilded Rage

Elon Musk and the Radicalization of Silicon Valley

Jacob Silverman

A searing insight into the radicalization of Silicon Valley, from Elon Musk to Peter Thiel, David Sacks and Donald Trump, and how it will affect our lives.

A PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BEST BOOK OF 2025 * A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF 2025

What happens if the world’s richest and most powerful men decide to dismantle democracy?

In Gilded Rage, New York Times bestselling author Jacob Silverman takes us inside the surreal, high-stakes world of Silicon Valley. This is the story of the political awakening and radicalization of a cabal of tech billionaires and their descent into ideological extremism. Flush with cash from the zero-interest era, addicted to their own mythology, these men have began reshaping the world in their image -- and it should terrify us all.

At the center is Elon Musk, the mogul whose obsession with the “woke mind virus” has turned him from a tech innovator to an ideological crusader. But Musk is just the beginning. Silverman maps a sprawling network of radicalized elitesfrom Peter Thiel and JD Vance to the financiers bankrolling Donald Trump’s return - who are using their platforms and their money to ensure a political revolution that’s already underway.

Silverman travels from San Francisco to Miami, New York to DC, following a movement that’s rewriting the rules and oftentimes fighting a war against reality itself. With sharp reporting and a cast of extraordinary characters, Gilded Rage is a gripping, essential dispatch from the front lines of the billionaire revolution.
