Original translation by James Strachey Revised, supplemented and edited by Mark Solms
Co-published with the Institute of Psychoanalysis, this Revised Standard Edition of The Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud offers a once-in-a-generation update and reframing of Freud, bringing together decades of scholarly deliberation concerning the translation of Freudian technical terms while retaining the best of Strachey’s original English translation.
These newly clarified translations reshape long held assumptions about Freud’s concepts, clinical sensibilities, and intellectual legacy, and set the new academic and professional standard for teaching, learning, research and professional practice.

Why do we sleep and dream? What happens during sleep? And how have attitudes to sleep and dreaming changed over time and across the continents? In a work that spans almost 3,000 years, these ambitious questions are addressed by 56 experts, each contributing their overview of a theme applied to a period in history.
This six-volume set treats sleep and dreaming as forces that actively shaped history, governance, medicine, religion, and everyday life, not just as biological functions. Rather than asking how people slept, A Cultural History of Sleep and Dreaming shows how the unavoidable need for sleep quietly structured societies, from household routines to systems of power, and how dreams were interpreted as medical symptoms, divine messages, or tools for decision-making across time and cultures. Themes (and chapter titles) are: sleep patterns and regulations; sleeping arrangements; health and the body; insomnia; dream theories, their meaning and interpretation; verbal representations; visual representations; and the impact of sleep and dreams.

Edited by Marius Turda, Oxford Brookes University, UK
“In a contemporary moment afflicted by concocted culture wars that are also proxy race wars, this important collection of essays does what is urgently needed - by explicating the concept of race in a historical frame. Between them, these volumes show how concepts of ‘race’ and ‘an impressive racial edifice’ emerged in the West over several centuries, and became such a powerful political, scientific and cultural force. An important contribution to the historical literacy that is needed if we are to challenge race and racism effectively.”
Priyamvada Gopal, Professor of Postcolonial Studies, University of Cambridge, UK
How have definitions of race varied and changed over time? What impact have religion, science and politics had on race throughout history?
These ambitious questions are answered in this work by over 60 experts who deepen our understanding of how race has developed conceptually and in reality.
Themes (and chapter titles) are: definitions of race; race, environment and culture; race and religion; race and science; race and politics; race and ethnicity; race and gender; race and body; and anti-race.

Volumes 1-6
Edited by Alexander Rehding, Harvard University, USA &, David Irving, Milà i Fontanals Institution for Research in the Humanities, Spain
“These impressive six volumes bring brilliantly into focus the preferred perspectives of the early twentyfirst century as applied to the cultural history of music – perspectives alert to racism, gender, colonial guilt, slavery, the marginalization of certain types and ‘classes’ of music, unconscious hierarchies and biases, and cross-cultural exchanges and appropriations … This is a history for a generation that has finally emerged from under the long shadow of Romanticism, that is not afraid to interrogate in depth the West’s self-serving grand narratives of its own past, and one that lives in a world where the ocean of knowledge is no longer construed as a fixed.” Music and Letters
Music has been significant in social, religious, and political ritual, and in education, art, and entertainment in all human cultures from antiquity to today.
A Cultural History of Western Music presents the first study of music in all its forms – ritual, classical, popular and commercial.
Themes (and chapter titles) are: identity, communities and society; changing philosophies and ideas about music; politics and power; musical exchange and knowledge transfer between the West and the non-West; musical education; popular culture and musical entertainment; the places, practices, and experiences of performance; and the development of music technologies and media.

1770 to the Present Day
Edited by Carolina Armenteros, University of Cambridge, UK, Matthijs Lok, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands & Iason Zarikos, EKKE Centre for Social Research, Greece
This two volume study sees contributors from the UK, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Singapore and ten countries from across mainland Europe analyse how monarchy has been theorized and implemented in the Atlantic world from the birth of conservatism during the French Revolution to the present day.
Using monarchy as a lens, it also provides an original exploration of how conservatism, often branded as reactive, can be viewed as a continual response to, and reinterpretation of, pivotal social and political events over the longue durée. 33 chapters are included covering over 20 nations across the Atlantic world as well as parts of Asia.

Few other topics elicit such strong opinions and sensationalist headlines as international migration.
The entries in this volume provide a foundation to understand why that is so. Migration scholars examine the fundamental causes of modern migration, incorporating ideas and terms that help the reader understand types of migration that occur both within and between countries. It incorporates discussions of how these terms are reflected in different contexts throughout the world and help flesh out ideas that influence the decision, or necessity, to migrate.

The Bible and Western Christian Literature
Books and the Book
Edited by Stephen Prickett†, University of Kent at Canterbury, UK & Elisabeth Jay, Oxford Brookes University, UK
"Western literature in all periods has been influenced by the bible, yet the bible is a closed book to many readers today. They fail to pick up allusions obvious to earlier generations. This series, the brainchild of the late Stephen Prickett and inspired by his distinctive approach, shows how deep biblical influence on literature runs. It affects not only words and phrases, but the deep structures of stories and poems. This is an authoritative and massive resource for all students of Western literature, and a reliable guide to the history of the bible's reception in the West." John Barton, University of Oxford, UK
The Bible and Western Christian Literature is an authoritative 1.5 million word reference, resource covering the impact and influence of the bible upon the development of literature and bible’s role ‘as’ literature from the classical period to the modern day.

Who were the first giants of American rock and roll?
Which songs and labels and performers drove rock's emergence and explosive growth in the mid-20th century? In what ways did the rhythm and blues sound created by African-American composers, singers, and musicians between the world wars become the foundations of early rock and roll? How did radio and television boost the popularity of early rock and roll pioneers like Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Wanda Jackson?
This wide-ranging encyclopedia answers these questions and many more, employing an informative blend of biographical profiles, overviews of noteworthy recordings and performances, and entries devoted to important record labels, concert venues, and milestones in related musical genres, including blues, folk, gospel, and Western swing.

Jon Inge Faldalen, University of Oslo, Norway
This two-volume work explores a static long take, termed a still Einstellung, as well as coexistent still and moving imagery by Lumière, Welles and the MPEG compression codec, to contemplate the kind of image it generates.
The author embraces neologisms to capture specific aesthetic-technical phenomena more accurately than has hitherto been possible. Stillmoving I is a theoretical exploration of Einstellung where the author asks whether this image is a still image, or a moving image, or both, or neither, or, finally, what Faldalen terms stillmoving. Stillmoving II explores Einstellung through a small set of specific case studies.

The growing Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeare's Language series (available in print and now on Drama Online) brings scholarship on Shakespeare's language fully into the 21st century. Comprising five volumes, it offers the first comprehensive account of Shakespeare’s language to use computational methods derived from corpus linguistics. The series affords fresh insights into Shakespeare’s use of language at multiple levels - words, phrases, semantic themes, character profiles, and more. In particular, it reveals what Shakespeare’s language meant to the Elizabethans through the analysis of millions of words written by his contemporaries.

The third volume in The Arden Encyclopedia of Shakespeare’s Language focuses on keywords in Shakespeare's plays. Play keywords are derived by conducting a statistical comparison between the words in one play with those in all the others. For characters, the comparison is made between the vocabulary of one character and that of all the others in the same play. These keywords are used to create 'linguistic profiles' of each play and main character, which show how patterns of words contribute to themes and the characterization of protagonists.
