Welcome to Hopewell Welcome to Hopewell

In 2024, the City of Bloomington will be adding a new park in the heart of the new Hopewell neighborhood as part of the Hopewell Phase I East construction project. The project encompasses the four-block area between Rogers Street and Morton and 1st Street and Second Street.

Hopewell Commons will be a 1-acre urban park that will extend east-west along the newly constructed University Street, west of the Seminary Square Kroger. The park will have many urban features, including trees, a small lawn, seating, wifi, greenspace, a covered pavilion, public art, and a play structure. The park will also be built with sustainable features like permeable pavers, soil cells for street trees, and a stormwater cistern for irrigation.

At the east end, new crossings will be constructed across Morton Street to connect to the B-Line Trail. This park will serve as a center of activity and greenspace for the new neighborhood as it develops. The opening date will be announced as the Hopewell project progresses.

HOPEWELL COMMONS

Coming in 2024!

Serving as part of Bloomington’s hospital for nearly six decades, Hopewell House was the community's first hospital, razed in the summer of 1963. The beautiful legacy of Hopewell House – residents taking action to care for each other – continues to inspire the many individuals working to ensure that this new neighborhood in the heart of Bloomington remains a place of compassion, good health, and perpetual optimism. More information about the history of the former hospital site, now known as Hopewell, can be found at https://bton.in/advRF.

The City contracted with Borshoff, an Indianapolis-based advertising and public relations firm, to assist with naming and branding the former hospital site. In the process of selecting the Hopewell name, representatives of the City and Borshoff conducted one-on-one interviews and small group engagement sessions with a variety of stakeholders. These contributors shared a broad variety of perspectives representing their diverse interests and expertise, including business, arts, environment and sustainability, healthcare and human services, development, education, community history, neighborhoods, and government.

For more information about the design and development of Hopewell Commons, visit bloomington.in.gov/hopewell.

Welcome to City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation!

We equitably enrich community well-being by providing quality parks, trails, facilities, programs and services, and through the stewardship of natural spaces.

Leave the Leaves (and Do Less Yard Work!)

Did you know you can support native pollinator communities and give your body a rest just by leaving the leaves in your yard? Pollinators and other invertebrates require fallen leaves to provide shelter over winter. Since we depend on native pollinators for food, healthy ecosystems, and so much more, it’s important we help strengthen their populations by doing less maintenance! In this workshop, we’ll learn ways to provide pollinator habitat in our yards and discuss the benefits of leaving the leaves!

Griffy Lake Accessible Fishing Pier and Loop Trail

The Griffy Loop Trail and Accessible Fishing Pier project is being completed to provide greater safety, accessibility, and connectivity at the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. While an improved trail and causeway has been in the Griffy Lake Master Plan for decades, this project is being completed now with funding largely from a 2018 Bicentennial Bond. The project is being completed in three phases.

Phase One –

Causeway and Accessible Fishing

Pier

This phase, completed in July 2022, constructed the retaining wall and .25-mile multi-use path along Headley Rd, connecting the northern and southern trails around Griffy Lake.

Phase Two – Griffy Dam Trail Crossing

Phase Two of the project will create an official trail across the top of the Griffy Lake dam as well as a new set of stairs to create an improved access point from the dam parking lot. Phase Two began in June 2023 and will be completed in Fall 2023.

Phase Three – Griffy South Shore Trail Improvements

Phase Three of the project involves constructing a new four mile hiking trail along the south shore of Griffy Lake, connecting the south end of the dam to the new .5-mile trail constructed as part of Phase One. The existing trail on the south shore is heavily eroded, difficult to follow, and does not follow current environmental best practices for trails. The trail project will eliminate social and informal trails and create a better, easier to follow trail for users.
